Kicasso Sneaker Art Bar co-owners Kadeana and Nicole described how their business idea was the right fit. “We’re cousins. We were talking with a family member after we had done the paint and sit-down experience and had researched the industry, also adding a twist to the concept: how cool it would be to do it on a shoe. We basically bought a shoe and started testing it by Kicasso Sneaker Art painting it ourselves. Our shoes came out awesome and we thought we might be onto 6416 Ferguson Street [D4 on map] something,” Kadeana explained. She is an kicassoindy.com alumna of Broad Ripple High School. Nicole said, “We have classes for all. You don’t have to be an artist to create at Kicasso.” Guests can register for our classes at www.kicassoindy.com. Nicole said, “We paint shoes of any size. We have some WBA players with different shoe sizes. We’ve been asked to paint baby shoes for the month they are born. In our inventory, we stock children’s, women’s and men’s sizes. We typically have people register for our classes at (https://www.kicassoindy.com/ contact), so we can have certain sizes available for the class. For the most part, when they register on-line, if we do not have a shoe size in our inventory for them, we order it to make it available for the class. In June, the Indiana Fever

women’s basketball team was here for a team-building session.” She is an alumna of Ritter High School. The Broad Ripple location proved to be a step in the right direction for them. “Our aunt, Brenda Petty, is a long-time hairdresser who is well-known in the city and is also an educator. She is the owner of Changes Salon (https://www. facebook.com/pages/Changes-Total-Salon/408445725931302) that has been here (at 6416 Ferguson Street) for 20 years. The timing worked out when we came up with the concept of Kicasso Sneaker Art Bar, she was starting to scale down her salon. She still operates in the building. Broad Ripple was the ideal location due to the art culture, social outings and experiences that this community is known for. With her shop location, it was like a win-win for us,” Nicole emphasized. Changes Salon’s number is (317) 251-7070. Visit www.kicassoindy.com for more info on Kicasso Sneaker Art Bar. If you have questions for private bookings, open to the public events, corporate parties, team building events or classes for kids, you can call (317) 500-7332 or e-mail: info@kicassoindy.com. Kicasso opened its doors in June. “Our maximum class size is 40 guests. Our classes are self-guided, making each a shoe a one of one. The painting process can be very therapeutic. People break into their creativity when they are designing a pair. I think the most rewarding thing is seeing the people who come in and say, ‘I can’t draw’ or photo by Mario Morone ‘I’m not artistically talented, leave A sample of artistic sneakers at Kicasso. here very proud and loving the artwork they’ve created on their shoes,” Kadeana said. Nicole mentioned, “We’ve got a lot of great feedback from customers who bring back their families. They are amazed at what they have created. We have a special class for kids called Kidcasso, where they can paint. Each class is two and half hours long from beginning to end.” She described the origin of their name: “We used the K from the word “kicks” and replaced the P from “Picasso” making Kicasso their shoes. We have a few customers that changed into the shoes they created after class.” As a family business, Kicasso Sneaker Art Bar have gotten off on the right foot at their location in Broad Ripple.

July Land Use meeting only had two petitions By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com There were two items on the agenda (in bold below) for the July public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee. There was no June meeting. A. 7002 Westfield Boulevard, Michael Rabinowitch with Wooden McLaughlin regarding the rezoning and variances of the property for additional apartment buildings next to the existing Shore Acres. Property actually in the Nora district and the BRVA has previously shown interest. This is the second appearance before the board for this property, but the first for this petitioner. The proposal is for Shore Acres, the apartment complex at 70th and Westfield Boulevard, to expand onto the two-acre property to the south that had been a private home. The expansion will be a single three-story building with 48 units. The Westfield Boulevard curb cut for the driveway of the existing house will be removed, restricting access to the main Shore Acres entrance. The new construction will include one and two bedroom units and will have sufficient parking. The committee generally was in favor of the project, but does not cover areas outside of the BRVA official region. This project is in the area covered by the Nora Community Council (NCC). It was brought before the BRVA committee because of the project’s proximity to Broad Ripple, being on the south end of the Nora region. The BRVA committee agreed to send a letter of support downtown if NCC decides to support the petition. B. 6416 Ferguson Street, Kadeana Daniels owner of Kicasso Sneaker Art Bar regarding applying for an alcoholic beverage permit, beer and wine only for the adult painting classes on canvas sneakers. This request is for a two-way liquor license (beer and wine) for a paint-your-own sneaker store at 6416 Ferguson Street. Kicasso (see front page story) wishes to offer beer and wine at sneaker painting events. The committee agreed to support this petition before the Alcoholic Beverage Commission hearing. The next public meeting of the Land Use and Development committee is planned for Tuesday, August 28, at Northminster Presbyterian Church starting at 6 pm.

Coming to New Creation at First Congregational UCC –

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…. So begins the Star Wars saga – a phrase instantly recognized by millions since 1977. As one of the film series’ many fans, theologian John McDowell has written a book, The Gospel According to Star Wars: Faith, Hope, and the Force, that examines the relationship between the Star Wars story arc and Christian teachings and principles. During August this book and the Star Wars story will be the focus of New Creation worship. From McDowell’s perspective, the overarching theme of the series – specifically the first six episodes – is the redemptive power of love, so that will be our worship theme as well. In reading the book it soon became apparent to the New Creation Team that viewing the films in conjunction with the book study was a must-do. So in that spirit we will offer opportunities for all to enjoy some of the movies (again or for the first time) on Sunday evenings at 6:45 PM following New Creation worship at 5:30 PM. Our “film festival” schedule will be: August 5 – Revenge of the Sith (Episode III), August 12 – The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V), August 19 – Return of the Jedi (Episode VI). Each film viewing will be in preparation for the following week’s worship service. Please join us for this unique opportunity to revisit this classic tale and to explore a new perspective on it. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Indiana State Fair August 3-19 Indiana State Fairgrounds 1202 E. 38th Street all-ages, $12 at gate (check website for deals), gates open 8 am - 9 pm (9:30 Friday and Saturday)

When I dropped off my Open Show entries to the Indiana State Fairgrounds last weekend I realized that I had the cheesiest grin on my face the whole time. I took the opportunity to drive around the grounds and it was great to see the vintage tractors start to arrive, the Big Top tent is up and the Red Barn Elephant Ear stands were in place. Did you know that the Indiana State Fair has an app? You can create your own schedule, scope out food stands, check out the Pioneer Village music stage, see what animals are where, and find restrooms and such. I’m suddenly feeling a little obsolete.... I’m going to try to keep my notmissing-a-day of the Fair streak alive, but it’s going to be touchy a few of the days - believe it or not I still have to work while the Fair is in session. Here’s a little rundown on the things I’m looking forward to. Pioneer Village: The village is stuffed with old farm equipment, demonstrations of homestead handiwork and farm work, and wonderful folks showing how it all works. Be sure and say hello to Dick Reel and check out the bench he’s making. The vintage farm machinery in action chugs off each day at 10 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm. Indiana Arts Building: Formerly known as the Home and Family Arts Building and the Women’s Building before that. This is where you’ll find the Open Show exhibits - photography, baking, handicrafts, antiques, ugly lamps, fine arts, and the Wall of Queens.

Please tell our advertisers that you saw them in

The Gazette

It is because of them that this paper exists. -Alan 4-H Exhibit Halls: Please take time to check out the hard work of 4-H’rs from around the State. The projects take over two buildings on the north-west corner of the Grounds. Small engines, cakes, sewing, woodworking, robots, food preservation, and photography. The Tractor Tram: This is my version of a midway ride, for one thin buck you can hitch a ride around the Fairgrounds pulled by a bio-fuel powered John Deere. I’ve not too proud to admit to eating on the tram. Grab an ear of sweet corn and take a spin. State Fair Parade: The parade kicks off every day at 6:30 (no parade on Tuesdays and Saturdays) and is a delightful lineup of vintage tractors, State Fair Queens, and more tractors. It’s my goal every year to hitch a ride in the parade - I couldn’t make it happen last year, maybe I’ll get lucky this year. I’ll totally admit to being a little disappointed when I heard the theme of this year’s fair, “Step Right Up,” but I’ve come to embrace it. I’m looking forward to visiting the Indiana’s Circus Heritage Exhibit. It is based on the Children’s Museum circus exhibit. There will be three shows a day under the Big Top Circus on the north side of the Fairgrounds. The tent is impressive - I can’t wait to get a peek of what’s under it.

Peter asked about the long-damaged bike rack at the corner of Broad Ripple Avenue and Winthrop. The BRVA says the rack is the responsibility of the BRVA, not the City of Indianapolis, and that repairs are planned. Since the rack is an art piece, the repairs will take longer. Just before press time, the heavily damaged portion of the rack was removed from the sidewalk.

On July 17th a tour group, from Knox Indiana, converged on Broad Ripple Village. They were looking for “basketball Country”. The tour host and guide, Charlie Adams, host of the morning show on WKVI radio K99.3 FM and Kountry KVI 1520 AM who sponsored this outing, took them to Plump’s Last Shot. There they met and talked to Indiana basketball legend Bobby Plump. The tour group was thrilled and I am sure they have plenty of pictures and stories for the folks back home. Rally To Keep The Broad Ripple Outdoor Pool Open On August 4th At 1 p.m.

R HE IP

Please show your support for preserving the Broad Ripple Park Outdoor Pool by showing up for our rally and media event on Saturday August 4 at the Pool at 1 p.m at the front of the pool. Everyone is welcome to come show support for keeping the outdoor pool open. This is the day before the pool closes for the season -- if not forever. [Editor: The statement from IndyParks in our previous issue says there is no plan to change the BR Pool schedule next year.] As you may have heard, on July 24, the IndyParks Board ok’d the new Broad Ripple Park Master Plan which does not include a replacement for the outdoor pool. We need to let the Mayor and others know that the idea that a splash park or un-funded indoor pool dream is a non-starter. The outdoor pool is not “too old”. No one ever learned to swim at a splash park or “lazy river”. Broad Ripple needs amenities for children to learn to swim. There is no funding for an indoor pool. [Editor: The master plan is only a plan document. As stated in the public meetings, there is no funding for any part of the plan’s projected 20-year buildout.] Send your concerns to our CityCounty Councilor, Colleen Fanning (fanningindy@gmail.com) and the Mayor’s Neighborhood Advocate Joel Smith (joel.smith@gmail.com). Sign up on our Facebook site, Friends of Broad Ripple Pool. Also, sign David Dearing’s petition to the Mayor. photo by Bill Malcolm Tell the Friends of Broad Ripple Park and the Broad Ripple Village Association they need to re-think their view on this matter. Some friend! Finally, attend the Metropolitan Development Commission meetings on August 1 and August 15 to oppose IndyPark’s plan to close the outdoor pool.

Indyparks Statement On Pool Not Included In Master Plan

Alexis Weaver, Marketing Coordinator, for IndyParks responded to my query as follows: “Although an outdoor pool is not featured in the master plan, you will find several aquatic amenities such as an indoor pool and outdoor water options. ….We are still in the review/approval process for the master plan…which involves presentations ….the Metropolitan Development Commission (August 1 and 15).

Readers Want The Outdoor Pool To Remain Open

My last column provoked a lot of emails including From Dave Dearing, the un-named petition gatherer in my last column: “…As I told you previously, someone from the consulting firm told me that Indy Parks directed them NOT to consider a traditional outdoor pool. Therefore, Indy Parks stacked the deck on that issue. The process was neither thorough nor inclusive. …Why didn’t you press John (of Friends of Broad Ripple Park) to back up his statement about the pool being obsolete? What specifically is wrong with it? Neither he nor Indy Parks has ever said.” From Julie Huffaker: “…The setting is so beautiful and so relaxing and for me it would be devastating for it to close. … We need to keep this pool to keep this area vibrant and viable, there’s really nothing like it around. It always hurts me to hear of people that never learned to swim, it’s a really important skill to have and I really enjoy seeing all the kids having so much fun like I did when I was growing up. ..” From Pam Warren: “This pool has a character unlike any other in our city pool system. It is not too old – the Y and Riviera Club are older, not being abandoned and neither should this one. This pool should be saved and should be valued.”

Curb Recycling Fees to Double

Reader Norma Wallman reports curb recycling fees are doubling (from $49 to $99 per year). When I called Republic, the firm that handles the recycling, they were unable to answer my question since I am not a customer (and they said they don’t have a media relations department). A Google search reveals that indeed the fees are doubling. Apparently China is no longer accepting our recycling materials, making it difficult for handlers to deal with the materials. This is a nationwide recycling problem, not just Indianapolis. However, in case you wondered, you are not living in Portland or Seattle where recycling is mandatory and part of the normal garbage pick up process and where you are not charged a fee. Indeed, Seattle now requires recycling of even food waste. For those not wanting to pay extra for curbside recycling or who live in apartments, there are still drop off sites (including by the tennis courts at Broad Ripple Park) to drop off your recyclables for free. Bill Malcolm is on the Board of the Indiana Passenger Rail Alliance. Bill welcomes reader feedback and story ideas. Send to bill@broadripplegazette.com

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the right section of the bottom row that contains 1-2-4-6. The 5 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 1. The 5 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 4. The only place left is between the 2-6. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Many friends and neighbors have been spending days and weeks this summer vacationing in Michigan. It only takes a few hours to find a beach, as Michigan borders four of the Great Lakes, which have more of an ocean-like feel. That sandy soil creates unique places to grow fruit trees and wine grapes. Michigan has over 100 wineries that use that estate-grown fruit to perfection. I’m judging the Michigan Wine competition this year which showcases the diversity of the wine being produced with categories for still, fruit, sparkling and ice wines. More Michigan wines are hitting the Indiana market including those of the Moersch Hospitality Group which produces the Round Barn brand. I met Rick Moersch many years ago when I was producing my PBS TV show, The Good Life. He had moved a round barn from Fulton County, Indiana to Baroda, Michigan where he turned it into a winery, tasting room and later added a distillery. His kids grew up and added a craft brewery and expanded the portfolio. Look for Round Barn Winery’s Farm Market Series of fruit wines, the Weekend Series of easy going blends, and the Tabor Hill Classic which includes sparkling wines, on local store shelves soon. The wines are tasty fresh ways to enjoy a day at the beach year round.

Vol. 15 No. 16

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter A Tamable Herb If you want a wonderfully easy-to-grow herb for your garden, albeit one that comes with a challenge, try Mint. Let me explain. I happen to enjoy all I can do with mint, spearmint, and peppermint, but invasiveness can make these the bad boy herbs. Considering all the benefits, taming is worth the effort. Mint is one of the oldest recorded plants in history with references found in Greek, Roman, and Biblical literature. Its name comes from Latin menthe or Greek minthe. In Greek mythology, Minthe, a river nymph, was the love desire of Hades, god of the underworld. However, Persephone (a statue in Holcomb Gardens at our neighboring Butler University), Hades’ wife, discovered his desires and jealously turned Minthe into a plant so everyone would trample and walk on her. Hades was unable to undo the spell his wife had cast so he bestowed the plant with an appealing aroma to smell beneath his feet. Throughout history, mint has been used to treat many ills including indigestion and heartburn, as well as to inhibit the growth of various bacteria and fungi, ease breathing, relieve symptoms of colds and flu, relieve congestion, act as a mild sedative, combat bad breath, and help treat minor itching and skin irritation. Sounds like a cure-all doesn’t it? But think about how many household and personal products have mint flavor: candy, toothpaste, mouthwash, coffees, ice cream, cough drops, chewing gum, and alcohol. It also scents lotions, shaving cream, and cleansers. There are more than 600 known varieties of mint. Indiana ranks fourth in the country for growing peppermint and fifth in production of spearmint. Some mints you might want to include in your garden are spearmint, peppermint, common mint, apple mint, pineapple mint, orange or chocolate mint, and pennyroyal. Just remember, plant the mint in a location where an out-of-control plant doesn’t matter. Although mint behaves in my yard, many gardeners dislike its unruly spreading. To control mints, plant them in a container or sink a clay pot in the ground to bind its roots. Using mints in my kitchen began years ago when I planted them in my first herb garden. Mints are a staple for garnishing lemonade, iced tea, or a dessert. It’s also fun to freeze mint leaves in ice cubes. I like to sprinkle chopped mint leaves in lettuce or fruit salad for a burst of flavor. Ice cold watermelon chunks sprinkled with fresh mint makes a great combination. Fresh peas with a bit of mint are quite nice. I also like to make mint jelly – sometimes hard to find in the store – simply following the Sure-Jell recipe. I have candied mint leaves, but the process is tedious. Chewing a mint leaf in the garden is revitalizing on a hot day of weeding. And a final tip is to put mint in the coffee basket with the grounds, perk, chill, cream and sugar, and you have the best mint iced coffee in the area! In the Victorian days, each flower and plant had a meaning. Bouquets would be built to send messages. Mint had it place in the language. Can you guess its meaning? Mint was included to express the sentiment of virtue; peppermint and spearmint, a message of warmth and cordiality. Tuck a mint sprig in a bouquet you give a friend or neighbor! It’s never too late to ask for a start of mint from a neighbor or find a pot of it at the garden store. I hope some of my readers add this herb to their backyard this year. The mint family has abundant uses and their behavior will inspire your gardening stories. [Editor’s note: Did you know that at one time Bremen, Indiana was called the “Mint Capital of the World” and has the nickname “Mint City”?] Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Award winners (L to R): Bronze - Brayla Cook (Arlington, TX.), Gold - Christine Jones (East St. Louis), and Silver - Edward Strickling, Jr. (Greater Indianapolis).

BRHS Grad Wins Silver at National Competition Broad Ripple High School graduate Edward Strickling Jr. earned a silver medal at the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, a national academic and talent competition sponsored by the NAACP. Performing in the vocal contemporary music category, Strickling won $1,500 and an iPod or iPad 6 at the competition in San Antonio, Texas, earlier this month. Strickling was one of six Indianapolis students who qualified for the national competition. The students qualified earlier this year by earning excellent scores in their chosen competition categories in Indianapolis. They were sponsored by the Greater Indianapolis NAACP Branch 3053, led by ACT-SO committee chair Mrs. Sandra Parker. “All of Indianapolis should be proud of these talented young people for qualifying for the national competition,” Mrs. Parker said. “The work they’ve put into their craft was apparent at the local competition in April. We are very proud of Edward for winning the silver medal.
