Annual Broad Ripple Carnival at Broad Ripple Park The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) held the annual Carnival at Broad Ripple Park for four days, from August 9th through the 12th. There were rides, food, music, a car show, and a history exhibit.

Annual Hoods and Hops car show

Hoods and Hops, an annual fund raiser for the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA), was held this year at Broad Ripple Park instead of Opti-Park. It was also scheduled to coincide with the Broad Ripple Carnival at the park. The car show, organized by John Hill of the Broad Ripple Brewpub, took place on the north end of the park, by the river. There was lots of shade for the cars and onlookers. More pictures at www.broadripplegazette.com The annual Dog Walk started at BR United Methodist Church and ended at the Carnival.

There was a midway with fair food, games, and kiddie rides, including a carousel and a ferris wheel.

This vintage carved animal head was brought to the history exhibit by a resident. It is reportedly from the original carousel that was at the amusement park at Broad Ripple Park.

Letters from Readers Note to our readers: Letters from Readers are the opinions of our readers and not necessarily those of this paper.

Random Ripplings The new sign is up at the Keystone Diner, 2344 E. 53rd Street. Oldtimers, like your editor, might refer to this area as Jubilee City. The restaurant has new owners and a new name.

Hi BRG, I’ve been traveling to Indianapolis every other week since January for work, and the first thing I grab when I check in is the Gazette. I really enjoy your local focus and community spirit. The articles and Random Ripplings are enjoyable, even for an out-of-stater. I especially like the Broad Ripple Brewpub’s trivia; I have to make a trip there on a Wednesday evening. Thank you for what you do for your neighbors. I’m glad I found your newspaper. Rich Dana Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Hi Bill, Your blurb about the dog attack in the recent issue (“Pit Bull Attacks Jogger’s Dog on Monon Trail”, Vol15. No.15) got my heart pumping, albeit for a different reason than you might expect. I sympathize with the victims and wish them a speedy recovery- we are frequent trail users and want everyone to feel safe. What got my heart beating faster, though, was the profiling and demonizing of a certain breed of dog. I am a dog mom to a mid-sized, short-haired, mutt adopted from the Humane Society of Marion County- you might call her a “pit bull”. I’ve noticed many of us in the Broad Ripple neighborhood adding such dogs to our families. Responsible dog ownership (or lack thereof) is the underlying issue here, not the phenotype of the dog. Any dog can attack any dog. Support for community efforts toward training, education, spaying, and neutering can help minimize these occurrences. Discrimination of any kind has no place in our neighborhood and I encourage you to read more about the history of the issue (Bronwyn Dickey’s Pitbull is a great place to start.) Thanks, Daisy Winkler Broad Ripple Resident and Animal Lover

DPW Announces Fall Creek Bridge Work Plans

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) will reopen the Central Avenue bridge over Fall Creek in Spring 2019. The historic nature of the bridge reconstruction requires extra time to complete. The bridge was initially projected to open in Fall 2018. The sandstone facia of the bridge is being reconstructed with as much of the original stone as possible. These stones must be strategically pieced together with new materials on the bridge. Many of the stones weigh up to three tons. The bridge closed in January 2017 due to erosion on its east side. The Central Avenue bridge first opened in 1905, and its first complete rehabilitation project began in April 2017. Once complete, the Central Avenue bridge will have a new superstructure, deck and sidewalks. In addition, the College Avenue bridge over Fall Creek will close September 17, 2018 for deck resurfacing and sidewalk repairs. The bridge will close for 60 days, reopening November 17, 2018. The College Avenue bridge was constructed in 1905. The cost of repairs to both bridges is $7.6 million. Citizens Energy Group is accelerating their work on Meridian Street at 28th Street in order to accommodate this project. Citizens anticipates opening Meridian Street on September 17, 2018 ahead of its originally projected opening of October 31, 2018. During this construction work, DPW recommends that commuters to downtown use the suggested alternative routes to best avoid the construction activity and congestion along Meridian Street at 28th Street and at the Central Avenue bridge over Fall Creek.

Mosquitoes Carrying West Nile Virus Found in Marion County

The Marion County Public Health Department reports the first mosquitoes of the season to test positive for West Nile virus. Each year, the health department’s Mosquito Control program collects mosquitoes from traps placed in areas around the county to monitor the population and test for West Nile virus. When mosquitoes test positive, the program increases its prevention efforts during daytime and evening hours in the area where the trap is located. No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Marion County so far this year. Most people who become infected with the virus do not develop any symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes and kidney disease are at greater risk for experiencing symptoms which include headache, body aches, joint pains or rash. Less than one percent of people who are infected with West Nile virus will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis. The Marion County Public Health Department encourages everyone to follow the four Ds of mosquito control to help reduce the mosquito population and avoid bites: DUSK – Stay indoors from dusk until dawn. If you do spend time outdoors…. DRESS – Wear long sleeves and long pants when outside during these times. DEET – Use insect repellent containing DEET. DRAINAGE – Remove all standing water outside the home.

“Taking just a few minutes to walk around your yard or property can help reduce the mosquito population,” said Matt Sinsko, coordinator of Mosquito Control at the Marion County Public Health Department. ”Check for old tires, clogged gutters, small recreational pools, and poorly operating septic systems. Also, dump water from containers of any size and flush out bird baths every week.” For questions about mosquito prevention, please call the Marion County Public Health Department’s Mosquito Control program at (317) 221-7440. Information about West Nile virus is available at CDC.gov.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Saffire Revisited – The Uppity Blues Women Friday, August 17 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave. 21+, $20 - 30, doors 9:00, show 9:30

Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women were a well-known touring trio performing from 1984 to 2009. I was lucky enough to see them at the Music Mill in 2006. And our whole city is lucky that Andra Faye now calls Indianapolis her home. The band is: Andra Faye (vocals, bass, mandolin, violin, guitar), Gaye Adegbalola (vocals, guitar), and Kelley Hunt (piano, vocals). Saffire’s music was a combination of serious blues and novelty songs, often focused on feminist themes, making them popular outside the traditional blues circle - myself for instance.

Matthew Aaron is a Renascence man and one of the most interesting people that I know - and I know a lot of people. He’s a wonderful photographer, artist, collector of “murderabilia” (art work and such from convicted murderers), and musician. You may have seen Matthew perform with the band Endinana. He’ll be playing a solo acoustic set featuring songs from the road. I’m looking forward to it.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. The sign going up for the Donut Experiment coming soon to Glendale Town Center, 6159 N. Keystone Avenue, suite 400. This spot next to GNC had been Snapdragon Salon, a long-time carrier of the Gazette.

In 1997 I worked as youth coordinator at Forest Manor Multi-Service Center on East 38th Street. I found the work stressful, but exceptionally rewarding. In the summer we held summer camp for kids 5-12 years of age. It seemed like a growth phase for all involved. We went on many field trips and participated in the NJTL tennis program and the Lee Elder Golf Program. We also developed programs inside the center. We started a jump rope club and a poetry club. The poetry club resulted in a grant establishing The Forest Manor Poets Society through the Community Enhancement Fund. The kids had a quiet/nap time every day. The kids that did not want to take a nap were asked to get a book from the center’s library. The staff would go from kid to kid during quiet time and ask them questions about the book they were reading. Surprisingly to me, the kids really liked this. One day during camp I was being interviewed about our camp by telephone from a local paper. The journalist asked me if they could speak to three of my kids. I asked one of my assistants to bring me three kids. She said, “Which three?” I said, “Any three.” She brought me three youngsters. The first two were younger kids and they spoke of the program in glowing terms. The last kid was older and began citing one thing after another that he loved about the camp. Then he added, “Oh yeah, they let us read.” The interviewer was very interested in this. This taught me that little things do mean a lot and you never know how a seed will flourish. Incidentally, the youngster who made this comment was later on the front page of the Indianapolis Star for taking his high school basketball team to the state finals. Now, I can take no credit for his athletic greatness. However, I can credit him with making me a better kid with a more hopeful view of humanity. CW Pruitt II has been on the poetry scene in Broad Ripple for years. Email your questions/comments to cw@broadripplegazette.com

Support is growing for keeping the Broad Ripple Park outdoor pool open. At our rally and picnic on Saturday August 4, over 30 people enjoyed free Bazbeaux Pizza as we celebrated the treasure that is the BR Park outdoor pool. Many had only recently learned of IndyPark’s plan to [not replace the pool when the time comes]. We now have over 200 signatures on our petition to the Mayor. We had another media event on August 15 before IndyPark’s scheduled presentation to the Department of Metropolitan Development. Our messaging is simple:

Fresh New Plants Arriving Throughout the Season

Aug 17 - Aug 30, 2018

• There has been a pool in the Park for over 100 years. • It is a neighborhood amenity that should be retained. • It helps preventing drowning and saves lives, especially for our minority children who learn to swim at the pool. • It is not too old. The Jordan Y and Rivi pools are much older. • Reforms could help the economics of the pool operation. • IndyParks vague alternative “aquatic experience” plans (splash park, lazy river, turning the pool over to Community Health to build a community center and health clinic) are not equivalent. No one ever learned to swim in a splash park. Join us on Facebook, Friends of Broad Ripple Pool, for the latest updates. Finally, a shout out to the Master Plan process carried out by IndyParks. It was first rate. In no way does our group’s concerns over the closure of the pool detract from the master plan process or the great work IndyParks does in our Village for BR Park, Marott Park, Holliday Park, and the Monon Trail. Thanks! And thanks to Friends of Broad Ripple Park and the BRVA for their work in the village. But let’s have an honest, open, and transparent dialogue on this issue. It’s something downtown does not have, nor Fountain Square. And we are also competing to keep our families here.

Pam was a Broad Ripple resident. According to Mandy Williams of the House, Joy’s House takes care of up to 40 people a day at their facility at 2028 Broad Ripple Avenue. Their next event will be a fund raiser on October 5 at the Scottish Rite Temple. Details at joyshouse.org.

Marott Park trails get a makeover

Have you been to Marott Park lately? IndyParks has just put in new steps on some of the trails and they are fantastic. The old trail was badly eroded. The new rock or limestone trail steps are fantastic. Marott Park is a great park at the corner of 75th and College if you have not been there lately. Thanks IndyParks!!!

It was William Penn (Correction), DTLA beckons

Did you catch my blurb on a weekend in Philly? Reader Linda Cantor points out that the gentleman portrayed atop Philadelphia’s City Hall is actually William Penn, not Benjamin Franklin. I had written an article on visiting Philly. Thanks for the correction! Regarding travel, I just got back from a conference in downtown Los Angeles. If you have not been there lately, they have fixed up and repurposed many downtown buildings and it is worth a trip. You won’t need a car. It is very walkable. I liked the JW Marriott as well as the new hipster hotel, The Freehand. (The rooftop bar and pool were fun at the Freehand.) Downtown LA has historic Art Deco gems like the Central Library, City Hall, and Union Station. Hop on the light rail for a trip to the beach in Santa Monica. I love LA! Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn another, more complex, two-step, way to solve. On the easy puzzle, we see that the 1 in the left section of the middle row would eliminate the 3 spaces in the column to the right of the 5-7 of the upper left section. The 1 in the top middle section would eliminate the spaces to the left and right of the 5. This leaves two possible locations for the eventual 1, the first two spaces from the upper left (in green). This eventual 1 placement will eliminate the top three spaces in the upper right block that contains 2-3-4 (in red). The 1 in the bottom right block will eliminate the spaces about the 4. the 1 in the middle block of the top row will eliminate the spaces on both sides of the 2. This only leaves the space to the left of the 3 for the 1. This complicated technique can come in handy.

Here is an old ad for Haag’s Drug Stores that ran in 1950. The two Broad Ripple area stores at the time were at 6301 Bellefontaine Street (pronounced bell-fountain, now Guilford Avenue. This is where Brothers Bar & Grill is today [G5 on map]) and at 5377 N. College Avenue (this is where Jazz Kitchen is today [OO23 on map]). The 6301 store moved across the street to where Kilroy’s is now. Peoples Drugs bought Haag’s in the 1980s.

I recently spent 21 hours of a Tuesday in Lansing, Michigan. Most of that time was spent swirling, sniffing, sipping and spitting wine as a judge of the Michigan Wine Competition. There were 6 panels of judges, each taking on about 75 wines of all varieties and styles made from Michigan-grown wine grapes and fruit. Over 400 were entered, and a quarter of them earned a Gold medal. Our panel judged flights of sparkling, Pinot Noir, unoaked Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, red and white blends, hybrid blends, fruit wines and medium sweet rieslings. The top wines of each category went to the Sweeps - where all judges tasted the chosen wines to award the Best of Class. This was the first year the competition added an Ice Wine category. Michigan’s climate allows for grapes to be left on the vine past harvest until the grapes freeze and are then harvested, crushed and fermented into lush, decadent, Ice Wine. One of my fellow panel judges was Scott Harvey. Ever heard of the wine called “Menage a Trois”? He created that style and brand decades ago while making wine at Folie a Deux Winery in Napa, California. It was fantastic to have him on the panel. He not only knew all of the characteristics of the grapes and styles, but the precise chemical action/reaction and wine making method that took place, or failed to do so, when we would taste a wine with a “flaw”. As a judge I earned certification to identify those flaws but since I don’t make wine, I admire and appreciate the work of someone who does. Scott has his own label and makes amazing wines from Napa and Amador County grapes. Get them if and when you can. www.scottharveywines.com In the meantime you can find some of these Best of Class Michigan wines on local store shelves or of course on your next trip over the border. The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

A Fall Dinner Party Looking forward to entertaining this Fall? Not sure where to begin in planning? Check out this no-fail guide for a bonfire party, complete with recipes, décor inspiration and sweets. Start with a date and invite your guests. Consider sending paper invitations to set the mood for your event. You could include details for time and place and let friends know what to expect by using a line like “Wear your favorite sweater & cozy up to the fire with us!” On the evening of your party, let guests arrive and see a pretty fall wreath or a pile of gourds on your porch! Have your fire going and set your outdoor area with a nice tablecloth and all the trimmings before company arrives. Your stuff doesn’t have to be fancy, or even match. The effort will show if you’re using china and glassware (not the paper and plastic stuff). You can place a few pumpkins on your table to serve as your centerpiece. Fill in with colored leaves and some small branches. Maybe some acorns if you have them. Set place cards at each place! Small matchboxes with a little name tag attached are simple, inexpensive and clever. What stands out for dinner is everyone’s fall favorite: Chili. (my favorite recipe below!) Piping hot, with all the fixins’. Offer sides of sour cream, hot sauce, jalapeño peppers, onions and cheese. I also love to serve cornbread when I make chili. It seems to be a perfect match. For dessert, S’mores over the fire. Have platters of graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate bars and set out and don’t forget plenty of roasting sticks. I love the ease of this sort of party. It can still be pretty and festive, but the food can be made in advance so you aren’t in the kitchen the whole evening. Enjoy yourself! PRO TIP: Take it up a notch by serving hot cocoa or mulled cider after dinner.

Get Fired up Chili Serves 8

2 pounds ground beef 1 white onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 teaspoon Kosher salt 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper 3 cans (15.5oz) of beans (one each of black beans, dark red kidney beans & great Northern beans) 1 small can (4 oz) of jalapeños, roughly chopped 1 can (28 oz) diced tomatoes 1 small can (6 oz) tomato paste ½ teaspoon Tabasco sauce 1 bottle dark beer (think Guinness, Newcastle, Bell’s Best Brown) Brown ground beef in a stock pot over medium-high heat. Be sure it is browned through and nicely crumbled. Add the onion, garlic, chili powder, cinnamon, cumin, oregano, cayenne and tobacco. Continue cooking & stirring until the onions have softened and are translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the black beans, kidney beans & great Northern beans. Juice and all. Likewise, the tomatoes, tomato paste, jalapenos and beer. Simmer, uncovered on medium-low for about half an hour. You can remove from heat and refrigerate until ready to reheat and serve OR you can simmer on low until ready to serve if you’ve prepared it that day.

Illinois St Bridge Over Central Canal To Close Aug 21 The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) expects the closure of the Illinois Street bridge over the IWC Indiana Central Canal on or after Tuesday, August 21, 2018, weather permitting. The closure will allow for the rehabilitation--including sidewalk and railing replacement–of this bridge in Indy’s midtown community. Local traffic will be able to access the majority of Illinois Street from north of the closure area until the street completely reopens, expected by October 1, 2018. See the graphic below for detour details. During the closure, the following detour will be posted: Traveling northbound–Turn right onto Westfield Boulevard to travel northeast until reaching Meridian Street. Turn left on Meridian Street and travel north until reaching Kessler Boulevard E Drive. Turn left on Kessler Boulevard E Drive and travel west until reaching Illinois Street. Turn left on Illinois Street and travel south until reaching the end of the detour. Traveling southbound–Travel north along Illinois Street until reaching Kessler Boulevard E Drive. Turn right onto Kessler Boulevard E Drive and travel east until reaching Meridian Street. Turn right onto Meridian Street and travel south until reaching Westfield Boulevard. Turn right onto Westfield Boulevard and travel southwest until reconnecting with Illinois Street. Visit indy.gov/DPW for more information on this or other DPW construction projects.

Sweet Buttermilk Cornbread Serves 12

1 stick of unsalted butter, melted, but cooled 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup cornmeal ½ cup dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda pinch of Kosher salt 1 cup buttermilk 1/8 cup of honey 2 large eggs Preheat oven to 400 degrees and lightly grease a muffin pan (you’re going to make 12 muffins). In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking soda and salt. Pour in the buttermilk, honey and eggs and butter. Mix until just combined. Add even amounts of batter to your muffin tin and bake for about 12-15 minutes. Serve warm! PRO TIP: If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make your own substitute! Add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar OR fresh lemon juice to a cup of milk (whole, skim or 2%) and let it sit for 5-8 minutes before using. If you host a fall party and use my recipes, send me a photo! I’d love to include you on my blog. Happy fall, y’all! Elizabeth Morse, owned the Corner Wine Bar in Broad Ripple for close to 20 years.
