Pints For Half-Pints Returns This October

The Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club, along with sponsors and local breweries, will host its seventh annual Pints for Half-Pints on October 26, 2018. All money raised from the fundraiser help support science, technology, engineering, art and math education (STEAM) in midtown public schools. Last year’s event raised approximately $25,000. Proceeds enabled the funding of multiple requests by public midtown schools and teachers to support STEAM academics. The past six Pints for Half-Pints have raised over $83,000 total, and have funded everything from butterfly books and microscopes to music scholarships and robotics teams. The event will include craft beer from BIER Brewery, Broad Ripple Brewpub, Big Lug Canteen, Centerpoint Brewing Company, Mashcraft Brewing, Indiana City Brewing, and Liter House. Wine will also be available. Food trucks will be onsite and Indianapolis band Straight Up Chumps will return to provide live entertainment throughout the evening. The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at The Speak Easy, located at 5255 N. Winthrop Avenue in Indianapolis. Admission is $30.00 per person and includes a souvenir pint glass (while supplies last) plus one drink ticket. Discounted tickets are available until 10/21/18 at www.pfhp.org. Food and additional drink tickets will be sold separately at the event. This event is for ages 21 and over. Established in October 1987, the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of children in the Broad Ripple community. 100% of all proceeds raised goes back into the community. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.pfhp.org.

Church Invites Public to Solar Panel Dedication

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis (UUI) will hold a public dedication of its new solar panel installation at 12:30 PM on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018. Everyone is welcome to attend. The 20-minute event will take place on the church grounds at 615 W 43rd Street. It will include brief presentations by church and community leaders, music, and a ceremony of dedication. Following the event, a Question-and-Answer session will be offered along with refreshments. The purchase and installation of the new solar system is part of UUI’s environmental sustainability commitment. With a long history of involvement in environmental causes, the congregation signed the Paris Pledge in 2015, committing to reduce carbon emissions by 50% before 2030, and 100% by 2050. With the new solar panel system, the church facility will become essentially electrically self-sufficient. The ground-mounted solar panel system is made up of 128, 315-watt panels which will produce about 58,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, helping to prevent the release of about 60 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere by coal-generated commercial power plants. The system cost over $108,000 and was funded by contributions from church members and friends and grants. UUI has been a leader for environmental initiatives in the Indianapolis faith community. It was designated by Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light as an Acclaimed Congregation and it is a founding member of Indy Green Congregations. Nationally, UUI is accredited by the Unitarian Universalist Association as a Green Sanctuary. http://www.uui.org/the-environment or call 317-283-4760.

Statistics show that more than 50 percent of litigants in civil court cases are unrepresented. Ask A Lawyer gives individuals the opportunity to ask whether they have a matter worthy of court action, find out how to proceed or learn where to go for more information. Ask A Lawyer is made possible by a grant from the Indianapolis Bar Foundation and is co-sponsored by the Indianapolis Public Library. The Indianapolis Bar Foundation also funds a variety of other legal advice and assistance programs offered throughout the year by the Indianapolis Bar Association. Rene’s Bakery

Mistakes Can Be Sweet

winner!

We have another winner of the Rene’s Bakery Mistakes Can Be Sweet contest. Paul W. Smith found a typo in The Broad Ripple Gazette. Paul will get a treat (up to $10 value) at Rene’s Bakery located at 6524 Cornell Avenue. You too can enter. Find a mistake in The Gazette and email it to us at contest@ broadripplegazette.com. Rules on page 7.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Walking Wednesday at the Indianapolis City Market Wednesday, October 24 Indianapolis City Market 222 E. Market Street - all-ages, 6-7:30, free

If you haven’t been to the City Market recently this would be a great time to do so. The tour will be led by Stevi Stoesz, the executive director of the Market and creative energy behind not only Market activities, but a whole bunch of cool things happening in our city. The walking tour will explore the lesser known corners and history of the Market, including a tour of the catacombs. The 54th and College CATH coffee house closed 14 years ago this month, but the original CATH in the City Market is still going strong. I spent many early mornings at the Market location in the eight years that I worked at CATH. Being one of the only people in the dark building was a little creepy. I took a wide berth when walking by the opening of the catacombs. I’ve had a tour since then, and it’s fascinating. Meet on the East Plaza of City Market, the walk is free, but you might want to bring some money if you’d like to stop for a snack or drink along the way and the Tomlinson Tap Room featuring Indiana craft beers will be open for after-tour libations.

Sometimes Love comes at a great cost. A devastating cost. An unbearable cost - at least for awhile. In our sorrow it’s worth looking at what we have gained. So it is with Katrina:

Ode 2 Katrina The shocking awe From what we saw Brought us great grief Then sweet relief The tears did flow We got to know A Love so deep Did not come cheap The price is steep But we can keep Treasure we found On sacred ground Realizing Tranquilizing From compassion Not to ration ---- Love ---Often sublime Coming in time To remind us Like a kindness BOMB

The sign at Weaver’s Lawn and Garden says it all. Opened March 1961...Closing November 2018.

Monon Trail To Be Widened

R HE IP

The City-County Council approved $120 million in road improvements which also included widening the Monon Trail as well as building a new bridge to carry bike and foot traffic over 38th Street. The work will begin in 2019. Broad Ripple street improvements were also recently completed. Per Ben Easley of the City of Indianapolis: As both projects involving the Monon are still in their design phase, the details we have are more schedule estimates than technical details. The Monon Trail Resurfacing and Widening project (ST-25-099) will improve the trail corridor between 10th and 96th streets; DPW will manage the construction contract, and we estimate that work will occur during the 2020 construction season. The public has been invited to participate in the design process at any of three public open houses next week; the mid-town location is scheduled for 5-6pm on Thursday, September 27 at Bishop Chatard High School. Early drafts of the design will be available, and staff will be on hand to answer questions and receive public comment. Additionally, the Monon Trail bridge over 38th Street (BR-18-002) will continue in its design phase through much of 2019, also to be constructed primarily in 2020. DPW Project Management staff for this project will also be available at the meetings next week for questions. On the streets side of things, DPW has recently completed several segments as part of resurfacing projects in the Broad Ripple area, including: E 61st Street, from College Ave to Compton St; Carrollton Ave, from 64th to 66th streets; Ferguson Street, from 64th to 67th streets; and Westfield Blvd, from Riviera to Shore Island drives. City-County Councillor Colleen Fanning noted the widening will occur in 2020-2021 and added, “The Monon Trail is an important greenway that allows people to recreate and enjoy many different parts of Indianapolis. I’m thrilled it is getting an upgrade. The widening of the Trail will promote more use and help keep our communities vibrant and connected.”

Officials Question Unauthorized Indy Filing Supporting Nickel Plate/State Fair Rail Corridor Abandonment

Senator Mike Crider and City-County Councillor Jared Evans (as well as US Rail Holdings) have urged the Surface Transportation Board to suspend its proceeding considering allowing the abandonment of the Nickel Plate Corridor (aka State Fair Train) pending an investigation into who in the City of Indianapolis approved support for the controversial plan of Fishers and Noblesville. (See last week’s column and their recent comments to the STB.) Fishers and Noblesville want the tracks converted to a rail trail without a discussion of dual use for transit. In a surprise move that angered regional transit advocates, the City of Indianapolis (via a Chicago law firm) urged prompt action to approve abandonment of the tracks from 10th Street to 96th Street (which run north to north of Noblesville) in a joint filing with Fishers and Noblesville (who are pushing for same) – including ignoring the comments of the two officials.

Sep 28 - Oct 11, 2018

Transit advocates want a joint rail and trail use or at least public comment. DPW called my request for public comment “premature” since no funding has been received to pull up the tracks. But who ok’d such a move in the first place? Why are we spending city funds attacking the positions of local officials before the STB? Why are we in agreement with Fishers and Noblesville? The rail corridor is a regional transit treasure which should not be abandoned without a robust public discussion. Disturbingly, recently some of the tracks appear to have been removed between 13th and 20th Street. Why are we paying a Chicago law firm to attack the positions of Senator Crider and Councilor Evans before a Federal agency? Where is the regional leadership on a discussion of use of the Nickel Plate/State Fair corridor for bus rapid transit, commuter rail, or joint rail and trail use? Why is DPW even involved? Since when are they a regional transit authority? Stay tuned in this developing story. To follow the story, see Save the Nickel Plate on Facebook (for advocates only).

DC Perfect for a Fall Getaway

I was just in Washington, D.C. for a long weekend. I visited the new Waterfront Wharf Area which is full of fun things to do. You can catch a ferry to Georgetown, Alexandria, or National Harbor. There are several new restaurants and hotels. You can buy live crab or grab a shrimp platter at the seafood area. Take the Green Line Metro to Waterfront Station or catch the free SW DC Shuttle. I like the Comfort Inn on 13th Street. Rooms are a bargain and you can walk to the shops and restaurants on 14th Street. The weather is perfect for a visit to the Zoo or a hike up Rock Creek Park. I took American (actually operated by our very own local airline, Republic) to close-in Reagan National Airport and hopped the Yellow Line to Mt. Vernon Station where it is a short walk to the hotel.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the center section that contains 1-2-7-8. The 5 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the space between the 2-7. The 5 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the space between the 1-8. The 5 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 2-8. The 5 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 1-7. The only place left is the very center space. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Tis the season of the outdoor festival–be it art, music or food. A few weekends ago, I poured wine at the closing reception for the artists who took part in the Carmel on Canvas painting competition. Over 70 local artists spent the day painting outdoor scenes of the city. The winners took home prize money and the Best of Show painting will be featured on next year’s Carmel on Canvas T-Shirt. It was a hot humid Saturday, and we figured after spending nearly 8 hours in the heat most would be ready for a crisp, cold white wine. Much to our surprise the majority of those drinking wine chose red. Artists who wanted to quench their thirst went for beer. We had plenty of both and all were pleased. You’ll be pleased too as all are available at local retail outlets. MERF Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington State – It’s big, it’s bold, it’s fruity with mouth filling flavors of black cherry and vanilla. Long lush finish. Josh Carr Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, California – Elegant, smooth, dry red with black fruit flavors and a touch of spice. Villa Pozzi Pinot Grigio, Italy – We DID have a few artists drink white and this one hit the spot. Crisp and dry with lovely aromas and flavors of apple and pear. BIER BREWERY, Indianapolis – We offered two of the local brewery’s top sellers: Special Kolsch – light and refreshing with earthy and grassy notes. Weizengoot – a German style wheat beer, medium bodied and malty.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter The True Symbol of Autumn Colored leaves, crisp mornings, pumpkins, gourds, and apples….all signs of autumn. Times have changed in that pumpkin-pie-spice everything dominates the market. Have you had a pumpkin spice latte, lit a pumpkin-scented candle, eaten a slice of pumpkin pie or pumpkin-spiced waffles? Did you know the apple used to be the tried-and-true sign that heralded autumn and dominated the fall markets? Young people today would never realize that we didn’t get to eat good apples until September. You had to eat as many apples as possible because they were in season. A question for you of the older generation, how many of your dads put a bushel of apples in the coal bin for winter eating and cooking? We ate the first ones and cooked the last ones. So this is my ode to the iconic apple…and that is not a computer or phone. How many of the 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the United States can you name? Here are a few to get you started— Honey crisp, Red and Golden Delicious, Rome, Fuji, Pink Lady, Braeburn, Granny Smith, Jonathan, Sweet Tango, Cortland, Gala, McIntosh, and Lode. From green, yellow, and shades of red, apples are sweet, tart, firm, soft fruits that as many of you know, was the first temptation. Did you know the first American orchard is said to have been planted around 1625 by William Blackstone of Boston? Other famous folks followed as apple planters like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and our own Johnny Appleseed. Here are some fun facts to sharpen your knowledge of apples. • Apples contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol and are a good source of fiber. • Apple trees take four to five years to produce their first fruit. • Apples are a member of the rose family. • Only crabapple trees are native to North America. • A peck of apples weighs 10.5 pounds. A bushel of apples weighs about 42 pounds. • It takes about 5 years to create a new apple cultivar, and only 1 in 5,000 attempts will make it to market. Apples are woven into our culture and language. Have you heard of the Irish custom that has you throwing an apple peel over your shoulder? It is supposed to form the initial of your lover´s name. Also, when peeling an apple, the number of times the peel breaks is the number of children you will have. The apple’s artistic and literary symbolism is of love, desire, and temptation. You have heard of sayings like, “Apple of my eye,” “One bad apple spoils the bunch,” “Apple for the Teacher,” and “Apple Polisher.” Did you know that the Adam´s apple designation for the bump on a man´s throat was thought to be caused by swallowing a piece of forbidden apple from the Garden of Eden´s Tree of Knowledge? “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” rings true more now than ever as our knowledge of apples’ many health benefits increases. “As American as apple pie” saying caught on when apple pie became the symbol of American prosperity, causing one American newspaper to proclaim in 1902, “No pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished.” I grew up going to Lilly Orchard, once on the grounds where Park Tudor is now. We would stop at the orchard after a Butler home football game, load up bags with apples, and carry home a jug of fresh cider. The apples became pies, applesauce, apple butter, Apple Brown Betty, and fried apples. The kitchen smelled of baked apples, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg. You knew the calendar had moved on from summer as soon as the apples came into the house. Move over pumpkins. This year celebrate fall with apples. Have an apple tasting session, bake an apple pie, toss apple slices into your turkey dressing, learn to make oven apple butter. You can even try a brewing adventure of making hard cider. Visit a local orchard and put the apple back into autumn! Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Visit her web site www.feedbackyardbirds.com. If you’re ever in Broad Ripple and you see a cute little Chihuahua in a sweater walking himself (carrying his own leash) say hello to Milos (pronounced “Mee-lōsh”) and give him a pat and a cuddle. Look on Instagram under Milos and Tali, because Tali (the cat) & Milos are best buddies. You might even say hi to their human. His name is Brian....I ran into them the other day on a walk about.
