Indy Thunder Beep Ball Three-Peat!

GM/Coach Darnell Booker (holding the microphone) handed out the team awards at the Pawn Shop Pub ceremony. The three World Series cups are on the table.

By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com Our local beep ball team, the Indy Thunder, recently won the NBBA 2018 Beep Baseball World Series that was held in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. There were 22 teams in the series, including one from Taiwan. The Indy Thunder has won the series three times in a row 2016, 2017 and 2018. Darnell Booker, General Manager/Coach, said the team’s record during the past three years is 67 wins, 3 losses. “Yes, we are Indiana’s team, but is it awesome that we are based right here in Broad Ripple. We practice in the springtime at Broad Ripple Park, Optimist Park, and at Park Tudor. I want to thank all of the businesses in Broad Ripple that have supported us.” The Pawn Shop Pub both hosted the awards ceremony and provided the food. Many other local businesses help the team with hats, shirts, and other needs.

my.indy.gov website changes how residents access services

A year and a half after the City of Indianapolis and Marion County launched Shift Indy, a two-year initiative focused on recreating the Indy.gov website, my.indy.gov has greatly improved the way online users access city and county government services in Indianapolis and Marion County. Today, residents select from over 50 digital services such as paying their property taxes, requesting a homestead deduction, locating their polling place, requesting additional police presence and more. New services and content are being added throughout the remainder of 2018. The overall goal of the project is to improve government services making it more accessible and efficient for citizens, businesses and visitors. A major improvement to the site is the speed in which users can access information and the speed in which things can get done online. When complete, the site will allow users the opportunity to access city and county government services in Indianapolis and Marion County in a way they have not been able to in the past. A number of digital services have already been launched, with plans to launch several more in the months to come. Nearly 10,000 new users accessed the site in June alone. Organizers of the project are spreading the news about the new site through community outreach. Users of my.indy.gov can continue to expect new service roll-outs and website enhancements throughout 2018. To explore the site, visit my.indy.gov.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Back in the winter of 1998/99 we were frying up potatoes every day. Adding flavor from a rack of spices, we were enjoying our poverty. Josh Strodtman would often drop by during morning potato time. One day Josh dropped in as I was cooking potatoes to start the day. We began to discuss the origin of beautiful ideas in human consciousness. Josh then said something that has stuck with me more than the starch from all of those potatoes: “It’s like there are fruit trees which grow from the Earth and stretch into the Heavens. When the fruit is ripe, it falls to the ground. The humble look down, pick it up, and share it with the world.”

To Joshua Strodtman

The Riviera Club, 5640 Illinois Street [LL19 on map], held a Dive Tank Wake on September 26. During pool reconstruction it was determined that the 1957 above-ground diving tank was beyond repair and must be removed. Attendees could sign one of the old diving boards.

No sooner had he emailed me we noticed E. 61st Street from College Avenue to Compton Avenue was seeing work with concrete cutting tools. Thanks DPW!

Red Line Construction Coming to College Avenue Utility line relocation in preparation for IndyGo’s Red Line bus rapid transit is coming to College Avenue. Water and gas utility relocations on College Avenue will begin in October or November, in advance of Red Line construction. Crews will be relocating sections of water main and/or fire hydrants at the following intersections over the next several months, with gas main relocations to follow: 42nd Street, 44th Street, 46th Street, 49th Street, 52nd Street, 54th Street, 56th Street, 57th Street, 61st Street, Broad Ripple Avenue, and 66th Street. Per IndyGo: Work at each location is expected to take approximately 14 days. Where necessary, flashing arrow boards, flaggers, and/or traffic officers will be used to divert vehicles around work zones. Travelers should expect possible on-street parking restrictions, traffic pattern shifts, or partial lane closures with flaggers. One lane of traffic will be maintained

Property owners will be notified in advance by the utility if their service will be affected. Need Health Insurance? Open Enrollment Starts November 1 for 2019 Need health insurance? Save The Regional Rail Corridor For Transit/Trail Use Did you see my letter to the editor in the IBJ? I also have an op-ed in All Aboard Indiana (www.indianahighspeedrail.org). The topic is preserving the State Fair train tracks (aka the Nickel Plate) for joint transit and rail use (and ending DPW’s odd partnership with Fishers to have the Surface Transportation Board “promptly” approve abandonment of the tracks which run from 10th Street to north of Noblesville). Advocates are welcome to join Save the Nickel Plate on Facebook. Get Out Of The Ripple-Four Lakes City Worth A Visit Have you visited Madison, Wisconsin? It’s one of the few cities in the world located on an isthmus (between 2 large lakes) where just a mile or two separates them. The beautiful State Capitol and State Street are a must as is the UW Memorial Union where you can enjoy a brat and a microbrew. It’s the only student union in the country serving beer. Pick up some cheese or a gourmet cheese and salami sandwich at Fromagination on the Capitol Square (222 S. Carroll Street) or grab lunch at Casetta at 222 West Washington. The sesame salad is very good as is the Pasta e Fagioli soup (tomato with sausage). Don’t miss Olbrich Botanical Gardens just east of downtown and Williamson Street (Madison’s version of hipster Portland). Nearby state parks like Devils Lake in the Baraboo Hills are great for hiking and families will love the water parks in Wisconsin Dells. Nearby Milwaukee has a great art museum on Lake Michigan, a Public Market, and a new street car which starts service November 1. The Third Ward is another must. You can’t beat a weekend (or week) in the Badger State. (And go Badgers as the battle Purdue next month). Bill Malcolm is the founder of Friends of Broad Ripple Pool and Hoosiers for Passenger Rail. He also writes for ALL ABOARD INDIANA and has a syndicated travel column. These are hobbies. The views expressed are his own. Send feedback and story ideas to him at bill@broadripplegazette.com

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 1 in the right section of the middle row that contains 4-7-8. The 1 in the center section eliminates the spaces to the right of the 4. The 1 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 8. The 1 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces above the 4. The only place left is to the left of the 7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

#Champagne Day If you ask me, EVERY DAY is a good day to drink Champagne. The official Champagne Bureau in France has designated October 19th as the Global Day of Champagne. It’s really a marketing campaign started nine years ago, but if it makes more people stop, sip and savor then I am all for it. All Champagne is considered a sparkling wine but not all sparkling wine is considered to be champagne. The French bureau says that designation can only be given to the bubbly made in the Champagne region of France. Domestic producers differ. You’ll see the champagne name on sparkling wines from various states including Indiana, as Easley Winery makes a softly sweet bubbly called “American Champagne”. There are pros and cons to both sides. I will leave the taste test up to you. As you do, here is one of my favorite odes to the elixir. “Here’s to champagne, the drink divine, that takes away our troubles. It’s made from a dollars worth of wine and three dollars worth of bubbles.” I was delighted to spy both the pricey and the practical next to each other on a grocery store shelf. No excuse to NOT chill and swill a bottle on the 19th!

9 Inch Double Crust Pie Pastry

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

3 c. all-purpose flour 1 ¼ c. Crisco 1 egg ½ tsp. salt 4 T. ice water 2 t. white or apple cider vinegar ½ t. vanilla extract

Using a pastry cutter or fork, blend flour, shortening and salt. In a second bowl, beat egg then add ice water, vinegar and vanilla. Add the liquids to flour mixture and stir to combine. Divide dough into two equal portions and roll out on a floured surface.

Apple Pie Filling

Apple Pie Last month I wrote about Persimmons. My pudding recipe had an omission, I forgot to list two eggs in the ingredient list. I apologize for the oversight and thanks to those of you who caught it and reached out. One such reader was Rob Pickett. His wife noticed the typo. When Rob emailed, he also shared that Persimmon Pudding had been a Thanksgiving tradition in his family for decades, with a recipe from his Grandmother dating back to the early 1900’s. Rob’s family serves the pudding cut into squares, warmed in a small dish, with cold sweet cream poured over. Rob sent several old copies of the recipe for me to see, but this beauty is the oldest. I have permission to share it and I thought I’d include it for your enjoyment. Persimmon pudding really is a lovely nod to our Hoosier heritage. Another fall favorite here in Indiana celebrates the apple harvests that are typically abundant. Like many celebrated dishes, most families have their own favorite recipes that speak to memories and preferences. I thought I’d share mine today. If you prefer, you can use pie dough from the grocery store that’s already rolled out. It’s found in the refrigerated section. I enjoy this recipe:

½ cup butter 3 T. all-purpose flour ½ cup sugar ½ cup brown sugar ¼ c. water 8 firm, tart apples- cored, peeled and sliced (i.e. Granny Smith) 1 t cinnamon ½ t. cardamom

Preheat oven to 425. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat & stir in flour to form a roux. Stir constantly for a minute or two, until the roux (paste) becomes golden. Add water, white and brown sugar and spices. Reduce heat to low and simmer. Line a pie pan with one of your two crusts and fill with sliced apples. Try to mound the apples a bit higher in the center. Pour the simmering mixture carefully over apples and top with second crust. Crimp the edges of your pie to seal the crusts, then use a sharp knife to cut a few pretty slits in the crust so steam can escape. Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the temperature to 350 and bake for 40 minutes. Let the pie rest at least ½ an hour before serving so that the filling “sets up”. Slice into eight servings and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

PRO TIPS:

• This pie is a perfect candidate for a lattice crust if you are so inclined. • This pie is fantastic with a ¼ cup of sharp cheddar cheese or a Norwegian cheese called Gjetost (pronounced “YAY-toast” and sold at Kroger under the name Ski Queen) sprinkled on the top crust during the last 15 minutes of baking.
