The Broad Ripple Village Association office has moved to 818 Broad Ripple Avenue [H4 on map].

alan@broadripplegazette.com There were four items on the published agenda, but a fifth was added, at the October 23 public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee (see in bold below). There were approximately 50 in attendance. 1) 6170 College Avenue, Jason Rose regarding a variance of use to establish a law office at this location. The petitioner was not present, so this item was skipped. 2) (Added) 6525 Ferguson. Variance to allow for a salon use. This proposal is to open a salon in an existing building. The City of Indianapolis staff is recommending denial. The BRVA committee asked the petitioner to work with staff to see if a new recommendation can be reached. At that time, the committee would vote. 3) 723 Broad Ripple Avenue, Matthew Smith and Michael Martinez, Coowners of One Up, an arcade bar. Alcoholic beverage permit pending hearing on November 5, 2018. This item is for a 3-way liquor license for the new arcade bar One Up. The owners agreed to the conditions required by the BRVA and said this would not be a late-night bar, instead the latest it would be open is 1am. 4) 6116 Guilford Avenue, David Kingen and Justin Kingen regarding a variance of development standards to provide for two single-family residential lots, with lot widths of 40 and 49 feet (50 feet required) and to provide for detached garages with 3.3 foot rear setbacks (five-foot required). Petition #2018-DV3-049 Hearing continued to Tuesday, November 20, 2018 before the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals. This case was heard last month also, but was heard again due to a number of neighbors opposed to the project. Most of the opposition seems to be related to the narrower lot width of the proposed south lot. The committee decided to wait for the City of Indianapolis’ final recommendation before making a decision. 5) 62nd Street blocks of College and Carrollton Avenues, BR Housing Partners, LLC, information regarding redevelopment. This proposal is to raze seven buildings on the south half of the block bounded by College, Carrollton, 62nd and Broad Ripple Avenue. This includes New Paradigm Christian Church, a dentist office (on Carrollton), Dinwiddies, Stretch Logistics, Adorn, Ado, a dentist office (on College) and AMG Property Management. The five-story mixed-use apartment/ retail/parking structure would occupy the entire space. This would include vacating the south half of the alley, from Lincolnshire Apartments to 62nd Street. There were many comments made by the committee including concerns with vacating the alley, as it provides a significant way of ingress to the block. Removing that would require all traffic visiting the remaining businesses on the block to come via Broad Ripple Avenue and then down Carrollton. Another concern was the zero setback of the building from the streets. The petitioners agreed to take these concerns and modify the proposal and to come back to the BRVA’s November meeting. The next public meeting of the BRVA Land Use and Development committee is scheduled for Tuesday, November 27, starting at 6pm in the basement of Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard.

BRVA President Joshua John presenting the year in review.

Annual BRVA meeting and board election The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) annual meeting and election was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on October 16th. There were approximately 100 in attendance. BRVA President Joshua John started the meeting with a year in review, highlighting the accomplishments of the neighborhood association since the last annual meeting. Next, Kent Springer explained some changes that have been made. This year, a BRVA committee chose five candidates from the larger group that vied for the five open board positions. The member election ballot lists that slate of candidates with a choice to approve or not that slate of five. Kent stated that this streamlining of the board election process was requested by both members and past candidates. Another change was to extend the one year officer terms to two years. Then, IMPD and IndyGo spoke. There were many questions about police beats, crime stats and the Red Line construction (indygored.com). Sydney Johnson described the on-going White River Master Plan process and announced upcoming meetings. Details at mywhiteriver.com Attendees submitted their ballots after the meeting. The slate of new board members was David Amstutz, Jerry Harbin, Garrett Lawton, Andy Skinner, and Karen Valiquett.

A grass skirt trim appeared on the awning at 1001 Broad Ripple Avenue. This is a sign that the Cholita Taqueria and Tiki Tiki Lounge is coming soon.

Broad Ripple United Methodist Church Thanksgiving

The Turkey Spirit is upon us and we at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church want to invite you to the All Community Turkey Dinner November 9th, from 5-7:30 PM. This Dinner has been an ongoing tradition for over 40 years in the Broad Ripple Community and we invite you to become a part of the tradition. The cost is $8.00 per person, $7.00 for Senior Citizens, and $5.00 for children under 12 years of age. We continue to offer free dinner for Veterans and persons who are experiencing troubled times and need a delicious hot meal. The menu consists of a great turkey casserole with lots of turkey, and sides of mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes w/marshmallows, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, rolls & butter, and a wide variety of desserts. Ham is also available for those not fond of Turkey. We welcome volunteers from the community to help us put on this fantastic dinner. We need help with serving, busing tables, and clean-up etc. You are a part of this community and know that it takes a village to provide service to those around us. There is no better or more rewarding way to meet your neighbor than through a community service project. You don’t have to be a member of the church to volunteer. Please let us know by email at brumcadmin@sbcglobal.net if you are able to share in the volunteering. Of course you are welcome to come for dinner first and then stay to help. The clean-up usually takes about an hour or two, depending on the number of helpers. You are loved and appreciated!

St. Vincent Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs Oct. 27th St. Vincent and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public an opportunity to discard potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs from 10am – 2pm, October 27 at St. Vincent Hospital, 2001 W. 86th St., Indianapolis. Volunteers will be stationed at the main entrance of the hospital (Door #1) to help collect unwanted prescription drugs. The public can bring their pills for disposal for free without any questions asked. (NOTE: The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) Earlier this year, Americans turned in 474 tons (over 949,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,800 sites operated by the DEA. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October 27 Take Back Day event, go to the DEA Diversion website or contact Wendy LeMasters, Pharmacy Services, St. Vincent Indianapolis, at 317-338-7899.

The Business Of Beer

The Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association will host The Business of Beer on November 12th at Liter House located at 5301 Winthrop Avenue from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The program will feature a candid, community conversation on the economic impact of the beer business and the role it plays in neighborhoods like MK. “We have so many beer-centric fixtures in MK and even more are coming,” says MKNA executive director Chelsea Marburger. “Whether it’s restaurants that serve it alongside food with an optional family setting like Twenty Tap or Fat Dan’s, or a dedicated tap room like Upland or Scarlet Lane, the brewing industry is a part of the unique culture of Meridian-Kessler and we want to talk about how and why that is and it’s effects on the community.” The conversation will feature a panel of professionals that work in the beer business including: Isaac Arthur-CODO Design, David Bower-Upland Brewing Co., Drew Klacik-IU Public Policy Institute, Eddie Sahm-Liter House - Big Lug - Sahm’s Restaurant, and Nick Service-Scarlet Lane Brewing Co. The conversation will have a decidedly business slant and is open to the 21+ public with the purchase of a ticket. “Rather than talk about hops, barrels and production, we want to focus on how breweries become fixtures in their communities,” says Rob Caputo executive director of The Brewers of Indiana Guild who will serve as moderator for the panel. “Breweries are responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations to NGO’s each year, positively contribute to local economies and create jobs.” Tickets for The Business of Beer are $25 and include complimentary brews and bites from Liter House, networking and a tour of Liter House following the panel. Space is limited and tickets are on sale now at: http://bit.ly/TBoBTickets

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Whoa! This is my 13th anniversary of writing for the wonderful Broad Ripple Gazette; column #328 if you’re keeping score. Much to editor, Alan Hague’s, chagrin it’s probably the 307th one that I’ve turned in late. So many great things have happened as a direct result of my association with this paper. I’ve met many of you wonderful readers, heard hundreds of talented bands, attended art shows and book launches, and have kept up on what is happening around town. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have left the house nearly as much without the gentle shove of this column. Thanks to Alan and the freedom he’s given me to write pretty much whatever I please, I now freelance for NUVO newsweekly and Ghettoblaster Magazine. Did you know that you can find a treasure trove of archived articles and photographs on www.broadripplegazette.com? I look forward to the next 13 years - if Alan will have me.

This edition of the Uncle Dan Wakefield and Sophie Faught Jam will focus on mentors. In fact, you can win cool stuff (including two tickets to the show) by writing about one of your real-life mentors. Rush to Dan’s website and submit your short essay by October 29. And let us reflect on how lucky are we to have Dan living in our neighborhood and generously sharing his time with us. I had dinner with him last week and I had to keep myself from jumping on the bench and telling everyone in Sangrita Saloon about Dan and his impressive body of work. His published books span almost 60 years and he shows no sign of slowing down. Did you know that he created the prime time series (1977-78) James at 16? Or that his novel, Going All the Way, was nominated for a National Book Award? Dan and Sophie will be talking about their mentors and will be joined by composer, piano player, by mentor to many, Steve Allee. All-star drummer, Kenny Phelps, rounds out the band. This will be the last Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam for a few months. Sophie is expecting another sweet baby soon, so make sure to catch this one. I’ll see you there!

Lou Harry Gets Real Sunday, November 11 The Aristocrat Pub - Oxford Room 5212 N. College Ave - all-ages, doors 5, show 6 - 8, $15

Lou Harry is on a mission - to provide coverage about Indianapolis’ great arts scene. He’s helping do that with a podcast series highlighting theater, visual arts, music, and comedy. I’ve attend the first two and they’re entertaining and informative. November’s episode features two people that cover a big swath of arts in Indiana - Tim Grimm and Jan Lucas-Grimm. Tim is one of my favorite singer-songwriters. He was kind enough to play at CATH coffeehouse a few times – I was beside myself with glee. He was also a big-time L.A. film and television actor, who now shares his talents with the IRT, both as an actor and composer. Jan Lucas-Grimm is also an actress, musician, and author. If that’s not enough, they have raised and nurtured two wildly talented musician sons. This promises to be a fun evening of stories and music. Visit Lou’s website to listen to the previous podcasts and for more information about attending the live taping.

Signs are up stating that Vitality IV Bar will open soon at 6302 Guilford Avenue. This is the previous location for Just Pop In. The Vitality IV Bar offers IVs with vitamins and nutrients.

A lot of people I meet say that they are atheists or agnostics. To these individuals, I always ask three questions: 1) Do you believe in Love? 2) Do you believe that Love is an energy? 3) Do you believe that that energy has a source? If they answer yes to all three questions, I do not consider that person an atheist or agnostic, but a person with undefined religious faith. This poem is for those people:

Humility is never obtained. It involves twining twining and retwining to the Source of all that is. Whether you call the Source God Jehovah Great Spirit Higher Power or Allah does not matter. What matters is soaking up the essence of the Source. And that essence is Love.

Indy defers to Fishers on transit planning for regional rail corridor The mystery of why the DPW (and not the MPO) was joining with Fishers to urge the Surface Transportation Board to promptly approve abandonment of the Nickel Plate / State Fair train tracks has been solved. The Metropolitan Planning Organization says on their website that once Fishers decided to convert their section to a trail in 2017, the plan to use the corridor (from 10th Street to beyond Noblesville) for a bus rapid transit route is “out of play”. So one small suburban city calls the shots ignoring the regional potential of the Nickel Plate/State Fair train tracks.

From the MPO website: The Green Line is a proposed a rapid transit solution for the northeast corridor of Central Indiana, from Downtown Indianapolis to Noblesville, primarily using the Nickel Plate Railroad corridor. During the environmental study phase of the Green Line, feasibility issues including route and financial sustainability were identified. With technology and source of funding in question, the Federal Transit Administration encouraged the MPO to put the remainder of the environmental study on hold until more specifics on the future of the Green Line could be determined. At a joint meeting on July 31, 2017 the City of Fishers, City of Noblesville, and Hamilton County Commissioners voted to convert the Nickel Plate line into a recreational trail from 96th Street in Fishers to Pleasant Street in Noblesville. With the rail corridor now out of play for transit, and technology and funding questions remaining, the MPO has no timeline for resuming Green Line planning. An email to me from MPO simply stated that since no Federal funds are involved, they were not involved in the recent DPW/Fishers/Noblesville pleadings to the STB. Anna Gremling, Executive Director stated: (My questions and her answers) 1. Is MPO aware that DPW has joined with Fishers and Noblesville in urging the Surface Transportation Board to promptly authorize abandonment of the 51-mile regional rail corridor aka the Nickel Plate/State Fair train tracks? Since federal funding is not involved at this time, the MPO is not involved. 2. If yes, why were no public comments sought? 3. If no, can you state why DPW is involved. This is out of the MPO’s purview as there is no federal funding involved. 4. Does MPO feel that a joint rail and trail use might be possible? That the corridor could be preserved for regional bus rapid transit, enhanced Amtrak service, commuter rail, special events rail?

Oct 26 - Nov 8, 2018

The corridor lacks right-of-way to do both. Again, the regional rail corridor should be preserved for bus rapid transit, expanded Amtrak service, or commuter rail before allowing Fishers to convert the rail to only a trail. And Indianapolis and MPO should not defer regional transit planning to one suburban city, Fishers. Yes, we all like rail trails but the Nickel Plate/State Fair rail corridor should not be promptly abandoned and DPW should not be partnering with Fishers in this issue.

BR election news

Be sure and vote November 6. There are many races in addition to the U.S. Senate race. NoBro residents in District 5 find incumbent Congresswoman Susan Brooks facing Dee Thornton. In State Representative District 87, incumbent Cary Hamilton faces Paul Finch. In the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township race in District 2, Alexandra Curlin faces Donald Kite. In the at-large race, William Turner faces Jason Welch. (Good luck finding any information about the school district candidates.) For those in IPS, there is a ballot measure to increase taxes for additional funds for IPS. Call 327-VOTE for 327-5100 for more information including where to vote, early voting, absentee ballots, and more.

Open Enrollment for Health Care Insurance Begins

Need health insurance? Have a pre-existing condition? Need a subsidy? The Health Care Exchange Open enrollment starts November 1. The 2019 Open Enrollment Period runs from Thursday, November 1, 2018, to Saturday, December 15, 2018. If you don’t act by December 15, you can’t get 2019 coverage. Plans sold during Open Enrollment start January 1, 2019.Details at www.healthcare.gov. I was on this Federal government-run health insurance program (aka the Affordable Care Act or ObamaCare) and it was great. Free physical. Free flu shot. They only ask 2 questions on the application – if you smoke and what your age is. There are no lifetime limits to coverage. They can’t ask about pre-existing conditions. And best of all you may qualify for a subsidy. Remember, you are only one fall away from a trip to the emergency room or worse. You need health insurance. If you don’t have health insurance, be sure and sign up. And don’t be tricked into buying the new limited coverage health insurance options. They cap what they pay at low unreasonable amounts and have other onerous restrictions. Finally, If you are low income, you may qualify for the Healthy Indiana Plan 2.0 which is a separate program run by the state which is a modified Medicaid program. (Note persons over 65 get Medicare (which has open enrollment going on now) while many with jobs get health insurance through their employer. So you don’t need the Health Care Exchange. Ditto if you are on COBRA coverage and don’t want to switch.) It’s complicated but not as bad as a trip to the emergency room without insurance. Bill Malcolm is the founder of Friends of Broad Ripple Pool and Hoosiers for Passenger Rail. He also writes for ALL ABOARD INDIANA and has a syndicated travel column. These are hobbies. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 9 in the center section of the middle row that contains 2-3-7-8. The 9 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the 3 spaces in the middle row. The 9 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space to the left of the 3. The only place left is to the right of the 7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Vintage 2018 The Hoosier wine grape harvest is in. Juice is fermenting and bottling will begin for some of the white wines early next year, according to the man in the know when it comes to “all things wine grape”, Bruce Bordelon. Among many titles, he is Professor of Viticulture in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Purdue University. Bruce has spent decades in the states vineyards, working hands-on with both grapes and the wine makers growing them. His lab work at Purdue has increased the quality and quantity of Indiana’s wine grape harvests each year. I emailed with him to learn more about this years harvest. “Quality was good for the most part. There’s quite a bit of late leaf diseases this year, but they don’t really hurt grape/wine quality. Probably more rain this harvest season than growers wanted, but that’s the Midwest and we know how to deal with it,” says Bordelon. He says the reds like Chambourcin and Norton fared the best because of the high temperatures. Late ripening grapes like Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petite Verdot also benefited from the hotter than normal summer and fall. You’ll have to wait till fall of 2019 or Spring of 2020 to try them. Bordelon says most will age in barrel for 3-18 months before bottling. Here’s a big bold red to savor while you wait. PROPHECY RED. The lovers on the label reflect the harmony of the juice inside. This dry red offers up ripe rich flavors of cherry and blueberry jam with an uplifting touch of anise. Lush, but not flabby with a smooth dry finish. Widely available and priced at $11 or less.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Fall Creations You Can Do… Each season inspires us to decorate our stores, homes, and yards. Unique to fall are the colors of oranges, yellows, reds and browns. Pumpkins, gourds, leaves, corn stalks and Indian corn, and scarecrows represent this season. Fall is a perfect occasion to bring in nature and a harvest time theme with a little imagination and creativity. Here are some super simple crafts you can make to liven up your décor. First go outside (in your own backyard or take a walk) and hunt for leaves. Each year the tradition of finding the biggest, reddest, or multicolored leaves is my treasure hunt. I collect handfuls of jewels, colored leaves, and bring them in to sprinkle on tables and scatter around a bowl of apples on the dining table. If you love looking and enjoying each leaf that falls, explore some different ways to immerse yourself in this season’s offerings! Use leaves as the base to create your own art. • The real leaf: Glue leaves to a cardboard ring to make a wreath. Make a mask base out of cardboard and glue leaves to it. It will look like a Mardi Gras costume! Press or wax leaves to use as a table décor or tuck in fall arrangements. Use a real leaf to make wall art. Search online for videos that show do-it-yourself projects using leaves. • Stencils: Don’t hesitate to try a stencil. Pick a leaf, big or small, and trace it on acetate or heavy paper. Using a razor blade, small scissors, or X-Acto knife, cut out the shape. You now have a great stencil to use to make custom placemats, or paint on canvas or fabric, collage pictures or even walls and windows. The leaf you cut out can be the pattern for other projects. • Patterns: The leaf is your pattern. Place them on paper and trace around them. When you have a final shape, cut it out. You have the shape of the leaf. Now you can paint it, color the cutout with pencil or crayon, or even use glue and dust with glitter. Try making a name tag, a place card, glue it to a stick and poke them in a potted plant. You can punch a hole in the leaf, string it with thread or ribbon. Do this with five to ten leaves and tie them on a pretty branch−you have just created a mobile. Or you can hang them from a chandelier. Another project is to use the pattern or real leaf, trace it on a sticky vinyl, cut it out, adhere it to a Mason jar. Spray paint the jar and let it dry. Then peel off the leaf pattern, drop in a votive candle, and tie a ribbon or raffia around the top of the jar. What a perfect gift or addition to a fall tablescape. • Rubbings: This is a fun project to do at any age. Place the leaf under a paper and use colored pencil, pencil, crayons, or pastels and rub over the leaf. Try different kinds and textures of paper. Now you have a perfect image of the leaf you collected. Make placemats, art work, greeting cards, wrapping paper, or a table runner. When doing this activity with children, you can talk about the parts of the leaf: The stalk (the part that attaches the leaf to the tree), the blade (the flat part of the leaf and changes from green to fall colors), and the veins (they carry food and water to the tree). You can point out that edges of the leaves are either serrated or smooth. All of these features help identify what kind of leaf it is. Let me share this year’s project that I did. I made a “sunflower” wreath to celebrate fall. All you need is a wire wreath frame, about two dozen field corn ears in the husk, pine cones, and wire. Husk the corn trying to keep the stem on the husks. Arrange the husk like they were on the corn. Then wire the cluster onto the frame. When wreath is packed, begin wiring the pine cones until you cover the center. I will display this until Thanksgiving. The only cost was the wire form! Just an encouraging note to my readers: look to nature, bring beautiful fall leaves, acorns, seed pods, and grasses indoors. Make something for yourself, a gift for a neighbor, and a child so you continue autumn traditions. Happy crafting.
