INDEX

Sam Cooney is Operations Manager of Burger Fuel, located at 6320 Guilford Avenue. He recently discussed the distinctive murals painted on the restaurant’s south side wall and parking lot in addition to others painted around Broad Ripple. “We have one on our restaurant and have partnered with other businesses to paint murals on their walls. There’s one on the back wall at Ossip Optometry (804 Broad Ripple Avenue) with different pairs of glasses. We have one on Bright Ideas (7425 Westfield Boulevard) with two birds that symbolize a father and his nestling. We have a mural on the side of the Egyptian Lounge (6265 Carrollton Avenue) right next to the U.S. Post Office,” he explained. They were among eight murals painted in a week by Burger Fuel’s resident artist Kairau “Haser” Bradley who used 136 cans of spray paint. “One of our guys from New Zealand flies around the world painting murals at our stores and in their neighborhoods. His day job is a graphic designer at BurgerFuel HQ, his night job is painting murals. We made a great impact at the start, but it’s important that we partner with local artists as well to continue our work in the community. We work with local Indianapolis artists FAB Crew who have added to our parking lot mural wall, and who painted our most recent mural at Passwater Auto Specialists (located at 821 Broad Ripple Avenue), which is a throwback to the bootlegging origins of NASCAR,” Cooney said. (He organized the activities that involved creating the murals.) In addition to the murals, Burger Fuel gives back to the community. “Another unique community activity that we do is a program called Common-Unity. Each month, we pick three charities from the local community, and we donate $500 to them photo by Mario Morone ($250 for first place, $150 for A male bird at Bright Ideas at 7425 Westfield Boulevard. second place and $100 for third place). Customers receive a purple token when they order and can vote for one of the three causes by dropping their token into the respective jar at the restaurant. We put up the money and just get our customers to tell us how to divvy up the money each month. In the year that we’re been open, we have given over $6,000 to local charities. We think that Broad Ripple is a cool little village. That’s why we came here and we work with the community wherever we can, as we want to see Broad Ripple thrive. Partnering with charities, adding culture through painting the murals, and putting on local events are some of the ways we do this. On August 4th, we threw our first anniversary birthday party. That was to thank everyone in the community for

their support and to give back by putting on a really cool event,” Cooney mentioned. Burger Fuel is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Cooney arrived in the United States in June of 2017. His initial impressions of Indianapolis were, “A cool little city, with good spots to visit once you learn and scout them out.” “Part of our brand is trying to be a bit different from a regular food or burger place. We have been painting murals for 20 years. When we arrived in Indianapolis, we started painting and have just been adding to those over the last year. Burger Fuel opened on May 29, on Memorial Day 2017. We thought the Midwest was a good place to start and we homed in on Indianapolis and within it, we found Broad Ripple. It kind of reminded us of where we opened our first store in New Zealand in 1995. It has a similar vibe with the Village. It has been a good place to start and the plan is to circle out from here,” he noted. Cooney described their menu. “We give a fresh and modern take on the hamburger,

specializing in fresh and real ingredients. We serve grass-fed beef and free-range chicken. Almost everything is made fresh in the store daily. We don’t really buy things off the shelf. There are no GMOs (genetically modified organisms) or artificial flavorings, colorings, or sugars. It’s meant to make you feel good after you eat. We’ve also built a following amongst the vegetarian and vegan crowd. Our V8 Vegan burger was voted the Best Vegan Burger in Indianapolis (Indianapolis Monthly, 2017). Our sweet potato, called kumara, is a type you can’t get from America. It’s from New Zealand, and we have a farmer who grows them for us. We also have a popular side called Motobites. These are our own recipe - little crumbed balls of chick peas, carrots, pumpkin and ginger. They are something you can’t get anywhere else and have proved popular amongst the locals!” “In terms of the most rewarding part of the murals is that it is adding to the community. The murals enhance a community in this era of social media (for example, Instagram), in knowing we’ve doing our part,” Cooney emphasized. “We kind of believe that in this day and age, you need to be more than just serving burgers. What makes us different is our culture. There are three pillars - Creative, Sweet (www.burgerfuel.com/nz/world-of-burgerfuel/creative-sweet) with artwork that features various murals in communities, Radio Burger Fuel (www.burgerfuel.com/nz/world-of-burgerfuel/radio-burgerfuel), a New Zealandbased music radio station broadcasts globally where they sponsor local music, events and artists through parties, and Speed Custom (www.burgerfuel.com/nz/ world-of-burgerfuel/speedandcustom) where classic American muscle cars are recognized. These three parts of our culture are what makes us different from everybody else. We serve different food, create these murals and sponsor music that no one else is doing,” Cooney noted. A native of Auckland on New Zealand’s north island, Cooney described his country, “I would say our culture is quite similar to western countries, but different in the food. We have quite an internationally-inspired food down there being close to Asia and South America. Our heritage is European. I think we have an extremely high caliber of food. I think it is the one thing I miss. The cultures are not too different from each other.” Schedule your next culinary pit stop at Burger Fuel to see their murals, try their burgers, cast a vote for a local charitable donation and ask Sam to share some stories about life down under.

College Ave Bridge Over Fall Creek Reopened

The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that favorable weather and an efficient construction schedule has allowed for the reopening of the College Avenue bridge over Fall Creek nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. Initially expected to open on November 17, the bridge was closed in mid-September for deck resurfacing and sidewalk repairs. Commuters traveling south via the newly opened bridge will also soon experience a newly resurfaced College Avenue, between Fall Creek Parkway North Drive and East 22nd Street. This segment of College Avenue is currently under construction, and motorists can expect to drive on milled or intermediate pavement until weather allows crews to complete the final resurfacing work. There will be no full closures of College Avenue associated with this resurfacing project, though work may require intermittent lane restrictions. The reopening of the College Avenue bridge over Fall Creek will provide an additional detour option for motorists during the continued closure of the Central Avenue bridge over Fall Creek. The Central Avenue bridge over Fall Creek will remain closed until Spring 2019 for complete reconstruction, including a new superstructure, deck and sidewalks. Both bridges first opened in 1905 and have required special attention in design and construction to maintain their historic look. The cost of repairs to both bridges is $7.6 million.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle I am thankful for you, dear Gazette readers. I hope you’re able to enjoy the neighborhood and all it has to offer over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Tiny Tonic Saturday, November 10 Second Helpings 1121 Southeastern Ave - all-ages, 10:30 - noon, free

While the Tonic Ball benefiting Second Helpings (where I work, in case you didn’t know) is sold out already, we’ve got room for the kiddos at Tiny Tonic. Scott Rudicel, the guy behind the musical fun of Ruditoonz, will be entertaining the children and their adult people with his special stylings of the music of the featured Tonic Ball acts. You can expect to hear songs from Pearl Jam, Elton John, Johnny Cash, Beyonce, and Abba. The event is free. Boxes of elbow macaroni and spaghetti noodles are always appreciated.

Many of the shops have trunk shows, giveaways, holiday previews, and sales. Participating businesses include: Safeway, Illinois Street Food Emporium, The Secret Ingredient, Eckert and Ross Fine Art, The Flying Cupcake, Byrnes Pizza, Petite G. Jewelers, Be the Boutique, Kincaid’s Meat Market, Starbucks, 21st Amendment, The Riviera Club, Charles Mayer & Co.

Random Ripplings City Dogs Grocery has closed the 6055 N. College Avenue location [JJ23 on map]. The Mass Ave store remains open. Long-time residents might remember this building as Claffey’s Grocery.

Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band Friday, November 23 The Vogue 6259 N. College Ave - 21+, doors at 8:00, show 9:00, $15

Seeing Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band play the day after Thanksgiving is a beloved holiday tradition. If you’re not familiar with the band, now is the perfect time to witness them in all of their home-state glory. Many of us have tried to describe the energy and sound produced by the trio - guitar, washboard, bucket - I don’t think any of us have nailed it yet. Barnburning blues, controlled frenzy, and finger-style playing sort of describe them. “Big Damn Fun,” is the best I can do. Josh and Breezy Peyton live in southern Indiana when they’re not on the road - and they’re on the road the majority of the year. They’re bringing Split Rail, a band from their neck of the woods, to open the show. I was lucky enough to play typewriter in an all-women jug band that the Peyton’s generously invited to play in the 2010 Vogue post-Thanksgiving show. What a great evening that was!

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. On August 8th, 1969, a young Dentist came to Broad Ripple and opened his practice at 6211 North College Ave. Over the years Dr. Robert D. Lucus would become a Broad Ripple icon. I have had the pleasure of being one of his many patients. “Dr. Bob”, as he is affectionately known by all, has decided that it is time to retire in the beginning of his 50th year here. I for one, as I’m sure one of many, will miss him and his smiling face. However, when I went to his office one last time to tell him goodbye, he said, and I quote, “I’ll still see you around, I just won’t have my fingers in your mouth.” Good luck Bob, my friend, enjoy traveling, drop us a post card from time to time. We’ll see you in the Village.

Poetic Thoughts

by C.W. Pruitt II

I have known about the closing of The Patio for some time now. I have wanted to write about it. But frankly, the words were not forthcoming. I get depressed when a business closes in Broad Ripple which fills a niche. Watching a 24-hour diner, a 24-hour pizza place, and several non-corporate coffee shops close has been painful. These closings, to me, have left a void in the cultural life of Broad Ripple. Now The Patio’s music has faded. I would not describe this as a void in the live music scene. This is a black hole - a vortex which truly sucks. So what to make of this sucking vortex of a black hole? I have friends who maintain that when good energy is gathered at one establishment and that place closes, the good energy goes to another place. I embraced this idealism, for awhile. Now I am re-considering this perspective. It seems to me that vacuums are created when creative ventures go away. It sucks, doesn’t it? But maybe there is hope when we put our energy and Love into helping the artists/entrepreneurs who hang their financial canvasses in Broad Ripple:

The music fades then disappears Losing coffee shops and bars But nightlife quickly reappears By hanging a few new stars

Regional Rail Corridor Preservation Meeting Scheduled

E

by B il l M

Rail advocates will gather November 19 to organize to preserve the 51-mile regional rail corridor (aka the Nickel Plate or State Fair tracks). Contact me for details or join Save the Nickel Plate on Facebook. At a meeting held by the City of Fishers on October 30, organizers protested the City’s plan to allow only trail use (not rail and trail use).

White River Planning Comments Sought

Did you know a study is underway to look at better use of the White River? The same firm that did the beleaguered Broad Ripple Park study (which recommended closing the outdoor pool in the Park despite protests) is now looking at better use of the White River. Three public forums were held recently (although none in Broad Ripple). I am hearing great things are coming. My friend Norma wants a pedestrian bridge over the White River to connect Holliday Park with Broad Ripple. Holliday Park is apparently looking at canoe or kayak rentals. How about a swimming beach? From the White River website: The White River Vision Plan is a joint effort between the City of Indianapolis and Hamilton County Tourism, Inc. in partnership with Visit Indy’s philanthropic arm, Tourism Tomorrow, Inc. to develop a comprehensive and coordinated regional, community-driven plan to enhance 58 miles of the White River in Marion and Hamilton counties. The goal of the vision plan is to create an accessible, recreational, and cultural environment that encourages a unique sense of place for the community as a whole. Visit their website, mywhiteriver.com for details.

Get out of the Ripple - Starved Rock State Park

Starved Rock State Park is a three-hour drive from Broad Ripple and is about an hour north of Bloomington, Illinois off I-39 at Ogelsby. The spectacular park features sandstone bluffs, rare plants, canyons, waterfalls, and more. Best of all is the historic lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. It is a gem and features a huge fireplace. It is perfect for an overnight stay and their historic lodge also has a great buffet including

Nov 9 - Nov 29, 2018

the best fried chicken ever. Featuring 18 canyons and 13 miles of hiking trails with ancient sandstone bluffs overlooking the Illinois River Valley, there is much to do any time of year. They also have 8 waterfalls, ice falls, and ice climbing. The area was settled by the French in the 1600s which explains the French flags. Did I mention wine tasting at the nearby wineries? Yes, Virginia, you are in Illinois. Are you up for amazing? Details at emjoylasallecounty.com, For lodge reservations call 815 667 4211.

Kiwanis Fund Raiser a Hit

The recent “Pints for Half Pints” fund raiser held recently was a benefit for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math education in midtown schools. The Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club sponsored the event for the seventh year in a row. Last year, funds went to such things as biology supplies for Shortridge High School and two sponsorships to enable choir students from Broad Ripple Magnet High School to perform at Carnegie Hall.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the right section of the middle row that contains 1-3-6-7. The 5 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces above and below the 6. The 5 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 6-1. The 5 in the center section eliminates the spaces on both side of the 3. The only place left is to the right of the 7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Wines to Fall For I recently enjoyed a brief but blissful fall break in Southern California. For a few days, I traded the golds, oranges, and reds of the Indiana fallscape for the browns, beiges, and grays of California. And the pinks of France, in WINE that is. California COSTCO stores carry a wide and affordable domestic and international selection. That included a three pack of dry style rose wines from the Cotes de Provence for just $19.99. Two of the three really pleased my palate, the Roquatelle and the La Sangliere. Both were blends of cinsault and grenache with delicious flavors of red fruit but the La Sangliere had much more body and mouth feel. If you find them locally, give them a try. If you’re looking to stock up on Indiana wine for the holidays put November 19th on your calendar. That is the day of Easley Winery’s Thanksgiving wine sale. 6 wines for $6. The downtown winery will offer a selection of dry and sweet style wines for $6 bucks a bottle. An easy way to savor and share local product for the holidays. www.easleywinery.com Jill A. The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

Hosting a Successful Cookie Swap I’ve been on a molasses kick lately. Which is great since cookie baking season is officially upon us. Ever hosted a cookie exchange? Here’s your guide to planning and hosting a fun gettogether that streamlines your baking this holiday season. For those unfamiliar with this longtime holiday tradition, a cookie-exchange has each guest make several dozen of just one kind of cookie, then invitees can sample and swap equal amounts of cookies with other guests. #winwin Be sure to offer a few weeks’ notice to guests since there is prep-work involved for them to attend. In your invitation, be sure to ask each person not only for an RSVP, but also have them let you know what they plan to bring so there aren’t duplicates: that’s no fun. The amount is up to you, but generally speaking, 5 dozen is a good number. Advise guests of the quantity they’ll need to bring and ask them to have printed copies of their recipe available. Once the big day arrives, have platters and baskets set out for guests to display their cookies. Also provide “name cards” for each cookie being offered. List the name of the baker and the name of the cookie. It’s also a good idea to note any common allergens, like nuts, on the name cards. Place copies of the recipe for each nearby the corresponding plate. Plenty of plastic bags, or aluminum foil, are a must so that swapped cookies can be repacked for travel. When asked for cookie travel tips, Diana Anzorena, owner and cookie artist of Pretty Sweet Confections by Di says, “When I prepare my cookies…I wait until the icing it completely dry (about 24 hours). I wrap them individually in cellophane bags and twist tie them. Then I choose a box or tin where they will fit without a lot of room to move around”. This is great advice if you are giving cookies as a gift. Pretty Sweet Confections by Di is on Facebook under that name & her custom cookies are un-rivaled, gorgeous creations. Go to her page for inspiration! Offer coffee, milk (obviously, right, since we’re talking about cookies?) and something festive like mulled cider or cocoa for your gathering. Definitely consider an additional small and SAVORY snack (think cheese or veggie plate) to cut through all that sugar. Each guest goes home with the same number of cookies they came with but will have an assortment to gift or enjoy. Best of all, you’ve made time to spend a fun few hours together. Here are my three favorite cookie recipes to jump-start your planning:

Grandmother’s Mexican Wedding Cakes 1 6 1 2 1 1

c softened butter T sugar t vanilla extract c sifted all-purpose flour ½-2 c finely chopped pecans OR walnuts c confectioner’s sugar

Heat oven to 325 degrees Cream butter VERY well then add sugar and cream again. Stir in vanilla extract, then flour and finally nuts. Roll into 1 ½ inch balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet (about 2 inches apart). Bake for 8-12 minutes until they are a delicate yellow color. While warm, roll in confectioner’s sugar and allow to cool before serving.

Grammy’s Sugar & Spice Cookies ¾ c shortening 1 c sugar 1 egg ¼ molasses 2 c flour 2 t baking soda ¼ t salt 1 t cinnamon ¾ t ground cloves ¾ t ground ginger 1 c confectioner’s sugar, for dusting
