IPS/Butler Lab School 55 By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Nicole Kent is Principal of IPS/Butler Lab School 55, located at 1349 East 54th Street. She recently discussed their unique learning environment and its objectives for students. “The Butler Lab School is a progressive school. We are Reggio-inspired, which means that we do a lot of inquiry-based learning. We have a project-based learning environment without textbooks. We listen to children’s questions and what they are curious about. We have a relationship with Butler University. Part of it is an on-site class for Butler students. We collaborate with Butler professors. We’re a place that is always learning. We try new things. Butler watches us and learns from us,” she explained. Ms. Kent described their curriculum. “We teach reading, writing, math, science and social studies. We follow the Indiana State Academic standards like any public school does. We try to integrate the curriculum, for example, with science there might be reading and research happening that occurs in the reading and writing time.” “The Reggio approach emphasizes the most important thing is the image of the child. This is the belief that we hold, that children are capable, competent and creative. We work hard to get to know the children and meet them where they are. That comes from the image of the child. Butler Lab School 55 We also believe that the environment is the third teacher, we believe kids 1349 East 54th Street learn not only from their teachers, but [OO26 on map] also their parents and the environment. schools.myips.org/butlerlabschool55 Children have access to materials, like having access to art to express themselves in a number of ways. The spaces are more home-like than classrooms. We don’t have desks and chairs, instead we have tables which promote collaboration and discussion. We have couches and pillows to make the rooms more comfortable. We don’t have store-bought posters. We instead hang up the words and work that come from the children. Letting kids feel comfortable and have ownership in their classrooms, in the way that the classroom is set up, and the environment is a different experience,” Ms. Kent noted. She mentioned their goals for this school year. “I think the emphasis on is building community. It’s new for the kids who are coming from other schools and we want to make kids and families feel welcome and love coming to school. We do family visits over the summer for those families who want them. We get to know the family and continue that throughout the year. When we have a strong community - that is when the deep learning is going to happen as well. I’m excited to offer the program to more families in IPS.” Thinking back to when she was a student, Ms. Kent said, “I was one of those

kids who loved school. I played school and taught my siblings things. I was always interested and never really looked back. I can think of great teachers. My mentors came from Butler University. I have a strong relationship with a lot of Butler staff and now working and collaborating with them is one my favorite things about being at the Lab School.” Reflecting on the rewarding aspects of her educational career so far, she noted, “I taught at School 60 at the original lab school for four years and was assistant principal there for two years. I just love the kids and learn a lot from them. Those deep relationships that we build are really important to me. Seeing the students grow is the most important part.” IPS/Butler Lab School 55 Principal Nicole Kent and her staff are helping their students prepare today for tomorrow.

The first meeting for the Broad Ripple Walk of Fame was held at Flanner Buchanan, 1305 Broad Ripple Avenue [H10 on map], on December 4. The idea for a BRHS Walk of Fame came from the planning process for a new RiverWalk that will strengthen the connection between the Village and Broad Ripple Park. This is directly across the street from the Broad Ripple High School building. A group of business owners and community leaders formed a task force last year to get this project completed. The task force believes that recognizing the great alumni of Broad Ripple High School is an important step in getting the RiverWalk built. This is a chance for anyone connected to BRHS (grads, teachers, business owners, residents, etc.) to join the cause. For information on the Walk of Fame, contact Bruce Buchanan at (317) 475-4475. approved rate decrease will result in savings of approximately $62.7 million dollars for Indiana businesses. “The significant savings will help support Indiana businesses as they grow their companies,” said Indiana Department of Insurance Commissioner Stephen W. Robertson. Workers’ Compensation rates in Indiana have been on a downward trend for several years. This decrease in rates can be attributed to a drop in frequency of worker injuries. As was the case last year, the robust job market also plays a key role as payrolls increase and the economy grows, creating a larger base for collecting premiums. Workers’ compensation insurance covers medical costs associated with workplace injuries and provides wage replacement benefits to injured workers for lost work time.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle

Hello sugarplums! I hope you’re all having a merry and peaceful holiday season. I saw gobs of lovely music in 2018 and look forward to hearing more in the new year. Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy 2019.

Weihnachtskonzert (Christmas concert) Indianapolis Liederkranz Sunday, December 16 1417 E. Washington St. - all-ages, two shows: 2 and 5pm, $10 with special pricing for ages 12 and under

I drive by the Indianapolis Liederkranz building on the way to work (Second Helpings) every morning and wonder what delightful things happen in that building. I finally remembered to look it up and found some delightful sounding events. They have been holding a Christmas concert for years and added some features this year. The shows will include performances by the Bell Choir, the Brass Band, storytellers, small ensembles, the men’s choir and Damenchor. Light snacks, coffee and hot chocolate will be provided after the matinée performance. Drinks will also be available for purchase at the bar. They suggest purchasing tickets in advance via the website, indyliederkranz.org. You may also call 317-443-4341 to make reservations. Frohe Weihnachten!

Red Key Christmas Carol Sing-Along Monday, December 17 (6:30 - 9:00) Monday, December 24 (5:30 - 7:00) Red Key Tavern 5170 N. College Ave. - 21+, free

Toast the Christmas season with a good old-fashioned sing-along. Join members of the Settle family and the Red Key family around the piano where singing along is encouraged, although I’ll admit to being a champion lip sync-er. Note that on Christmas Eve the kitchen will be closed and the bar will close at 7:30.

www.redkeytavern.com

Holiday Sing-Along featuring Wendy Reed Wednesday, December 19 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave. - 21+, doors 5:00, show 7:00, $5 - 10

If you’ve never met Wendy Reed, you’re missing out on some fabulous music and a sleigh-full of fun. Wendy will lead the audience in holiday songs with a jazzy bent and a dash of bawdy. As of press time it looks like the main room tickets are sold out, but there are still tickets in the lounge side. Don’t worry, Wendy’s voice is big enough to reach back there.

New Year’s Eve

There are gobs of things to do in the Broad Ripple area this New Year’s Eve from early family friendly events to 21+ fun. Have fun whatever you do - I’ll see you next year! -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. There is something romantic about a book. The contents within may be enjoyable or enlightening. The book itself seems to take on a life of its own as it is passed from person to person over generations. Here is a little romantic poem:

The bookmark juts from the top of Emerson Essays. The hard back is well-worn and the cover is faded with the passing of time and usage over the last century or so. I open to a page that countless others have read over the last century or so. As I contemplate the words of Emerson my heart soars to transcendental heights as countless other Souls have soared from reading this book for the last century or so. C.W. Pruitt II October 28, 2005

Library Thinks It’s Costco I broke the story in February that the Glendale Library was looking for a new location with lots of parking and uncongested roads so everyone could drive there. Chief Librarian Jackie Nytes panned the Village—the roads were already too congested to handle a branch library. Take over the old BR High School? Too much of a hassle since it was so big it would have to be leased to others. Why not a walkable Village location? Do you really have to have everyone driving in their car to go to the local library. The entire vision needs a reboot,. When I moved here the library was in Broad Ripple Park where the Community Center now stands. I rode my bike there. The Glendale Mall branch should be moved back to the Village. Save The Broad Ripple Pool After months of community input meetings, I happened to ask IndyParks landscape consultants what happened to the outdoor pool. It was in none of their final three scenarios for the Park. Really? So we started Friends of the Broad Ripple Pool, alerted the local media, and circulated a petition at the pool to keep the outdoor pool open. Yes, an indoor pool would be nice, but let’s have both. Further, using park land for a Community Health clinic is a bad idea, even if they would build a gym or a pool. The whole process was frustrating to say the least. We gathered 526 signatures and presented them to the Mayor and the Department of Metropolitan Development. While they approved the IndyParks plan, they told IndyParks to come back before closing the pool. Save The Regional Rail Corridor I also stumbled onto another story. DPW was letting Fishers tell Federal officials to allow abandonment of the Nickel Plate / State Fair train regional corridor without

Dec 14 - Jan 3, 2019

any public input. We believe joint trail / transit use would be better. The tracks run from 10th Street downtown all the way to Noblesville. Let’s not let Fishers dictate regional transit policy. The Surface Transportation Board has yet to approve the flawed and selfish Fishers request. Join Save the Nickel Plate on Facebook. And thank you Mr. Vonnegut for suing DPW for not holding hearings on the issue. Lots Of Road Improvements, New Sidewalks, And New Apartments 2018 saw lots of changes including the opening of many new apartments, road improvements, new sidewalks, and other improvements in the Village to make our community more than just a bar crowd hangout. Broad Ripple Avenue now has a co-working space run by the Episcopal church, a fitness business, and an arcade bar. Now if the old steak house could only find a tenant. BRHS Future And New Location For The Farmers Market We are still waiting to hear what will happen to the Broad Ripple High School site and where the Farmers Market will end up. I personally think the property should be used for something other than a charter school (or maybe a charter school and Library). How about moving the Farmers Market to the Broad Ripple Park parking lot? Good Bye Weaver’s Sadly Weaver’s Nursery closed. They apparently leased most of the area to the east used for parking. I miss Grandma Weaver who sometimes acted as cashier. We will miss them. That’s it for 2018. Happy Holidays and now for some fun... Get Out Of The Ripple—Valley Of The Sun Beckons I recently spent a long weekend in Phoenix. The new Valley Metro Light rail took me to my downtown hotel, the Residence Inn. I also used it with a connecting bus to get to the fabulous Denver Botanical Garden where you can learn about the plants of the desert. They also have a holiday night light show. Close by is the Zoo. The downtown core is very walkable with lots of shops and restaurants—and even an ice skating rink. I paid $400 on Southwest which never charges a bag or seat fee (and you can change your ticket for free). You can’t beat a long weekend there. I only used Lyft once taking the light rail and bus to all the attractions including the airport. (Did you know Amtrak runs right by the tracks at our airport?) Happy New Year to all! Bill Malcolm also writes for ALL ABOARD INDIANA (www.indianahighspeedrail.org). He also has a syndicated value travel column which appears in publications in Florida, Illinois, and other states. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn a different technique. Look at the left-most column on the medium puzzle, containing 1-2-3-6. There are enough 8s in the puzzle to help us place one here. The 8 in the lower left section eliminates the two spaces above the 6. The 8 in the very center of the puzzle eliminates the space above the 3. The 8 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space above the 2. This only leaves the spot directly below the 1 for the 8 in this column. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Historic Ad

This ad for Alpha Cafe ran back in 1931. The cafe was at 813 East 63rd Street, today this is Broad Ripple Avenue. Although the ad lists the address as 813, the addresses appear to have changed over the years. A reader sent in a photo of the cafe and his grandfather Waldo Remy, the owner, and the cafe was in the space now occupied by Youmi’s Crepes & Bubble Tea, 823 Broad Ripple Avenue [H4 on map]. There is a lot going on in this ad! In addition to clean food, they sold radios and paint. And, no cheap materials at Alpha Cafe!

Don’t let the winter chill keep you from enjoying a chilled wine. Dry roses can be enjoyed year round. The shimmery shades of ruby, coral, and pink brighten up our glass and our mood as the landscape dulls down to beige, gray, and white. Rose is a style of wine, so you can find bottles in all levels of sweetness and dryness. Sweeter styles make good party aperitifs and dry styles pair well with food. The Glazebrook Winery in New Zealand makes a robust, rich yet bright, dry style rose. Aromas and flavors of currant, black raspberry, and a crisp mineral finish make this rose one you can serve with main dish fare like burgers, tacos and pizza. The 2017 Reserve MontRedon from the Cotes du Rhone region of France is equally dry and refreshing. Elegant and full bodied in style, try it with assorted cheeses, sushi, and vegetarian fare. A fun stocking stuffer is a can of Dark Horse Rose. It’s crisp, and dry with flavors of ripe black cherry. Each can holds two servings making it a smart share with Santa if you need to get your name off the naughty list and onto the nice.

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

Holiday Cheer(s)! One of my earliest holiday memories is learning to make eggnog with my Maternal Grandmother. She lived in Shelbyville, Indiana and drove up to spend Christmas with my family in our home near Broad Ripple. It was 1979 and I was 5 years old. My Grandmother brought with her an old cookbook, which had been my mother’s: The Better Homes & Gardens Junior Cookbook. We used the recipe in that book and made a delicious, frothy nog that wedged pleasantly in my mind. The recipe that follows is loosely based on that recipe that I made a million times. It has been updated with more, ahem, “grown-up” flavors.

Old-Fashioned Eggnog a dozen eggs 12 T white sugar 1 pint whipping cream 1 t vanilla extract 4 cinnamon sticks Freshly ground nutmeg 12 T Bourbon Separate egg yolks and egg whites into two bowls. Beat egg yolks together. Slowly, stir bourbon into the egg yolks, stirring to combine after each addition. The gradual mixing in of the alcohol thickens the nog, so don’t hurry. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually begin to add sugar, then increase speed to high until egg whites are stiff. Fold one-fourth of the egg whites into the bourbon-egg mixture until incorporated. Then fold in half of the remaining egg whites, and then fold in the rest, gently. The goal is to incorporate the whites so that the nog becomes thick and fluffy, but is well blended. Beat the cream until peaks for, being careful not to over-beat. Divide the egg nog among for glasses grate a little fresh nutmeg over the top of each and garnish all four with a cinnamon stick. *Gotta offer this advice: Use caution when consuming raw or undercooked eggs to reduce the risk of salmonella.* When you are entertaining this holiday season, give this golden oldie a whirl. You’ll be shocked at how delicious it is and what a festive cocktail it makes at your holiday party. Of course, you can omit the bourbon for a “virgin” version. Cheers! IMMHG staff shown are (left to right) Walt Sherman, Commander; Dick Braun, Senior Trustee; Wes Anderson, Deputy Commander; and Ron Montague, Adjutant. The check -given at the Community Life Center as part of IMMHG’s Annual Gala -- resulted from Flanner Buchanan’s recent “Day of Giving” event that raised $15,000 to purchase new honor guard uniforms.
