Random Ripplings Canal update to the Gazette Canal History Series The downtown portion of the canal has been drained again for cleaning. The last cleaning was around 2007. The Gazette discovered several new inlets (and outlets) in the canal during the draining. In addition to the one reported in installment #19 under the Ohio Street bridge, there are openings to pipes south of the New York Street Bridge (see below) and in the Ohio Street basin. Gazette readers will remember that the downtown portion of the canal follows the original path of the Central Canal, but it is now more of a pool, fed by ground water from OneAmerica and the State Office Building.

Another water source found. Note OneAmerica to the east.

Left: Looking north from the New York Street bridge at the dry canal bed.

We have another winner of the Rene’s Bakery Mistakes Can Be Sweet contest. Ed Stattmann found a typo in The Broad Ripple Gazette. Ed will get a treat (up to $10 value) at Rene’s Bakery located at 6524 Cornell Avenue. You too can enter. Find a mistake in The Gazette and email it to us at contest@ broadripplegazette.com. Rules on page 7, lower left.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle

Happy New Year, darling folks. I hope everyone has gently eased into the new year rested and happy. Do anyone of you make resolutions? I have a theme each year. For 2019 I intended to “use what I’ve got.” Let’s see where that takes me. Part of using what I’ve got is taking advantage of all of the wonderful opportunities to be inspired by the beautiful music and art and such in our community. I’ll do my best to share those opportunities with you.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Letters From Readers Mike Keys sent in this memory of when three Broad Ripple High School pitchers who threw no-hitters in 1954. Their constant practice would contribute to a magical season for the Broad Ripple baseball team. Al Lindop was my next-door neighbor. He and teammate Bob Haymaker both made the varsity as sophomores. Every day they would practice fielding grounds, catching pop flies and picking off base runners. I was a six year old. I would chase the balls they missed. That rarely happened but sometimes they would intentionally miss so this little kid could feel like he was playing too. That night at supper I could tell my Dad I “played baseball” with the “big kids.” Nineteen fifty four was Al’s senior year. Three pitchers on the Rocket team threw no-hitters. Gene Harvey even pitched a “ perfect game,” with not even a walk against Noblesville batters. He went on to play for Butler. Al’s no hitter was against Manual and was the third one of the Broad Ripple season. Al got an athletic scholarship to Ohio State. His collegiate career included trips to Japan and Nova Scotia. His fraternity father was Heisman trophy winner Dick “Hopalong” Cassady. After two years he signed with the Yankees.

Poetic Thoughts

by C.W. Pruitt II

Love on Earth is THE mission. I Love Love. I am in Love with Love. I am great at Love (when it is easy). When Love becomes difficult I retreat into my fearful pathetic ego. There are those among us who Love despite all types of discomfort. They are catalysts for Love no matter where they are. These Saints are all around us. And we need to learn from them. An alarming increase in robberies in Indianapolis has spread to our fair village. The T-shirt shop, known as The Shop, was robbed twice in broad daylight by the same person. Happily, the police nabbed the suspect who parked his car in front of the store when the clerk got a good look at his license plate number. The Three Dog Bakery was also robbed (by the same person IMPD later captured. - Editor). The Broad Ripple Village Association put out an update right after the second shop robbery happened. Back in the day, criminals robbed banks, not dollar stores, dog biscuit bakeries, or T-shirt shops. What is going on? We need gun control and a reboot of our youth programs.

Bike Sharing Comes to the Ripple

The bike sharing program known in Indy as Pacers Bike Share, is coming to Broad Ripple. “We are very excited the Pacers Bike share is extending up to Broad Ripple, another mode of transportation is always welcomed,” said Joshua John of the Broad Ripple Village Association. While I like bike sharing, their pricing is challenging as the rate soars after 30 minutes so you always have to be looking for a station to swap bikes. Also, you need to remember to bring your own helmet. Up to four stations are planned in the Village according to BRVA Executive Director Colleen Fanning: •At the intersection of East Westfield Boulevard and North College Avenue •Along the Monon Trail at the Broad Ripple Canal. •Possibly one in Broad Ripple Park •Possibly one at the Indianapolis Art Center on East 67th Street

Monon Trail Closed – Bridge over Kessler finally gets repaired

For cyclists during the last year or so, the bridge over Kessler Avenue has been in disrepair. The trail is to be closed to repair that section through February 1. From IndyParks: “A north-side section of Indy Parks’ Monon Trail ….(is closed) for bridge repairs and maintenance. This project will result in closure from East 61st Street

to Northview Avenue. The Monon is estimated to re-open on Thursday, February 1st. This north-side project is located at the bridge over Kessler Boulevard East Drive and the Monon Trail intersection.

BRHS re-purposing in limbo, Farmers Market returns

No news on the re-use of the Broad Ripple High School no thanks to the inaction by IPS. The good news: the Farmers Market is returning to the High School parking lot for at least one more year.

Scotty’s Bankruptcy Spares Thr3e Wise Men location

Scotty’s Brewhouse which runs Thr3e Wise Men has filed for bankruptcy. Several restaurants are closing but not the one here in Broad Ripple known as Thr3e Wise Men. I love their beer and beer specials. We wish them well.

Art Center Awards Ceremony a Hit

On December 14, the Indianapolis Art Center awarded students for their work. Over 162 adults and 55 youth submitted entries. This kicked off the 81st Annual Student Show which continues on display at the Center. Over 400 linear feet of gallery space was used to showcase the event. In other Art Center news, the Pop Up classes have been renamed Make It / Take It. These two-hour classes are for those with less time to commit and include: January 18: Glass Snowman, January 20: Fused Glass Suncatchers, January 26: Sparks Fly-Welding, February 15: Date Night, March 23: Hoosier HeyDay. Finally, traditional winter classes start on January 14 at the Art Center. See the full list at indplsartcenter.org.

Get out of the Ripple—Travel

Did you see that Spirit Airlines is coming to IND? Before you book your ticket, read the reviews of them and Allegiant Airlines (another no frills airline that charges for everything a la carte) on YELP. (For Spirit, try the reviews in Detroit or Chicago.) I stick with Southwest with their upfront pricing – no hidden surprise gotcha charges like $200 or more to change a ticket, $120 extra to check two bags each way, $50 extra for your preferred seat, etc.

Upcoming

Think spring. Norma Wallman’s annual wildflower walk at Holliday Park is set for April 13 at Holliday Park. You can register now. And the skunk cabbage will be coming up shortly. Bill Malcolm also writes for ALL ABOARD INDIANA (www.indianahighspeedrail.org). He also has a syndicated value travel column which appears in publications in Florida, Illinois, and other states. These are volunteer activities. You can find him on the Monon on his bicycle. The opinions expressed are his own. All or parts of this column may appear in other publications. Clue: V equals X

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 1 in the center section containing 2-3-4-7. The 1 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces above and below the 2. The 1 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 4. The 1 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 3. The only place left is the center space of the section. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Season for Sparkling A few of my Warfleigh Wino neighbor friends and I gathered on Christmas night to share some conversation and wine. The atmosphere was casual and comfortable as was the wine in the glass. It was the Mionetto Prosecco DOC Treviso Brut. This Italian sparkling wine is part of the wineries Prestige collection. It’s elegant in style but offers up more flavor and flair than attitude. We found it to be mostly dry, with an appealing fruity flavor profile, tiny consistent bubbles and clean, silky finish. Mionetto makes a number of different styles of sparkling wine from dry to sweet and even produces a prosecco made from organic grapes. The wine tastes great on its own but also pairs well with nuts, cheeses, meats, and chocolates. ( And delightful conversations about movies, travel, and the ever changing Broad Ripple landscape.) Don’t let New Year’s Eve be the only night you indulge in something bubbly. Like good friends, sparkling wine should be something to appreciate and spend time with on a regular basis.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Try Something New in 19! Usher in the New Year with something different, something new, something fresh! It’s time to turn the page and accept a challenge of innovation, change, or experimentation. I like the question, “When was the last time you did something for the first time?” From our store to your backyard, try our hottest hobby of feeding the birds. But wait, you say you do feed the birds already. But do you feed them peanuts? Peanuts pieces are now a phenomenon! In the past few years, they’ve been surpassing seed and seed-mix sales most weeks. Why you may ask. If you want to attract an interesting mix of birds, peanuts are a great food. They are small pieces called “picks” that are usually nonhuman-grade seconds or leftovers from manufacturers. They are either swept up from the floor or discarded from a batch of product and can contain anything from a variety of nut pieces like cashews and almonds or even chocolate bits! Their price is very reasonable since they come to us in bulk, and then we serve them to you in jugs. There are two advantages of feeding peanut picks. First, they require a special mesh wire feeder so the birds can peck out a piece at a time. That means they stay at the feeder longer. Second, there is no mess left by any shells or spilled nuts. Your squirrels will oblige you and serve as clean up! COUPON: The best New Year’s enticement is I talked to Steve at Backyard Birds, and he said, “So people will try something new and experiment, he will give 15% off any peanut feeder the month of January.” Thanks Steve and Backyard Birds. So now what else can you do? Try a new activity, a new restaurant, a new class. Take a day trip. Start walking or going to the gym. Explore Broad Ripple Village (things do change): the Art Center for fantastic creative classes, The Vogue for great entertainment, and all the bars have drinks you have never tried before. Work in clay or glass, rent a kayak, buy a different kind of T-shirt, spoil your dog with a treat. Try Tai Chi, learning the Tango or change your hairdo. Indianapolis, and particularly Broad Ripple, has so many activities that can encourage you to try something different. My new activity is to return to oil painting. I shelved my talent for nearly thirty years and now I am back painting portraits of people’s dogs and cats to raise money for my service dog program I support, Canine Companions for Independence. I just retired from the work world and did not skip a beat keeping busy. I will show my work at Graeter’s Ice Cream at 56th and Illinois the whole month of January. I invite you to come to Graeter’s for your place for ice cream and enjoy my first solo public art exhibit in 2019. I hope one of your Broad Ripple Rainbow Bridge by Brandt Carter New Year’s resolutions was to stretch and try something new. A report on the news the morning I am composing my column is that older people who go to at least one event (musical, cultural, or movie) a month in their community stave off depression. So trying something for the first time is good for your health, too. And, if you enjoy your experience, invite someone else along the next time. Happy 2019. It’s amazing to believe next year will be 2020. It seemed so far away!
