Macy’s officially announced that the Glendale store will close. This store started out as L.S. Ayres, part of the May Company and later Associated Dry Goods. I remember in the 1970s reports that the Glendale store was the highest grossing store per square foot in the chain. The Gazette has heard that an education use may be coming for this building.

Land Use update prior to January BRVA meeting Many readers have been following the proposed development encompassing the south half of the block bounded by Carrollton Avenue to the east, College Avenue to the west, Broad Ripple Avenue to the north, and 62nd Street to the south. The Gazette reported on two appearances by the petitioners. Before the third appearance before the BRVA Land Use committee occurred, the petitioners withdrew the proposal.

Mo McReynolds is the Mayor’s Office Advocate for Washington and Lawrence Township with the City of Indianapolis. She recently discussed her civic background and her work. “I worked in non-profits for a long time, including most recently at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, currently Newfields, for about four years. In that role, I was working in the Community Engagement and Outreach area and learned that I really liked it. There are 10 (Mayor’s Office Advocates) of us working in Marion County. I live in the northeast outer region and when I heard when that this position was opened, I was interested in living and working in the same area,” she explained. Ms. McReynolds described questions they assist residents with. “We hear everything form commonplace pothole and litter issues all the way to very complicated resident to resident complaints. We try to be a repository of information so that we can direct those residents to resources that will help them locate a solution for the issues they’re facing.” Her office hours vary around the Circle City. “I am at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center at 40th West 40th Street on Monday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. On Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., I’m at the Lawrence Library Branch (7898 N. Hague Road), which is just north of Lawrence North High School. Also, on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., I’m at the Nora Library Branch (8625 Guilford Avenue), just off 86th Street. I can also reached at my office number at (317) 327-5121.” She emphasized other initial steps in getting concerns addressed. “I think it always important to mention that the Mayor’s Action Center is the starting point for issues that we deal with. This letter and photo art comes from reader Larry Mitchell I’m always surprising myself as I parse the world into yet undefined or vaguely recognized visual beauty worthy of note. One morning, just like in a black and white science fiction movie, strangely life mimicking things called Bike appeared singularly and then in groups in Broad Ripple. They were soon followed by other lifeforms called Limes, early clues, I reasoned, to a rising chromo-mechanical revolution. We had been invaded and I think they are looking at me. Things from space. I don’t know if they will ever make up for the loss of Sigman’s Gallery or the old art collective, but their life mimicking posturing, so alone, yet, audaciously present, makes a day a little more interesting, albeit, eerie. Imagine, unliving creatures with the ability to entertain like a dog or cat’s hijinks in a still frame by falling over all the time. They just came one night and stayed. One hung out in front of a neighbor’s house across the street for a while. If I would have done that, the local gendarmes would have payed me a visit wondering about my odd behavior. Why are you standing there in one place so long without a kickstand? What color tribe are you from? The pinks? What did I think of the Limes? You are wearing plaid. How could I stand around in discordant plaids? Looking to clash, eh? A mechanical personality test. That’s all I need. Knowing me, I will ignore the scooters and the authorities. I will probably give up standing around so much and try to walk home without falling over on my side like they frequently do. I can already do that without a kickstand.

Butler University announces Spring 2019 Diversity Lecturers
Deshauna Barber, the first Miss USA to serve in the U.S. military, and Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first U.S. woman to compete in the Olympics in a hijab, will be the speakers in Butler University’s spring 2019 Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series. Barber’s talk will take place on February 11 at 7:00 PM. Muhammad will speak on March 25 at 7:00 PM. Both events will take place in the Atherton Union Reilly Room. Deshauna Barber - February 11, 7:00 PM - Reilly Room. In 2016, Deshauna Barber became the first Miss USA to serve in the United States military. She spent her yearlong reign as Miss USA partnering with and lending her voice to the organizations such as the USO, Smile Train, Best Buddies, Operation Homefront, and numerous others. Capt. Barber commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer in 2011 and has been serving her country ever since. She is now a logistics commander in the United States Army Reserve. Barber is a survivor of child sexual abuse and wants to inspire other survivors to fight through the fears of their past, and she also has overcome extreme bullying from a young age. After the recent loss of her mother to cancer, she wants to encourage people to focus on loving yourself and the people around you. Ibtihaj Muhammad - March 25, 7:00 PM - Reilly Room. Ibtihaj Muhammad made history at the 2016 Rio Olympics as the first U.S. woman to compete in the games in hijab, and she reached her goal of standing on the podium when she won bronze with the U.S. Women’s Saber Team. Ranked No. 7 in the world individually, Muhammad won gold with Team USA at the 2014 Senior World Championships and holds four bronze Senior World medals. As a Muslim youth, Muhammad’s parents were in search of a sport for her to play where she could be fully covered. Fencing provided a unique opportunity where Muhammad could fulfill her desire to participate in sport and adhere to the tenants of her faith to cover her body. She began fencing at age 13.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Happy snowy January. I was reminded last weekend of how lucky we are to live in a walk-able neighborhood. In a three block span the other night I was able listen to the live taping of a podcast, have a delicious meal at the Aristocrat, pop into LUNA music to say hello to friends, have sidewalk conversations with other folks, and have a cocktail at the Red Key. I love that a little snow doesn’t keep people in the house. Speaking of that, shoveling your sidewalk is a neighborly thing to do.

Two Japanese Forms Haiku is a short ancient Japanese poetry form that is traditionally about nature. Beatnik poet Jack Kerouac popularized the haiku form in America. Etheridge Knight (from Indianapolis) was awesome at haiku. As a poetic discipline, I wrote over 250 haikus from the Gospels in a six week period in 2002, Here is one of those haikus: In the wilderness Of human understanding Ego was beaten C.W. Pruitt II August 20, 2002 Notice that the haiku form is 5-7-5 in terms of beats per line. In 2003 I was talking to my poet/friend Richard Jones at CATH, Inc. He encouraged me to attempt a tanka. The tanka is an ancient Japanese form which begins with a 5-7-5 haiku. It ends with two 7 beat lines that are meant to shed light on the haiku above it.

Pool activists worry about fate of Broad Ripple Park Pool post 2019
On January 2, IndyParks presented the latest iteration of their plans for Broad Ripple Park to the Department of Metropolitan Development. They also outlined allowing an unspecified third party hospital to build an outpatient health clinic on park land in exchange for building IndyParks an “event center” (which would replace the current community activity center). Claiming “safety” concerns, IndyParks claimed the private-public partnership is used elsewhere. (However, the CityWay YMCA which was apparently built by a health clinic is on private (not parks) land.) The matter will again be formally

presented to DMD on January 16. In response to our questions, IndyParks provided the following background: • Is the BR Pool to be demolished per the recent DMD presentation? - The recent DMD presentation highlighted plans to transfer the park building (family center land) to DMD as we begin the Request for Proposals (RFP) process to secure proposals for potential partnerships. The presentation was not connected to the Broad Ripple Park pool, and it did not introduce any new concepts. We are still using the park’s master plan as a guide for future development. As a quick aside, the park’s pool will be open this summer (pending any unforeseen issues) and we are currently accepting applications for pool staff. • Is the aquatic experience referred to a splash park? an indoor pool? - Any reference to an “aquatic experience” would be a reference to the park’s master plan. If funding became available, the current pool would be repurposed with outdoor water features, an indoor year-round pool, and other aquatic options. • What are the next steps in the idea of turning over to Community Hospital land to build an event center and doctor’s office? - If you recall, the Broad Ripple Park Master Plan highlights several new components including a potential partnership that could result in a new family center and place for a partner to operate. The plan does not identify a specific partner and nothing has been approved or secured to do so. Although Community Hospital was the only respondent to last year’s Request for Information, the RFP will also be open to everyone. The next steps to evaluate a potential partnership involve releasing the RFP, which could occur sometime over the next few months. • What is the timetable? - At this point, we plan to release the RFP in January or February. • How can the public provide comments? - The public can submit comments to our Customer Service Center at 317.327.7275, or email IndyParksCS@indy.gov. As readers of this column have heard me say, the Broad Ripple Park outdoor pool is a community asset that makes our community more. The pool’s learn to swim program has

taught many residents how to swim – including many in the economically challenged community. The Park has had a pool for over 100 years. Using precious park land for a privately operated health clinic is a waste. Put the clinic in the old Broad Ripple High School or in one of the vacant storefronts in the Village. Join Save Broad Ripple Pool on Facebook and let city leaders including the Mayor, the head of IndyParks, and our City Councilor Colleen Fanning know you want the Broad Ripple outdoor pool kept open.
Feds Ok Fishers Plan To Tear Up Nickel Plate Tracks
The U.S. Surface Transportation Board recently approved the controversial plan of Fishers (supported by Indianapolis and Noblesville) to tear out the regional rail corridor train tracks which run from 10th Street in downtown Indianapolis to beyond Noblesville. Transit activists were heartened by part of the order that left open re-visiting joint rail-trail use in the future. The objections of rail activist Mr. Vonnegut as well as City-County Councilor Jared Evans and State Senator Crider were also dismissed in the order. Interestingly, local media reports that while Fishers is pursuing development of the corridor for trail-only use, Noblesville is not. It is still unclear why Indianapolis and regional transit leaders (including our Mayor, City officials, the Indianapolis Chamber, and environmental groups) did not object, since the regional rail corridor (aka the State Fair Train tracks) could be used for commuter rail to relieve the congestion on I-69. Since when do we let one suburb dictate regional transit planning? A regional approach is needed including discussion of a joint rail and trail use.

From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH
About the photo above: Does this view look familiar? It wouldn’t unless you had been in Broad Ripple more than 40 years ago. The Aerial photo, taken sometime between 1913 and 1933, shows the bend in White River and south of it. The dirt road on the left, then called Marion Road, is now Compton Street. To the right of Compton is the school building constructed in 1913. This section of the Ripple building was torn down in 1967 and replaced by a modern addition. The building to the right of the 1913 building was the original school constructed in 1884. This structure housed the bell that is now located in the main office. South of these buildings is the Cottage. Around the river’s bend is Broad Ripple Park, then called White City. The roller coaster, ferris wheel, and other midway amusements attracted many visitors annually. Foreword Broad Ripple Park, a once great tourist attraction, interurban tracks running through Broad Ripple-these and many more fascinating facts can be read about in A History of Broad Ripple. This history began as a Lilly Scholarship project by Steve Savage, ‘65 Ripple grad. Steve spent approximately two years in research and wrote the first detailed manuscript. At the same time Steve began the project, the Junior Historical Society and the Riparian also began collecting historical data. In 1966, both organizations started the process of completing the history, yet this project was never finished. Then Marcia Sakowitz and Kris Wilcox took up the project the next year. During the 1967-68 school year, Marcia, along with Christie Hughes and Sandy Satinsky, corrected and completed the history and prepared it for publication. Serving as supervisors and consultants for the project were Mrs. Ruth Marie Griggs, director of publications, and J. Raymond Hall, Junior Historical Society sponsor.
Proof Positive This copy of a surveyor’s record made in 1878 shows definitely that Broad Ripple was originally located north of the canal and Wellington to the south of it.

I just spent a hectic but exhilarating week in Sonoma County as one of 60 judges taking part in the 2019 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. It’s a doozy of a competition with beautiful and unusual wines from both the US and the world. My 2 panel mates and I judged everything from mid-priced Cabernet Sauvignon to hybrids to bone dry riesling, just over 100 wines a day. Among the standouts we awarded “Best of Class” and Double Gold included 2 bone dry rieslings from Michigan (2017 Bowers Harbor Vineyard and 2017 Chateau Grand Traverse), The 2017 Castro Oaks, Sierra Foothills Syrah, the 2016 Francis Coppola Diamond Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2017 Alapay, Santa Barbara Cinsault, and the Prairie Berry Winery, South Dakota Catawba. We spit all day but at night are treated to local wines paired with sumptuous meals. Sonoma County is a foodie paradise when it comes to fresh and local. Dinner at The Trading Post in Cloverdale, California, was rustic, modern, family style sourced from all local ingredients. The roasted broccolini with shaved Parmesan and crispy porcini was my favorite of the shared dishes that night. Another evening we dined at the new Coyote Sonoma space in Healdsburg. It’s a former cidery set up like a craft brewery with a long 20-tap bar and plenty of space for indoor and outdoor events. That night we started with 7 stations of wine and food as “appetizers” then a gourmet buffet that included seared Salmon with brown butter and salt, and a hearty white bean casserole with thyme, fennel, garlic and greens. Cloverdale is a small town just north of Healdsburg and is charming as all get out. The competition takes place on the Citrus Fairgrounds located in the middle of the easily walkable town. Cloverdale has a thriving arts community and the public art pieces dotted across town are innovative, and unique. Cloverdale blends its local history with the future in both its food and art. Instead of tearing down and replacing all green space, it renovates, modernizes and lifts up what is there. What a concept! Every time I travel I find and experience things I wish Broad Ripple would grasp. In the meantime, find the wine winners on line and in local stores and bring a bit of balance from the rest of the world into your home.

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

Sunday Nights Growing up, Sunday meant carry-out from Hollyhock Hill. Fried chicken with all the fixin’s and a late afternoon meal with family. I’m not sure when we stopped doing that with regularity, but I imagine it had something to do with everyone’s schedules taking them in different directions. About a year ago, my family decided to resurrect Sunday dinners and it has been a wonderful thing. I thought I’d share this sort of intimate gathering with you, because I can’t think of entertaining that I enjoy more. Sundays now rotate between the homes of various family members. We take turns hosting. Dinner is at 6:30 and if you can come, you bring something. If you can’t make it, not a big deal but I’m finding that everyone largely enjoys it and has prioritized gathering. Sometimes we have a theme (This weekend is Greek. Opa!) but often it’s just tasty, down-home fare. Since there are about 10 regular attendees, I’ve been working on a delicious version of meatloaf in a double-batch quantity. I’m going to share the recipe with you. If you are entertaining, great! Make it as is. If not, you can freeze one of them to use later or simply cut the recipe in half. I’ve served it with both baked and mashed potatoes and a green salad. Leftovers make an excellent meatloaf sandwich. This version uses lean beef, lots of seasoning and doesn’t dry out. Let me know what you think and if it inspires you to gather with family and friends.
Elizabeth’s Maple-Glazed Meatloaf 2 pounds 90% lean ground beef 2 cups of dried, seasoned bread crumbs 1 white onion, diced 1 cup of milk 2 eggs ¼ cup ketchup 2 T Worcestershire salt 1 tsp salt 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp black pepper
For the Glaze: ½ cup ketchup 2 T apple cider vinegar ¼ cup maple syrup In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients for the meatloaf and mix very well to incorporate the bread crumbs and milk. This is a fairly “wet” mixture but won’t disappoint. Divide the mixture between two (lightly greased) loaf pans and shape the tops to resemble smooth loaves of bread. In another bowl, combine the ingredients for the glaze and whisk together to combine. Pour half of the glaze onto each of your meatloaves and use a basting brush to cover each with the mixture. Place both loaves on the center rack of a 350-degree oven. Bake for 55 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving. Sometimes the very best parties are the simplest. Enjoy.

Indy Hostel, 49th and Winthrop Avenue, lost a bathroom recently. A car coming north on Winthrop continued straight onto the property at the tee, hit the embankment, went airborne, flew over the deck and landed in the yard after taking out the bathroom on the northeast corner of the building. No one was killed, but there was someone in the bathroom at the time.
