Indiana Writers Center - 40 years By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com Indianapolis author Barbara Shoup recently discussed her affiliation with the Indiana Writers Center, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2019. “I started writing there. I had always wanted to write, but had no training. I was lucky to find the Writers Center when I finally got the courage to try. Founded by Jim Powell, it was originally part of the Free University in the late 1970’s, and later became a nonprofit organization. I took classes there with Jim, and that started me on my path,” she recalled. “Over the years, I taught at the IWC. I became a member of the Board of Directors in 1999. As many arts nonprofits, the organization struggled when the financial downturn occurred in 2008. When we realized we could no longer afford to pay a director, I offered to fill the position—at first on a volunteer basis and later at a reduced salary. We focused on our classes, adding new writers to our faculty, and expanded our mission to include outreach programs. From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH
Road Work
This photo, loaned by Mrs. John Robert Byers, shows a road crew of early Broad Ripple. With the aid of horses and machinery, the workmen cleared away trees and built roads throughout the heavily forested area. Later, the road builders charged tolls for the use of their roads so that they could earn money to continue with their work.
Broad Ripple Dam
Mrs. Byers also loaned this picture which shows the Broad Ripple dam as it looked in 1911, when the photo was taken. The dam, which can still be seen north of the Broad Ripple pumping station, was constructed in 1836 or 1837 as a part of the Internal Improvement Act. Also a part of the Internal Improvement Act was the construction of the Indianapolis link to the Central Canal. The project never saw its completion, however, because the Indiana State Treasury went bankrupt.
Ripple linked to city
Before the completion of the canal from Broad Ripple to Indianapolis in 1839, the only connection the Broad Ripple-Wellington settlers had with the Indiana capital was a single dirt road. This road, first called the “Range-Line”, was later named the Westfield Road, then Westfield Pike, and finally Westfield Boulevard. Travelers had to pay an approximate 10-cent toll to use the old Range-Line Road. In the early days, it was customary for men to gravel roads and then set up toll gates so that they might receive compensation for their work. Before the bridge at 64th Street was constructed, travelers entering the Broad Ripple area from the north had to ford White River. Large stones, about 40 feet from the east river bank served as gauges to indicate the water level. If the rocks

She still teaches, now at the Indiana Writers Center and International Art Workshop, in Assisi, Italy. “Teaching teaches me,” she said. “I get a lot of insight from teaching. Becoming privy to the inner lives of others makes me see how complex humanity really is. Teaching has also made me curious about the creative process. While I’m mainly a novelist, I sometimes write essays about how writing works. I just completed, A Commotion in Your Heart, a book of short essays about writing that will soon be ready to market.” The first celebratory event of the IWC’s 40th anniversary will be a book launch for Only Witness, a collection of stories by its founder, Jim Powell. This fundraiser for the IWC will be held on Friday, March 8 at Circle City Industrial Complex’s Gallery, located at 1125 Brookside Avenue, Suite E. The annual Gathering of Writers, also founded by Powell, will happen Saturday, March 9 at the Indiana State Library. The keynote speaker for the all-day event will be poet Ross Gay, winner of the Kingsley Tufts Award for Poetry and National Book Award Nominee. Breakout sessions in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction will be offered by other accomplished Indiana writers. Powell and a small group of like-minded writers met for the first time at Broad Ripple Tavern (now The Bungalow) in 1979, giving birth to what is now the Indiana Writers Center. The Center was housed on the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple from about 2000 through 2017. It is now at 1125 Brookside Parkway, Suite B25.

boom in Indiana, which eventually made it the “crossroads of America”. Enterprises, such as Earl’s canal service, failed when the locomotive proved the more profitable form of transportation, and the canal era came to an end. In 1851, were visible above the water, then the river was shallow enough to ford. However, the state finally sold the canal to private investors for less than $2,500. After this if the rocks were covered by water, the travelers knew that the river was too deep sale, the canal ownership changed many times. In 1869, the canal was sold for $200,000 to the Indianapolis Hydraulic Company, now the Indianapolis Water to cross. After fording the river at 64th Street, travelers approached the River Road at the Company. The Water Company still uses the canal as a main source of water for entrance to Broad Ripple. A toll was collected on the road to finance the building the Indianapolis area. of the bridge that was to be built across the river at 64th Street. In later years, the area residents cleared roads and named many of them after American patriots and heroes. Settlers in Broad Ripple named streets after Jacob Coil, the founder; Andrew Jackson; Ben Franklin; and Thomas Jefferson. Wellington residents named one street after John Hancock. January 27, 1836, the Indiana General Assembly enacted an “internal improvement” bill which called for the construction of an Indianapolis link to the Central Canal. The project, headed by John Burke, was started in either late 1836 or early 1837 with the building of the Broad Ripple feeder-dam across the ripples in White River just north of the settlements of Broad Ripple and Wellington. Burke hired mainly Irish workmen for the canal job and added to their pay jiggers of whiskey. Most of the canal route was covered by forests which had to be cleared by hand. It is estimated that one man died for every six feet of canal dug, principally from strain and fever. This canal, which separated Broad Ripple and Wellington, yet connected the two villages with Indianapolis, was only a small part of the Central Canal, which was to extend from the Wabash and Erie Canal at Peru, Indiana, through Indianapolis, and back to the Wabash and Erie at Worthington, Indiana. The entire canal project was a great undertaking, for when completed, it would have been 459 miles in length and, thus, the longest canal in the world. The canal appropriations became exhausted, however, and the canal was never completed. The funds for the Indianapolis portion of the canal, which amounted to approximately $1,600,000, ran out in 1839 when the Indiana state treasury was left bankrupt by the Internal Improvement Program. Only 8.79 miles of the canal had been completed by that time. When the Broad Ripple-Indianapolis portion of the canal was opened for business, an elaborately decorated, silver-colored packet boat, appropriately named the “Silver Bell”, offered the fastest travel in the state - eight miles an hour. A line of canal boats, pulled by mules on a tow path, was operated by Robert Earl. He advertised his canal service as such: Boat leaves Indianapolis at 10:00 in the morning and returns at six in the evening. Good order at all times will be preserved. Fare one dollar. Persons visiting Broad Ripple are assured that good entertainment will be found by those desiring eatables, etc. Earl also built a flat-bottom boat and, at Burke’s suggestion, christened it the “David Burr” in honor of the commissioner of the Wabash and Erie Canal. 8FIFTEEN, Indy’s premiere women’s clothing boutique, is celebrating 10 years in business on April 13. Owner and Indy native, Erin Welch, has seen a lot change since 2009, the first time she officially opened the doors of 8FIFTEEN in a little house on Ferguson Street. “When 8FIFTEEN opened in April 2009 on Ferguson, Broad Ripple and especially 65th Street wasn’t what it is now. Bobby Cooper and The Dailey Method were just opening at the same time and this area was all residential. The change that’s occurred with the Cake Bake Shop, Just Pop In!, Northside Social, and Public Greens has been really remarkable for Broad Ripple and I’d like to think we were the trendsetters for that.” Erin Welch 8FIFTEEN has brought designers like Raquel Allegra to Indianapolis and put them on the map in the Midwest, way before any department store invested. Erin found shredded tie-dyed tees in an LA boutique called Switch, she bought a stack of them from the owner who was friends with Raquel, brought them back to Indy and they sold out in one day. That was in 2009, now, Raquel Allegra is sold internationally and in every major department store. “My customers are what makes 8FIFTEEN special. I try to ensure that everyone coming in here, whether spending $20 or $2,000, gets treated the exact same and that’s what I’m most proud of when I walk through the door daily.” Erin Welch Over the last 10 years many local women-owned businesses, especially in Broad Ripple, have been extremely helpful to Erin and supported 8FIFTEEN. Friends of First Jazz Trio
First Congregational will present a concert on Saturday evening, February 16, at 7:00 p.m. The music will be light jazz and Brazilian featuring Sean Baker, keyboard and vocals; Julie Houston, flute and vocals; and Jesse Wittman, jazz string bassist. Purdue Polytechnic High School announced its second charter school will open in the summer of 2019 in Broad Ripple, solidifying its commitment to Indianapolis’ north side and expanding its unique educational model to more urban high school students. The STEM-focused innovative high school will occupy a 12,400-square-foot building at 1405 Broad Ripple Avenue, formerly home to the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF). Following minor renovations, the second location of Purdue Polytechnic High School will open in July with an inaugural class of up to 150 freshmen for the 2019-2020 school year. The building will be owned and operated by Indianapolis-based Keystone, and will serve as a temporary location for Purdue Polytechnic High School while a permanent facility in Broad Ripple is secured in partnership with Keystone. “We have worked diligently with the residents and community leaders in Broad Ripple to ensure students and families on the north side of Indianapolis have an accessible, high-quality educational option. We’re thrilled that we have found a centrally located building and can deliver our unique curriculum to more Marion County students,” said Purdue Polytechnic High Schools Head of Schools Scott Bess. “Purdue Polytechnic High School focuses on teaching students the skills and knowledge to succeed in a 21st Century economy through hands-on, STEM-focused curriculum and paves the way toward admission to a post-secondary institution.” Purdue Polytechnic High School opened its first Indianapolis charter school in 2017, and today has more than 250 freshman and sophomore students in its downtown Indianapolis location at the Circle Centre Mall. The school’s second location was approved by Indianapolis’ Charter School Board in June 2018 based on the success of its downtown campus, unique teaching model and demonstrated community support for an innovative school in Broad Ripple. Keeanna Warren will serve as the founding principal for the second location of Purdue Polytechnic High School. She previously worked with the Excel Center in the Meadows neighborhood since 2013 and was school director from February 2015 to July 2017. She began her career teaching fifth grade at the Andrew J. Brown Academy charter school and Washington Township’s Nora Elementary School. Purdue Polytechnic High School is a tuition-free public charter high school. Short documentary films about the White River to debut
Three new films about the White River—one of Indiana’s most important waterways—will be shown at a free launch party Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Indianapolis Arts Center. Through the films, viewers will meet volunteers, artists, activists, farmers, engineers, developers, residents and city officials as they explore and discover the river, discuss its status and future, and consider how Hoosiers interact with it. They’ll paddle downstream with Friends of the White River, tunnel under the capital city with Dig Indy, and soar overhead with the great blue herons of the region. The films, funded by Indiana Humanities, build on the award-winning Next Indiana Campfires program, which focused on the White River watershed and Hoosiers’ connections to it in 2018 and will continue to do so in 2019. To explore these connections further, Indiana Humanities selected Hoosier filmmakers to create three short films about the White River. The films are each between 11 and 15 minutes in length. Attendees can enjoy snacks and beers compliments of Upland Brewing. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Her vocals are just gorgeous, her songwriting is beautiful. The record waves a soft hand towards country, folk, and honky tonk. She’s a heart-breaker in a good way. - and she has earned her comparison to Emmylou Harris. The self-titled album is her second. It was funded in part by Fourth Sunday Music Co., an Indianapolis non-profit that provides free recording time and support to local talent. How great is that?

When e. e. cummings was an undergraduate at Harvard, he began working feverishly at breaking the rules of language in his poetry. This is not as easy as it sounds, for syntax is sewn into our fabric at a very early age. cummings was a great painter. So he began writing poetry as if it were a painting. After reading e. e.’s biography, i began trying 2 b-r-e-a-k rules and be / come more experimental. I am a very bad painter. But i wrote this poem between 3 and 4 A.M. while watching a PBS program on American artists. i will not dedicate this poem to cummings. (He would probably turn over in his grave.)

New Group Forms To Stop Park Land Grab, Asks Health Network Not To Relocate In Park

Parks are for people. There are better sites for health clinics than on precious Broad Ripple Park land. That is the focus of a campaign of the newly formed Broad Ripple Park Alliance (formerly the Friends of Broad Ripple Pool). The new group was formed to stop the plan by Indy Parks to allow a doctors office to relocate on park land in a plan would also require that bidder to build Indy Parks a new family center. As you may recall, on January 16, the City of Indianapolis’ Department of Metropolitan Development approved the proposal of Indy Parks (Resolution 2019R-006) to transfer some Broad Ripple park land. Broad Ripple Park no longer includes the land containing family center and surrounding parking lots all the way down to the White River. Instead it has been transferred back to the city for development. The outdoor pool—while not part of this proposal—is also threatened in the long term. The group sent a letter to the CEO of Community Health Network (the only bidder last year) asking them to not submit a bid on February 19 to Indy Parks. The group noted Indianapolis already suffers from a low amount of open space compared to other cities of similar size and the loss of green space for this type of private development was a poor idea. The Alliance is instead recommending that Indy Parks sell naming rights to raise funds for the pool, the Community Center, the tennis courts, the outdoor pavilion, and the trails instead of trying to raise funds by putting private facilities on precious park land. The group is sympathetic to the revenue needs of Broad Ripple Park and also urges the Holliday Park model be used instead where Friends of Holliday Park raised over $2 million for park renovations during a recent campaign that included private donations from individuals and corporations. To help stop the Broad Ripple Park land grab, tell Community Health Network and other potential bidders (IU Health, St. Vincent’s, etc.) that they are not wanted in Broad Ripple Park. (Community currently has a clinic on Broad Ripple Avenue in the Thre3e Wise Men strip mall.) Tell the Mayor and Indy Parks to not go through with this proposal, either in Broad Ripple Park or throughout other parks in the city. Tell them to return the land transfer back to Indy Parks. Selling off city assets like park land for non-park uses is poor public policy – especially given the plethora of available alternative sites on private non-park land throughout Broad Ripple, Glendale, Nora, and our entire city. Changes At Indy Go To Improve Transit Experience
When the Red Line bus rapid transit opens later this year, there will be even more changes to your transit ride experience. Your will be able to purchase tickets at the new stations which will show real time arrival information and include a shelter with free Wi-Fi. They will also have bike racks. Plus, you can pay with your new pre-loaded TAP card. You just tap the scanner on the bus instead of depositing a cash fare. You can also use mobile payments. Your $1.75 fare gets you a 2-hour transfer. (Currently Indy Go does not give out transfers.) A new fare capping system caps fares at $4 per day and $15.75 per week. Plus, they are adding new fare options including transfers and capping the daily fare paid. Some other changes may not be as popular. There will be 20% less parking along College Avenue and fewer places to make left turns. On College, left turns will be prohibited at intersections without signals from 38th to 63rd. The Red Line will feature new all electric buses. The route will run from 66th Street to downtown and then onto the University of Indianapolis. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 9 in the left section of the top row of the easy puzzle containing 2-5-6-7. The 9 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 2. The 9 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 7. The only place left is between the 6-5. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. What was in your glass during the Polar Vortex? My first thought when the temperatures plummeted was for a bold, rich red wine from a hot, arid wine region that I had visited. I knew the flavors would delight my palate, and the memories of time spent in a warmer part of the world would give me something to focus on while I shivered and shoveled snow. I love the wines of Argentina for their simple complexity and affordable price. I also LOVED the week I spent in the Mendoza region several years ago. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. The landscape is diverse with wild tangles of trees and plants scattered across wide open spaces that are punctuated by mountains. Malbec thrives in Argentina. It’s that bold rich black fruit forward wine grape that originated in France and was transported to Argentina by travelers centuries ago. Finca La Linda makes several styles including an Old Vine Malbec. It offers an inviting herbal nose, with rustic black fruit and spice on the palate. Talk about a toe warmer! I savored my sample then shared the bottle with two of my favorite Warfleigh Winos who happily reported the bottle was “good to the last drop”. Malbec tastes great with Indian fare, burgers, ribs and yes, negative wind chills. I’m hoping Punxatawny Phil’s prediction means I’ll be enjoying another bottle with friends soon, but this time sitting in sunshine on my deck and not snow in my driveway.

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

Party Trends for 2019 Every new year brings trends in fashion, design, food and music. Entertaining is no different. 2018 saw everything from ultra-violet décor, loads of copper everything, wonderland-themed weddings, geometric shapes in tablescapes, Lucite accents (the clear chair!), comfort food and let’s not forget the Über trendy “Hygge” style of laid back and cozy Danish entertaining. Whew! So what’s on the horizon for 2019? First up is certainly anything that is PANTONE color of the year: ”Living Coral”. We haven’t seen this beauty since the early nineties and it promises to be all over the hippest soirées, especially weddings. Graceful swans are in the spotlight too and may show up on cakes, invitations, showers and even kid parties. Other hotties will include “orb balloons” and we’re still seeing monochromatic color themes. Looking for party-ware? Since “sustainable” is the name of the game, real plates, glass and silverware is new again. That’s right, no more paper if we’re
all trying to reduce our carbon footprint. Pull out those lovelies hiding in your dining room and put them to use. And you thought you’d never end up using that wedding china! Domestic diva, Martha Stewart is sharing how-tos for an ecofriendly fiesta. I’m happy to report that vintage is still cool and the traditional Cocktail Party is back at the pinnacle of hip (was it ever really gone?) but make it current with do-it-yourself drink stations (Bourbon Bars and Tequila Tables) and “mock tails” (Shirley Temples!) Coffee and Cocoa with all the fixings work too. But the entertainment. Thank heavens the photo booth is on the way out and being replaced by more golden oldies: Tarot Card Readers, ventriloquists and caricaturists. Fun! Coordinate your music with a DJ playing all the Motown or wow the hipsters with bluegrass (Broad Ripple’s oldest show, “A Touch of Grass” plays house parties (pbainc@comcast.net). I see you, too, Polka Band! For the kiddos, add a play area to your event, with jumbo building blocks, bingo or Twister. For actual kid parties, Liz Bates (Bates Black Tie - Event Planning | lizbatesweddings@gmail.com) takes play to a new level in ’19. “ Although traditional parties for kids are always a hit, expect to see parents take more of a hands-on approach in the DIY area. This makes for a unique and fresh take on the modern day kids party which the entire family can enjoy.” In the warm months, the fam could pitch in to build a new dog house to welcome a new puppy (great birthday gift) or craft model cars which culminate in a race. The possibilities are endless. With so many fun, but not over-the-top party ideas in this new year, entertaining can be fun, unique and affordable. Be extra. Be EXTRAordinary. Cheers! On Feb. 1, the Butler Lab School IPS 55 held a Robotics Showcase. The K through 3rd graders at the school have been working since fall using the theme of Space Travel to the Moon. They presented their results at the event. Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is a long-time sponsor of programs such as this at the school.
