The Artistry Group - creativity on 52nd By Mario Morone

INDEX

Arie Gatewood and Damon Taziyah, co-owners and founders of The Artistry Group, are Indy natives and Herron School of Art graduates. Located at 652 East 52nd Street, The Artistry Group or TAG, is a creative agency with local, national and international clients. Managing Director Melvin Graham, also Indy raised, has been a marketing consultant and entrepreneur in the creative domain for years. Arie and Damon recently discussed their agency and creative background. “We initially started in 2015 on Mass Ave as a consignment shop for local creatives. We kind of tapped into all of our experiences at Herron School of Art. Our Mom also went to Herron. It’s always been a part of what we do. She migrated to Indianapolis from Mississippi, got a factory job at General Motors and lived in the Lockefield Gardens area. Our family later moved and we went to IPS # 70. I went to Broad Ripple High School and studied in their Art Magnet program before transferring to Franklin Central High School. It’s nice to come back to this area and contribute to it,” he mentioned. “Our Marketing Director, Alison Banks, is also the owner of Artistry Social, our event planning & “experience” service group. She grew up in the Tarkington Park area. I’m impressed with the amount of creatives coming out of Indy that are forging fashion, design and bringing creativity to the city,” Damon said. “I graduated in 2005 from Herron, where I met and my future wife. We actually got married at Herron. She completed her art and education degree there. I started working in Atlanta, where my clients were Home Depot and Vonage. There were a lot of entertainment acts we had, like Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun where we handled their digital accounts at Warner Digital The Artistry Group Music from 2005 to 2012. I eventually moved 652 E. 52nd Street [OO23] back to Indianapolis where I’m originally www.theartistrygroup.com from. Arie also completed her design degree at Herron and we merged companies with (844) 602-4778 our current manager, Mel Graham, who is the managing partner of Black Box Creative. After Arie graduated from Herron (School of Art), we decided on a family business and called it the Artistry Group,” Damon explained. Arie said, “I studied visual communications at Ivy Tech, and design before that. I was always good at art and taken back at the response I got from others. They would tell me it was ‘amazing.’ I was good at being creative and that is what sparked my interest. When I got my first computer, I got into digital design while going to Ivy Tech for visual communications and then transferred to the Herron School of Art where I graduated in 2015. My first experience was working at The Khemper Institute, where they believe in community empowering self-mastery, and also at KI New Media. Working at these companies simultaneously was my first experience in being a creative for hire. I also did work for Black Box that was founded as social entertainment company. Khmer Institute also helps young creatives utilize social entertainment. It was part of their Aquaponics Company. I was in their mentorship program in high school as well.” Creativity runs in Arie and Damon’s family. “My grandmother had a floral shop at 46th and Evanston called Peddle Wood. She is retired, but is still organizing floral designs for church events. When we were growing up, we would help her stitch flowers,” he recalled. “Our mother created her company’s logo and also graduated from Herron. She took a floral design course at night while she had a full time job at the GM plant at the time I was born. She stamped metal doors for GM and picked up an extra floral design class as a way to help pay her way through college. My Mom became a design and city planner for the City of Indianapolis. One of the projects she worked on was the expansion of White River Canal expanding west and the White River Park branding project. As kids, we went there on Saturdays on the 18th floor overlooking the city where we discovered Adobe Photoshop,” he recalled. As Arie and Damon drew on draft paper with pens and markers, they would get lost in the paper and designs they were creating, which would create the backdrop for their careers. Damon mentioned a mentor of his while growing up. “I.M. Hoype showed me how to program, develop and build an e-commerce site in high school. He is a co-founder of the Khemper Institute.” He has always had an entrepreneurial spirit and an affinity for technology. “When I was

From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH

Soon after families began settling the villages of Broad Ripple and Wellington, they saw the need for schools to educate their children. In 1843, Washington Township Graded School Number Five was built. Ferris Wakeland was the first teacher. In 1854, Washington Township Graded School Number Fourteen was built near what is now the corner of Broad Ripple and Evanston avenues. This one-room school was taught by Thomas Keeler of New York. In 1882, George Lancaster, trustee of Washington Township, approved a contract for a two-story school building to be erected “where White River makes a sharp right turn on the south bank and far enough away from the river to protect it from the floods.” The building is described as follows: .. of substantial brick with rubble limestone foundation, four rooms furnished in modern style and the best school outside of Indianapolis. The cost of the building, including out-buildings, furniture, etc. was about $7400. This graded or high school, as it is commonly termed, was built to accommodate the advanced pupils of the entire township and is, therefore, a township graded school. It is located in the geographical center of the township. This building, contracted by Mr. D. W. Heaton, was opened with Mr. Josiah Savin Puett as principal in 1884. Two years later Broad Ripple High School was established when the new trustee, Henry Hessong, sanctioned a twoyear high school course to be taught by Mr. Puett. The first course of study included algebra, geometry, physical geography, rhetoric (English), and physics. Seven pupils enrolled for that first seven months’ term. A three-year course was approved for Broad Ripple the following year with the addition of literature and general history to the curriculum. Principal J. S. Puett taught all of the subjects in the early curriculum. He was a dynamic leader who insisted that the new high school expand to meet the increasing needs of the pupils. Although a friendly person outside of school, in the classroom

See HISTORY pg. 4 a teenager, I had a t-shirt company called De/Man, when I was 15 years old at Franklin Central in the mid-1990s. I started using their technology mixing tapes for a local rapper and DJ on 38th and was inspired by Hip Hop music, like Pin and Pixel, a New Orleans outfit and DL Warfield, a designer who created outrageous album covers. My way to contribute to the culture is through design. Before that, when I was grade school, I would draw pictures of Ninja Turtles and Charlie Brown in addition to drawing caricatures.” Artistry Group offers clients Integrated Campaigns, Content, Brand Strategies, Design Studio, Digital Development. “Basically, we are a full service creative agency. We are about 10 strong and we work with creative freelancers from Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles. Some of our biggest clients are on the east coast, but we also have clients overseas, like Loacker (Italy). Locally, we have worked with many clients including Pop Weaver and Eskenazi Health. Most agencies farm out their creative work, but we follow our strategies in design and creativity. We are between a traditional ad agency and production studio,

which is located is the back of the shop with stage props and designs. We like to partner with other local creatives, venues and agencies including Helen Wells, Jay Goldz, The Speakeasy, Smash Social, Keondra Atwater, L Mondelez and the Neidhammer. We also do print and digital advertising including stop motion and live action content creation. In 2011, we worked with Black Box and helped Cummins Engine build their first mobile app. We tend to keep our heads down and remain productive,” Damon emphasized. Artistry Pictures is their full-length production division led by short film creator, Jeremy Wallace, aka #directedbyJace. “We are integrating Jace’s talent into TAG and expanding our footprint. We want to reach markets like Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles,” Damon noted. On February 15, TAG revealed one of their first internal projects with a viewing party for the Oh Yeah Yeah Yeah and I Admit videos. I Admit is a song written by local musician Diop that features up-and-coming artists Allison Victoria, Baby Ebony and Willis. The video was filmed at local spots including LUNA Music. This community-focused project took the efforts of Artistry Pictures, Artistry Social and Artistry Goods, a merchandise line created by Arie featured in the video. “It’s a lifestyle brand that I created. We express ourselves through various projects and gain from learning with our clients. TAG branded t-shirts are available for sale online. We are involved in marketing and merchandising. It’s a natural extension of our creative work. We don’t just rely on each other, but on our merits of creative means to it. With our credo of Culture Craft Code, with Culture, we ask, ‘Are we giving back to the culture back in a positive way? Are we doing our best work in bringing commence to the culture as craft?” Arie asked. Their location has a inventive history behind it. Arie and Damon attended some PrintText events (formerly located at 652 E. 52nd) and worked with them on some projects to keep that creative energy in this area. More information about is available at: www. theartistrygroup.com or by calling (844) 602-4778. Damon reflected on the rewards of his work, “I just turned 40 and noticed how my children, who range from 2 to 12 years, have an interest in creating things like I did in my youth in the middle of the Bible Belt in Indiana. We are trying to bring out these talents that go unnoticed and we want to empower them to be leaders for the next generation. I see that through my kids. My son is 12 and he’s editing software.” “I see so much growth in our team, which is inspiring. Teagan Vonderheit, a recent IUPUI graduate has really stepped up. She originally came on board as an intern and over the past year has transitioned into a major part of TAG. Currently she serves as our Client Services Director. Krystina Lott, the newest TAG member is growing into her own as Design and Content Producer. Another inspiration of mine is my favorite book, The Alchemist,” he added. Arie noted, “The most rewarding thing is balancing our work and dictating our own course and path.” Arie Gatewood, Damon Taziyah and their creative staff combine Craft Culture and Code at The Artistry Group at their Broad Ripple area location.

he was a “veritable tzar”. His simple method of discipline is described as follows: When one of the boys needed a ‘thrashing’ he politely asked the culprit to accompany him to a little cell, reserved for such purposes, on the second floor. The application had the desired effect because no boy ever made his second trip to the ‘dungeon’.

Ripple High School was commissioned by the Indiana State Department of Education. In 1896, the school burned, leaving only the walls intact. For the one-year period during which the school was being rebuilt, pupils attended classes in the Methodist Church at the corner of Guilford Avenue and 61st Street; the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (a brotherhood organization) Hall, now Lobraico’s Drug Store [2019: now Runners Forum]; and a one-and-a-half-story building just south of the Broad Ripple dam. In addition to reconstructing the original rooms, an assembly room and four additional rooms were built. With the construction of a new addition to the school in 1913, the reconstructed building of 1896 became known as East Hall.

In 1889, Thomas Smith succeeded Puett. During his principalship, until 1893, when he was succeeded by Chas. Martin, the enrollment of the school increased to 40 pupils. Mr. Martin inaugurated the four-year high school course. Also during his principalship, Broad Ripple was recognized as one of the outstanding rural schools in the nation at the Chicago World’s Fair Columbian Exposition. Edward Harris became the principal in 1895, the same year in which Broad

Indpls. Art Center to partner with Vonnegut Library, Indiana Historical Society, and Indpls. Library to Celebrate Hoosier History

This March 23, the Indianapolis Art Center and local partners are spotlighting Hoosier culture with a festival meant to explore creative projects related to Indiana history. Taking place on the Art Center’s grounds at 820 E 67th St, this celebration will include the organization’s signature Make It Take It workshops where students will create various “Indiana themed” artistic wares. Partner organizations plan to offer lectures and activities revolving around their business’ specialties. Art Center Make It Take It classes have limited availability and require registration, and will take place in its studios from 11am–1pm, with free activities for the public taking place throughout the day until 3pm. Classes range between $35-$65 per individual. Make It Take Its include a variety of mediums ranging from Indiana Landscape Paintings, Corn Cob Earrings jewelry making, producing Robert Indiana prints, chopping Indiana-shaped cutting boards, and more. Partner activities include a lecture by the Kurt Vonnegut Library and Museum’s Chris Lafave discussing Kurt Vonnegut’s legacy and artistic pursuits, librarians offering storytelling and games from the Indianapolis Public Library, and interactive activities and history by the Indiana Historical Society. “I’m most excited about having the Vonnegut library here to talk about Kurt’s work, and to show his prints we have that haven’t been seen by the public in a really long time,” says Alyson Walbridge, the Indianapolis Art Center’s Special Programs Manager and organizer of Hoosier Heyday. “It’s also special because the Vonnegut library doesn’t have an office right now so we’re giving them an opportunity to get some face time with the public.”

Holcomb, McCormick, and Mitchell Encourage Students to Apply to Governor’s STEM Team

Gov. Eric. J. Holcomb, Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jennifer McCormick and Treasurer of State Kelly Mitchell invite Hoosier students to apply for the 2019 Governor’s STEM Team (#GovSTEMteam). Gov. Holcomb developed the competition in 2017 to highlight Indiana’s elite high school students for their work in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The program honors four outstanding high school students for their exemplary performance in one of the STEM subjects. Winning students each receive a $1,000 college scholarship from Indiana’s College Choice 529 Direct Savings plan, administered by Treasurer Mitchell, and letterman jackets identifying them as members of the Governor’s STEM Team. The submission period for the competition opens today, and applications and nominations may be submitted online at the following link: https://secure.in.gov/apps/govstemawards/. The deadline for nominations is 11:59 p.m. ET on March 31. “Engaging students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics prepares them for life beyond high school,” said Dr. McCormick. “I am excited for the submissions we will receive and look forward to recognizing our students’ creativity and passion for STEM.” “It is a joy to team up with the Governor’s office to celebrate the achievements of so many talented Hoosier students,” said Treasurer Mitchell. “We are honored to be able to award them with a CollegeChoice529 scholarship.”

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

As I was typing this, I realized that this will be the first Old 97’s show at The Vogue that I’ve missed since 2004. You should go in my place. The alt-country band, fronted by Rhett Miller, has been playing together since 1996. The same four guys, the whole time - that’s got to be some sort of record. Does anyone want to cover my Red Key shift? At least pop in on your way home and tell me how good the show was.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The Gazette thanks Bill Malcolm for six years of covering the goings on in the Ripple. Due to our limited space we have to switch things up from time to time. We know that many readers will miss his contributions to the Gazette. Over the past 15 years, the Gazette has had over 50 contributors like Bill volunteer their time for the Village. We think that Bill could end up in a real newspaper in the future, based on his in-depth coverage of news items for the Gazette.

The meetings are held at 6pm, at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard [KK28 on map]. There were two items on the agenda (in BOLD below). Case number 2019-UV2-004 Hearing Tuesday, March 12. 2019 at 1:00 p.m. This project is to open a law office in the house at 6173 College Avenue. There would be four employees. B. 804 East Laverock Road, Justin Kingen representing Metazoa Brewing Company for a rezoning and variance. For information only. This project is to raze the Get Organized! building on the canal to the east of The Coil and Fresh Thyme Farmers Market. A new two-story Metazoa tasting room would be built. Poetic Thoughts

by C.W. Pruitt II

Jesus Christ called God “Abba”, which many think means “Father” in Aramaic. I have spoken with several people over the years who have studied Aramaic. They have told me that “Abba” is the informal for “Father” in Aramaic, more accurately translated as “Daddy”. On a good day I have a running dialogue with God. I tell him what is in my mind and heart. My thoughts and words must sound like a child struggling with language to the One who masterminds the Universe. My Love is less that a drop in the ocean of His infinite loving Love. Our divine Daddy’s Love for His children in incomprehensible. How much pain does He feel when we stumble and fall? How much joy does He feel when words of Love tumble out of our mouths? Here is a haiku:

Hip Prayer __________ ________ ______

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 2 in the center section of the easy puzzle containing 1-3-5-9. The 2 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 1. The 2 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The only place left is between the 3-5. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

A wine flight is a collection of wines that have something in common, for example Chardonnay from different regions of the world, or Cabernet Sauvignon from the same vintner but from different years. It’s a fun way to see, smell and taste the importance of where a grape is grown and how it is produced from soil to vine to bottle. At the 2019 WFYI Winefest a few Fridays ago, I poured a flight of organic wines. Talk about terroir! It takes plenty of time, money and commitment to grow organic wine grapes. There are a number of practices that have to be approved to get an official label of certification, and those rules differ from country to country. In the US, vintners follow the guidelines set for food. (www.usda.gov) In France, the AB label, Agriculture Biologique (www.bioagricert.org) is just a few decades old, but organic and sustainable winemaking has been practiced for centuries. Winefest guests started their mini exploration of organic terroir with a Sauvignon Blanc from Bonterra Vineyards in California. The crisp dry white offers a soft note of grassiness in the nose then gives way to aromas and flavors of citrus fruits. The second sample was a dry rosé from the Languedoc region of France. The Domaine SainteEugenie Corbieres Rosé was a BIG hit with wine guests. The blend of cinsault, syrah and grenache offered up notes of raspberry, strawberry, and a clean, mineral finish. The flight ended with another winner from the Languedoc, Domaine Tour Boisee’s Syrah/Grenache blend. Bold, juicy aromas and flavors of blackberry, cherry and a hint of anise ends in a lush smooth finish. Can you taste a difference between organic and non organic wines? All three of these affordable bottles are available at Broad Ripple stores. And remember, no matter the terroir, a GOOD wine is one that you like and a BAD wine is one that you don’t.

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

Casseroles To-Go Sometimes we have to be gracious on-the-go. Not just picnics and potlucks, either. I often find myself taking food to friends who’ve had new babies and/or surgery. While these occasions are sometimes celebratory, sometimes they are just a good show of faith to a friend who needs help. I like to prepare something just as tasty for these times as I would for a party. I’ve got about a dozen tried and true recipes to turn to for such occasions. I’ll share my two favorites with you.

Serving Broad Ripple Since 1979 6520 Cornell Avenue

www.thebikeline.com

Easy Chicken Divan 2 packages frozen broccoli 3 breasts cooked chicken breast, sliced 2 cans condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted 1 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon curry powder 1 teaspoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed ½ cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded ½ cup bread crumbs, soft 1 tablespoon butter, melted to taste salt and pepper Preheat oven to 350. Partially cook broccoli (I like to pop it in the microwave to get the ice off) then pour off water and line a 9 by 13 casserole with it. Add salt and pepper, then layer the chicken over the broccoli. In a bowl, combine soup, mayonnaise, curry powder and lemon juice. Stir to mix well. Pour over the chicken and broccoli. Sprinkle the entire casserole evenly with cheese. In a second bowl, toss the bread crumbs with melted butter to coat and sprinkle these evenly over the cheese. Bake on the lowest rack of our oven (so your bread crumbs won’t burn) for 30 minutes! Pro Tip: Serve with a crisp salad & lemony vinaigrette dressing. This next one is my favorite casserole of all time. I prepare it every Christmas Eve and chuck it in the ‘fridge to be baked for Christmas morning. It is enormously versatile and especially seems to be enjoyed by men (maybe because it pairs so well with beer?). I give you, My Aunt Georgia Hamon’s:

Sausage Casserole one pound hot sausage, raw one pound mild sausage, raw two cans cream of chicken soup ½ cup milk 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped 1 jar pimientos, small 2 cups sharp cheddar, shredded 8 ounces noodles, uncooked Combine ALL ingredients in a large bowl and toss to combine. Pour into a 9 by 13 baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Hope these are winners in your book, too! Bon Appétit!

Random Ripplings 4922 and 4930 N. College Avenue were recently razed. These were the last remaining house on the College side of the block. In the past few years, other houses and the old Linder’s Ice Cream were also razed. In the pictures section of www.broadripplehistory.com you can find an ever-changing timeline of local area razings. There are many items in the queue waiting to be added to the list as I find time between publishing issues of the Gazette.
