From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH

IPS holds meeting about BRHS building By Alan Hague

The Lodge meeting rooms were situated on the second and third floors. The first floor and basement were used for commercial purposes and for many years served as a grocery and a bank, complete with a vault which still remains in the Hall today. [Today this is Brick House Dueling Pianos, Covideo, and Annex, at 6235 Guilford Avenue] In accordance with Mustard’s will, there was one room reserved for the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, of which Mrs. Mustard was a staunch supporter. The building, still known as Mustard Hall today, is now solely occupied by the Masons. Another social organization was the Old Settlers Club. Meeting for the purpose of having fun, the members participated in such activities as races and pig greasing contests. Dr. Ernest Johnson, an area physician, was the organization’s first president. The first Broad Ripple Band was organized in 1900 by Dr. Robert Light, a prominent Broad Ripple physician. The band, giving special concerts and playing for various occasions, provided entertainment for Broad Ripple and the surrounding areas.

There has been some confusion lately about the role of the Gazette. I feel is it worth restating it to our readers. I am not a journalist. I am an Electrical Engineer and a historian. My reason for starting the Broad Ripple Gazette was to bring history to people and hopefully get more history back. Gathering and publishing Broad Ripple history, in the paper and on www.broadripplehistory.org (and photographically on www. virtualbroadripple.com), helps to preserve where we came from. The Gazette also gives me a way to bring our readers the local, neighborhood happenings that other media can’t cover. We try to cover as much as we can, but being an all-volunteer, neighborhood paper, we don’t have the resources to do investigative reporting. Instead, it has always been my goal to simply cover the local news by explaining what is happening. No opinions added. We are independent from any group. When we interview those in charge of what is happening, we just use their words and let the reader decide. Sure, some interviewees have not been truthful with us in the past, but we have to start with the idea that this is not the norm. When we cover a meeting, we try to simply convey what was said, in case you couldn’t attend to hear for yourself. As we start our 16th year of publishing, I thank all of the loyal readers for picking us up every two weeks. - Alan

alan@broadripplegazette.com On March 26th, IPS held a public involvement meeting at the Indianapolis Art Center. The audience filled the Frank M. Basile Auditorium. Joe Gramelspacher ran the IPS portion of the meeting. He explained in detail the financial situation of the BRHS (Broad Ripple High School, 1115 Broad Ripple Avenue) building - Annual operating expense of $730,000, outstanding debt of $23 million, and deferred maintenance of $15 million. The IPS plan is to get the charter school $1 purchase law changed, then sell the property to a developer. The next portion of the meeting was run by Chicago-based SB Friedman Development Advisors. This was a detailed assessment of Broad Ripple Village, describing the potential in the market for retail, restaurant, office and housing growth. The findings presented showed that the Village should be able to support additional space in all of these categories. The next portion of the evening moved to the Ruth Lilly library. The room was filled with tables, each one with an IPS facilitator. About 8 attendees were at each table. The groups discussed what they would like to see on the BRHS site. IPS stated that there will be additional public forums for input on the redevelopment of the BRHS property.

March BRVA Land Use meeting By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com There was only one item on the agenda (in Bold below) at the March 26 public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee that was held at Northminster Presbyterian Church. A. Metazoa Brewing Company. 804 E. Laverock Rd., David Kingen regarding 2nd preliminary presentation of mixed use redevelopment project at 804 East Laverock Road. Rezone is to MU-2 Mixed use district with variances for setbacks and parking. Approximately 8,000 square feet. Petition #2019CMP809 This item before the committee was for information only, not for a vote. This item was also presented at the February meeting. Some modifications were made since the last presentation. The petitioner described several nearby parking opportunities, although no parking agreements with these locations had been initiated. It was also stated that the structures on the site, Portico, an outbuilding, and a garage, have been removed since the last meeting. Based on the committee’s request last month, the landscaping plan was modified to create more of a buffer between the dog-friendly outdoor patio area and the adjoining Canal Walk trail. The petitioner also explained that no food or children will be allowed in the facility. “Broad Ripple embraces dogs. We’re all about dogs on the inside, so, we’re not going to have food on the inside on purpose, so that we can have dogs on the inside,” said Dave Worthington of Metazoa. The committee expressed that while the additional plantings on the south edge of the property are an improvement, it would like a four-foot buffer between the patio area and the Canal Walk to separate the dogs at Metazoa and the users on the trail. The hearing before the Metropolitan Development Commission to rezone the property from MU-1 to MU-2 is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, at 1pm in the City-County Building downtown. The petitioner is expected to appear at the April BRVA committee meeting to get a vote before appearing at the hearing downtown. That public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23 at 6pm. The church is unavailable that evening so the meeting will be at the CCIF building at 1405 E. Broad Ripple Avenue.

Celebrating Its 49th Year, The Annual OneAmerica Broad Ripple Art Fair Brings New Activities, Artists, And Layout

On May 18 and 19, the OneAmerica Broad Ripple Art Fair will come home to a new series of activities and a fresh layout for a creative, activity-filled event entirely on the Indianapolis Art Center’s campus. This beautiful 9.5-acre park sits on 67th Street at the nexus of the Monon Trail and White River, and its facilities offer opportunities for intimate and inviting artist booths, unique art experiences, and increased accessibility for patrons. On 67th Street and adjacent lots, visitors will immediately be immersed in a street fair with artist booths, food trucks, and art demonstrations. In and around the Art Center’s building will be a variety of interactive activities for all ages, as well as chances to watch working artists create pieces across all types of mediums—from painting to glassblowing to wheelthrowing and even metalsmithing. Two stages will come alive to showcase a diverse set of musical acts and performing arts. Artist booths and related activities will span the grounds toward the White River and ArtsPark, inviting guests to enjoy the confluence of art, beauty, and nature. With new growth in and around the Broad Ripple community, the Indianapolis Art Center and OneAmerica organizers hope to realize new ways to benefit our artists and visitors while pushing toward an exciting direction for future Art Fair experiences to come. The new street fair-like model will also lead to a more enjoyable event for all interested in visiting. Not only will it be more accessible to folks with wheelchairs, kids, and strollers, but it will offer a streamlined path that gives fair goers a chance to see everyone’s work without missing a beat. “The Art Center and Broad Ripple Art Fair were founded on the principles of supporting artists and increasing cultural literacy in the city,” says Kyle Herrington, the Art Center’s Director of Exhibitions and Events, and director of the fair itself. “Opportunities like this year’s layout improvements are chances to re-evaluate those goals and make sure we’re holding strong to our mission and patrons.” The mission of the OneAmerica Broad Ripple Art Fair is “one artist, one at a time,” and by reimagining the footprint of the fair to Art Center grounds, organizers bring home the mission and spirit of the weekend. As the largest annual fundraiser for the Indianapolis Art Center, the event promises to be an exciting weekend kick-off to the summer art season while serving artists and the greater Indianapolis community year-round. Tickets to the OneAmerica Broad Ripple Art Fair can be purchased at the Art Center or online at https://www.indplsartcenter.org/braf starting April 1, 2019. RSVP encouraged on our Facebook Event.

More treks offered along White River, northern Indiana lakes

Get ready for warmer weather and treks along Indiana’s waterways, with a generous sprinkling of literary readings. Indiana Humanities is bringing back its award-winning “Next Indiana Campfires” series for a fourth season. The treks, which pair literature with nature to help Hoosiers explore Indiana’s natural environment and spark conversations about conservation and stewardship, are funded in part by a grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. This year, Next Indiana Campfires will take Hoosiers to various spots within the White River watershed and along northern Indiana lakes to explore the state’s urban and rural landscapes A humanities scholar will serve as facilitator and lead attendees on a walk, pausing periodically to read aloud words from Hoosier and other environmental authors. Participants will then gather for food and drink around a campfire to discuss connections between nature, literature and place. Some of the Indianapolis events: Saturday, June 15: White River (Broad Ripple to Rocky Ripple)—Don a life vest and hop aboard a raft for this easy float through the Broad Ripple and Rocky Ripple neighborhoods in Indianapolis. Participants will start at the Indianapolis Art Center, make a stop at Holliday Park to discover the trails and nature that thrive right in the center of the city and conclude with lunch and discussion at Rocky Ripple Town Hall. Saturday, Aug. 17: White River, Downtown Indianapolis—Float on rafts through the heart of Indianapolis, considering how the industrial and residential history of Indianapolis has impacted the health of the White River and what factors will most shape its future. Participants will start at Newfields and end at the former GM stamping plant. Sunday, Oct. 27: Camp Dellwood (Indianapolis)—End the weekend with a crisp autumn walk and campfire at this hidden gem right in the heart of Indianapolis. As a special Girl Scouts-themed bonus, everyone who attends this trek will earn a Next Indiana Campfires badge. Each event costs $15-20 and includes food and an Upland Brewing beer (available to those 21 and over). Learn more at www.IndianaHumanities.org/Campfires. In 2017, Indiana Humanities was awarded the Schwartz Prize for best humanities program in the country for Next Indiana Campfires. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Mina Keohane - Tribute to Joni Mitchell Mingus Album Sunday, April 14 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave 21+, doors 5:00, show 7, $15 - Doors: 5pm / Show: 7pm

Buzzing Around

Mina Keohane is hard to describe. She’s a vocalist, composer, piano player, and all-around impressive person. She has gathered a group of equally-talented friends to celebrating Charles Mingus’ birth month by performing the music from Joni Mitchell’s “Mingus” album. His collaboration with Joni Mitchell was his final musical project before his death. The band: Mina Keohane (vocals), Charlie Ballantine (guitar), Steven Jones (piano), Jesse Wittman (electric bass), and Kenny Phelps (drums).

Lou Harry Gets Real Sunday, April 14 The Oxford Room above the Aristocrat Pub 5212 N. College Ave - all-ages, doors 4:30, show 6 - 8, $15

I’ve enjoyed every single one of the Lou Harry Gets Real podcast live tapings that I’ve been lucky enough to attend. Lou welcomes a mix of artists and folks who have an impact on the arts. This month he is hosting the former two-term mayor of Indianapolis, Greg Ballard. Musical guest is singer-songwriter Cam Melton and playing the role of Lou’s sidekick is improv comic Beth Perdue Outland. Come early enough for dinner and a cocktail (or iced tea if you’re off the hooch for Lent like me). You will find a “Lou Plate Special” and Lou’s signature drink, the “Hairy Lou” on the menu. Visit Lou’s website for tickets and more information.

The Last Drop Jug Band Saturday, April 20 Aristocrat Pub and Restaurant 5212 N. College Ave - all-ages, 9:00 - 11:00 pm, $5

I just love The Last Drop Jug Band. They play everything I think a jug band should; blues, hillbilly music, and jug band-y tunes. I think they describe themselves best: “With one foot in the mountains and the other in the big muddy river; playin’ Old-time Jug Band, Blues, and Hillbilly music with banjo, guitar, harmonica, and stand-up bass, & vocals all round.” The band is David Duvall (guitar, slide guitar, vocals), Jude Odell (banjo, tenor guitar, vocals), Greg Smith (stand-up bass, vocals), and Allen Stratyner (harmonica and stomp).

ACR Appliances - the story of a corner: part two By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com Background: In 2008 through 2019 I conducted a series of interviews with Don Albershardt. Don ran ACR Appliances at 5215 College Avenue from the 1960s into the 1990s His dad, Milton, started with a small radio shop on 52nd Street around 1927/28. I will try to tell the story of this store and also of the surrounding businesses at that corner in the coming installments. It is an interesting story.

In ACR part one, Milton Albershart and Dale Chastain, newly graduated from Tech High School in 1926, started AC Radio. The small radio sales and repair shop was in the retail center on the northwest corner of 52nd and College Avenue. This L-shaped, two-story, red brick building had been built around 1923. (According to the Polk city directories, there were no listings for any addresses at this corner before 1923.) As is still true today, this building had retail on the ground floors facing 52nd Street and College Avenue, and apartments above. It wasn’t long until the C in AC Radio, left. Don Albershardt explained, “My dad bought Dale out in a few years. Dale was more interested in cars...race cars. There was a race car driver known as Norm Houser who drove for Dale. Dale built a lot of Norm’s race cars. And he had a garage at 42nd and College. Right across from the Uptown Theater. There was a gap between the buildings that you could drive through and there was a garage back in there. That was Dale’s garage.” After Dale left, Milton kept the original store name - AC Radio. Milton can be seen in the above photo toiling in the radio service lab in 1927 with an assistant. The shelves are stocked with batteries, vacuum tubes, and spools of wire. There was a growing business of repairing the new-fangled radio sets and rebuilding the multiple batteries it took to keep them running. Around this time, Perdue C. Clark builds a two-story brick building at 5207 College Avenue (the Clark Building), just to the north of the Texaco Station that was built on the corner around 1925 (Habig’s today). Occupants of the Clark building are Doc Keever and also Perdue’s notions store. The Clark building will soon become part of this story.

Milton is now dating Frances Keaton. The 1930 Shortridge yearbook said of the senior, “Frances is one of our finest athletes and is on several teams. Her favorite subject is physics III. Imagine! Greatly interested in radios.” Clearly a reference to her boyfriend Milton. After graduation they were married. They lived above the shop in the Wil-Jo-Hen apartments (named for Wilhelmina, Joseph, and Henry Knue). Don recalls, “My mom used to talk about how he’d come home at night and his clothes were all eaten with battery acid. He used to rebuild batteries. He would take them apart, take the lead and melt it and pour into a plastic grid of some kind. His fingers were pitted and his clothes had holes in them from sulfuric acid.”

The staff of AC Radio in 1928. Milton is behind the counter. The employee on the right was probably obliterated by battery acid splashing onto the photo. The door next to Milton leads to the service lab in the other photo.

Technology does not like me. Any machine I get close to recoils in terror. And upon my touch it often refuses to work. Coffee makers are a prime example. I have gone through countless coffee makers over the years. My friends find it hilarious that my coffee makers will take several hours to make a pot before they finally go ka-put. It all started back in 1989 when I was a sophomore at Ball State. It was morning and I was typing a paper in the Bell Building. The paper was for my Sport Sociology class which met at 11:00 A.M. I was particularly proud of this paper. It was on Joe Louis’ military service. I had researched it thoroughly. And the great thing was that I was directly opposing some of the professor’s viewpoints from his Joe Louis lecture earlier in the semester, My old buddy Mart Ruusma and his girlfriend came into the computer room. (they were also in the Sport Soc. class) They wanted me to go to breakfast with them. I told them that I was almost finished typing. Then it happened. Mart’s girlfriend pulled a disk-shaped object from her backpack and said, “You can save it on this.” I protested vigorously. I think that my first thought was “There is no way that my whole paper can be jammed into that little disk.” I also was terrified of walking around with that thing, then sticking it into the computer machine to print it out later. I eventually conceded. She pushed the disk into the computer, did some typing, got it out, and we went to breakfast. When we went back to the computer room, we discovered that half of my paper as gone. My lack of faith in the disk was confirmed. So I typed furiously, then turned in my paper as the class ended. I was given a DVD machine this past Christmas. It works for everyone but me. Incidentally, my editor Alan Hague was on the ground floor of developing DVD for RCA. Perhaps he can come over and conduct a therapeutic intervention between me and the movie machine he helped to create. CW Pruitt II has been on the poetry scene in Broad Ripple for years. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn another, more complex, way to solve. Trying to place a 4 in the left section of the middle row on the easy puzzle. We can see that there are only 5 open spaces in the entire 9-square, middle tiny row of the puzzle, that contains 3-6 on the left end and 8-2 on the right end. We can eliminate a possible 4 in the three open spaces in the center section (that contains 7-3-6 and 2-8-4), since there is already a 4 in the section. The open space in the left section of the middle row is knocked out because of the 4 in the lower left section. This leaves only one place for the 4, directly to the left of the 8. This complicated technique can come in handy.

Bugs, Bottles and Broad Ripple Inspired Art Wine and insects? Yep. Last week I interviewed Chef Joseph Yoon. He owns YUMMY EATS in New York and most importantly is executive director of Brooklyn Bugs. He’s touring the U.S. visiting colleges talking about his passion for edible insects. Yoon doesn’t want to discourage consumption of beef or poultry but instead is asking everyone to give this other source of protein a try. 80% of the world eats bugs on a regular basis. Yoon is partnering with Purdue University’s Food Science Department as they create alternative protein sources from insects. Brooklyn Bugs has the data on the environmental, economic, and health benefits of edible insects. During his Purdue visit, guests sampled a variety of dishes made from farm-raised insects, including black ants on shrimp, and cricket-crusted fried chicken. His passion for what he calls a movement is infectious. So is the food. It’s tasty, easy to fix, with more products available on-line and in stores. Made me think about wines to pair with the foods. Insects share a similar structure to shellfish so immediately I thought of wines that go well with those dishes. The Domaine Sainte-Eugenie Rose is a good choice. Its fresh, dry, with notes of cherry and a briny almost salty finish that would bring out the sweetness of the insect-enhanced dish. The wines are widely available. Check out Chef Yoon’s movement on line at www.brooklynbugs.com SAKS Third Floor Art: Broad Ripple resident and Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Bill Foley is one of three local artists showcasing their work this month on the third floor of SAKS Fifth Avenue department store at Keystone Crossing. Each month SAKS features the work of different local artists. It’s free to see as art is up the entire month on the third floor of the store. A “meet and greet” with artists, music, food and beverages takes place on the third Thursday from 6-8:30pm. Bill’s work includes one of a kind images and vintage photographs from his work in the Middle East along with new work showcasing the lovely White River in the Broad Ripple area.

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

EveryBUNNY loves Carrot Soufflé In the spirit of Easter, spring and all things “carrot”, I give you this old favorite! Perfect with lamb, ham, beef or salmon. Versatile and gorgeous on a plate. So the thing about carrot soufflé is that it can pretend to be a healthy side dish (it isn’t) but it really tastes like dessert. It is beautiful, unique and addicting. It was originally served to me in 2000 by my then-husband’s aunt (Barb Morse, herself a great cook). When coming up with the first restaurant menu for my wine bar, we remembered how tasty it was and decided to add it. The rest is history. It became a signature item and was on the menu for 18 years. I can’t claim to have created this, nor can Aunt Barb. She found it in the Indianapolis Star as a featured recipe many moons ago. It’s been tweaked a bit over the years, but below is the version you’ve come to love. I hope you enjoy it. A great dish and a great memory.

Sweet Carrot Soufflé (serves 8)

4 pounds carrots 1 pound unsalted butter 12 eggs 2 cups sugar 1 cup flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Peel the carrots, trim off ends and cook in salted water until fork tender. (Time will vary depending on the size of your carrots.) Drain the carrots. Melt butter and pour into a blender along with eggs, butter, sugar, flour, baking powder and blend well. Add cooked carrots and blend again, until no lumps remain. It will look like an orange milkshake. Grease a 9 by 13 baking dish and pour mixture in. Batter will be very near the top. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 2-2.5 hours, OR until a toothpick comes out clean. Watch it carefully. It shouldn’t brown but will begin to pull away from the sides of the pan as it nears completion. Cut the soufflé into squares or triangles to serve. Pro Tip: This can be made, cooled and refrigerated until needed–up to three days in advance. Re-heats very well. Elizabeth Morse, owned the Corner Wine Bar in Broad Ripple for close to 20 years. She is a graduate of IU, Hoosier Chef, Food Writer, Wine Guru & Advanced Master Gardener who believes in supporting all things local. Check out her blog: www.schlepicurean.com.
