From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH
Trolleys aid travel The railway, interurban, and electric streetcar provided faster means of transportation to the horse and buggy town of Broad Ripple at the close of the 1800’s. In 1883, the Indianapolis, Delphi, and Chicago Railroad tracks were laid through Broad Ripple. The line was first completed to the Howlands Station at 34th Street and Martindale; by 1887, it was extended to the Union Station downtown. At that time the line became the Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville Railroad and later became the Monon Line, which discontinued passenger service in October, 1967. [NOTE: The Monon Line train station in now BRICS ice cream on 64th Street.] A train with four passenger cars ran through Broad Ripple to Chicago daily and three times on Sunday. Parlor cars and coaches were used during the day, while comfortably furnished Pullman compartments, sleeping compartments having beds which can also be changed into daytime seats, were used at night. The cars were heated by steam and were lighted by Pintch [ NOTE: Pintsch ] gas lamps, which used a carbide flame. In 1894, electrified streetcars were introduced to Broad Ripple. These first streetcars to Broad Ripple Village were hailed amid cheers, and the event was honored with three days of celebration. The line was organized by Dr. R. C. Light [ NOTE: Dr. Robert Light’s office in 1920 was about where Chase Bank is today. His residence in 1920 is listed as being at 6216 College Avenue ] and Mr. William Bosson as the Indianapolis and Broad Ripple Transit Company. The streetcars ran from 34th Street to 36th Street via Salem, then, down 36th Street to Pennsylvania Street and across 49th Street to Broad Ripple Avenue via College Avenue. In 1897, the name of the company was changed to the Broad Ripple Traction Company. This line became the nucleus of the Union Traction Company which

Trolleys aid travel was to become the largest interurban system in the world, having over four hundred miles of track. In 1904, the famed Liberty Bell, on an exhibition of the United States, passed through Broad Ripple, involving in its procession the use of six streetcars from the Broad Ripple System. By 1907, the Union Traction streetcars offered twenty minute service from downtown Indianapolis to Broad Ripple Park, where the turn-around loop was located. In the early 1900’s, a fire at Broad Ripple Park destroyed many of the older cars of the streetcar system. As a result, in 1909, new cars were purchased to replace the ruined ones. The fare was ten cents; in 1924, however, the cost was lowered to seven cents or four tokens for a quarter. A waiting station was built at the corner of Guilford and Broad Ripple avenues. [ ] When the street car was late, the station owners would stay until late at night to serve refreshments until all the travelers were gone. The station restaurant was known as “The Greasy Spoon.” The interurban, an electrified trolley running through Broad Ripple, was brought to the area around 1904. It ran on the same tracks that were used by the streetcar. A power feeder generator was located in the building which now houses the American Legion Post on College Avenue, just north of the canal. Electric rail service saw its last days in Broad Ripple in 1953, when it was replaced by bus service.

Prelim. Work Begins May 7 For Monon Trail Widening
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) today announced that drilling will begin along the Monon Trail starting Tuesday, May 7. Geotechnical borings at intervals along the trail are a preliminary requirement of a future construction project to improve and widen the entire length of the Monon Trail in Marion County. Expected to continue for up to 12 days, taking place only Monday through Friday, drilling work will not close any part of the trail. However, trail users should watch for construction equipment and give work crews plenty of room. The contractor plans to start work on the south end of the trail--near 10th Street--and continue northward. This work is in preparation for the construction of DPW project ST-25-099, which will widen and improve the Monon Trail during the 2020 construction season. The Monon Trail is a key link in the Indianapolis Greenways master plan, connecting many neighborhoods from Downtown Indianapolis to the northern county line. In coordination with Indy Parks and Recreation, DPW will manage the design and construction contracts for the widening and resurfacing of the Monon Trail, from 10th to 96th streets. The final trail design will call for the path to be 10-14 feet wide at various locations along the corridor with a 2-foot grass shoulder where practical and a 1:3 maximum slope off of either edge of the new pavement. The Monon Trail is a key link in the Indianapolis Greenways master plan, connecting many neighborhoods from Downtown to the northern county line.
Girls Inc. of Greater Indpls - New STEM Program for Girls In conjunction with sponsors Delta Faucet, Corteva Agriscience and D.J. Angus Scientech Foundation, Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis is excited to announce the launch of a new STEM program, Eureka!, within its portfolio of offerings. Eureka! is a year-round, five-year STEM intensive program that engages and empowers leadership and academic opportunities in STEM fields, starting with girls in eighth grade. In 2017, only 24% of women in the United States held jobs in STEM industries*. Eurkea! is seeking to combat this gender gap by diversifying and strengthening the leadership pipeline locally and nationally. The Eureka! program will begin on June 17, 2019 with a cohort of 25 rising 8th graders from around the city who will engage in hands-on STEM programming on the campus of IUPUI in the School of Informatics and Computing. The program will continue into the 2019-20 academic year with a robust calendar of workshops, field trips, and interactions with local, female STEM professionals. As girls progress through the five-year program and continue into high school, they will participate in internships, college courses for credit, and much more. With a strong emphasis on serving girls from under-served communities, Elyssa CampodonicoBarr, President & CEO states, “No matter what field a young girl may ultimately choose to pursue in her career, we are confident that Eureka! will provide a unique and life-changing opportunity for Girls Inc. girls.” The ultimate goal of Eureka!, as with other Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis programs, is to provide progressive education opportunities to empower girls to succeed so that they grow up to be healthy, educated, and independent. For more information or to inquire about participation in the Eureka! program, please visit www. girlsincindy.org. Registration opened on Feb. 18, 2019.

in their career or volunteer service to their communities. The award is named for past Pi Beta Phi Grand President Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg, who served as the Fraternity’s Grand President from 1985 – 1991. Pamela Hatfield Gemmer, Colorado Beta (awarded posthumously) Pam’s expertise and passion for bilingual literacy work was extensive. In addition to teaching Spanish and English as a Second Language for 42 years, Pam volunteered in various capacities for many community service organizations throughout her life. At the time of her death, she was involved with more than 10 organizations that she had either founded or to which she was making significant leadership contributions. Her work and advocacy were recognized by many, and she was named Champion in Diversity by the Indianapolis Mexican Consulate in 2017. At a memorial service, Pam’s impact on others was undeniable as many people delivered eulogies describing how she had personally helped them and/or positively influenced their careers. According to the Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club of Indianapolis, “Pam was always a most loyal, dependable volunteer year in and year out. She took on many leadership roles in education locally and nationally and in various immigrant welcome and Spanish language and culture organizations. It turns out that most of those activities were connected to literacy and bilingual literacy.”

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Kurt’s Karass: Dan Wakefield Documentary Film Premier Tuesday, May 21 Shortridge High School 3401 N Meridian St all-ages, free, 7:15 pm
Around
Kurt’s Karass: Dan Wakefield, a short documentary (35 minutes) about Kurt Vonnegut Jr, will be screened at Shortridge High School, followed by a panel discussion featuring the star of the film, Broad Ripple’s own Dan Wakefield. In the film, Dan reminisces about Kurt, a 1940 graduate of Shortridge and editor of the school’s daily paper, The Echo. Dan also an Echo writer, graduated a decade later. He traces his friendship with Kurt from his first meeting with Kurt in 1963 to the year before Kurt died, when Kurt attended a talk in New York that Dan gave. Kurt reviewed Dan’s first novel Going All The Way, in Life magazine, and wrote “Having written this novel, Dan Wakefield will never be able to go back to Indianapolis. He will have to watch the 500-mile race on television.” Lucky for us, Dan eventually moved back to Indianapolis. The panel discussion will be lead by Travis DiNicola and will feature Shortridge student Shaun’Tae Swanson, Shortridge teacher Michael Gawdzik, and Max Goller, who conducts courses for teachers who want to use Vonnegut’s work in their classroom. The Charles Bruce Foundation, a Pennsylvania based non-profit that supports Writers, Artists and Musicians (WAM!), in conjunction with the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library has devoted the past three years to interviewing some of the Vonnegut’s dearest friends. The film team has produced a series of short documentaries in hopes of preserving fond memories of this American Icon as shared first hand by his closest companions. Arrive by 6:30 to hear the Shortridge Choral group perform.

ACR Appliances - the story of a corner: part four By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com Background: In 2008 through 2019 I conducted a series of interviews with Don Albershardt. Don ran ACR Appliances at 5215 College Avenue from the 1960s into the 1990s His dad, Milton, started with a small radio shop on 52nd Street around 1927/28. I will try to tell the story of this store and also of the surrounding businesses at that corner in the coming installments. It is an interesting story.
In the last installment it is the 1930s. Milton Albershardt buys the Clark Building (still there) next to the Texaco Service Station (now Habig’s) on the northeast corner of 52nd and College Avenue. AC Radio moves from 852 E. 52nd Street into the Clark Building at 5207 N. College Avenue. Bernice’s Restaurant opened across the street (later Evan’s Cafeteria, now the Aristocrat) and the Red Key Tavern opens.
It is the mid-1930s and Milton Albershardt is now running his much larger appliance store at 5207 N. College Avenue. The new space allows for many new electric products - waffle makers, heaters, refrigerators, irons, vacuum cleaners and more. Remember Kenneth Poisel, hired in the last installment at the West Washington store? Ken is brought to the College store to work with Milton. In 1937, just three years after opening the expanded appliance store on College, Milton realizes that his medical condition will no longer allow him to run the shop. Don recalls the event, even though he was only four years old, “One January, dad came upstairs, we lived in the apartment above the store. He went to bed and never got up. He was in bed for about 6 months. He actually died at home, upstairs. He died in June, two months short of his 30th birthday.” Milton had Pneumonia as a child, which led to Rheumatic Fever. This resulted in enlarged heart valve. While Milton was home in bed for months, Ken Poisel becomes store manager. Ken reports to Milton every night about AC Radio. Milton dies June 15, 1937. Penicillin was discovered in 1939, Don says would have saved his dad. Many years later, after Ken’s death in 2002, Don’s mother shared a story with him. Don recalls that day, “When my step-father passed away in ‘02, my mother told me some stories that she had never told me before. She says, you know your dad told me, when he knew he was dying, he said don’t let that Kenny Poisel get away. He’s a good man. She ended up marrying him. He kept the business going.” Frances took Milton’s advice. Ken and Frances were married on November 30, 1937. World War II put restrictions on manufacturers, so many products were in short supply from 1939-1945, affecting the availability of appliances for AC Radio to sell. In 1941, Doc Keever’s was living at 5216 N. College Avenue, just to the north of Bernice’s Restaurant and had his office above. He moved his house about three spots to the north -
AC Radio in the summer of 1946. Texaco (now Habig’s) is on the corner to the south.
to 5226 N. College Avenue, according to Don. In the space vacated, he built a one-story yellow brick building to match the two-story Bernice’s building. Don remembers back to when he was about 8 years old, “5226, I think, is the address. We were living up stairs and watched the whole thing. The movers had the foundation ready and at midnight the power company took down the street car lines and then they pulled the house out onto College Avenue, north three houses, and then back onto the new foundation.” While looking at the above photo of 5207, Don recalls, “Ok, now we’re starting a new era. In ‘46 you could start to get merchandise again, after the war...you can see how the building’s grown over with ivy. The sign there, now says Motorola Radio for Home and Car. There’s that Texaco gas station. They had a sign out there... you could get a car wash for a dollar. “Television was not in Indianapolis yet, Cincinnati and Chicago both had a station. WLW, Cincinnati was on Channel 4, WGN in Chicago was on Channel 4. You didn’t have to switch the channel, you just turn a dial and a motor on the antenna rotates it southeast and you could get Cincinnati, and rotate it northwest and get Chicago. One would fade out, snow, and the other one would fade in. Ken Poisel’s AC Radio notebook. The cover shows all of the AC Radio locations There was the antenna. Big four-stack...this and phone numbers. Note the phone was 40 feet on top of a two-story building. numbers are 4 digits with a two-letter “WFBM Channel 6 finally went on the air in exchange prefix. The Broad Ripple prefix Indianapolis, I think it was 1949, wasn’t it? at that time was CLifford. I’m not positive of that date, but they broadcast the race. “We were selling television sets, we had ‘em to sell, I don’t know if we sold any, but we had then there in the store and we could demonstrate them.” It wouldn’t be long before TV Sets would become the best seller as more stations went on the air in Indianapolis.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 2 in the left section on the top row in the easy puzzle containing 3-4-5-8. The 2 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 3. The 2 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the space between the 5-4. The space to the right of the 8 is eliminated by the 2 in the left section of the bottom row. The only place left is to the left of the 8. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Porch Pounders My Warfleigh Wino neighbors and I have been “porching” for decades. For us it’s not a seasonal thing. We gather inside and out year round to celebrate our friendship. These days “porching” has become a fancy term for getting back into the social swing of things after a winter of indoor hibernation by gathering with friends and neighbors on your porch, deck or yard. “Porching” is also finding popularity as another way to celebrate the month of May in Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Harrison Center for the Arts have joined forces to encourage residents who live on 16th street on the east side of town, to decorate their porches to celebrate the big race on 16th street on the west side of town. Residents can win prizes, share photos and get tips on hosting 500 themed porch parties at ims. com/500forward Residents in old town Carmel have their own Porchfest in late summer. It’s a day where a handful of homes offer up their porches as stages for local musicians. The public walks from house to house listening to tunes and imbibing in food and beverages from food trucks. Beverages are an important part of a porch party. You want something simple, affordable and fun. Round Barn Winery in Michigan has a Weekend Wine Series that seems as if it was created specifically for porching. The wines are slightly sweet, very fresh, and affordable. Chill em and swill em!

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining
by Elizabeth Morse
Favorite Appetizers Celebrate Spring! Before I jump into the deets of appetizers that celebrate Spring, I want to take a moment to share some feedback I received from my last article. The comments ranged from “I loved these casseroles and want more!” and “Please include casseroles in every article!” to “I follow your organic food and cooking blog and was surprised to see pre-prepared & preservative-laden foods in your BR Gazette article”. I’d like to take a moment to address these ideas. For those who don’t follow my blog (www.Schlepicurean.com), you may not know that I am hugely committed to growing and cooking organic foods. While I personally love to cook this way, I do understand that not everyone chooses this lifestyle. I will ALWAYS offer recipes for tasty food and going forward will try to make mention of the health-conscious brands I enjoy. MSG should be a big concern to everyone. I do try to avoid it and find that Simple Truth brand Cream of Chicken Soup and sausages from purveyors like Applegate and Organic Prairie fit the bill. Any of these items could be used in the casseroles featured in my last article. Reader Marcy Carlson wants more casseroles! Girl, I haven’t forgotten but I’ve been traveling and want to get a few of my best collected for you. Look for an email from me! Back to Spring! It’s finally here. Time to begin gathering with friend on patios and front porches and I’ve got two crowd-pleasing options. Serve one, the other or both, Just be sure to have plenty of crusty French bread on hand to enjoy them with.

Spiked Olives 3 cups green olives (pimiento stuffed) 3 cups Kalamata olives (pitted) 1 cup high quality olive oil ¼ cup minced garlic Juice and zest of one lemon 3 T. crushed red pepper flakes 3 T. fresh parsley, chopped 3 T. fresh rosemary, chopped Combine all ingredients in a large glass jar and store at room temperature. Refrigerate if you want them to last longer than a week, just be sure to let them return to room temp before serving. Pro Tip: These are excellent in any season.
