Chapter Ten
From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH
Floods ravage town The town of Broad Ripple was the unhappy victim of various disasters between 1880 and 1920. The first on record was a fire which occurred in 1889 and destroyed the Ripple Hotel. That hotel, located at the corner of Winthrop and Westfield, was rebuilt, only to be damaged again in the gas explosion which also damaged Watt’s Drug Store [Note: today The Runners Forum], the I.O.O.F. Hall [Note: today The Red Room], Gresh’s Grocery, the Christian Church [Note: may have been Union Church where fire station is today], and Isaac White’s livery stable. The fire was thought to have been caused by a leak in a gas main or by a fire in an old film laboratory. This disaster killed seven people and injured several others. In 1902, Kingan’s ice houses, which occupied the area where Bill Kuhn’s used car lot is now located [Note: today FedEx & Joella’s Hot Chicken], burned. The fire was so intense that a bucket brigade had to be formed to keep nearby Broad Ripple High School from catching on fire. Rebuilt soon after the fire took place, the ice houses were later abandoned in 1917. The biggest fire, after the 1891 gas explosion, occurred February 3, 1906, and supposedly was caused by flying sparks from the 2 a.m. Monon freight train. The fire was believed to have started in Jackson’s store and to have spread first to the Hoffman House Restaurant and then to Charles Florander’s blacksmith shop. A large coal and wood storage shed near Jackson’s store ignited and continued burning for a long time after the other flames were extinguished. The fire burned for two hours before extra help came from Engine House Number Five on 15th Street and Hose Company Number Fourteen at 15th and Kenwood. These units were needed because there were no fire hydrants in the area and the Broad Ripple Fire Station needed help in obtaining water from the canal. No deaths were recorded; however, George Melick, a former Broad Ripple marshal, was nearly
Kite Realty Group held a community meeting at the old Glendale Macy’s on June 4th. There were around 30 in attendance. Kite showed the latest plans for its proposed 7-building, 267-unit, apartment project. Six of the buildings would be on the overflow parking lot east of Glendale Town Center, across Rural Street. The seventh, and largest, building would be built in the parking lot south of BW3, between the old Macy’s and Rural Street. The development would only go as far south as the cinemas. The portion of the lot east of Lowes is owned by Lowes, not by Kite. Any development on that property would be announced by Lowes. Residents had many questions, including why the old covenants restricting development in this area are being violated. It was explained that those were not traditional covenants on the deed, but zoning restrictions the City placed on the property back in 1969 when pre-Kite Glendale rezoned the east lot. It was also announced that new retail tenants are in the works for the old Macy’s space. The new buildings are scaled so as to place the taller one near Macy’s, with the shorter buildings across Rural, closer to the neighborhood. This scale then steps down to the existing wall between Glendale the neighborhood. Residents were concerned about the lack of any new barrier plantings along the wall. Kite explained that while landscaping, including trees, is planned for the rest of the development, it is felt that the wall and the existing plantings on the west side of that wall are sufficient to screen the new development. After a discussion, Kite agreed that further talks with the residents are needed to work out an acceptable landscaping plan. More public meetings will follow.

crushed by a falling chimney. Damages amounted to approximately $15,000 because the fire was not discovered until Jackson’s store was almost completely destroyed. At the end of the 1910’s, Buddenbaum’s Lumber Company, located where the Broad Ripple Lumber Company now stands [Note: today Cholita and Tiki Tiki], burned. Floods were also a threat to Broad Ripple. The flood of 1875 destroyed the Broad Ripple grist mill and also the oldest house in Broad Ripple owned by Joseph Wray, an area merchant. The men of Broad Ripple worked day and night building straw and sand levees to protect the village from White River. During the usual spring floods, the river was held back and controlled until 1884 when strong flood waters broke the levees and flooded the town. In 1903 and 1913, severe floods hit Broad Ripple again. The flood in 1913 ruined the jail and left most of Broad Ripple under water for two and a half days. Street cars attempting to reach the turn-around loop in Broad Ripple Park were either shorted out or washed off the tracks. Broad Ripple also had its share of train accidents. The worst train wreck occurred in 1884 when the railroad bridge over White River at 64th street collapsed as the train was crossing it. Several people were killed and many more were injured. Another accident occurred when a Monon train jumped the track near the old depot, now the Whistle Stop Sausage House [Note: today brics]. Several accidents involved streetcars. In one of the less serious accidents, occurring in 1910, an inexperienced streetcar conductor failed to make the turn at Broad Ripple and College and the car ended up in the canal. Near the time of annexation of Broad Ripple to the city of Indianapolis in 1923, modern fire protection became available, and from that time on fires ceased to take as great a toll. Floods were also restrained by high levees built on the river banks. Even though these threats were curbed, the number of accidents increased with the coming of automobiles.

Random Ripplings ARPO (Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership) held its 14th annual “Dog Olympics” event at Broad Ripple Park on June 1. Hosted by Q95’s Dean Metcalf, events included a 3-minute Makeover contest, a Shedding Contest, a Pie Eating Contest, Barking, Bone Finding, a T-shirt race, and a timed obstacle course. The photo in the upper left proves that dogs will put up with almost anything to please their owner.

Organizations invited to apply for grants to fund projects that explore cultural, racial issues
Indiana Humanities, in partnership with the Central Indiana Community Foundation, will award $80,000 in INcommon grants over the next two years for projects that spur in-depth thinking and conversation around the persistent social, economic, cultural and racial issues that divide our communities. Funding for the grant program is evenly split between CICF and Indiana Humanities. Indiana-based tax-exempt organizations—including schools, libraries, churches, community organizations and government entities—are invited to apply for individual grants of up to $5,000 each to support projects that creatively use historical and scholarly readings and ideas to spark conversation and learning opportunities. The grants require a 50 percent match of cash or in-kind contributions. Applications are due by Aug. 31 for this year’s round of grants totaling $40,000. Another $40,000 will be awarded in 2020. Topics suitable for these grants include but are not limited to: immigration, inclusive development, incarceration, policing, institutional racism (including the legacy impact of segregation in housing) and education. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

White River Vision Plan released On June 3rd, there was a gathering at the Indianapolis Art Center for the release of the White River Vision Plan. This is a plan for 58 miles of the White river as it travels through Hamilton and Marion counties. “The plan describes a shared vision for the two-county river area and dives deep into nine principles that will guide decisions about environmental and ecological health, equity, public safety, and activation. From north to south, every area of the river corridor is considered and organized into “river reach” zones where new ideas respond to each community’s distinct character. The plan details in-depth explorations of seven “anchor areas,” such as commercial corridors, historic districts, cultural destinations and catalytic program opportunities along the 58mile stretch of the White River. Each anchor has site-specific recommendations that all add to the varied nature of the White River experience.” Recommendations for each of the seven anchor areas are in the plan. Below is the one for Broad Ripple: “Broad Ripple: The vision for this beloved canal district reconnects the area to its riverfront by relocating parking and connecting across the levee at 64th St. to Holliday Park via the planned Broad Ripple Riverwalk and trail. It protects the historic character of residential neighborhoods and Broad Ripple’s commercial district, helps with early implementation of the planned boat launch, riverbank restoration, river walk, and terrace river edge projects. It also recommends that artists and the Indianapolis Art Center create temporary or permanent art installations.” The public can review and comment on the complete 222-page Plan for a limited time at indy.civicomment.org. ACR Appliances - the story of a corner: part six By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com Background: In 2008 through 2019 I conducted a series of interviews with Don Albershardt. Don ran ACR Appliances at 5215 College Avenue from the 1960s into the 1990s His dad, Milton, started with a small radio shop on 52nd Street around 1927/28. I will try to tell the story of this store and also of the surrounding businesses at that corner in the coming installments. It is an interesting story.
In the last installment it is the 1960s and the new ACR store is built where Delicia Restaurant is today.
In 1968 AC Radio is moving out of the south half of the Clark Building at 5207 N. College Avenue to occupy the new building to the north. The north portion of 5207 was still College Package Liquors. Around 1960, Steck Plumbing, owner of the red brick building on the northwest corner at 52nd, was upgrading the building facade with aluminum accents and raising the rents. College Package Liquor decided to move across the street into 5207. Ken Poisel, owner of AC Radio, made room by squeezing the electronics shop into about 2/3rds of the south section to make room. In a few years the liquor store owner died and Ken bought the business. Don recalls those days, “That was a fiasco because that thing used to get held up. The number of times that thing would... it was like the OK Corral. The police would hide out in it! There was a balcony in the back, and they would hide out back there. “There were bullet holes, even across the street in Bernice’s Restaurant. We had employees that would quit...you have somebody holding a gun in your face. Anyway, we got rid of that thing. Some guy came along and made him [Ken] an offer he couldn’t refuse.” The liquor store moves out and Barn Village Antiques comes in. Your editor also remembers the names Frank and Jan on the antique store. After that, Vi Walker Silver was in the 5209 building. She was followed by Susan Smith with City Dogs Grocery. Today, Edward Jones has an office there. Times are booming to the north at the new, large AC Radio appliance business. It becomes ACR Appliances as the modern world of appliance sales grows to include microwave ovens and color TVs. Don adds, “We kept adding different brands to our sign. We had a microwave expo over at the K of C Lodge on 71st in the 70s. We sold, I don’t know, 500 microwaves in one weekend. We broke all the records. We had a microwave school, we had everything. Anyway, we sold the heck out of those things.” Don remembered when movie star Yul Brynner (King and I, Magnificent Seven,
Westworld, and many more) was in town starring at the Hilton U. Brown Starlight Theatre (on the Butler University campus). “Oh! Yul Brynner bought a TV from us. Starlight Musicals...he was playing the King and I over there. He sent someone over to buy a TV for the dressing room, so we said we want to deliver it. Yul Brynner signed the check. I cashed it, but I made a copy! A little Sony, a 9-inch, he wanted it for the dressing room.” Over the years ACR Appliances expanded into Nora, Lebanon, and Columbus, Indiana. The College store was a major RCA Color TV retailer for decades. In latter years, VHS tape rentals were added. Eventually, the smaller, family-owned stores couldn’t compete with the national chains that were coming to town. Some of the first were Highland, Fretter and Luskin. Don recalls that ACR was highly competitive with those chains in product and price, but the chains had huge advertising budgets. In the summer of 1991, ACR Appliances closed. The building lives on. It later became Box Office Video and is currently Delicia and La Mulita restaurants. The previous building is home to an Edward Jones office, next door to Habig in the old Texaco Station. The first AC Radio location across the street is now The Artistry Group. Bernice’s Restaurant is now the Aristocrat. Huff’s Drug is LUNA Music. The Wil-Jo-Hen Apartments are now the College Arms. Today, Don Albershardt is a long-time member of North Side Optimists and still meets friends for breakfast every week just like the old Knobby’s days, but now at Just Judy’s.

No votes cast at May BRVA Land Use mtg The May public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee was held on Tuesday, May 28 at Northminster Presbyterian Church. This item has been before the committee several times. It is for the property at 804 E. Laverock Road. This is the north side of the canal, immediately to the east of the Fresh Thyme Farmers Market and Coil Apartments. The buildings on the site have been removed. The request is to build a Metazoa beer tasting room on the property. The two-story building would have one parking spot. No vote was taken by the committee as “there are still unresolved issues with the setbacks and the property line between Coil and the subject site”.
2) 6055 N. College Ave, Joe Calderon regarding preliminary presentation for filing of variance of use to permit use of property as a dental practice, which is not permitted; property is currently zoned D-5. This request is for a dentist office at 6055 N. College Avenue. This is where City Dogs Grocery was most recently. This was for information only as no paperwork had yet been filed downtown. The next scheduled public Land Use meeting is Tuesday, June 25 at 6pm at Northminster Presbyterian Church.

Wine Trails and Tales: Bottles and Buildings The number of Indiana wineries continues to grow as do the number of guides to use to visit them. A new book offers up a nice short synopsis of each, along with maps, pictures and an easy-to-make recipe that you could create to pair with a particular wine from that winery. Authors Todd and Becky Outcalt are travel enthusiasts who also enjoy wine. They often write for Boomer Magazine about their weekend trips around the Midwest. Oliver Winery continues to lead the pack with easy going approachable wines for the summer. Blueberry Moscato has been a tasting room favorite and is now available in retail stores. ANOTHER reason to enjoy the handmade breads, cakes, pastries, sandwiches and in house roasted coffees at Perk Up Cafe/Brotgarten on Cornell Avenue: art!! This month you can enjoy “Progress?” a retrospective of recent Broad Ripple construction projects, White River landscapes and other local images by Broad Ripple resident and Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Bill Foley. Bill spent 30 years photographing some of history’s most important events for national and international newspapers, magazines and film producers. He offers one-on-one and group seminars, and finishes his teaching career at Marian University in the fall. Bill shoots every day and chronicled much of the new construction underway in the Village. He has thoughtfully selected sequences that anyone who lives, works or plays in the Village will WANT to see and own. All of his work is for sale and Bill is available for commission work, be it portraits, landscapes or hands on classes.

Dinner Parties Make a Comeback! You know I do my best to keep you abreast of the latest and greatest food trends. Guess what’s back for 2019? Yep, dinner at home! With so many great local purveyors of food and beverage, entertaining at home is easier and more fun than ever. It’s a great time to break out your fancy China and try a new recipe. There’s no better place to relax and enjoy good food and time with friends than gathered around your own table. I’m going to challenge you to get a dinner party on your calendar. Invite folks that you keep meaning to catch up with and try this gorgeous, herb-roasted chicken as your main course. With summer’s bounty of great produce, I’d serve it with large slices of tomato and a big bowl of sautéed zucchini. Maybe a loaf of crusty bread from the farmer’s market.
Dinner Party Roast Chicken Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried rosemary 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder 1 teaspoon garlic salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 whole chicken (3-4 pounds) 2 lemons 2 tablespoons high quality olive oil 1 tablespoon honey Combine the herbs, mustard powder, garlic salt and black pepper; set aside. Rinse the chicken and remove the giblets. Place chicken in a large baking dish. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of the spice mixture inside the chicken. Rub the remaining mixture on the outside of the chicken. Squeeze the juice of the 2 lemons into a small bowl and mix with the olive oil and honey. Whisk to combine and drizzle this mixture over the chicken as evenly as you can. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 hours, or until juices run clear, basting several times with the remaining oil mixture. The bird should have a lovely brown color when it is ready to be served. Perfectly roasted chicken can’t be beat for flavor and this recipe makes a showy center piece as well. I hope you enjoy it and don’t forget to invite friends.

Winners of the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple 2018-2019 National Heritage Essay Contest The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple has sponsored the National Heritage Essay Contest for 38 years. The contest is open to sixth grade students in public, private and parochial schools in the Greater Indianapolis area. The topic students were asked to address in their essays was “What Freedom Means to Me.” Sertoma believes that participation in the National Heritage Essay Contest encourages students to better understand the founding principles of our country and to consider how those principles affect their lives today. This year, 19 schools totaling 84 classrooms submitted essays, with over 2,100 essays written. From these essays, 17 finalists were identified for consideration as one of the three Grand Prize winners and one Honorable Mention. The students, parents, relatives, teachers and principals attended a special luncheon hosted by the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple during which the Grand Prize winners read their essays and were presented with plaques, copies of the Constitution and The Bill of Rights, as well as monetary awards. The Grand Prize winners selected were: First Place Prize Winner – Grace Barnes, Creekside Middle School. Teacher - Amy Stuck Second Place Prize Winner - Beatriz Lacerda, Creekside Middle School. Teacher - Amy Stuck Third Place Prize Winner - Thalia Fecher Birdas, St. Richard’s Episcopal School. Teacher – Andrea Neal Honorable Mention Prize Winner - Claire Wilmore, The Orchard School. It is for the Glendale House Restaurant at the old Glendale Mall at 62nd and Keystone Avenue. The note inside the matchbook says this location later became Houlihan’s at Glendale.
