(part 2)

From your editor: I have received several requests for a reprint of the 1968 publication “A History of Broad Ripple” by The Junior Historical Society and The Riparian Newspaper, both of Broad Ripple High School. We haven’t published this information since 2004 and many new residents are now in Broad Ripple and have never read it. Where we come from is important. It has some errors. I will try to correct them as they appear. I will attempt to reprint the entire booklet. I will include each section as space permits. -AH

Park attracts tourists Broad Ripple Park was known as White City from 1907, when it was built, until 1922. It was probably named after the famous and impressive White City at the Chicago World’s Fair Columbian Exposition of 1893 [NOTE: the name is indeed a reference to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair Columbian Exhibition. It was nicknamed White City due to the massive white buildings. See postcard below].

Magnificent White City Park, built by the White City Company of Indianapolis, owned by Dr. Robert C. Light and W. H. Tabb, burned in 1908. Having no insurance, the owners were forced to sell. The Union Traction Company [NOTE:

is available to complement the cake balls. Wilene restyles furniture and also makes signs. The shop also carries Dixie Belle chalk paints. Rosemary makes upcycled birdbaths, bird feeders and plate flowers out of vintage glass as well as selling unique home decor items. Wilene states she likes looking for the right artisans and giving them an opportunity to sell their merchandise. People walk into the store and Linda makes instant friends. “I enjoy meeting new people when they come in,” states Linda. Rosemary says the store is “just plain fun. I enjoy helping people find things that are unique one-of-a-kind items they are not going to find anywhere else.” Every third Thursday, A ‘bit of Whimsy So Bro participates in the Broad Ripple Art Walk. More information is listed at the store’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/abitofwhimsysobro/ and their Instagram page at #abitofwhimsysobro. They can also be reached at abitofwhimsysobro@gmail. com. They will be offering a variety of workshops taught by the shop’s artisans, throughout the summer. The artisans participate in pop-up markets on the sidewalk in front of the store a couple of times each month. The store is expanding into additional space at 5206 N. College Avenue and this area will offer artisan restyled furniture, fine art, and vintage upcycled and farmhouse home decor and more. A ‘bit of Whimsy is glad to be part of the Southern Broad Ripple business community. Neighbors frequently walk their pets by the shop and bring them into this pet-friendly location for a dog biscuit treat. A ‘bit of Whimsy So Bro’s hours are 12 noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are closed Monday and Tuesdays. The store phone number is (317) 426-4336. The friendship and artistry that Linda Birch, Rosemary Fowler and Wilene Gillim share awaits your visit at A ‘bit of Whimsy So Bro at 52nd and College Avenue.

of the park for eleven years, rebuilt it and restored many of the old amusements. Several new attractions were also added. During the summer months, the City billed such shows as a man wrestling a live alligator. There were also entertainers who drank milk and ate fruit under water. In 1908, the White City Company built the second largest swimming pool in the country. In 1922, the National Swimming Event took place in the Broad Ripple pool, and, in 1924, the Olympic tryouts were there. At this meet, Johnny Weissmuller won the one-hundred-meter freestyle and later went on to win a gold medal at the Olympics [NOTE: Johnny Weissmuller was the star of 12 Tarzan films in the 1930s and 1940s]. Again in 1952, the Olympic tryouts were at Broad Ripple pool. Judy Roberts, 1952 Broad Ripple High School graduate, was chosen as a member of the US Olympic Swim Team which competed at Helsinki. In 1922, the Broad Ripple Amusement Company bought the park from the Traction Company; and at this time the name was changed from White City to Broad Ripple Park. Also at this time, two baseball diamonds, a football field, a cinder track, and two bath houses were added under the direction of James A. Makin, later the founder of the Riviera Club. A giant roller coaster was also added to the park. In 1927, the park was sold to Oscar and Joseph Baur. Many of the rebuilt rides of 1908 were removed to enlarge the midway. New amusements such as the Temple of Mystery, the “dodg’em,” and Huffman’s Auto Speedway were also added. In the same year, the pool was remodeled. A well was also dug so that river water would not have to be used to fill the pool. The price of admission was increased from 15 to 25 cents for adults and from 5 to 10 cents for children. In 1938, W. A. McCurry bought the park, and on December 21, 1945, the park was purchased by the city of Indianapolis.

New Paradigm Church is the proposed new HQ for Olio Health in Item B below.

June Land Use committee meeting By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The June public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s Land Use and Development committee meeting was held on June 25 at Northminster Presbyterian Church at 6pm. There were approximately 15 in attendance. There were two items on the agenda (in BOLD below). [As a note: The Broad Ripple Gazette archives the committee’s agendas on its website at www. broadripplegazette.com/brva_archive.htm] A. 5908 Broadway St., Petition No. 2019-DV1-025; Nate Ward seeks a development standards variance to provide for a single-family dwelling seven feet from the dwelling to the south (10 ft required). (6:05-6:25) This item was for properties at 5908 and 5912 N. Broadway Street. This proposal was also before the committee at the January meeting. The property currently has one residence and one detached garage. The project splits the property into the two plots 5908 and 5912. The garage, now on lot 5908 would be removed and a house built in its place. A shared drive for the two houses would go between the structures. Eventually, two more houses would be built at the rear of the lots with frontages on what now appears to be an alley, but is actually Park Avenue. At the time when the 3rd and 4th houses are built, Park Avenue would be improved and utilities would be brought up from Kessler Boulevard. The committee had many issues with the details of this proposal. It decided to hold off on taking a vote until the staff at the Department of Metropolitan Development sees the new plans and makes a recommendation to the city. B. 6202 Carrollton Ave., Petition No. 2019MOD006, New Paradigm Church/ David Kingen regarding petition to modify commitments to permit church structure to be converted into office use. (6:25-6:45) This item is to convert the existing New Paradigm Church building at 62nd and Carrollton Avenue into offices. Olio Health, a healthcare digital collaboration platform supplier, would move its headquarters to the building. The building and parking are adequate for the use. The variances needed are to change previous zoning commitments placed on the property to allow for ADA ramps and business office hours. There would be between 18 to 30 employees at this office. The interior of the building would be renovated, but the exterior would remain mostly as it is now, with some needed improvements to doors and windows. The committee voted to support this proposal. UPDATE: 804 Laverock Road (property to build a Metazoa Brewing building) is delayed again because of delays in surveying information. The next public meeting of the committee is scheduled for July 23.

Burgers, Beer, and Supporting Education

Bring your appetite to the 7th annual Indy Burger Battle on Saturday, July 27th! Organized by Indy-based non-profit Building Tomorrow, this grill-off features 15+ local restaurants, each competing with their own unique, mouthwatering, slider-sized burger. It’ll be up to the people and celebrity judges to crown the best. Not only will guests have the chance to try every burger and wash it down with Sun King beer, but all proceeds fund Building Tomorrow’s mission to promote access to quality education in East Africa. The mission began in 2004, when founder George Srour found himself in a Ugandan school of 500 students and only 4 classrooms. Still a student himself, Srour raised enough money to establish Building Tomorrow’s first school in Uganda’s capital in 2006. Fast forward to 2019, Building Tomorrow has built 75 schools and enrolled 50,000+ previously out-of-school children. Take a look inside the classrooms and you’ll find an inclusive, interactive learning atmosphere that ensures the best learning outcomes for all students. Building Tomorrow don’t just build schools, they make them effective, too. This event takes place Saturday, July 27th from 1-4pm on West Georgia Street. Each ticket gives you the chance to try every burger, and VIP ticket holders can skip the line and enter at noon. For tickets and more info, visit www.IndyBurgerBattle.com. Scheduled participants: Tried & True Alehouse, Eddie Merlot’s, Smokehouse Catering, Kilroy’s Bar & Grill, Sugarfire Smokehouse, The Pint Room, Spoke & Steele, Daredevil Hall, Pull Up Grill, Stacked Pickle, Flamme Burger, Red Lion Grog House, Weber Grill, Skyline Club, Prodigy Burger & Bar, and Burger Study.

Where’s Waldo? In Indy!

Where’s Waldo? The question has occupied millions of minds for thirty-two years now, since Martin Handford published the first book in 1987. Since then, the Where’s Waldo series continues to enjoy a cherished space on bookshelves everywhere. With almost 65 million copies printed in over 20 languages, Waldo is a true international icon that continues to keep audiences searching. The shops at 56th and Illinois Street are taking this search to the next level, in cooperation with Kids Ink Bookstore! Waldo’s Anniversary is celebrated nationwide all month in July, and Kids Ink wants you to join the party. Neighboring stores will be hosting a Waldo figure somewhere for kids to find from July 15th through July 31st. Children can pick up a “passport” from Kids Ink and go looking for him around the neighborhood – with adult supervision, of course. Anyone that finds Waldo at every participating location and returns their list to Kids Ink will be entered for a prize drawing. Kids Ink is one of over 500 independent bookstores across the country participating, but we’re determined to have the most entries, and we need local kids’ help to make that happen. We’re looking forward to enjoying this with everyone in Indianapolis. For more information, please call (317) 255-2598.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or longtime business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

No Limits Inaugural Celebration and Kick-Off Friday, July 26 Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired 7725 N College Ave. - all-ages, 6:30 - 10 pm, $25 - 75

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Hello darlings, we’re solidly into summertime and I hope you’re finding that the livin’ is easy, the fish are jumping and the cotton is high. I hope to see you out and about!

Cousin Brothers 15th Anniversary Party Friday, July 12 The Melody Inn 3826 N. Illinois St. - 21+, 7 - 9:30, $5

The Cousin Brothers are celebrating their 15th anniversary of “puttin’ the kickass back into bluegrass.” The band is a fun mix of rock, country, bluegrass, and good times. Help them celebrate their 15th anniversary - I have a theory that band years are like dog years, each one equals seven - in [Old] Style.

Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) kicks off their No Limits Arts Series each year on the anniversary of the signing. ISBVI is also celebrating the renovation of their 1930’s auditorium. The beautiful space will be used as a community gathering space for performances, inclusive films, and other cultural experiences. The first public performance in the auditorium will feature the Matthew Whitaker Quartet. At age 18, Matthew Whitaker has already received numerous accolades for his piano playing including the “Outstanding Soloist Award” from Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Charles Mingus High School Competition & Festival. This year, Matthew was awarded the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award for his original song “Emotions.” Matthew has toured both here and abroad, performing before The Youth Assembly at the United Nations, and on other renowned stages, including: Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, and Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC; SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco; the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival and at international venues in Europe, Portugal, Japan, and Morocco. Tickets range in price from $25-$50 and include a pre-concert reception with heavy appetizers and select complimentary beverages as well as the performance by the Matthew Whitaker Quartet. A post-concert reception will feature a Q and A with Matthew Whitaker and emcee, Kathy Nimmer, and will also include deserts and complimentary drinks for an additional $25.

Haikus provide a fun and easy way to get involved in poetry. The 17-syllable format is hardly demanding. The main challenge is in chopping it down into something meaningful. Below are seven haikus I ‘chopped down’ from Thomas Cleary’s translation of the Tao Te Ching on March 10, 2006. 1 hope they came out well, for they were sculpted from truly elegant verses. 7. Clue: X equals Z

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn another, more complex, way to solve. Trying to place a 2 in the left section of the middle row on the medium puzzle. A future 2 can only be in the red section of the right section of the middle row because the 2 in the center section eliminates the spaces to the left of the 4. Even though we don’t know which if these 3 space the 2 will go, it will eliminate the 3 green spaces in the left section. Since the 2 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces below the 8, the only one place for the 2 is two spaces to the right of the 1. This complicated, two-step, technique can come in handy.

More Mini’s and Milestones As mentioned in last issue’s column, wine in a can is back. But if 2 and half glasses is too much, no worries–you can get a glass and a half with a new line of can wine from Prophecy. The labels are reason enough to buy Prophecy wine in a bottle and now the 250ml can. Each label features a beautifully drawn character that reflects the juice inside. I can see these mini 2-packs as fun holiday stocking stuffers, take home gifts for adult birthdays or add a straw and serve at a bridal shower. Three varietals affordably priced and widely available.

Fifteen and Fabulous In 2004, Kim McManama turned a neglected cottage on Cornell into Perk Up Cafe. She kept the menu small and fresh and brought in her own coffee roasting system. Locals and visitors found a respite from the sudden surge of chain restaurants and coffee shops popping up on every corner. A few years later Kim wanted to add wine to her events but didn’t want to buy a license. I owned the Mass Ave Wine Shoppe at that time and could use my license to pour off-site. Kim and I became friends and strong supporters of each other as we were among the few female-owned businesses in the city at that time. She also had support from a very talented manager, baker and roaster in Alice Matsuo. Alice and her husband had lived around the world and Alice learned her crafts from some of the best. She only used fresh, authentic ingredients in her breads, and moderately roasted her beans to stay true to their natural flavor. Kim added a selection of German pastries and cakes that were custom baked by Jeanette Footman. Customers could dine in or buy a loaf or cake or torte to go. In 2009 Kim sold the business to Alice and Jeanette who added the Brotgarten name as their high quality, authentic German products had garnered a strong following. My friendship and collaboration with Kim extended to Alice and Jeanette and I was delighted to help when they needed wine or support for an event. Alice and Jeanette have grown the business slowly and smartly over the past ten years, always staying true to their mission of producing simple, fresh, authentic products. Perk Up’s original menu item, a fried egg sandwich on whole grain bread continues to be a customer favorite. This month Perk Up Cafe/Brotgarten celebrates 15 years of being owned and operated by women who value taste and quality over quantity and flash. Congrats to Alice and Jeanette who continue to support local art, music and small businesses along with their delicious products seven days a week. www. perkupindy.com

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

Aunt Lydia’s Potato Salad Happy summer, my friends! Entertaining in warm weather often means pitch-ins and picnics. One of the quintessential side dishes for summer outings is potato salad. Look no further! Aunt Lydia’s is my “go-to” and an instant favorite of anyone lucky enough to enjoy a scoop.

t a w

Now, Aunt Lyd doesn’t really measure anything, so these measurements are my interpretation of her original. PRO TIP: Assemble this dish about 24 hours before you want to serve it. It improves as the flavors have a chance to meld.

Aunt Lydia’s Potato Salad

BroadRippleHistory.org PRESERVING OUR PAST FO R G E N E R AT I O N S TO C O M E

(Serves 14-16)

Ingredients: 10 large potatoes, peeled, cubed and boiled until fork-tender 12 eggs, hard-boiled, peeled and chopped 2 medium-sized white or yellow onions, peeled and diced 6 stalks celery, chopped 1 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 1/2 cup sour cream Salt and Pepper, to taste FRESH CHIVES, OPTIONAL Directions: After potatoes have been drained and are cool, combine all ingredients in a very large bowl. Mix well and taste. At this point, I like to cover and refrigerate overnight. Adjust mayo & sour cream to your liking (some folks like EXTRA creamy potato salad) after about 12 hours. Just be sure to add the mayo and sour cream in equal amounts. Garnish with chopped fresh chives, if desired. This salad is a lovely companion to fried chicken, sandwiches and burgers. As always, let me know what you think and enjoy! Elizabeth Morse, owned the Corner Wine Bar in Broad Ripple for close to 20 years. She is a graduate of IU, Hoosier Chef, Food Writer, Wine Guru & Advanced Master Gardener who believes in supporting all things local. Check out her blog: www.schlepicurean.com.
