Storefront Theatre of Indianapolis opens Sept 7 By Mario Morone

MURAL MANIA There are new murals all around Broad Ripple. So many that we haven’t shown them all here. Above: Mural in the alley by the Alley Cat.

Bottom four images: These are all Muck Rock murals. They are on the south end of the alley between Carrollton and Guilford, just north of 61st Street.

For playwright and director Ronan Marra, the show must go on. As Artistic Director of the Storefront Theatre of Indianapolis at 717 Broad Ripple Avenue, he recently discussed his career and provided a sneak preview of the venue. “I was in Chicago for about 14 years and previous to that, I grew up outside Cleveland, Ohio. When I moved to Chicago, I started Signal Ensemble with a couple other guys. That theatre was around for 13 years where I directed many of the shows and also wrote a few,” he explained. “When I went to college (at Kent State) for theatre, I initially majored in acting. I wrote a play and got the buzz then as my professors and mentors encouraged me. When I cofounded Signal Ensemble, I wrote and directed our first endeavor,” Marra recalled. His playwriting credits at the Signal Ensemble include the book for photo by Mario Morone The Next Thing (Jeff Nomination Ronan Marra is founder of the Store Theater at 6283 N. College Avenue. in New York; music and lyrics by Jon Steinhagen), Motion, Aftermath, Landslide (Jeff Nomination – New York) and Learning To Fly. His plays have been produced or workshopped in Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles and Cleveland. He was a 2012 finalist Storefront Theatre for the Joanne Woodward/Paul Newman of Indianapolis Drama Award for Motion and received 717 Broad Ripple Ave [H3 on map] the 2006 Illinois Arts Council Finalist Award in Scriptworks for Landslide. New www.storefrontindy.com City Stage named Marra one of the “Fifty People Who Really Perform in Chicago” in 2012. Artistic talent runs in his family. His father, Ronan Sr., has acted in various community theatre productions including A Few Good Men, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Sound of Music, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and most recently, The Sensuous Senator. He works for Gemmer Wealth Management. His brother, Steve, owns Adrenaline Motion Pictures and graduated from UCLA Film School and worked on the West Coast as a writer, producer and editor. He was also a touring musician and recording artist for Capitol Records and the TRC Records label. They are members of the Storefront Theatre’s advisory board. A Broad Ripple location was on a future playbill for Marra and his family. “We were still in Chicago around 2015. My wife and I have a seven-year-old son. We talked about school and wanted to get a single family home. My father and step-mother lived in Fishers where we looked for a house. All those things bring you to the suburbs, but I still operated the company in Chicago. We later closed it down and I was going to freelance here and elsewhere. I didn’t come here (to Indianapolis) with the intent of starting a theatre.” Marra mentioned. “We produced two shows for the Indy Fringe Festival in our first season. Our second season will be here in Broad Ripple. Midway through our first season, we wanted to pick a location and noticed there isn’t a performing arts center here. While living in Fishers and going to Broad Ripple where a lot of artists and people lived, I learned that my board member president, Julia Myer, owned Fortitude Fitness upstairs (above the location). Instead of just having a small theatre, we will have a bar and art gallery with rotating exhibits for local artists. It can be a multipurpose facility. Storefront Theatre will only produce two or three shows a year, but we will have guest artists whose work will appear,” he noted. The main entrance is along Broad Ripple Avenue. The box office where people can check in, pick up their program and get a drink, is downstairs. The main stage has a small, 50 seat black box theatre. There can also be corporate meetings, fundraisers, weddings and more. “Until this space came into play, we weren’t considering a multi-purpose space, we have an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Access) entrance along North

College Avenue. Live theaters need immediate parking. Being able to start a show and having a parking lot for patrons is a great thing. There will cosmetic changes made all around the existing venue (formerly Peppers nightclub),” he added. Marra is developing the plot for the venue. “The key thing from a branding standpoint is that the Storefront Theatre is the name of the building where we do our own production, but it’s also a hub for local art and artists. We’re a production company that produces works by female and minority playwrights as premieres. Producing new work is my specialty and it’s where I’ve settled in my career as far as producing and directing. Everything I’m doing here is based on my experience in Chicago, which was housed in an old warehouse. We’re a small, professional operation producing plays and a great place to do contemporary theatre. Tickets sales account for 25 percent of revenue. We’re a 501 (c) (3) company.” Storefront’s first production in the new facility, PILGRIMS, opens Saturday, September 7th. Tickets are available at: www.storefrontindy.com/box-office.

Ind. Writers Center celebrates 40th year with book launch

The Indiana Writers Center will celebrate its 40th anniversary year September 20, with the launch of a new book by Barbara Shoup — a writer who has led the organization dedicated to the craft over its most vibrant decade. A Commotion in Your Heart: Notes on Writing and Life “is a memoir about the writing life,” Shoup said. Told in vignettes that focus on moments of understanding about what writing is, and is not, the book charts Shoup’s journey from her childhood dream of becoming an author through the ups and downs of publishing, “as well as the joys of teaching aspiring writers of all ages,” she said. Shoup, who as of July 1 handed the executive directorship to Rachel Sahaidachny, will take on the role of the IWCs first writer-in-residence — returning to what she enjoys most, teaching and coaching writers and writing, and working on projects of her own. The Sept. 20 event at the Schwitzer Gallery at the Circle City Industrial Complex. It will also be a fundraiser for the Writers Center, as the organization continues its mission of reaching out to people whose voices are rarely heard and furthering the goals of helping writers hone their skills and find power and joy that engaging in the creative process brings. Join us as we celebrate the Indiana Writers Center’s continued dedication to writers and writing.

Circle of Lights® continues with digital audition process

Starting Sept. 10, interested entertainers can digitally submit an audition video for a chance to perform on Downtown’s biggest stage. Downtown Indy, Inc. and the electrical workers of IBEW 481 announce that it is time for Indy’s own renowned holiday auditions, with a twist. Indiana entertainers, singers, musicians, dancers, choral groups and more are invited to submit a digital video as an audition to perform at the 57th annual Downtown Indy, Inc. Circle of Lights® presented by IBEW 481, which takes place on Monument Circle in Downtown Indianapolis Friday, Nov. 29. Two-minute, holiday-themed video submissions will be accepted: Sept. 10 - 26 via www.wthr. com/CircleOfLights. It’s as easy as recording on your smart phone, filling out an online form and submitting online. (There will be NO on-site, open auditions.) From all the video submissions, finalists may be selected for an invitation-only audition which will take place Saturday, Oct. 26 to perform live for judges. Finalists will perform two different songs. Some acts may be selected to perform on stage during Downtown Indy, Inc.’s Circle of Lights presented by IBEW 481 or invited to participate during other Downtown Indy, Inc. holiday presentations. Performers should prepare a video using the following specifications: Judges are looking for talent, visual presentation and stage presence. Can you command a large stage in front of 100,000 spectators? Video auditions should not exceed two minutes. This time limit will be strictly enforced when watching the videos. Acts chosen for the actual live show will have approximately 3 minutes to perform, but for the sake of time, we must limit video auditions. A holiday theme is required (upbeat music preferred). A cappella acts are rarely chosen to advance. Please use recorded musical tracks while performing. Solo and group acts welcome. No editing videos. Please review the WTHR video tips before preparing your video audition: www.wthr.com/CircleOfLights Selected groups must commit to two evening rehearsals Nov. 7 & 21 and from 2:30 – 8:30 p.m. on the day of the event. www.downtownindy.org/happening-downtown/hot/downtown-indy-inc-circle-of-lightspresented-by-ibew-481/

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather (class of 1896), uncle (class of 1951), father (class of 1947), sister (class of 1970) and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, and now is band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As the president of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Anyone else spend Sunday, September 1st riding the Red Line from end to end? I did! I’m so excited for being able to hop on and arrive in front of The Vogue and ride home from enjoying Broad Ripple restaurants, shopping, and music without worrying about parking and such. The Red Line is free for the whole month of September, check it out. Since I mentioned The Vogue, they have some pretty great shows coming up.

Robert Randolph & The Family Band Wednesday, September 11th The Vogue Theatre 6259 College Ave 21+, doors 7pm, show 8pm $25 adv., $30 day of show Robert Randolph & The Family Band (the core of them are family) are known for their funk and rock sensibilities. Robert and the band just released an album that reaches back to his church music beginnings while staying true to his funk roots. I’m sure it will be fabulous!

Brighter Days is the latest album from Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

Bohemian Rhapsody Monday, September 16th The Vogue 6259 College Ave - 21+, doors 7 pm, film start 8 pm, $5

I love how The Vogue is honoring their movie house roots by screening movies. I can’t tell you how many times Brenda Rising-Moore has seen the film Bohemian Rhapsody, but I’m pretty sure it’s in the double digits. I was lucky enough to see it with her last winter. I loved it then, and it’s time for me to see it again. Bohemian Rhapsody celebrates the music of Queen and their singer Freddie Mercury. The movie takes us though their meteoric rise of the band and challenges of Freddie pursuing a solo career and his health issues and reconciliation. Of course there is music, lots of glorious music. The Vogue has partnered with Condado Tacos for this event.

The poem below is about the contradictions we face in society and within us. It is roughly based on Krishna’s instructions to Arjuna during the battle in the Bhagavad Gita. However, the poem is not about enlightenment. It is about survival.

The Battlefield Brutal paradoxes lie all around Some are dying, some are gaining ground Seeming to defy physics and metaphysics Internalizing the external When the internal is enough to deal with So forces wage battle Within and without Leaving little doubt That survival itself May result in A little untangling C. Four properties associated with item B in the zoning below.

September zoning issues at public meeting By Alan Hague

We offer Health Coverage for:

alan@broadripplegazette.com There were approximately 20 in attendance at the August public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s Land Use and Development Committee meeting held at Northminster Presbyterian Church. There were two items on the agenda (in bold below). A) 6528 Cornell Avenue, Joshua Savage of Wooden McLaughlin LLP requesting rezoning from D-4 to MU-2, to cohere with comprehensive plan recommendation. Petition #2019-ZON-07 This project is to rezone the property on the northwest corner of Cornell Avenue and Coil Street. The house at this address was most recently Athletic Annex Running Centre and the garage for that house had been Natural Born Juicers. The property is zoned D-4 (residential) and has variances to allow for a shoe store and a juice bar. The owner of the property wishes to rezone the land as MU-2 (mixed use). The committee was concerned that this rezoning request is premature, as there are no tenants in mind. MU-2 allows for many types of businesses, not all are desirable for the area by the committee. The petitioner agreed to submit a subset of the allowable business types list to put restrictions on the MU-2. This will likely happen via email and the vote will also likely be by email, meaning that it will likely not be seen by the Gazette for reporting purposes when that occurs. B) 6200 N. College Avenue, Dan Jacobs information-only presentation regarding a potential office development This item was for information only. Nothing has been filed yet and the building has not been designed. This project would replace the four buildings on the northeast corner of 62nd and College Avenue. This is about half of the structures included in the recentlywithdrawn proposal by another developer. The properties along Carrollton Avenue are

not included in this proposal as this project stops at the alley. The project is to raze the four properties and build a 5-story building containing an underground parking deck, 65,000 sq. ft. of office space, and 44 living spaces. About 50,000 sq. ft. of the office space would house the new headquarters of a local development company. That company would also use about half of the living spaces for out-of-town business visitors undergoing training. The committee was generally positive about the proposed daytime office use for the Village. There were many concerns expressed concerning the height of the building along 62nd Street and the setback of the building proposed along College Avenue. The developer agreed to look into modifications to help the design fit better into the neighborhood. These changes and a design for the building will be presented at a future public meeting. The next public meeting of the Land Use Committee is scheduled for October 24th at 6pm at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard [KK28 on map].

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 7 in the middle section on the top row in the easy puzzle containing 2-3-4-5-6. The 7 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 3. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 4-6. The only place left is to the right of the 5. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

A few Sundays ago I poured Spanish wines and emceed the Fiesta de Artes fundraising event for the Gennesaret Clinics. Ron Miller of Cork and Cracker was the featured retailer. He was one of many generous volunteers, artists, musicians, dancers and organizers who gave their time to create an entertaining and educational evening for those attending. Gennesaret offers free medical/dental/ respite services to those who can’t afford it. I poured 6 wines at my table. The lush, dry reds from Bodegas Muriel were the favorites. The 2013 Reserva was lively with an inviting nose of blackberry, mulberry, and anise. Herbs and dark fruit flavors lingered on the finish. The 2006 Gran Reserva was a knockout. The nose had that deliciously distinctive “old world” funk along with blackberry, licorice and a hint of sage. Guests also enjoyed the crisp, off dry, Poema Dulce Cava. Tiny bubbles and notes of stone fruit made this sparkling wine a real treat. White wine lovers also liked the Don Alegario Albarino. Silky smooth, with notes of lemongrass and minerals made it the perfect thirst quencher for a warm summer evening. Stop by Cork and Cracker and talk with Ron about these and other delicious wines poured that night.

Where in the Village? puzzle on Page 12

Answer: These are BR items for sale at the BRVA booth at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market.

This past weekend I emceed an event featuring Italian Chef/Restaurateur/Author and PBS TV personality, Lidia Bastianich. She has a new season of Lidia’s Kitchen shows coming to PBS, a new cookbook featuring recipes from her award winning restaurant, Felidia and a memoir, My American Dream: a life of love, family and food. Lidia’s family immigrated to the US from communist Isteria when she was a young girl. Her memoir recounts those challenging early years along with her life as a female chef working in the male dominated restaurant world and the importance of food and family in her life. Lidia is the real deal. She spent two hours with us taping TV Pledge breaks, then met with guests and signed books for an hour and THEN took part in an hour long interview session. Over 100 people attended and also enjoyed the reception sponsored by the Italian Heritage Society. Broad Ripple resident (and Italian expert) Carol Faenzi and her group of volunteers created a beautiful table of Italian foods including dishes from So-Bro’s Nicole-Taylor. Guests sipped glasses of La Marca Prosecco and enjoyed an afternoon that reflected Lidia’s signature phrase, “Tutti a tavola a mangiare” which means everyone to the table to eat.

Putting the treat back in treatment

Pizza Party Many of you follow my blog, schlepicurean.com and have seen my pizza oven project come to fruition over the last year. For those who haven’t, I’ve built a wood-fired oven in my backyard as an addition to my outdoor kitchen. I’ve spent a few months now perfecting my dough and though it would be fun to share the results with you. And who doesn’t love a pizza party? No matter where you plan to cook you pie(s), a great crust is essential. I like one that is chewy, flavourful, pretty thin and gets those lovely big air bubbles. The following recipe is what I’ve come to like best. You can make it ahead and keep it in the fridge for a few days, making it even more versatile.

Pizza Dough 4 cups flour (I’ve used both a “OO” Pizza flour and all-purpose- both work) 2 cups warm water 2 t active, dry yeast 2 T sea salt (using a smoked salt is also tasty) 2 T granulated sugar Combine in a large bowl, or stand mixer. Mix until the dough forms and knead for 8 minutes - if kneading by hand, in the bowl or on the counter is fine. The dough should have “picked up” all the flour and the bowl should be clean. Your dough should be pretty firm and smooth. Drizzle a little oil (I like olive) in your bowl and place dough ball in to rise for about an hour. At this point, divide into portions ( I can get 8, 10’ pies from this recipe) and on a floured surface, begin to tap out the dough with your finger tips. Place the dough onto a lightly greased cookie sheet and top as desired. Bake in a preheated (500 degrees) on the middle rack for 8-10 minutes. Slice and serve immediately. I like to have dough set out and ingredients so that everyone can make their own pie. Of course, taking turns means that you have to man the oven for a bit, but it is a fun party and always a hit.

Great combos that I love include: • Tomato sauce, fresh slices of mozzarella, tomato, crushed red pepper, garlic and basil. (a zesty take on traditional Margherita pizza) • Fig jam (instead of tomato sauce), caramelized onions, prosciutto, and blue cheese crumbles. • Tomato sauce, Italian sausage, onions and several kinds of sweet peppers. • Mozzarella and asiago cheeses (no sauce) with large slices of deli pepperoni, crushed tomatoes and pepperoncini peppers. This is a great party to host on football nights with a few beers or a good bottle of red wine. Cheers! Elizabeth Morse, owned the Corner Wine Bar in Broad Ripple for close to 20 years. Random Ripplings The 24th Annual Labor Day Street Fair was a big hit at 54th and College Avenue. The afternoon of Jazz was held on the sidewalk in front of the Jazz Kitchen. This year riders of the Red Line listened from the platform as they waited for the next bus. The fair kicks off the Indy Jazz Fest.
