Patrick Mack - Art on the Monon Trail By Mario Morone

INDEX

Local artist Patrick Mack creates one of a kind sculptures for clients. He recently described his artistic beginnings. “I came from a very large art family of ten kids, where everyone was an artist, including my parents. I loved photography and enjoyed the works of Nancy Brown, a photographic illustrator. Another inspirational photographer was National Geographic's Jim Brandenburg. His work on arctic wolves captured how they lived and socialized. I pursued photography, first by being the photo editor of my high school newspaper, then as a staff photographer with the South Bend Tribune. This led me to refine my skills at the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, Georgia which then let me take on commercial photography for several years,” he explained. “My photography pursuits changed course when I took a trip to Europe and discovered the sculptures of Rodin, Giacometti, and Michelangelo. They were very connected to classical tales and the human condition. Their works showed the living human form in bronze and stone. I wanted to discover how they approached creating human emotions and feeling through inanimate material,” Mack said. “While at Indiana University, I took several courses in fine arts. My mentor Jean Paul Darriau (“JP”, Professor of Sculpture Emeritus at the IU School of Fine Arts) encouraged me to create pieces to move people to think about art and what is going on in the Patrick Mack world. ‘Pat, incorporate a social consciousness in the pieces you create,’ ” he would say. www.creationsbypatmack.com His career took shape in a new direction. “I launched my own art studio business in 1995, with the focus of making custom metal works for individuals, ad agencies and companies. My first major bronze sculpture came from a connection to the Mel and Bren Simon family. They had seen a small golfer I designed and were interested in creating a larger version about 11 feet tall. At the time I was not fully versed in how to cast bronze and I quickly got to work on learning everything I could to become a clay to bronze artist,” he described. The Simon project led him into another artistic area. “This opportunity opened up a whole new direction to offer sculpture as a new medium. With the help of the Indianapolis Arts Council’s Creative Renewal grant, I spent several months learning more about casting at foundries in New York and Oklahoma. One of the takeaways

Maybe this one should have been a Where in the Village? This hard hat birthday party was held for two BR business women, Linda Shikany (Marigold) and Brenda Rising-Moore (Union Jack Pub), at the future home of the Hotel Broad Ripple on Westfield Boulevard. See more pictures of the construction tour on page 20.

for me was to focus on the lost wax technique, where I create a sculpture in clay, make a plaster mold of that and then create a wax impression of the mold. It is this wax that is taken to the foundry to be setup for casting. The process creates organic fluid movement with much surface detail and texture, showing off the advice I had received about incorporating a social consciousness in the pieces you create,” Mack noted. Domestic events have also shaped his perspective and influenced his work. “Visiting New York City after 9/11, I felt a calling to create a piece that expressed the sadness and the anger I felt about all the people who were murdered on that day. To work through the emotions, I created several designs that lead to the creation of the steel rod sculpture, Angel of Hope that is located on the Monon Trail, just south of 52nd Street. This sculpture brought focus to the gentle and strong image of a child being held by an angel. I saw this as a symbol of hope for us and generations to come,” he reflected. “Several of my pieces can be seen in and around Indianapolis, West Lafayette and Richmond. Besides the Angel of Hope on the Monon Trail, there are eight horses in a steel plate, a fountain piece and the front entrance sculpture for the Telemon Corporation; Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers plus Two Becomes One sculptures inside Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University; works at the Hoosier Salon Gallery and the Yellow Robot Walking Her Little Red Dog at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Also, I have designed the Riley Foundation large donor gift sculptures, carved a life-size Madonna with Child for St. Thomas Catholic Church and added the Starlight, Star Bright alongside the Angel of Hope on the Monon Trail,” he added. His artistic works can be also be seen at: www.creationsbypatmack.com/art. He can be contacted at: PatMack@CreationsByPatMack.com. Patrick Mack’s personal search continues as: “The essential purpose and value of my art is to deepen our own sense of humanity through a balance of form and content, to evoke our dreams, deepen our spirituality and give hope to darkness. The more powerful the representation of the form, the more powerful the questions become.”

The Broad Ripple Gazette

Jan 10 - Jan 23, 2014

Local businessman publishes photo book By Heidi Huff-Hague

heidi@broadripplegazette.com Local business owner and Broad Ripple resident Bruce Buchanan wants to show you the Village from his perspective. His new photography book, The Quiet Side of the Village, does exactly that with 40 pages of vantages and views from all around the neighborhood. Buchanan, who you may know from the family-owned funeral services of ‘Flanner & Buchanan,’ describes himself as a Broad Ripple lifer. He is a also a former professional photographer and was trained in photojournalism at IU. The photos are scenes from his daily walks on the Monon Trail, down back alleys, in and out of stores, and whatever else strikes his fancy. As Buchanan says, “This book is my personal testament of the Broad Ripple I love – the pretty one.” Buchanan has an eye for composition both in the photographs and in the artful layout of the book. Inside this colorful creation you’ll find coffee shops and cars, a mural and mailboxes, and even a glimpse of bricks and brics. The seasons of the Monon Trail, views of the Canal, Bruce Buchanan of Flanner and Buchanan. and the brightly colored flowers all make you yearn for spring. And speaking of spring – look for the book at their stop on the Spring Gallery Tour. To preview the book, find out more about the photographer, and get a copy for yourself visit www.buchananphotocelebrations.com . The book is also available at several local shops including: Hoosier Salon, Perk Up, Fine Estate, Flanner & Buchanan, and Artifacts.

Tenth Annual Elvis Birthday Bash Saturday, January 11 Radio Radio 1119 E. Prospect 21+, 9:00 PM, $10

I’ve been to several of the Elvis Birthday Bashes and they are always a blast. This year promises to be epic. This year, in honor of the King’s 81st birthday, Wayne Bertsch is basing the show on the iconic Sun Records’s “Million Dollar Quartet” photograph, taken on a day that Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis Pressley were all in the Sun Records studio at the same time. Wayne said “ My wife and I saw the stage play of the Million Dollar Quartet and thought how cool it would be to base this years Elvis Birthday Bash around that.” The lineup, in Wayne’s words: “ToeKnee Tea as Carl Perkins: ToeKnee plays a raucous street wise blues that has all the grit and edginess of his old punk band Hate the Drake. He gets so much sound out of beat up guitar and stomp box it's hard to believe that he's doing it all himself. His single Elkhart County Jail is the type of song that would've been right at home on Sun Records and I'm thrilled to hear what he does with Carl Perkins rockabilly catalogue. Jakis Strakis as Jerry Lee Lewis: Jakis is a gifted keyboard player. Every band he's in whether it's The Innocent Boys or Veseria he immediately makes that

band better. He plays solo around town at the Gaslight Inn and the Melody Inn, but you've never gotten to hear him like this–channeling Jerry Lee Lewis. This should be a real treat. Hero Jr. as Johnny Cash: Hero Jr did the Elvis Birthday Bash a few years ago and have just exploded in the time since then. They've been proving their Rock n Roll bonafides by touring ceaselessly around the Midwest and east coast. Seeing them do a set peppered with their version of Johnny Cash Covers should be a once in a lifetime event that no Hero Jr, fan or Johnny Cash fan would dare miss. Bigger than Elvis as Elvis Presley: Bigger Than Elvis are well know to Indiana Rockabilly fans as they've been playing the hot, rockin’ rhythm and blues sound that made the Sun Records music so dangerous in the minds of 1950’s white America. The fact that the band features genuine rock stars like Danny (Roadkill) Thompson and Tufty Clough only adds to their coolness factor.

Back in 1996 I read a book entitled Papa: Hemmingway in Key West by James McLenden. I was living in Miami Beach at the time and I checked the book out at the smallest library I have ever seen. Below is a playful summary of that book:

Wrastling With Ernest Hemmingway Ernest Hemmingway wrastled with sentences. He would grab the sentence and begin to tear at it until it was nothing but bones. He would do this to sentence after sentance for four hours a day without sitting down. Then he would go to the bar and drink too much and fight people. Ernest Hemmingway was by nature a wrastler. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)

I Started to Write a Column and We Had a Blizzard... (Sunday January 5, 2014)

Every kid should have a blizzard. I remember the big snow of 1978. We had what seemed like MORE than 10 inches of snow. To a kid, it always seems to be MORE than less. What a nice trait. Today as I was out doing round two of shoveling what will be the "new" record setting snow day in Indiana, three of the neighbor boys were tromping through the back alley. One asked, "Hey, aren't you the news lady?" And I said, "Yes." He said, "Did you forecast this?" I laughed and said I had been telling people about it coming on the news but I wasn't responsible for it. He said disappointed, "Oh. I think it's really neat". How about that. And you know. It IS really neat. To appreciate it as a child. Or a dog. Another neighbor's new pup was anything but worried about the white stuff as he frolicked in their yard earlier in the afternoon. This day a year ago I had to put down my beloved dog Harp. His brother Guinness had gone before him in 2006. But sweet Harp was nearly 15 years old and despite the fact that he couldn't hear too well, or walk on his own, he still LOVED to go out in the snow. So as I listen to the silence of the snow except for the occasional snap of a frozen branch or THUD as a clump of snow falls to the ground, I will make an effort to appreciate it more. Like a kid or a dog. But like an adult I did find a useful purpose for the ice cold frozen water. It chilled a bottle of J Cuvee Brut in less than 15 minutes. Aah, some days it IS good to be a grown up! When I was a kid in 1978 my family and the neighbors gathered for dinner that night of the blizzard and shared food and laughter. I remember the adults enjoying some beverages and we kids just delighted that the adults seemed to be having so much fun. On this wintry night, I shared that bottle of J Cuvee with some of my fellow snow bound neighbors. It was a true winter warmer. J Cuvee Brut 20, California–crisp, refreshing. Notes of citrus and green apple on the nose and palate. Sensational on its own but better shared with a variety of neighborhood pot luck foods. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Jill and doggyboy Harp live in Warfleigh, where she also consults and teaches in an effort to keep the doggyboy’s treat jar filled with biscuits and her freezer stocked with ice cream. Send your questions and comments to Jill at jill@broadripplegazette.com

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 1 in the middle section of the top row which contains 7-8-9. The 1 in the left section of the top row eliminates the three spaces in the top-most row above the 8-9. The 1 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 8-9. The 1 in the center section eliminates the space above and below the 9. The only place left is below the 8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith

As the expression goes…. “it’s all over but the shout”. From a retailer’s standpoint every year gets more interesting. This past Christmas shopping season there were more options than ever of ways and places to spend your dollars. Black Friday morphed into Gray Thursday (or was it Brown Thursday?). Whichever, how long before December 25th is fair game? Maybe they’ll call that Green Christmas. The Mass Ave merchants teamed up to do “The Twelve Days of Mass Ave” which was a pop-up store in a vacant store front on Main Street in Carmel. The idea was to combine several businesses as one shop that would be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for four weekends to introduce the shoppers in Carmel to the Mass Ave District. Carmel businesses considered doing the same downtown Indy. Another concept is the boutique trucks that come to venues to sell their wares much like the food trucks do. What’s really taking hold is Amazon and online shopping. We heard about Cyber Monday. Then we heard about the future of delivery that might be done by drones. By the looks of it drones might be very real. UPS and Fed EX are under fire for not being able to keep up and getting packages delivered after Christmas. On Christmas Eve at 5:45 PM, we were headed east on 54th Street, just past College and passed a UPS truck. We commented that it was a shame he was still out there delivering while we were on our way to be with our family. Days later, on the news, I saw a Fed EX delivery man being interviewed. He said that at least he was able to get the job done but he was not able to be with his family. I know I speak for every store merchant who says thank you for shopping Small Business Saturday, which was the Saturday after Thanksgiving. For us it was so much fun. Everyone was in a festive mood and really understood the need and wanted to support small

independents. The message was out there. Shopping bags were donated by American Express as were welcome doormats. Statistics were posted: For each dollar you spend at an independent, locally owned business, approximately 80% goes back to the community versus about 35% from a franchise or chain — and 0% from the Internet. And… small local businesses are the largest employer nationally providing the most jobs to residents. Fully half of all private-sector jobs in the nation are in small business. So, while the internet is convenient, it lacks so much. It’s fun to get in the mood in small stores with Christmas music, gift wrap, good service and conversation. It is a threat to our community when our neighborhood shops close due to lack of business. Vacancies are created and our Avenues lose their charm and convenience. So thank you for making things bright and cheerful for your community by showing your support. Don’t stop because it is January. I show here a photo of a shopper at City Dogs Grocery who was surprised by Santa. She was more than willing to have her picture taken showing her support as she made her way with all her bags to many shops. As she discovered, there were bargains, discounts and gifts with purchase at small establishments as well as plenty of gratitude. Ho! Ho! Ho! Happy New Year! See you in the stores! Susan Smith is a life-long area resident and is the owner of City Dogs Grocery located at 52nd and College and at 884 Massachusetts Avenue. Cornell Avenue project adds "reverse angle parking”, skips street lights Have you noticed the revised parking procedures on the newly re-paved Cornell Avenue? You back into the spaces. The re-vamped parking was part of the repaving project. Reverse angle parking is now used on portions of the east side of Cornell Avenue from 65th to 66th Street. A recent visit to the location showed about half of the drivers had heeded the signage. A Bike Line employee said he liked the new system but wondered why no street lights were installed when they re-paved the street. He noted that it is cheaper to install street lights than hire new police officers to patrol the area. Indy’s murder rate now tops that of the 5 largest cities and on the rise The top 5 largest cities saw big drops in their murder rate in 2013 including an 18% decline in nearby Chicago. Not so in Indianapolis which reached an 8 year high and gave us the dubious distinction of having a higher murder rate than New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Philadelphia. All saw a drop in their murder rate of around 20%.

New Pan Asian restaurant, gay bar slated for the site of the former Ripple Inn A December 19 Indianapolis Star article reports that the Ripple Inn at the corner of Westfield and Winthrop will re-open as a pan-Asian restaurant on the main floor and gay bar upstairs making it the first gay bar in Broad Ripple. The Ripple Inn closed in 2012 and before that was a steak house. According to developer Bill Ficca, the matter is in the City permit stage and if all goes as planned the bar and restaurant will open in late spring. & Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

Here is the one-hundred fortieth installment:

The Traction Company ordinance part 2

All right and privileges granted by this ordinance are granted to the Grantee, its successors and assigns, for a term of fifty (50) years from the passage and acceptance of this ordinance. In the event of the discovery of any new power suitable for street or interurban railroad purposes, the Grantee, its successors and assigns, may use the same in the operation of said railroad, but this shall not authorize the use of steam motors or locomotives. SECTION 2. The track of said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall be laid in all cases in the center of the street, as far as practicable, except where a double track is contemplated being put down, and said track shall be so laid that the center line of the street shall be the center line between the tracks. When a double track is contemplated and only one track is laid, then said track may be laid only with the consent of the Board of Trustees of said town at any other place then the center of the street, and when it is so laid with such consent, it must be laid at such a distance from the center of the street as will make the center line between the two tracks when laid the center of the street, and so laid that when a double track is laid only so much space shall be left between the two tracks as is necessary for cars to pass in safety; and all side-tracks, switches, turn-outs and turntables shall be so constructed and maintained at all times as not any way to obstruct or impede the free use of said streets by the public, beyond the extent reasonable necessary for the purpose of the construction and operation of said railway. In all cases, said Grantee, its successors and assigns, so far and as soon as practicable, upon the completion change or repair of any of its tracks, or any portion thereof, shall replace any such street and make the same as good and passable for the general public as it was before such track or tracks were placed in position, changed or repaired, and this provision shall include alleys and street crossings intersected by such tracks. SECTION 3. Whenever said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall construct any part of its railway upon any street that has not been built or improved to established grade by said town, then any such track or tracks shall be built as near as practicable to the surface of the street, but when any street has been built to an established grade by the town, then and in every such case the said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall conform said tracks, switches, side-tracks and turn-outs to such established grade, and said town shall, upon reasonable notice at all times by said Grantee, its successors or assigns, require the Town Engineer to furnish such grade upon all streets, and, also, the center line of all streets. SECTION 4. A “T rail may be used in the construction of any of the tracks laid by said Grantee, its successors or assigns, and should any street or part of street be paved with brick, asphaltum, stone, concrete or other similar durable material, the track may be laid with rails at least five and three-fourths (5-3/4) inches in height, upon ties laid upon gravel or broken stone foundation, so that the top of the rail when laid shall be flush with the pavement on the outside; and said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall put in its track when a street is being paved so as not to unnecessarily delay the street contractor in his work, and all ties used in the construction of any tracks, side-tracks, turn-outs or switches shall be laid and at all times kept and maintained at such depth as not to be exposed above the surface of the street, or interfere in any way with the public travel, beyond the extent reasonably necessary for the purpose of constructing and operating said road. SECTION 5. Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, may take up or alter any track laid by it, but it shall put the vacated street in as good condition for travel for the general public as it was immediately before such track was taken up; and in case of laying, relaying or repairing its track, said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall put the street in as good condition as it was before said laying, relaying or repairing was done, and when said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall occupy any street or part of any street that has been improved by said town by gravelling the same, said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall repair all that portion of such street lying between the ends of the ties of its track, whenever the same becomes out of repair by reason of the maintenance and operation of said railway, and shall keep and at all times maintain the track in a condition so that the rails and ties of said track

shall not interfere with the public travel on said streets more that is reasonably necessary to operate said railroad, and not to interfere with crossing of or driving upon said tracks by vehicles, and when said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall occupy any street or part of any street that has been improved by said town by paving with stone, brick, asphaltum, concrete or other similar durable material, as said town may designate, said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall repair all that portion of such street lying between the rails of its tracks, with like durable material, whenever the same becomes out of repair by reason of the maintenance and operation of said railway, and on failure of said Grantee, its successors or assigns, to repair such part of such street after reasonable notice to it by said town so to do, then said town may make or cause to be made such repairs at the expense of Grantee, its successors or assigns.

EASY

by Laura Minor

Another year has ended (wow that year flew by!), and now we are on the horizon of 2014, and most of us with the best intentions of starting a new good habit, or breaking a bad one…or quite possibly both. However, come March, and unfortunately much of the steam has disappeared from these goals and it often leads to feelings of disappointment and failure, which can result in an unwillingness to make future attempts to change or begin behavior(s). But fear not! There are few strategies you can use to tackle the waning motivation and increase the odds of success. • First, define the “why” do I want to change this behavior, in a healthful approach. And revisit this answer in times that you may be struggling. For example, if it is to lose 20 pounds focus on how doing so will improve your health and give you more energy, rather than to be able to wear a size 4 jeans. • Make small yet gradual changes by setting weekly goals that are attainable and realistic. For example, if you are a couch potato and you want to run the mini, start by aiming to run a mile, then work your way up slowly to a 5K, etc. instead of focusing only on the 13.1 mile race. This way you will feel less overwhelmed and will celebrate your smaller goals along the way. • Use positive rather than negative language when thinking about your resolution. For example, rather than thinking "I can't be bothered going to the gym", think "I always feel so much better after going to the gym and I love that feeling." Emphasizing the benefit to you is far more motivating than focusing on the negative and self-defeating thoughts for not doing it as expected. • Find routine trigger points during your day for implementing your resolution, and plan ahead with how to tackle them when they arise. For example, if you can polish off a box of cookies in one sitting, think about that when you go to the grocery store. And I am not saying that you should never buy a cookie again. In this case I would recommend buying one or two cookies at the bakery instead of the entire box, so you still have what you enjoy without, well, eating the entire box (referring to point #2)! • React to your triggers by replacing them with a healthy alternative. Behavior does not simply go away…but it can gradually be replaced. For example, if after a stressful day at work you typically curl up on the couch with your favorite flavor of Ben N Jerry’s, plan to attend a yoga class or go on a 30 minute walk to clear your mind. • Vocalize your goal and be accountable. Tell someone you hold high in esteem about your plan. As a Personal Trainer, I have seen much success in clients that log a food journal, their workouts that they present to me and have regular weighins. Knowing someone is “watching” you in a respectful and healthy manner can be a huge key to your success and keep you moving forward. However be cautious on who you choose for this role. Be cautious of two types of situations: A “frenemy” who will try sabotage your efforts and downgrade your successes. And that includes those who are competitive with you. And/or A family member who you know will disapprove (such as someone who's proud of her cooking and is always wanting you to eat more). • Lastly, do not beat yourself up if you veer off your path. We cannot control everything in our life; we can only control how we react to it. So, if you have obstacles and struggles, step back and take a look at them and revisit the WHY… and if need be modify  Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter If I Had a Million Dollars Turning the calendar to a new year in Indiana usually comes amid short daylight hours, cold, and snow. So I like to stoke the fire, get a warm cup of coffee, and snuggle under an afghan to anticipate possibilities for the year ahead and take stock of the last year. This hibernation also lets me catch up on classic films. Watching How to Marry a Millionaire with Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, and Lauren Bacall again, I found myself wondering how the word “millionaire” became synonymous with the good life. As a child I watched the television show The Millionaire in which Michael Anthony, played by Marvin Miller, indulged in the pleasure of giving away one million dollars to persons he had never met., and I listened to the song I Found a Million Dollar Baby by Bing Crosby. More recent millionaire-titled entertainment comes to mind too, the acclaimed movie Slumdog Millionaire and the popular quiz TV show Who Wants to be a Millionaire. All these “millionaire” references connected to one of my favorite dinner parties last year. I asked guests to answer the question, “If you had could give away $1,000,000, who would you give it to (yourself excluded)?” Letting people dare to dream over dessert proved ever so interesting. The answers were quite enlightening: local nonprofits to global causes, relief for human suffering to rescue for helpless animals, causes in which folks were already involved to ones in which they would like to become active… all responses had one thing in common— gifts would make the world better. That simple question illuminated what was important to each of us. I think we came to appreciate our friendship more. That evening stays with me still. I had told my guests I would give my million to Canine Companions for Independence, a service dog program that provides exceptional dogs for people with disabilities not related to sight. That declaration changed my last year. While I didn’t have a million dollars to give, I could get started on the goal of giving what is possible for me. I reengaged with the Indy group of Canine Companions for Independence and started helping with fundraisers. I also initiated two new fundraisers — not my million dollar philanthropy dream but a start. The idea I want to leave with you is to ask yourself the question, “If I had a $1,000,000 to give away, what would I do?” I hope this will jump start your imagination and encourage you to step out and act on your values. We have all heard “For it is in giving that we receive.” Another favorite saying I have on my desk is “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us. What we have done for others and the world remains immortal,” a quote of Albert Pike. So as 2014 begins, I encourage you to ask yourself this simple question and then take action. Whether it is a small step or a huge gift, you can make a difference. A bit of trivia: The one million dollars given away on The Millionaire back in 1955 would be equal to $2,834,296 in 2013 dollars. Fire by the Monon, 6523 Ferguson Street [C4 on map], has a new owner, Joe Cominsky, Jr.

The signs are up along Cornell to instruct drivers to back in to most of the parking spots on the east side of the street. The signs indicated where the back-in parking begins and ends. It is not clear if cars will be ticketed for pulling straight in while traveling south. More information in Bill Malcolm’s Round The Ripple on page 16.
