Jorge Chalgub and his daughter, Dayana Mireles, co-own Taste of Havana, which is located at 815 Broad Ripple Avenue. Combining their Cuban culinary skills, they opened their restaurant last fall and have quickly attracted a loyal clientele. “My father and his family left Cuba in 1960. He worked in the restaurant business for over 20 years, then took a break for a few years and then decided to return to the restaurant industry. In Miami, he started out as a dishwasher and worked his way up to regional Research & Development Manager of Bennigans Restaurants. He designed a famous restaurant in Miami called Monty Trainers and brought a popular restaurant, La Carreta, to the Miami International Airport where he worked before moving to Indianapolis,” Ms. Mireles explained. “When I was a student at Florida International University, I started working at Bennigans Restaurant. They offered me a position in their management training program. I was division manager of a management company, Sirgany International. We used to manage the food and beverage area of the Miami International Airport. Miami is where the Cuban culture has been preserved. You see more of the Cuban culture there because it has been lost in Cuba itself,” Chalgub noted. “I was going to Indianapolis University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) and since my father left the trucking business, we thought about opening a Taste of Havana restaurant. We couldn’t find a good Cuban 815 Broad Ripple Ave [H4] sandwich in town, so we opened Taste of Havana,” she said. (317) 559-4369 “So far, we’re really happy with the www.tasteofhavanaindy.com results. We really did not have an initial idea of what we wanted to do, but when we saw the location in Broad Ripple, we had a concept of what we wanted to do. We try to make our sandwiches as authentic and as high quality as we can. We have been welcomed very much in the neighborhood. We have found out that there are a lot of people here from the South Florida area,” Chalgub added. “Our most popular and most traditional item is the Cuban sandwich that comes in three sizes. The Cuban is made of roast pork, sweet ham, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles. We roast our own pork and it is marinated heavily. Marinating the ingredients gives it that authentic taste. We have the roasters on all day long and we try to make it as authentic as we can, starting with the bread. The bread is one of

the most important parts. Cuban bread is made from a two day process. After each ingredient you put into the mix, you let it rise with the yeast. It’s such a soft bread and the lard gives it a flaky crust. Even though our cuisine is mostly non-vegetarian, we created a sandwich with roasted veggies,” Ms. Mireles mentioned. “Our vegetarian sandwich has zucchini, summer squash, eggplant, onions, peppers, tomatoes, basil, oregano, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. We notice that a lot of vegetarians like spicy foods, so we have a homemade chipotle sauce that a lot of people like. We make our black bean soup from scratch,” he described. Some of their other sandwiches include Elena Ruth (turkey, cream cheese, strawberry or raspberry preserves), Pan con Bistec (thin cut steak with grilled onions, potato sticks, lettuce, tomato and mayo), Sandwich con Chorizo (Spanish Chorizo – not Mexican, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard) and Havana Yacht Club (ham, turkey, Spanish Chorizo, bacon, Swiss cheese, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo). Taste of Havana’s desserts and other delicacies include Pork Wings (a quarter-pound

pork shank dipped in their homemade mojito), Pastelitos (a baked pastry with Guava, Guava & Cream Cheese, Cream Cheese or Strawberry & Cream Cheese filling) and Flan (a creamy caramel egg custard), Maduros (baked sweet plantain) and Black Bean Soup, available in a cup or bowl. Their root beer, called Ironbeer, is Cuba’s national beverage that dates back to 1917. It was first delivered to a cafeteria in Havana on a summer afternoon that year by a mule-drawn wooden wagon and contains a hint of island spices. Reviews by local media place Taste of Havana high on their menu. They were voted one of the top ten Indianapolis restaurants in 2013 by The Indianapolis Star and listed in the top 100 new bistros by Urban Spoon. In addition, they appear in the top four new eateries in Indianapolis by Yelp. This has generated a loyal customer following for those seeking distinctive ethnic food. “I’ve tried Cuban sandwiches from many places, but you can’t find a better Cuban sandwich than here,” said Alexander Limontes, a Miami native and personal injury attorney with Mitchell Hurst Dick & McNeils, LLC. In addition to Cuban music heard photo by Mario Morone in the restaurant, there are various Dayana Mireles and her father, Jorge Chalgub, photographs appearing around an co-own Taste of Havana. illustrated map of Cuba. This literally gives patrons a Taste of Havana, whose hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, Noon to 10 p.m. Sunday and closed on Monday. They can also cater your next event or business meeting when you place your order at 5594369. Their menu is available at: www.tasteofhavanaindy.com and at: https://www. facebook.com/pages/Taste-of-Havana/497054783703891 Taste of Havana could inspire a culinary democracy in Jorge Chalgub’s native Cuba, but one doesn’t have to travel there to enjoy their sandwiches, soups, beverages and desserts. He and his daughter, Dayana, await your visit at Indy’s “Little Havana” on Broad Ripple Avenue.

Neko Case with Thao & The Get Down Stay Down Thursday, January 30 Vogue Theater 6259 N. College Avenue 21+, doors 7:00, show 8:00, $26 presale, $28 day of show I totally have a musical crush on Neko Case. She’s a fabulous songwriter, funny as heck, and always puts on a great show. And she’s been nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award, for her record “The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You” in the Best Alternative Music Album category. The Grammy’s are January 26 in Los Angles so hopefully she’ll be on the Vogue stage as a Grammy winner and have the statue with her. If I won an award like that I’d carry it everywhere and sleep with it under my pillow.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Poetic Thoughts

by C.W. Pruitt II

The images are taken from the southwest corner of College and Westfield [H2 on map], just north of the recently opened parking garage, looking to the northeast down Broad Ripple Avenue. In 1952, looking down what was then 63rd Street, there was Clifford “Kick” Frazier’s Shell Station (Paul Walker, Broad Ripple history writer for the Gazette for many years, also owned that station) on the corner. Next to that to the east was Fletcher Trust Company (where my grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked) which later became American Fletcher, then Bank One and finally Chase. Further to the east in the photo is Guarantee Tire and Rubber Company and Kroger before it moved to Guilford. Note the electric overhead wires for the street cars. In the current day photo you can see Chase on the corner and to the east, BMO Harris Bank and Huntington Bank.

7 Jan 24 - Feb 6, 2014 * * * * * * * * * * * *

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Butler Tops Hinkle Fieldhouse Campaign Goal with $17.1 Million

Butler University has raised more than $17.156 million to preserve and update its landmark arena, Hinkle Fieldhouse. Total gifts and pledges to The Campaign for Hinkle Fieldhouse surpassed the $16 million public fundraising goal announced at the campaign’s launch in November 2012. Butler celebrated the final tally today during its men’s home basketball game against Marquette. The campaign has funded needed exterior maintenance on the 86-year-old fieldhouse, and ongoing interior renovations. New training and sports medicine facilities, locker rooms, and an academic center for student-athletes are under construction. Next summer, a new scoreboard and seating will be installed in Hinkle’s arena, along with other upgrades to enhance the spectator experience. “We are extremely grateful to the generous donors who have supported The Campaign for Hinkle Fieldhouse,” said Butler President James M. Danko. “Contributors told us they wanted to honor Hinkle’s historic place in our community, as well as Butler University’s continuing ascent as a nationally recognized leader in collegiate athletics and academics.” Athletic Director and Vice President Barry Collier said renovations completed and in the works at Hinkle are already improving Butler’s athletic recruiting efforts. “Prospective student-athletes see that Butler will provide them the outstanding facilities, physical training, and academic support they need to succeed, as well as an enthusiastic fan base,” he said. Butler demolished Hinkle’s long unused swimming pool last summer to make room for three levels of new classrooms, training facilities, locker rooms, and offices. The first two floors will contain a student-athlete center that will feature a strength-andconditioning room, a comprehensive sports medicine facility, and the University’s first dedicated space for academic mentoring of student-athletes. Some athletic offices will move to the new third-floor level, with all pool area construction to be completed this April. Also in April 2014, work begins to expand Hinkle’s men’s and women’s basketball suites. A video room in the men’s suite has been named for former Bulldog Gordon Hayward, honoring the Utah Jazz shooting guard’s major campaign gift. Simultaneously, Hinkle’s main gym and surrounding concourses will undergo several fan-friendly updates. Approximately 5,000 new chairback spectator seats will be installed from the arena floor level up to the walking track, providing more leg room and better accessibility to aisles. A new scoreboard will have video capability. Additional concession stands will be built on both main floor and upper levels, and all visitor restrooms will be upgraded and expanded. The Wildman Room, the fieldhouse’s hospitality suite, will be tripled in size. To allow for the final phase of construction, public access to most of the fieldhouse will be closed from April through the start of the Butler 2014-2015 basketball season in October. Additional upgrades to Hinkle funded by the campaign include: Brick exterior tuck-pointed, and 9,734 window panes replaced. Completed fall 2012 with a $700,000 grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service’s Saving America’s Treasures program, and $300,000 from the English, Bonter, Mitchell Foundation. Offices and concessions removed to widen the South Concourse in May 2013. Athletic Annex, 555 W. 52nd Street, remodeled to house the baseball, softball, golf, tennis, and track/cross country programs, completed December 2013. Current weight room remodeled as football facilities; scheduled completion by August 2014. Hinkle campaign gifts are still being accepted at www.hinklecampaign.com.

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)

Take This Snow and Shovel It... What does one do to beat the never ending snow fall blues? If you can’t get to a beach you might as well try the next best thing. Chocolate and Wine. The combination when done in moderation leaves one feeling warm and cozy with an inner glow. Perhaps it’s the resveratrol in the grape skins and cocoa beans. Or the endorphin uplift. Maybe both. But when faced with MORE inches of snow to shovel and no plane ticket ( or flight able to leave the airport many days) this may be the way to survive the days till Spring arrives. Endangered Species Chocolate is an Indianapolis-based chocolate company. The west side plant produces up to 65 thousand chocolate bars each DAY that are distributed across the country. A percentage of sales goes to protect a number of endangered animal species and habitats which are pictured on the wrappers of the chocolate bars. And when you unwrap the confection, the inside wrapper has details about the animal on the front. More “feel goodness” as you savor the 72% cocoa-based chocolate treat. Last week the company became the first in the country to develop a creme filled chocolate bar with non dairy ingredients. Sounds kind of strange but in fact it’s delicious. Natural flavors, high quality ingredients and “no gunk” combine to create a smooth, satisfying interior to that deep, rich, nutty, dark chocolate casing. Luscious on its own, a creme filled chocolate bar becomes even more of a special occasion when enjoyed with a small glass of wine or port. Some suggestions follow. Best news is you can now find these scrumptious bars at local Kroger stores. You can probably find some of the wines mentioned below there too or in other big box retail outlets. Let’s make beating the snow shovel blues as uncomplicated as possible. Now where did I put that snow shovel?? Raspberry Orange Creme–Enjoy with a rich Rhone red wine. These blends from the middle of France are made from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Cinsault. Rhone reds offer up aromas of wild flowers and red fruit and flavors of black raspberry, currant and kirsch. Some reputable and easy to find brands come from Paul Jaboulet Aine Parallel 45; Guigal Cotes du Rhone and M. Chapoutier.

Random Ripplings

Blueberry Vanilla Creme–How about ripe lush Cabernet Franc? The classic red wine grape is from France where its usually blended into Bordeaux wines or featured on its own from the Loire Valley and called chinon (shin-yawn). In the US you can find reputable offerings from both Washington State and California from Columbia Valley, Chateau Ste Michelle, Bogle. Cabernet Franc has softer tannins but bold rich aromas and flavors of black berry, blueberry, and notes of vanilla from oak aging.

There was some great live music in the basement of the Wellington Pub at the Corner Wine Bar at 6331 Guilford Avenue [G5 on map] on Sunday, January 19. Open Mic Night is held most Sundays at 6pm.

Lavendar Mint Creme–Select a Cabernet Sauvignon from California where the terroir often adds a hint of mint- Educated Guess, Rodney Strong, FerrariCarano, Clos Pegase, Heitz all offer Cabernet Sauvignon with notes of black cherry, mint and licorice in a variety of price points.

Above: Gary Wasson, host of Open Mic Night

Coconut Creme–Get an Indiana tropical wine fix by pairing a muscat canelli wine from Oliver, Huber, Buck Creek. The exotic notes of tropical fruit in the wine plus the smooth indulgent coconut in the chocolate bar will make you long for a hammock.

Below: Morning Voice Gary Reiter and Tiffany Bronnenberg

Almond Butter–Go for a sweet sparkling wine with this rich, toothsome treat. La Marca Prosecco, Barefoot Bubbly Moscato Spumante, Korbel Sweet Rose are all EZ drinkers. Sea Salt and Lime–White Port is the perfect match here. Hard to find but worth the look. Find it from Portugal producers Dow’s, Warres, Osborn. Alternate selection would be a semi sweet Riesling. Selections from Germany and New York offer great values and rich whites with aromas and flavors of apricots, citrus, peach and honey. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Jill and doggyboy Harp live in Warfleigh, where she also consults and teaches in an effort to keep the doggyboy’s treat jar filled with biscuits and her freezer stocked with ice cream. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 9 in the left section of the top row which contains 5-6-7-8. The 9 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces above and below the 7. The 9 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 5. The only place left is between the 6-8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Serving Broad Ripple Since 1979 We have a lot going on in the Ripple.

Businesses lax in snow removal Did you try walking along Broad Ripple Avenue after the recent snowstorm? Five days after the storm that dumped 11 inches on us on Sunday January 5, about half the sidewalk space along Broad Ripple Avenue had not been shoveled or plowed. Even a few business parking lots showed no sign of being shoveled, making both pedestrian and vehicle travel treacherous. This is despite a city ordinance that requires shoveling by the business owners. This picture taken Thursday, January 9 – 5 days after the storm – shows the problem. According to Adam Baker of the City’s Department of Code Enforcement, Section 431-106 (Clearing Snow and Ice From Sidewalks) of the Revised Code of the Consolidated City and County states it is the property owner’s responsibility to clear snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of, or adjacent to, their property. Brooke Klejnot of the BRVA also weighed in on the problem: “For the past several months the BRVA has proactively urged businesses to clear their sidewalks and parking lots.” You may report problems to the Mayor’s Action Center (327-4MAC) Speaking of the storm, see my picture of the ice island on the White River and the snowy but beautiful Monon Trail at www.broadripplegazette.com under “pictures from our articles”. a

Confusion reigns in finding a doctor in the Ripple who takes Obama care plans Trying to find a doctor who takes a Health Care Exchange Marketplace plan (aka Obama Care) offered by the 2 insurance companies offering exchange service can be a challenge. The 2 plans have very narrow networks of doctors and in some cases, hospitals. These limited networks differ from their regular plans. Staff at the front desk at one BR clinic told me they took both plans. However, a call to one insurance company revealed they were not accepting the limited network offered on the exchange plan by one carrier. Yet another BR clinic had no idea if they took either of the two plans. A call to the two insurance companies revealed that they did take both plans. In any event, if you don’t have health insurance, you must enroll for it by March 31 to avoid a penalty. See www.healthcare.gov or enroll over the phone at 800/318-2596. & Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

EASY

by Laura Minor

It has been a lovely winter so far, right readers (sarcasm)? And while it is a challenge to get outdoors or to the gym in the frigid temps, it is a great benefit to do so. In fact, exercising during the winter has a lot of benefits; perhaps even more so than at other times of the year. You use more energy in the winter. You expend more calories. And due to winter sports such as skiing, sledding and snowshoeing, you have other options for exercise. Trust me, I know that working out in the winter can be a motivational hurdle. The cold weather and shortage of daylight are tough enough. Plus, it’s so nice to stay in bed when you hear that wind howling. Even still, you know that it’s wiser to stay active during winter due to holiday weight gain and winter blues. If you opt to brave the cold, you need to know how to stay hydrated. Experts have found it is easier to get dehydrated in cooler temperatures. I personally struggle with this in fact. I am not proud to admit it, but I have a very low thirst mechanism. I “feel” my body requires a lot less fluids than others during and after workouts, yet I know that I have often found myself feeling dehydrated as a result. Here are some tips to prevent it from happening to you. Typically, working out gets you sweaty. Sweating sends signals to the brain that you need to hydrate. On the other hand, cold weather workouts can literally leave you cold. It’s harder to break into a sweat in cold weather. It may prevent you from perceiving that you need water. Therefore people are generally lax in drinking water this time of year and you may get dehydrated and not even know it. Immediate symptoms of dehydration include dry mouth, dark colored urine, muscle weakness, heightened heart rate, faster breathing, fatigue and headache. You may even develop a fever; or god forbid worse. This happens when you have a 5% fluid loss. You wouldn’t want to increase your fluid loss further. An interesting paragraph I found on www.sectionhiker.com site: Dehydration is accelerated in cold weather or at higher altitudes because the air we breathe is drier. Normally, people lose between one to two quarts of water a day via evaporation from the lungs. When we breathe, our bodies humidify dry air and heat it up to our body’s temperature, which is why your exhalations look like fog in cold weather. In cold weather, your body has to work harder to humidify the air you breathe and to warm it up, meaning that you need to drink more water and eat more if you are outdoors. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least 4 quarts of water a day, but many people will drink twice that under high exertion levels or over 10,000 feet of altitude. Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea (again a BIG flaw of mine. As every morning client of mine knows, I love my coffee; Do as I say on this article, not as I do!). Caffeine is a diuretic so it increases urine flow. It facilitates removal of fluids from the body. Diuretics make you more prone to dehydration. Even if you’re not thirsty, drink up. Make it a habit to hydrate every 2 hours. That way, you’ll be sure you’re getting enough fluids. There will be times, even during cold weather that you’ll get thirsty. Stop working out and quench your thirst. If you are outdoors, either carry your own fluids (such as a Fuel Belt or Camel Back) or go in an area that has fluid sources (I often go to Butler campus for example). Try not to go more than 20-30 minutes during exercise to take a drink break and of course have one to two cups before and after. Much to the disbelief of many, exercising outdoors this time of year is actually awesome! If you wear the right clothing, regardless of the temperatures, you can feel comfortable. Once you get going, you will be so glad that you did and will get a chance to take in all of the winter scenery! Just keep pumping the fluids  Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. I want you to try a Venery Game (rules at the end of the column). But first, what are terms of venery or nouns of assembly? Examples include a gaggle of geese, pride of lions, or school of fish. Usually these describe collective groups of animals. Starting back in the Middle Ages, hunting language evolved first in France then in England. Erudite, learned people applied the terms. Here are some venery terms coined through the years. Remember some date back to the 14th century and are still with us today. Colony of ants

School of fish

Cloud of bats

Troop of foxes

Swarm of bees

Gaggle of geese

Flock of birds

String of horses

Herd of buffalo

Mob of kangaroos

Clutter of cats

Pride of lions

Flock of chickens

Parliament of owls

Pack of dogs

Herd of pigs

Raft of ducks

Flock of sheep

Herd of elephants

School of whales

Writers and poets, wanting to play with words, have invented their own terms of venery for professions and people. They can be serious or humorous. Tabernacle of bakers

College of cardinals

Shuffle of bureaucrats

Melody of harpists

Shrivel of critics

Cast of actors

Decanter of deans

Host of angels

Conjunction of grammarians

Body of anatomists

The noun phrases often bring vivid images to mind. They are a trick of our language. Follow these suggestions if you want to try your creativity at making a collective noun: 1. Onomatopoeia - a word that phonetically imitates or suggests the source of the sound it describes (gaggle of geese) 2. Characteristic of the noun (leap of leopards) 3. Appearance (knot of toads, bouquet of pheasants) 4. Habitat (shoal of bass; nest of rabbits) 5. Comment, pro or con, reflecting the observer’s point of view (richness of martens, cowardice of curs) James Lipton, in his An Exaltation of Larks, 1968, lists a multitude of collective nouns, and the book is the most current ode to venery terms. Creation of labels has become a popular pastime since Mr. Lipton’s book appeared. From Mary Ann Madden’s competition page in New York magazine: “a riot of students; a peck of kisses, a mine of egotists, a host of parasites, a complement of sycophants, a range of ovens, a furrow of brows, a nun of your business, a lot of realtors, a knot of Windsors, a wagon of teetotalers.” So here is the game. Player 1: Declares a noun. Player 2: Responds to the noun by giving the collective noun phrase. Example: Player 1 says “Lark”. Player 2 says “An Exaltation of Larks.” Give nouns that challenge players to think of new combinations. You can also play in teams, Gaggle of Geese! giving team members one minute to come up with a venery term for a noun. Scoring: One Point for published, historic terms, and Five Points for new terms. You probably would do well to have a judge decide if the terms meet criteria. This game can be played anywhere and with no electronics or boards. It will tax imagination and creativity, providing great mental fun. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Church gives $11,000 to aid victims of human trafficking By Grant Buenger

A new church in Broad Ripple gave $11,000 to Julian Center to aid local victims of human trafficking. Lead Pastor of Radiate Church, Justin Bender, gave the check to Tracy McDaniel, Care Coordinator for the Julian Center, during service Sunday morning January 19th. Members of Radiate Church pledged to give their support on Nov 17th, after Tracy McDaniel shared the current reality of human trafficking in Indianapolis. She receives federal funding for foreign victims but no funding for domestic victims. Members of Radiate pledged to give to aid domestic victims. It was a Special Christmas Gift. Heartland Church also gave a significant matching gift to Radiate Church, also participating in the Special Christmas Gift. Radiate Church is a new church in Indianapolis. The church had their first service February 10th, 2012 and currently meets in the cafeteria at Broad Ripple Magnet High School, 1115 Broad Ripple Avenue [H9 on map], on Sunday mornings at 11am. Justin Bender is the Lead Pastor. Since pledging to the Christmas Gift, members of Radiate have also donated items in need and volunteered their time at The Julian Center. About Human Trafficking: Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery. There are currently over 27 million estimated victims in the world.
