Jorge Chalgub and his daughter, Dayana Mireles, co-own Taste of Havana, which is located at 815 Broad Ripple Avenue. Combining their Cuban culinary skills, they opened their restaurant last fall and have quickly attracted a loyal clientele. “My father and his family left Cuba in 1960. He worked in the restaurant business for over 20 years, then took a break for a few years and then decided to return to the restaurant industry. In Miami, he started out as a dishwasher and worked his way up to regional Research & Development Manager of Bennigans Restaurants. He designed a famous restaurant in Miami called Monty Trainers and brought a popular restaurant, La Carreta, to the Miami International Airport where he worked before moving to Indianapolis,” Ms. Mireles explained. “When I was a student at Florida International University, I started working at Bennigans Restaurant. They offered me a position in their management training program. I was division manager of a management company, Sirgany International. We used to manage the food and beverage area of the Miami International Airport. Miami is where the Cuban culture has been preserved. You see more of the Cuban culture there because it has been lost in Cuba itself,” Chalgub noted. “I was going to Indianapolis University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) and since my father left the trucking business, we thought about opening a Taste of Havana restaurant. We couldn’t find a good Cuban 815 Broad Ripple Ave [H4] sandwich in town, so we opened Taste of Havana,” she said. We really did not have an initial idea of what we wanted to do, but when we saw the location in Broad Ripple, we had a concept of what we wanted to do. We try to make our sandwiches as authentic and as high quality as we can. We have been welcomed very much in the neighborhood. We have found out that there are a lot of people here from the South Florida area,” Chalgub added. “Our most popular and most traditional item is the Cuban sandwich that comes in three sizes. The Cuban is made of roast pork, sweet ham, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles. We roast our own pork and it is marinated heavily. Marinating the ingredients gives it that authentic taste. We have the roasters on all day long and we try to make it as authentic as we can, starting with the bread. The bread is one of

the most important parts. Cuban bread is made from a two day process. After each ingredient you put into the mix, you let it rise with the yeast. It’s such a soft bread and the lard gives it a flaky crust. Even though our cuisine is mostly non-vegetarian, we created a sandwich with roasted veggies,” Ms. Mireles mentioned. “Our vegetarian sandwich has zucchini, summer squash, eggplant, onions, peppers, tomatoes, basil, oregano, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. We notice that a lot of vegetarians like spicy foods, so we have a homemade chipotle sauce that a lot of people like. We make our black bean soup from scratch,” he described. Some of their other sandwiches include Elena Ruth (turkey, cream cheese, strawberry or raspberry preserves), Pan con Bistec (thin cut steak with grilled onions, potato sticks, lettuce, tomato and mayo), Sandwich con Chorizo (Spanish Chorizo – not Mexican, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard) and Havana Yacht Club (ham, turkey, Spanish Chorizo, bacon, Swiss cheese, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo). They were voted one of the top ten Indianapolis restaurants in 2013 by The Indianapolis Star and listed in the top 100 new bistros by Urban Spoon. Broad Ripple Museum From time to time we will display items that have been donated or otherwise acquired to preserve the history of Broad Ripple. This “Now & Then” picture is composed of two shots of Broad Ripple from roughly the same location, taken about 60 years apart.

Poetic Thoughts

The images are taken from the southwest corner of College and Westfield [H2 on map], just north of the recently opened parking garage, looking to the northeast down Broad Ripple Avenue. In 1952, looking down what was then 63rd Street, there was Clifford “Kick” Frazier’s Shell Station (Paul Walker, Broad Ripple history writer for the Gazette for many years, also owned that station) on the corner. Next to that to the east was Fletcher Trust Company (where my grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked) which later became American Fletcher, then Bank One and finally Chase. Further to the east in the photo is Guarantee Tire and Rubber Company and Kroger before it moved to Guilford. Note the electric overhead wires for the street cars. In the current day photo you can see Chase on the corner and to the east, BMO Harris Bank and Huntington Bank.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 9 in the left section of the top row which contains 5-6-7-8. The 9 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces above and below the 7. The 9 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 5. The only place left is between the 6-8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. Businesses lax in snow removal Did you try walking along Broad Ripple Avenue after the recent snowstorm? Five days after the storm that dumped 11 inches on us on Sunday January 5, about half the sidewalk space along Broad Ripple Avenue had not been shoveled or plowed. Even a few business parking lots showed no sign of being shoveled, making both pedestrian and vehicle travel treacherous. This is despite a city ordinance that requires shoveling by the business owners. This picture taken Thursday, January 9 – 5 days after the storm – shows the problem. According to Adam Baker of the City’s Department of Code Enforcement, Section 431-106 (Clearing Snow and Ice From Sidewalks) of the Revised Code of the Consolidated City and County states it is the property owner’s responsibility to clear snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of, or adjacent to, their property. Confusion reigns in finding a doctor in the Ripple who takes Obama care plans Trying to find a doctor who takes a Health Care Exchange Marketplace plan (aka Obama Care) offered by the 2 insurance companies offering exchange service can be a challenge. The 2 plans have very narrow networks of doctors and in some cases, hospitals. These limited networks differ from their regular plans. Staff at the front desk at one BR clinic told me they took both plans. However, a call to one insurance company revealed they were not accepting the limited network offered on the exchange plan by one carrier. Yet another BR clinic had no idea if they took either of the two plans. A call to the two insurance companies revealed that they did take both plans. In any event, if you don’t have health insurance, you must enroll for it by March 31 to avoid a penalty. See www.healthcare.gov or enroll over the phone at 800/318-2596. Broad Ripple Park hosts fair for those wanting to be instructors The Broad Ripple Park instructor fair will be held on Saturday, February 1st from 9am to noon. This is a chance for people to come the center and see if Indy Parks and them can team up and provide the class to the public. Managers representing cities all across the city will be present to help out. (The Parks Department uses third party providers to teach their classes.) The store was the only book store in Broad Ripple and one of the few independent book stores left in the city. Indiana School for the Blind Bell Tower celebrates 75 years Our neighbor at 75th and College has a Bell Tower which is the iconic symbol at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, was built in 1938. Over the last 75 years, the neighbors and ISBVI school family have enjoyed the music and chimes that resonate each hour from the tower. Over the holiday season, the Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation (IBCF) offered the opportunity to capture this ISBVI symbol with a specially designed ornament. The proceeds from this sale benefitted IBCF and help Indiana’s children who are blind and visually impaired by financially supporting and promoting the work of the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. • Freshman Jessica Halsmer won the City Swim Meet in the 100 backstroke

event at the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, December 21st. Trailing a former club teammate for most of the race, Jessica finished strongly and won the event with a time of 1:02.51 just .38 ahead of her second place competitor. In her first event, Jessica narrowly finished second in the 200 Freestyle. Congratulations to Jessica and her coaches, Mrs. F. and Coach Scott, who are not coincidentally her grandmother and uncle. Jessica’s goal is also to make it to the state meet in the same event in February and she very much appreciates the support of all her teammates.

& Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

Here is the one-hundred forty-first installment:

The Traction Company ordinance part 3 - permission to carry a bag SECTION 6. Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, are hereby granted the right to construct, maintain and operate said railway on such route and over and across all bridges and railway tracks on said route, and the right of way along its tracks as fully as said Board of Trustees of said town can grant the same for uses and purposes expressed in this ordinance. The cars of said railroad shall be entitled to the track against all vehicles and persons, and whenever a car meets or overtakes a vehicle, person or persons, such vehicle, person or persons shall give way to the car, after sounding alarm by ringing gong or blowing whistle, except that funeral processions, and the fire department of said town while on duty in going to or coming from fires, shall have precedence over the cars of Grantee. SECTION 7. It shall be lawful for Grantee, its successors or assigns, to make reasonable rules governing the conduct of its business and the operation of its railroad, and for the government of passengers on its cars, and for the conductor or other employe of Grantee to eject from its cars any person violating any such rules, or acting in a rude, insolent or disorderly manner, in or about such cars or on the platform thereof. SECTION 8. Any person may carry on the lap any hand bag or other parcel that can be carried on the lap without inconvenience to other passengers. Children under six (6) years of age, carried on the lap by any parent or other person in charge of them, shall ride free. All trunks, bundles, boxes or other articles carried upon the seat, floor or platform of any passenger car, may be carried at the option of said Grantee, its successors or assigns, upon such terms and conditions as it may prescribe. Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall have the right to transport over its said railroad passengers, mail, express matter and freight, and said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall regulate the fare or compensation to be charged therefor. SECTION 9. Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall set their poles for stringing their wires against the curb line, outside of such curb. Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, may use iron, cedar or spruce poles, or some other equally good material. Said poles, in setting, to be adjusted, to give free access to property. If it becomes necessary at any time to have any of said poles moved, the Board of Trustees of said town may cause the same to be moved at the expense of Grantee, its successors or assigns, and in setting the same, the poles shall be well filled around and tamped and set and maintained at a perpendicular height at all times, as nearly as practicable, and so as not to obstruct any water-way and to conform to other works and paving where they are placed. The guy poles at turning points shall be well anchored. The guy wires shall not come within less than ten (10) feet of the surface of the ground, and so as not to obstruct free passage or travel. All cross wires shall be suspended not less than eighteen (18) feet above the surface of the ground, except where necessary to pass under bridges or other obstructions. The poles and lines herein contemplated shall be so constructed, maintained and operated as not to interfere with the use and operation of any existing telegraph, telephone, fire alarm or electric light wires in said town, beyond the extent reasonably necessary for the construction and operation of such railroad line. SECTION 10. Said company, its successors or assigns, shall equip all its lines operated by electricity with good and modern cars, provided with proper appliances for operating the same, so as to provide for the comfort and safety of its passengers. SECTION 11. Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall be liable for and save the town of Broad Ripple harmless from all legal and consequential damages which may be sustained by any person or their property by reason of carelessness or negligence or want of ordinary care arising from the misconduct of any of its agents, servants or employes in the course of their employment in the construction and operation of said street and interurban railroad, and said company, its successors or assigns, shall hold the town of Broad Ripple harmless from any loss or damage to any of

It has been a lovely winter so far, right readers (sarcasm)? And while it is a challenge to get outdoors or to the gym in the frigid temps, it is a great benefit to do so. In fact, exercising during the winter has a lot of benefits; perhaps even more so than at other times of the year. You use more energy in the winter. You expend more calories. And due to winter sports such as skiing, sledding and snowshoeing, you have other options for exercise. Trust me, I know that working out in the winter can be a motivational hurdle. The cold weather and shortage of daylight are tough enough. Plus, it’s so nice to stay in bed when you hear that wind howling. Even still, you know that it’s wiser to stay active during winter due to holiday weight gain and winter blues. If you opt to brave the cold, you need to know how to stay hydrated. Experts have found it is easier to get dehydrated in cooler temperatures. I personally struggle with this in fact. I am not proud to admit it, but I have a very low thirst mechanism. I “feel” my body requires a lot less fluids than others during and after workouts, yet I know that I have often found myself feeling dehydrated as a result. Here are some tips to prevent it from happening to you. Typically, working out gets you sweaty. Sweating sends signals to the brain that you need to hydrate. On the other hand, cold weather workouts can literally leave you cold. It’s harder to break into a sweat in cold weather. It may prevent you from perceiving that you need water. Therefore people are generally lax in drinking water this time of year and you may get dehydrated and not even know it. Immediate symptoms of dehydration include dry mouth, dark colored urine, muscle weakness, heightened heart rate, faster breathing, fatigue and headache. You may even develop a fever; or god forbid worse. This happens when you have a 5% fluid loss. You wouldn’t want to increase your fluid loss further. An interesting paragraph I found on www.sectionhiker.com site: Dehydration is accelerated in cold weather or at higher altitudes because the air we breathe is drier. Normally, people lose between one to two quarts of water a day via evaporation from the lungs. When we breathe, our bodies humidify dry air and heat it up to our body’s temperature, which is why your exhalations look like fog in cold weather. In cold weather, your body has to work harder to humidify the air you breathe and to warm it up, meaning that you need to drink more water and eat more if you are outdoors. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least 4 quarts of water a day, but many people will drink twice that under high exertion levels or over 10,000 feet of altitude. Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea (again a BIG flaw of mine. As every morning client of mine knows, I love my coffee; Do as I say on this article, not as I do!). Caffeine is a diuretic so it increases urine flow. It facilitates removal of fluids from the body. Diuretics make you more prone to dehydration. Even if you’re not thirsty, drink up. Make it a habit to hydrate every 2 hours. That way, you’ll be sure you’re getting enough fluids. There will be times, even during cold weather that you’ll get thirsty. Stop working out and quench your thirst. If you are outdoors, either carry your own fluids (such as a Fuel Belt or Camel Back) or go in an area that has fluid sources (I often go to Butler campus for example). Try not to go more than 20-30 minutes during exercise to take a drink break and of course have one to two cups before and after. Much to the disbelief of many, exercising outdoors this time of year is actually awesome! If you wear the right clothing, regardless of the temperatures, you can feel comfortable. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Put Brains to Work It’s word game time, but not Scrabble, not Words with Friends, and not crossword puzzles. I want you to try a Venery Game (rules at the end of the column). But first, what are terms of venery or nouns of assembly? Examples include a gaggle of geese, pride of lions, or school of fish. Usually these describe collective groups of animals. Starting back in the Middle Ages, hunting language evolved first in France then in England. Erudite, learned people applied the terms. Here are some venery terms coined through the years. Remember some date back to the 14th century and are still with us today. Colony of ants

Writers and poets, wanting to play with words, have invented their own terms of venery for professions and people. They can be serious or humorous. Tabernacle of bakers

The noun phrases often bring vivid images to mind. They are a trick of our language. Follow these suggestions if you want to try your creativity at making a collective noun: 1. Onomatopoeia - a word that phonetically imitates or suggests the source of the sound it describes (gaggle of geese) 2. Characteristic of the noun (leap of leopards) 3. Appearance (knot of toads, bouquet of pheasants) 4. Habitat (shoal of bass; nest of rabbits) 5. Comment, pro or con, reflecting the observer’s point of view (richness of martens, cowardice of curs) James Lipton, in his An Exaltation of Larks, 1968, lists a multitude of collective nouns, and the book is the most current ode to venery terms. Creation of labels has become a popular pastime since Mr. Lipton’s book appeared. From Mary Ann Madden’s competition page in New York magazine: “a riot of students; a peck of kisses, a mine of egotists, a host of parasites, a complement of sycophants, a range of ovens, a furrow of brows, a nun of your business, a lot of realtors, a knot of Windsors, a wagon of teetotalers.” So here is the game. Player 1: Declares a noun. Player 2: Responds to the noun by giving the collective noun phrase. Example: Player 1 says “Lark”. Player 2 says “An Exaltation of Larks.” Give nouns that challenge players to think of new combinations. You can also play in teams, Gaggle of Geese! giving team members one minute to come up with a venery term for a noun. Scoring: One Point for published, historic terms, and Five Points for new terms. You probably would do well to have a judge decide if the terms meet criteria. This game can be played anywhere and with no electronics or boards. Church gives $11,000 to aid victims of human trafficking By Grant Buenger

A new church in Broad Ripple gave $11,000 to Julian Center to aid local victims of human trafficking. Lead Pastor of Radiate Church, Justin Bender, gave the check to Tracy McDaniel, Care Coordinator for the Julian Center, during service Sunday morning January 19th. Members of Radiate Church pledged to give their support on Nov 17th, after Tracy McDaniel shared the current reality of human trafficking in Indianapolis. She receives federal funding for foreign victims but no funding for domestic victims. Members of Radiate pledged to give to aid domestic victims. It was a Special Christmas Gift. Heartland Church also gave a significant matching gift to Radiate Church, also participating in the Special Christmas Gift. Radiate Church is a new church in Indianapolis. The church had their first service February 10th, 2012 and currently meets in the cafeteria at Broad Ripple Magnet High School, 1115 Broad Ripple Avenue [H9 on map], on Sunday mornings at 11am. Justin Bender is the Lead Pastor. Since pledging to the Christmas Gift, members of Radiate have also donated items in need and volunteered their time at The Julian Center.
