Inspire - genius unleashed at 65th and Ferguson By Mario Morone

Ellen Robinson is the catalyst for Inspire, located at 6503 Ferguson Street. She recently described the entrepreneurial path that guided her there. “I have an English Journalism degree and worked in the corporate sector and have always had a desire to help people. I went back to school and earned a SPEA (Masters in Public and Environmental) degree from Indiana University and thought about social work, but really felt I was meant for behind-the-scenes non-profit work,” she mentioned. “My first non-profit job was at Big Brothers and Big Sisters in fund raising. I worked for about 12 years in the non-profit sector and was most recently the Executive Director of the Lawrence Township School Foundation (LTSF). About seven years ago, I went through a leadership program in which I got to create visions for my life. One of my visions was to inspire people through creative expression. I see now that this was the thought seed that has grown into Inspire today. What I have learned from classes, many mentors and teachers and personal life experience is that words are very powerful. Our thoughts are like seeds that we plant…they are energy. And whenever we put energy out, it comes back to us as opportunities, or doorways, to step into the thought or vision they we have created. The process is one of setting our intention and then letting go of what we think needs to happen next…it is letting go Inspire of the mental constructs that can sometimes 6503 Ferguson Street [C4] confine us. I knew these words were important and I would rush home to record them on the computer before they disappeared from my consciousness. A little while later I was working with a career coach who encouraged me to paint. I was resistant at first, but once I started painting, a feeling of great freedom came over me. I had a mental construct that ‘I don’t paint.’ Once I let that go, I opened myself to new possibilities. My daughter, who was two years old at the time, was painting in our sunroom when my sister happened to be there and noticed she was painting a faux finish. I did not even know what a faux finish was and my sister explained it is a layer on top of a layer. January zoning issues at BRVA meeting By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The January meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee was held at the Indianapolis Art Center Ruth Lilly Library on January 28. Committee chair Jim Holland called the meeting to order at 6:06pm. There were only two items on the agenda. 1) 912 E. Westfield Boulevard / 6335 Guilford Avenue - Petition 2013-DV3-038 - Hearing date February 11. David Gilman representing Chris Mill regarding a variance of development standards of the commercial zoning ordinance to provide for a lounge/nightclub, with a 675 sq. foot, 2nd level patio (200 sq. feet permitted) and to provide for 9 parking spaces, with substandard adequate maneuvering area. This request is from The Red Room (restaurant/bar above Chelsea’s) to allow for the addition of a 2nd floor outdoor lounge above the next door shop to the east, Lucky B. This proposal was first presented for feedback at the November meeting. The added deck area would be built upon new steel beams that would rest on the sidewalls of the building below, so as to not exert any forces on the roof. The deck would be 675 sq. ft. with seating for about 45 people. In addition to the existing 21 Red Room parking spots at Chelsea’s, 9 additional

See ZONING pg. 3 those I connected with a printer (Steve Moore of Delp Printing) who told me that he would create digital samples free of charge if I returned to have them color printed,” Ms. Robinson explained. Her creative discovery led to new possibilities. “I went to (former Broad Ripple business) Ginko and they put out my (card) samples to be sold that very day. They wanted to see my original canvases, too and began to sell those for me as well. After that, I got my cards into seven or eight stores locally. At the LTSF, I felt my purpose there was complete and it was time for me to move on. I created and conducted Inspire Your Life workshops in my home in early 2012 and received feedback that these were valuable to the participants. I feel as if I’ve received a gift through this and really want to share what I’ve learned. One class in particular through the United Centers for Spiritual Living gave me the logical tools with which to share with others, what I had known and experienced. We are all inherently creative because at any time, we can choose a new thought that can change the trajectory of our lives. This is a cornerstone concept for my workshops as well as Inspire as a whole,” she reflected.

spots would be arranged for north of Bambu, the lot to the east of Lucky B. The Metropolitan Development staff is in support of the proposal. The BRVA Land Use committee voted to support it. 2) 6542 Westfield Boulevard - Petition 2014-CZN-800 / 2014-CVR-800 - Hearing date February 13. David Gilman for Stenz Construction regarding the rezoning of 1.6 acres from the C-S (FF) to the C-S (FF) district to provide for retail uses, with outdoor seating and a variance of development standards of the commercial zoning ordinance to provide for a zero-foot rear transitional yard (15 feet required). This request is for an 8200 sq. ft. retail addition to Howald Heating, Air Condition and Plumbing. The design is a one-story retail center extending to the south along the Monon Trail. A large portion of this center would be for an expansion of CrossFit, already located on the Monon Trail in the existing Howald building. There was a long discussion by the committee members asking for changes to be considered to make the new building fit with the newly-adopted Envision Broad Ripple plan. Along the trail, that plan calls for buildings with small footprints, 50 feet from the centerline of the trail and with a minimum height of 20 feet. To achieve this, the architects would have to push the Monon side of the building to the east, make the building narrower and add a second floor. These changes would add cost and would not be suitable for the CrossFit use and not desirable for retail tenants. While the committee was generally in favor of this proposal, a decision was delayed until the February meeting to wait until the final drawings are complete. The petitioner agreed to seek a 2-week continuance with the Hearing Examiner, moving that hearing to Feb 27. The next public meeting of the committee is scheduled for Tuesday, February 25 at 6pm at the Art Center.

Greetings from Ballangarry, Co. Limerick, Ireland. While the sunshine is limited, it is a good 50 degrees warmer here than Indianapolis as I write this. Not only can you see the ground, but the grass is green! I’ve been lucky enough to stand on the farm where my great-grandfather lived and meet charming relatives. The first week of my holiday has been spent chasing down relatives and enjoying a lovely thatched-roof cottage and losing track of what day of the week it is. Next week will be spent touring and seeking out music. The big music news here is that Garth Brooks sold out three Dublin shows in 90 minutes – 240,000 tickets! I’ll have more to report next time.

I think we’ll all Pete Seeger fans whether we realize it or not. Pete’s death especially effected the music community. Geoff Davis has gathered a group of musicians to celebrate Pete’s music and share joy, hope, love, peace and sorrow. The event will be in the spirit of Pete Seeger. Each musician will play a few songs and share thoughts about Pete and his influence. The full line up was still being formed at press time; the concert will open with sing-alongs. The show will be an intimate gathering with the musicians sitting among the fans in an acoustic setting. We concert will end with the Moontown Pickle Stompers leading a community sing. It sounds like a lovely and fitting tribute to Pete Seeger.

I popped in one Saturday night recently (which may or may not have occurred while I was waitressing at the Red Key) and was immediately charmed with the spot. Proprietors, Janneane and Benjamin Blevins, have over 300 titles on hand ranging from fashion, literature, design, food, architecture, art, theory, and politics. Everything, really. Their vision for “PRINTtEXT is a shop, salon, archive, and study. Browsing is mandatory. Discourse is expected. Inspire’s clients originate from all walks of life. “I work with young people. An 11year old celebrated her birthday here and I worked with a retiree on certain aspects of her life. Her vision was to find the creator that was lost and is still there. I create this safe space where people can be who they are. I want people to have the freedom to shine. It’s healthy to occasionally examine our beliefs to see if they truly are our beliefs, or if they are mental constructs handed down from our family and/or society. If we determine that the belief no longer holds true for us, it is okay to let it go,” she emphasized. Her inspiration to help others goes beyond categorization. “Labels don’t define me. I see myself as an intrinsic living guide, learning to live from the inside out - a guide and a catalyst. I work with people individually and in groups, both in the studio and on location. I don’t teach people to paint, but provide the canvass for them to express the creativity that is inherent in all of us. The Inspire Studio is available to book for team building, workshops and/or Girls’ Night Out. A woman who does local team building recently had a group spend the day at Inspire. There was an open house in late November featuring a holiday market with local artists, designers and creators. On New Year’s Eve, individuals painted and enjoyed a glass of champagne,” she recalled. Inspire’s retail area provides a creative outlet for local and regional artists. “My sister, Marianne Brown, makes pottery and Ryan VanHoy, who is my cousin, whose studio is in Fountain Square, also has pottery available for sale in the store. Greenwood, Indiana native Brandi Cottingham has whimsical paintings for sale,” she added. Among Ms. Robinson’s artistic finds are some works from Z-Pots and V-Goods. Inspire Store and Studio hours are Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and by chance just look for the sign inviting you in to Paint, Shop and Be Inspired. Individuals can show up during these hours to shop as well as paint a canvas for just $15. A recent I LOVE February Party occurred February 1, which precedes Inspire’s first anniversary opening of March 1st. “I do workshops and classes. Joni Hansen is my mentor and teacher in Nashville, Indiana. I do numerology one on one with people and in workshops. Painting du Coeur (French for “Painting of the heart”) is a 6-week class that runs through February 12. On March 4, a Painting Mandalas, Journey of Self Discovery, class begins. We’re going to be painting Mandalas (Sanskrit meaning “A sacred circle.”) A mandala can be as simple as a child’s circle. There are 12 stages of mandala development that mirrors the stages of spiritual evolvement. I also create custom workshops for individuals, work teams, teachers or groups of friends,” she described. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. I had the honor of meeting this group at Plump’s last shot. Kate asked me to sing “Back Home Again In Indiana” for their scavenger hunt!! She sent me this letter.... They had a very full schedule as you can see..... Hi Frog! We met a few weeks ago at Plump’s Last Shot! I was with a team of 8th grade girls basketball players from the Chicago area. I promised you I would send you a short summary of what we were doing in Indiana that weekend. Sorry it has taken me so long to get this to you. If you are still able to write up something for the Broad Ripple Gazette, we’d be thrilled. If not, we still had a wonderful time, and I am really grateful to you for singing for our girls, and otherwise making us feel welcome. Thanks. Hoosiers Quest 2014. Our girls are 8th graders living in and around Hinsdale, IL. They play for the Hinsdale Inferno, which is a feeder team for Hinsdale Central High School. Our club, Hinsdale Inferno, has taken teams on a similar kind of Hoosiers trip before. Most of the other teams are boys basketball teams. Here are some of the cool things we did: • watched the movie “Hoosiers” together as a team • watched clips of the actual Milan 1954 Indiana state championship game • played in a basketball tournament in West Lafayette, Indiana, not far from where I grew up, playing Indiana high school basketball myself • went to a Butler Women’s Basketball Game at Hinkle Fieldhouse • Practiced at the Hoosier Gym in Knightstown, IN • Dined at Plump’s Last Shot in Broad Ripple • Toured the NCAA Hall of Champions • Completed a “Hoosiers”/Indiana/Basketball-related scavenger hunt at the Circle Centre Mall (the girls had to do fun things like interview locals to find out who was the leading scorer on the Pacers, who is the President of Basketball Operations, find a local to sing “Back Home Again in Indiana”) Every place we went, we met neat people, humble and welcoming, who made us excited to be taking part in a tour of Indiana basketball legends. Plump’s Last Shot was no different. All wonderful people. We had the time of our lives. According to Bill Roberts of the Post, the Legion is looking for a new location as the current building was too large. Ericksen, 66, Indianapolis, passed way January 20, 2014 He was an active member and leader of the American Legion Post #34 where he served as past commander for three years, and as finance officer. Riverwalk closes, to re-open April 1 as the Willows Event Center The Riverwalk is now the Willows Event Center at 6729 Westfield Boulevard has closed until April 1 when it will be re-named The Willows. According to Mary Anne Hawkins, they are remodeling the facility including adding an outdoor wedding garden. A separate building, known as the Lodge, is also being re-done. The facility can hold 600 and is used for weddings and other special events. It is owned by Crystal Catering which also owns The Fountains in Carmel, Crane Bay, and the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Chantal Gatlin, Jeremy Anderson, Jessica Thomas, Jessyca Woods and Broad Ripple Orchestra A received Gold medals in Division I which qualifies them to go on to State competition! Fellow Rockets! Your Wrestling team competed in the Sectional Tournament this past Saturday. The Team finished in 6th place, competing with only 8 Wrestlers! Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith On Tuesday morning, January 14th, I sat at my computer and opened emails. It was snowing to beat the band and it was beautiful. I am not a wimp and I love it (or did at that time…fast forward a few weeks and not so much). At any rate, the stage was set for an email sent by Patty Spitler, co-host of Pet Pals TV, a Saturday morning TV show. This email was her recent blog opening with “Check out the discussion, Pet Pals TV is going to Alaska to see the Iditarod!”. Well that got my attention on so many levels. I am intrigued with the Iditarod dog sled race that runs 1,000 miles from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. The photos that accompanied the blog were breathtaking. There were descriptions of “The Land of the Midnight Sun” and the historic village that nestles at the base of Mt. McKinley, North America’s tallest peak. There were pictures of dogs and mushers and spectacular glaciers. The trip that was described is available to all to accompany Patty and her co-host Paul Poteet. It is provided by Classic Escapes and is a week-long adventure leaving February 26th. Aside from touring the marvelous landscape of Alaska it is all about the race. The tour includes options of going to the kennel to meet mushers and sled dogs, learn the ropes and hear stories from the trail, experience a 40-minute sled ride, take a snowshoe walk on the trail and make s’mores at a campfire (a 15-hour day). Also included is attendance at the annual Musher’s Banquet where mushers draw their starting numbers from a boot. The banquet draws a crowd of nearly 2,000 spectators. As I read the email and the links to Classic Escapes itinerary I daydreamed. Wouldn’t it be grand? Maybe I could write it off as a business expense. (I represent at least three sponsors of the Iditarod by carrying their products in my stores.) I started thinking about what I would wear. I would take my trusty hooded parka and Cuddle Duds (a brand of thermal underwear). I envisioned the basic, no-frills accommodations that were described without TV and internet and were a part of the more remote nights out. I longed for the nature and the escape. I was ready to sign up right then! I thought long and hard but I procrastinated. That procrastination changed everything. We had our own dose of Alaska. It was warmer in Fairbanks than Indianapolis. I started thinking of real business trips and trade shows coming in March to Orlando and July to Las Vegas where it is warm. As I said, the Iditarod has fascinated me. In February, 2011 I wrote about it in this column. Here is some of that article with statistics from that year: Since 1973 the Iditarod sled dog race has been held on the first Saturday in March. Starting last Fall the Eagle Pack bags of dog food that have been coming in to my store have been promoting the event and running a contest for a lucky winner to have all expenses paid to attend “The Last Great Race on Earth”. I am proud to say Eagle Pack food is made in Mishawaka Indiana and is a sponsor for the sled dogs. As the official dog food sponsor Eagle Pack will supply food along the trail and will dedicate funds to the health and care of the Iditarod dogs. Another company I do business with is Muttluks. They are the brand of dog boots worn by the Iditarod dogs (a requirement). I have sold more than a few these last weeks. Such an extreme sport requires extremely quality products. It has been said that the greatest athlete on the planet is the Iditarod sled dog. This race begins in Anchorage ending in Nome and covers 1,049 miles (significant for the 49th state). It is the most extreme and beautiful terrain: across mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra and windswept coastline. The Iditarod Trail, now a National Historic Trail, had its beginnings as a mail and supply route to the inland communities: mail and supplies went in and gold came out. In 1925, part of the Iditarod Trail became a life saving highway for epidemic-stricken Nome. Diphtheria threatened and serum had to be brought in by dog mushers and their faithful hard-driving dogs in a 5 ½ day relay stretch called “Serum Run”. Early races were over 30 days long but now are between 10 and 17 with the world’s record being 8 days and 22 hours. More people have reached the summit of Mt. Everest than have finished the race. Dogs and mushers must have a passion to run. It’s different than cross country skiing because it is about spending your life with your dogs. One musher said “when the team is built I have one big dog with 16 tails, 64 legs, 1 sled and myself and during the race I have no other concerns than the dog immediately in front of me”. The object of the race is to determine which musher and dogs cover the race in the shortest time under their own power without the aid of others. That is determined by the nose of the first dog to cross the finish line. One year the race was won by one second. During the race 45 vets are at 25 mandatory checkpoints. There is a required minimum of 8 hours at two different checkpoints and 24 hours at a third to insure dogs and mushers are properly rested.

I watched an interview with the 2010 winner, Lance Mackey, and was amazed. His father won the Iditarod in 1978 and his brother won in 1983. It was his legacy. In 2001 he was diagnosed with cancer. He was determined to run and in 2002 attempted but was scratched half way due to his illness. In 2005 he won the Yukon Quest, another 1,000 mile race, in his rookie year repeating that race as a winner in 2006, 2007, and 2008 making him the only 4 time Yukon champ in history. In 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 he was the 4 time back to back champion of the Iditarod. The Yukon and the Iditarod are only weeks apart! March 5th is this year’s race and it has the following registrants: 47 male and 15 women. 46 are from Alaska, 8 from other states and 8 from other countries. For fun keep your eye on Marshall Newton and his sled team. He is from Jamaica (of all places) and ran his rookie year last year under the training of Lance Mackey. His country is excited about him and apparently so is Jimmy Buffet and Margaritaville as they are his sponsors. And we think we’re having trouble adjusting to all this ice and cold! Disney has some winter movies along this theme to curl up and watch during this frigid season: White Fang, Snow Buddies, Snow Dogs and Eight Below. On Comet! On Cupid! On Donner and Blitzen! Oops. A Different Approach… Do you suffer from low back pain? If you do, you are one of the growing numbers of adults in the U.S. who suffers from this sometimes debilitating condition. A recent statistic stated that 8 out of 10 Americans will experience back pain. Those who experience back pain miss an average of 3.98 days of work and require 4.68 treatments, but only 61.15% see improvement. Today I would like to share one new idea that will help you think of your back pain in a different way. The problem is NOT your back!! (Unless you have had a traumatic injury) Your pain is coming from tension caused by a different part of the body. I am going to discuss one type of back pain that is felt across the low back, along the belt line of your pants. This pain is typical of those of you who sit at a desk at work or sleep on your side with your legs curled up. Figure 1 shows what ideal posture looks like. Figure 2 shows adaptively shortened stomach and hip flexor muscles while sitting. Now we can start to see where the tension is coming from. When we sit the stomach muscles are shortened. If the stomach muscles shorten the opposite Figure 1 action must take place on the back muscles. The back muscles are lengthened and still responsible to stabilize the spine. This creates the sensation of weakness in the back. In this scenario the pain itself is coming from referred pain from a trigger point in the stomach.(figure 4) A trigger point is created by muscles that are too short and tight. These tight muscles restrict blood flow, creating a trigger point. (figure 3) Figure 2 In my 12 year career as a Neuromuscular Therapist, I believe that the reason for this alarming number of back pain complaints coupled with low recovery rates is due to misinformation given to the client. We should stretch our short tight muscles instead of where you feel pain. We should be stretching and treating the stomach muscles rather than the back. You don’t want to bring your knees to your chest as this shortens your abdominal muscles even more and stretches your back even further. When the stomach is restored to its ideal length the tension is eliminated from the back. Figure 3 To recap the new and different way to avoid back pain or to recover more quickly and completely is by not thinking of your back as the problem. We all must find where the restrictions are in our bodies that are creating the tension you feel as back pain. A skilled therapist can help determine where your restrictions lie. If you have back pain that is felt across the belt line of your pant the most likely restriction is in your abdominal muscles. These trigger points refer pain to your lower back. www.brva.org Changes to Biz Div in 2014

In an effort to better leverage resources, the BRVA has decided to adjust the programming for Business Division, more commonly known as Biz Div. The goal of Biz Div is to help businesses stay informed about important issues impacting the Village, to connect businesses to opportunities and resources, and to engage businesses in the community. The mission hasn’t changed. In fact, we believe the proposed programmatic changes will help us better deliver the mission to Village businesses. Biz Div will not hold monthly meetings and distribute monthly eBlasts in 2014. Instead, it will coordinate quarterly cocktail

hour gatherings and distribute a quarterly eBlast. Each eBlast will feature several resources to help businesses find efficiencies and attract and retain customers. The reduced meeting frequency allows us to focus on building relationships with businesses in the Village. We will rededicate our energy to meeting businesses face-to-face, to proactively welcoming new businesses and connecting with established businesses. We are eager to get started! Ron and Michelle Miller took ownership of Cork + Cracker, located at 2126 E. Broad Ripple Avenue, on November 26, 2012. Cork + Cracker features over 500 wines, 250 of which are less than $15, wine accessories, gifts, beer, and locallysourced food products from The Best Chocolate, Endangered Species, Hoosier Mama, Mile Square Coffee, New Fangled Confections, and Smoking Goose.

Current Activities in Broad Ripple Village BRVA Appreciation Party Set for Feb 11!

To honor, and celebrate, the many contributions of our members and volunteers, the Broad Ripple Village Association is holding a Member & Volunteer Appreciation Party on Tuesday, February 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Broad Ripple Tavern, 745 Broad Ripple Avenue. The event, for BRVA members over 21, will feature free food, drinks, and games. There will be door prizes and live entertainment during the two-hour event. BRVA Gathers Neighborhood Businesses to Discuss Cooperative Marketing Campaign

The Broad Ripple Village Cultural District brand has not had a facelift since its original launch in 2005. The BRVA hosted a discussion with area businesses and Broad Ripple-based marketing firms to discuss how to reinvigorate the brand and attract more visitors to the area. Over 30 people attended and contributed their ideas. The BRVA sees this as the first of several meetings to engage area businesses regarding a cooperative marketing campaign to showcase the cultural district and neighborhood. Since Ron and Michelle took ownership, they expanded the wine by more than 100 labels. They hope to continue to expand food options in the shop to further provide a convenient shopping experience for customers. Looking around the shop, it is easy to see that the vast selection makes it a great one-stop-shop. Customers will find unique gift items alongside carefully selected artisan cheese, crackers, charcuterie and dips to enjoy with their wine. Need help picking out the perfect wine? Ask Ron or Justin (the shops only employee), they are there to help and love to walk customers through the buying process! You can see Ron and Michelle at one of Cork + Cracker’s special events. Four times a year, they coordinate a Grand Tasting that is held at Bark Tudor next door. The next tasting is on February 22. No RSVP required. 60 wines and several local food products will be available to taste. Admission is only $7. Ron and Michelle believe in community spirit and in everyone helping each other out. That’s why they so fully support selling locally-sourced food in the shop and support the BRVA. Collaborating with other small businesses and the BRVA helps connect them to customers and the community they are so proud to be a part of.
