Ben and Janneane Blevins are writing a new chapter at PRINTtEXT, a periodicals shop they co-own at 652 East 52nd Street that opened on Black Friday. They recently opened the book on their shared interest in publications. “It was probably a growing fascination. We would spend time at Barnes & Noble for the past five or six years, building our personal collection. One of the distinguishing things about our bookstore is that we sell back issues along with the most recent editions. We always have the current issues and an archive that we are currently building. Local artist Stephen Garstang designed our space. We decided to get away from the magazine racks and provide an atmosphere like you’re walking into someone’s living room which makes people feel at home. We hope they’re divergent just like the store’s publication space. We’re keeping an archive and tracking down first issues that are collectibles as well, like a recent first issue of Address. We have a limited edition in stock that you can’t find anywhere else. We have culturally, relevant thoughtful publications. They’re not all highbrow…there are many accessible publications in here,” Janneane explained. Ben reflected, “We have always collected print stuff, like different periodicals and we really enjoyed reading them when we traveled. It used to be better PRINTtEXT when Northside News was at 54th 652 East 52nd St [G4] and College and Borders with their (317) 910-8203 periodical collection. Opening PRINTtEXT was something that www.PrintText.co we had in the back or minds the past couple of years. There was a space that opened in this area that the owner told us about and we decided to try it. We’ve got all sorts of periodicals, everything from art, architecture, food and literature to fashion and political theory. We have a listing of publications on our website, www.PrintText.co, which has the whole gamut of what we have in the store. Everything in the store is purchasable. The one thing is that online retailers like Amazon haven’t figured out yet is how to sell periodicals. We buy these publications in small print runs,” he explained. PRINTtEXT combines a shop, salon, archive and study with a diversity of 300 + print publications they offer customers. Their website states: “Browsing is mandatory. Discourse is expected. Disagreements are encouraged. Opinions are appreciated. Community is obligatory.” Questions about their collection can be answered by calling 910-8203. Future events are planned in the shop as well. “We don’t have an exact date set up, but we are going to do a couple of events a month. We have a projector and folks come in and discuss things they know about. There’s a publication for everything that somebody can discuss,” Ben said. “We hope to host events from salon literary nights and discussions to screening a movie,” Janneane added. The February public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s Land Use and Development committee was held on the 25th in the Indianapolis Art Center’s Ruth Lilly Library at 6pm. There were around 20 in attendance. Three items were on the agenda. 1) 834 E. 64th Street, Greg Ginrich regarding a 210 type alcoholic beverage permit for Hilliard James, LLC d/b/a Sangrita, located at 834 E. 64th Street to serve beer, wine and liquor, on premise only. Hearing, April 7, 2014 before the Marion County Alcoholic Beverage Board. This was the second time Sangrita has presented. The location is the old Greek’s Pizzeria on 64th Street. Sangrita would be a family restaurant that would completely renovate the property, including finishing the sidewalks. The board voted to support this petition. 2) 6542 Westfield Boulevard, David Gilman for Stenz Construction regarding the rezoning of 1.6 acres from the C-S (FF) to the C-S (FF) district to provide for retail uses, with outdoor seating and a variance of development standards of the commercial zoning ordinance to provide for a zero-foot rear transitional yard (15 feet required) Petition #2014-CZN-800 / 2014-CVR800. Agreed to hearing continuance to Thursday, February 27, 2014 before the Metropolitan Development Commission. This was the second time this petition has been presented. The project is to expand the Cross Fit fitness center and to add retails spots at Howald Heating and Cooling at 65th and Westfield Boulevard. Several of the suggestions from the last meeting were incorporated in the design. The final plans were not available at the meeting, so the committee decided to table the issue and to vote electronically once the plans are published. 3) 6265 Broadway Street, Tad Lupton representing Greg Stoll, owner of the property to explain redevelopment of the lot. Looking for information, ideas, and guidelines to update this section of Broad Ripple. This item was for information only. The petitioner was looking for feedback on a project to raze the home behind CVS, at Broadway and the canal, to construct a 40 foot tall, three to five unit residence. The committee was split on thinking it fit fairly well with the CVS and future Whole Foods to the east, and the parking garage to the south, and on thinking it had no place in that established neighborhood.

Their Labrador, Huckleberry, provides canine companionship in the store and recognizes repeat customers. The Blevins also produce a local publication. “Ben and I are both involved in Pattern Magazine that started in 2010. It’s an artifact that you can put into people’s hands, but it’s not until they look through the magazine and see something accessible being produced by their neighbors and friends. We’ve been building great relationships with the City of Indianapolis and Downtown, Inc. by attracting a fashion community as a vital component,” Janneane mentioned. Pattern is currently being distributed internationally. Their e-mail letter, Indy Spectator, is in hibernation. “It was a kind of volunteer staff of people who loved Indianapolis that were excited about what was going on. PRINTtEXT, like retail neighbor Luna Music at 52nd & College Avenue, is part of growing movement in traditional media staging a comeback. “I think there’s certainly a trend with tangible artifacts. My daytime job is with a design agency that works with technology companies. I love reading on-line just as much as off-line publications. I think that people who enjoy browsing and shopping at Luna Music and Little Super tend to appreciate well-designed, physical products — objects that you can touch, use and share,” Janneane noted. Ben added, “We appreciate digital just as much as print. We kind of stumbled upon it by accident and it became one of our favorites. It’s an educational museum and archive containing anything from video game design to fashion, music and on-line design,” Janneane added. Ben and Janneane Blevins are turning the page in a rejuvenated slow news renaissance at PRINTtEXT where browsing is mandatory.

“Every once in a while”.....I was shoveling the snow from the sidewalks outside of Broad Ripple Village properties when we received the 5 1/2 inches of snow Valentine’s Day. You remember, the day when the weather man said 1-2 inches? Anyway, I was just about to fall out from total exhaustion trying to keep up with Mother Nature. I had used up my first and second wind. I was giving out fast when I looked up at this pole and got my third wind immediately. Even though this graffiti is illegal and I do NOT sanction it by any means ......Every once in a while, a few well placed words make all of the difference in the world to some one !

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. Central Indiana Wilderness Club to Present FREE Backpacking Seminar
The Central Indiana Wilderness Club will present a FREE backpacking class, which is open to the public, on Saturday, March 8th from 9:30 AM until 1:30 PM. The location is the Holliday Park Nature Center (6363 Spring Mill Rd., Indianapolis, IN). Topics will include selecting pieces of gear (hiking boots, sleeping bags, tents, packs, clothing and accessories), learning about “minimalist” backpacking, how to “pack” a backpack, trail safety, water treatment, stoves and cooking, first aid, staying comfortable, and backcountry ethics such as “leave no trace”. Ever wanted to try backpacking but didn’t know how to get started or where to go? This class is perfect for both novice and experienced backpackers, and a good place for anyone to pick up and share new ideas. The Central Indiana Wilderness Club has been offering affordable backpacking trips (as well as other adventures) since 1982. For over 20 years the club has presented its annual backpacking class. Harvard Professor to Deliver Phi Beta Kappa Lecture at Butler University
Harvard Professor of African and African-American Studies and of Anthropology John Comaroff will deliver the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Lecture, “How Europe and America are Evolving Towards Africa,” at 6:30 p.m. March 27 in Pharmacy Building Room 150. Admission is free and open to the public without tickets. “The Global South” has become shorthand for the world of non-European, postcolonial peoples. Synonymous with uncertain development, unorthodox economies, failed states, and nations fraught with corruption, poverty, incivility, and strife, it is that half of the world about which the “Global North” spins theories. Rarely is it seen as a source of explanation for world historical events. Yet, as many nation-states of the northern hemisphere experience increasing fiscal meltdown, state privatization, corruption, creeping poverty, ethnic conflict, xenophobia, problems of law and order, and other perceived crises, it seems as though they are evolving southward, Comaroff contends, in both positive and problematic ways. This lecture takes on key questions, in particular asking how we might understand the world anew with this theory developed in the south, which gives an ironic twist to the evolutionary pathways long assumed by social scientists. He earned his bachelor of arts from University of Cape Town, South Africa, and his doctorate from the London School of Economics. Lambs, Lions & Lent March came in like a lamb. And a lion. The afternoon of March 1st I was dressed in a sweater, work gloves and my LL Bean boots, hauling fallen branches from my still mostly snow covered yard. The morning of March 2nd I was out in those boots again but also in my heavy winter coat, ski gloves and hat shoveling what was now a very snow covered driveway and sidewalk. The irony of the “lion and lamb” came as vision in my head of a snickering tiger wearing a wooly vest as he whistled his way through my yard snickering at me thinking that Saturday I thought Spring was here and Sunday I knew it was not. Thinking about the image made me wonder about wine bottles. Is what you see on the outside truly telling of what’s on the inside? Two recent samplings follow suit with weather. A bit of both. Lovely, elegant, inviting labels wrapped around a bottle filled with powerful aromas and flavors. And wines that on the outside looked so simple and easy going yet when tasted they opened into delicious food wines. And both made me crave summer grilled foods with which to pair them. 2013 Starborough Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough New Zealand–eye appealing label with dreamy drawing of a starfish on a metallic olive green background. It conjures up images of the beach and hammocks and short sleeve shirts. Inside was zingy, tangy, welcoming juice with aromas and flavors of lemongrass and lime. I envisioned a glass with grilled shrimp or vegetable kabobs from the grill. The 2009 Chateau Cote Montpezat, Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux had the same affect. An elegant, simple label. Very French. Inside a dry, meaty, red wine with grippy leathery tannins and notes of soy, bacon, eucalyptus and black cherry. This with a steak or cut of prime rib would be a match made in meteorological heaven. (I could see that sheep clothed tiger smacking his lips again but THIS time he wants to be my friend if I am serving a bottle of this and a rare piece of meat.) Lent? If you’re giving up wine for Lent but still want a tasty beverage with a bit of fizz and fermentation you might try Reed’s Culture Club Kombucha drinks. I sampled the Coconut Water Lime which could be a swap for Sauvignon Blanc or Chenin Blanc with its lively citrus flavors. The Cranberry Ginger has similar red fruit and spice as found in Grenache, Tempranillo or Pinot Noir. Kombucha is a cultured beverage that originated in Northern China. “Cultured” as in enzymes and bacteria. GOOD bacteria that’s blended with oolong and yerba mate teas plus natural juices. In case you’ve been snowed under (oh wait...) probiotics and enzymes are good news for your tummy and digestive system. Also found in yogurt and recently recommended for baby formula to help calm colicky babies. And wine lovers trying to give up their pleasure for 40 days. Jill A. friendly event kept the public actively engaged in projects and exhibits designed to educate people on a wide array of environmental topics. Attendees learned about renewable energy sources, waterways, nature, recycling and more. Forty-seven community partners and many underwriting sponsors from all over the state presented almost 60 activities to make learning accessible, engaging and fun. The JCC requires that Earth Day partners provide an activity, as opposed to a passive exhibit, to enhance the learning experience. For example, JCC Earth Day visitors constructed mini-greenhouses, participated in an orienteering exercise in the woods, made crafts from recycled materials and took advantage of free e-recycling of old computers and electronics. A sampling of community partners includes Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Center for Urban Ecology at Butler University, Indiana Recycling Coalition, Ivy Tech, Purdue University Solar Racing Team, Circle City Rain Barrels and Indy Parks. Some of Indy’s favorite food trucks were on the premises, as well as non-food vendors with “green and sustainable” items for sale. As in the previous two years, the Earth Day Celebration will begin with a community tree planting on the JCC campus in partnership with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. KIB has helped the JCC plant more than 20 trees at the previous two Earth Day Celebrations and at an event in 2008 with the JCC’s preschool families. New this year, the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana are offering an official badge to girls who attend the JCC’s Earth Day Community Celebration. The event will count toward “It’s Your Planet-Love It” journey. Cost for the badge is $3. Plans for this year’s Earth Day Celebration at the JCC are well underway for the event on Sunday, April 27, 1-4 pm at the Arthur M. Glick JCC. The event kicks
Radiate Church - One Year Anniversary by Matthew VanTryon
Photo booths and the electric slide are not ordinary happenings at Radiate Church in Broad Ripple. Make no mistake, this was no ordinary Sunday. Sunday, Feb. 9 marked the one-year anniversary for Radiate Church, which meets in Broad Ripple Magnet High School. The church has grown substantially since its beginning, and has close to 150 attendees on a weekly basis. They moved to Broad Ripple in June. One of the first families to attend Radiate was the Horsfall family. JT and Beth moved from Cincinnati to Indianapolis with lead pastor Justin Bender. They had the not-so-small dream of starting a church. Beth said that despite extensive planning, there was still some doubt about whether or not people would come. That concern was alleviated quickly. “The people we invited soon invited more people,” Horsfall said. “It multiplied organically.” Radiate has embraced Broad Ripple as its home, and is making strides in the community. This spring, the congregation raised over $11,000 for the Julian Center in Indianapolis, who “provides shelter and counseling to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and survivors of child sexual abuse,” according to its website. Radiate serves because Jesus served, according to lead pastor Justin Bender. “He came to serve. As followers, we serve,” Bender said. “We love to serve because that’s who we are and that’s who Jesus was.” Bender believes in the power of practicing what is preached on Sunday every day of the week. “I don’t want to tell you what I believe, I want to show you what I believe,” Bender said. The effects of the mission have been wide-reaching. Young people are taking notice. One college student attended Radiate when services began a year ago. Now, 30-40 college students from a variety of campuses call Radiate home on a weekly basis. One of those students is Jeremy Kauffman, a second-year pharmacy student at Butler University. Kauffman has been attending the church since September after hearing about it through a campus Bible study. Radiate feels like home for Kauffman, regardless of what has happened during the course of the week. “[The congregation] truly does care about you,” Kauffman said. “You walk in and you feel at home, regardless of the week you’ve had or the burdens you’re carrying.” Kauffman described Radiate as authentic, echoing Bender’s sentiment that the church takes the message out the doors and into the community. “They’re fulfilling what their goal is,” said Kauffman. “Not only are they teaching and preaching, they’re actually doing it.” It comes down to love, according to Horsfall. “People need love,” Horsfall said. “It’s important as a church to not only love emotionally love but to love practically. It’s an obedience thing.” Each week at the end of the service, the congregation stands and recites the same phrase: “Let what we do in here fill the streets out there.” A year in, Radiate is making an impact inside and outside of the walls of the church. Studio 49 Fitness hosted the Change of Heart event presented by SELF magazine on February 22 at the 49th and Penn studio. The event raised awareness for heart disease in women and the importance of heart health through classes, booths and demonstrations throughout the day.

Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith Last November I wrote about the 50th anniversary of the explosion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Halloween night, October 31, 1963. I shared my personal story of the event from the experience of my brother, who was a young firefighter, the 7th to arrive on the scene from the pool of emergency responders from as far away as Terre Haute and Richmond. I sparked memories for many readers as you commented to me later. I thought you might be interested in what followed after the article. For those of you who missed that article let me recap by saying the explosion was caused by a propane tank in the storage pit under the seats in the southeastern corner of the coliseum. 4,300 people were attending Holiday on Ice, an annual ice show. People, seats, concrete, steel and debris
every Halloween is a reminder of that horrible night. I learned of it later when Cindy Hoye, Executive Director of the Indiana State Fairgrounds, contacted me in November in response to the article I had written here. She provided pictures of the ceremony. She invited me to come to her office where she would take me on a tour of the construction. When I met her she introduced me to others and with hard hat and safety glasses we went across the street from her office to see the renovation underway. I am not going to go into details here. I will say that they are months ahead of schedule and I believe the unveiling will be next month. I will leave the media to share with you the wonders they have done. I don’t want to be a spoiler. It is beautiful and remains historic while being updated to our modern needs. Cindy has been with the fairgrounds for over 25 years. She did not experience the explosion but she did experience the recent collapse of the outdoor concert stage. I came to learn and understand how such disasters impact from within. I don’t think people realized how such an experience would impact the first responders. In such times our hearts seem to pour out to the injured and the families. On my visit I learned how much a family is within the employment of the fairgrounds. I saw tears well up in their eyes when they discussed their most recent disaster. As a group, they rallied together and are working through healing. Last month a family of six died in a house fire in Indianapolis and there was much focus on the grief experienced by the firefighters. When touring the reconstruction I did not have my bearings so I asked them to point to the corner of the building that exploded 50 years ago. They showed me where in the front lobby they are positioning the memorial plaque. I am grateful for the kindness and compassion that was expressed to me on behalf of my brother and all of the first responders–the ones that were and are silently in the background of healing. On this visit I went back in time to concerts, circuses and ice skating with my grandfather. He was a big deal figure skater there who helped shape the skating clubs. New memories will be made now and the excitement of what is to come and the pride of pulling it all together was so evident as I was given this private showing. I know they can’t wait to be interviewed and televised as they show this stunning renovation to the people of Indiana. They have worked very hard and with great attention to historical detail. were propelled loosening walls and flooring which caved creating a 50 foot wide crater down to the storage pit. Spectators were hurled into the crater or flown out onto the ice. Bodies were trapped and mangled. A second explosion created a fireball as high as the rafters. People were severely burned. The cold ice became a morgue as bodies were covered with blankets. Seventy-four people died and many hundred were injured. The newspapers reported that it was the worst disaster in city history, possibly state history. My story was about how the city moved on with little memorial or tribute to the victims. On the 40th anniversary a plaque was installed to commemorate the tragedy. It had been a hard recovery for my brother who needed closure. He came back home to Indianapolis to see the plaque and found disappointment. He felt that it was not historic with details and it was too generic. He thought it should be in a prominent place not in some hallway corner. He was saddened that this was the best our city could do and that it took 40 years to do it. But move forward 10 more years to last Halloween. Last October 31st the rain and thunderstorms were so severe that Trick-or-Treat was postponed by a day. Sadly, the 50th anniversary memorial that was planned was rained on. It had to be held outdoors because the Coliseum was under renovation and gutted. It passed quietly by me or I would have attended because

Random Ripplings The students pictured to the right recently served as Indiana House Pages during the 2014 session of the Indiana General Assembly. The Indiana House of Representatives offers an unparalleled opportunity for students between the ages of 13 and 18 to visit the Statehouse and experience a full day of legislative activity. Pages are able to see how the state legislature works firsthand in a behind-the-scenes tour. They will get to work alongside legislators, legislative assistants and interns. On session days, pages experience how a bill becomes a law as they watch legislators on the House floor debate issues. Students also have the chance to tour the statehouse, see where the Governor works and observe floor sessions of the House, Senate and Supreme Court chambers. The Indiana House Page Program is an educational way for students to gain a better understanding of the lawmaking process by meeting their State Representative and witnessing how laws are made firsthand. It is an exciting experience that comes highly recommended.

I hear so many talk about it being empty, I decided to Random Ripple it. Usage of the garage will go up if the neighborhood decides to establish a parking permit system.

& Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.
Here is the one-hundred forty-third installment: Annual report and part one of a plea from the voters. Lists of citizens like this one, which will be continued in the next installment, are of great interest for family history, showing the residency of ancestors at a specific date in history. The list shows several people from my family, including Hessongs and Foleys. James Watts owned the pharmacy that be came Lobraico’s and is Chelsea’s today. Brenneman lived in the large house where Kroger is now. Broad Ripple Ind. Apr. 7th 1903 The Broad of Trustees of the Town of Broad Ripple met in regular session. All members present. The minutes of Mch 3rd 1903 and the minutes of the special meeting of Apr 3rd 1903 were read and approved and orders drawn on the Treasurer for the respective amounts Geo. B. Melick $30.10 Standard Oil Co. $6.88 The Treasurer made his annual report showing the balance on hand May 14th 1902 $184.15 The receipts for the year including the balance $1254.86 The total expenditures for the year to be $816.66 Leaving the balance on hand to date and on hand in the Treasury to be $443.66 and on motion of M. Whitsel, seconded by I.U. White the report was accepted and approved. The regular motion and second the Board adjourned. CL Kirk Clerk CW Silvey President Broad Ripple Ind. Apr. 18th 1903 The Board of Trustees of the Town of Broad Ripple Indiana met in Special Session on the call of the President C.W. Silvey who stated the purpose of the meeting to be to take action on the Petitions for and against the question of Submitting the Franchise granted to the Indianapolis Northern Traction Co. for a Referendum Vote. And the clerk presented a petition which had been filed with him asking for a Referendum Vote on the Franchise of the Indianapolis Northern Traction Co. and which is as follows

To the Board of Trustees of the Town of Broad Ripple Marion County Ind. Charles W. Silvey, President C. L. Kirk, Clerk Gentlemen: We, the undersigned voters of the town of Broad Ripple, Marion County, Ind. Bring more than Forty Percent (40%) of the voters of such town hereby demand a referendum of an ordinance entitled “An Ordinance granting to Indianapolis Northern traction Company, its successors and assigns, authority to construct, maintain and operate an interurban street railroad over, along and upon certain streets in the town of Broad Ripple, in the County of Marion and State of Indiana.” Which ordinance according to its terms was ordained and established by the Board of Trustees of the town of Broad Ripple, Marion County, Ind. The 3rd day of April, 1903, and signed by Charles W. Silvey, President, attested by C.L. Kirk Clerk, having impressed thereof the seal of the Town of Broad Ripple, Indiana. We hereby certify that we are legal voters of the town of Broad Ripple, Indiana, only qualified as such voters and that we have in person hereto attached our signatures and we ask that this matter be submitted to the voters of the town of Broad Ripple at the coming election, under the provisions of an act entitled “An act vesting a right in the voters of any incorporated town in the State of Indiana to, by petition, refer any ordinance, agreement, contract, or measure enacted or proposed by the Board of Trustees of any incorporated town of this State to a vote of the voters of such town, and to reject the same by ballot; to proscribe the manner of holding such election, and provide punishment for all offenders against the provisions of this act and declaring and emergency.” Which act was approved March 2nd, 1899, and appears in the act of 1899 of the Legislature of Indiana as Chapter ___ on page 216 of said acts. And we ask that this be referred to the voters of the said town for the following reasons, among others:1. That the rights of the citizens of the said town are not in any manner protected in said ordinance 2. That there is no provision compelling the said street railroad Company to stop cars within the limits of the town of Broad Ripple. 3. That there is no provision fixing the fares to be charged by said Company either in the town of Broad Ripple or from the town of Broad Ripple to the city of Indianapolis, or any other place. 4. For the reason that the said ordinance permits the said Company to run its trains through the residence part of the town of Broad Ripple at a speed of twenty (20) miles per hour, which speed is excessively dangerous to the lives of the citizens of the said town, in the opinion of your petitioners.
5. For the further reason that the said ordinance does not provide for the paving of the part of the street occupied by the said railroad Company at the expense of said Company. 6. For the further reason that the said ordinance does not provide for any special licence for or tax upon the said street railroad for the use of its right of way within said town. 7. For the further reason that so much of said right of way as is on Shelby Street and Light Avenue is now already occupied by a double track of the present Broad Ripple Traction Company’s line of street railroad, and to place another line of street railroad upon the same streets would be dangerous to the people of said town. Beauty is in the “I” of the Beholder As a child, I remember there were several times that an adult (not necessarily my parents) commented negatively either about their weight and/or appearance. And I also remember there were a few times that it was directed toward my own weight and/or appearance, of which I never (or ever) forgot. Although, I know the comments weren’t malicious and intended to do harm, as an overweight child they were especially damaging for me; and sadly this isn’t an uncommon story. And, in my opinion, today’s world presents a heightened risk for low self-esteem and eating disorders, especially due to constant social media, with readily available images of perfect bodies (that are often airbrushed), and the continuing desire to attain perfection. Hearing comments from adults and peers can clearly be harmful enough, but the addition of these various other influences can exponentially add to the feelings of low self-worth. During the recent National Eating Disorders Week (Feb 23rd-Mar 1st), there were several interesting articles about how a parent’s behavior can impact a child’s body image. The overwhelming message is for parents (and all adults in my opinion) to lead by example. Unfortunately, parents can forget how their actions and words can impact the lives of their children; Especially when it involves body image and eating behavior. Parents need to be mindful of how they eat, their relationship with their own bodies, and the potential impact on their kids. And specifically, a mother’s attitude regarding body image significantly influences how children view themselves. I am not a mother myself, but I witness the influences (both positive and negative) both by working in the fitness industry and having worked in the restaurant industry for several years. Here are some of the common tips that I found useful and wanted to share with you: 1. Avoid criticizing yourself or others about weight or shape in front of your (or other’s) children. Of course we all have times that we are unhappy about something about ourselves; and that’s normal. We are only human. Just try to stop yourself before verbalizing it for others to hear. 2. Avoid talking negatively about food or labeling foods as good and bad. Such as “never eat fried foods” or “carbs will make me fat”. It’s more important to teach the importance of healthy eating and exercise instead of weight. 3. Make sure your child understands that weight gain is a normal part of development, especially during puberty. 4. De-emphasize the importance of appearance, and emphasize efforts, talents and accomplishments. 5. Measure success in healthy changes, not numbers on the scale. Such as replacing TV watching with physical activity.

I was fortunate enough to have parents that have never really “dieted” but were/ are realistically aware of their diet, and also love being active. Although I did have a few memorable comments/experiences that weren’t so pleasurable, I consider myself lucky to have an “eat to live” type of lifestyle, and hopefully as a society we can move more in that direction instead of a “live to eat” or “live to NOT eat” one. So, the next time you want to talk about your thunder thighs in front of your daughter or want to tell your nephew that he will get fat if he eats that…stop yourself and think about how that could affect he/she…and instead go for a walk with them! Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Good Time for Craft Time Long about this time of year I used to go digging through my stash of Christmas gifts for something to do that was different. Toys, puzzles, and games that had been played often during winter months no longer held much allure. This was my cue to break into crafts. How well I remember the year I opened a bag of multi-colored cotton loops, pulling out the square, wooden frame with metal pegs on all four sides to make potholders. Weaving totally consumed my attention, but one error in the pattern was a spoiler. Oh, how I hated having to take my handiwork apart. It was so much more fun to focus on combining colors. Those small, woven potholders were great gifts and can still be found in grandmother’s linen closet. Crafts can help a person get through the gray days of a long winter. Each generation seems to find its own crafts, hobbies, and arts. I’m fascinated to watch my seven-year-old grandson making bracelets with colorful, little rubber loops. This craft seems to wildly popular today. While I’ve watched some youngsters making their bracelets with looms, my grandson does it all with simply his nimble fingers. Crafts often lead to lifelong hobbies and practical skills. My middle school granddaughter is already sewing clothes thanks to interest that was cultivated by our crafting together. Presenting her with her first sewing machine couldn’t have made me happier. I imagined her learning to try new patterns with fun materials to make things she can wear as well as decorations for her room when I gave her a sewing machine of her very own. One of the best pastimes is art—drawing, painting, sculpting. These creative endeavors can be satisfying at any age or skill level. Our own Indianapolis Art Center, indplsartcenter.org, whose mission is “to engage, enlighten and enhance through art education, participation and observation,” is a great place for adults and children. Take a class, enjoy the exhibits, or check out the gift store. The IAC is a gem that can help all the residents of the area express their inner artist and keep busy until the weather calls us outside.
I think a good part of arts and crafts is the sense of accomplishment, ending up with something you’ve been wanting for yourself or a handmade gift. Hours spent crafting are hours well spent in my book. Just as I was encouraged to try my hand at lots and lots of things when I was young, I like to cheer others along. Also, the more you do, the more you’re inclined to do and be willing to try. Arts and crafts are good for every stage of life, teaching little ones to enterprise and engineer as well as channeling interests through life and keeping us challenged in the golden years.
