Project Linus at Northside Montessori School By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Students at Northside Montessori School, located at 1224 E. 52nd Street, are participating in “Project Linus,” an organization that gives blankets to hospitals, shelters and social service agencies who distribute them to children in need. The project began about a month and a half ago. Students have completed two blankets in purple and chartreuse colors while a light blue one is nearly finished. They plan to continue making these blankets due to increased demand. “We’ve had families donate fleece that we’ve been utilizing and families donating coupons to local fabric stores so that we can buy more fleece. It’s a whole school effort. The blankets can be made of various fabrics. The requirement is that

American Legion Post #3 celebrates 95th By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com American Legion Post #3, under the command of Ben Olsen, III, celebrated the 95th anniversary of the National American Legion at a dinner at the 64th and College Avenue Post. This celebration also included the 95th anniversary of Post #3. The Broad Ripple Post was created just months after the National organization was founded. (As you have no doubt read on the page 7 Gazette explanation, my grandfather Girstle Hague was a charter member of Post #3) The owners of the Steer-In on 10th Street prepared a delicious meal fitting for the major milestone celebration. The Legion never looked better. The kitchen is remodeled and the new war memorabilia display cases are filling up. Happy 95th to the Post!

they want it to be a homemade blanket because they feel that when it’s given to a child, it’s that love is given as well. We’ve had a volunteer come in every Wednesday afternoon who has helped the children. Even the three year olds here have learned how to tie the strips of cloth together to connect the blankets. Project Linus has designated drop off locations and we will drop it off at a local quilting store where it will get dropped off to a local representative,” explained Montessori teacher Tara Slagel. She mentioned her involvement with Project Linus and her teaching background. “Montessori puts great emphasis on teaching children about the community and we were looking for an opportunity to show that to them, how they can help the community around them. I think it is so important for people to see how children are working together to make a positive impact on our local community.” Her career was a calling that she answered during a special moment. “I knew that I always wanted to be in education and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Child Development. I observed at a Montessori School and absolutely fell in love with it. Within 10 minutes, it was so clear that the classroom was set up for the children to be independent and the classroom was set up to foster a love of learning and that it was a happy place to be. The classroom lends itself to all kinds of senses and its set up for children to learn in that way,” Ms. Slagel noted. Members of the local community have also been involved. “It amazes you how fast they pick up and grasp on to the learning concept. Some want to take a blanket home to their family to a loved one who is sick. It really touches their hearts. I get enthused to see their joy of learning. They’re always right there

According to their website, www.projectlinus.org, is “a non-profit organization, dedicated to ‘Providing Security Through Blankets,’ for ill or traumatized children and teens. Inspired by a picture of a three-year-old cancer patient holding her security blanket, Project Linus was begun in 1995 by Karen Loucks. Nationally, Project Linus has donated more than five million handmade blankets to help comfort children in need in hospitals, shelters and hospices. On-site owners Judy Edwards and Patricia Young opened Northside Montessori in 1986, which is a tuition-funded school for children in preschool through sixth grade. The Montessori philosophy is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment that allows for educating the whole child. Maria Montessori was born on August 31, 1870 in Chiaravalle, Italy, located on the eastern side of the country. At age 13, she studied Italian, algebra, geometry, accounting, history, geography and science at the technical school Regia Scuola Tecnica Michelangelo Buonarroti. She continued her studies at Regio Istituto Tecnico Leonardo da Vinci, where she graduated in 1890 at age 20 with a certificate in physics and mathematics. Ms. Montessori later became one of the first women to graduate from the University of Rome with a medical degree in 1896. After studying children at the University’s clinic and reading works of 19th century physicians Jean Marc Gaspard Itard and Edouard Seguin, she developed her teaching methods that are now used around the world. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Spanking City Hall author signing and launch party

Author Melyssa Hubbard is the Meridian-Kessler resident who founded the original Indiana Tea Party in 2007 to fight property taxes. The first ‘tea party’ was non-partisan and was at the Canal on the Central Avenue bridge on July 28th, 2007 [see pictures in BRG Vol 4 #16] . This activism caused a mayoral upset and a 1% cap placed on property taxes. Last year Melyssa teamed up with IBJ Books and penned the story which is received advance critical praise. “Voila!”: A Hoosier Salon Exhibit

The 4th/5th grade classes at CFI 84 are organizing and leading a Metal Drive with the help of the Can Lady Project. From May 5-10, families can bring in a variety of objects to recycle. Students will sort the materials by metal type so that we get the most money possible for the metals. On Saturday, May 10, you can bring large items, such as water heaters, patio furniture, etc- to recycle to 440 East 57th street. We will be set up with trucks to load the large items for recycling. Please spread the word throughout your neighborhood and encourage everyone to clean out their closets, basements and garages! All of the money goes directly to CFI 84. The Hoosier Salon will present “Voila!” in its Broad Ripple Gallery March 21 through April 18. Chelsea’s opened its doors on St. Patrick’s Day in 1984 in approximately 900 square feet on Guilford Avenue. At that time there was a scarcity of retail sources for alternative cards, ‘modern’ gifts and home décor items, and non-traditional gift-wrap material in the Indianapolis market. Within several months, owners Ellen Morley Matthews and David C. Matthews learned that there was a niche needing to be filled, especially given Chelsea’s location in Broad Ripple Village, and therefore devoted their efforts to being contemporary, progressive, and eclectic. In June 1990 Chelsea’s increased its space by moving seventy-five feet north to an historic building on the northeast corner of Guilford Avenue and Westfield Boulevard which had previously housed Lobraico’s Rexall Drugstore. In the heart of Broad Ripple Village, Chelsea’s has offered a wonderful selection of unusual gifts, cards, jewelry, candles, and decorative accessories, as well as the handcrafted work of local and global artisans. Chelsea’s has been proud to feature the work of a number of local jewelry and paper artists. Gifting is a form of communication, and Chelsea’s has endeavored to provide its customers with the opportunity to choose something unique, accompanied by a beautiful card, and presented in a truly inviting manner. Chelsea’s has maintained its emphasis on being a very affordable specialty retailer so that its customers would have the option to buy something wonderful for themselves as well as choosing a gift for someone else. As we mark Chelsea’s 30th Anniversary on March 17th 2014, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the support that we have received over our many years in business. The favorable input that comes our way on a regular basis equates to getting a good job review. We’ve met so many great people over our thirty years and hopefully we have been a resource for more than just a fun place to shop. One of the many elements of what closing Chelsea’s means to us, the sound of laughter emanating from people who are reading the cards will be sorely missed. It is truly bittersweet to announce that in the near future we will place Chelsea’s into the annals of history. We’ve always said that at Chelsea’s the emphasis is on special. Booze, Barns and Braided Bread There wasn’t much to toast about from the outcome of the 2014 Indiana Legislative Session. With the possible exception of the fact that North Carolina is now the only state in the US that does not allow wine or beer to be sold during its State Fair. Our elected officials lifted Indiana out of the seller cellar by approving a bill that allows the State Fair to create an area where beer and wine can be sold and consumed to those over 21. Can’t take it with you. And said wine and beer doesn’t necessarily have to be Indiana made. Bet alot of the marketing savvy members of the Indiana Brewers Guild are not hoppy (craft beer joke!) about that part of the measure but Governor Pence signed it, so the law gets its first free run (wine joke!) during this year’s State Fair August 1-17. Perhaps it’s one way for the Indiana legislature and the Governor to take a serious look at the wine industries of nearby Michigan. And better yet New York.

Long- vacant buildings in the Ripple an eyesore, Greens to open in June after 2 year delay Several readers have asked us about the status of the various vacant buildings and lots in the Ripple. Here is an update on 4 long standing vacant businesses: 1. At the corner of College and Broad Ripple Avenue sits a vacant restaurant and bar. A “for lease” sign remains on building. (This was the Barley Island Brewery and Scholars Inn before that.) A call to the realtor leasing the site was not returned. 2. Former Shell Station (Whole Foods/Apartments site): The controversial proposal has been approved by the City. It is apparently pending TIF funding resolution. BRVA had no update nor a timetable but I am hearing not much will be happening until next year. 3. Former Village Inn, 929 East Westfield: This is across the street from Brugge. A new restaurant and bar is planned. A construction permit is in the window of the facility. However, a call to the contractor was not returned. I am hearing a fall opening is anticipated. 4. The old Monon Depot, 902 E 64th: This building on the Monon Trail housed the City Planning Department a few years ago. The fading green building has had a sign for over two years pronouncing the depot will be a new restaurant called “Public Greens (from the Patachou Foundation)”. While originally expected to open in March 2012, Christina Pippen, Patachou Brand Manager, told us that they incurred a delay due to the flood of the Petite Chou Broad Ripple location. Additionally, during this time they created and established a new 501c3, The Patachou Foundation. The Public Greens Restaurant will now open in June. Proceeds will fund providing meals to at-risk children in the community. There will be a dedicated farmer for the green space and the restaurant will support local farmers, a chicken coop on the property, and a huge outdoor dining space along the Monon Trail. The upscale cafeteria service will have every menu item featuring house made and often grown locally items. lm lco

Robbery suspects nabbed On March 7, Indianapolis police arrested two teenagers on charges involving a string of robberies in the Broad Ripple area. Marrott Park trout lily bloom coming soon Despite the recent snow and cold, the calendar says it time for spring and that means an explosion of spring wildflowers including the yellow trout lily and the bloodroot which may be found at Marrott Park at 75th and College. This small park is a hidden gem for viewing spring flowers. The trout lily gets its name from the mottled leaves which to some look like a trout. The blood root apparently has a photo by Bill Malcolm reddish root. There are many other flowers at the park and they are all spring ephemerals -they have to bloom before the trees get their leaves. Other great parks for viewing spring wild flowers include the forest north of the tennis courts at Broad Ripple Park and of course, Holliday Park. Holliday Park offers 2 spring wildflower walks (April 12 and May 10) with Norma Wallman, the wild flower guru who just wrote a book on the subject. New recreational trail along College Avenue near 75th Street almost complete The new bike and hike recreational trail is almost finished. It runs from 75th Street and College south along the east side of College Avenue (next to Marrott Park). Since previously there was no sidewalk on this side of the street, this trail is a great addition and connects to the bike lane going east at 75th Street to connect to the Monon Trail. Volunteer for JCC Earth Day April 27 The JCC’s 3rd Annual Earth Day Community Celebration and they are looking for some great volunteers. Just BEET it! As a personal trainer an avid runner, I am always paying attention to methods to improve fitness whether through nutrition or exercise techniques. I try to keep up on the heaps of data (most of which is conflicting) in this area which can feel like a full time job. As I am gearing up to run the Boston marathon next month (yep I am going back woohoo!), I have been particularly interested in a relatively new body of research that one of my awesome trainers told me about….Eating beets can significantly improve exercise performance. What? That’s what I thought initially as you may have as well. After researching the studies on this topic, it does appear true after all. How In an effort to explain this best, let quote an article from the website naturalnews. com (they sound much smarter than me ): Beet juice is naturally high in nitrate (NO3), which the body uses to make both nitrite (NO2) and nitric oxide. Nitrite is known to protect the blood vessels from injury, while nitric acid expands blood vessels and therefore increases the flow of oxygen to the cells. This, in turn, increases both the power available to the muscles and the length of time that the muscles can exercise without tiring. Early studies into the effectiveness of beet juice for exercise showed that people who drink the juice for several days before undergoing exercise tests do indeed use less oxygen in their muscles, and are correspondingly able to exercise for longer. In one study, drinking beet juice decreased oxygen needs by 19 percent and increased exercise endurance time by 17 percent. Wow! This is quite a statement as 19 and 17 percent is a significant amount. As I read on, I also learned that not only does it increase one’s endurance, meaning a longer, capable bout of exercise, but it also increases speed. It seems beet juice allows your muscles to perform the same amount of work while using less oxygen, somehow making your body’s energy production more efficient. Let me mention a few study findings to further convince you if you are skeptical: • Beet juice increased time to exhaustion: cyclists who drank beet juice could ride 16 per cent longer than without beet juice in their diet. The beet juice also allowed them to increase intensity with less oxygen cost. • In walkers and runners, beet juice reduced the oxygen cost of walking and moderate and intense running, and increased time to exhaustion. • Runners who ate baked beets before running a 5km time trial ran faster (and the last 1.8 km five per cent faster), and had a lower rate of perceived exertion during the first part of the run. • Trained divers could hold their breath almost half-a-minute longer if they drank beet juice before their dive. This is just a few of the several studies showing the benefits of beet consumption on exercise endurance and performance. If the thought of eating beets makes you cringe, other vegetable have nitrates (they just aren’t as concentrated as beets). They include: Vegetables high in nitrates include: rhubarb, arugula, spinach, celery, cress, chervil, lettuce, Chinese cabbage, endive, fennel, kohlrabi, leek, and parsley. And what’s also nice is that it doesn’t take a lot of it to see benefit. Studies show that 500ml of juice, or roughly one medium sized beet is sufficient to see benefits. It’s time to reconnect to the village! This year would be a good time to explore the opportunities at two wonderful parks within walking or biking distance of the village. Broad Ripple Park, longtime anchor of the area, has programming that can interest old and young alike. If you check into the Indyparks.org website or stop by the Park’s office on Broad Ripple Avenue, you can sign up for a variety of classes. Preschoolers can dance, do gymnastics, or busy their hands with arts and crafts. Dogs can join the fun and access daily exercise at the popular dog park streetside. Adults have a variety of options from dance, bridge, self defense, or just renting meeting space. Mark your calendar for these upcoming events: “Moonlight Madness” – Egg Hunt (Ages 3-10) Hop on out to Broad Ripple Park for an ‘eggs-tra’ special flashlight Surprise egg hunt. Games, arts, crafts, and refreshments are all part of this fun program. Be sure you bring a flashlight and dress appropriately. Preregistration is required April 4, 7:30-9 p.m. $10 “Eggs”cellent Egg Hunt (Ages 2-7) Get ready for one spectacular egg hunt. All kinds of candy and prizes will be hidden. There will be“egg” sighting. crafts, games, the bunny hop, and best of all a visit from our big cuddly Bunny. Pre-registration only. April 5, 10:30-11:45 a.m. One of Indianapolis’ oldest parks, Holliday Park, located along the banks of the White River, is a major urban resource encompassing 95 acres of woodlands and trails. The Park’s wooded areas contain natural springs and wetlands, a woodland pond, and a long approachable stretch of the White River, a climax beechmaple forest and over 400 tree, plant, and wildflower species. Bird watchers have listed more than 200 species in the Park. In addition, deer, fox, beaver, rabbits, squirrels, and many other native species reside in or pass through the Park’s heavily wooded, plunging ravines. Amenities: nature center, playground, trails, arboretum, extensive native gardens. Check on Holliday Park’s website for a variety of programming. Here you don’t even have to leave the city to enjoy nature at its best— yes, right in Broad Ripple’s own backyard. Holliday Park also provides a Nature Discovery summer camp experiences. Registration has begun so plan ahead and get your camper a spot. And, if you qualify and are an early bird, they are asking for camp counselors. Holliday Park Hours: Sunrise to sunset, daily. Nature Center: Monday.–Saturday, 9 a.m.–5.p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m.–5 p.m. Admission to Holliday Park and the Nature Center is free. This fun event ushers in the planting season with artisans and landscapers who tantalize the gardener’s imagination. A point of interest is that Orchard in Bloom has donated more than $100,000 to Holliday Park in the history of the event. I can’t leave out the Village activities. The restaurants will be preparing their patios for summer dining. Spring and summer inventory will be arriving at retail stores. Some of the brew pubs will be changing the beer formulations for the coming spring. Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market begins May 3. Again this year, the Farmer’s Market will be behind Broad Ripple High School every Saturday morning. I can’t wait! Mark your calendar for two other big May happenings: the Spring Gallery Tour is May 9, just the week before Broad Ripple Art Fair, May 17 and 18. The 44th annual Broad Ripple Art Fair will be at the Indianapolis Art Center. Here’s to all the good times in coming months. There’s lots more to Broad Ripple in addition its popular bars and restaurants. There will be music, festivals, cruising, and evening strolls along the Monon Trail. Breakfast Optimists helping area youth Breakfast Optimist Club of Indianapolis sponsors basketball contests. The club promotes fun and good physical fitness through the Pass, Dribble, and Shoot program. Since 1977 the club has sponsored the program at the Concord Center at 1320 S. Meridian Street. Concord Center has been serving the inner city youth and community for over 100 years. Recently the club conducted the contest for different age groups, boys and girls. The first place winners of the different age groups continue to the state finals. The Breakfast Optimist Club has been serving youth and the community since 1958, now in its 55th year. The club meets at 7:30am every week at Perkin’s Restaurant on East 82nd and Allisonville Road. Other projects are: - Buying hearing aids for kids who cannot afford them - Contest for essays and oratorical.
