Alzheimer’s Association facts and figures By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2014 Facts and Figures report released in March, a woman’s estimated lifetime risk of developing Alzheimer’s at age 65 is 1 in 6, compared with nearly 1 in 11 for a man. As real a concern as breast cancer is to women’s health, females in their 60s are about twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s over the remainder of their lives compared to breast cancer. “While Alzheimer’s disease can affect both men and women, women are the epicenters of Alzheimer’s disease – making up the majority of both people living with the disease and caregivers,” explained Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter Executive Director Heather Hershberger. “There has been tremendous progress in treating breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes and HIV/ AIDS through well-deserved investments by the federal government. Comparable investments are now needed Alzheimer’s Association to realize the same success with Alzheimer’s in preventing (317) 575-9620 and treating the disease. Our www.alz.org/indiana community needs to come together to fight against this disease,” she added. Their local website is: www.alz.org/indiana. A brochure for an April 25 Alzheimer Association Education Conference is at: www.alz.org/documents/indiana/Conference_Brochure(1).pdf. Located at the Indianapolis Marriott North at 3645 River Crossing near the Fashion Mall, the event features three keynote speakers: David Morgan, Ph.D., CEO/ Executive Director of the University of South Florida Heath Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute, Steven Sabat, Ph.D. Professor of Psychology at Georgetown University and Matthew Baumgart, Senior Director of Public Policy for the Alzheimer’s Association. The conference commences with a 7:30 a.m. check-in that includes a continental breakfast. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater Indiana Chapter “invites professionals, family caregivers, friends or anyone who would like to learn more. Attendees will learn from a variety of presenters on a wide range of subjects to help better understand the disease and how to best care for those with Alzheimer’s and related dementia.” There are 2.5 times as many women than men providing intensive “on-duty” care 24 hours for someone living with Alzheimer’s. Among caregivers who feel isolated, women are much more likely than men to link isolation with feeling depressed (17 percent of women vs. 2 percent of men) in a recent survey. “Not only are women mothers, wives and employees - they are also caregivers and care partners. Research shows that women are more likely than men to provide care for loved ones living with Alzheimer’s disease, but perhaps even more significant, findings show that women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease over time than men. We can easily see that women are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease in many ways, and it’s time to do something about it,” said Leah Shattuck, Communications Director of the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter.”

BRVA president Justin McKeand at the bi-annual meeting.

BRVA bi-annual public meeting held at IAC By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The first of two 2014 public meetings of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) was held on April 15 at the Indianapolis Art Center. The room was packed with close to 200 attendees. BRVA president Justin McKeand called the meeting to order around 7pm. He recognized past president Jay Wetzel and asked the members of the newly elected board of directors to stand. Then a raffle winner was drawn for the first of several prizes, donated by Half Baked Pottery, Air Tan and Gordon’s Food Service. Justin announced a new BRVA membership campaign called Ask A Friend. Each BRVA member can recruit prospective members that would fill in the “referred by” portion on the membership form. The first prize for the member recruiting 5 or more is a certificate for dinner for six at Corner Wine Bar. Everyone with a referral will get a red tote bag. BRVA board member Tom Healy spoke next on the accomplishments of 2013. He described too many projects to list here. They included the rebuilding of Rainbow Bridge, new crosswalks, and many new business projects that the BRVA worked with to ensure that the Envision Broad Ripple plan was properly taken into consideration in each. Tom described the role of the TIF and the Shell Station project in stimulating daytime activities in the Village. BRVA board member Helen Carroll explained the current status of the parking situation in the Village. The Department of Public Works is currently formulating a plan for Broad Ripple based on the input from the BRVA and resident/business surveys. The plan is expected in May with public meetings to discuss it. BRVA board member Scott Dunlap went over several public safety issues and introduced IMPD Sgt. Sandy Storkman and Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry. They explained the role of IMPD and the Prosecutor’s office in helping to alleviate crime in Broad Ripple. BRVA board member Elizabeth Marshall gave the current status of flood insurance in the area. Several changes are in the works and there is also a request to do partial area changes to the flood maps as the levee phases are completed. New flood maps are expected this summer. Everyone congregated in the lobby after the meeting for complimentary Sun King beers and food from La Mulita, Usual Suspects, 317 Burger. Next meeting - October 21 - BRVA elections

The strain of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is also felt in the workplace. Among caregivers who have been employed while they were also caregiving: 20 percent of women vs. 3 percent of men went from working full-time to working part-time while acting as a caregiver. Additional statistics revealed that 18 percent of women vs. 11 percent of men took a leave of absence, 11 percent of women vs. 5 percent of men gave up work entirely and 10 percent of women vs. 5 percent of men lost job benefits. An Indiana Chapter Alzheimer Association press release mentioned, “These numbers are set to soar as the baby boomers continue to enter the age of greatest risk for Alzheimer’s. Unless something is done to change the course of the disease, there could be as many as 16 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s in 2050, at a cost of $1.2 trillion (in current dollars) to the nation. This dramatic rise includes a 500 percent increase in combined Medicare and Medicaid spending and a 400 percent increase in out-of-pocket spending. The country’s first-ever National Alzheimer’s Plan has a goal of preventing and effectively treating Alzheimer’s disease by 2025. Ensuring strong implementation, including adequately funding research, is the best way to avoid these human and financial tolls. On February 7, 2012, the Obama Administration announced a historic $156 million investment to tackle Alzheimer’s disease that includes increasing research funding. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) dedicated an additional $50 million from its fiscal year 2012 budget. They are also sustaining and increasing Alzheimer’s research investment. A fiscal year 2013 budget proposes $80 million in new Alzheimer’s funding. An initiative also includes $26 million to support the National Plan goals supporting people with Alzheimer’s and their families by educating the public and healthcare providers. This includes education and outreach to improve the public’s understanding of Alzheimer’s, outreach to enhance health care providers’ knowledge, expanded support for people with Alzheimer’s disease and caregivers in the community and improved data collection and analysis to better understand its’ impact on people, families and the health and long-term care systems. This initiative aims to take immediate action on Alzheimer’s disease and provides support for ideas being developed through this National Plan. The full text of the Alzheimer’s Association Facts and Figures can be viewed at www.alz.org. If someone you know is affected by Alzheimer’s, contact their national 24-hour hotline at 800-272-3900 to learn more about support groups and resources in your area or call the local Indiana chapter at 575-9620.

Installation Nation Indianapolis Art Center - 820 E. 67th Street Friday April 25 6-10pm Saturday April 26 12-4pm, free, all-ages

Primary Colours is an Indianapolis-based non-profit devoted to integrating visual artists and the community to create and sustain a thriving environment for the arts. They roll all of that together in their annual Installation Nation event. This year, Primary Colours is leaving behind the shipping containers from past shows and embracing the artistic opportunities and challenges of creating installations directly in the park. Eleven artists and art groups will transform ArtsPark into an outdoor gallery. This is an excellent opportunity to see artists testing the limits of temporary outdoor installation art and a very unique offering in Indianapolis’ annual art calendar. Each artist’s work presents a different vision of installation art. There will be interactive pieces, pieces in the trees, on the grounds, on the terrace, and hung on sheets. The nature of the layout will allow the viewer to experience pieces individually as well as interacting with each other. You will have a chance to meet the artists and celebrate the arts in Indianapolis.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Water Warrior Yoga Looks to Help Aveda Network Raise $6 Million and Consciousness about Global Water Crisis during Annual Campaign BAMBU SALON & SPA will host Water Warrior Yoga in honor of Earth Month and in support of organizations around the world working to preserve access to clean water. Last year Aveda’s global network of beauty professional and corporate employees in more than 30 countries passionately pursued our goal of protecting and preserving clean water for everyone, everywhere by organizing thousands of events to raise a total of $5.5 million for clean water. More than 4,000 children in developing nations die each day from preventable conditions directly linked to consumption of unsafe drinking water. As the campaign moves into its 8th year focusing on clean water, Aveda Earth Month 2014 will help to achieve this change, by directing funds from this event to support our local Earth Month partner, Hoosier Environmental Council. WATER WARRIOR YOGA - On Sunday, April 27th, Bambu Salon will host Water Warrior Yoga in Broad Ripple Park at 2:00. Our own Ann Georgescu will lead us in this donation-based yoga class benefiting the Hoosier Environmental Council. Our indoor alternative will be the Athenaeum. www.crowdrise.com/waterwarrioryoga for online donations to The Hoosier Environmental Council. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 9 in the left section of the top row which contains 1-2-3-4. The 9 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 3. The 9 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 1-2. The 9 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the space above the 3. The only place left is to the right of the 4. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

A sign is up at 833 Westfield Boulevard [G4 on map] saying “Coming Soon Razzle Dazzle”.

Indiana’s oldest and arguably most successful winery, Oliver, is once again putting consumer needs first. The Bloomington-based winery grows most of the grapes that go into its large lineup. But a few varietals just don’t like the Indiana climate and soil, so the winery does bring in some outside fruit to produce a couple of bottles. I recently talked with winery president Bill Oliver who told me they wanted to give consumers the chance to experience a California wine at an affordable price. So they partnered with a number of grape growers in Washington and California, bought their grapes, brought them to Indiana and created the new “VINE series”. Bill told me they tasted through dozens of samples before deciding on the final line up which includes a fresh and fruity Moscato, a rich Chardonnay and an easy drinking dry red blend. Most of Oliver’s elegant estate bottled wines cost $15-$20 and up. The new VINE SERIES will sell for less than ten bucks. And be available at local supermarkets in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. A stylish label and continued Oliver quality gives wine lovers another reason to lift a glass or two. Oliver Red Blend – This ready to drink dry red is made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It’s super smooth with subtle notes of black cherry and cocoa. The perfect bottle for burgers or brats on the grill. I shared a bottle with some friends and they all loved the easy accessibility of fruit and flavor. I asked Bill about the winter on the vineyard. He said it took a toll. Like all of us he hopes that spring is here to stay with no surprise frost or hail. As for selling wine and beer during the Indiana State Fair, he thinks there will most likely be wine and beer from all over the US and world available but is excited that Indiana will have a chance to showcase its own as well. Which makes wines like the Vineyard Series a great example of how successful a collaboration can be for both the vintner and the consumer. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Jill and doggyboy Harp live in Warfleigh, where she also consults and teaches in an effort to keep the doggyboy’s treat jar filled with biscuits and her freezer stocked with ice cream. Congratulations Michaela and Bryan!

Congratulations to the BRMHS Color Guard on a terrific Winter Guard season! After receiving a Bronze last year in its introductory season, the Guard was awarded a Silver rating this past weekend. Indianapolis has certainly been on the map for its “walkability” especially in the downtown area, and its attention to our multiple fitness trails and parks. I am also very excited to see the vast number of bike lanes popping up on many of our city streets encouraging commute via bike or foot. Unfortunately, Indianapolis still ranks quite low on the nations fitness rankings. A recent study ranked Indianapolis 45th on an annual list that rates the country’s largest metropolitan areas in terms of health and fitness. The American College of Sport Medicine (which is ironically based internationally in Indianapolis) has an American Fitness Index which is similar to a “physical” for cities. It examines several different areas like health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions, health care access and fitness levels. In the sixth annual report, the metropolitan area of Indianapolis-Carmel scored 36.8 out of a possible 100 points. More so, Indy actually dropped two spots from a year ago, when the area ranked 43rd on the list. To measure Indy’s health and fitness level, ACSM worked with the Indiana University School of Medicine and a panel of 26 health experts. Researchers also looked at data from the U.S. Census, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, the Trust for the Public Land City Park Facts, among other sources. The top 10 healthiest cities according to their criteria are: 1. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. 2. Washington, D.C. 3. Portland, Ore. 4. San Francisco, Calif. 5. Denver, Colo. 6. Boston, Mass. 7. Sacramento, Calif. 8. Seattle, Wash. 9. Hartford, Conn. 10. San Jose, Calif

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter On the Move Snow birds (the human variety) will be arriving back in Indy soon. Some of us are no different than our feathered friends when it comes to migrating. Whether seeking better weather in Florida, the Carolinas, Arizona or California to escape winter, a good number of people and birds make this area home for three of our seasons. As the return migration progresses, there a quite a few birds you may see for a day, a week or even a season or so. We do have resident birds that don’t migrate or if they do, fly only short distances. These include songbirds such as cardinals, goldfinches, sparrows, titmice, robins, mourning doves, some woodpeckers, and hawks. Migration, often north to south in the fall and reverse direction in the spring, occurs because of availability of food sources, habitat for breeding, or quest for temperate weather. Paths, called “flyways” or “fly corridors,” are often repeated. Although there are four major flyways (Atlantic, Mississippi, Central and Pacific corridors), we do have definite migration flights through Indiana. Each fall you can witness one of Indiana’s greatest wildlife spectacles at JasperPulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. Tens of thousands of sandhill cranes visit the area and land in the shallow marshes. You may see them flying overhead in the Broad Ripple area. They are big birds with a wing span measuring as much as 6 1/2 feet and have a distinctive rolling call that’s amplified because they usually fly in larger groups. They rest in Indiana along the flyway to Florida (winter) and to Canada (summer). Many backyard birdfeeder hobbyists know about the migration of ruby-throated hummingbirds and eagerly await their return in May, having reluctantly brought in feeders in early October. One of the migratory visitors I look forward to in my backyard is the rose-breasted grosbeak with its dashing black and white markings. These showy birds stay at my feeder for about a week, fuel up, and then head on north. Other birds (bluebirds being one) are partial migrants with stays of varying lengths. They may fly just far enough to find adequate food sources. Another type of migration to be aware of is “irruptions” involving birds that have flown past their normal range. Either the search for food sources or weather may the reason. One year we had an influx of redbreasted nuthatches. They were great entertainment at the feeders that winter. This year a number of birdwatchers spotted snowy owls. There was also an abundance of shorteared owl sightings. Migration and irruptions keep things interesting for those who watch and feed birds. Nature and how it works is a wonder. The cue to be alert for migrating birds is change in the length of days. These changes are also related to hormonal shifts in birds. They want to live in habitats that let them thrive — just like humans. Let the days get shorter and colder and the impulse to move elsewhere becomes irresistible. When the days back home in Indiana get lighter and warmer, the lure to return inevitably comes again. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
