Owner Chanh Brodsky recently discussed her passion of yoga. “I became interested in yoga as a way to balance my physical and mental wellness. It helps me center myself and find inner peace while at the same time build more flexibility and strength in my body.” “I wanted to help others by sharing what I learned and experienced not only thru the practice of yoga and Buddhist philosophy, but also how you can incorporate these two elements together. As a Buddhist, I believe in spreading my love and joy to others in order to help them become more empowered. The decision to open up a yoga studio was easy. It was always a passion of mine to teach and share. I wanted to build a community based yoga studio where students felt comfortable practicing in a non-competitive environment,” she added. I love the people.” The yoga studio’s name has a philosophical theory behind it. “The term, ‘koan,’ is a paradox to be meditated upon that is used to train Zen Buddhist monks to abandon ultimate dependence on reason and to force them into gaining sudden intuitive enlightenment. It is a phrase or saying that is to be pondered by Buddhists so that in this koan of breathing, as you breathe in, you breathe in through your whole body and as you breathe out, you breathe out through your whole body. So in all of my classes, to help students go deeper into the practice of yoga, we should be mindful of breathing. Students should try to let go out of that autopilot in their daily lives and find more peace and calmness,” she emphasized. Ms. Brodsky’s travels have enriched her personal experiences. “I want people to know that before coming to Indianapolis, I lived abroad for one year in Belize and have traveled all over Mexico and Central America. I was a volunteer substitute teacher at Holy Cross Anglican School in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. (It’s located off the northeast coast of Belize). Volunteerism brings more significance to your life, helps round out your personality, and gives you a better disposition. The whole point of taking a sabbatical that entire year was that I wanted to learn and understand how to live a more self-sustaining life where you picked your own food, fished for your meal and relied on oneself for shelter. It was more of a free spiritual experience.” Breathe Yoga’s hours varies. Currently hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday and 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on

BRHS reunion for classes of the 30s and 40s to be held June 1 at Riviera Club The annual reunion for the BRHS Classes of 1930’s through 1940’s will be held at the Riviera Club on Sunday, June 1 at noon (reunion is the first Sunday of June each year). Saturday. They are closed on Sunday. A local mental health therapist is available at Breathe Yoga’s studio and provides private sessions to individuals by appointment. More information is available by calling (765) 592-3728. According to their website, www.breatheyogadharma.com, Yoga 101 is “an introductory class for beginners where yoga stances are broken down. Poses and sequences enable students to gain more of an understanding of the techniques used. Personal instruction is given to each student to allow for better postures and alignment.” Vinyasa I features “Free flowing asanas and short pranayama at the beginning of class. Students practice breath synchronized movement with dance like movements inhaling and exhaling through the whole body. Students will gain a moderate level of cardio, burn fat and tone the entire body.” Vinyasa II classes “focuses on intermediate asanas such as twists, binds, forward and backward bends, arm balances, and inversions. You will burn fat and build muscle. Students who are looking for a challenge will find one.” Vinyasa SlowFlow sessions “Safely realign your back to relieve spinal compression and ease lower back pain. As you relax and stretch, your own body weight applies pressure, helping muscles relax while circulation and flexibility increase. The focus is on coordinating your breathing with each pose and with each pose, a sense of calmness. Beginners will enjoy the class. The room is lit with scented candles and relaxing instrumental music is played in the background. Students are allowed to wear socks and bring a pillow or additional yoga props.” Rise and Shine Yoga is “an invigorating morning class to get your blood flowing and to start your day right. Endiana is made up of Tim Fuller, Tim Gray, Doug Henthron, and Matthew Aaron – all talented musicians. They are celebrating the release of their newest record, This Means War. Speaking of late-great Broad Ripple rock bands, Jason Brown, front man of the popular 1990s band Push Down and Turn will open the show.

Yowza! This will be fun. From 1979 – 1983 the Zero Boys were THE hardcore/ punk band in the Midwest and toured all over the country opening for legendary bands, including the Dead Kennedys. I have glorious memories of dancing wildly at sweat-soaked shows during that era. Bootleg tapes (yes, tapes) were cult classics, and listened to reverently for the last three decades. Their record, Vicious Circle, was re-released in 2009 and their music was introduced to another generation. After a couple European tours and east coast shows over the last five years, they are playing shows on the west coast in support of their new album, Monkey. They will end the tour with a show on Indy CD & Vinyl’s new stage. This promises to be an amazing show. Go. You won’t be sorry.

SoBro Arts Spring Studio Tour
It’s time to open the doors, let the fresh air in, and welcome visitors to the artist enclave at 2060-2070 E. 54th St. SoBro Arts will be having an open studio tour on Saturday May 31st, 4pm-8pm. This event is free, open to the public, all ages welcome. Parking is on-site, in the lot in between the two buildings. After hearing the news of the 54th & Monon Art Fair being canceled this year, SoBro artists wanted to host an art event on 54th Street. SoBro Arts is a self-promoted group of artists located in a mixed-use business center on East 54th Street (south of Broad Ripple, and east of the Monon Trail near Keystone Ave). Because it’s slightly off-the-beaten-path, SoBro Arts is not on the routine art circuits in Indy, like IDADA’s First Friday, or the Broad Ripple Gallery Tour. But the fact is…artists are working hard here, and the buildings make AMAZING art studios! The architectural saw tooth rooflines create spacious gabled ceilings inside, with large windows letting in tons of natural light. The SoBro studio tour is a great opportunity to get a glimpse inside these artists’ work spaces. On the outside, the buildings look indistinguishable; behind the doors, each studio contains unique style and talent. The event will feature a variety of work including paintings, fiber, mixed media, ceramics, and photography, by 15+ artists who have made a name for themselves in Indy and beyond. Just by nature of their studio location, these artists keep somewhat of a low-profile, and are typically only open by appointment; however they are all active professionals in the community as working artists and educators. This is a great chance to meet the SoBro artists and take a peek inside their creative work space. Visitors can talk with the artists about their work, purchase art, and inquire about commissions or classes. Find custom handmade tile at Zech clay studio, painted mural services in Steve Paddack’s studio, and check into Art Lab’s upcoming summer classes. Take a look inside the colorful and eclectic studio/salon of Shiva Saghafi. And stop by Seed & Star, the shared studio of mixed media artist Sofiya Inger, photographer Emily Schwank, and painters Kate Oberreich and Grace Kite; and new tenants, Artemesia, is a group of five women oil-painters. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

National math whizzes compete at RIT/NTID
Quick: What is the sum of the first five odd positive integers? If you stopped cold trying to remember what an integer is, you’d be no match for more than 80 6th, 7th and 8th graders from 16 states and Canada who on April 4 and 5 attended the 9th annual National Math Competition for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf. The students – many of them wearing colorful team T-shirts – participated in two days worth of tasks that measured their speed, accuracy, teamwork and math skills. Winners received cash prizes, trophies and bragging rights. And they probably could tell you the correct answer to that integer question is 25. There were team competitions and individual competitions, where students were given questions on an overhead projector. They had to write their answer on a paper, circle it, and push a signal that activated a strobe light within a matter of seconds. The first to get the correct answer got the point. In addition to the competition, the students got to socialize with their peers and make new friends from across the country. Registration open for Eagle Creek Park Kids Fishing Derby JCC Farmers Market, Fresh Produce, Artisenal Foods, Dairy and More The Eagle Creek Park Foundation is hosting its 13th annual Kids Fishing Derby from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 7 at Eagle Creek Park’s Coffer Dam, located at the first right south of the 71st Street gate on the city’s northwest side. The family-friendly event is free for children ages 4-14, and takes place in conjunction with one of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources designated free fishing days. This opportunity allows Indiana residents to fish without a license or trout/salmon stamp in public waters. “We usually see a lot of kids fishing for the very first time,” said Alex Upchurch, Eagle Creek Park Foundation board member and Fishing Derby chairman. “Large youth and church groups are all welcome to come out and enjoy the serene setting, and of course the thrill of the catch!” Last year, a few sprinkles of rain fell on the derby, but Upchurch says the event carried on and made conditions favorable for fish to bite. “Kids were catching bluegill, crappie, bass and even catfish, just one after another!” he said. All participants receive a cookout-style lunch and goody bags. Special features include entertainment and prizes by the Pacers Fan Van, and music from 107.9 the Mix. McGruff the Crime Dog will make a special appearance along with park animals from the park’s nature centers. Live bait is provided. Participants are asked to bring their own fishing equipment, although a limited amount of fishing poles will be available if children cannot supply their own. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers will be available to help bait and hook, and demonstrate casting techniques. Pre-registration is required by Thursday, June 5 at 5 p.m., and space is limited to the first 400 participants. The $5 gate admission fee is waived for pre-registered participants. alan@broadripplegazette.com The May town meeting for Ravenwood was held on Monday, May 5 at the Glendale Christian Church at 1788 Haynes Avenue [BB29 on map]. Suzie Stamm opened the meeting and reported on upcoming calendar events. June 19 is Community Day at Broad Ripple Park from 11am to 2pm. July 3 is the Ravenswood fundraiser at the church from 7pm to 9pm. July 3 is also the date for the annual Ravenswood fireworks. National Night Out will be August 5. Suzie then introduced Representative Christina Hale. Representative Hale described her upcoming District 87 Community Chats. The chats are to allow for better communication with her by having open informal meetings at local businesses. The next one will be May 23 at Panera Bread in Castleton from 4:30pm to 6pm. Representative Hale gave us an update on her first bill. It is a bill that will require “cash for gold” stores to act like pawn shops. The gold recycling shops must record the seller’s identification and add a 10-day holding period on purchased gold before melting it down. This should make fencing stolen gold harder to accomplish. Hale’s phone is (317) 232-9600. Next on the agenda was Hodge Patel, State Director for U.S. Senator Joe
Donnelly. Patel said Senator Donnelly’s office can be contacted for veterans issues, Social Security claim issues, mortgage foreclosures, and flood insurance. The office number is (317) 226-5555. The report from Parks and Rec said there is a need for volunteers for the summer camp. IMPD Sergeant Hanson presented a slide show describing probable cause. There was also a long discussion on no soliciting/no trespassing signs. I learned that it is not enough to post a no trespassing sign. To break the law, a trespasser must also be verbally warned by the land owner before calling the police. The Health and Hospital report discussed the approved sewer rate increase in the Ravenswood area. There were many questions from the attendees about the mandatory sewer hookups that will occur. The last speaker was Mayor’s liaison Gary Loveless who said he is available for walk-in meetings every Wednesday afternoon at the Broad Ripple Village Association office and every Tuesday morning at the 56th and Emerson Lincoln Square. The next meeting for Ravenswood is scheduled for August 4 at 7 pm.

Temporary sewer pipe along Canal Towpath abuts Canal drinking supply We have two Citizens projects going on along the Canal tow path. Illinois Street is closed north of Westfield. This is a sewer project with a temporary large rubber pipe running along the Canal (the latter serves as the source of our drinking water). Per Sarah Holsapple of Citizens, the sewer rehabilitation project is underway in order to repair a permanent sewer pipeline that is 80 years old and runs underground, apparently along the canal. They are rehabilitating it with a new liner. The mile long project ends at Holcomb Gardens. A contractor is on site 24 hours. Further down the Canal Towpath towards downtown you will see another temporary pipe. A 3-year project is underway to dredge the canal. Citizens notes that the canal has become clogged with milfoil plants and since gravity is relied on to provide the flow to the downtown treatment plant, the dredging will allow better flow. The sludge is pumped out of the bottom of the canal and stored according to a contractor I spoke with. Then the water is released back into the canal. Brooks to face Denney in fall Congressional race, Delaney un-opposed, Hale vs. Friedman (Primary election results) The primary election was held May 6. Results of interest to Broad Ripple include: • State Representative Ed Delaney (D) has no Republican opponent although the apparently party has until June to appoint one. He represents the 86th District. (The Republicans had no candidate in the primary.) • Freshman State Representative Christina Hale (D) will face Mike Friedman (R) in November in the 87th House District which includes Broad Ripple. Neither had an opponent in the May 6 primary. (Broad Ripple is in both districts.) • Freshman Congresswoman Susan Brooks won 73% of the vote against two Republican challengers. She will face Democrat Shawn Denney in the November election. Broad Ripple is the new southern end of the 5th Congressional District. (Media commentators note that primary challengers have been pushing Republican candidates to the right as such challengers come from the Tea Party in many cases. This may have been the case here. Given that Broad Ripple is generally more liberal than Hamilton County, which composes most of Congressional District 5, this could be an interesting contest for BR voters.) New boutique lodging option opens along the Monon The Hotel Broad Ripple has opened. The 9-room hotel is unique in that each room is different and furnishings come with a story. Some of the drapes are made from material from the old Merrill Stage (formerly located on the property). Wood from an old barn was also used as well as 2 chairs from one of the houses that is now part of the hotel. One room has a fireplace (and is one of two suites). One room I saw has a beautiful view of the White River. A bar open to the public opens next month. Room rates are around $179. New Garden along Monon Spruced Up On May 4, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s 90 volunteers helped plant the new Bill Brink Memorial Garden along the Monon Trail from 65th to 67th Street. According to Linda Shikany, owner of Marigold, this new garden will feature native plants including flowering plants, shrubs, and trees.
Mini vegetables and freshly made guacamole now at the market We have two new vendors at the Saturday Farmers’ Market behind BR High School. Indiana Microgreens sells miniature versions of vegetables such as mustard, radishes, and the like. They are great in salads or eaten raw. (www. indianamicrogreens.com) Also new is Guacamole stand which makes the guacamole at the market. They also sell baked tostadas made with no oil, as well as salsa, key lime pie and more. All ingredients are fresh. (www.weguacyourworld.com) Welcome to these two new healthy food options at the Farmers Market which in recent years has also added “Fair Food” – lemon shake ups, sugary popcorn and the like. Until lemons are grown on trees in Broad Ripple Park, I’d like local, healthy nearby farm options better. New trails completed The new east bound Fall Creek Trail off the Monon Trail is open. This trail takes off from the Monon Trail and runs to Pennsylvania Avenue and provides a new option for bicyclists going to the Near Northside. It also recognizes Fall Creek as a beautiful parkway. Also the landscaping along the new trail aside Marrott Park (from 75th to 65th along the east side of College) was completed last week. Crews sprayed straw and grass seed along the new trail. Last call for spring wildflowers See the last of the Virginia bluebells at Holliday Park and Marrott Park. These 2 parks feature great spring wildflowers display known as spring ephemerals as they rush to flower and go to seed before the trees get their leaves. Norma Wallman, author of Wildflowers of Holliday Park, has her book for sale to help you identify the flowers which is available Holliday Park and other locations. At Long Last Spring Mother Nature seems to have finally shed her long underwear and opened the window on the world making it patio/porch/deck drinking season once again. Most of the time such wines are light and refreshing, easy drinking, no thinking bottles. But every once in a while it’s fun to toss in something exotic that causes at least a pause or two before you throw a glass down the hatch. I had a trio of these in hand when I ventured over to a neighbor’s house last weekend for some “serious” porch drinking. Serious as in serious FUN. We explored two off-thebeaten-path wines and a new twist on an old favorite. Lamberti Sparkling Rose Vino Spumante–Once again a DRY twist on an Italian wine most of us have only had when it’s sweet. (Read one of my previous Wine Scene’s about the pleasures of DRY lambrusco). This salmon pink wine is crisp light and a perfect sunset sipper. Lovely aromas and flavors of wild strawberries. Clean dry finish with just enough fizz to give a surprising lift and lightness on the palate. Barefoot “Refresh” Crisp White, California–The Barefoot label is one you can trust. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bottle of any of the varietals produced that weren’t tasty. This one too is an easy drinker made from chenin blanc and riesling. Aromas and flavors of apricots, green apple and honeydew melon. A slight effervescence that zips up the finish a bit. Screw cap and super affordable. Chill it and swill it. Add some frozen raspberries, blueberries and serve in a champagne flute for fun. 2008 Chateau Harlaftis Cabernet Sauvignon, Region of Attica, Greece–Old world style dry red; notes of “barn yard” often found in Bordeaux, that mushroom, leather, tobacco, wet hay sort of smell. Some like it, some do not. Smooth on the palate then ends with chewy tannins. This one does need food. Preferably Greek which is why it’s a staple on the Greek Islands restaurant menu. Opa! Jill A. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter A+ Outdoor Activity Note to parents: Tired of rushing kids to after-school activities, bothered by the cost of sports, music, and dance lessons or Tae Kwan Do? Weary from all the effort of keeping children as programmed as their friends? Wondering what longterm effect all the electronic and digital contact will have on your youngster’s behavior? Here is a simple resolution: unplug, go outside, and take a deep breath…with your kids. Try a new tack. Begin observing the environment. Your yard, greenways, parks offer amazing adventures that can rival the best of PBS programs. You don’t have to go far or incur expense. Start exploring. One of the best ways to engage with your yard and your neighborhood is to start bird watching. Parents who want their children to progress with this hobby can tap into Indiana Young Birders Club. This youth organization is under the auspices of the Indiana Audubon Society (www.indianaaudubon.org), and you can get your kids connected through the society’s Facebook page. Birdman Gray, who has led many local bird watching hikes and worked with the IYBC Cool Creek Park in Carmel, tells me how fun it is to bird with kids because of their joy and curiosity. It’s rewarding to turn them on to something other than a computer game or phone app. Did you realize bird watching is the purest form of mobile interaction? The best part of this activity is the whole family can enjoy watching birds – at home, on the Monon Trail, or in one of our parks. You can do it anywhere, anytime, and for as long as you want. The only demands are what you yourself impose. So if you want to get started… 1. Slow down and look up. 2. Spot a bird, have everyone see it, identify it (You may need to use an app, a field guide, or a human guide). You can identify birds by noting their shapes or hearing their songs. 3. Additional activities can involve making lists of birds that have been seen by day, by location, by season; draw what you have seen; photograph the birds. In addition to Eagle Creek, Marion College, and the Indianapolis Park System nature programs, I googled “Birding in Indianapolis” and was pleased to find a wonderful Indy.gov site. It is the Birding Trail of Indianapolis. This internet site guides local residents and out-of-town guests to some of the well-known spots and hidden gems for birders and nature lovers within Marion County.
From the Indy.gov site. Bird watching is an expansive hobby. From my own experience, once young children learn their birds, they never forget them. This information seems to stay with you for life. Unlike many childhood activities, bird watching and bird feeding have lasting imprints. According to the Young Birders Facebook, “Birding today, Protecting tomorrow.” Your child can be the next friend of nature. So take kids outside. Engage another family or their pals in a friendly competition; explore Broad Ripple and Marion County. Learn about your country from a “bird’s eye” view.
