The 41st annual Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association (MKNA) Home and Garden Tour is Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As one of the oldest residential tours in Indiana, creative interior design and recent renovations are reflected in each house. Flo Barnes is the event’s Public Relations Chair. “For the past two years I’ve been involved with the home tour as a member of the marketing committee. I enjoy getting to know my neighbors, the neighborhood and being inspired by the beauty of the old homes in the area,” she said. MKNA’s Home & Garden advance sale tickets can be purchased at www. MKHomeTour.com for $15 each. They are also available at: The Fresh Market (5415 North College Avenue), G. Thrapp Jewelers (5609 North Illinois Street) and National Bank of Indianapolis (4930 North Pennsylvania Street). Tickets are available at tour homes during the event for $20 apiece. Citizens Energy Group, John Eaton Homes and Litz Real Estate are the Platinum sponsors for this year’s home tour. Gold Sponsors are Indianapolis Power & Light, Sullivan Hardware and F. C. Tucker. Individuals interested in volunteering as docents for the home tour can learn interesting facts about the residence where they work. They can receive a free ticket to see tour homes as well. A sign up form can be found through MKNA’s website. MKNA’s Annual Twilight Tour & Silent Auction is Friday, June 6 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the grounds of Immaculate Heart of Mary School at 317 E. 57th St. Tickets for this event are also available through MKNA’s website. “The evening includes a sneak peek inside two beautiful Meridian-Kessler homes which will not be a part of the Home & Garden Tour, as well as dinner, dancing and a great silent auction - all under a gorgeous, white party tent. There’s no better way to kick off the summer! Mab Graves is a Contemporary Pop-Surrealist artist and illustrator living and painting in a converted 1800’s tavern in a small corner of the dusty Midwest. Her work is inspired deeply by fairy tales and old classic literature. She adores narrative. She blames this on her parents who unrelentingly read aloud to her and her three sisters as small, impressionable children. Mab’s passion for creation has been an overwhelming obsession since she could grip a crayon, at about the age of 6 months. She spent her childhood and teen years adoring graphite and pen mediums (but being very suspicious of paints) until she discovered painting in early 2009, and then it was all over. A self-taught artist, Mab’s work has been shown is galleries both nationally and internationally. Her work has been sold in more than 56 countries. Mab’s art has appeared in many print articles in books and magazines and in 2013 she published her first book of paper dolls with Dover Publishing. She currently lives, works and dreams in Indianapolis, IN. Random Ripplings The Broad Ripple Bands 2014 End-of-Year Concert was held at Broad Ripple Magnet High School on May 21 in the gymnasium. Multiple bands performed. (Roughly) Left to Right in the upper photo: Rocket & Ripple Bands, Band from Nicholson Performing Art Academy at School 70, BR Concert Band, BR Wind Ensemble, Rocket Percussion Ensemble and The Spirit of Broad Ripple Drumline. BR bands were led by Director of Bands Tom Ewigleben and Assistant Director of Bands John S. Hague. Magnet Professional Jill Moore assisted in conducting in the Grand Finale. The School 70 band was directed by Michele Pickard.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Todd Snider Friday, May 30 Radio Radio 1119 Prospect Street 21+, doors 8:00, show 9:00, $30
I am excited about this show! I just finished Todd Sniders’ book, I Never Met A Story I Didn’t Like (Mostly True Tall Tales), and loved it. Reading his book is a lot like being at one of his shows, only without the music and the folks singing along. If you’ve seen Snider play, you know that his concerts are a meandering weave of spoken word stories and singing stories delivered by the charmingly barefooted, and most likely high, singer-songwriter. This evening Snider will be reading from his book, playing songs, and answering questions. The book is an ambling collection of half-baked memories, song lyrics, and real-life larger-than-life characters. I love the behind-the-curtain stuff; Jimmy Buffet tossing fruit at Snider’s head – which surprisingly had nothing to do with him dating Buffet’s niece, making records, and road trips with his idol Jerry Jeff Walker and a slew of other musicians. Reading familiar names prompted me to dig though my record collection and spin a Kris Kristofferson album while I was reading. Snider is unabashed about his alcohol and drug use and career mistakes. His openness makes him even more loveable. This show is part of the Sun King Concert Series and will be partially seated (more seats than usual). Advanced tickets available at: www.mokbpresents.com

The Free Range Concert series is taking a field trip from their typical house concert venue in Zionsville. The series is known for their well curated shows and beautiful audience – okay, I might have made the audience part up, but the rest is true. Bill and Kim are moving the show to our neighborhood for a good reason – more room for more fans to hear blues/roots musician, Seth Walker and his band. Indianapolis’ own Kevin Anker will join. Austin, TX based Walker hails from rural North Carolina and grew up in a musical and artistic family has honed Walker for his great stage presence and entertaining show. The Jazz Kitchen has wonderful food, so plan on an evening of dinner and music. You’ll be glad you did!

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

ExactTarget Foundation funds all open Donorschoose.org projects for IPS
On May 6, 2014, the ExactTarget Foundation funded all open classroom projects on DonorsChoose. org for Indianapolis Public Schools and local charter schools. Fifty schools, 99 teachers and nearly 11,000 students were impacted by this donation. Rousseau McClellan Elementary School 91 was one of several IPS schools to have projects funded. Principal Margi Higgs said the donations have helped pay for gym equipment, art supplies, iPads, headphones, African drums and much more. “Students are our first concern,” said Dr. Lewis D. Ferebee, Indianapolis Public Schools superintendent. “As we look to improve our schools, community investment and support from local businesses like the ExactTarget Foundation are key to meeting the needs of students, families and, ultimately, our city.” The ExactTarget Foundation began awarding grants in March of 2013. Since that time, financial gifts have been awarded to organizations and projects that support innovative approaches to combating childhood hunger, increasing access to education and inspiring entrepreneurship. Applications for the next grant cycle will be accepted through June 30, 2014. Interested organizations can apply for a grant on the Foundation’s website at www.exacttargetfoundation.org.
Warfleigh Summer Festival June 14
The Warfleigh Summer Festival will be held on Saturday, June 14 from 6 – 10 pm in the parking lot at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 6050 N. Meridian Street. The festival is designed to provide something fun for the entire family. Live music will be provided by neighborhood favorites Grinning Man. The children’s area will feature a bouncehouse and craft tables, plus the IMPD mounted police will be on hand with their horses. New this year is Genie’s Closet, a fashion boutique truck. Refreshments will be available for purchase from Upland Brewery, Taste of Philly Pretzels, and food trucks MacGenie and Big Ron’s Bistro. The Festival is sponsored by the Warfleigh Neighborhood Association with support from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Let the fun begin! As I write this it is Memorial Day Weekend, the official start of summer activities (although officially still spring). You can’t help but be in a good mood after the longest, coldest most depressing winter anyone alive today can ever remember. The swimming pools are open, the peonies are blooming, the brats are grilling, the race cars are roaring and the neighborhood dining patios are open. Aah, yes the neighborhood. The place you walk your dog, talk with your neighbors about lawn care, wave as you get the morning paper, plan block parties, get sad when for sale signs go up and get happy when new friends move in. What would we do without new friends, old friends and great neighbors? Neighbors are the ones you can call when something unexpected comes up and you know your dog is pacing but you can’t get home to let him out. Neighbors are the ones who have a key chain with yours and others’ keys on it. Neighbors often know your pass codes to your alarm system and when false alarms happen can save the day when you are not home. They can receive the surprise birthday gift you ordered for your spouse that you don’t want to be found for a few more days. They can round up your run-away pet that escaped the yard while you went out for a brief time. They can be there to help pick up the pieces when something tragic happens, which it does. Last night my neighbor held her annual Race Day party. It was bittersweet and as the conversation developed it shaped the content of this column. It made me realize just how wonderful community is and how lucky we are to call this area home. This neighbor lives behind us and I think the real reason we met was because of this loud, boisterous annual party, complete with live band, fireworks (they fell in our pool) and one time wedding ceremony. Most of us that surrounded them on any side or real close got an invitation slipped in our doors. I think they thought it was better to include us than have us call the police for disturbance. This was thirty years ago and still counting. It would go late and was fun for all unless we wanted to go to bed early, which we did by turning on fans for white noise. One year my cat even benefited from the raucous good time. The late night cleanup had been sparse and everyone tore out early the next morning for the track. We were enjoying company sitting by our pool when our cat strolled up the drive with a huge bratwurst that he had salvaged from the party leftovers. Cats like to hunt and I guess he was bringing us his treasure. We still laugh about it. Mostly we laugh at the off color comments that followed. It was all good fun. What makes this bittersweet is that in March, our neighbor and host unexpectedly passed away. The friends this couple has are plentiful. Would this be the end of an era? The end of decades of gathering? I didn’t think so. I knew I was right when I came home one day to a party invitation tucked in the door. When I called to RSVP she and I had a nice chat about how it might be sad but hugs and support would be a welcome thing. Her adult kids would be there coming from their faraway homes. They just wanted to do it. So we all gathered and as parties go we grouped with those we knew. In my case it was with the many neighbors from two streets. Newer neighbors talked about the future. Those of us with lengthy seniority talked about the past which was sprinkled with fun stories but most especially the one about Hollywood. Up and down the street and at the house right across from this party house, about 18 years ago movie crews set up all their gear and multiple trailers that served as dressing rooms and canteens. The house was the family home in the movie. Our neighborhood and The Red Key Tavern were film locations for “Going All The Way” starring a relatively unknown young actor–Ben Affleck. So once again we gathered at our race loving neighbors home, this time camping out on their lawn watching the production. Let me tell you if everyone had heard of Ben Affleck at that time, all of Indianapolis would have been camped out with us. One night time scene had Ben running out of the house and down the street in his Jockey shorts. Not once but three times. He just couldn’t get it right so it was a do over. So now I can say I saw Ben Affleck running down the street in our block in his underwear. This was over Labor Day weekend and this time we were the ones with the loud party at our pool. This drove the film crew crazy as the noise was picked up in the filming, so they devised a relay from the front yard to our back yard telling us to shush when they starting filming and urging us to carry on in between takes. It was a 1950’s era film so all the driveways were fitted with vintage cars. Memories! Please allow to me to be sentimental. Derry, thanks for all the memories you gave our neighborhood. You left us too early. The party wasn’t over. We will all miss you as you walk your little dog around the block and visit with each of us. You were a good friend. You epitomized what a good neighbor is and showed us how to have fun.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will put a 4 in the medium puzzle in the left section of the middle row that contains 1-5-8-9. The 3 in the center section eliminates the two spaces to the right of the 9. The 3 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space to the left of the 8-5. The 3 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 8. Chelsea’s Farewell Party Chelsea’s owners David Matthews and Ellen Morley Matthews (right) threw a big party for employees and customers to celebrate the past 30 years. Broad Ripple Farmers Market Many vendors sell both flowers and vegetables every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon behind Broad Ripple High School. Silverthorn Farms has great tomato plants for just $2. Another great vendor is Bloomers Greenhouse which has petunia baskets. Both vendors are from the Lafayette area.

Rusted Moon Outfitters on Cornell its 12th annual Canoe & Kayak sale. This year however the big hit was the Stand Up Paddleboard. All of you river folks should stop by and check out this unique way of exploring the river that is growing in popularity. General manager, Ron Lewis, said “this year’s sale was one of the best ever.” Customers and shoppers were treated to some, in my opinion, “great” burgers and brats hot off of the grill.

Weavers Weavers has been a mainstay for 54 years. You can find them on Broad Ripple Avenue east of the Village. Tom Weaver is the owner. His sister Pam Cossell also has been with the nursery the whole time. They are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They offer great “combo planters” from local growers – something that you may not find at the big box stores. Weavers get fresh items almost daily. Johnny’s Market Owned by Johnny Dueser and his wife, Johnny’s has been in business for 39 years. Their new tent this year replaces their previous structure which was damaged last year when a truck hit it. They offer flowers, hanging baskets, and more. Soon produce will be available (and vine ripened tomatoes are already being sold). Currently Johnny’s is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays (although after Father’s Day they sometimes eliminate Sunday hours). You can find them on College just north of the Village. Habig Two Village locations -- on 86th Street west of the Nora Kroger and south of the Village on College. They also sell produce later in the season and are open year round with house plants and indoor flowers. Farmers Market News: Fresh juice available through June Through the month of June only, the Natural Born Juices “food truck” will be parking at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market every Saturday morning per owner Laura Beatus. Broad Ripple Author Releases New Book Long time BR resident Ruth Ann Ingraham has released a new book “Cap” Cornish, Indiana Pilot. Clarence “Cap” Cornish was an Indiana pilot whose life spanned all but five years of the Century of Flight. He began flying at the age of nineteen, piloting a “Jenny” aircraft during World War I, and continued to fly for the next seventy-eight years. The book is available from Purdue University Press. www.thepress.purdue.edu/titles/format/9781557536846 Art Fair a Success Despite the cool weather on Saturday, the Broad Ripple Art Fair 2014 was a success with vendors reporting brisk sales, attendees enjoying the art, food, and (new this year) Sun King Beer. Dan Handskillz was one of 2 artists painting an IndyGo bus which featured a picture of their new terminal which opens in 2015. Dan works for Fab Crew (www.fabcrew.com). Music, Truck touching, Food Trucks, swimming and more! There is a lot to do in BR Park this summer! On Friday May 30 at 6:30 p.m., the Tad Robinson Band will play at a concert in Broad Ripple Park. Then on June 13, the Michael Kelsey Group Acoustic Rock will be featured. Other BR Park Happenings: The BR Pool will be open for Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-26), closed May 27-30, and will reopen for the season May 31 with an early close August 3. Garlic mustard invasion blunted at Marrott Park Don Miller of Indy Parks led a group of Indiana Native Plant Society (INPAWs) volunteers in an “attack” on the invasion of the garlic mustard at Marrott Park on Mar 17. The group spent 3 hours which also included pulling out the invasive and non-native amur honeysuckle, the invasive cranberry, and the non-native burning bush. All four crowd out the native wildflowers.

Trail renovations completed at Holliday Park Friends of Holliday Park (FHP) funded and completed extensive trail renovations to one of the park’s most visible trails located just beyond the popular Holliday Park playground. A beautiful new stone staircase replaces the decayed wooden steps. 15 Eastern Cedar trees and 6 Pagoda Dogwoods were planted at the top of the trail. Sunset Sippers I indulged in some of the spectacular sunset sipping weather this past weekend by sampling a few new wines. Actually one is an old favorite that continues to find favor in my glass and budget, Dry Creek Vineyards Chenin Blanc. The other was a new experience so I shared it with my neighborhood tasting panel. The Cavicchioli family has been producing wine in Italy for over a hundred years but didn’t start bottling it for others until 1928. That number is found on the delightfully summer-like 1928 White Spumante Demisec. The bottle is beautifully decorated with what looks like hand painted spring and summer flowers. If nothing else, this wine would make a terrific gift based on the bottle aesthetics on the outside. Fortunately the juice on the inside is just as cheerful. Malvasia is the grape and it lives up to its aromatic abilities. Opening and pouring this slightly sparkling white wine results in an aromatic extravaganza. I found notes of apricot, white peach, honeysuckle and a slight hint of blood orange. Similar flavors are enjoyed in a smooth creamy mouth feel with a hint of sweet wild honey on the finish. Not overly sweet though. This one would be perfect as a brunch wine. We all enjoyed it. One of my favorite grapes is Chenin Blanc which can be done in a dry, sweet or semi sweet style. Dry Creek Vineyards continues to produce a crisp dry version aged in stainless steel so you get to enjoy the fresh aromas and flavors of honeydew melon, and lime with that clean mineral finish. The 2013 Dry Creek Vineyards Chenin Blanc comes in a screw cap and is reasonably priced, widely available and one of the best white wines to enjoy with summer fare. Try it instead of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc and learn why its a terrific food wine. Enjoy it with sushi, grilled chicken or fish, or on its own with cheeses. Jill A. A couple of weeks ago my sister Jenny got off work early and since it was such a nice day she decided to take the opportunity to grab a bike ride around the lovely Butler campus. As she leisurely rode enjoying the outdoors (and not wearing a helmet mind you), suddenly police sirens came up behind her and, sure enough, they were indeed for her. As she stood on the side of the road while the police officer sat for a while in his vehicle she was very confused about what she had done to cause this. The officer walked up to her and asked “Do you know why I pulled you over?” she replied “No.” Then he said that in the last hour eight people including her blew through a stop sign at an intersection. As she told me this story, I remember saying “Are you serious?” and then immediately I regretted uttering those words especially in light of the horrible tragedy of the young man, Neil Kelty who was struck and killed by a school bus last month; not to mention Kelty was obeying traffic laws and wearing a helmet. And it also seems as though these types of accidents are on the rise. The officer wasn’t mad at Jenny because she was annoying him, he was mad because he doesn’t want her to get hit by a car. I am not telling this story to be a martyr as I often ride with Jenny in my goofy flip flops, helmet-less, running stop signs and even sometimes on the wrong side of the road. Dumb? Yes. And if you want to send me an email about how dumb I am well then okay. But from here on out I intend to change that behavior. I think it is awesome how much time, money and promotion that Indianapolis has put forth in the construction, maintenance, and signage of multiple bike lanes and fitness trails. I am impressed that our city is on “the map” along with others that are leaning toward fitness and wellness and away from our lazy and unhealthy reputation. But this doesn’t come without consequence. As these lanes have been popping up, so have the occurrences of bikes and cars alike doing the wrong things in order to peacefully co-exist as “partners” on the road. Until the last few years Indianapolis drivers, in general, weren’t (and aren’t) accustomed to driving around bicyclists on an often basis. Sure one here and there, but not usually every car trip. And that is the first problem of a few. The lanes were created quite quickly, which made the roads more narrow and in some cases, the middle dashed lane lines aren’t even corrected. So, drivers may not be anticipating cyclists and/ or may even be driving in the actual bike lane unaware. And we have all seen dozens of drivers texting while driving! Of course, of course, of course it is not only the drivers’ responsibility to keep the bikers safe. Cyclists share an equal, if not greater since they are in more danger, duty to follow the rules of the road. And sure, they should be ticketed and punished if they do not. Sure it’s nice to bound down the road and not have to stop… but if you don’t you just may be going down it in an ambulance, or even worse, a hearse. So, way to go Indy for taking the strides to make our loved city more travelable other than cars. But it is the citizens’ responsibility to follow its lead by paying attention to safety. Miss B. Ripple - store mistress at Backyard Birds. She has lived in the store since she was adopted from Marion County Animal Control. Her job is looking pretty, sitting in the front window after hours, catching mice, greeting customers, and shedding. She is a perfect shop cat now serving us for 8 years. Peanut bags are her favorite throne. It is obvious how she got her name, and I bet you can tell me what the B. stands for! She answers to Miss B or Ripple.
Pogo - store cat at Habig Garden Center. Pogo was adopted after being banished from an employee’s grandmother’s home for bad manners. She scratched the sofa. So now she gets to reign over the northeast corner of 52nd and College. Pogo loves people and is quite vocal about it. She roams the shop. Hunts varmints, and welcomes all who love plants and gardening.
Toni Kanaan - Good luck charm at Agrarian, 49th and College. Again where there is grain, cats are a necessity. Toni was a walk-on at her owner’s house on race day. Andrew’s favorite driver is Tony Kanaan so he dubbed her Toni. The irony is that Tony went on to win the race that day. Her name stuck. So Toni lives at Agrarian, works and greets customers. Not looking like she’s missed a meal. She’s not to be confused with a stuffed chicken.
Here’s Thunder, longest running employee of the month. Pak Mail on 62nd Street hired him at 2 years of age because of his fantastic resume. He is a rehome and totally appreciates living onsite. Thunder, like all BR cats, is a model retail citizen. He sits in front of the cash register to greet customers and accept as much attention as possible. Sad update - RIP: Thunder served well.
Feral cats are part of the Broad Ripple scene too. Thanks to the Pawnshop, a colony of cats are being well cared for. This is Nacho. He started at Backyard Birds as a kitten but ran away before he got adopted. He is living a sweet life at the Pawnshop.
Jack is our senior cat. He lives and works at Chelsea’s in Broad Ripple. He loves the gifts, jewelry, and décor that he gets to supervise. This 15-year-old cat has only one eye. As a kitten Jack was injured, and the options to fix his injury were to sew his lid shut or implant a prosthetic eye. Now his real lens covers it so he can move his eye but he can’t see. Along the way he felt the need to jump from a counter to the floor and broke a leg. He now sports a pin in his leg. Hopefully Jack has seven more stages to his life and will retire well as the Chelsea closes its doors. If you need a cat fix, stop at any of these Broad Ripple retailers and enjoy a purr, a pet, and take home a bit of fur. I apologize if I have missed other felines of Broad Ripple.
