Deb Wolinsky receives Hubbard Teacher Award Deb Wolinsky is one of four Indianapolis Public Schools teachers named as the first recipients of the Hubbard Life-Changing Teacher Award, and each received a $25,000 prize, announced United Way of Central Indiana. In almost four decades of teaching, Deb Wolinsky’s caring for each student was a common theme of nominators. And, it’s the kind of caring that comes without an expiration date on commencement day. One former student related how she even returned to her math teacher for help passing her first college math course. Another recalls how her teacher devoted every Tuesday and Thursday to checking her homework. Without that help, the student doubts she would have graduated. Yet another student credits Wolinsky with sparking in her a love for service-learning. Wolinsky encouraged the young girl to join Key Club. When her single mother could not afford the dues, Wolinsky paid them. Though the student’s family sought help from various human service providers including the Julian Center, a Salvation Army shelter and Dayspring Shelter, Wolinsky’s student relates that she was “strengthened by Ms. Wolinsky to continue in service projects to others, while I was homeless myself.” After graduating from Broad Ripple, the student went on to college at Butler where her teacher’s influence inspired her to rekindle a Kiwanis collegiate club. She subsequently supervised more than 11,000 students in Indiana University’s Bloomington service learning program and even started a new nonprofit organization that provides personal development workshops for Indianapolis Public Schools students. “Ms. Wolinsky has not only made a difference to my life, she has strengthened me to mentor others,” wrote her former student. Wolinsky’s impact on students amounts to more than gratitude. It shows up in meaningful data too. Over the past five years, every one of her graduating seniors has been accepted into a post-secondary institution.

Broad Ripple is my favorite neighborhood in Indianapolis. I moved here a few years ago and can’t imagine living anywhere else. This area is so vibrant and lively, filled with lots of great restaurants and shops and is close to downtown also! When I heard about this Celebration of the Broad Ripple Gazette I immediately wanted to participate, and envisioned a design that reflects the excitement and spirit of the neighborhood. It seemed that it should be very colorful and have a lot of motion to it. I chose felt as the medium, and seed beads and stitching to form the letters. I actually have a background in Printmaking; I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received an MFA (and BFA) while there. So many of the interests that I have relate back to printmaking in an abstract way; a love of process and multiples, of pattern and color. Other ways of creating that I love involve painting and making jewelry; these different methods are analogous to having a taste for something – sometimes you want a pizza, sometimes a salad. Art for me is a way to relax, challenge myself and try out different methods of problem solving. Although I’ve been back in Indianapolis for several years now, it is only now that I’ve had the opportunity to spend time pursuing these things that have real value to me. My jewelry can be found locally at Arts A’ Poppin on Massachusetts Ave. Etsy: CMarieColeman Facebook: CMarieColeman Twitter: @cmariecoleman

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt at Glendale By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com Marian Mosior and Ginnie Yang co-own Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt store, located at 6161 Keystone Avenue, Suite 700, in Glendale Town Center. They recently described the kinds of yogurt they sell. “We have four major types of frozen yogurt with different flavors that are made from organic milk from Scott’s Brothers Dairy Farm in California. Menchie’s frozen yogurt does not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup or recombinant growth hormone (rBST). All Menchie’s frozen yogurt contains live probiotics. The four main types of frozen yogurt are: (1) Plain – this type of yogurt is added with different natural ingredients to introduce different flavors; (2) No Sugar added (NSA), traces of natural sugar from food itself is in this type of yogurt. No additional sugar is added. (3) Tart – This type of yogurt has similar properties as Greek yogurt. We also have various fruity mix-in to make flavored tart. (4) Low Carb NSA – this type of yogurt has low carbohydrate contents and has about onethird of the caloric content as the plain yogurt. In addition to these four types of yogurt, we also offer Menchie’s private collection of sorbet for people who lactose intolerant or do not like milk-derived desserts,” she explained. “All Menchie’s yogurt is made from organic milk fermented with probiotics. In addition to two probiotics, which are always present in every yogurt sold in the USA, there are four Menchie’s special probiotic strains which offer additional benefits,” Ms. Yang added. Menchie’s also offers 30 Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt different dry toppings, 12 chill 6161 Keystone Ave [II32] bar toppings and four different sauces to allow guests to create (317) 257-5510 their own yogurt mix,” she said. www.menchies.com Some of the ingredients are cool whip, fudgy brownies, Reese’s peanut butter cups, apple cinnamon, colored mocha, strawberries, maraschino cherries, fresh pineapple and bananas. Yogurt and Sorbet store displays list calorie information, gluten free, kosher, live and active cultures and no high fructose corn syrup labels as well to help consumers identify their preferences. Marian and Ginnie are PhD research scientists who have worked in the biotech industry for the past 10 years. They met at the University of California of San Diego. He earned his master’s degree in physics and his doctorate in biophysics from Wrocław University, located in his native Poland where he enjoyed eating yogurt as a child. Ginnie is a native of Ch’ingshuei, Taiwan, who earned her doctorate in biochemistry from the Ohio State University. Their science background in researching cures for diseases draws a parallel in offering customers a variety of yogurt in various flavors. “We were interested in doing some kind of small business and out of all the options that we had considered, I think the one this one provides the healthiest products. It’s easy. The main reason is the product because it’s healthy. Healthy

food is the best preventative medicine,” Ms. Yang noted. They also offer freshly made waffle cones. One of Menchie’s specialties is a chocolate covered waffle cone that is made fresh in the store. They develop a different flavor each month that is added to their collection of yogurt. When customers visit, they will see different varieties of yogurt at different times depending on their availability. The also sell pencils, buttons lip balm and beanie hats. “We offer pre-packs of 16 ounces and 32 ounces of yogurt that can be carried out and served at home or taken on picnics during the summer. Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Musical Family Tree 10th Anniversary Celebration Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21
Musical Family Tree (like the Gazette) is celebrating ten years of Broad Ripplebased awesomeness. MFT is an online archive of Indiana music and band history. I can’t tell you how many times in my years of writing this column that I reference the website and every time I poke around there I find music from favorite bands and discover new and fun things. When I clicked on the website to get the details about the celebration I found something that made me laugh out loud: a band cleverly named “Patachou,” submitted songs named after the omelets at the 49th and Pennsylvania café. Those and thousands of other original songs are available for free download on the site. Musical Family Tree is hosting two nights of Indiana based bands in celebration of their anniversary. A ticket for the Friday night concert includes tickets for Saturday night. You can also purchase tickets for Saturday night only.

Global Beatles Day Wednesday, June 25
Faith Cohen founded Global Beatles Day in 2009 as a way to honor the Beatles’ collective impact on the world. The Beatles performed All You Need Is Love on the first live global television broadcast. 400 million people watched on June 25, 1967, kicking off the Summer of Love. On June 25 create your own love letter to the Beatles and spin a record, dance around your kitchen, let your hair fall over your eyes, and remember this line from the song, “And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love, you make”

Community of Hostellers Excited about Future Recently the first annual Heartland Hostel Summit took place at Indy Hostel in the SoBro neighborhood of Indianapolis. 25 hostel owners and staff from around the Midwest area came together in the spirit of sharing and partnership to find ways to improve and promote hostelling in the US. The two-day event was an open forum with discussions ranging from improving guest services, enhancing social media and online marketing (Dan Fahrner from the marketing and web design firm SmallBox was in attendance as the Guest Speaker), opening new markets and possible methods of collaboration. “Our goal is to bring travelers from around the world to the Midwest and keep them interested in exploring the region,” said one hostel owner. This was also a chance for many of the owners to meet each other for the first time and learn about what the surrounding cities have to offer. Each hostel in attendance was unique in style, location, and personnel but they all share their passion for hostelling and dedication to making hostels a popular stop for all travelers in the United States. “Most guests who are first time hostellers tell us they will be back in the future, realizing that a “locals only” restaurant tip, guided tour from a hostel staff member, or an unexpected conversation with a fellow traveler is all it took to make them fall in love with a city.” Especially now that most hostels offer private accommodation with en-suite restrooms as an option, these hostels hope the next time you take a trip you will experience a hostel for yourself.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Vintage Vogue by GW – A Unique Boutique Opening Near Glendale
Calling all Indy fashionistas and thrifty shoppers! No time for a Goodwill shopping hunt? Now you can dash in for an upscale or vintage find while still supporting education and employment opportunities in Central Indiana. Vintage Vogue by GW opens its first Indianapolis location in the Glendale area, June 17 at 8 a.m. at 2361 E. 62nd Street. A boutique brand of Goodwill, Vintage Vogue features a unique shopping experience with merchandise from select donations that have been identified as high-end or vintage. Customers can shop from a mix of chic, modern fashions and one-of-a-kind classics, including women’s and men’s clothing and distinctive furniture. “Any item donated to Goodwill has potential to be a ‘gem’ for some customer, but Vintage Vogue offers a collection of those ‘gems’ without the hunt,” said Eric Schlegel, Goodwill’s vice president of retail operations. Twelve jobs were created thanks to this new location. All Goodwill stores will continue to carry great finds and offer the “thrill of the hunt” experience. Shoppers will find the boutique’s carefully selected merchandise of more than 10,000 unique items, appealing prices and inviting displays at the corner of 62nd St. and Keystone Ave., where the new store has more than 3,800 square feet, three spacious dressing rooms and dedicated parking. Like the more than 50 central Indiana Goodwill retail stores, Vintage Vogue features a 50-percentoff storewide sale on the first Saturday of every month and a 30-percent-off sale for seniors 55+ on Wednesdays. The Goodwill Rewards card is also valid for Vintage Vogue purchases. Goodwill’s first Vintage Vogue boutique opened in Bloomington in 2011. Revenue generated from sales of new and donated goods helps fund education and employment in central Indiana. For more information, go to vintagegw.org .

IUPUI fee waived for IPS applicants
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will waive a $50 admission application fee for all Indianapolis Public Schools students, beginning with IPS students who graduate in spring 2015 and apply for admission in fall 2015. The move dovetails with a plan IPS adopted May 27 to provide a free breakfast, lunch and snack of fresh fruit or vegetables to all its students. “This is wonderful news for IPS and an example of partnerships that work. IUPUI joins us in promoting the philosophy that post-secondary education is a platform that offers young people stronger opportunities to excel in life,” said Lewis D. in many ways that IUPUI is a strong supporter of Indianapolis Public Schools; waiving the application fee further illustrates their ongoing commitment to our students’ success.” IUPUI waives the application fee for IPS students and students from other school systems who received free and reduced-price lunches and whose counselors submit waiver requests. Overall, about 20 percent of students applying to IUPUI have their application fees waived. This year, nearly 80 percent of the 30,800 IPS students qualified for free meals based on their family income. About half of the students from IPS who applied to IUPUI seek the application fee waiver. Now all IPS students will receive that benefit.

Indy Library Trustees Adopt New Plan for Services Through 2020
After 10 months of citizen input, research and assessment, The Indianapolis Public Library Board of Trustees has approved a strategic plan, “Yours to Experience,” to define the Library’s role and scope of services in the community for the years 2015-2020. The plan includes realigning branch locations to maximize access, reducing or eliminating the leasing of facilities, and developing new relationships with community centers and other partners. To reduce geographical gaps in service, the Library would add a new location in Lawrence Township which is presently inadequately served by current locations. A relocation of the Eagle Branch would provide ADA access and improve service in the West 38th Street/Lafayette Road redevelopment area. The Brightwood and Glendale branches, two of four branches which now require lease payments totaling over $330,000 per year, would be relocated into Library-owned facilities in those vicinities. Guided by a citizen-led Steering Committee co-chaired by Carey B. Lykins and Hope Y. Hampton, the planning process began in July 2013 by identifying issues of importance to the community. It generated input from nine Task Forces comprised of representatives from over 150 businesses and organizations, as well as from public surveys and feedback from 23 community presentations on the proposed plan. Local demographic studies and assessments on patron usage and the condition of Library facilities also were considered. To learn more about the Library’s Strategic Plan for the years 2015 – 2020, visit http://www.imcpl. org/strategicplan/.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will put a 1 in the easy puzzle in the left section of the top row that contains 3-6-9. The 1 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the two spaces below the 6. The 1 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above the 3. The 1 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 3. The only space left is directly above the 9. You have now learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Electric car sharing headed to the Ripple Did you just miss your bus from downtown back to Broad Ripple (like I did last Saturday) and don’t feel like waiting for the next one (which was over an hour later). Do you want to avoid the $20+ taxi fare to the Ripple? Soon you will have a third option -- you can use Indy’s new electric vehicle car sharing system to get home. Called BlueIndy, the electric vehicles are already in service at 100 E. Washington downtown. In a partnership with the City and Bolloré Group of France, Indianapolis is rolling out a new electric vehicle car sharing service. One of the stations will be in Broad Ripple. Another will be at 86th and the Monon Trail, and at Keystone Fashion Mall. The Bolloré electric vehicle car sharing program has been a big hit in Paris, Lyon (France), and London. Indy is the first city in North America to receive the program. The program will be funded via a $16 million rate increase request by IPL. The case is currently pending before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. For more information, see the press release at www.indy.gov

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
ANOTHER GRAPE DAY IN INDIANA Bacchus smiled on the 15th edition of Vintage Indiana this year. What started in the year 2000, with a dozen wineries, a hand full of food vendors and a few musical acts gathered in Military Park downtown, has now grown into the “biggest celebration of Indiana Wines”. Visitors pay one price and get to sample wines from many of the state’s wineries. You can pay for a full glass or buy a bottle to sip on site. Or enjoy what has become one of the best ideas in the wine festival business: A Pick Up Tent. Visitors purchase bottles to go, get a claim tag, then at the end of the day, pull up their car and their case is ready. This year 30 wineries were on site. 17 food vendors offered food and the music line up included Zanna Doo, My Yellow Rickshaw and Jennie DeVoe. My role for the past 15 years has been to emcee the Wine and Food Experience pavilion. Here we offer a series of cooking demonstrations featuring Indiana product plus the chance to educate guests on food and wine pairing, wine styles, history of grapes, and the many new Indiana wine trails. The record breaking crowd on Saturday, June 7th (10 thousand PLUS) was impressed with the variety and quality of Indiana wines they were tasting throughout the day. Guests raved over Butler Winery’s Chambourcin and Winzerwald’s Schweizer Spice. French Lick Winery offered up a Sparkling Catawba Wine that rivals any west coast sparkler. Many Indiana wineries still create tasty bottles of wines from native American grapes like Niagara and Concord. But more are taking the chance and doing an Indiana take on Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Zinfandel and even Pinot Noir. Once again, these wines are done in the spirit of “terroir” so it IS Indiana, not France or California. But it IS Indiana, and for that, each is worth a try. Winemaking is farming, chemistry, passion and prayer. The past winter was brutal on many of the vineyards. Jim Butler at Butler Winery told me he has to pull out his Cabernet Franc vines because they did not survive the weeks of subzero temperatures. His Chambourcin and Chardonel took a hit too but he said he will have enough to create a 2014 vintage. Meanwhile Jim Pfeiffer at Turtle Run told me his Vignoles survived and he is happy with the forecast for his crop this year. Bob Kraft with the Indy Wine Trail told guests about some of the NEW wines featured by the six wineries on the central Indiana route. Easley Winery’s new Sweet Tulip is available at local grocery stores. Cedar Creek Winery in Martinsville is doing an interesting take on Pinot Noir. And Mallow Run offers a delightful rendition of Indiana’s signature grape, Traminette. Karen Lackey from the Indiana Turkey Council wowed guests with her creative take on Apple Pie Turkey Salad. Michelle Plummer with the American Dairy Association created a finger licking good Caprese Cottage Cheese Dip that gave guests a new respect for the curd. Chef Ben from Clark’s Appliance stole the show with his BBQ 101 lesson and tasting of Beef Tri Tip marinated in herbs and spicy sauce. (Did I tell you guests get to sample all of the food cooked during our four demo’s as well? ) If you’ve never been, then be sure to mark the June date for 2015 on your calendar. Or check out Uncork The Uplands on Saturday August 2nd. www. uncorktheuplands.com This event takes place IN the vineyards at Oliver Winery in Bloomington. It is an up close and personal wine experience that shows you just how much hard work goes into planting, nurturing, harvesting, fermenting and creating a bottle of Indiana wine. Visit www.indianawines.org for more on the nearly 70 Indiana wineries, plus wine trails and events. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Warning: This article may sound self-righteous so I apologize ahead of time. I was asked to write my “story” as how I came into what I do (owning a personal training gym) for another publication so I thought I would share! Back in the day in college I knew, for whatever reason, I needed to do something for my life living that was also a hobby. Maybe because I heard about others complain about hating their careers but loving this or that as a pastime…or maybe not. I’m actually not sure sadly but I was stuck on that route for myself. It was just for me and possibly not for everyone I’m sure. At that time in my life I LOVED photography. So, I enrolled my first year at IU in the general blah blahs and after consciously knowing I wasn’t going to be the next Ansel Adams in the art world of photo (which in these days I’m pretty darn glad about that decision…not to date myself but the “internet” came along my sophomore year and clearly the photo world has done a 180). So I instead chose the route of Photojournalism major. Whoops! To my young self the quick realization…that included not just photo; but A LOT of writing classes. Hence why I love using those lessons now for this column. So, I went from being an artsy photographer to taking pictures of car accidents, sports reporters or other random pretty mundane things (keep in mind this is college so nothing high profile). Which I don’t discount those that do so whatsoever but back to the hobby theme… So, I then I thought “well I want to be a small business owner”. And at that time all I and my future husband knew was the restaurant gig. We both had worked in those industries so this may be the answer! So, we started our own very tiny spot in a local tennis club. We made the menu, got a beer license (which is no small feat). And we busted our hineys to make it work. Well, it only took a short time to see we didn’t like that life. So THEN I decided to take another chance at a hobby, fitness, and go back to school to see if I would like it. I was scared that it would once again dry out a love that I have/had. My original intent was to do something that sounded “glamorous” with a title like cardiac rehabilitationist for example. I will never forget that I met with my professor mentor and told him I wasn’t exactly sure what direction to go in. I said “I’m not going to just be a personal trainer.” rolling my eyes. He then said to me “What’s wrong with being a personal trainer? My wife is a personal trainer.” With a little humility, I realized he was right and learned an important lesson. After I graduated I went from working at a couple of huge fitness facilities where I was basically a glorified bulletin board maker and housekeeper. That wasn’t very fulfilling to say the least and if you know me you know that waking up at 4:30 is my version of hell. It wasn’t long before I quit and went back to waiting tables extremely confused and scared about my career path. While I was on a vacation my husband surprised me by building my own tiny “gym” in our home. I took a few clients here and there, but it quickly got a little awkward to have people come to our home. I searched around and found that a local massage business had a basement studio that was just perfect for me at that time. Small but adequate. I started taking clients (mostly regulars from the restaurant) and soon enough, I was able to take the leap into training full time. After a couple of years I felt the need for more space and found my second location which was very exciting for me. I chose my name, my logo, made shirts, had a big open house party, bought more equipment and cardio machines, and before you know it OTHER trainers and instructors asked if they could work for me. WOW!! That was a whole new adventure and for the first time in my life I realized that I could actually make some money while I wasn’t working. A few years after that I knew I need even MORE space and found my amazing location that I am at today. I have 8 trainers and 4 class instructors and I absolutely love what I do!! Some people say to me that they think it is so amazing that I have my own business and that they could never do it. But, honestly, they give me too much credit. I made some well-timed decisions and wasn’t hasty, and it luckily worked out. I live in the best neighborhood in the world with the coolest clients and helping people while having fun is the most amazing job in my opinion. Now if I could only figure out how to get free benefits and paid vacation. ;) I’ve had many ups and downs, made some good and pretty bad decisions but I luckily learned from them. Being an entrepreneur isn’t for everyone and there are many reasons why (ever heard of “The E Myth?). But I do know that it is for me. And I hope that what you do is for you! The bottom line is I just don’t like doing things that I don’t think are fun…probably to a fault at times (like laundry haha). My mantra: Life is Short. Have fun Till next time! Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Summer Time, Beetle Time 7/30/2014
Did you know beetles live everywhere? Did you know beetles comprise the largest group of living organisms known to science, Phyllophaga? Did you realize they were our first “knights in shining armor?” I’m celebrating the June Bug this year. Growing up, June Bugs (or sometimes called May Bugs) along with lightning bugs seem to fascinate all ages. I watch my grandson pick up a beetle and observe it intently. I also remember boys pulling legs off beetles or disembodying lightning bugs trying to figure them out. Oh dear, we weren’t always kind to bugs as we explored our natural world. They come in all sizes from microscopic to quite large. I can remember being in a lighted parking lot on a dark summer night with my father and finding variety of beetles around lamp posts. I hoped they were already dead so I didn’t execute them for my school bug collection. They were always a bit tough to spear with the bug pin and label for the required biology project. I cracked a few because of their body armor. Beetles impact our environment right in our own backyards. Today’s pressing concern is damage they are causing to ash trees. The emerald ash borer has killed millions of trees, which is sad for our yards, parks, and city streets. I hope if you have lost a tree, you have planted a new one so our village is not without a beautiful tree canopy. Rather than plant an ash, try a gingko, which is supposed to be disease resistant. Another beetle that’s “bugging” many of us these days is the Japanese Beetle, disastrous to some of our perennial plants. They love hollyhocks and roses. Have you seen the beetle traps in gardens around the area? I’ve also witnessed folks out picking them off plants, one by one and then drowning them in buckets of water. June Bugs are plant eaters; thus the origin of their genus name Phyllo (leaf) phaga (eater). If you garden or cut grass you may overlooking a life cycle of the beetle. If you see a mass of small white eggs…the beetle, then as they develop; if you see a grub….the beetle. Then they appear in summer as armored June Bugs. Many die after over exposure to light. I now know why I found dead ones under light posts. So be aware that grubs eat grass roots and vegetables, and mature June Bugs chew foliage of trees and shrubs. That’s why many homeowners resort to insecticides for grubs. One more fact: June Bugs develop from egg to larva to pupa and finally to adult. Their life cycle can be up to four years; with two to three of those years being underground. One in five organisms (including plants) is a beetle. There are over 350,000 species of beetles, and they have been around for 230 million years. The beetle family has long captured our imaginations -- from lightning bugs in jars to beetles on leash-strings. So to finish this summer reflection, I am including a poem by the poet laureate of Tennessee, Richard “Pek” Gunn 1904 ~ 1995.
June Bug on a String
In days way back on Tumbling Creek The latter part of spring Twas sport for every boy to have A June bug on a String The bug would fly like all the rest But what impressed me so Was that the length of string controlled Just how far he could go. Some might have thought that he was free to go his way but still I held the string that gauged his flight And pulled him in at will. A man can get entangled too No matter when nor where And set a boundary upon His freedom then and there. He may fly high and buz about And have a mighty fling But after all he’s governed by The one that hold’s the string. VOLUNTEERISM IN THE VILLAGE LEADS TO LARGE IMPACT 2014 is shaping up to be a huge year for volunteerism in the Village. Multiple partners have some to table passionate and motivated to make Broad Ripple a better place and we are so very thankful for their generosity and commitment! Look at all we’ve accomplished.
Bill Brink Memorial Garden Mulching: On May 3rd over 60 volunteers, led in partnership by KIB and the Bill Brink Memorial Garden committee, mulched the garden beds for the soon-to-be-established native garden along the Monon Trail between 65th and 67th Streets. In typical Broad Ripple fashion, always looking for progressive and sustainable techniques to try, we used a demonstration plot in Zone 6 to illustrate “Lasagna Gardening”. This is a method of gardening that adds layers of organic materials (in our case nitrogen, carbon, spoiled straw then finally horse manure) that will “cook down” over time, resulting in rich, fluffy soil. The circular disks are ends of rolls of newsprint that will disintegrate nicely while killing the grass below without chemicals! By fall the beds will be ready for hundreds of native plants. Please consider supporting the Bill Brink Memorial Garden with a donation or by volunteering. Learn more at www.brva.org.
Radiate Church’s Day Benediction Day: On May 4th, over 50 volunteers from Radiate Church came to the Village to complete several projects in partnership with the BRVA and local businesses. For the Broad Ripple Tavern, a team of volunteers painted over graffiti on two large exterior walls on the west side of the building. Another team worked with Half Baked Pottery to clear
overgrown landscaping around the building and prep several garden beds at the front of the property. A third team tackled a Village-wide cleanup, picking up litter and debris from the streets, sidewalks, and alleys. The last group conducted infrastructure assessments in the Village commercial district. The infrastructure assessment, once compiled, will be delivered to the City’s Dept. of Public works to then prioritize for funding and completion. Many thanks to our neighbors at Radiate Church, our partners at KIB, and to our sponsors Bidmead/Younger, who donated supplies for the graffiti cleanup and lunch for the volunteers.
spend all weekend exploring the Village and visiting family discovery sites. On Sunday, join us for a block party on at the Rainbow Bridge featuring even more fun activities, crafts, and entertainment. Register in advance at www.kidstakeover2014.eventbrite.com.
3rd Annual Broad Ripple Brewpub Hoods & Hops Car Show, July 13
Keybank Neighbors Make a Difference: On May 14th, several KeyBank employees traded a day at the office for a day working in the dirt in Broad Ripple. For the fourth year in a row, they partnered with the BRVA to give our beloved community Fire Station some TLC. Volunteers weeded all the garden beds and laid mulch in the beds and along the paver paths. Much gratitude to KeyBank who continues to be a committed community partner.
FEEL LEFT OUT? DON’T WORRY, THERE ARE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP! Do Good, Have Fun with Bud Light and Keep America Beautiful: On Friday, June 27, Bud Light and Keep America Beautiful are partnering with BRVA, Friends of White River and the Carl G. Fisher Society to take on three large projects in the Village. BRVA will lead a cleanup and painting project in the Village. Friends of White River will lead a cleanup along the banks of the White River near the Art Center. The Carl G. Fisher Society will lead invasive removal in Broad Ripple Park. What a day! It will be a happy hour event, so clock out early and head to the Village to DO GOOD and HAVE FUN! We will work on our projects from 4-7 p.m. and then meet up at the Bud Light build-a-bar in Broad Ripple Park for food, drinks, and entertainment. All volunteers must be 21 years old or older and must preregister. Register today at www.upforwhatever.com.
Hoods & Hops is set for Sunday, July 13 at OptiPark, 780 E. 66th Street, from noon until 5 p.m. The event has attracted as many as 100 cars! You don’t need to have a show car to participate; unique, old, interesting cars are all welcome. Car owners just need to show up on Sunday to claim a spot; drive in on 67th Street and a volunteer will greet you. The entry fee is nominal, only $5. There is no admission fee for attendees/spectators. Each attendee will get a ballot to vote for their favorite car. The car with the most votes wins the Best in Show trophy. Food, craft beer (from Broad Ripple Brewpub and other local favorites), and commemorative t-shirts and posters will be for sale.
