Canal Pointe, the largest Broad Ripple development in decades, will move forward now that the Indianapolis City-County Council has approved Proposal 77, which authorizes issuance of an economic development bond not to exceed $7.75 million to support public infrastructure improvements that are part of the project. On June 2, the full council debated the measure and voted against an effort to strip the $30 million project from the proposal. Bipartisan support was evident in the 22–7 vote to pass Proposal 77, which was co-sponsored by at-large Democrat John Barth, council vice president, and Republican Will Gooden, whose District 3 includes Broad Ripple. Proposal 77 also includes provisions for the issuance of up to $1.5 million in redevelopment bonds to fund improvements to Tarkington Park. City officials determined that the projected annual revenue from the North Midtown Tax Increment Finance District (called “Midtown TIF”) would be $580,000 — enough to support debt service for both Canal Pointe and Tarkington Park. TIF district revenues come from new commercial development in the area, not from existing businesses. Community leaders, elected officials and metropolitan development staff crafted the Midtown TIF district to stimulate strategic investments in five key nodes. The projects funded under Proposal 77 are in two of those nodes. The intended effect of such catalytic investments is to provide better neighborhood services, stimulate private investment, create jobs, recycle blighted and obsolescent properties, upgrade infrastructure and link stronger markets to weaker ones. The mixed-use Canal Pointe project on College Avenue will include 35,000 square feet of retail space and 119 apartment units. An estimated $5.7 million in TIF funds will be used for an improved public transit stop on College and enhancements along the north bank of the Central Canal. Developer Browning Investments, Inc. will provide an additional $5.8 million to complete public infrastructure improvements. The project fulfills the Envision Broad Ripple Plan’s goals of increasing residential density and daytime activity in the Village, improving connectivity, spurring mass transit use and enhancing the Central Canal into a linear park. Tarkington Park has long been a key community asset. Approximately 30,000 people live within a 15-minute walk of the 11-acre park. Phase 1 improvements slated for the park’s southwest corner include half-court basketball courts for younger players, a splash park for families, restrooms, improved parking and a new home for the weekly farmers market. In addition to $1 million in TIF funds, the park-centered redevelopment strategy will receive $1 million from the Indy Parks Foundation and $3 million from Rebuild Indy 1 monies. The effort to stimulate additional investment is already working. Midtown Indianapolis, Inc. and Mapleton-Fall Creek Development Corporation partnered to obtain Community Block Development Grant funds to aid façade improvements along the Illinois Street commercial corridor immediately north of 38th Street.

His Broad Ripple-based company provides menu items from 18 local restaurants to satisfy customer palettes. Mark moved with his family to Indy when he was 12 and is a graduate of North Central High School. “I’ve had the entrepreneurial spirit since I was in my teens and the most recent things I’ve done were delivery and sales. After the idea struck Total-Takeout that I could be successful at doing this, I put a business plan in place and hit the pavement. I was born and raised in Indianapolis and live in Broad Ripple with my wife of 20 years, Carole, and our 2 cats: Rosco and Mario. I have been an artist my entire life thanks to the skills passed on to me by my parents. No formal training, just years of practice have honed those skills to their current level, and I am not near done learning. I have dabbled in styles and media over the years and I enjoy experimenting and combining influences. Illustration, Caricature, fantasy art and fine art are all part of my work, but my area of specialty is large scale mural work. From Whimsical and cartoonish children’s rooms and nurseries to sport-themed business lobbies to liquor logos and custom pieces for bars all over Indiana (Look for the Sailor Jerry Mermaid piece at the Sinking Ship!), I have done a little bit of everything so I am comfortable working in many styles. Because of my recent work with Sailor Jerry Rum, I have become fascinated with the SJ style tattoo art, as reflected in this cover piece. In January, I decided to combine my love art, music and performing to create my ABC PAINT PARTY events. In these events, I share the artist experience by taking my attendees step by step from blank canvas to completion in recreating one of my pieces. The Paint Parties are held in various bars and restaurants in the Broad Ripple area such as Binkley’s and Union Jack Pub. Attendees of annual BRHS Reunion for classes of the 30s & 40s
The annual reunion for Broad Ripple High School classes of the 1930s and 1940s was held on June 1 at the Riviera Club. About 30 alumni and guests attended the brunch buffet. Four alumni of the McClure family attended - Jim, Bob, Dick and Sara. After the brunch, John D. Hague presented on the recent activities and scholarships of the BRHS Alumni Association and the website www.brhsalumni.org. This reunion is open to all 30s-40s alums and is held on the first Sunday each June. the bigger cities, like Chicago, New York City and San Francisco, you can get many things delivered beyond food, but in Indianapolis, the industry as a whole is relatively new. It’s beginning to take off as people are becoming aware that this service exists,” he explained. Total-Takeout’s delivery area is set up by zip code, but will consider going beyond this area on a case-by-case basis. The boundaries are approximately 96th street to the north, Hague Road to the east, Township Line Road to the west and 38th street to the south. Some of their neighborhoods include Broad Ripple, Butler-Tarkington, Meridian Hills, Meridian-Kessler and Nora. The restaurants that Meisinger and his staff deliver food from have discovered new customers they might not otherwise have. In turn, these customers have gained access to a diversity of local cuisine, literally, at their fingertips. Customers can view restaurants menus on-line before ordering without leaving their residence or workplace. “Our motto is ‘Delivering Dining Diversity.’ Customers often request to have their favorite restaurants added. Offering many different cuisines and delivering it to your home or office is what this business is all about. Caplinger’s Fresh Seafood Market and Restaurant, Marco’s Restaurant & Lounge and Jordan’s Fish, Chicken & Gyros are our latest additions. We are always looking to add new restaurants to our delivery menu because having many different options is important to us,” Meisinger mentioned. “On June 1, we celebrated our one year anniversary; however, it’s been two years since the idea was conceived. At that time, I began buying delivery bags, setting up the computer software system and building car topper signs by hand. Working the blue color scheme, I chose everything from the table cloth design on the logo to the blue delivery bags that were important to me. There wasn’t any local food delivery service that I knew of that had a blue color. I wanted to stand out and be noticed,” he said. Total-Takeout’s hours are 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. seven days a week. They have really embraced the business in its first year and for that, I am truly grateful. I would especially like to thank my family, friends and employees. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

‘Vocal Throwdown’ offers amateurs chance to sing at ISF
The Indiana State Fair is now accepting video entries for its second annual ‘Vocal Throwdown’ competition that could help aspiring performers launch their musical careers. One champion in each of two divisions will be crowned and awarded cash prizes. Last year, Greenwood country duo South Six 5 won the Junior division (http://bit.ly/1bllQTp) while Indianapolis singer Alie Orebaugh took the Senior division (http://bit.ly/14xYoQQ) The contest is open to any non-professional performer who is 21 years old or younger and a current Indiana resident. The Junior division consists of anyone ages 6 to 15; the Senior division is for anyone ages 16 to 21. A non-professional is defined as anyone who is not a practicing professional making his or her livelihood through musical performing, including anyone who might have a manager, music recording contract or an agreement relating to the use of his or her name or likeness. To enter, competitors need to submit an audition video no longer than five minutes through the official Indiana State Fair Facebook page at http://smarturl.it/VocalThrowdown. Today is the first day for entries, which will continue to be accepted through June 30. From July 7 – 20, all submitted videos will be featured on the Indiana State Fair Facebook page where people will be able to vote for their favorite entries. The top 10 vote-getters in each division will be invited to perform on the State Fair’s Subaru Main Street Stage on Saturday, Aug. 2 where they will sing before a panel of judges. The judges will pare down the competitors to five finalists who will perform again on Aug. 9 when a champion will be crowned. The winners in each division will receive $500, a trophy and a chance to perform during the 2015 Indiana State Fair. Second place finishers will receive $250; third place finishers receive $100. Summer Stock Stage Presents the Rock Musical “Hair”!
Summer Stock Stage will present Hair: The American Tribal Love - Rock Musical at Ayres Auditorium at Park Tudor School June 26-29. Thursday through Saturday performances are at 7:30 pm and Sunday performance is at 2:30 pm. More than 30 of the most talented students from central Indiana have been rehearsing with co-directors, Emily Ristine Holloway and Charles Goad, music director Jeanne Bowling, and choreographer, Cherri Jaffee, to mount this fully-staged and orchestrated production. These students, ages 13-19, come from public, private, and charter schools, from urban Indianapolis, suburban Carmel and rural Thorntown. These are some of the best musical theater performers in the area. Many plan to continue their theater studies in college, while others have entirely different plans. All come together in a professional, collaborative environment to produce outstanding theater each summer. Hair takes place in the 1960s and tells the story of a group of young people searching for love and peace in the Vietnam era. One of Broadway’s first rock scores, this upbeat, hopeful musical features “Good Morning Starshine,” and “Let the Sun Shine In.” All tickets are $17. (Hair contains mature content and is recommended for ages 13+.) Patron Reception, Friday, June 27 at 6 pm – Prior to Friday’s performance, there will be a groovy patron reception featuring the artistic staff in Foster Hall at Park Tudor School. Today I read the column written by Indy Star columnist Bob Kravitz commenting on the racist nickname given to the Washington football team…Redskins. It took me way back to the old TV shows and the Wild West. The favorites were Wagon Train, Gun Smoke, Bonanza and the Lone Ranger. Hollywood starred John Wayne in westerns. I can’t imagine how politically incorrect those days were. But in traveling down memory lane it brought me back to my first dog and my childhood on Winthrop Avenue, you know that little street that’s more apt to be called “The Monon” than anything else. It really was a different time. We kids would go out and play all day without helicopter parents (they weren’t needed). Somehow we always played Cowboys and Indians. It wasn’t my favorite because as a young girl I had long braids so you can guess who was always the Indian squaw tied to the tree. This really upset my dog Prince who was a German Shepherd mix. Also in those days dogs ran pretty free and when I went out to play he was the watch dog who followed me everywhere. If anybody messed with me he was on it. Most of the time it infuriated me and I just wanted him gone. I would yell and scream and beat at him to go home but he just sat there, so much older and wiser than I. I was probably 6 or 7 and he twice that. I was his charge and he took it seriously. One day after a heavy rain the basement in our little bungalow flooded deep (I wonder if they still do on Winthrop) and old Prince was downstairs and couldn’t make it up. My heroic big brother went down and hauled this big heavy dog up the flight and out of the mess. Such a brave and courageous dog became a silly sissy when it thundered and would hide under the bed or work his way around between the wall and the claw foot bathtub (remember those? No I’m not eighty). Our next door neighbor, Dr. Bartlett, was a veterinarian and one day he came home after work and put Prince to sleep in the summer shade of our backyard. That night I climbed into my Daddy’s lap and cried like a baby never realizing until I was older that he was probably crying too. Now every time I am online and prompted to create a password with a security clue I always think of Prince when one of the clues given is the name of your first pet. I wonder if the memories happen to you as well when you see that security question. The season of fireworks and thunderstorms are upon us and if your dog is a sissy like Prince, I have some suggestions. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will put a 7 in the easy puzzle in the right section of the middle row that contains 2-3-4-9. The 7 in the middle section of the middle row eliminates the two spaces to the left of the 3. The 7 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 2. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 3-4. The only space left is directly below the 9. You have now learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Bar opens along the Monon Trail What? Another bar in the Ripple. Yes, but one for adults and right on the Monon. The Hotel Broad Ripple has opened a new bar which is open to the public. The “bar” features outdoor seating on the grass in the back of the hotel (facing the Monon Trail). According to night manager Brett Davis, they will offer a rotating selection of craft beers (a recent posting showed a pale ale offered at $5) plus light snacks such as cheese and fruit. They are open from 5 pm. to 10 p.m. during the week and from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.

BR Farmers Market offers creamery, sets July music schedule If you are like me, first thing every Saturday is a trip to the Broad Ripple Farmers Market. There is always something new, like the new creamery/cheese stand known as The Tulip Tree Creamery. Their butter is made with cultured cream. Their Fromage Frais cheese is a soft creamy herb cheese spread and is made out of whole cow’s milk and cream. It sells for $6. The fresh mozzarella is unique and sells for $4 or $7. This new business does not have a regular store so you can only buy their products here. In other market news, Jinny Sauer Bastinanelli, newsletter creator for the Market, sent me the July music schedule for the market: July 5 - Dave Duvall, July 12 - Chad Mills, July 19 - Dianna Davis, July 26 - Brearton & Hughes.

Used bikes and trade-ins a feature at SoBro bike shop The Bicycle Exchange is celebrating its first year at its new location, 1053 E. 54th Street (right off the Monon Trail). This SoBro store not only sells new bikes but you can trade your old one in. It also sells used bikes and repairs bikes as well. Their hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. (They are closed Monday.) Their number is 602-3316. (They are located set back from the street, somewhat hard to notice.) Work continues on the native plant garden along the Monon Trail Chris Turner, noted area horticulturalist, is working on the new native plant garden which will honor Bill Brink. The Bill Brink Memorial Garden will run along the Monon Trail up to the Indianapolis Art Center. It will feature plants native to the Midwest (as well as native trees and shrubs). The Bill Brink Memorial Garden honors our former BR “Mayor”. Funding is from INPAWS (the native plant society) and Marigold (owner Linda Shikany). Turner is a volunteer who also runs his own landscaping service and also teaches gardening to volunteers every other Friday at the “dig n discuss” class/volunteer session. New exhibit opens at Art Center It’s going to be a summer of fine art, creative performance and community building at the Indianapolis Art Center. Storytellers, the summer exhibition series brings together a variety of artists, performers and community groups whose works tell stories. Stop by our local city pool and enjoy the new mural (see picture) The BR pool is open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. through 6 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. Admission is just $3 ($2 for seniors over 55). But hurry they close August 3. BR Park events Don’t miss Wizard Expo (ages 6-12) on June 25 and the Derek Dye ComedyJuggling Show (ages 3-8) on July 7.
Indianapolis Fire Department trains on White River The Indianapolis Fire Department was out training on the White River to do water rescue on June 5-6. The water levels were very high both days, including on Williams Creek. On Thursday June 5, there boats were able to navigate partially up Williams Creek which was unusual.

Summer Sol”Sips” I sipped my way into the new summer season by tasting some wines on the west coast and in Broad Ripple. A long weekend in sunny Orange County brought the chance to savor a variety of tried and true white wines that had not passed my lips in a while. Back home in the Ripple, I gathered the neighborhood tasting panel one sultry evening to review a new world take on an old world red. West coast foods paired well with the whites. The Italian red blend found a welcome food partner in home town favorite Bazbeaux pizza. All wines are widely available. 2010 Wairau River Pinot Gris–medium bodied white wine with lovely aromas and subtle flavors of apricots, honeydew melon, and white tea. Finishes dry but with a silky mouth feel. Super tasty paired with toasted whole wheat pita topped with greek yogurt and avocado. Estancia Pinot Grigio–off dry white; light and easy drinker with notes of bartlett pear and golden delicious apple. Perfect glass with a grilled shrimp taco with shredded cabbage and salsa and a view of the Pacific ocean. 2013 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc–once the exception now the rule when you want a reliable screw capped New Zealand white wine. Still tangy not as zippy. Softer white grapefruit but still delicious. Now widely available and affordable. We found it at Costco for $12.99. Perfect blend of smooth and sassy in the glass with soothing and snappy on the plate as it was paired with a thin, crispy, smokey crusted pizza topped with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil in a Laguna Beach pizza joint near the beach. 2011 Ferrari-Carano Fume Blanc–Sonoma County interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc; subtle hints of pink grapefruit with clean, smooth finish. Easy elegant drinking while dining on Thai food as the sun set over the Pacific. 2012 Brancaia Tre Rosso Toscano–blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Dark red fruit dominates. Black cherry, black plum. Young so tannins still fresh but oak aged so softened enough now that tannins are more chewy than grippy. Could age a bit more too. Whiff of old world Italian but not as much as most Tuscans so makes it more American red Italian wine drinker friendly. Neighbors loved the smooth finish even more as they enjoyed with a Bazbeaux Quattro Formaggio pizza. Jill A. Almost everyone has a goal to eat more healthfully, and most of us struggle with doing so in thinking that we will be subjected to an extremely boring diet. Add that to the summer months of parties, cookouts and outdoor dining, it seems nearly impossible to keep our waistlines and health in check. However, there are dozens of recipe and ordering “tricks” that I have discovered to help thwart this from happening. There are literally thousands of tips but I am just going to share my favorites: • Whole wheat flour for white flour: In virtually any baked good, replacing white flour with whole wheat adds additional nutrients, flavor, and texture. Whole wheat also provides an extra fiber, which aids in digestion and leaves you feeling fuller longer. • Lettuce leaves for tortilla wraps: This swap clearly forgoes the carbs for fresh lettuce. It is an easy and cheap is a fun switch that can lighten up any wrap. • White-meat, skinless poultry for dark-meat: And the white meat is the clear winner—lower in calories and fat, higher in protein and iron. • Ground Turkey for ground beef: Ground turkey (or chicken) is a great substitute for ground beef to cut down on saturated fat and calories. • Veggies for chips or bread with hummus: Veggies are higher in vitamins and water, lower in carbs. • Plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit for flavored yogurt: Pre-flavored yogurts come packed with extra sugar. Check out how many grams of sugar on the back of the container!! Add fresh fruit or stevia to plain yogurt for a hint of sweetness. • Arugula, romaine, spinach, and/or kale for iceberg lettuce. Greens are not created equal. Darker greens usually mean more nutrients like iron, vitamin C, and antioxidants. • Nuts or seeds for croutons (in salads). Every salad needs that extra crunch. But rather than getting the extra carbs (and often fat and sodium) that come with croutons, try some slivered almonds, pecans or sunflower seeds. • Low-fat cottage cheese for sour cream: Cottage cheese is loaded with protein without the fat, and you still get the creaminess and also a little more texture. Dining Out Tips: (My server friends just LOVE me when I make substitutions…) • Order no or light on the cheese, croutons, bacon, etc. on salads and get the dressing on the side so you can control how much you want. • Order steamed and grilled whenever possible instead of fried. • Order a veggie-heavy meal such as stir-fry or an omelet with tons of veggies. • Split an entrée and get a small salad before the meal. • Plan to take home half of the meal in a to go box. • Avoid cream based sauces and opt for tomato sauce on pasta. • Steer clear of buffets! • Go for lighter options for appetizers such as bruschetta and shrimp cocktail instead of onion rings and nachos. I could write on forever but I think I will stop here as I am guessing you get the picture. Hope some of these help and see you in two weeks!

July is a patriotic month. Red, white, and blue abounds, and flags fly high, especially on the Fourth. This makes for a fine time to learn more about the American Bald Eagle. Ben Franklin would be huffing and puffing about this column because, in his wisdom, he wanted the country’s bird to be the wild turkey. From Mr. Franklin’s own writings to his daughter: “For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him. “I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.” In Indiana we can add the bald eagle to our celebrations with great joy. Extinct for many years and threatened in the lower 48 states, this large bird of prey was the object of hunters and later the victim of DDT use on crops. The bald eagle was listed on the Endangered Species List in 1967 because only 417 nesting pairs were in existence. Like our nation, the eagle survives and thrives. Its repopulation from 1967 to 1995 was successful. In fact, bald eagles can be spotted over Broad Ripple, Nora, Keystone at the Crossing, and all parts of Indiana where there is open water. So here are some interesting facts: • Bald eagles’ heads don’t become white until their 4th or 5th year. Before then they are brown. (Bald in old English means “white”) • Bald eagles mate for life unless a mate dies, and both male and female incubate the young. • The bald eagle became the national emblem of the United States in 1782, winning by one vote over the wild turkey. • This bird builds the largest nest (called eyries) of all U.S. birds. Made of sticks, nests can be up to 13 feet in size and weigh as much as 1 ton. • A bald eagle averages 7,000 feathers but altogether the feathers weigh 1 pound. • They nest near bodies of water and eat fish and sometimes small game and carrion • Their wingspan can be 6 to 71/2 feet. • A group of flying eagles is called a “kettle” of eagles. In 1985, the Bald Eagle Reintroduction Program began in Indiana with the help of the Department of Natural Resources because eagles had not nested here since 1897. The first successful bald eagle nest in Indiana was documented in 1991. Now no longer endangered, they are still protected. I think of our national bird as a symbol of strength, courage, and freedom. But today, if you see a bald eagle flying high over our Indiana landscape, think of it as also a symbol of survival and success.
