Owner Tamara Albertson described her business. “We are a full service funeral home. We have a state of the art crematory, a modern prep room for embalming, we provide pre-arrangement planning consultations and we have our own fleet of limos and coaches. We are licensed with the State of Indiana and have two locations. We opened our facility on the east side two years ago that is located at 1775 Sherman Drive. This is our central location for preparation and cremations. Six months ago, we decided to open a satellite office in Broad Ripple. I have lived in the Broad Ripple area for over 25 years and wanted to serve families that live here. Our Broad Ripple office enables us to meet families and provide them with all the services a large funeral home offers yet at much more affordable prices,” she explained. “My background is in physiology. I worked for the Marion County Coroner’s Office assisting with autopsies. I went to Vincennes University and studied Mortuary Science. And, for eight years, I worked for Leppert Mortuary in Nora as a funeral director and as a mortician where I learned every facet of the business from one of Indianapolis’s most respected funeral homes. The decision to open Albertson’s Metro Mortuary on Sherman Drive was driven by the idea of offering more economical and affordable funerals by keeping our overhead costs low and passing along those savings to our families. We have funerals in churches, parks, homes, etc. In other words, ‘We bring our funeral home to your neighborhood.’ People may not be aware of where they can have funerals and oftentimes are not Albertson’s Metro aware that they can make economical Mortuary Services choices for their loved one’s funeral. Petition #2014-DV1-024 Hearing Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Alcoholic beverage permit request hearing Monday, July 7, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. This petition is for a sidewalk dining area on College Avenue for HopCat restaurant in the parking structure. The outdoor area is expected to add 22 seats. Approximately 6½ feet of sidewalk would remain between the new fencing and the street. The committee voted unanimously to support this petition.

I’ll admit it. I spent some time in my teens having an unrealistic crush on Dr. Noah Drake. I totally understood why Nurse Bobbie Spencer would fake blindness to keep him closer. When I realized that Rick Springfield had a life outside of the fictitious General Hospital and Port Charles, my crush intensified and hasn’t gone away yet. As it turns out, Rick Springfield is a kick-ass guitar player, great songwriter, and is still dreamy at 64 years old. His music goes beyond the poppy hits (“Jessie’s Girl” and “Affair of the Heart”) he’s known for and dives into rock tunes. He is a reallife, hard-working, touring musician. Rick (we’re on a first name basis now, at least in my head) played at the Indiana State Fair a few years ago and I was very impressed. I’ve seen teen idol pop stars play in the midday August heat on the dusty stage on the track and not make much of an effort. Rick put on an amazing concert – not only showing off his guitar playing skills, but his athleticism. He seemed genuinely happy to be there and to see the fans. I was lucky enough to have photo by Nora Spitznogle a press photo pass which allowed me Rick Springfield at the Indiana State Fair. to be in front of the stage for the first three songs. For the record, I didn’t reach out to touch his Chuck Taylor’s, but it was hard to contain myself. He’s touring this summer with his band and the shows are getting great reviews from other cities. The $225 ticket includes a Meet and Greet session with Rick.

Ed Funk was an active Indianapolis artist for the last four decades. He graduated from Herron School of Art in 1988, and later co-founded the Murphy Arts Center in Fountain Square. He was known throughout the country to countless artists, collages, and folks who loved his shop as the owner of Dolphin Papers. A collection of Ed Funk’s final works of art have been gathered for this limitedtime show – the work will hang for one week after the opening. Live music by Daniel Paquette and Matthew Askren.

B) 6223 Guilford Avenue, 3 Sisters Restaurant, David Gilman, regarding a variance of development standards to provide for a restaurant, with outdoor seating (not permitted), a parking lot, with deficient maneuvering area on-site and within a public alley (adequate maneuvering area required) and with parking with zero-foot front and east transitional yards (10 foot front and east transitional yard along an alley required). Petition #2014-DV3-022 Hearing Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. This petition is for moving 3 Sisters Cafe from 6360 Guilford Avenue to the yellow house at 6223 Guilford Avenue [H5 on map]. A deck for up to 65 patrons is planned for the site. The committee voted unanimously to support this petition. The remaining four items on the agenda had no voting by the committee as they were all “for information and feedback only” presentations. The presenters will return to the committee after the plans have been filed with the city. C) 6440 Westfield Boulevard, Gene Valanzano regarding redevelopment of the American Legion site. Will be filing July 10, 2014 with DMD. This petition is for a multi-story office building with a restaurant and a parking garage on the site of the American Legion Kennington Post at 65th and Westfield Boulevard. Plans include 3 floors of office space totaling 72,000 square feet, a 7500 square foot restaurant space, and an attached parking garage with 219 spaces. A positive presented for this project is that instead of apartments, this building will increase the daytime business aspect of the Village. Another positive is that is parking required by the project is provided on-site. D) 6311 Westfield Boulevard, Todd Morris owner of the building and Michael Rabinowitch, Legal Council, regarding redevelopment for a multi-family dwelling. This petition is for razing the office building north of McDonald’s and Brugge Brasserie on the White River and constructing a 42-unit apartment building overlooking the river [F6 on map]. E) 806-888 E. 66th Street, Chris Chabenne regarding further information on multifamily development. Will be filing in July with DMD. This was the second presentation by Michael Kosene for plans to build a 63-unit, 4-story, apartment building along 66th Street between Opti park and Ferguson Street [B4 on map]. There would be 60 parking spaces under the building and an additional 13 on the street. Sidewalks would be added. F) 6265-6289 Broadway Street, David Kingen and Greg Stoll regarding changes to the plan for developing a multifamily building. Will be filing soon. This presentation showed the changes made to the plans following the previous meeting discussions of the now 7-condo building proposed along the canal behind CVS [G2 on map]. The petitioner said the three-story building would screen the neighbors from the Village and parking garage across the canal. The building would be 33 feet tall along the Laverock side. The next public meeting of the committee is scheduled for July 22 at 6 p.m. at the Indianapolis Art Center Library.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

State Fair seeks Indiana beer and wine exhibitors
The Indiana State Fair is now accepting applications from Hoosier brewers and wineries to participate in the inaugural Indiana Beer and Wine Exhibition at this year’s fair, Aug. 1 – 17. There is no charge to participate, but space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The exhibition, which will only be open to visitors who are at least 21 years old, will feature “tasting tables” and beer and wine being sold by the glass. Exhibitors will be able to staff these tables to educate patrons on the beer and wine making process, and to discuss their individual products. They will also be able to display, but not sell, their promotional materials and merchandise. The new exhibition will be located in the Grand Hall on Main Street directly across from the Fairgrounds Coliseum. It will also include educational displays from the Indiana State Museum’s American Spirits exhibit. “This is an opportunity for the Indiana State Fair to showcase two very important Indiana agricultural industries,” Indiana State Fair Executive Director Cindy Hoye said. “We will maintain the family atmosphere the fair has always had while adding this ag education component, which is at the heart of our mission.” The exhibit will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. each of the 17 days of the fair. All tasting samples and glasses of beer and wine sold will be contained and consumed inside the Grand Hall. Department Of Public Words To Redo Murals On Monon Trail (52nd-54th St.)
The Department of Public Words is an Indianapolis non-profit. It was established because we love people. We exist to communicate this love for people through positive messages of hope, encouragement and inspiration. This mission is achieved with simple, direct, positive public messages through artwork and positive spoken words. We are excited to announce one of our largest summer projects: Redoing the murals on the Monon Trail from 52nd-54th streets. Here are some facts about the project: Working with a local artist, Emily Litsey, for the main concept using her painting “Roots of the City” as a basis for the mural. The old murals will be photographed as a way to document them. Meridian Kessler Neighborhood Association, SmallBox and Herman & Kittle Properties, Inc. are funders for the project. Bringing in an internationally known street artist from St. Louis, Peat Wollaeger, as an expert in stencil art (www.stensoul.com). This is possibly the largest stenciled wall ever (over 600 ft). Applied for an official Guinness World Record. Involving volunteers in order to engage the community in the process, creating a feeling of ownership beyond just the artists. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will put a 5 in the medium puzzle in the right section of the middle row that contains 2-3-4-7. The 5 in the middle section of the middle row eliminates the two spaces to the right of the 3. The 5 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces above and below the 4. The 5 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space to the left of the 4-2. The only space left is two space below the 3. You have now learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Historic Ad This ad for Heathkit ran in 1983. Heathkit was a store for geeks like me, offering build-it-yourself electronic kits and computers. The store was near Glendale at 2112 Broad Ripple Avenue. Today, Dr. Sue’s Neighborhood Veterinarian and Supercuts is at this location [HH31 on map]. I owned one of the Z-100 computers, similar to the H-100 in the ad. It cost over $2,000, had no hard drive, just 2 floppy drives, and about 512 kilobytes (not gigabytes!) of RAM. It ran CP/M instead of MSDOS. That computer is currently featured in the AMC series Halt and Catch Fire.

BR Adult day care service hosts ice cream social At the July 25 ice cream social/open house, I had a chance to discuss services provided by Joy’s House, Broad Ripple’s adult day care center, with Tina McIntosh, President and founder. Joy’s House is celebrating five years at this location and 15 years of providing services to 35 guests each weekday (with room for 40). Joy’s House also provides caregiver education and support. Its radio program, Caregiver Crossing, is on WIBC radio from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. every Saturday. A new art therapy program for family care givers is offered in a partnership with the Herron School for Arts. lm lco

Senior care boxes are gifts you send to your elderly relatives and friends. A care box consists of puzzles, candy, a card, and a historic picture. A recent picture was of a picture of a party line telephone (i.e. a shared land line which was common “back in the day”). Kyle has three great aunts one of whom is over 100. They got the idea because family members who don’t live nearby want to send their senior relatives a small gift. IMA summer night’s hosts 80s theme No summer is complete without enjoying an outdoor movie at the Indianapolis Museum of Art on Friday nights. On July 11, it’s the Hitchcock thriller Vertigo. The movie Hook is scheduled for July 18. Come dressed as a pirate, play pirate games, and search for treasure in the Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. On July 25, it’s Flashdance and they are having an 80’s dance party and encouraging guests to come in their ‘80s inspired attire. The best ‘80s outfit will win prizes and Internet fame, and we’ll have ‘80s music and trivia as well. Army Corps of Engineers releases Record of Decision on Indpls North Flood Damage Reduction project The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, issued a Record of Decision (RoD) on June 27 for the Indianapolis North Flood Damage Reduction project. Based on the comments received on the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (FSEIS) and taking into account economic, environmental, and other pertinent factors, a Record of Decision (ROD) has been issued. The selected alternative(s) are the Westfield Boulevard Alternative for the Phase 3B/South Warfleigh Section and the 15-foot vegetation clearing for the Phase 3A/Warfleigh and Phase 3C/Monon-Broad Ripple Sections. The selected alternatives, with the appropriate and practical mitigation measures identified in the ROD, sufficiently minimize environmental harm and potential adverse impacts on the aquatic ecosystem and the human environment. Signature of this ROD by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District Commander Col.
Luke Leonard, completes the Corps’ National Environmental Protection Act requirements and responsibilities. The Corps issued the FSEIS for the Indianapolis North Flood Damage Reduction project June 7, 2013, for review and comments. The public and agency comment period for the FSEIS was extended twice, for a total of 145 days, with the final comment period closing in October 2013. The review process originally began with the Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District issuing a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS) for the Indianapolis North Flood Damage Reduction Project in June of 2012. SUMMER TIME: THINK PINK! Summer time. And what will make the living even more easy? A glass of rose wine. The pale, shimmering soft ruby colored liquid is truly a gem in the glass to the culinary world anytime of the year but especially when the temperatures soar. Rose style wines bring out the best in Mother Nature’s Summer Garden harvest. And before you go and tell me that you don’t like sweet wines, I must take you back for a bit of history on “rose” wines to remember that it is a STYLE and not a flavor of wine. In the 1970’s the California wine industry was just beginning to grow, as was a red grape called Zinfandel. Zinfandel thrived in the wine country soil and was made into a bold, dry red wine. However, the 70’s wine drinking public wanted WHITE wine. So what could a California winemaker do with this fruity, spicy red grape to make it more palatable and profitable? The Gallo Brothers put it in a jug renamed it “Hearty Burgundy” and made a fortune. But the thirst for white wine was yet to be quenched. So at Sutter Home Winery, Winemaker Bob Trinchero turned a mistake into a milestone. He had a barrel of Zinfandel that experienced stuck fermentation, which means the yeast died off before turning all of the sugar in the juice into alcohol. This left Bob with a batch of pink, sweet wine. What could have been a brush with disaster became the blush of success. Pink was closer to white than red and America’s natural proclivity to all things sweet made this combination a winner which we all now know as “White Zinfandel”. The French had been making rose style wines for years with great success. But the crafty Americans decided to call it “blush” which to this day can still be a tip off when the label on a bottle of pink wine says “blush”, more often than not it will lean to the sweeter style. Wine labeled “rose” usually means the pink wine inside is a bit more dry. After all it is a STYLE of wine making and most winemakers take one of two options when creating a barrel of pink wine : the rose/blush method (like Trinchero) or the French style of rose wine making called “saignee” (SAHN- YEE). Blush/Rose style means the winemaker puts the crushed red grapes with skins and juice in a barrel, adds yeast that eats away the sugar in the juice upping the alcohol and lowering the sweetness. The winemaker decides how far to let that fermentation go and thus creates either a dry or sweet style of rose/blush wine. The Saignee process has the winemaker putting full clusters of grapes into a barrel. No crushing. Just grapes. Yeast is added which starts the fermentation and the whole grapes naturally release juice. Sometimes this juice is also called “Free Run”. Winemakers consider this to be the best or freshest juice of the batch which makes it perfect for rose wine. The winemaker wants the color and flavor of the red wine but not the bitterness or astringency which comes from longer contact of juice/grape skins. You serve a rose wine chilled but as it comes to room temp the delicious quality remains with the fruit and acid creating a perfect culinary partner. When the day is hot and heavy but your appetite for wine is not, try a “rose” style of red wine. Here are two to find to give your mind and palate a new appreciation of pink wine. Crios Rose of Malbec, Argentina–crisp notes of mulberry, white pepper, in a rather full bodied rose. Bring on the beef. Rose des Karantes, France–bright, crisp, aromas and flavors of plum, cherry and smooth clean finish.

We Truly Are The World The recent excitement about the World Cup has been very intriguing to me, in a good way. Although I played some soccer in my youth, the sport really hasn’t been of much interest to me, admittedly. Not for any “reason” really. I suppose that with a football and basketball fanatic husband, I have been unconsciously molded to focus on the Colts and Pacers and, then of course, with my hobby of fitness and running I believe I have felt well fulfilled with sports spectating and participation. However, as many, I jumped on the fair weathered band wagon this year as the US soccer team progressed into the round of sixteen of the Cup. I worked for the first hour of playoff the game so, when I came home I watched the last 30 minutes with my husband as I checked emails and whatnot. But it wasn’t long before my full attention was on that game! First of all, the electricity and intensity of soccer spectators is, by a landslide, unprecedented. It was eye opening to me. You would be hard pressed to find one single fan not donned in their country’s flag or painted head to toe screaming as if their life was on the line. Forget the occasional “crazy” fan you might see at an NFL game….Every. Single. One. As I continued to watch the game, it became nail biting even for my original “uninterested” self; I started noticing other aspects of this event. As I previously mentioned, used to US professional sports teams, I am always used to the “trash talk” while opposing team fans are seated near each other….let’s say it isn’t a pretty sight. I was amazed when the camera would pan the crowd, countries spanning the globe, fans slathered in either USA/Belgium decor; don’t get me wrong they were all screaming their heads off, but weren’t bashing each other in any way. As the game progressed, not to mention watching the amazing Tim Howard (world record goal saves) keeping us from not losing 20-0, I began to notice more of this same solidarity within the players. For example, one player from Belgium kicked a severely fast ball into a US player’s face. The US player went down, and IMMEDIATELY the Belgian fell to his knee to see if he was okay and stayed there until it was sure that the affected player was okay. This is just one example; scenarios like this went on and on. Pleasantly surprised because of what I am used to seeing. After the sore loss by the US (but well-played) game, we watched the game review. Commentators from several languages, with translators, flowed through the television (this event isn’t only in English?!!! How DARE they!). What kept resonating with me that with all the differences in cultures and ideals is the raw humanity in it all. Every four years, whether it is the Summer/Winter Olympics or the World Cup, the world gets together to celebrate sport and all of the physical and emotional benefits it provides. Iran, Ghana, Korea, etc.; if you were an alien in outer space during this time you would think we had the perfect world! Unfortunately not “true” but it portrays that at these times that the world is holding hands (if even in a short time) in a competitive but also unifying way which makes me feel that only a small few create the larger problems that we have amongst each other. Regardless, no matter what gender, ethnicity, age, ideals, religion etc…the ONLY thing no one can debate is that each and every one of us has one thing in common; we are all humans. That is refreshing and something to always remember and at certain times to be reminded of. If only it could be more often. I truly feel that these types of events bring the world more close together. Bitter sweet.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Time to Dine with Your Dog We did it again — volunteered to be puppy raisers for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). Our assistance dog in training, Nolan VII, is now seven months old and ready to dine with us on the patios of Broad Ripple. Although he has access to indoor restaurants with his service-dog-in-training identification, the outdoor summer experience is the most fun. If you haven’t met one of our previous 12 service dogs, I’ll catch you up. We have raised nine golden retrievers; two labs (one black, one yellow); and one lab/golden mix. Our number 13, a golden retriever, was born in Santa Rosa California and will stay with us for seventeen months (until May 2015). So now that Nolan will be out and about, it’s a good time to share thoughts about dining outdoors with dogs in Broad Ripple. Check out the business and restaurant section in the Gazette. A paw print next to a restaurant’s name indicates a dog-friendly patio. Before setting out to dine out with your dog, always check that a patio welcomes dogs. I also encourage you to practice with your dog before you go to a local patio. Don’t ever leave a dog in a hot photo by Brandt Carter car if your plans have to change. You can also dine at the Milano Inn on Sundays for Puppies & Pasta. Some suggestions when dining out with your dog: • Always keep the dog on a leash. • Keep hold of the leash or tie it to a table or chair leg. • If you have to leave the table, do not leave the dog alone; give the leash to another person at the table. • Tuck the dog under the table, and give it the down and stay commands. • If other dogs are present, service dogs ALWAYS have the right of way. • Don’t let your dog sniff other dogs, especially service dogs. If they make locked eye contact, escalation of attitudes can happen. (A dog fight can ruin everyone’s evening and threaten future access for all dogs.) • Bring along a plastic bag and paper towels in case the dog has an accident. Clean up after it. • If your dog cannot maintain a long down/stay command (1 hour while you dine), don’t bring it with you. • Never feed a dog from a restaurant table. If you have scraps to give the dog, save them for the car or food bowl at home. • If you want to dine out with your dog, but it is not yet accomplished enough, enroll in a local obedience school. Tell the school your goal so trainers can help you and your dog become ready for this experience. • Caution: Young puppies are susceptible to disease and should not be exposed to lots of dogs until their vaccinations are complete. Finally, remember that a dog reflects the care and training an owner has given to it. Dogs are like children – they have to be taught how to behave, and they have to practice the social skills involved with dining out. See you out and about! The July 3rd fireworks show from the White River Yacht Club, presented by Charlotte Smith, was spectacular as usual. Hundreds of people lined the bridges, sat in boats and filled backyard parties along the river. The weather was simply beautiful and perfect for the occasion. A great time was had by all. A thank you goes out to Sandy Steetz for inviting this reporter and family to her home for a great party and view of the fireworks.
