mario@broadripplegazette.com Vintage Vogue by GW (Goodwill) offers consumers an eclectic selection of fashions at this Glendale-area store, located at 2361 E. 62nd Street. “There’s a combination of vintage and high-end fashions that you might not see or would have to hunt for in our traditional Goodwill stores. What we do is pull merchandise from our 50 stores that fit the Vintage Vogue product description. The definition of vintage is twenty years old, so something that was made in the early 1990s would be considered vintage. If you’re looking for that ‘50s or ‘60s look, those are a little harder to find. We have men’s and women’s clothes, furniture and some accessories, like vases, artwork, statues and some unique pieces like handbags, shoes, jewelry and scarves,” said Cindy Graham, Vice President of Marketing. “We have had a Vintage Vogue in Bloomington for about three years on [422 E.] Kirkwood Avenue, very close to the Indiana University campus. The model wasn’t actually started by us, but by other Goodwill stores across the country. We began looking at this idea in Monroe County. Last year, we began looking for a site in Marion County for Vintage Vogue by GW Vintage Vogue. We thought the store had a good location within (317) 252-5348 the Broad Ripple area. We thought the merchandise mix would appeal 2361 E. 62nd St. [II31] to teenagers, early 20s, as well www.vintagegw.org as to those in their 50s. It’s not a model that we’ll frequently replicate. We will keep it exclusive to the area,” she emphasized. “On Wednesdays, anyone 55 years and older receives a 30 percent discount. This store will also participate in our 50 percent off sales the first Saturday of every month. We don’t accept donations at this store, but we do have a location close by at 6161 N. Keystone Avenue that does. The proceeds from sales at Vintage Vogue and other Goodwill stores provide funding for employment and educational services for individuals in Central Indiana,” Graham noted. Vintage Vogue’s store hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Their website, www.vintagegw.org, contains more information. It looked like rain, but the weather ended up good for the 3rd annual Hoods & Hops car show at Indianapolis North Side Optimist Park, located at 775 65th Street [A3 on map]. There were about 30 classic vehicles on hand for the crowd to enjoy. Broad Ripple Brewpub supplied the local beer, with proceeds benefiting the Broad Ripple Village Association. The event included parachutists!

The photo was taken by Scott Estrada. It is of one of three skydivers who jumped from a Hood & Hops organizer John Hill inspects a 1939 small plane at 2000 feet and Pontiac De Luxe 2-door sedan. It original price: $871! landed in the middle of Opti Park amid the spectators and cars.

The artist for this banner is C.W. Pruitt, II (Gazette poet). His pen and ink interpretation has sections - RIPPLE suggests the White River, GAZETTE represents the newsprint of the paper, the green at the bottom is Broad Ripple Park, and BROAD is the sun shining down on the Gazette. “This is an amazing opportunity for me to do the banner, especially considering the caliber of the artists who have gone before me,” explained CW. CW has been making art since 2004. He works on canvas with paints and on paper with pen and ink. He traveled with Bill Emmert, who sold art to pay for the trip. “His art was an inspiration,” said CW. CW has shown paintings at various locations in the 54th and College area. “When I sell a painting, I put the money back in to paint brushes and canvases.” You can contact CW at (317) 254-0533. Errata:

In the coverage of the June Broad Ripple Village Association Land Use and Development committee meeting, I incorrectly stated that the committee voted unanimously to support the sidewalk dining proposal for HopCat at College and Westfield. The motion was to support the request if the Department of Metropolitan Development staff report supported it. That motion was approved unanimously, with one abstention. After the meeting, the DMD staff report was released and it recommended denial. Therefore, the BRVA Land Use Committee also recommended denial.

I always love this show and was reminded of how much when I saw a taped broadcast of last year’s show on WFYI the other night. Pioneer Village musicians recreate the WLS National Barn Dance radio show that was broadcast from Chicago from 1924 – 1968. The cast does a great job in throwing in a little history, some musician profiles, and a corny joke or two. The Opry Stage is also in Pioneer Village in a barn right behind the Pioneer Village Barn.

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Children’s Summer Stock Stage presents “The King and I”

Summer Stock Stage, a nonprofit summer theater program for performers ages 13-19 in the Indianapolis area, will present “The King and I” at Ayres Auditorium at Park Tudor School on July 24- 26 at 7:30 p.m. and July 27 at 2:30 p.m. This family-friendly classic marks the last of the group’s summer musical productions with all ticket proceeds going directly toward the program. More than 40 of the most talented students from public, private and charter schools from throughout central Indiana have spent months rehearsing with director Emily Ristine Holloway, music director Jeanne Bowling and choreographer Cherri Jaffee. In addition to the teenage performers, 22 elementary-age students will act as the King’s many children. “The King and I” is a unique love story featuring Anna, a British governess hired to tutor the royal children, and the stubborn King of Siam. Both stuck in their separate cultural ways, the two eventually come to understand, respect, and love one another. As one of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most charming stories, this much-loved musical features the hit songs “Hello, Young Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” and the unforgettable “Shall We Dance.” All tickets are $17. On July 25 at 6 p.m., Summer Stock Stage will host a patron reception featuring the artistic staff in Foster Hall at Park Tudor School. Reception tickets are available online and proceeds will be used to cover program participation costs for many of the performers. Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith Originally I came on board this publication to write about pet topics, which I do, but often I write about neighborhood and past trivia. So this issue I want to stay on course and tell you about some pet related interests that you might benefit from, in no particular order. • The Indiana State Fair is coming and one of the animals that your kids would love to see is rabbits. I have a friend from Ft. Wayne who lives on ten acres and she has raised her kids in 4H. Her youngest just graduated high school and is off to college so this is her last year to fill the van with cages and bring the bunnies for judging. I advise you to go the first few days of the fair so as not to miss them. They arrive before opening day so they are done early in the fair schedule and ready to go home. It is in the poultry barn and housed with the most incredible chickens and roosters. Both the poultry and rabbits have many different breeds and some are very odd and others the stuff artists love to paint. Don’t miss them. You will be amazed how many there are. It’s a good place to buy a new pet bunny. You know what they say about rabbits multiplying and those 4H kids don’t know what to do with all of them. • If you have a dog that loves to exercise and swim a wonderful nature place is Marott Park, across from Park Tudor School at 71st and College. White River runs behind it and lots of dogs swim there. It’s a great place to fetch in the water. Some dogs love it even in the winter. • Our friends at Paw Patch Place have moved their vet clinic next door to American Village on 54th Street just west of Keystone. I have been on a private tour with Dr. Penny Dowden so I can tell you firsthand what a super job she did relocating her practice. It is so spacious. She has made a separate waiting area for kitty clients so they are not as freaked as cats always are. Parking is a breeze and safe away from traffic which had been a big concern. • August 27th the Indianapolis Indians will host, for the second time this season, “Bark in the Park”. A special place at Victory Field will be reserved for fans and their pets to watch the game. Tickets start at $20.00 (one person, one dog). One $20.00 human ticket must be purchased for every dog brought to the game. Additional human tickets (without a dog) are $8.00. Fans bringing two or more dogs must bring an additional human per dog. For more information call the box office at (317) 269-3545. • Your dog or cat could be the next hero by becoming a blood donor to IndyVet’s Canine and Feline Blood Bank. Blood is used by IndyVet and other veterinary hospitals throughout Indiana and across the country for transfusions during emergency treatments, major surgeries and anemia. Each unit collected can save 2-4 pets. Donors must meet age requirements (between 1-8 years), minimum weight requirements (35 pounds dog-9 pounds cat), must have good general health, current on all vaccinations, and taking heartworm medication (dogs). Each qualifying donor receives a complimentary, comprehensive physical exam and yearly blood work. Donors who commit to the minimum number of annual donations receive at no charge: annual exams and vaccines, heartworm testing and 40% discount on select services, including heartworm and flea medications and emergency services. The Ring-tailed Lemur has always intrigued me and I go out of my way to see them at the zoo. They are such monkeys and I guess they nearly are. A photo I share here was taken last summer at the primate house at the St. Louis Zoo. While on a business trip to that city I made a special visit to the zoo and to see them. I was super excited to see that Patricia C. Wright, the winner of this year’s Indianapolis Prize, will open the 2014-15 J. James Woods Lectures at Butler University. Wright is a professor at Stony Brook (N.Y.) University and won the Indianapolis Prize for her work photo by Susan Smith in protecting lemurs in Madagascar.

E. Hall Kempson, who we all know as “Red”, is one of Broad Ripple’s oldest surviving WWII Veterans. He volunteered and served in the U.S. Army 77th Service Division 8th Air Force Army Air Corps for four and a half years. He had a wish for his 93rd Birthday. He said “Frog, I want to ride a motorcycle.” What to do, what to do??? One call to Doug Roy of Roy’s General Service and BAM your wish is my command. A birthday party was planned at Plump’s Last Shot. In attendance were Susan “Little Red” Castor, Kenny Castor, Ms Katy Warner (age 92), Sherry Adams (a Disabled Vietnam Veteran), Chrissy Barber, Federico Lomelin and yours truly. Ride the train to Fishers from the State Fair The State Fair Train will once again be rolling into Fishers from the State Fair. The State Fair, which runs from August 1st to August 17th, is a central Indiana tradition that has included the Fair Train for the past 31 years. The train, which uses vintage 1930’s -1950’s equipment, will depart the State Fair at 39th Street nine times every day of the fair. You can take a break from the Fair and ride the reverse State Fair train trip and see all that Fishers has to offer. Prices for round-trip tickets are: adults $13, children $9 on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. (Discount family days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and are one dollar off of the ticket prices above.) Children under two are free. New this year, you can purchase your tickets via www.itm.org, the website of the Indiana Transportation Museum. Take your ticket receipt to the “Will Call” and cut your “line time”.

New sensor activated signal changer makes life easier for cyclists Cyclists traveling on the Monon Trail crossing 75th Street at Westfield Boulevard will no longer have to push the cross walk button. A new sensor system activates the cross walk signal for them, making crossing safer. WISH TV reported on July 14 that the city is testing this new system for free for 60 days. Rescued pets now available for adoption at BR Farmers Market At the Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, you will find rescued pets for adoption from the Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership. (See picture: Aubrianna Wells and Corie Rettig with dogs Bear and Marshmallow). The group allows you to adopt rescued dogs and cats that might have otherwise been euthanized by Indianapolis Animal Care and Control. Adoption fees vary from $100-$175 depending on the animal. All pets have all their shots, have been vet checked for healthiness, spayed or neutered and have been microchiped. ARPO also visits the pet in the new home to make sure it is a good fit. You can return the pet within two weeks if you change your photo by Bill Malcolm mind. They can also schedule a Two rescued doggies to adopt showcased by ARPO play date for the potential pet to at the Farmers Market. see if they get along with your other pets before you adopt. New Ways to Learn about Wine One of the new features at the 2014 Indiana State Fair is an Indiana Wine and Craft Beer Garden. The venue is in the Grand Hall. You have to be 21 to enter and you must consume your beverage in the garden, no strolling the fairgrounds with a corn dog in one hand and a craft beer in the other. But the garden will be open daily from 1 to 9pm. There will be 4 beers and 4 wines offered each day, and they will change on a regular basis so the nearly 70 Indiana craft beer producers and wineries can each have the chance to showcase their product. I did a wine education event this past weekend that focused on Italian wines. We offered an affordable, eclectic variety of grapes including a few that were organic. The only way to learn about a wine is to taste it, so once again I encourage you to attend wine tastings. Or have your own. These are all widely available and were happily consumed by the attendees. Pizzolato Prosecco–fresh, fizzy fun. Made from organic grapes. La Fiera Moscato–look for the carousel on the label. Not as sweet as some moscato and with a slight fizz. Aromas and flavors of guava and mango. Gran Passione Falangnina Beneventano–old world white from the south of Italy. Elegant, dry, smooth. Inviting nose of citrus with creamy, clean finish. The shootings that occurred in Broad Ripple at 2:30am on July 5th were many things to many people. Scary, disturbing, angering and sad to name just a few. When something tragic like this happens in one’s neighborhood it can invoke many emotions and reactions which of course are totally understandable since everyone deals with trying situations differently. For example, these crimes, and the handful of others in recent history in Broad Ripple, may cause someone to want to avoid the area due to the inherent possible danger. And, again, understandable but unfortunate…and I would like to explain why I would urge you to take a different approach. As I learned of these crimes of course I was deeply saddened, but probably more so, (although this word is a noun I think you will get it), I felt retaliation. You see, I, as many others have considered Broad Ripple my “home” for virtually my entire life. I hung out here and goofed off through high school (yep, I was one of those kids). And this is the neighborhood where I began my career as an entrepreneur having had all three locations in this unique and characteristic town. I thank this community for supporting my and hundreds of other endeavors by patronizing small and local business. Frankly, it is because of the residents of Broad Ripple and Meridian Kessler that I am not working at a Big Box Corporate Gym. So, when I heard of this stupid and ignorant act, what does it make me want to do? Not hide away from the area and run up north or wherever else; it makes me want to support Broad Ripple like crazy, even more than before. Leaving the area sends a message to the criminals trying to “take over” our neighborhood: THEY WIN. They act like fools and yet, they move on into the town that we have worked so hard to build up with charm and vitality as we run in the other direction. If people turn away, it would ultimately lead to businesses closing, vacant properties, more crime, etc. Supporting businesses, using the Monon trail, visiting the parks, going to festivals, farmers market, the Art Center, dining at the restaurants, etc. sends a very different message to the offenders: This is our town, we have perseverance and tenacity and how dare you try to ruin it. As, many of you know this is not the first time something in this arena this has happened to me. In 2013, I ran the Boston Marathon and was past the finish line when I witnessed the bombs detonate. It was a very traumatic experience, and I suffered from PTSD for about 6 months after. BUT, I was hell bent on returning this year to run again. Many people thought I was crazy, but many also thought I was spot on. I had to go back and it was an amazing experience and very healing for me. Of course I had some fear…but if I didn’t return, I would have let Boston, a city I completely adore, down. And the bombers would have defeated me. So I urge you, don’t turn your back on Broad Ripple, people. Give it the love and support it deserves as Indianapolis’ “midtown” playground. The police and the BRVA are working diligently to increase the safety of the patrons, and honestly I disagree with those that say there isn’t a police presence. I have always seen them everywhere! Is life dangerous? Well, yes, every time you get in your car or even step into the shower there is always some level of danger. Of course I am not saying that boozing in Broad Ripple at 2:30am on a Saturday night is the ideal safe situation. However, it is not just the responsibility of law enforcement to keep out the “bad guys”, it is the people and the culture of a unified urban area to stand together and rise above it. **Side note: I wrote this article on July 15th. It is now July 18th and I arrived home from dinner in Ripple and it was packed everywhere!! Love it….keep it coming 

Message from BRVA President, Justin McKeand Indianapolis has endured a violent summer. With the killing of Officer Renn and the shooting of six people in Broad Ripple, these crimes feel very close to home. The BRVA wants you to know that we are experiencing the same emotions and frustration as you. We have been working hard to come up with ways to curb the violence in our community. We want to see Broad Ripple return to its roots as a vibrant and thriving cultural district, but this task is impossible to achieve on our own: it will take the cooperation of our residents, business owners, visitors, and city leaders. The BRVA has met with the Mayor’s office, City-County Councillors, and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to discuss Broad Ripple’s specific needs for public safety and our ideas on how to address those needs. We came up with a multi-pronged approach that includes: • Closing Broad Ripple Avenue from 12am until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays to civilian vehicles • Targeting the liquor licenses connected to crime • Monitoring pedestrian traffic flow and reducing loitering • Policing parking lots These efforts will not eliminate all crime in Broad Ripple, but they are immediate, they are concrete, and they will have impact. DPW and BRVA Host Open House to Discuss Parking Restrictions

On Monday, August 4 and Thursday, August 7, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, the Department of Public Works and Broad Ripple Village Association will host open houses to discuss proposed parking restrictions in residential areas near the Broad Ripple Avenue commercial district. Affected areas include the neighborhood south of Broad Ripple Avenue between College Avenue and the Monon Trail, the neighborhood west of the mixed-use parking structure, and the southeastern portion of the Warfleigh neighborhood. Proceeds from Two Events Support Public Safety

The third annual Broad Ripple Bewpub Hoods & Hops Car Show was on July 13. Despite a less than favorable weather forecast, over 30 cars were displayed and attendance was at an all-time high. We’d like to thank our sponsors and in-kind donors: Broad Ripple Brewpub, Marigold Clothing, Forum Credit Union, Vogue, Chad Thompson - Real Estate Broker, Elizabeth Marshall – Broad Ripple State Farm, Sofia Cento, and Outliers Brewing Company. July 14 was the Village Picnic: A Party for our Neighborhood at Broad Ripple Tavern. The event featured games and prizes, tap takeover with Scarlet Lane Brewing Co. (all sales were donated to the BRVA), free picnic-style food, and the Second Annual Best Cocktail Contest.
