THE PARADE ROUTE The annual Broad Ripple Magnet High School homecoming parade will pass through the Village on Friday, September 12. The parade will leave the high school from the south exit at 3 P.M. Students have made floats for classes and clubs, and the marching band will perform. The parade stops briefly in front of Sabbatical so that the band can play for the BRMHS faculty that packs the outdoor deck. The Rockets will play the Washington Continentals in the homecoming football game at 7 P.M. The BRHS Alumni Association welcomes all alumni to come to the parade and the game to celebrate BRHS. mario@broadripplegazette.com Broad Ripple Boat Company, L.L.C. provides paddle wheel excursions on White River. Founder and Capt. Mike McRee described his nautical aspirations dockside. “What started the company was the boat sitting on the bottom of Morse Reservoir for three years. I had it raised off the bottom with large cranes and pumped it out. We ran it to my farm and spent three years rebuilding it. I’m an arborist (in my daytime job) which allowed me to harvest the logs from my work and have them milled. A custom-made box light Broad Ripple Boat Company is made from black walnut from the Kokomo Glass (317) 254-BOAT Foundry, the oldest one in the United States. White www.broadrippleboatco.com Oak was used for the bar portion of the boat. Most of the steel was salvaged from scrapyards around the Noblesville and Anderson areas. I had to re-plate the bottom of the boat, which was in itself a large project. It is an authentic paddle wheel boat. There’s one on Lake Shafer in Monticello that has propellers underneath it. This boat went into service in June of 2010 and is named Perseverance II. Part of that name is from the three years it took to see it through. There was a Perseverance I, but it went over the

Broad Ripple dam back in the early 1900s. I sailed as a young child and I’ve had boats offshore in Florida on the Gulf side. I have also done a lot of fishing, diving and worked on oil drilling platforms for several years,” he explained. By restoring the Perseverance II to the era of paddle boat excursions, Capt. McRee provides maritime tours for groups to enjoy the tranquility of White River. Birthday parties, business outings, dinner cruises, family reunions, graduations, meetings, pleasure cruises, special occasions, weddings and receptions are just a few of the events creating memorable seafaring experiences for attendees. “Our season usually begins in mid-April and depending on the weather, lasts until mid-November. Most of our excursions take place on the weekends, but now we are starting to book events through the week. We happen to be the only licensed charter boat for hire to carry passengers in Central Indiana. This is our fourth season operating. We have a three person crew. We start in the Broad Ripple area and head north on the river and go past various historical sites like the White River Yacht Club and Indian Grist Mill by the Keystone Avenue Bridge. An excursion takes approximately three and half hours. A lot of people are really surprised that there are big boats on White River,” Capt. McRee noted. Seating capacity for Perseverance II is 65 passengers. Some of its features include a built-in public address system, private restrooms and a full service galley. “We have a full-size steam table, a six-burner grill, large convection microwave and fresh water supply. Custom catering is available where an entire meal can be prepared on board or passengers can choose menu options from our local caterer,” he added. Capt. McRee reflected on his life experiences around water: “I get a lot of satisfaction being on the water, being an Aquarian. I’ve done a lot of diving and fishing in Florida. The most rewarding thing about this project is for all of the people who said I couldn’t do it. The employees of my tree service company, (M & M Tree Surgeons) helped me work on the boat when I wasn’t working as an arborist during rainy days and during the winter.” His visionary craftsmanship has made the Perseverance II a reality. Jimmy Buffet would agree. The Perseverance II was built in honor and memory of Meredith Smith. He was a White River Yacht Club icon responsible for the White River fireworks for over 40 years as well as a mentor for many young men. Some current events included on Perseverance II’s schedule are WARMfest on the weekend of August 30-31 and a Caribbean Reggae & Soca Cruise on September 27 from 6 to 10 p.m. More information is available at: www.broadrippleboatco.com. Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Indy Jazz Fest Thursday, September 11 – Saturday, September 20 All Around Town - some events all-ages, free shows, single event and ticket packages available

How lucky are we to have a wonderful jazz festival right on our own backyard? Over 50 bands will be playing over the 10 days of Indy Jazz Fest, including our favorite American Idol winner, Josh Kaufman. The queue to meet Josh wound around the 4-H Buildings after he played at the Indiana State Fair – I was glad to see the line was gone when I went to the Fair the next morning! You can get a VIP ticket ($150) to Josh’s show at the Old National Centre which includes a reception and photo shoot before his concert Saturday, September 13. General seating tickets for his show start at $37.00. The Jazz Fest kicks off on Thursday, September 11 (7:00 PM) with a free show. The Indy Jazz Fest Band kicks-off the festival at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center on the campus of UIndy. The concert will celebrate the legends of Acid Jazz and Fusion - Bill Lancton (guitar), Allen Turk Burke (Hammond B3 organ and piano), Scott Pazera (acoustic and electric bass), Vince Jackson (drums), Mark Buselli (trumpet and flugelhorn), Tom Clark (saxes), and Rich Dole (trombone). They will be performing the music of Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis, Melvin Sparks, The Meters, Groove Holmes, Grant Green, Chick Corea, and many more jazz greats. The festival ends with a block party at the Jazz Kitchen (5377 N. College Avenue) on Sunday, September 20. There will be terrific music on both the indoor and outdoor stages. Five yoga studios are participating in the yoga-thon to benefit the I.W.I.N. Foundation (based in Broad Ripple). The foundation provides personal grants to women undergoing breast cancer treatment. The grants are used for things to make their life easier – transportation assistance, meals, child care, house cleaning, lawn care, massage, yoga, etc. Often times the group is referred to as the “neighbor next door” for those who are not comfortable asking for help from friends and family or those without a support system. Registration starts at 7:45 am and the yoga-thon begins at 8:30. The first 75 participants will also receive a cute tank top. Teachers from each of the five yoga studios will present a 25 minute class, ranging from traditional yoga to yoga-with-a-twist. Actually all yoga seems to fold me into a twist! -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Education in Midtown

It is the elephant in the room – the bottom line is that families often move out of Midtown for what they perceive to be better educational options in the suburbs. Sure, walk in closets are nice too, but walking to amenities often outweighs that lure of more space. However, when it comes to a child’s education, parents will do everything that they can to ensure their child receives the best possible experience. I would submit that that best experience in education can come from right here in Midtown. Although it is a process to navigate the options, what a wonderful problem to have! I find it truly amazing that if you have more than one child and they learn differently, both can attend different schools right here in Midtown and receive just the education experience they need to thrive. Does it take a little more effort – sure, but I think we all agree that putting forth the effort is worth it for the payoff. We have a preschooler that is currently enrolled in the IPS Preschool program. We face the task this fall of school selection for Kindergarten – public, charter, private or parochial? Tuition or free? What is the difference between a classical educational model, a Reggio model or a Montessori model and which one is best for our child? What if we select a school and then don’t get into the school of my choice – what is our back-up plan and how do we select my #2 choice so that we still feel confident our child will get a great education at that option as well? Information to answer all of these questions will be available in one place – the Midtown Education Summit. Parents and community members will have access to dozens of schools of all different types and all grade levels that serve the families of Midtown. You may choose to listen to speakers or peruse the tables where the representatives from the schools will be answering questions one-on-one. There is no cost to attend and the experience is designed to allow you to gather the information that can help you to customize an education plan for your child. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will put a 1 in the easy puzzle in the right section of the middle row that contains 2-7-8. The 1 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 2. The 1 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 2. The 1 in the center section eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 7. IndyCog wants Monon Trail open 24 hours Bicycle advocacy group IndyCog is seeking to extend the hours of access to 24 hours. They say the reasons to extend the trail hours include: -many work and recreation trips that fall outside these hours and we feel that there is no reason to force individuals onto the surrounding streets when we have underutilized non-motorized transportation corridors throughout the city -the more people traveling these corridors, the safer they will be for all users, and -Indy is one of the few cities to have limited hours of access to our greenway system Their goal is to collect 1,000 signatures on their petition before the IndyParks Board Meeting on October 28th. Micro-farming comes to the Ripple Joe Huff is working the soil which has been placed on top of wood chips. He works for The Patachou Foundation as well as Growing Places Indy. The former is a new non-profit restaurant opening across the Monon from the farm area. The latter is a nonprofit that has micro farms throughout the city. Joe will be planting broccoli, cabbage, and kale. The wood chips kill the grass underneath. The food will be sold in the new Patachou restaurant which is donating profits to charity. REDISCOVERING THE RIVER AND A ROSE Did you make it to WARMfest? The four-day celebration of the White River with music both on shore and off was a great reminder to many of the beauty and versatility of Broad Ripple Park. Seems like most of the development in the Village as of late is to tear down and build new. WARMfest brought guests BACK to the park and the river. The invasive foliage along the banks has been carefully cleared making it easier to access and admire the winding White River. There was plenty of room to visit and indulge in the affordable and eclectic variety of booths. Kids and adults rediscovered and enthusiastically used the spacious playground area. Music stages were far enough apart to give each its own intimate setting. Adult beverages and a variety of food trucks offered affordable sustenance. The best part of the event was the diverse crowd. I saw people of all ages, cultures, and incomes. Singles, couples and groups. Many were Broad Ripple and White River residents. All celebrating something old... made new. So it was fitting, that the same weekend I enjoyed WARMfest, I discovered a forgotten favorite bottle in my cellar and shared it with friends. The Ortman Family Winery closed in 2011 after 40 years of making delicious wine in the Paso Robles region of California. I shared my last bottle with two of my neighbors who also love and appreciate dry rose wine. Instead of slugging it down, we savored all aspects of the juice. The ruby color. The subtle yet fragrant nose. The balanced flavors of red currant and wild blackberry. We drank it slightly chilled and delighted in the fruity yet dry clean finish. If you can find a bottle somewhere, buy it and savor it. Same for Broad Ripple Park and the White River. 2010 Ortman Grenache Rose, Paso Robles

The annual BRVA Ripple Effect Run was held at 7pm on Sunday, August 31 on the streets of the Village. According to the Tuxedo Brothers website, the top three male finishers were: #1 MADISON ROEDER of Indianapolis, 19:33.6, #2 FRANSISCO MEDRANO JR of Bloomington 19:34.1, and #3 ISAAC BRYAN of Upland 20:04.2, The top three female finishers were: #1 KATE LOCK of Indianapolis 24:29.3, #2 LAUREN MANUEL of Indianapolis 24:43.2, and # 3 MONIKA STUPIAN of Carmel 28:07.2

Here are some interesting numbers to share at your next happy hour. A new Gallup poll queried Americans as to their preferences in adult beverages. Here is what they found. 41% of Americans say they drink beer, 31% wine, and 23% spirits. More women drink wine-46%. For men, 57% drink beer, 20% liquor and only 17% wine. Those 55 and older prefer wine, 38%, while 32% prefer beer. Meanwhile 48% of 18-34 year olds prefer to drink beer. Of those 34-54, they too prefer to drink beer, 43%. And 67% of Americans reported having at least one drink a week. Jill A.
