Banner Artist of the issue The artist for this banner is Justin Vining, a Broad Ripple resident with a studio in the Harrison Center for the Arts. The banner is a painting of Broad Ripple Avenue. Justin grew up on a small family farm in Northern Indiana, working the land of three generations of Vinings. He frequently draws inspiration from rural America and has become fascinated with the disappearance of small family farms that once dominated the American Landscape. Further inspiration comes from his time in law school. In the fall of 2007, Justin left his job as an elementary art teacher to attend law school with his younger brother. His return to school transformed his passion for art into something bigger. Needing an escape as finals approached his first semester, he picked up a paint brush and subsequently painted a series of work that was stronger than anything before. Considered the “The Best Little Event west of the Canal Towpath,” the 15th annual Rocky Ripple Festival is September 27, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Hohlt Park at 840 W. 53rd Street. There is free admission and free parking available. Dhyana Raynor is a Rocky Ripple Festival Steering Committee volunteer. “Upon moving to Rocky Ripple in the fall of 2001, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the Rocky Ripple Festival. I loved its grass roots heritage: local bands, neighborhood artists, food and beverages provided by RRCA volunteers. All of the ingredients were there for creating a unique festival that could grow and become an annual destination, beginning with Hohlt Park, a jewel in the center of the community. Over the years, I’ve heard from many artists, musicians (who play for free, by the way) and festival patrons who say that it’s their favorite festival of the year. It’s been an honor and a delight to help bring this vision to fruition. Did I mention fun? It’s fun! It’s a festival for all generations,” Ms. September 27 Raynor noted. www.rockyripple.org A line-up of bands for the festival is: Kenneth Yerian and David Linder (acoustic, 11:05 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.), Kendall/Purdy Project (acoustic, 12:30 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.), vdejetrose (country 1:30 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.), Sax Pistols (rock cover, 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.), Hell Yes Authority (original rock 3:45 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.) and HyRyder (jam rock 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.). The festival stage is sponsored by The TechStop. Other entertainment includes Judy Hannah and the Midwest BellyDancing Superstars, who will be dancing throughout the festival crowd in the afternoon. Mathew Stephens, a stand-up comedian, an emerging local talent in the Indy scene, will debut as master of ceremonies. An Artist Area will feature an eclectic mix of original art and unique artisan items for sale from over 70 individuals. A children’s activity area, sponsored by The Great Frame-Up, will feature a sand sculpture event at 2 p.m. in the volley ball court (with a new sand pile), sponsored by Gardens of Growth. Mad Science returns with hooping, a bubble bonanza, an art station, face painting and hair spray color by Sandy Kurker. Friends of the White River return this year, presenting ways to enjoy the waterways here in the city and offering picture taking with a “fish.” In the afternoon, at the west end of the park, there will be an open, free drum circle. Bring your own drum or use a djembe provided by the facilitator, Helger Oompkes. The Festival Store, located at the Rocky Ripple Community Association, will offer some new items this year: colorful cozies, tie-dye bandanas with the festival logo and tie-dye shirts with the Festival logo (special orders). Also available are 16 ounce stadium cups (for beer refills) with Rocky Ripple Festival logo. A limited number of bat houses are back by popular demand. Raffle tickets are $2 each or three for $5. Local merchants and sports organizations have been wonderfully generous in helping the RRCA raise funds by donating gift certificates ranging in value from $50 to $200. Festival organizers encourage people to ride their bicycles to the event in Hohlt Park. Pedal & Park will provide secure bicycle parking for free. FreeWheelin’ Bikes will have a bicycle

mechanic on site to provide light bike tune-ups for tips. Craft beer will be provided by John Hill’s Broad Ripple Brewpub. Wine will be available to purchase with a new location near the stage. The Community Association and Veterans Association will provide a variety of grilled offerings, festival snacks and fresh corn on the cob for reasonable prices. The Rocky Ripple Community Association will have three food locations this year: the Pavilion (brats, hot dogs and grilled veggie burgers), the Snack Shop near 53rd street (popcorn, chips, fresh fruit) and the Pork and Mac booth near the Brewpub truck. Promoting recycling at the Festival is one of the many ways the organizers are creating an eco-friendly event in the City. In 2013, Meridian-Kessler resident Mary Stumpp and a group of volunteers reduced all of the festival’s refuse into ten garbage bags. Everything else was either composted in the community garden or recycled. Mary is once again helping Rocky Ripple’s “green” efforts by overseeing the plastic cup and aluminum can recycle collection. Mary’s mission is “to collect lots of aluminum cans and a few other recyclable materials, sell them for scrap and use the money to fund grants for teachers in public schools”. She has established a 501c3 organization called “The Can Lady Project.” Steve Zuhlke, owner of The TechStop “Computer Services Center” will provide a box truck, hosted by volunteers, to receive electronic equipment and most all small appliances with a cord. Acceptable items for recycling are: consumer & home electronics, including VCR & DVD players, stereos, radios, calculators, cell phones, computers, (desktops & laptops), printers, scanners, copiers and fax machines. Also suitable for recycling are: s speakers, audio/video equipment, satellite TV equipment, cables, wiring, lead acid and alkaline batteries, small appliances, like toasters and microwave ovens. Televisions and computer monitors of any kind are not acceptable. In addition to Rocky Ripple residents who organize, stage and run the festival, the Naptown Roller Girls have offered to be powerhouse volunteers for the day. Art vs. Art Friday, September 26 Vogue Theatre 6259 N. College Avenue 21+, 8:00 PM, $12 advance, $15 day of
I think this is the 13th year for Art vs. Art and it never gets old. The event is a head-tohead painting competition. All of the artists on Paint Day received the same materials; an 18x24 canvas, a pack of brushes, and acrylic paints in red, yellow, blue, black and white. The 85 artists that entered had four hours to paint. (See pictures on page 9) Those paintings will be culled down to 32 by popular vote. You can vote from now to September 25 at 5:00 on the Art vs. Art website. Those 32 paintings will be on display at the Vogue and the audience casts their votes and narrows the field to 16. Final judging involves four rounds of head-to-head competition. Two randomly selected paintings square off on stage as the audience cheers wildly for their favorite. The electronic applause meter sends the winner to the next round. The losing painting faces the threat of destruction (by chain saw, pizza sauce, samurai sword, etc.) as determined by a spin of the ominous “Wheel of Death.” A painting can only be saved from its impending doom if someone purchases the painting for the minimum purchase price. Artists take home 70% auction price. The last painting standing is crowned the Art vs. Art 2014 champion. The stakes are high (I have to close my eyes when the art is destroyed), but the rewards are sweet (a $4000 check and the title belt, plus sash and a serenade). Come support the arts like never before…or some art will die.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Rivi Announces a new 3 Year Strategic Planning Effort – Requests Community Input
The Board of the Riviera Club is asking for input from the community to help plan its future path. Since 1933 Rivi has provided social and recreational activities to the neighborhoods all around the 5640 N. Illinois campus. Our Members come from Broad Ripple, Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington, Warfleigh, Arden, Mapleton-Fall Creek, Rocky Ripple and beyond. Throughout the years the activities and programs have changed in response to the interests and the needs of members and the community. In order to make it clear that Rivi is working toward shared Member and neighborhood goals the board has announced the development of a new three year strategic planning process. General Manager, Bryan Avery said: “The plan will serve as the blueprint for Rivi to move forward. Our desire is to support and serve our Members and community in a financially fit manner. We hope many neighborhood residents will provide their ideas.” Community residents who are not Rivi members are invited to participate by attending a focus group or completing a short survey. The focus groups are scheduled for Monday October 6th at 7:00 PM and Tuesday October 7th at 9:00 AM. All the meetings will be in the Riviera Club Ballroom. I have lived in Broad Ripple at 67th Street & College Avenue for 42 years. During this time I have watched 18 pine trees lining College Avenue in front of The Edgewater Apartments grow from 3 to 4 foot trees to beautifully reach 25 to 45 feet at present. A few years ago The Army Corps of Engineers constructed a flood wall south along College Avenue to and then east on 67th Street. We have been advised 6 (1/3 of our pine trees) must be removed for easy access to the flood wall should it need repairs some time in the future. I cannot understand why they must be removed now for a repair that may be 20, 30, 40 years in the future. The pine trees were there during construction of the flood wall and did not hinder its completion in any way. If they did not hinder the building of the wall how can the pine trees hinder its repair? Besides the beauty of these trees, they are a haven for an abundance of birds during the early morning & early evening hours. Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith In the mid 1980’s I was working towards a business degree from IUPUI’s Kelly School of Business. I took a course that in some variation still exists today. We had to do a semester project that started with conceiving and presenting a business start up idea. Today it is a team project. Back then it was done individually. I remember it vividly because I was very excited about my entrepreneurial venture. Remember back then we didn’t have computers–we used typewriters with correction tape. It’s hard to imagine but we didn’t have the Internet to use for research. We used the library and made phone calls. People actually answered phones and questions. So here was my idea and bingo, it absolutely is pertinent today. It barely existed when I explored it…….pet health insurance. The idea came to me because I had just the day before class started taken two cats to the vet and was mortified by the expense of it. I thought, if people could be insured, why couldn’t pets. My professor and fellow students thought I had a brilliant idea. I had to research to find out if the concept already existed and then I had to do a survey to see if people would support the idea. Then I was required to find a knowledgeable professional to interview and share his/her opinion on the subject. A big piece of the project was learning how to design and conduct the survey. There was no email. I couldn’t just send it out to all my friends. I remember lurking on corners and chatting with people who walked their dogs. That was tough for me. Not everyone said they would buy into it but all thought it was a great idea and something to think about. My favorite part was interviewing my vet, Dr. Jim Hennegan, after hours at his clinic. I scored big there because to my surprise I found that he was a former President of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association. From him I learned that my idea was not original. He told me of a company in existence for only a short time. He knew of no one who was yet insured but felt it was a good concept. He was very adamant that the only way it would work was if the vets themselves were not involved in any paperwork. He felt that all payment must be made directly to the insured as reimbursement. I called the company and got details. They had no competition that I recall. I learned a lot from that course and got an A. I had a great idea and if I had had the means and the funds I would have become that competition. But fast forward and here I am today decades later in the pet industry as a retailer. Recently in my trade e-news there was a blog titled “Is Pet Health Insurance Really Worth it?” Lauren Swan wrote the blog and she mentioned how overwhelming the costs of a vet visit can be especially if you are a college student or a recent college grad still paying off loans. That’s what threw me back remembering this class course project. She asks “So what should you do? Anyone with a pet understands that you can’t just leave them to suffer. They have to be taken care of, but how on earth can you plan for an emergency situation? Two words: pet insurance.” She shares the scenario of the cat owner who finds her cat ill and in pain from eating part of the carpet. There was surgery for a foreign impaction. She goes on to say “After the surgery, the owner learns that the cat needs followup care, which means going back to the regular vet 4-5 times in the next week to make certain all is well and that the kitty is healing correctly. The total charge for the entire situation comes out to roughly $4,000. No one ever expects to spend $4,000 in a week on a cat emergency, but it happens. While it is easy to

say, “Well, if you’re going to have a pet you should be prepared for these types of things,” in reality, saving $4,000 is hard — $4,000 is a week-long vacation in Paris.” So, do I have pet insurance? Heck yes! And sadly we just used it last month as we had to make horrible emergency decisions about the end of life for our 12-year-old dog. I had heard too many of my customer’s stories like the one just cited. We were facing a $3,000 surgery with tests and ultrasounds. In the end we opted not to have surgery due to her age and situation but I can tell you we didn’t have to decide based on cost which would have been tough. Our premiums began at $35 a month and we started with her at 8 years old. They got higher as technology expanded and veterinary costs rose. But it was still more doable monthly than all at once. That is the nature of insurance. The deductibles weren’t bad. It was very fair. I remember being at ease at that last hospital visit not panicking over costs. It was the last thing I needed to worry about. Swan’s blog said the same thing…… “Many people who own pets will agree that pets are like family. They greet you when they come home, they love you and they look to you for support and care. When a vet tells you that your choice is either emergency surgery or euthanasia, trying to figure out if you have the money to save the pet is one of the worst feelings in the world.” Susan Smith is a life-long area resident and is the owner of City Dogs Grocery located at 52nd and College and at 884 Massachusetts Avenue. Election news: Hale faces Friedman in House race The November elections are upon us and contrary to what you have read there are several interesting races. In House District 87 (which includes Broad Ripple), State Representative Christina Hale (D) faces challenger Mike Friedman (R). Hale told Round the Ripple: … During my short time in office, it has been a very rewarding experience to collaborate with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get legislation passed that truly impacts our district. Senator Jim Merritt and I co-authored a bill to begin to reduce the extremely high rates of sexual assault against Indiana’s children. I co-authored another bill to address the dangerous abuses of cash for gold stores… Knowing the high rate of home invasion in HD 87, this measure to make it more difficult for thieves to dispose of their stolen goods was particularly useful. Mike Friedman (R) is the challenger. Friedman is a small business owner and real estate developer. He develops student housing via a public private partnership. He is running because he decided to do something. A major issue is crime. Indeed, his family was a victim of a home break in. He supports mandatory minimum sentences for criminals. Details about both candidates can be found on their respective Facebook pages. An in depth interview will run in this column as we get closer to the election. Representative Ed Delaney (D) (who represents District 86 in the Midtown area) is running unopposed for re-election. (He is also a candidate for mayor in 2017.) There are also several school board races. According to the September 5 Amos Brown column in the Indianapolis Recorder, there are 10 individuals running for three spots on the IPS School Board including Northside District 3 where Kelly Bentley faces incumbent Samantha Adair-White. Also on the ballot are two Metropolitan School District Washington Township races (one District 1 seat & one District 2 seat). Be sure and register to vote by October 6. College Avenue re-opening delayed Drivers going north-bound on College Avenue have been forced to detour at around 75th and College (due to William Creek Bridge repairs just north of there). The job was scheduled to be completed on September 14 but now will be re-opened during the first week of October. According to Kelly Ann Janssen of the City’s Department of Public Works, there were a few delays due to weather that pushed it out a few weeks after the original completion date. California Wines-There and Here A brief but blissful long weekend in Southern California made me break my summer fling with European wine and “drink local” instead. This trip gave me the chance to re-taste some of that state’s most consumer friendly offerings and wines that are also available in Indiana. Cannonball Sauvignon Blanc from Healdsburg, California was sampled while visiting Lake Arrowhead, a charming outdoor resort area in the mountains above Los Angeles. The alpine-inspired village made me feel like I was in Traverse City, Michigan. The wine list at the charming outdoor cafe reminded me I was in California. Cannonball is the perfect outdoor picnic kind of wine. Simple yet satisfying. More crisp than zingy. Tasty with a tuna salad sandwich and fresh fruit bowl. It’s widely distributed and very affordable as it’s an offshoot label of one of the biggest names in California wine. Line 39 Sauvignon Blanc hails from Lake County, which sits right next to Sonoma County, so wines from this still up and coming region express many of the same qualities as Sonoma county wines, but at a rock bottom price. Line 39 Sauvignon Blanc offers up pink grapefruit and white peach in a light, refreshing style. It was easy to find in California but still relatively new in Indiana. I brought it in a few years ago when I still owned by wine shoppe downtown. I hope it’s found a spot on other local wine shop shelves as it’s a great introduction to the Sauvignon Blanc grape for those tired of heavy chardonnay and sweet pinot grigio yet not ready to go for the super zippy, tangy, acidic brilliance of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. I get back to the Ripple and am greeted by a sampling of wines from Sebastopol, California. Another charming Sonoma county town worth a visit if you head to wine country. Agave Garden wines are made from the nectar of the plant best known for its fermentation to create tequila and mezcal. This time the “honey water” is fermented like grape juice. Pure fruit juice is added and the result is a bottle best enjoyed chilled or used as a base for cocktails, sangria or punch. I sampled the cranberry. (Passion Fruit, Ginger, Tropical blends also available.) The cranberry had the red fruit aroma and currant flavor and a subtle sweet full finish. This could be a fun Thanksgiving wine. Jill A. It is no surprise to hear that the vast majority of diets fail. Sadly enough, as a society we have not been able to come close to beating the battle of long term weight loss. If people do in fact lose some weight, many end up regaining or even gain more than they did pre-diet. Unfortunately, this often leads them to become frustrated and give up altogether. I am here to tell you that it does not have to be this way! Weight loss is at least as much, if not more, about our thoughts and beliefs about diet and exercise. What is going on between your ears will make the difference between a successful or unsuccessful weight loss journey. Here are some take home “don’t do” tips to arm you in this battle! You feel that food has power: Food can’t “make” you eat it. The way some people talk, you’d think a box of cookies holds them down, forcing them to chew and swallow, too! Ultimately, YOU hold the power to say no. You can make it easier on yourself by not keeping your “trigger foods” (and I am sure you know what these are) in the house/office, and avoid using food as a reward (get a massage instead!). Also, have a plan before going out to eat such as look at the menu on-line and pre-pick a healthy option. You label foods as good and bad (or off-limits): Labeling food as “allowed” or “not allowed” leads to destructive thinking and could end up backfiring on you. Instead, if you strongly crave something you consider an unhealthy but tempting food, allow yourself to have it every once in a while in a small portion. This will satisfy your urge without adding guilt or unwanted pounds. Also, if you do have a little indulgence, use it as a motivator to add time or intensity to your next workout. I have found myself many times hitting a big hill and repeating “brownie” (or something similar) several times until I reached the top. So, I was actually extra happy for having it! You consider all fats bad: I actually hate the negative connotations associated with the word fat. Fat is a type of fuel and it is a necessary component for a well-balanced nutrition plan. In fact, completely avoiding fats have actually been associated with weight gain. Typically, a fat fee food is higher in sugar and carbohydrates than those with a low-fat version. Fat is a great appetite suppressant as well. Whenever I need a quick snack, I grab a handful of nuts and it will keep me satisfied through a busy afternoon. Also, fat is needed to absorb minerals A, D, E and K into the body. Use fats in moderation by examining labels and going for a lower fat version instead of fat-free. Trust me, your body and taste buds will thank you. You eat the same foods everyday: This point is true to diet and workouts. If you don’t mix it up, you will plateau. Variety is the spice of life, and mixing it up with healthy choices will lead you to more balanced nutrition. Take advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetables and if you find yourself eating chicken every night, go for some fish or other lean protein to refresh your mind and your palette. You eat food you normally wouldn’t touch because it is free: This one is very interesting to me as I, and I am sure you could relate to. We have all been to parties, and office meetings where a person walks in with a box of donuts or greasy pizza. Not getting in on the deal seems like such a wasted opportunity for free grub; but stop and ask yourself “Would I pay to eat that?” If you answer no, try to forego it. You won’t be sorry later. You purchase food because you feel it is a good value: “Well of course I want to Super Size it if it is only 39 cents!” Next time you rationalize that thought, think about how much a personal training session costs, or how much your gym membership costs, or even how much buying bigger pants may cost you. Turtle Mania Days You learn a lot of things growing up on a creek bank. You learn the difference in a tadpole and a top water minnow; a crawdad and a salamander; and a terrapin and a turtle. For example, did you know the best time to catch a bunch of turtles is just after the creek has been up, rolling rapidly from a heavy rain? Just after the water starts to recede to its normal level, or even slightly out of its bed, you can wade out in the shallow edges and find them. At this time they have usually been displaced from their regular spot on the creek and washed downstream a bit. They are sort of lost, and don’t really know which way to go to get away. They become easy prey for a young set of grabbing hands. During my youth, many of them were captured and enslaved for a period of time. (They were not abused or harmed in any way, but held captive for our amusement nonethe-less.) When the rains would come and good ‘ole Trace Creek would get “so high you could see under it”, we gathered on the bank across the street from our house. The creek bank at that point was a good 25 to 30 feet above water level. We could stand there and watch the tree limbs, trunks, and all manner of debris being carried downstream by the rushing current. It was no time to be in the creek, but an exciting time to be standing there, watching it roll by. We also knew when it settled down and began to get back to normal; the turtles would be there for the taking. We just had to be patient and wait for the swelling waters to calm. When that happened, usually the following morning, we all came back and prepared our plan of attack. From our house, we drug a big washtub across the street and over to the creek bank. This was to house our captives until we could divvy them up and each take home our share of the turtles. The bigger kids would go up stream a little ways, where the creek was a little narrower and not near as deep. There they would cross over to the opposite side. Then they walked back down the creek bank so they were, across from and about 25 to 30 feet below, us. They fanned out about an arms length apart and waded forward into the shallow waters, raking the bedrocks and swirling the water with their hands. As the turtles appeared, the big kids would grab them and then toss them up to us. Sometimes it was a mad scramble for us little kids to keep up with the rain of turtles coming down. We dropped them into the tub and waited for the next one to come flying up from below. On a good day, we were catching all kinds of turtles; little green creek turtles, mud turtles, soft shell turtles, and small snapping turtles. Boys and girls alike, we had a ball with those little critters. Turtle mania ran rampant at our house and throughout the neighborhood for several days after a good harvest. Then one day we would awaken to find the turtles were all gone. My mother had turned them loose. Back to the creek they went. Why? She said their mothers were probably missing them; we could catch more on the next rainy day and besides that…she needed her washtub back.
