10th Historic Home Tour - Perfect! Great houses, great weather, large attendance. The 10th annual Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour was held on Saturday, September 27. There were eight stops this year, seven homes and the Broad Ripple Hotel.

BR Village Fall Gallery Tour set for October 10 The BRVA Fall Gallery Tour, sponsored by Flanner and Buchanan, is scheduled for Friday, October 10 from 5pm to 9pm. Banner Artist of the issue The artist for this banner is Kristy Quinn. Kristy Quinn is an Irvington artist and resident working from her home studio. Kristy works predominantly with plaster and acrylic paint. The banner art is titled Labyrinth. She is particularly inspired by the colors and textures of nature and the explosive and energized cosmos. Depth, intense color, and motion encourages viewers to be actively engaged with her pieces, meandering through hills and valleys or being transported to the wonder of unknown galaxies. Quinn holds a deep conviction that art is interpreted and intimately experienced by the viewer’s personal journey rather than directed by the artist. Her art career began in 2008 when she created her first mixed media piece. Quinn’s work was significantly impacted and informed after a spiritual sabbatical to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico, where one of Georgia O’Keefe’s studios is located. Quinn has participated in juried events and other exhibits in the greater Indianapolis area. Her work is currently available at the Bonna Shops in Irvington. September BRVA zoning issues meeting By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com There were three items on the agenda for the September meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee on September 23 at the Indianapolis Art Center. Two items were to be voted on and one was for information only. A. 6551 Carrollton Avenue, Pete Watson and Cary Harnett regarding a variance of use of the dwelling districts zoning ordinance to provide for general business office uses (not permitted). Petition #2014-UV2-021 Hearing Tuesday, October 14, 2014 1:00 p.m. Long-time residents may remember this property when it was the gift shop Madames, Mice & More. Hot Box Pizza is planning to move its headquarters into this building. The zoning variance is required to operate a business from a property zoned as a dwelling. The committee voted to support this request. B. 6548 Cornell Avenue, Mark Demerly regarding a new office building for Fuzion. Have filed with DMD for a variance of use and change in zoning. This request is to allow Fuzion to raze the house at 6548 Cornell Avenue, then build a new 4200 square foot office building. The new Fuzion headquarters would have 3 offices on the ground floor and 3 offices upstairs as well as 6 workstation areas. There are currently 4 full-time employees and 4 contractors at Fuzion, this building would allow for future expansion for up to 12 employees. There are 6 on-site parking spots, 15 are required by ordinance. The committee voted to support this request. C. 6535 Ferguson Street, Chad Thompson and Amanda Bennington regarding the establishment of the Montessori School presently on 66th Street to this location. This item was for information only, as the petition had not yet been filed with the Department of Metropolitan Development. The request is to move the Montessori school presently at 66th and Ferguson to 6535 Ferguson. An apartment building is planned for the 66th Street site and will replace the current buildings there. The school would move to the building that was previously TGS Architects. The school currently serves 29 families. There is a waiting list for new families. The next committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, at 6pm at the Indianapolis Art Center.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Strugglers Sunday, October 5 Aristocrat Pub and Restaurant 5212 N. College Avenue - all-ages, 6:00 – 8:30
Saturday September 20th was the first planting of the “BILL BRINK MEMORIAL GARDEN”. Volunteers from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Inc., the BRVA, friends and neighbors and two bus loads of Roncalli High School Football players (see photo directly below), the “Rebels”, showed up early in the morning and “got ‘er done”. Afterwards the workers were treated to free hot dogs, chips and soft drinks at Plump’s Last Shot. BRICS donated ice cream for all as well. Marigold Clothing supplied coffee, and water. Thanks to Linda Shikany, Elizabeth Shikany (pictured at planting lower right), Chris Turner, Nate Faris, Neal Bennett, Ruth Ann Ingraham, Brenda Rising-Moore, Nora Spitznogle, Brooke Klejnot and many others too numerous to name here. The memory of our beloved Bill Brink will last far into the future in Broad Ripple. Bill Brink was a self-taught wildlife photographer, naturalist and outdoorsman who, until his death, occupied the Broad Ripple home in which he was born. He was affectionately known as the “Mayor of Broad Ripple.” A co-founder of the Indiana Native Plant & Wildflower Society and an active member of the Amos Butler Audubon Society, Bill also served on the boards of the Friends of Holiday Park and the Indiana Audubon Society. The Bill Brink Memorial Garden is a landscaped linear oasis honoring the memory of the life-long Broad Ripple resident who passed away in 2011. It will reflect Bill’s passion for the great outdoors, native Indiana plants, wildlife, art and Broad Ripple Village. (There will be a variety of plant habitats including a rain garden, forest wildflowers and a prairie as well as benches, public art and lighting.) The garden will: Enhance the attractiveness of the Village, Increase enjoyment of a ride or walk on the Monon trail, Honor a contributor to the vibrancy of the Indianapolis community, and Promote appreciation of wildlife and the outdoors. Random Ripplings
Stanley Smith will be in town from Austin so it’s time for a Strugglers reunion show – and that is good news for all of the rest of us! The Strugglers are part of Indianapolis music history. They played from 1970 until Stanley moved away in 1985. They played the Vogue the first weekend it was a music venue, they were on the bill for weeks at a time at Crazy Al’s and the Hummingbird and they were the house band at the Patio. Band member, Scott Ballantine swears they invented ‘newgrass’ – progressive bluegrass and that Sam Bush stole it from them. Look for them to play a mixture of Chicago blues, Western swing, old country tunes and some jazz – dancing encouraged. All of the original-ish band members will be there – Stanley (clarinet/vocals), Scott (guitar), Jack Clarke (harmonica), Kevin Hughey (drums), Dave Langfitt (pedal steel) and Joe Langfitt (bass). Last year Andra Faye joined them and I’m hoping she will this year too.

We’ve all be lucky enough to have informal mentors in our lives. My list of mentors is too long to mention, but several are Broad Ripple based. I have seen the amazing work of Trusted Mentors up close through their work with the Second Helpings Culinary Job Training graduates. The volunteer mentors work with adults that are overcoming the barriers of homelessness, reentry, aging out of foster care, re-entering the workplace after a long gap, or entering the workplace for the first time. One of the coolest things I get to do in my job as director of programs at Second Helpings is to be there for the mentor match meeting. I love seeing the connections form and all of our graduates have benefited from having a mentor. This is a chance to hear from a mentee and to learn more about Trusted Mentors. The open house is in the building right next to Flatwater. Not only is the restaurant kind enough to provide appetizers for the event, but they employ Second Helpings graduates – who have mentors. Full circle, folks!

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

BR Kiwanis and local breweries partner to support midtown schools
Following a successful event last October, the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club (BRKC) plans to increase the amount raised at its third annual Pints for HalfPints on Saturday, October 18, 2014. Increased sponsorship, support from six local breweries and the addition of two food trucks means additional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives at Midtown schools will be eligible to receive funding. Last year’s event raised $9,300 and helped sponsor robotics and LEGO clubs at IPS Schools 91, 55 and Sidener Academy; supplies and volunteer support for School 55’s annual science fair; special schoolwide Mad Science event at School 55; science club at School 91; and 13 laptops designated for STEM afterschool programming. Proposed events for this school year include a spring break Mad Science Camp at School 55, including scholarships for 60 students; Summer Science Camp at School 55; science club funding at School 55; and funding Midtown scholarships for TechPoint Foundation for Youth Robotic Summer Camps. “As we strive to strengthen our Midtown community, our focus falls on the children in our neighborhood, children with rich imaginations and a desire to learn. These children deserve Class A educations, because they, too, will be tasked with future leadership in their neighborhoods, their city and their state,” stated Brenda Rising-Moore, BRKC Incoming President and Midtown Education Summit Committee member. The event will include craft beer from Broad Ripple Brewpub, Brugge Brasserie, Thr3e Wise Men Brewery, Upland Brewing Co., Outliers Brewing Company and Bier Brewery, along with food trucks Big Ron’s Bistro and Taste of the Caribbean. Live entertainment will include the Big Bill Taylor (blues/acoustic rock) band and the return of the Broad Ripple Brewers Throw Down, a Family Feud-style contest where one team will take home the trophy c urrently on display at Thr3e Wise Men Brewery. The event will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Speak Easy, located at 5255 N. Winthrop Avenue. Admission is $10.00 per person online (pfhp.org) or at the door and includes a 2014 souvenir pint glass to the first 300 attendees. A new “Host Package” is available by online pre order this year. Food and beer will be sold separately at the event. This event is for ages 21 and over. Established in October 1987, the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of children in the Broad Ripple and Indianapolis community. Portion Of Monon Trail Will Close For 10 Days
The Department of Public Works (DPW) will complete repairs on the Monon Trail, starting at 75th Street and continuing north approximately 260 feet. The work is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 26 and will remain closed approximately 10 days. Improvements include repairs to the asphalt and trail shoulders as well as drainage solutions and erosion control. A detour route will be clearly marked with signage. Please use the following detour route as follows (heading north) : Left on 75th Street, Right on Pennsylvania Street, Right on 84th Street, Left on Washington Boulevard, Cross 86th Street, continue on Washington Boulevard, take left part of the “Y”., Right on 91st Street, Right on Monon Trail. Sidener Academy for High Ability Students, located at Kessler and Keystone, has a long-standing track record of academic excellence. Now the students and staff at Sidener have a new accolade to add to the list - they belong to a Blue Ribbon School! U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the 2014 list of National Blue Ribbon Schools this afternoon. Schools are selected based on their overall academic success or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. “These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education-that all students, no matter their name or zip code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments,” Secretary Duncan said. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent excellence and a resource for other schools and districts. We celebrate them for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student.” Students and teachers at Sidener watched the live stream of the announcement to ensure they were the first to know about this huge honor. IPS is proud of Sidener’s recognition as an Exemplary High Performing School, meaning it is among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. This is an especially impressive achievement for the 2013-2014 award year, as the Department of Education used more strict guidelines than ever when selecting Blue Ribbon Schools. Monon Trail closed, College reopens (at 75th Street) The Monon Trail at 75th Street is closed for 10 days to make repairs (starting September 26). Friends of Holliday Park honors Fry Shirley Fry, a retiring member of the Friends of Holliday Park board, was honored on September 19 at a breakfast in her honor. Fry, as the chair of the board’s Rock Garden committee, has coordinated volunteers, master gardeners and novices alike, through a labor and learn program sponsored by the Friends which helps maintain and enhance the historic rock garden. Lisa Hurst hosted the event (which included a garden tour) at her garden home. Hurst—a member and former president of the Friends board—also thanked horticulturalist Chris Turner who directs the photo by Bill Malcolm volunteer gardening group Friends of Holliday Park Board members at garden event honoring Shirley Fry. In her remarks, Fry said Holliday Park is a great community resource which also educates people about plants. The meeting room at the Glendale branch library was packed recently for an information and feedback meeting for the proposed Meijer store south of 56th and Keystone Avenue, where the Cadillac and Kia dealers are today. The meeting was between concerned residents and one of the civil engineers from Woolpert, the local consulting engineering firm hired by Meijer for the project. The purpose of the meeting was to explain the current preliminary site plan and to gather resident comments that can be taken back to the project team for review.

Michigan Apples in a Glass A weekend excursion to Michigan included a visit to a fairly new winery in Manistee, Douglas Valley. As you drive into the rolling hills of the valley you spot rows and rows of apple trees, then grape vines and finally a modern farmhouse with a wrap around porch. The porch is filled with tables and chairs in which to sit and sip and take in the pastoral view. Inside the small but modern “tasting house” is an indoor seating area, plus a gift area carrying dozens of Michigan-made food products and a refrigerator stocked with local cheeses and spreads, more eats to enjoy with a bottle of the DV wine. Douglas Valley makes a variety of sweet and dry wines, mostly from grapes grown elsewhere though a few bottles do contain some of the wine grapes from their own vineyards. But their hard cider comes from their own apples. And it is delicious. Hard cider can often be one extreme or the other-- too sweet or too dry. Douglas Valley is producing hard cider that finds that perfect in between balance. I delighted in the STONE HOUSE SEMI SPARKLING CIDER–made from several of the DV grown apple varieties then fermented like sparkling wine so it had a nice refreshing FIZZ at the end. Lovely nose and flavors of golden delicious apple, d’anjou pear and a clean dry finish. STONE HOUSE SEMI SWEET CIDER–really wasn’t sweet at all. The leftover residual sugar in the blend gave the cider a note of honey and more of a round silky finish. I got more red apple notes from this one. Also delicious. On tap that day DV was pouring some fruit infused hard ciders. I was ready to try, when a wedding party pulled into the winery. Out from an Escalade limo came 14 young people, all of whom said they were 21. The staff was a bit overwhelmed and the wedding party just wanted “pretty wine” to put in glasses for pictures. On the wine side, I sampled the BUNK HOUSE WHITE a blend of chardonnay, vignoles, riesling and pinot grigio. Wacky combination reflected in the white
wine. It was pleasant but I felt like all of the distinguishing notes of each of those tasty grapes were lost in the mix. Same for the BUNK HOUSE RED–a blend of Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Merlot. It was heavily oaked so most of what I got was smoky, earthy dark red fruit. I’d choose the ciders over the wines any time. And the sparkling cider would make a terrific Fall brunch beverage. www.douglasvalleywinery.com Jill A. If you are a regular reader, you may be familiar with an article I wrote about not judging people by their appearance or make assumptions based on weight. The main point is that one really doesn’t know a person until they have walked in their shoes. I have a personal story to share with you when I have been the victim of such assumptions but on the other end of the spectrum in regard to weight. When I was in my freshman year of college (living the glamorous dorm life), one day I began having weird stomach issues. I remember it like it was yesterday: once a month was “restaurant night”; this is where each dorm has dinner catered by a different restaurant. This was quite exciting since dorm food was less than delicious. Our dorm was catered by Fazoli’s, and as I munched down on the spaghetti and breadsticks with glee, I started to feel very bloated as though I had to burp badly. When I tried to do so, large amounts of food would come up into my mouth causing me to either re-swallow mushy food or spit it out. “How weird!” I thought. I chalked it up to a normal stomach bug and had no doubt that it would go away in the next day or so. Well, several days passed and there was no sign of stopping. It was very confusing, embarrassing, and quite frankly scary for my young 18 year old body to experience. Days turned into months and I began seeing doctors to try to get some answers. By this time, hunger was no match for the pain and discomfort I had eating and, ehem, going #2. So, I began to lose weight and quite quickly because I ate very little to deal with it as little as possible. I erred to mention that before this disorder came about, I had discovered my love for running that semester...back to that later. While I was supposed to be doing all of the fun and studious activities of a college student, I was returning to Indianapolis almost every weekend to undergo creepy and sometimes extremely long tests to determine my problem. I would eat radioactive egg beaters and lay under large devices for hours so it could see what the heck my digestive system was doing. More weight loss. One particular test involved me having a tube threaded up my nose and down my throat and it attached to my belt for 24 hours. It was humiliating and I endlessly used throat spray. It felt like I was choking the entire time. They determined that I had acid reflux disease (GERD) which isn’t that uncommon to treat. I was taking lots of different medicines that didn’t seem to do a damn thing, so clearly I had a particularly aggressive form of GERD. More weight loss. I was being asked by doctor after doctor if I was “sure” I didn’t have an eating disorder, since these drugs were usually highly effective. More weight loss. I was the subject of an intervention from my girlfriends who told me that I would easily gain weight if I just started eating McDonald’s regularly. I would still run a bit around campus to relieve stress but would get stared at due to my low weight. I would get winded when walking up the stairs to get to class, and my hair was getting thinner. I have many more stories but I think you get the picture. At my lowest I was 90 pounds, and the only description I have for it is “forced anorexia”. I was now in my senior year of college so this had been going on for some time. My husband, then boyfriend, once had some idiot ask him if I was a heroin addict. I was depressed and convinced I would live a short life. I almost gave up. Until one day I met a surgeon that believed (in) me and after having a dead gall bladder removed and another, at the time brand new, surgery on my stomach I was finally cured. I will never forget the first meal I had after waking from surgery. I cried; because it didn’t come back up. Steadily I gained back the weight, and slowly people apologized for doubting me. I wasn’t mad at them; they were simply concerned about me and what I had was extremely rare, so I didn’t blame them. Today I am a healthy 125 pounds have ran 10 marathons, and own my own gym. I do not regret going through that experience, while very tough, because it gave me an appreciation for health and lot of empathy for those under (or over) weight and how it feels not only inside but emotionally when you feel labeled by society. In the seven years I have been writing this column I have never even mentioned this story but somehow felt it was time My last example is one that is occurring right now. My friend is currently being treated for stomach cancer and has lost a significant amount of weight. He is also an elite runner, and continues to run to feel alive and combat stress. I have no doubt that many look at him and think he has an eating disorder. He is not running to lose weight; he is running to stay alive. So, we all must remember. Word to the Wise When in doubt, leave that feather on the ground. There are laws and treaties dating back to the early 1900s that protect birds, especially the American Bald Eagle, our national bird. The Lacey Act prohibits trafficking of live or dead wildlife specimens, declaring it a felony if you try. The Migratory Bird Treaty protects almost all North American birds except game birds. You cannot pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, possess, sell, barter, purchase, ship, export, or import any migratory birds nor any part, nest, eggs or products thereof. The treaty goes on to specify that feathers are included and are protected, even if they were naturally molted. This also includes use on antique items such as hats and taxidermy items. Didn’t I say, “Don’t pick it up?” The more recent protection most of us are familiar with is The Endangered Species Act that relates to endangered or threatened species. If violated, perpetrators can be charged with misdemeanor criminal penalties. So now that we can’t even pick up a protected bird for study or collecting, let’s have a summer lesson on bird feathers. Bird feathers are fascinating. They are complex, light weight, and awesomely efficient. There are six different types of feathers. Flight feathers enable flying and are most visible to us. Contour feathers give birds shape and color. At the base, feathers becomes downy and help insulate. Down feathers are soft and fluffy. Semiplume feathers are usually found underneath contour feathers, providing insulation. Near the mouth and eyes are Bristle feathers, and Filoplume feathers are attached to birds’ nerve endings. So what do feathers do beside cover birds and enable flight? Feathers keep birds warm. If you observe birds at your feeders in the winter, they will fluff their feathers to keep themselves warm. Feathers provide insulation, helping to control body temperature -- both cooling and warming. These amazing body parts help protect birds from wind, moisture, and sun. They are so strong, with interlocking barbs and oils, that some birds are waterproof (look at the ducks in the Canal). They use their wings to swim and dive. With lightweight bodies and hollow wing veins, birds are quite buoyant. Bracing is another use of feathers by some birds. Observe woodpeckers as they use their tail feathers to support themselves on the ground or when they skirt up and down trees. Feathers can work as feeling sensors. Although the feathers don’t have nerves, they do have a sensory function where they attach, much like whiskers on a cat. Owls arrange their facial feathers to enhance and collect sounds so they can hone in on their prey. And finally, some birds can actually make different sounds like humming, drumming, and whistling with their feathers. Birds also line their nests with their own feathers; hummingbirds use their head feathers to pollinate flowers; herons may shade their heads with their feathers so they can see fish in the water easier; and owls use their wing feathers to muffle their flight sound. Feathers can be camouflage, send visual come hither cues to mates, signal rivals, or provide fright molt by dropping some tail feathers to distract a predator. While tending their nest, many birds soak their belly feathers and use the water to keep their eggs from drying out or give their brood a bit of water. Amazing! Considering all this information about feathers, I’m looking at birds even more admiringly these days. I hope you will be doing the same. mario@broadripplegazette.com The Alzheimer’s Association asks Marion and surrounding county residents to join an effort to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sunday, Oct. 12 at Military Park, 601 W. New York Street. The Indianapolis Walk was named the nation’s eighth-largest of nearly 650 such walks across the country. According to a recent press release, the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk along the canal. It is an experience for nearly 4,000 local participants to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause.” Registrants receive a Promise Flower, making a commitment to fulfill their promise to remember, to honor, to care and to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Through color, these Promise Flowers represent the diverse reasons participants have gathered, and each Promise Flower carries a hand-written message to further strengthen their dedication. The colors combined – orange, for advocates desiring an end to Alzheimer’s; yellow, for those currently caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia; purple, for those who have lost a loved one to the disease; and blue, for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia – create a powerful, visual message that this disease affects too many lives in our community and world. Leah Shattuck is the Communications Director of the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter: “With rapid numbers rising, chances are that you or someone you know is touched by Alzheimer’s disease or dementia somehow - whether living with the disease or caring for a loved one. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a celebratory way to honor those lost and those of the future. Funds raised help support the Alzheimer’s Association programs and services around the state and help fund Alzheimer’s disease research,” she noted.
