Banner Artist of the issue
The Theilig house and flower gardens circa 1959.
The artist for this banner is Doug Ferguson. Doug is a Broad Ripplebased artist, photographer, musician, and writer/poet. He grew up in Ripple and graduated from BRHS in 1971. Doug and his wife, Linda, moved away in 1979, returning to Ripple eight years ago. Their house is about three blocks from his childhood home. The area’s long-standing arts-driven, slightly counter-cultural vibe made it a “no brainer” as to where they would live in Indy. Doug has loved to paint, draw, and take photographs since childhood. After a couple of decades of not producing much, three years ago he began taking lessons at the Indianapolis Art Center. He continues studying at the IAC and with friend and mentor Sofyia Inger. His award-winning work has been displayed at the Art Center, the Broad Ripple Art Fair, and Seed and Star Studio. A selection of his paintings and photographs will be exhibited throughout November at Graeter’s Ice Cream, 5560 N. Illinois St. You can contact Doug at fergusARTnow@gmail.com.

The Flower House on Kessler (reprinted from 2005) I find comfort in seeing the little old gray house on Kessler Boulevard. It has always been there and it has always looked like it does now and it has always had flowers in the yard. It’s a Victorian house with gingerbread and plenty of original details that could have been highlighted by a variety of colors, but I remember them as always being a medium gray, in deference to the profusion of flowers blooming in the yard. In this household, the plants and flowers take precedence. For the past 70 years the house has belonged to Karl and Bessie Theilig, and now their daughter, Helen. Karl bought it in 1935 from Arley Dierks. Karl married Bessie Hills in 1936 and brought her home to it. My darling, I have loved you all along.” - Stasia Demos, Pushing Daisies Karl Theilig was born in Flensburg, Germany, and was orphaned at the age of 11 when the flu epidemic of 1918 took his parents. He saved all his money for a steamship ticket to America. His older brother was already in Texas when Karl arrived in New York on June 11, 1927 the day Charles Lindbergh returned from his flight to France. Karl had been sponsored by a Lutheran congregation here, and stayed with the Fred Quebe family on Bluff Road. Karl learned English at Arsenal Technical High School and from silent movies. Like many German immigrants before him, he worked in the greenhouses and nurseries along Bluff Road on the south side of Indianapolis. Later he was hired to work at Hillsdale Nursery near Castleton. His sister, Anna Theilig, was a maid in the Donald Stackhouse

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle
Pints for Half-Pints Saturday, October 18 The Speak Easy 5255 N. Winthrop Avenue 21+, 4:00 – 8:00 PM, $10 (+ beer tickets)
The Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is hosting their third annual Pints for Half Pints fundraiser to help equip IPS schools in the Broad Ripple and Midtown communities with teaching tools to linked to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. Proceeds from last year’s event raised $9,300 and helped sponsor robotics and LEGO clubs at IPS Schools 91, 55 and Sidener Academy; supplies and volunteer support for School 55’s annual science fair; special school-wide Mad Science event at School 55; science club at School 91; and 13 laptops designated for STEM after-school programming Pints for Half-Pints will include craft beer from six local breweries, available in a tasting size or by the pint. One brewery team will take home the trophy from the event’s Broad Ripple Brewers Throw Down, a hilarious Family Feud contest, brewery style. Food trucks will be onsite and Big Bill Taylor (blues/ acoustic rock) will be entertaining everyone. The first 300 attendees will receive a souvenir pint glass.

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. To: Alan Hague some times i think that it is more simple than Love gathered into the being in massive masses then exploding from us and providing loving energy all around. maybe it is just about be-ing relaxed open and innocent. giving is easy when unattached while living in

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

New Aquatic & Gymnastic Therapy Program for Special Needs Children
I Can We Can Pediatric Therapy (ICWC) has been facilitating Occupational and Physical therapy sessions for special-needs children for the last four years. Kelly Donley, CEO, founded the program in Chicago, IL, and recently expanded the practice to Indianapolis. Children (birth to 21) with various special needs and a wide range of abilities can participate in therapy in an aquatic or gymnastics environment, in either a 1:1 or small group setting. The benefits of moving therapy out of an office and into a more recreational atmosphere, ensures that participating children have fun and experience therapy in a meaningful and enjoyable way. All therapy sessions are insuranceeligible, so most families participating will have little or no out of pocket cost. ICWC utilizes existing gymnastics and aquatics facilities, like the Gymnastics Company facility in Greenwood, IN, resulting in a great deal of flexibility in where we are located. Recently we’ve partnered with a new facility: the Arthur M. Glick JCC. The JCC has a therapy pool, competitive pool, and gymnastics space, that ICWC is thrilled to gain access to. This is the first adaptive program to be offered to the special needs community housed out of the JCC, and the collaboration ensures that children with special needs can have fun meaningful treatment in a more recreational atmosphere. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will look at another method, a bit more complex, for placing a 4 in the right section of the middle row of the easy puzzle. The 4 in the right section of the top row eliminates the column next to the 5-9-2 in the right section of the bottom row. This means the 4 in the right section of the bottom row will need to be below the 8-3 in the right section of the middle row. That 4 (even though we don’t know its exact position) will eliminate the space above the 8-3. The 4 in the right section of the top row also eliminates the three spaces below the 4. The 4 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 8. The only space left for the 4 is two spaces above the 1. home in the 6100 block of College Avenue. Karl decided to go in to business for himself. He bought a house on Kessler that was east of Broad Ripple and started planting nursery stock in the yard. While doing yard work for people, Karl went to school and learned about blue prints. He was then able to plan gardens and draw them, so he moved into the landscaping business. One of his customers was Harold Handley, Governor of Indiana from 1956 to 1960. During Mr. Handley’s residence in the Governor’s Mansion at 4343 N. Meridian, Karl Theilig planted flowers there. They remained friends for years and Mr. Handley would come by the Theilig house and the men would sit out back and drink beer. The Theiligs’ daughter, Helen Landsem, grew up in the gray house, and remembers when there was a bridle path along the north side of Kessler where the sidewalk is now. There was a horse barn on the property where Northminster Presbyterian Church is. She was married at Northminster in 1962, and then moved to North Dakota with her new husband photo courtesy of Helen Landsem to farm wheat, barley, oats, flax, and beef Karl with his prized flowers. cattle. Her sons still help on the farm. For twenty years Helen came back for a month during the summer to help her parents in their nursery business. After her husband died in 1990, she came back to live with them. Karl died in December, 2003, at the age of 96. The summer before, he was still out in his flower-filled yard digging, planting, weeding, pruning, and cutting bouquets that he sold from the back patio. Helen helped him, and now carries on with his work and still sells bouquets off the patio. She also sells at the Broad Ripple Farmers’ Market during the summer. She finds Saturday mornings at the market relaxing after a week of hard work in the heat. Helen’s bouquets are made of common flowers found in many yards including phlox, ageratum, salvia, zinnias, even hosta flowers. I have many of these flowers in my yard, but Helen’s arrangements far surpass anything I could do with the same flowers. I never realized how beautiful a composition of these ordinary flowers could be. The history of the Theilig house is a bit of a mystery. Helen relates a story her mother told her long ago: Shortly after Karl and Bessie married in 1936, an elderly woman came by the house and said she had lived there as a young bride of 17. She said the house was originally one room—what is now the kitchen—and that her father, a Dawson, built the rest of the house onto that one room. The Washington Township, Marion County, Interim Report published by Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana in 2000 lists the house as “Dawson-Theiley House . . . Queen Anne, c. 1880 . . . notable” (page 28). The tall, yellow double to the southwest (5872-4 Rosslyn Avenue) had been a barn. Helen said that the white house north of the double (5878 Rosslyn Avenue) was used by the foreman of the farm containing the barn. A descendant of Jackson Dawson told me that the Theilig house had been the tenant house for the farm anchored by the big brick house at 1315 Kessler Blvd. East Drive. I had always heard that the brick house was built by a Dawson, but I was recently told that the house was built by Abraham Nicholas, father-in-law of Edith Dawson Nicholas (Mrs. Wilbur Nicholas). The stories seem closely related, yet don’t give quite enough information for a solid conclusion. If any Gazette readers have insight into the history of the Theilig house, please let someone at the Gazette know. Better yet, come to a Broad Ripple History Saturday meeting and bring pictures. One person touched by the legacy of the Theilig family is Stasia Demos, a local attorney and singer-songwriter. She wrote a song called “Pushing Daisies” in memory of Karl Theilig and had performed it at CATH, Inc. I first heard it at the Farmers’ Market this summer, when Stasia was one of the featured musicians. She and her guitar were set up at the east end of the market near Helen’s bouquet stand. Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith This fall has certainly gone to the dogs! Remember when that expression meant things weren’t going well? Nowadays, dogs have it better than some of us or maybe we are better because of some of them. There’s the truth of it. Much has happened in the first two weeks including my semi-annual sojourn to Hilton Head Island and near impossible return to work after days lolling in a beach chair. Thus I missed most of this fall fun. Starting with September 27th, Butler University hosted its annual Butler Bulldog Beauty Contest as part of its homecoming celebrations. As always this is a riotous event because there are between 80 to 100 bulldogs attired in every imaginable creation under the sun to try to outdo the others. I always report on it, so by now faithful readers are well aware of this raucous good time. It’s free and so fun to attend. Every kid in our community should experience it at least once. I know you are always looking for things to do with the kids. The feast of St. Francis of Assisi was October 4th and churches all around us commemorated the patron saint of animals by blessing pets which was especially good for rescued and shelter pets. Speaking of which, as I write this, the Mega Adoption event is being held at the State Fairgrounds. This is their second such event, the first was last summer where over 1,000 pets were adopted in the first day causing them to run out. They had to bring in more to cover the advertised second day. This is to flush out the animal care and control shelter which is a kill shelter. Kudos to all those volunteers! October 8th the Warfleigh neighborhood of Broad Ripple had their first

community dog walk. The goal of the dog walk program was to get neighbors knowing neighbors and to encourage them to use dog walks, organized or otherwise, as an opportunity to observe and report suspicious activity to police. They anticipated 40 dogs with neighbors to stroll this inaugural event. It was a beautiful evening. October 11th the annual GermanFest was held at the historic Athenaeum downtown on Michigan Street where the highlight is the wiener dog races. They had 45 dachshunds registered and expected possibly 60. That is always a good time with beer and a 5K walk, games and prizes. Someday I have to skip work to see those wiener dogs. Now back to that beach chair at Hilton Head Island. After Labor Day dogs can go to the beach unleashed. While we were sitting there a large poodle named Smedley approached us. I told the man walking him that the dog knew dog people when he saw them, that we owned two pet supply stores. His comment was “When are you bringing one here? I am a professional dog walker and people here have nowhere to buy better foods and they want them.” The man makes $60,000 a year walking dogs and pet sitting. One of his clients is Henry Kissinger’s secretary who is, of course, retired. He told us he would help manage it and gave us his card after more conversation. They walked away and we sat there and imagined a new store called “Island Dogs” with a reworked logo–our red dog with sunglasses and a large crab pinching his nose. The demographics and the seasonality of it aren’t good but it’s a dream. His card is on my kitchen counter. It has a palm tree on it. Life is good! The picture above is of our pal Trip (Butler Blue III) as he stopped by our store to pick up all the wonderful prizes that were given at his beauty contest. Doesn’t he look glamorous? Monon Trail now open extended hours The Monon Trail (and all Indy greenways trails) are now open from 5 a.m. until midnight effective immediately, but only for a limitedtime experiment, through Christmas. IndyCog had pushed for a 24 hour open time. Apparently additional patrols and additional lighting are not planned (although the trail was patrolled 24 hours anyway). Even though it’s now legal, is using the unlighted Monon Trail in the dark a good idea? A recent walk on the trail at 6:30 a.m. one Monday morning featured bicyclists (apparently bike commuting), most with good lighting. I did notice a few joggers with NO lights nor reflective gear at all. They were very hard to see. by

State Representative, Congressional race top ticket November 4 Tuesday November 4 is Election Day. In Broad Ripple (House District 87), our State Representative Christina Hale (D) is up for re-election. She faces a challenge from Mike Friedman (R). Hale is an energetic, hard worker who can “work across the aisle”. She has gotten a lot done during her first term. I am a strong supporter of hers. First term Congresswoman Susan Brooks (R) is being challenged by Democrat Shawn Denney in the 5th House District of Indiana which includes Broad Ripple at its southern end. (We used to be in Congressman Andre Carson’s district.) You can find out more about all four candidates on their Facebook pages. Free WiFi and snacks now offered on the Chicago train Have you taken the Amtrak train to or from Chicago lately? Three days a week is The Cardinal with a dining room, snack bar, and sleeping car. Four days a week is the INDOT and community funded Hoosier State. As of October 1, Amtrak is offering free WiFi and snacks to all passengers (as well as new business class seating options in a separate train car). This is downtown to downtown service. Hop on the #17 or #18 bus and walk from the State House to Indy’s Greyhound/Amtrak Transportation Center, 350 S. Illinois. Fares from $24 (or less with your AAA card). Hoosier State service could end as on January 31 if Indianapolis does not extend its financial support of the train (at $300,000 per year). in between wines Even though I sold my ownership in the Mass Ave Wine Shoppe, I still do a number of private tasting events. A few lately have involved what I would call “in between” wines. These are affordable fun bottles that are appealing no matter what is on the menu. Here are a few fan favorites from the past few weeks. Tormaresca Primitivo–Italian Zinfandel that has bold notes of black fruit and spice. Terrific with chili or pizza. Nina Bonita Sangria from the Rioja region of Spain–Red wine base with added fresh fruit juices. Fruity but dry. If you wanted to sweeten up, could add some brandy or triple sec. But nice base and could also be served “warm”. Heat but don’t boil then stir with cinnamon stick. Santa Julia Late Harvest Torrontes, “Tardio”–Torrontes is a white wine grape that grows in Spain. Most often done in dry style with notes of guava and honeydew melon with crisp dry finish. This time it’s done in dessert style so creates silky, rich, exotic way to “drink” dessert. Its exotic tropical fruit flavors make it a fun pairing for seasonal desserts like apple dumplings, pumpkin pie or caramel apple cake. Bella Fina Rosso Dolce–It’s a combination of Merlot and Corvina but fermentation is cut, leaving enough residual sugar to highlight the bright red fruit flavors of those two grapes. So you get plenty of fresh plum, black cherry with a slight bit of “fizz”. Serve at room temp or on ice. Great game day gulper whether you are watching on the TV or at a tailgate. That fruity refreshing red wine flavor would be tasty partner for pizza, brats, or nachos.

One of Autumn’s Delights What is the most plentiful nut in many backyards? It’s brown, appears in the fall, and has a cap. It’s not one we usually eat but is so common that squirrels often pass them by to raid our feeders. You’ve probably guessed the answer by now—an acorn. Plentiful acorns from the mighty oak influence our lives whether we are aware of them or not. Haven’t you heard “An acorn doesn’t fall far from the oak tree” as the familiar expression associating child-parent similarities? Acorns are featured in many fall decorations and find their way into holiday celebrations. Some people even think acorns, like persimmon seeds, can predict the severity of an approaching winter. My research has not been able to confirm this to be true. Abundance of acorns does not forecast weather. In fact, because it takes some time for oaks to bear these nuts, the quantity of acorns is primarily a result of previous spring and summer weather conditions. Oaks are wind pollinated, which means favorable conditions in the spring determine acorn volume. Some oaks produce acorns every two years thus, the spring two years earlier would affect the crop. Severe winters can be a factor as well. Whether the acorn crop is heavy or light, it is important to the ecology of our urban setting. Squirrels, blue jays, some woodpeckers, and ducks eat acorns. Field mice and other rodents add these freebies to their winter caches. Even deer will use this high energy nut as alternative food. Did you know whitetail deer like acorns from all the different types of oak trees but their favorite is white oak acorns? Squirrels and jays will carry off acorns and bury them. Some are unearthed later and some are forgotten. Lucky for hidden acorns, they sprout and grow as trees. This is the main reason I mow the lawn. If my husband were in charge, every oak seedling would be growing, and we would not be able to see out our windows. Some trivia about acorns: • Acorns are one of the few nuts not named for their tree; thus, no oak nuts. • The crop of acorns is called a mast. • If you find acorns on the ground without caps, they may be infested. If the acorn is heavy enough to pull itself from its cap this usually means there is a worm moving around in the nut. • Acorns can be eaten (I am not game!), but they should be leached. Raw acorns are bitter and can be toxic in large quantities. They can be roasted, sautéed, or ground into flour. Indians included them in their diets. • Dyes can be made from boiled acorns, yielding a tannic water. • Squirrels like the top or whiter part of the acorn. It is less bitter. Burying the darker and lower parts of the acorn decreases bitterness over time. The shape of acorns has always fascinated me. Gathering nuts from different kinds of oak trees has contributed to my craft projects. From using acorns in arrangements to making little doll head out of them, this nut is a great addition to artisan projects. Just Google “acorn crafts” for ideas galore. Even Martha Stewart has creative suggestions for low-budget decorations with acorns. I’m collecting them again this fall and will see what I can make when I have to hole up this winter. Next time you go for a walk, take a bag, and gather some acorns. See if you can identify the kind of oak by it acorn. Gather enough to try a project. Celebrate the fall gifts of nature. Random Ripplings There is a sign along the Monon Trail at 75th Street that seems odd. It points to the west indicating the way to Eagle Creek Park. It would make sense if it said Marott Park, which has an entrance about two blocks away. But Eagle Creek Park is 9 miles away via 75th, Spring Mill, 73rd/Westlane/71st.
