The artist of this banner is Karen Seltzer, a Broad Ripple resident for 7 years. Karen grew up in Illinois, then attended Univ. of Massachusetts in Amherst, receiving her MFA in printmaking. After years of making prints, she returned to oil painting, her first passion. Through her oil paintings, Karen emphasizes color and light and shares her vision of ordinary subjects whether it’s colorful peppers, sunflowers at the Farmer’s Market, or vineyards she saw during trips to Italy. She is inspired by artists whom used color and light as their subject such as Matisse, Monet, Bernard, and Van Gogh. Six years ago, she started painting custom pet portraits and created BEST IN SHOW Pet Portraits. After painting hundreds of custom pet portraits, she has decided to include custom portraits of people to her repertoire. Karen has exhibited her work in 100+ shows throughout New England and the Midwest. She is a member of the AKC Museum of the Dog Artist Registry. A horticultural and residential renaissance is in progress at 1501 Kessler Boulevard East Drive. Owner Chip Bondurant discussed the home’s history and current renovations. “I purchased this 1890 farmhouse at auction last September from the Karl Theilig family,” Bondurant explained. “I was struck by its simple beauty and awesome potential. You just don’t find features like wide plank hardwood floors, walnut pocket doors and 10 foot ceilings in contemporary homes. I thought I was getting an intriguing house with a garden,” he said. “Specifically, the home was owned by Karl’s daughter, Helen Theilig Landsem and is well known in this neck of Broad Ripple as “the Flower House.” It sits on two city lots and for years, the Theilig family sold perennials, bedding plants and bouquets on the premises. The garden was included in the book Indianapolis by Howard Caldwell, a longtime WRTV6 news anchor. Karl Theilig purchased the foreclosed property in 1935 and it remained in his family until last year when Bondurant deemed it to be in good shape, just needing a little “freshening up.” Therein lies the beginning of the next chapter of Broad Ripple’s “Flower House.” Every home tells a story, but the tale of 1501 Kessler Boulevard reveals To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Broad Ripple Gazette we are featuring a year of local something of the history of Indianapolis as well as the Theilig family. While Karl saw little future on the farm, he did save enough money for passage to America along with many of his countrymen. meadow. In the last few weeks, skilled masons have completed a retaining wall and Bondurant looks forward to completing the exterior stone work in the near future. He envisions an orderly, colorful garden with a detached garage and clearly has made strides in that direction. Very soon as the weather cools, the new owner will again focus his energies on the interior of the house. Walls and floors are almost done, but the kitchen and bath remain an idea on paper while furniture is stacked up and the pieces come together. “Yes, it is a project,” Bondurant explains. Actually, it is many projects and the one he really looks forward to is documenting the history of the house. Legend has it that the original foundation at the southeast corner of the home was a cabin in the 1860s and Mr. Charles Dawson Sr., owner of the Dawson Lumber Mill in Broad Ripple built the wooden home in 1890 as a wedding present for his daughter and her new husband. Evidently the house stood on a large parcel of land, approximately 80 acres. Can you imagine? Well, research is yet to be done, but fortunately title abstracts remain. Step by step. Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle

Happy Broad Ripple Gazette anniversary to me, happy Gazette anniversary to meeeeeeeee! This column marks my ninth year of writing Buzzing Around Town. That adds up to roughly 225 columns, 175,000 words, and goodness knows how many concerts I’ve heard or photographs I’ve snapped. As publisher/editor Alan Hague will attest, it would probably be easier to count the number of times I’ve turned the column in on time – although, surprisingly, I’m getting much better at that. I have an unabashed love of Indianapolis and Broad Ripple in particular. It is an amazing honor to be able to share that with you. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy publicizing just a fraction of the many amazing shows and events that are happening in our neighborhood. The focus of the column has changed over the years. I used to concentrate on reviewing shows and now I write about what is coming up. I still enjoy writing the occasional review – I’m not a critic by any means, I’ll continue to share the good parts of a concert or event. The caricature above is starting to look like me again after a bout of longer hair and twenty-five pounds gained and lost, although you do have to draw in your own eye glasses to get a closer idea of what I look like. Even though I may blush or brush off the compliments when you dear readers introduce yourselves to me, I do love hearing that people are reading the column and truly appreciate it. I love it when people alert me to upcoming shows and events. Please let me know what you’re interested in and I’m happy to highlight it in this space. I do have a few tips about sending me information. Please keep in mind that the Broad Ripple Gazette comes out every two weeks and my column is due a week before it hits the stands. Therefore I usually need about a month lead time in order to insure I can meet the deadline. And also please include the basics: Who, What, When, Where, and How Much. I’m happy to listen to the music and research the bands, but I often spend more time chasing down an address of the venue or how much the cover charge is or a website for the venue and contact information. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The Midtown Holiday Home Tour is November 8-9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. that features four residences in the Meridian-Kessler and Butler-Tarkington neighborhoods. Also included is a Tarkington Towers penthouse at 4000 N. Meridian Street. “I serve on the committee that plans the home tour and help volunteer on the day of. The Home Tour is a great experience for people who are looking to explore some of the historic homes in Midtown. It also gives people the opportunity to get some new ideas for entertaining and decorating before the big holidays in fall and winter arrive! Since it’s the first week of November, it’s usually the first holiday-related event people attend and has sort of become a tradition for some families. Taking a volunteer shift at the Home Tour is fantastic because you’ll get to see all the homes for free after your shift is over. It’s fun to volunteer with a few friends and then make a day of it after everyone is done with their shift!” explained Laura Granieri. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 2 in the center section of the easy puzzle that contains the 1-2-3-7. The 2 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The 2 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space to the left of the 1. The only space left is between the 3-5. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. After 33 years and countless pours, Jock Maggard hung up his shakers & bottle openers on Saturday Night at the Vogue Nightclub. Family & friends joined in the farewell festivities - and more than a few zombies, as Jock’s retirement coincided with the 2014 ZOMBIE PROM benefit for Gleaners Food Bank. Jock was my bar-tending mentor there for a couple of years in the early 80’s when I worked as a ticket-taker and later, a bartender. Below, Jock next to a couple of the first bands we ever enjoyed while working at the Vogue, Huey Lewis and the News, and Steppenwolf.

New community group formed A new group, “I Am Broad Ripple: Arts, Community, Family, Diversity”, has been formed to bring the painters, writers, builders, academia, suits, sandals and countless walks of life in between according to Corey Ewing. At a recent street fair held by the group on Guilford Avenue, the Boy Scouts painted a mural and other art work while community groups had booths. Founder Andrew Yagi says the group plans to do more events throughout the year at different venues within Broad Ripple. Bicyclist hospitalized after attack on Monon Trail A 57-year-old bicyclist was attacked by four people on the Monon Trail on October 10 at 7:22 p.m. near 35th Street and Fall Creek Parkway. According to a police and media reports, he flagged down an officer and told him four men beat him up and stole his bike, backpack, cash, and other items. He had surgery for a broken arm at IU Health Methodist Hospital. The four suspects have not been found. This occurred days after the Monon was opened to longer use (from 5 a.m. to midnight). Lilly Orchard shop a must for fall apple treats Have you been to the Lilly Orchard shop yet this fall for some apples? The shop on the grounds of the Park Tudor School is operated by Janet Williams Sweeney. This was a real operating orchard until in 1961 the Lilly Family donated the land to the School. The store has been in operation over 80 years. In August of 2011, Sweeney bought the shop which is open during the school year. Everything is fairly local. The apples come from the Wesler Orchard in New Paris, Ohio. Also available are healthy snacks, apple ciders, caramel photo by Bill Malcolm apples, sandwiches, and more. Dallas beckons with historic trolley, interesting neighborhoods Everything is bigger in Texas and Dallas is the king of them all. Fly nonstop (just a 1 hour 40 minutes trip) on American Airlines to DFW (or Southwest Airlines to Love Field) and either way take the new Orange Line light rail to downtown. Get off at West End Station to see the West End Historic District including the site of the historic Texas Book Depository where JFK was shot (and see several other JFK memorials and museums). Plan your trip at the Visitors Bureau at the Old Red Museum. The Dallas Aquarium is also nearby. Next enjoy the modern downtown architecture and the new park over the freeway near the Art Museum (known as Warren Park) in the Arts District. The huge park includes a restaurant and free books and magazines to read while you are there. Then hop on the free McKinney Avenue Trolley for a ride up Pearl Street / Uptown District where you can enjoy lunch or dinner at the many interesting restaurants. I got the airline crew rate of just $55 at The Atrium Hotel near DFW. I’d never been to Dallas and was really impressed and I explored it all on transit and by foot. It makes for a great weekend getaway. BRVA elections held at fall public meeting By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The annual public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) was held at the Indianapolis Art Center on October 21. The BRVA board of directors election is held during the annual meeting. This year there were six board positions open and there were 12 candidates. The meeting was held in the library of the Art Center, instead of in the auditorium. The candidates were available before the meeting for questions by the attendees. Current BRVA president Justin McKeand opened the meeting around 7:15pm. The library was packed with about 70 attendees. Justin explained that his oneyear term as BRVA president ends on Dec 31, 2014, when he will become past president and Elizabeth Marshall will take over as president for 2015. Justin presented slides on each of the BRVA subcommittees and what was accomplished in 2014. From time to time raffle prizes donated by local businesses were awarded to meeting attendees. Next, special recognition was paid to six who made special contributions to the Villlage - Jay Wetzel, Rich Bees, Micha Rabinowitch, Sue Zilisch, Brenda Rising-Moore, and Tom Healy. One cannot argue the benefits of regular exercise and fitness. The list of the positive attributes both mentally and physically is far reaching and it is such a benefit to one’s life when in good shape. However, there are other ways that fitness can affect lives in a very meaningful way: supporting the community and supporting research on diseases and disorders, and those who may be disadvantaged. You would be hard pressed to find an event such as a 5K run, a walk, bike ride, etc. that doesn’t support a cause. Examples include Race for the Cure (breast cancer), Vision Walk (retinitis pigmentosa), Step Out (diabetes), and Wish for Our Heroes Ride (armed forces). Not only is it awesome to see so many people out getting in a workout in nature, but it is doubly so to be supporting great causes. Improving the life of yourself and improving the life of others. Priceless! I was fortunate enough to be asked by one of my trainers to participate in a “marathon relay” in support of an organization called Back on My Feet. Here is a description of the program from the website: Back on My Feet (BoMF) is a national for-purpose organization that uses running to help those experiencing homelessness change the way they see themselves so they can make real change in their lives that results in employment and independent living. The organization’s mission is not to create runners within the homeless population, but to use running to create self-sufficiency in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. The program’s success is measured by how many Members obtaining independence through employment, job training and housing. Through dedication and hard work, Residential Members (those experiencing homelessness) earn the opportunity to create a new road for themselves. Running leads to personal transformation and dedication to the program leads to access to training, employment and housing resources. Through community and corporate support, the program strives to change the perception of homelessness. A couple of years ago, I wrote about BoMF in the Gazette after reading in Runner’s World about the woman from Philadelphia, PA who would run past a group of homeless men every morning. She eventually asked them to join her and the program grew from there to now 10 US cities; Indy being one of them (yeah!). So when I was given the opportunity to actually become directly involved, naturally I was game. What an amazing experience! The awesome event was impeccably organized, fun, and moving. Members of the program (the homeless runners and the runner volunteers) were out along the course supporting and directing the runners on the course. The entire cost of the event went directly to support the program which has been very successful in leading to employment and independent housing. This is just one more, and an amazing, example of how physical activity not only improves lives but can dramatically change lives in other ways! Speaking of good causes…So.Be.Fit. is holding its 3rd annual FREE Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning at 9:30am in support on St. Vincent De Paul food pantry (bring a canned good item). River Reflections There is ample opportunity to experience White River (which is really very brown) in the Village…by renting a kayak at Rusty Moon, putting in a canoe, or just sitting on the bank. I often find my way to the river’s edge by parking at the Art League then wandering through the sculpture garden to end up on the shore. What amazes me is that no matter the season, the River offers lessons: 1. The ripple of water moving over the river bed is how our Village got its name; 2. The water flows continuously no matter its depth; 3.Water stays in or near its banks unless torrential rain causes a flood; 4. Movement is constant although the river looks like it stays the same. These same kind of ripples and patterns can be seen elsewhere in our lives. Look at flowers and trees. The trees (at least in Indiana’s four seasons) know when to bloom, turn colors, and rest. I marvel that roses choose almost the same time each year to bloom as do violets, daffodils, and crocus in the spring, daylilies in July, and black-eyed Susans in August. It gives me pause to wonder how they have been “programmed” to do what they do. No less miraculous are our seasons. Growing up in Indiana, we always say, “Wait a few minutes and the weather will change!” With mostly small swings but sometime big variations, our weather still marches to four seasons. This past summer, the coolest on record, was a pleasant surprise. Our seasons know what to do and approximately when, but sometimes they do surprise us. The birds have their patterns too. Hummingbirds know when to head north and return south. House wrens come back to my yard in May. Goldfinches begin their nesting in late August. Winter birds return with the cool temperatures. The rhythms persist year in and year out. Somehow nature seems to understand the value of ripples and patterns. Could it be that if we humans honored them too, we would be a bit happier? The conventions I learned as I grew up had distinct patterns as well: youngsters were to respect their elders, manners and politeness were part of everyday activity, and childhood was to be just that with growing up to come in due course. Not always so today. I look at nature for the most part still accomplishing its intended course and not in chaos as our lives seem to be today. Oh that our village, neighborhoods, city, country, and world could have more of the natural world’s way of perpetuating time-honored patterns. Sometimes as I sit beside White River, I find myself philosophizing: 1. We need to keep moving no matter what happens. 2. We need guidelines so that our lives flow in the right directions; 3. Just as the river is what it is without pretense for being anything else, we must be content with who we are.
