mario@broadripplegazette.com SmallBox is “a growing team of thinkers and doers who are passionate advocates of meaningful work for clients and the community.” Their staff combines their talents in marketing, design, creative services and technology to help companies prosper on-line. Located at 6219 Guilford Avenue in the former Broad Ripple Library branch connected to School 80, CEO and Co-founder Jed Banner described his entrepreneurial path. “I started my first business in 1999 called ‘StuffE’ that was an EBay consignment 6219 Guilford Ave company. I was working with antiques dealers where I discovered and sold antiques on EBay. [I5 on map] That evolved into Antique Finder, an auction house that is up and running at 55th Place and www.smallbox.com Rural Street. During that time, we were using the web to do marketing and as I found out, my passion was around the web marketing more than selling stuff. I started Smallbox in 2006,” he explained. The other companies that Banner has created share a common bond. “Every business that I’ve started has been in Broad Ripple or South Broad Ripple. I just love the walkability, restaurants, bars, parks and the location to other areas of town, like the Northside and downtown. It has the right mix of cultural amenities,” he noted. Among those cultural amenities in Broad Ripple are projects that Banner has either solely created or been involved with. He co-founded SmallBox with Joe Downey, co-founded Antique Finder with Dan Ripley (www.antiquefinder.

Shawn Causey is the banner artist in this issue. Shawn works from her studio in south Broad Ripple. She received degrees in fine arts and music from Herron School of Art and Design and Butler University. In 2013 she was commissioned by The Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Buckingham Foundation to install her large scale steel mural, Bright City, in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Bright City won the Honor Award in public art at this year’s Monumental Awards. He was named Small Business Administration (SBA) Business Advocate of the Year in 2011. “Musical Family Tree started about ten years ago and its mission is to spread Indiana-based music. We have a 501(c)(3) that has been archiving Indiana bands for 10 years with over 1,000 bands at this point. We’ve been doing a lot of reviews, articles and special projects and will be focusing on ways to help youth expand their music in the community,” he said. While SmallBox utilizes technology, their employees’ skill sets and resources in helping clients make the company unique. “Technology is really secondary to us. We’re focused on marketing. How can we communicate that message for a client to their audience? The platform for that is usually digital where the culture powered marketing comes from. We speak to the ‘why’ of the client’s business and not just the ‘what.’ We build the solutions as well as build the marketing for a client that right now is as much a conversation as anything,” Banner emphasized. Their art of communication with a client and how they can help them achieve their objectives makes it a special work environment. Weekly meetings bring a genuine sense of camaraderie to the firm. SmallBox approach with clients through strategy and planning, creative and user experience design (also known as UX), development and technology, marketing and keeping employees engaged is part of their cultured-powered marketing philosophy. Designer Sarah Herbert is an accomplished painter whose murals can be seen around her hometown of Greenfield. Fellow designer Nick Klooz volunteers for the Indianapolis International Film Festival and uses his 3D degree in character animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design at the company. Chief Culture Officer Sara McGuyer balances marketing, human resources and business development in telling SmallBox story. She also volunteers on the IIFF board. Content Producer Teresa Tatum fine-tuned her writing skills at Live Nation, Clear Channel and Southern California Public Radio. Client Success Manager Kasey Bradley combines his journalism degree with his yen for marketing in helping Smallbox quality assurance practices operate well. Soft River Reading Series - poetry reading Monday, November 17 PRINTtEXT 652 E 52nd Street 7:00 PM, free (donations for traveling writers encouraged), all-ages
I used feel overwhelmed while reading poetry, I was afraid that I wasn’t doing it right. A few years ago I realized that my fear was silly. There is no right or wrong way to experience poetry, just let it wash over you. I do really enjoy it when I can hear the words in the poet’s voice; it brings a whole new appreciation for the work. You can do just that at PRINTtEXT on Monday, November 17. Bring a pillow to sit on and join five poets for a cozy evening of poetry. Here is a little bit about the poets: Joel Felix is traveling in support of his book Limbs of the Apple Tree Never Die and is from Seattle. Patrick Morrissey is the poetry editor of Chicago Review and is about to have his first book of poems published. Kaveh Akbar is from Indianapolis and is a poet, editor, and educator. He founded and edits Divedapper, serves as Poetry Editor for BOOTH. His writing has appeared in The Best American Nonrequired Reading, The New York Quarterly, The Dublin Quarterly, and more. Chris Forhan now lives Indianapolis and grew up in Seattle. He is the author of Forgive Us Our Happiness and has won several poetry prizes. He teaches in the MFA program at Butler University. Wendy Lee Spacek also lives in Indianapolis. She is a poet, curator of the Soft River, and unofficial distributor of small-press books. Her work has been published in LVNG Magazine and online through Monster House Press.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Local Celebrities, Icons and Survivors Come Together To Fight Breast Cancer with New Book Local celebrities, iconic figures, and breast-cancer survivors have banded together this month to help fight breast cancer by contributing to Just Peachey: Bearing Fruit, a cookbook filled with recipes to help the more than 39 million women, one in eight, struggling with breast cancer, and those who may be diagnosed with the disease this year. “Investing in research is absolutely paramount to winning the war against breast cancer,” said Stephanie Rufenbarger Lesher, trustee of the Catherine Peachey Fund and director of Just Peachey: Bearing Fruit. “As many in this field will tell you, breast cancer research has helped diagnose the disease at earlier stages, and those efforts have led to successful treatments.” The book honors the fight and memory of Catherine Peachey, a Hoosier who established herself as a world-renowned breast-cancer advocate, and one of the founders of the Indiana Breast Cancer Coalition. Peachey was one of the leaders in lobbying for passage of the Off-Label Drug Bill, which guarantees access to non-FDA approved anti-cancer drugs for cancer patients – a law that was subsequently passed in Indiana. Just Peachey: Bearing Fruit, the Catherine Peachey Fund’s 20th anniversary edition, not only features a collection of recipes, but also entertaining tips and breast health information. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 6 in the center section of the easy puzzle that contains the 1-3-5-8-9. The 6 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the space between the 3-8. The 6 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 5. The only space left is between the 1-9. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. New library branch location sought The lease is up in 2022 for the Glendale Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library according to Glendale Branch Manager Melissa Wooton. The Library currently leases the branch and is looking to build a new branch. Let’s push for a Village location. Georgia O’Keefe exhibit opens, winter film series planned, Fargo fun The Indianapolis Museum of Art’s new exhibit, George O’Keefe and the Southwestern Still Life has opened. Admission is $20. Spencer Willem Achieves Rank of Eagle Scout Spencer Willem, 17, has received Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. Willem, a member of Troop 441 (chartered by St. Pius X Catholic Church), is a senior at North Central High School and has been involved in Boy Scouts for 11 years. Willem achieved the Eagle rank after demonstrating leadership as an assistant senior patrol leader, senior patrol leader, patrol leader, troop guide and instructor before completing his Eagle project. Only 4 percent of Scouting’s national membership attains the rank of Eagle. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Willem installed 21 cubbies at Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center for youth to store their personal belongings while attending programs
at the center. There were about 24 volunteers who assisted Willem in completing his service project in May of 2014. Boy Scouts of America is a youth development organization that’s designed to prepare young people to make ethical and moral decisions throughout their lifetimes. The goals of Scouting consist of citizenship training, character development and personal fitness. Throughout the Boy Scout program, young people are encouraged to advance through ranks by fulfilling requirements in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills. Bordeaux and Bubbles for the Bird Nearly 500 supporters of the Ronald McDonald House of Indianapolis spent the evening in France last Friday night. I was there, beret on head and wine opener in hand, pouring a variety of bottles from the land of “oo-la-la.” The VIP reception involved Champagne. Remember, all champagne is sparkling wine but not all sparkling wine is Champagne. The French have that long standing rule that only sparkling wines made in the Champagne region of France can carry the name of Champagne. On this night, I offered samples of four outstanding champagnes. Yes, they are pricey, but if you are looking for something special to serve before the Thanksgiving meal, or a holiday gift for your favorite wine fan, these are all worth considering. After the VIP reception I poured wines from the Bordeaux region. I last visited the area about five years ago. It’s a beautiful city, the second largest in France, surrounded by rivers and vineyards. The red grape of note in a Bordeaux blend wine is merlot. It’s often snubbed elsewhere, but if you want a true, rich, bold expressive Bordeaux, Merlot makes the magic. Bordeaux reds are most popular but don’t overlook the whites, which are based on Sauvignon Blanc. For those who really don’t like the zippy tangy gooseberry edge of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or the soft peachy tones of California Sauvignon Blanc, give a white Bordeaux a try. The Sauvignon Blanc grape grown here has more of a mineral edge with a slight hint of lime. While many Bordeaux wines are priced through the stratosphere the ones I poured at the RMH event are not. And all were rated top favorites by at least 200 of the tasters that night. AND they are all quite affordable, available and would make scrumptious beverages for the bird on November 27th.

On its way to being jammy but takes a turn and lets the lush fully ripened red and black fruit come forward then pulls back with enough chewy tannins to purple your teeth. Jill A. Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith November is not my favorite month. It’s the beginning of miserable weather. It’s always cold, damp and dreary. It rains a lot. The pretty trees are gone and daylight is shorter. So I make the most of it and begin the countdown until April, when things burst with spring color and the emergence of warmth. I think about the positive things of November such as Thanksgiving, the blessing of family and friends and the delights of a delicious meal shared. November has another special day that doesn’t get the recognition it should – Veterans’ Day. I write about it every year because I am passionate about it. This year I got really close to it. My husband is a Navy veteran. He no longer has company benefits so when he had a minor surgery that needed to be performed two weeks ago he opted to go to the VA hospital for the first time. There’s been a lot of bad press lately about the Veterans Administration and the way their hospitals have been run. I am happy to tell you that I saw no problems. In fact it was quite the contrary. I shared the Navy life with him and it was a long time ago. Stepping through the doors of Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center was almost like being with family. It’s hard to describe, but if you are a Vet or a spouse you understand. It’s like a special club with a special initiation that no one else goes through. It bonds you. You are the same regardless of your differences. You have each other’s back. It doesn’t go away, not even decades later. When you step back into that world from the ordinary civilian world you feel it. I think it’s called pride…. a pride that only comes from giving of yourself to your country, for putting yourself in harm’s way for others, for putting your personal life on hold to be ready for whatever calls. I sat in the lobby waiting for my husband to have his blood drawn. I was armed for entertainment for what was to be a long day ahead. I had my book, IPad, and business assignments with me. Had I been at any other hospital, as in the past, I would have needed the distractions or been bored to death in the waiting room. Not here. This was people watching at its best! They were mostly old and men. The times are a changing though. We now have recent war veterans and they are likely to be younger and there will be more women. But on this day it was Viet Nam veterans who filled the halls. And they smiled and they talked and they said hello to everyone they passed. It was that bond, that camaraderie that was felt. I never pulled out my book or any of my work. The conversations were way too entertaining. It was not war stories. It was everything else. My favorite was the 74 year old black man who talked of his days in Detroit with his MoTown friends Marvin Gaye and the Temptations. He was/is a musician who was to play recently here at the Jazz Kitchen but he got sick. He was called for his treatment as was my husband and the conversation ended. In other hospitals it would have been time to draw on my busywork but I was antsy so I walked the halls of the main floor after getting lunch in the Patriot Café. Usually we are in such a hurry we don’t take notice of our surroundings in medical facilities. But on this day I took it all in. I paid attention to every glass case display, plaque, oil painting and Presidential portrait. This is a Federal building and it is honorable and it is decorated. When you come through the front doors you are met with a mural that says “Proud to Serve You”. I retrieved my husband when he was out of recovery. The staff went over his after care and sent him home with their final words... “Thank you for your service”. The next day a follow up phone message was left inquiring about him. The message ended with “Thank you for your service”. That is such a simple one liner but it is so respectful and so meaning full. Instead I like the following quote better. “To look at the paper is to raise a seashell to one’s ear and to be overwhelmed by the roar of humanity.” ― Alain de Botton, The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work While most major newspapers are downsizing or going digital, I want to champion the value of the Broad Ripple Gazette. You know not every community has a local newspaper still in print. I delight every two weeks when I get a new edition, and I hope other readers do also. The paper brings us: • Local advertisers with their specials and coupons so we can support “Buying Local” • A listing of the businesses in Broad Ripple by category • Notation of advertisers in the paper and dog friendly patios • Articles of history, new openings, issues of the Village • Lots of photos of the goings on in the area • Events coming up • Classifieds where locals can advertise goods and services • New banners each issue by local artists and readers • Website with photos and Gazette information Alan Hague, editor, published the first edition in May 2004. Backyard Birds had just opened. I approached Alan and told him I had also grown up in the area and would like to write about birds and nature in Broad Ripple. My first column appeared in December 2004. The musings have appeared ever since. I have written more than 244 Right in My Own Backyard columns. My topics range from nature, gardening, and birds to backyard activities, dogs, cats, Broad Ripple, and vintage experiences. This column has appeared in the front of the Gazette but lately is landing on page 23. How do I do it? Well, deadlines help plus I have a sister who is my editor and continually asks, “Send me your next column!” I have used a few guest columnists to give me respites. From an urban bee keeper to a fly fisherman, my guests have contributed interesting local color. With a friend, I have gone out and interviewed people on the streets of the Village. I have done research about Broad Ripple’s roots and also commented on issues to which we connect. Do you know you can contact the paper? Each columnist has an email and there is opportunity for letters to the editor. You can submit events to the calendar. I am surprised our classified ad section is not used more.
