Ezra’s Enlightened Café
Banner Artist of the issue Brandi Castle is the banner artist in this issue. Brandi was inspired to create this banner by Broad Ripple’s rich history. Starting with how the area earned its name, she was drawn to learn more about the community we all call home. Most residents can tell you the history of the Vogue, or about the amusement park that once rivaled Coney Island. Yet, most have never taken the time to pursue the details, like learning Ravenswood was once a destination resort. She created this piece to inspire our residents to do their own research, to expand our ties with our beloved neighborhood. While Brandi lived in Broad Ripple through college, she left to travel. Lucky to live in such places as the Bahamas, Raleigh, and Key West she was exposed to ample new experiences. It was not until she took a position as a photographer for the Dolphin Research Center that she returned to a lifelong passion, photography. Now she is back in Indianapolis splitting her time between the Red Key Tavern and creating pieces of art out of her home studio in South Broad Ripple. Owner Audrey Barron recently described the city’s first gluten and dairy-free café that she recently opened. “I’ve worked next door at the Playful Soul since 2010 as a massage therapist and for the past five years, I’ve been teaching classes on this type of food. This was a two-car garage and I thought ‘maybe we could put something there.’ I had this vision that I wanted to carry out and raised money through various sources to remodel this place and create the café. My dream was to create something that was shining like a bright light in a customer’s day. If they have celiac allergies, I wanted to create a café that had gluten-free items. People jump for joy when they come in here. They eat the food and have a good feeling after leaving,” she explained. “We have a couple of staple menu items that people can count on like the Granola Bowl (chili chocolate, granola, 6516 Ferguson St [C4 on map] bee pollen, goji berries, fresh organic almond milk and bananas), the Buddha Bowl (317) 255-3972 (organic greens, local honey, www.ezrasenlightenedcafe.com spice kale, carrot beets, sprouts, fermented vegetables, falafels, avocado with creamy lemon tahini dressing) and Nacho Mama’s Bean Bowl (slow cooked beans, quinoa over fresh greens topped with avocado, fermented vegetables, sprouts and pumpkin seeds). We also have a full list of juices, smoothies and an herbal elixir menu with drinks and shots that are made of high quality Chinese herbs. If people need to feel more relaxed or have more energy for the day, they can find it here. We serve organic, NON-GMO (genetically modified organism) items. Much of our produce comes from local farmers,” Ms. Barron mentioned. While the Buddha Bowl and Granola Bowl are available daily, entrée changes occur each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. With the exception of wheat-free tamari and honey, Ezra’s menu is almost completely soy-free and vegan, respectively. Finding a location was only a few steps away from Ms. Barron’s workplace. “It goes back to the Playful Soul. I love this area. It’s a special area. We focus on holistic items that fit in with it. I live close to Broad Ripple and I have a little one (Ezra).” (Her son is the inspiration behind the café’s name.) I knew that I wanted the word ‘enlightened’ in the name. The food enlightened your senses. It’s easier to connect it to with what makes you feel good. The cleaner the food you eat, the more you open up to these things. When we were creating the café, my son (Ezra) was born and it felt right to name the café after him. We opened in August,” she noted. Ms. Barron’s interest in healthy foods began early in life: “I grew up in Hartford City and gardened with my Mom and learned to appreciate herbs from my grandmother and basically utilized what Mother Nature provides instead of relying on pharmaceutical drugs. I am a graduate of the world-renowned Living Light Culinary Institute in Fort Brag, California in 2009. Since then, I have been sharing my knowledge of the healing benefits of whole foods through teaching classes, corporate lunch & learns, offering retreats, consulting and as a personal chef.” “We just rolled out our holiday menu, which can be found at: www. ezrasenlightenedcafe.com. We will be offering gift boxes of our treats and natural herbs. People can come in and grab it as a gift. Just thinking about this event is warming my heart! The evening promises to be full of beautiful music, kooky stories, and friendship making. Cara Jean Marcy’s haunting lyrics and songbird voice paired with Grover Parido’s gorgeous cello playing always make me happy. Stasia Demos has written some of the most quirky and perceptive songs that I’ve heard. If you’re lucky she’ll bring her accordion. Heather Styka music has a vintage feel with poetic lyrics. The evening will be in the spirit of a house concert. Everyone will be there to listen and song swapping and storytelling will abound. The price of admission covers chili, cornbread and beer from Outliers Brewing Company. Feel free to bring a side dish to share. If you haven’t been to the hostel it is the perfect time I get a tour of the great facility.

The “I Am Broad Ripple” movement started this summer after the highlypublicized violence in the Village. -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. There were about 55 in attendance at the November Ravenswood meeting held at the Glendale Christian Church at 1788 Haynes Avenue [BB29 on map]. There was a large table of snacks including a tray of chicken strips donated by the recently opened Chick-fil-A north of Glendale Town Center. Chief Malone of the Indianapolis Fire Department was at the meeting with a box of smoke detectors available for attendees. Chief Malone spoke about the open burning laws. He was asked about a rumor to close station 21. Chief Malone said that is no talk about closing it or any of the 44 stations. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Sgt. Hanson spoke of the terrible heroin problem in the area. There have been several drug-related deaths and recently 2 people were discovered in the church parking lot that had overdosed. Sgt. Hanson said that the recent increase in overdoses is a result of new cheaper and stronger drugs available. There were several very frustrated residents with questions about how to proceed to get known drug dealers out of their neighborhoods. There was a long discussion on the difficulties with the legal system in bringing these criminals to justice. The advice was to continue to call 911 every time drug activity is suspected. The response was that when the dealers were confronted and told the police would be called, they just IMPD Sgt. Hanson laughed and continued the illegal activity. The next meeting for Ravenswood is expected to be in March.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Sertoma Club of BR 2014-15 National Heritage Essay Contest
Information for principals and teachers about the National Heritage Essay Contest: Sertoma International is a service organization, founded in 1912. Sertoma is an acronym for “Service to Mankind”. The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple was chartered in 1958. Current membership is 115 men. We provide financial support to charitable causes in Central Indiana; conduct programs to promote prevention of hearing loss; and, sponsor an annual National Heritage Essay Contest for sixth grade students. Primary recipients of the club’s charitable donations are Noble of Indiana and the Cleft and Craniofacial Anomalies Program of the Riley Hospital for Children. Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple has sponsored the National Heritage Essay Contest for over 30 years for sixth grade students in public, private and parochial schools in the Greater Indianapolis area. “What Freedom Means to Me” is the topic we ask students to address in their essays. We hope that the contest complements teachers’ efforts to develop their young students’ critical thinking and writing skills. We believe that participation in the National Heritage Essay Contest encourages students to better understand the founding principles of our country and to consider how those principles affect their lives today. All students in participating sixth grade classrooms are encouraged to write and submit essays. In the previous 3 years, 3095 students in 175 classrooms in 43 schools have participated in our National Heritage Essay Contest and a total of $13,000 in prizes was awarded to winning students. Classroom participation period is late November through the first week of March. Teachers may use any portion of the allotted period for the essay contest. During March and early April our National Heritage Committee evaluates submitted essays and determines Classroom Winners, Finalists, Honorable Mention Recipients and Grand Prize Winners. A recognition luncheon for the three Grand Prize Winners will be held on May 6, 2015.

The existence of the nation’s public libraries as a virtual and physical place to meet emerging community needs makes them uniquely equipped to thrive in this new information-rich, knowledgebased society, according to a report by the Aspen Institute Dialogue on Public Libraries (www. aspeninstitute.org). A key component calls for better access to Library services in large unserved population areas of Marion County with the addition of several new or renovated branch locations. New or relocated branches are planned for Perry Township, the City of Lawrence, the North Michigan Road and West 38th Street corridors, and the Glendale and Brightwood areas. Renovations to modernize service capabilities are planned at the East Washington, Lawrence, Southport, Wayne and Warren branches, facilities constructed in the 1970s and ‘80s, except for the East Washington Branch, an original Carnegie Library built in 1909 that is not ADA accessible. Separate bond issues totaling $58 million currently are being considered by the IndianapolisMarion County City-County Council. The bond issues would be structured so that tax rates would not be increased for the Library. “The Library is responding to public demand with a well-researched and forward-looking approach to providing 21st century information services,” said Jackie Nytes, Library CEO. “Our goals are similar to what is occurring with public libraries across the country in finding ways to remain relevant in people’s lives.” The Indy Library’s plans are based on 18 months of citizen input that culminated in the approval of a Strategic Plan for the years 2015 – 2020 describing how the Library can help meet community needs in the areas of education, workforce readiness, early childhood literacy and business development. Volunteers planted 60 shrubs and 30 trees recently in phase two of the Bill Brink Memorial Garden project along the Monon Trail. The trees and shrubs were part of a Neighborhoods grant from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, not only did they bring the trees and shrubs but they also brought volunteers (80+), tools, stakes and most importantly fire pits and smores! Perk Up donated the coffee and hot chocolate. Marigold Clothing provided the bagels and bananas. Gardens of Growth showed up later in the day and watered in all the trees and shrubs. JR Walsh provided propane heaters (it was only in the 20’s when the planting began). “We are filled with gratitude for the support we have received to accomplish the Bill Brink Memorial Garden Project. Still more to come with a ribbon cutting event in the Spring and educational signage regarding native plants and the importance of their use in the landscape. We will also do some planting in the spring to fill in spots where plants were not available this Fall,” said Linda Shikany project coordinator.

This advertisement for American Fletcher National Bank ran in 1964. AFNB was at 706 Broad Ripple Avenue, where Chase is today. Morris Dodd was the bank manager. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked there for many years. The bank started out in Mustard Hall as Broad Ripple State Bank.

The Dance Magnet is proud to present its annual production of The Nutcracker. This holiday story of one girl’s journey into the Land of Sweets is brought to life by the talented dancers of BRMHS. This year’s production offers a special treat – Ripple alum turned pro and star of Dance Kaleidoscope, Jill Godwin, will be performing as a guest artist. We are honored to have Ms. Godwin returning to BRMHS – an early Christmas present for us all. Performances will be on December 10th. The matinee will begin at 3pm and tickets are $3. Unkillable When I saw the Runner’s World magazine Cover Contest go live, I didn’t even plan to enter. I didn’t like the idea of “selling myself” to get votes, pestering friends with daily Facebook reminders, or even thinking my personal cancer story was something that needed to be out in the world. Sometimes, however, it’s hard to ignore those unique moments of creative inspiration that hit you so hard you just KNOW you have to carry through. I was out running on the trails of Brown County, what I thought might be my last before surgery, when the turning gears in my mind churned out a catch phrase I couldn’t ignore, “Cancer is trying to kill me, but it’s going to have to catch me first.” I knew instantly that was a strong line for the contest, primarily because of its honesty, and then everything else fell in place. Thinking of the one word that described my running, I conjured up, “Unkillable”, because it’s truly how I want to feel, though I wasn’t even sure it was a legitimate word. Turns out, it is. Then, as if placed there intentionally, a feather lay in the middle of the packed trail just as I hit my turnaround point. I bent down, gently picked it up between two fingers and ran with it like that all the way back to the trail head. Using that feather, I knew how I wanted the photo to look. My submission was ready in my head. Upon returning home I crafted the entry, filled in the rest of the questions with a bit about my story and uploaded it all to the site, expecting nothing and only wanting to see what the response would be to a unique entry presentation, that was, admittedly, unlike most of the others. I pushed the entry out to Facebook and some of the running groups I engage with and suddenly the votes started coming in. A lot of them. Enough to put me in the top 10 of the 20 position leaderboard, as more runners uploaded their entries and solicited for votes. This continued on for days as I stayed on the leaderboard, but began slipping lower and lower as I lost interest in bugging friends with my solicitations for votes. The voting contest lasted a full month and I had other things to concern myself with, such as organizing for my benefit run and preparing for my second surgery. I soon gave up pushing the contest at all, not even checking back to see where I lay in the standings after falling out of the Top 20. It should be noted, however, the total votes only counted for 10% of the finalist selection criteria, so being off the leaderboard didn’t mean being out of the contest. Still, occupied with surgery and recovery, I stopped paying attention. I was laying in the hospital bed and realized the contest was over, yet my voting banner was still on my blog page. I took it down and checked the final tallies, you know, just for fun, and found I was somewhere in the 70s, I believe. Not too bad for not pushing the contest for weeks. I thought little else of the whole endeavor…until I checked my email the next day. Runner’s World had sent me a message, telling me I was a finalist and asking for a phone interview. They called me a day later, a conference call with the editor and “Chief Running Officer”, Bart Yasso, an icon in the running world. We talked for about 20 minutes, giving details about what led to my diagnosis, the past year of surgery, chemo, recovery, and then the surgery I just completed. I was still lying in the hospital bed, 50 staples running up my abdomen and just hours after having a few tubes pulled from deep within my body where the chemo was administered. I told them about how I managed to keep running despite the debilitating effects of chemotherapy, how the doctors didn’t expect me to be alive today, how I was told to “keep doing what you’re doing, because something is working”, and how I planned to get back to running as soon as I was recovered from the most recent surgery. Ultimately, I conveyed that my running might be a crucial element to my current status as a “survivor”, despite the more dire projections of my doctors. They relayed to me I was one of 10 finalists and we would all be showcased in the magazine in some way, but only two winners, 1 male and 1 female, would grace the cover. Considering the depth of each runner’s story, they confessed being torn in choosing only two runners for the cover, but that each winner would be contacted in a few weeks after the decision was made. I couldn’t believe I was even chosen as a finalist, so making the cover wasn’t even a point of potential dejection for me. I was truly flattered and humbled they chose my story out of the thousands of entries submitted to the contest, especially when I was nowhere near the leaderboard with points. I told my girlfriend, Laura, about the interview and she, with a sense of overconfidence, guaranteed my spot on the cover. I knew not to be so sure, and just held to the appreciation I had for being recognized and my experience being considered worthy and valuable to share with others. Then three weeks later, another email arrived, asking for a follow up call. Without hesitation they informed me… ”You won our cover contest.” I instantly called Laura, “Hey, I need a haircut.” From there it was a great deal of activity, from a photo shoot two weeks later, in which I began running only a week prior in preparation, to keeping entirely quiet about the whole ordeal due to a disclosure agreement, to wondering what sort of opportunities might arise from exposure on a national level, to being told I was going to be skyped in to Huff Post Live for the final reveal. To say it was exciting is an extreme understatement, but I also just wanted to enjoy the ride and expect nothing more. More, however, has come from this national exposure, from media requests, to a local story being picked up by Italian newspapers (we joke, “I’m huge in Italy!”), to the more important connections…with cancer patients. The type of cancer I have is so rare, just 1 to 2 per million, that the exposure I have been given has brought the disease and other patients more into the spotlight. Our experiences are so unique that it has been comforting to now be in contact with others who face the same circumstances, the same surgeries, the same

confusion about how to proceed in order to best combat the cancering in our bodies. It is, odd to say, comforting. I don’t feel as alone as I used to, or just another voice drowning in the sea of cancer patients, but now able to connect with others going through the same ordeals, and offer both experience and encouragement. That has made the contest more valuable than any benefit received from being in every bookstore and grocery across the country. I didn’t enter the contest for wholly egotistical reasons, but when creative lightning struck, I couldn’t let the opportunity go. I told myself, however, if for some reason I did end up winning, that I would use the opportunity to speak for others in my situation, to give exposure to those who have helped me along the way, to highlight the organizations doing great work for cancer patients and other issues dear to my heart, and to simply do the most good with this unique opportunity. I’m still coming to terms with this situation, knowing that RIGHT NOW my face (and exposed, scarred, scabbed body) is in every airport, grocery store, and bookstore across the country. It is quite surreal and the importance of this moment may not be felt until much later down the line, but I look forward to capitalizing on this exposure to really do the most good, to give voice to cancer patients, to encourage the value of healthy and active living, to acknowledge those in the medical trenches, and to, of course, keep running away from cancer…as fast as I can. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter O Tannenbaum, O Tannebaum With the holidays fast approaching, I’d like to sing the praises of the Christmas Tree. As you may recount, the tradition of the Christmas Tree to celebrate winter began centuries ago. Early people wanted to bring a bit a nature into their spaces to remind them of the outdoors with life-giving greens. The first decorated trees date back to the early 1500s, and the first reference in print was in Germany in the mid-1500s. Today Christmas trees decorate homes, landscapes, and businesses. To celebrate the birth of Christ and the winter solstice, evergreen trees or the shapes of the trees begin appearing soon after Thanksgiving. There are White House trees indoors and out, the tree in Rockefeller Center, and the tallest tree is right here in Indiana decorating Monument Circle. Each year growing up, my mother would send my father out to get a Christmas tree. Although our tree never tried to rival public trees, it did have great meaning in our Christmas celebration. Dad would pile us in his dark green pickup truck and head down to Farmer’s Market on Southeast Street. The open-air market was lined with vendors selling all kinds of trees. We would traipse after Dad as he carefully held up each tree he was considering, then asking the price. If it was too high, he would go on to the next likely candidate. The main consideration was short vs. long needles. A short or missing branch that left a part of the tree of choice lopsided somewhere always seemed to allude Dad. To help you choose your tree this year, I went to the Indiana Christmas Tree Growers Association. They lobby for real trees because they are renewable, recyclable, and all natural. When you go to a Christmas tree lot or farm, you will be partaking in a tradition of commercial tree sellers started back in the 1850s. The most popular trees you can choose from are the Scotch pine, Douglas fir, Frasier fir, and White pine.

While researching websites about Christmas trees (like the Indiana Christmas Tree Growers Association where you can find Indiana tree farms), I came across two interesting sites: Real Trees 4 Kids where teachers can find K-12 curriculum for teaching units and the National Christmas Tree Association for all information about Christmas trees. I also found the Trees for Troops, a program that provides farm-grown Christmas trees to armed forces members and their families in the U.S. and overseas. Contributions and volunteers, including growers and FedEx, have provided more than 139,000 trees since 2005. The tree project is going on again this year. To my surprise this national program began at the Dull’s Tree Farm in Thorntown, Indiana. Located in northwestern Boone County, about halfway between Lafayette and Indianapolis, Dull’s Tree Farm kicked off Trees for Troops on November 18 by shipping 200-300 trees. You can find out more information on the Trees for Troops website. If you have to make a choice this year between fresh or artificial, try a fresh tree. Here are some interesting closing facts about O Tannenbaum: • Live Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United States since about 1850. Be part of the tradition. • In the United States, there are more than 15,000 Christmas tree farms. There are approximately 350 million Christmas trees growing on U.S. farms. Approximately 100,000 people are employed full or part-time in the Christmas tree industry. Eighty percent of artificial trees worldwide are manufactured in China. Fresh trees equal “Grown and Made in the USA” jobs. • Artificial trees will last for six years in your home, but for centuries in a landfill. If you support recycling, fresh trees can be recycled and they make good mulch, landscape barriers, decorated trees for the birds. May a Fresh Tree deck your home this year! It’s important to clear leaves from our properties, sidewalks, and streets. When leaves pile up and get soggy they are a slipping hazard for pedestrians and block sewer drains causing flooding. Snow removal is also critical to create a positive experience for everyone who uses the Village. The city can cite businesses and residents for not keeping their sidewalks, drives, and access ramps clear of snow and ice (Sec. 431-106). Let’s all do our part to keep the Village accessible and safe.
