Banner Artist of the issue Laura Crawford is the banner artist in this issue. Laura is a Broad Ripple resident who has painted off and on her whole life. She paints in acrylics, scenes of movement and color. Cloudscapes are her latest challenge...big skies and rural scenes. Laura is inspired by her lovely, accomplished painter grandmother, Mary Belle Moffett and by her dear art club group of friends who create together and support each other. By day, Laura is a medical informatics nerd who works to improve the flow of knowledge between medical research and clinical practice. She lives happily and gratefully, rooted in Broad Ripple with her beloved sculptor/ engineer/fellow nerd husband Ninev Zia, their amazing, adventurous, collegeage son Taylor Zia, and Charlie, a singular, handsome old orange cat. mario@broadripplegazette.com Petrov Frame Atelier creates individual handmade and custom frames, provides restoration to antique frames and paintings, and offers professional gilding services. Proprietor Anatoly Petrov recently discussed his background and the history that brought him to Broad Ripple. “I am originally from central Siberia, near Lake Bakail, a very deep lake that holds about 20 percent of the world’s fresh water,” he explained. “I had an early interest in carpentry and woodworking. I was trained to be a polychrome wooden sculpture restorer in Russia. After I immigrated to America in 1997, I found a job at the Julius Lowy Frame and Restoring Company in upper Manhattan, the oldest frame house in New York City. It was a natural transition for me, because making frames utilizes the very same technique as making wooden sculptures. I worked at Julius Lowy for about two and a half years as a gilder.” He continued, “After I moved to Indianapolis, I had a studio at the Stutz 5172 N. College Ave Building downtown where I did frame restoration, [PP23 on map] and then moved the studio to my house, where I (317) 293-2122 made hand-crafted custom frames out of my garage www.petrovgilder.com for about three years. Although I was working as a gilder in framing and restoration, I wanted to know more about the retail side of the business, so I bought the custom framing shop on Lafayette Road. That shop had over 3,000 customers, and I added antique restoration, gilding, and painting restoration to their existing custom framing business.” The skills that Petrov learned originated in the Old World. “Italy is where picture framing started,” he said. “They took the items or images and placed a border around them, which developed into frames. In the early Renaissance, the painter had to wait for a frame to be designed before he could create the painting. Making frames by hand is a multi-step process that not many shops can offer. I make the frames from scratch using raw materials. I have a molder that gives shape to a frame, then I carve the details of the design. Once the frame is carved, the surface must be prepared with layers of gesso and clay before it can be gilded. After gilding, the frame is polished in a process known as burnishing. Finally, the frame is antiqued. In the end, the frames created are exact replicas of period

frames from centuries past.” Petrov continued, “It is truly rewarding to have the opportunity to put my name on the back of a frame. It is a chance to continue the traditions of the great painters. These frames often go back 500 years and have a history in themselves. What I do is create a museum-quality frame, to complement the picture in the best possible way, so it can last for centuries.” He is a member of the Society of Gilders, a small, close-knit community of artisans with about 300 members worldwide. There are only a few shops offering these services in the United States, and Petrov’s shop is the only one of its kind in Indianapolis. Walking into Petrov Frame Atelier is like visiting a local neighborhood art museum, with diverse oil and watercolor paintings on display for sale. He is planning to expand the selection as his business continues growing. “I always wanted to move to the Broad Ripple area because I loved it,” he said. “My wife grew up just three blocks from here and I feel this is a great place for our business to be. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Jingle books aims to ensure every child receives a book as a holiday gift

Indianapolis Mayor Ballard joined The Indianapolis Public Library and Indy Reads on Tuesday, December 16 at the Eagle Branch Library to introduce Jingle Books, a new program to provide free books for Indianapolis children. “Every child deserves to receive a book as a gift during the holiday season,” Mayor Ballard said. “Reading is meant to be fun. Books allow children to explore new places and ideas that they may not get to experience otherwise.” Jingle Books will make free children’s books available at all Indianapolis Public Library locations and at Indy Reads Books, located at 911 Mass Ave. People may select a book from any display to take home as a gift. People may also donate new or gently used children’s books by dropping them off at any Jingle Books location. Gift wrapping stations will be provided on site. “Indy Reads is honored to participate in this program,” said Travis DiNicola, Executive Director of Indy Reads. “Promoting literacy in the family is key to building a literate community. To eliminate adult illiteracy, we must also focus on reading to and with our children.” Jingle Books donations and selections will continue at all Indy Library locations through December 23, 2014.

State Creates Free County Travel Status Mobile App

The State of Indiana has created a free mobile app to provide Hoosiers with county travel status updates and alerts directly to their mobile devices. “This new app will be a great on-the-go resource for citizens and visitors to Indiana,” said Governor Mike Pence. “The travel advisory map has been one of the most popular pages on the State of Indiana website, particularly during times of inclement weather. The app will be even more convenient, and we hope many people will use this as a resource to make informed travel decisions.” In addition to weather, the app will also include notifications with regard to flooding, hazardous materials spills and other events that could affect travel. Last winter, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) County Travel Status Map was

The Indiana Travel Advisory app is available to download for iPhone (https://appsto.re/us/QHVw4.i) in the App Store, and Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gov.in.traveladvisory) in the Google Play Store. Features include: § Ability for users to set alerts for any county or counties they choose, up to every county in the state. When the travel status in a selected county is changed, the user will receive an alert notification. § Weather conditions for each county. Tapping on a county will display the temperature and an icon with the current conditions. § Contact information for county emergency management agencies, which are responsible for the status updates. The app is meant to be used as part of a system to stay aware of changing travel conditions. Other sources include local news, travel, weather and social media sites and apps. Indiana Travel Advisory is part of the IN.gov family of apps. The state has developed 12 different mobile apps to help serve citizens, including the IN.gov app (Apple and Android), which is a hub to access all the apps from the State.

Mobile Device Remote Printing at Glendale Branch!

Individuals now have the capability of using their Internet-connected smartphone or tablet (iOS, Android or Blackberry) from anywhere in the city to print documents directly to print stations at the Glendale Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library and other Library locations. This new offering meets an increased demand for such service and furthers the Library’s goal to enhance connectivity for patrons. There are two ways to connect with the Library’s remote printing service, via the Indy Library’s website (specific URL: http://www.imcpl.org/printing/mobile/) or by downloading the free PrinterOn app available from Google Play or iTunes. Users then designate where the printing will occur among seven Library locations that also include Central Library and the Garfield Park, Lawrence, Pike, Warren and Wayne branches. Following entry of the user’s email address to identify the print job, documents, photos or web pages can be selected for printing in black and white or color. Patrons have two hours after submission to pick up prints at their designated branch, where the process is completed by payment at the print station’s vending device. Black and white prints are 15 cents per page, color prints are 25 cents per page. Wireless printing from laptops at all Indy Library locations while patrons are visiting the Library is also available.

Holiday Hours - BMV and Library

Don Snemis, Commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), announced that license branches will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 25 and Friday, Dec. 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday. All license branches resume normal business hours on Saturday, Dec. 27. In addition, license branches will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 1 in observance of New Year’s Day. All license branches resume normal hours of operation on Friday, Jan. 2. All Indianapolis Public Libraries will be closed on December 24 & 25 for the Christmas holiday. Additionally, the Flanner House Branch will be closed on December 26. All libraries will close at 5 p.m. on December 31 and will remain closed on January 1, except the InfoZone, which will be open on January 1 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Additionally, the Flanner House Branch will be closed on January 2.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 9 in the middle section of the bottom row of the medium puzzle that contains the 2-3-4-6. The 9 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the left and right of the 2. The 9 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 4. Bubble, Bubble, Bubble As the year ends and another begins, I always think of one of my favorite pieces of prose: “Here’s to champagne the drink that takes away our troubles. It’s made from a dollars’ worth of wine and three dollars worth of bubbles.” All champagne IS sparkling wine but not all sparkling wine is champagne. Technically. The French say ONLY sparkling wines made in the Champagne region can be toasted as such. Mais oui. Many people say they don’t like champagne. Why? “Oh it gives me a headache,” they reply. Why? 98% will say “I always have a glass at New Year’s Eve and the next morning I wake up with SUCH a headache.” (Hmmm, somehow they forgot the growler of beer, and slew of craft cocktails they drank BEFORE the one glass of bubbly.) Another assault to the taste buds is wedding cake and champagne. Sparkling wines are mostly dry and robust and NOT sweet enough to pair with multi layers of butter cream frosting on triple layered cake. Desserts need wines/beverages SWEETER than the dessert to not send your palate into shock. Sparkling wine makes a great food partner and you don’t have to be extravagant. Try a bottle with a bowl of macaroni and cheese topped with crumbled bacon, or a blue cheese topped burger or pad thai noodles and I bet you experience a brand new appreciation of this bubbly form of wine. Price shouldn’t hold you back either. Sparkling wine is made around the world and is called prosecco, frizzante, cava, spumante. The balance of fruit and acid and FUN makes them an irresistible way to start a meal or enjoy everyday. (Can I find a man like that?!) Enough babbling about bubbles. Here are a few that are easy to find and a delight to discover. Freixenet Cava, Spain–SUPER value! In the sleek black bottle. Off dry, fruity and less than $10. Pommery Brut Rose, France–looks like sparkling rubies in the glass; crisp, dry with addictive aromas and flavors of currants, cranberry and wild strawberries. Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut, California–You can’t go wrong with ANY of the sparkling wines from this producer. The Brut is rich and creamy with a clean mineral finish. Jill A. Ah….the holidays are here again! Seems like it was just a year ago that this happened.  Each year I try to write about ways to keep up our fitness and physical activity during the frigid holiday temps; so we don’t fall off the wagon and turn into bon-bon couch potatoes. Us Hoosiers would agree that this can be quite the feat due to our general brutal winter seasons. The idea of getting moving (especially outdoors) and be quite unmotivating, so I wanted to share twelve tips for combating the winter enticement of curling up on the couch with a blanket instead of a mood elevating workout. I know it is close to Xmas but for those of you looking for a last minute gift (or for yourself) consider some of the following! But hitting the tree covered trails makes an EXTREME difference as the trees insulate the trails (kind of like an igloo effect). It is an awesome way to get a taste of the beauty of winter nature. So, having a pass for the entire year is a helpful way to motivate getting out there (dogs love them too!). My favorites are Eagle Creek Park (www.eaglecreekpark.org/) and Fort Benjamin Harrison Park (www.in.gov/dnr/files/ftharrison). Both have an abundance of trails and are in Indianapolis. Climb Time Indy or Hoosier Heights: These large indoor rock climbing gyms are a great way to get an indoor workout in a creative way. They have programs for all ages and abilities. Climb Time is in Castleton and Hoosier Heights have locations in Indianapolis and Bloomington. Find them at: climbtimeindy.com and hoosierheights.com Heart Rate Monitor: In my personal opinion ditch the Fitbit and similar models that “guess” your calorie burn and daily steps. Mine was always considerably off on distance, and hence calories as well. Consider getting a much more accurate measure of both by using a heart rate monitor such as a Garmin or Polar that measures heart rate, calories, distance, and even cadence. Higher end models can allow you to upload your workout into your computer so that you can actually “playback” and watch your activity; pretty cool training device! Garmin.com or polar.com Sign up for a race: Every weekend, year round, there are races such as 5 and 10ks. This is a great way to keep up training and also can involve the entire family. Try a (new) Class: Whether you are a current class go-er or not, trying a fitness class new to you is not only good for your body, but also for your mind especially during the dreary winter weather. There are so many styles of classes ranging from Zumba, TRX, Spinning and Yoga that anyone is sure to find their favorites to keep em coming back for more. IronMan Yurbuds: Great for yourself or a gift, these earbuds are my all-time favorite. I have always struggled with other kinds falling out of my ears and these puppies don’t budge one bit. If you also have this problem and enjoy listening to music while working out these are a must! Yurbuds.com Take advantage of winter only sports: The only time you can sled, snowshoe, cross country ski is in the winter, so take advantage of it. Most parks encourage these activities. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter A Christmas Banquet Life goes on at the North Pole, but not this year. On Christmas Eve day, a snowy owl appeared on a snow-covered blue spruce. His urgent call brought all out into the yard where he warned the elves and Santa that a monster snow storm was headed toward the North Pole on Christmas Night. “HO, HO, HO,” answered Santa. “No problem, the reindeer and I will be well on our journey around the world to visit every good girl and boy. Mr. Owl, I do appreciate your weather forecast. My only concern is leaving the Mrs. and all those who live here at the Pole.” “Whoo, whoo,” the owl replied, “This Christmas will be memorably different.” The elves and Mrs. Claus hurried about to get Santa on his way. The elves jammed his sleigh and bag full of toys, dolls, and gifts. His wife packed protein bars for the reindeer and Santa’s once-a-year favorite, white chocolate chip cranberry walnut cookies, along with a thermos of hot chocolate latte. Off he went, quite visible for a long time because the sky was growing darker and darker as he flew away. The first flakes started… one, two, three, fifty, one hundred and fifty, and one thousand. Snowy Owl’s forecast was materializing. Wind picked up. Bunnies burrowed, the birds took shelter under the eaves of the house and in tree hollows. The deer, bears, raccoons, opossums, and squirrels raised their heads; their noses could smell the storm. They all disappeared to their shelters. As Christmas Day dawned Mrs. Claus looked out to see the wind curling around the house. Snow was piling up one inch a minute. She shut the door. Her elves were everywhere in the house. With Santa and his reindeer gone, the elves were too exhausted and worried to sleep. They had not gone to their dormitory. So Mrs. Claus passed around the last of the cookies and hot chocolate, and she got herself a cup of tea and settled by the fire. “My dear elves. You have worked so hard this year. You loaded Santa’s sleigh with the best and sent him on his way. Don’t worry. You know he is wise and has made this trip in fog, rain, and sleet. He will be fine. So let’s plan the day after Christmas while we wait for him to return. You know you are all safe and warm here, but the rest of our animal friends may wake up very cold and hungry. What do you think we can do to give them a Christmas?” The first elf said, “When the snow stops, we can go outside and find them. Then we can wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.” The second elf said, “We can sing Christmas Carols to them.” Mrs. Claus said those were good ideas, “but what do you think they really need?” The third elf said, “I think they will be very hungry. Do you think we can feed them?” So all day was spent in preparations to give the birds and animals a Christmas banquet. Down to the root cellar to get carrots and apples. Out to the kitchen to make biscuits and popcorn. A few brave elves waded through the snow to Jenny Nyström, early 20th century Swedish get birdseed and corn. After this flurry illustrator. of work, Mrs. Claus saw quite a few yawns. “All right you elves…off to bed. Tomorrow will dawn soon enough and we will have many to feed until Santa comes back.” It’s a funny thing about nature…one day she can be downright nasty and the next day she is as beautiful, sunny and peaceful as can be. That was the day after Christmas this year. Mrs. Claus arose early and began giving directions. “Ready, elves, it’s time for us to be kind and generous. First group, go feed the birds. Second group, you take all the animals over 100 pounds. The last group, you feed the small critters.” The day was spent giving a holiday feast to all at the North Pole. When Santa arrived back, he noticed the happy chorus of chirping sounds and contented animals standing at the edge of the woods. Even though he was tired, with another “HO, HO, HO” he exclaimed, “What have you done? I can still feel the Christmas Spirit!” After Mrs. Claus recounted all that had been done, Santa declared, “Every year from now on, the day after Christmas, was reserved for all the creatures of the
