Volume 11 Number 7 Bobby Plump received the Sagamore of the Wabash award.
Camden’s Stained Glass could resemble a wing of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. President and Art Director Brook Camden recently reflected on his career. “I went to school for graphic design in Dayton, Ohio and ended up designing stained glass for a company there. I got in a position where I was designing and building for that company for a few years. Basically, I grew up in Kokomo and wanted to move closer to home. I knew about Fox Stained Glass Studios and their reputation and finally ended up getting a job there and managed their studio for the past ten 5345 Winthrop Avenue, Suite C years. Then I went out on my own following the retirement of [OO23 on map] Clare Fox,” he explained. He practices his craft in about (317) 426-5427 3,000 square feet of space at 5345 Winthrop Avenue, www.camdenstainedglass.com Suite C near the Monon Trail. “Everything here is custom built for this space. The hard part was trying to make a living while renovating the space. It took us almost a year to complete the

Volume 11 Number 10 To celebrate 10 years of the Gazette, we kicked off our 11th year by featuring local artists on the front page of each issue. This issue is the 17th in that series.
Raft Race Volume 11 Number 17 Participants of the old WNAP 93.1 Raft Races gathered at the White River Yacht Club for a reunion.
WARMfest Volume 11 Number 18 WARMfest returned to Broad Ripple Park for another Labor Day Weekend blast.
Banner Artist of the issue Gautam Rao is this issue’s banner artist. He is an Associate Professor of Art at Butler University where he has taught painting and design since 2004. The banner artwork showcases an original lettering design–bold, whimsical, slightly-retro–much like Broad Ripple itself. Originally from Washington D.C., Gautam has also lived in Bangalore, India. He earned a BFA at Boston University in 1999 and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. He is particularly interested in the intersection between art and design, creating both paintings and digital artwork. He founded Indy Type: The Indianapolis Typography Society and as an avid Sherlock Holmes fan, is a member of the Illustrious Clients of Indianapolis. His most recent solo exhibits were at Gallery 924 and the Stutz Gallery. He also recently exhibited his work at The Swope Art Museum, at Typeforce 5 in Chicago and in Art from the Heartland 2014 at the Indianapolis Art Center. See more of his work at gautamrao.net

Camden mentioned how his work takes shape, “It starts with a concept, when somebody comes to me with an idea. We do a scale drawing with color and an artistic rendering based on our discussion. At this point, we decide on what kind of glass we’re going to use and the different colors and textures available to create a finished product. Once the window is cut, we tape everything up to make sure we are happy with the glass selection, then the building process begins.” Camden Stained Glass address embraces historical significance. “Everybody knows Broad Ripple is a hard place to find a large space. I had looked for a place for about six months. We needed a workshop and a storefront and ended up in the exact location where Fox Stained Glass Studio was located about 30 years ago. The odds of this happening are incredible. We transferred everything down here from Fox Studios and Clare (Fox) is still involved behind the scenes with the studio. We’ve worked together for years and it’s been a fluid transition. I try to put every style of window that could cater to a client in the shop. Our services include custom design for religious, commercial and residential spaces along with minor repairs and glass etching. Everything we do is custom made,” he noted. “The most rewarding thing about my work is seeing the finished product and seeing the expression on people’s faces as they see it. We may work on something for two or three months and install it in one day. Everything that we’ve worked on comes to life. I look forward to continue using my knowledge and expertise in stained glass to help preserve and create history,” he concluded. Camden Stained Glass hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment. Inquiries can be answered at 426-5427. Details of their current projects and past work can be seen at their Facebook page: https://www.facebook. com/camdenstainedglassstudio and website: www.camdenstainedglass.com. Brook Camden and his staff are etching their own artistic legacy in their art seen locally and around the state. You can also discover their work at Camden Stained Glass located near the Monon Trail.

What is on your list of shows to see this year? Here are two to kick the new year off in style.
Shine Indy Presents - Tequila Party For Robots Friday, January 16 The Vogue 6259 N College Ave 21+, doors open 8:00 PM, show 9:00 PM, $10 I’m admit that the name of the show caught my eye. In exploring where the “Tequila Party For Robots” came from, I quickly realized that it is the name of a song by the Indianapolis indie band, Minute Details. And Minute Details has a brand new album (their first), that includes the song. I can’t wait to hear it. I want to drink tequila with robots too! The lineup includes other terrific Indy bands, Veseria, Brother O’ Brother, and bleedingkeys. And when was the last time you were at the Vogue? Now would be a good time to check it out again and support local music. I think it is grand that the Vogue continues to support local music by hosting them on their iconic stage.

Hostel Take Over series Zulu Nation presents: Rock the House! Friday, January 23 Indy Hostel 4903 Winthrop Avenue all-ages, 8:00 PM, $5 or $3 with donation (details below)
Have you been to Indy Hostel for a show yet? If you haven’t, make it a goal for 2015. The Hostel is a warm and cozy space to experience art and music. For the January edition of the Hostel Take Over music series, Universal Zulu Nation of Central Indiana is hosting a hip hop showcase and open mic evening. Live performances by Strong Roots Records’ own PHD (J.O. & The Klinik) & Black Eddie, Hinx Jones, The ProForms, Ben-Real, Rehema McNeil, and Sonny Paradise, with DJ Mayor Tom on the decks. I just love the term, “on the decks,” by the way! They are also collecting winter clothing (new or gently used) for Wheeler Mission Ministries.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

IPL files request for rate increase to cover rising costs
Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), requested a rate increase today with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to cover the rising operational cost of providing safe and reliable electricity, as well as enhanced customer service functions. If IPL’s request is approved by the IURC, new rates would go into effect toward the end of 2015. IPL currently has the lowest residential rates of the 20 largest cities in the U.S. “The people of IPL take pride in providing high reliability and great service to our customers, while also being efficient to keep our costs low,” said Kelly Huntington, IPL President and CEO. “As the costs to do business rise we must make adjustments to maintain the safe and reliable electric service our customers depend upon.” If approved, IPL’s request would result in the average residential customer seeing an increase of about $8 per month. The proposed rate increase will vary among business customers depending on rate class and usage. The requested rate increase will cover the escalation in costs of providing reliable electricity, including operation, maintenance and general business expenses. IPL ranks in the top 10 percent nationally in reliability. IPL has made improvements to customer service offerings including the following: Redesigning our bill statement to make it more informative and user-friendly; Investing in upgraded website and phone system features for a more user-friendly experience; Enhancing our self-service billing and payment options on IPLpower.com including a new EZ-Pay™ payment option which allow customers to make payments online using their credit card or debit card for a reduced fee; Making it easier for customers to report and receive information about outages day or night via our automated telephone system, social media or online at www.IPLpower.com IPL has programs available for customers to help manage costs including Budget Billing, which provides customers with predictable monthly payments by allowing you to pay the same amount for 11 months and then settle the difference on the 12th month. There are also a variety of Power ToolsSM programs to help customers reduce their household’s energy use. For more information on these resources and to see how this proposed rate increase may affect you specifically, go to IPLpower.com/answers to use our rate calculator.

Broad Ripple Amusement Park meeting By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com The Gazette recently held a Pop-Up History Saturday at Broad Ripple Park. About a dozen people attended. Union Jack Pub donated several pizzas and the Broad Ripple Park staff donated soft drinks. The subject of this History Saturday was specifically the history of the Broad Ripple Amusement Park that was at the current location of Broad Ripple Park. The goal was to draw a map of the locations of as many rides and buildings as we could. As the interviews progressed, it became clear that the reason why our previous amusement park history interviews had not turned up much information was because almost all of the amusement park was gone by the 1940s. Attendees included park neighbors, park visitors, park employees and relatives of park ride operators. Tom Becher told of his childhood days working concessions at the park in the late 1940s. He took the trolley from the east side on Indy to the park and made and sold hamburgers and hot dogs to people visiting the Broad Ripple pool, which apart from the run-down carousel, was the only attraction left in the park at the time. Ken Farmer told of his relatives that included William Hubbs, Lavern “Babe” Dodds, and Albert Dodds. They worked at the amusement park in its heyday, operating and maintaining rides. The Gazette will transcribe all of the interviews and follow The only remaining piece of the old amusement park is the up with several of the concrete hub of a ride. attendees for extended interviews to further our account of the old Broad Ripple Amusement Park. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the left section of the top row of the easy puzzle that contains the 3-4-5-8. The 7 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 3. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left and the right of the 8. The only space left is between the 5-4. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
Something Old, Something New My wine glass has been filled with some old favorites and new finds this new year. La Marca Prosecco–sleek, savvy, fizzy and dry this Italian sparkler is affordable and delicious. I shared a bottle with friends the other night as we discussed the ever changing landscape of the Broad Ripple “village”. Work is underway on several multi-story structures on the former sites of the VFW and Shell station. We wondered if each will hamper views and cast shadows on nearby outdoor restaurant patios along the Monon Trail. Or if the additional stress on the old Broad Ripple sewer system will be able to adjust. How will increased vehicle traffic mesh with pedestrians and bicyclists and 4-way stops? Looks like 2015 will be a year of discovery for the “village. I hope it is as pleasing as the La Marca. 2012 Columbia Winery Red Blend, Washington State–Smooth, easy drinking dry red blend of grapes including Cabernet Franc, a grape that Washington State growers do very well. Inviting aromas and rich full flavors of blackberry, black raspberry and cocoa. Easy to find, great value. 2012 Columbia Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington State–Another must have for those who like a full-bodied Cab but don’t want to break the bank. Priced under $13 and widely available. Soft notes of smoke and black fruit on the nose followed by creamy flavors of black cherry, and hint of licorice. Rocabela Vinho Verde Rose, Portugal–Dry pink wine for less than $5? Yep. Discovered at ALDI’s and delighted in the aromas of rose petal and cherries followed by crisp clean but nicely saturating flavors of wild strawberry, cranberry and almond.

American Village resident honored with Sagamore of the Wabash from Gov. Pence
By EUNICE TROTTER American Senior Communities
Nowadays the name Red Raiders is associated with college and high school football teams. But during World II, the name was well known to the Japanese who experienced bombs falling on them from the American jet fighters flown by Red Raiders. The Red Raiders achieved many firsts and are credited with numerous significant successful missions in the Southwest Pacific that helped win the war. William Porter “Bill” Goodman, now 96 years old, was a Red Raider. He and other U.S. Air Corps members of his unit were part of the 22nd Bombardment Group of the U.S. 5th Air Force. The Red Raiders were the first land-based Army bombers to hit Formosa from the Pacific Ocean side. They left an important Japanese base in flames and received numerous accolades and recognitions, including a Presidential Citation. “We were the beginning of pushing the Japanese back across the mountains of New Guinea,” said Mr. Goodman. For his heroic work, Mr. Goodman received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Gov. Mike Pence. It is the highest award the governor of Indiana bestows. The award was presented to Mr. Goodman at his home at American Village, a senior community operated by American Senior Communities in the Broad Ripple area. Mr. Goodman, who was a 2nd Lieutenant piloting a B-24 bomber, was waiting his turn to take off from a Philippines base when he saw Col. Richard W. (Reid) Robinson’s plane crash on take-off and all 10 occupants killed. Robinson was the leader of the 22nd. The name, Red Raiders, was in tribute to Robinson’s flaming red hair, said Mr. Goodman. “The reality of losing our buddies really hit when we returned from the day’s mission. As we departed from our plane, we could see the footlockers of the dead airmen gathered up and ready to be sent home,” said Mr. Goodman. In all, Mr. Goodman flew 38 combat missions with the 408th Squadron, each of them flown with the vigor of a warrior wanting to settle the score. On more than one occasion, enemy fired knocked out some of his plane’s engines, but each time, he was able to return safely back to the base. He remembers one incident when the landing wheels collapsed. The plane slid over 1,000 feet before it could be stopped. Mr. Goodman acquired an illness known as jungle rot, an infection of the feet caused by wet boots, which forced him into a hospital. Six weeks later on Aug. 6, 1945, the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima; three days later, a plutonium bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, ending the war. More than 418,000 Americans were killed during the war, which claimed an estimated 60 to 80 million lives of civilians and soldiers. Back at home waiting for his return were Mr. Goodman’s wife, Marjorie, and their 13-month-old daughter, who he saw for the first time after his discharge. The couple later had a son. He left his hometown, Chicago Heights, Ill., and came to Indianapolis to be a district sales manager for Inland Steel, where he worked for 42 years. In April 2013, Mr. Goodman was selected to be a part of Indiana Honor Flight No. 3. He was flown to Washington, D.C. and met by several hundred people waving flags and jockeying for a position to shake his and other veterans’ hands. Mr. Goodman was given the award during a ceremony at American Village.

OLD SIDEWALKS IN THE VILLAGE HAVE STREET NAMES EMBOSSED IN THE CONCRETE AT INTERSECTIONS. A FEW STILL REMAIN. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY?
Exercise Proper FIT-iquette If you are a regular gym-goer during the entire year, you will undoubtedly notice an upswing in attendance in the New Year due to those determined for better health. Many people get annoyed by the “newbies” because the gym is much more crowded than usual, which I understand. But I also urge you to be patient and applaud the fact that he or she is attempting a positive change. What is probably the biggest offender when the gym (or trail, or park) is busy is the lack of exercise etiquette. The needs and experience of others should be equally important as your own, and keeping that in mind would help for a positive health/ exercise relationship in and outside of the gym. Here are some tips for those new AND not new fitness fanatics to keep in mind in the New Year and always! I will admit that most of these tips have been broken by my clients from time to time (and maybe EVEN myself), so if you are reading this and you have done some of the following rest assured I will not name names. • When you are done using a piece of cardio equipment, spray and wipe it down. I have gotten on more treadmills and bikes drenched in sweat than I would like to divulge and it is downright disgusting! Same goes for any equipment. No one wants to use a sweaty weight. Yes these points seem obvious but they are often broken. • When using a fitness trail such as the Monon, stay on the right side so that others may pass. If on a bike say “on your left” so a runner or walker doesn’t veer over and create an accident. Also, it NEVER hurts to wave or say “good morning” to those braving the elements along with you. I see some of the same people out there year after year who have never smile or waved. What gives?! • Make sure to share if people would like to use equipment you are already on. You can alternate sets since you will need a short rest in between anyhow. • When you are in a car remember how nice it is for you when out on a walk or ride when drivers stop for you at cross walks . And when a driver lets you pass, thank them with a friendly wave. • Put away all of your equipment! A cluttered gym is very unsafe. • If at a fitness class, listen to the instructor as much as possible. They are there to lead you so you do not hurt yourself… oh and don’t listen to headphones. • If the cardio equipment is busy, please stick to the “30-minute rule” so that others can have a turn. You can always try another type of cardio machine if you prefer to go longer. • If there are new people at a class offer to let them be positioned closer to the instructor if they desire. • If you have your pet or child with you on the trail try to keep them on the correct side, and if you have a mean dog…please leave he or she at home! • Lastly, for the love of god, please do not slam down weights/equipment. It is disrespectful to the others at the gym. Imagine if every single person there did this? Not pleasant! Of course there are several more types of examples but the overall theme is clear. Be considerate to others in their efforts towards their health goals and, most likely and hopefully, others will do the same for you. GOOD LUCK with all of your new ventures in 2015 readers; both fitness related and otherwise!!

by Brandt Carter Test Your Cardinal IQ Winter’s landscape tends to be decidedly bleak and colorless – all the more cardinals are a welcome sight. The bright red of the male blazes on the drab tundra or white snow. To my thinking, these magnificent winged creatures are eye candy in our backyards. So to start the New Year, let’s see just how much you know about our state bird. Here is some cardinal trivia; see how well you do. (Answers at bottom of page): True or False True or False True or False True or False True or False True or False True or False True or False True or False
1. The female cardinal is a drab brown while the male cardinal is bright red. 2. The female cardinal sings more than the male cardinal. 3. A cardinal will attack its reflection in a window because it thinks this could be a new mate. 4. Although the colors of the male and female will differ, they do have the same black face and red-orange bill. 5. When the birds are courting, you may see a male cardinal feed the female cardinal. 6. Cardinals search out the best birdhouse to build their nest. 7. Cardinals can sing up to 32 different calls. 8. Cardinals were named after the red-robed cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church. 9. The first state to recognize a cardinal as its state mascot was in 1926. 10. What time of the day are you most likely to see cardinals at your birdfeeder ? ______________ 11. What number is associated with the Northern Cardinal? ____________. 12. Name the states that have the cardinal is their official bird. ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________
Yes, cardinals keep me interested in my backyard, especially during January. By offering black oil sunflower in seed or chips and safflower, they are constant diners at my birdfeeder. Their “cheer, cheer, cheer” or “purty, purty, purty” calls alert me to their presence. I have also appreciated the authors who have enjoyed these birds including Gene Stratton Porter in The Cardinal or Fannie Flagg’s A Redbird Christmas. Next time you see a cardinal in your yard, I hope you will know a bit more about our state bird. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
