Banner Artist of the issue The banner artist for this issue is Bart Voigt, owner of Voigt Creations. Mr. Voigt, a Broad Ripple resident for over 6 years, has been creating 3D computer models since the late 1980’s. During that time, he has developed artwork for multiple universities, architects, advertising agencies, engineering firms and museums. His renderings have been used in a wide range of endeavors, from product concepts and back yard improvements to large-scale construction and renovation projects. “The renderings I produce are as customized as I can make them. This means that I not only create the buildings, but also the light fixtures, landscaping, logos and signs; all of it. In fact, since most of my recent projects have been interior renovations, I create custom furniture, cabinetry, and fixtures as well! That wide range of necessary expertise is why I like creating customized renderings. I get to experience nearly all disciplines of 3D modeling.” In addition to high resolution rendering, Voigt Creations also develops custom animations, holograms, and virtual models for use in 3D printing. Other examples of his work can be seen on-line at www.voigtcreations.com. ARRAY Architecture + Interiors is located at 5367 N. College Avenue.

mario@broadripplegazette.com Array Architecture + Interiors founder and owner Jack Hollingsworth was born to design. “I was an art major at DePauw University and they asked me to do renderings of new buildings during a building campaign. At DePauw, I was doing furniture design which I still do today,” he explained. A walnut chair and sofa that he created can be seen in AAI’s office at 5367 N. College Avenue. Their customers can be found in Indiana and around the country as Hollingsworth is licensed in 13 states. “Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon is our largest project and largest client to date. We’re currently working on a skilled nursing wing on their second floor. We do mostly healthcare work. 5367 N. College Ave [OO23 on map] Another current project is a cancer center in (317) 255-3827 Joliet, Illinois that was a former Harley Davidson www.arrayai.com dealership. A project we have worked on is Medical Consultants in Muncie, which is a surgery center that was an old Kroger grocery store. We’re also working on a hybrid operating room, a special edition that is being built for Presence Healthcare in Urbana, which is the largest Catholic hospital in Illinois. A typical operating room is about 400 square feet, but a hybrid operating room is about 1,000 square feet,” Hollingsworth noted. Other notable AAI projects include Provena Cancer Center’s Renovation in Danville, Illinois, Putnam County Hospital’s Surgery and Maternity Suite Addition in Greencastle, Riley Children’s Hospital and University Hospital GI (GastroIntestinal) Renovation Methodist Medical Plaza’s locations in Indianapolis. His early architectural career was built on a different foundation. “Actually, I started out in retail where I designed most of the strip malls in Castleton Square and Lafayette Square in the 1980s. When I switched firms, one was starting with AutoCAD software where I got into production work and into healthcare. There are a lot of building codes, regulatory agencies and federal compliance to comply

with,” he mentioned. Jack works with Lindsi Piatt. “She was one of my students when I taught at IUPUI. We’ve worked together for over 10 years,” Hollingsworth said. Ms. Piatt has degrees in Architectural and Construction technology and Interior Design from Purdue University. She founded DESIGNLINK, Inc., an interior design studio, in July of 2013. Locating AAI at its current address was by design. “I owned part of this building. A very good friend of mine, Brian Spears, passed away and willed his half of the building to me and two other friends. It made sense to move my architectural firm here since I already know the tenants. There’s a good group of people here in the building. I can walk or ride my bike to work most of the time bringing my dog. I’ve lived in the Meridian-Kessler area for 33 years and am originally from Indianapolis. I’m a Ball State University graduate,” he said. photo courtesy of Jack Hollingsworth Some of Hollingsworth’s Jack Hollingsworth is founder and owner of Array clients are also his tenants. Architecture + Interiors. “I’m working on a restaurant for Yats in Nashville, Tennessee. Joe Vuskovich is the owner of their location next door (5363 N. College Avenue). I was Joe’s first paying customer when he opened. My daughter goes to Ohio State University and visits his location in Columbus frequently. He also designs residences. “I did a prairie school style house for Pat Chittenden, who is one of the owners of Ambrose Development in Bridgewater, located at 161st and North Meridian Street. His dad, Mike, is the CEO of Carmel St. Vincent’s Hospital. Most of the houses I’ve designed for individuals have been commercial clients of ours,” he added. You view samples AAI’s work in healthcare and residential work at: www. arrayai.com or call 255-3827 for questions. Reflecting on the rewards of his labor, Hollingsworth stated, “I really do like my work, the creative part of it and interacting with individuals. It’s been fun going into these buildings that I’ve designed and seeing their completion. It’s especially gratifying when people thank us for what we’ve done.” If you have a design in mind for a home or business, Jack Hollingsworth and Lindsi Piatt of Array Architecture + Interiors can help make your ideas a reality from their office near Broad Ripple.

Letters From Readers A Walk Through Broad Ripple by Ken Oguss
I am walking through Broad Ripple, my new neighborhood. I pass the courtyard of my apartment complex where the elder men of our community gather to talk and tell stories in the evenings. Down the unpaved alley onto a decorative stretch of recent sidewalk. Flowers and ornamental grasses grow on either side; beautiful prairie colors on tall stems. A modern cross box assures me in a friendly electronic voice that it is time to go. A light rain is falling yet I carry my unopened umbrella because I had planned to get a little wet… in order to stay cool. Men and women in three or four locations are out in front of their shops on this Saturday morning in June sweeping the sidewalks and picking up. It is a neat but important business, staying clean. I stride past numerous bars, cafes and eccentric shops. The telephone poles are covered with colorful flyers for concerts and local events. This area was busy until the wee hours last night. Now there is the feeling of the shops awakening after sleeping in. I mail two packages at our little post office. I was used to using self service mailing stations in the bigger location where I used to live. It is best to enter this office if you are not in a hurry. But I am getting used to that. Just as I am getting used to being hot most of the time in my little third floor apartment, built with little insulation back in the 60’s. A half mile from my new home I arrive at the Farmer’s Market behind the high school. Everyone has umbrellas up as they ponder the goods under 25 white awnings. There are organically grown herbs, cut or in little planters, fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, eggs, artisan breads, cookies, pies, honey and syrup, cut flowers, bird food, organic dog biscuits, seriously good coffee and tea, fresh hot soups, stews, BBQ and more. I buy the parsley that I need for a dinner recipe, tomatoes, and a quart of organic strawberries. I already have a huge tub of organic greens in my fridge but I am tempted to buy an assortment of lettuces and other tasty herbs. Next week I will return with no recipe and base my dinner on what I find here. As I walk back home I stop for bagels. The warm paper sack goes into my reusable shopping bag with my other goodies. The rain is still falling. It is going to be a warm day. A good day to let yourself get wet. A day to walk mindfully. A day to eat slowly and notice flavors. A day to pay attention to where I am now. I get home and put my things away. My wide brimmed sun hat hangs in the bathroom to dry. My floor fan blows away the humidity. I munch a pumpernickel bagel with salmon cream cheese. I take a sip of fresh coffee. I rinse a deep red strawberry. It is smaller than those you see in the large grocery stores. It was more expensive too, but I met the person who picked it. I bite into it slowly and deliberately. It tastes of a fresh kiss from the Earth. I am home in my new neighborhood.

Indianapolis citizens are invited to meet with Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes during her “We Love Our Libraries” tour of all Indy Library locations from Tuesday, January 27 through Wednesday, March 4. Visits are scheduled at the Glendale Branch, 6101 N. Keystone Avenue, on Tuesday, January 27 from 6 – 8 p.m., and at the College Avenue Branch, 4180 N. College Avenue, on Monday, March 2 from 2 – 4 p.m. In addition to giving people a chance to express their views about Library service, a focus of this year’s community meetings will be to gauge where individuals are on their personal digital journey. Questions include how digitally connected are Indianapolis residents, what activities would they like to learn more about, and how can the Library help in their experience. Results can assist the Library in determining which programs and services can be offered to help the community become more technologically savvy. Joining CEO Nytes will be the Library’s new Manager of Digitization, Meaghan Fukunaga, who will work to develop projects and community collaborations for the preservation and storage of items of local historic interest. For more information on the “We Love Our Libraries” tour, call 275-4022 or visit www.indypl.org.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Indy Library Cited for Excellence in Financial Reporting
For the 24th consecutive year, The Indianapolis Public Library has received the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. The Library has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement represents a significant accomplishment by a governmental unit and its management. “This recognition reflects the Library’s ongoing commitment to financial accountability and proper stewardship of public resources,” said Dorothy Crenshaw, President of the Library Board of Trustees. “It’s important for citizens to know that their public library is viewed at the highest accounting industry level as an efficient and responsible taxsupported institution.” The Library’s CAFR was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the reporting program, demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate the Library’s financial story and motivating potential users and user groups to read the CAFR. The GFOA is a non-profit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago, IL and Washington, D. C. Citizens can view the Library’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report online at www. indypl.org.
And that obsession ultimately leads to his downfall. “Frankenstein” has captured the public’s imagination for nearly 200 years. Shelley’s novel has been the inspiration for dozens of films and stage productions. Gunderman taps into this fascination and weaves a tale of “leadership gone bad,” a premise that we neglect at our own peril, he says. Gunderman examines Victor Frankenstein’s poor leadership qualities and their impact on the monster he created. Through careful analysis, he illustrates how the misguided actions of today’s leaders can have a direct impact on their subordinates. The Business of Medicine MBA Friday Lecture Series is a once-monthly continuing education event held in conjunction with the program’s on-campus residency sessions for physicians enrolled in the two-year program. While the mission of the series is to provide those students with additional viewpoints or insight into the challenges faced by health care providers, some presentations, like Gunderman’s, reach beyond the narrow scope of the health care community. “We are excited to have Dr. Gunderman share this unique view of leadership,” said Susannah Gawor, director of the Business of Medicine MBA program. “With the multitude of changes that are happening in the health care industry, strong leadership is an important topic and a main feature of our curriculum. Every organization, regardless of the industry, needs good leaders.” Though the event is free, seating is limited. Interested individuals are asked to RSVP to kbizmed@iupui.edu.

Discover leadership lessons from ‘Frankenstein’ at Kelley School’s Business of Medicine lecture
What can 21st-century managers learn about leadership from a 19th-century mad scientist? Indiana University Chancellor’s Professor Dr. Richard Gunderman will explore leadership lessons from Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” as part of the Kelley School’s Business of Medicine MBA Friday Lecture Series this Friday, Jan. 23. Gunderman will present “Frankenstein’s Leadership Monster” beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Hine Hall Auditorium (850 W. Michigan St.) on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. The event is free and open to the public. “What do we mean by leadership?” said Gunderman, who has published eight books, including “Leadership in Healthcare.” “That’s a question we’ll probably never bring to complete closure. Nor should we. Because it’s a question that each generation of future leaders needs to wrestle with for themselves.” Gunderman uses Shelley’s 1818 classic to create an evocative discussion that examines leadership as an “imaginative phenomenon.” Gunderman views “Frankenstein” as a cautionary tale of a man who is excessively enamored with science as the path to salvation.
Fred Hammond, the “father of urban gospel,” will headline Butler University’s 26th annual GospelFest on Saturday, February 7, at 7:00 p.m. in Clowes Memorial Hall, with special guests Hezekiah Walker and Le’Andria Johnson. Historic Postcard
A pastor’s handwritten 1868 sermon calling for the establishment of an Indianapolis library as well as photographs from Central Library’s 1916 cornerstone ceremony are part of an extensive on-line collection chronicling the rich history of The Indianapolis Public Library. The Lawrence J. Downey Library History Collection is the Library’s latest offering of digital images and recordings of historical and cultural interest to Indianapolis citizens, students and researchers. It is presented in memory of the Library’s former Associate Director who served the Indy Library for 42 years, retiring in 1988. Many of the images are included in Downey’s 1991 book, A Live Thing in the Whole Town, which provides a comprehensive history of the institution. A 2011 volume of the Library’s history, Stacks by Skip Berry and Mary Ellen Gadski, highlights other information and materials from Library archives. In addition to photos, newsletters, annual reports and other artifacts found in the Nina Mason Pulliam Indianapolis Special Collections Room at Central Library, the new digital collection includes documents that led to the creation of the city’s first public library, such as Reverend Hanford Edson’s Thanksgiving Day sermon, “A Plea for a Public Library.” Historic photos show the early use of the Library by children and patrons along with those of the city’s original branch buildings. The Indy Library’s overall digital collection includes historic Indianapolis firefighter photos and objects, Indianapolis Public Schools yearbooks, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce newsletters, English Opera House program, artifacts from The Children’s Museum, World War One posters, the correspondence of May Wright Sewall, historic Indianapolis postcards, oral histories from the Irvington neighborhood, and audio recordings of James Whitcomb Riley. To further the Library’s goal to expand access to materials of local interest, its new Manager of Digitization, Meaghan Obiko Fukunaga, will work to develop projects and community collaborations that can increase capacity for the preservation and storage of older format items. The Lawrence J. Downey Library History Collection is made possible by past and present Library employees and friends of Lawrence J. Downey through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation. The Foundation continues seeking funds to expand the Downey collection and begin other digitization projects. To access this collection, visit www.indypl.org and click on the Digital Collections link from the homepage.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the left section of the top row of the easy puzzle that contains the 1-7-8. The 5 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 7. The 5 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 1. The 5 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces below the 1. The only space left is directly to the right of the 8. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
Wine Country Capers 2015 - Part ONE As the temperatures plunged in Indiana, I had my nose in a glass of wine. Almost 300 wines in fact. The 2015 San Francisco Chronicle Wine competition was a record breaker. 6400 entries from across the country. That meant more judges and more spitting. We were split into panels of 3, which does help get through the many different categories of wine much more efficiently and effectively. My panel judged about 150 wines each day for three days. We had it all, white and red, from expensive Chardonnays to zesty Italian red blends. Being able to stay focused in mind, (relying on my 20+ years of wine business experience) and cleansed in palate (nibbling Graber olives, bread and celery helps there) helped me determine which wines earned a Double Gold, Gold, Silver or Bronze medal. Organizer Bob Fraser says wineries know that entering and winning medals from SFC means increased sales. So he was not surprised with the surge in entries. Wineries from New York, Virginia, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Washington and Arizona competed with the “big players” from California, and all did well. Read the final results on line at www.winejudging.com (Check out the INDIANA connection as winemaker and owner of Kokomo Wines, Erik Miller, Purdue Graduate and Kokomo Indiana native won big awards for his rich, lush Chardonnay, 2012 Russian River Valley Mukaida Reserve.) One of the categories that my panel judged was Barbera, a hearty yet smooth red wine from Italy that also loves California soil. It’s a great value and perfect for winter weather foods. Growers like it because the grape does well in a variety of soils and climates. It’s not too fussy and consistently produces drinkable juice. A few of the favorites judged that you can find around town include: • Locati Cellars 2012 Walla Walla Valley Mission Hills Estate • Villa Vallecito Vineyards 2010 Sierra Foothills • Old Creek Ranch Winery 2011 Santa Ynez Valley Estelle Vineyard I also judged a fun category called “Other White Varietals”. The best of class was a crazy white semi dry vidal wine infused with lavender. Christian W. Klay Winery 2013 Carbonated Lavender Infused Vidal Lavender Mist. It’s from Pennsylvania so odds are not good of being able to find it here. But maybe some Indiana winemakers will follow suit. The softly sweet wine smelled like spring! Our judges dinner was held at Coppola Winery. (Yes, film maker Francis Ford Coppola’s place!) It was a night to remember filled with movie memorabilia, impressive wines, first class food AND hosted by Francis and his wife Eleanor. I will share that evening with you in my next column. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Jill and doggyboy Harp live in Warfleigh, where she also consults and teaches in an effort to keep the doggyboy’s treat jar filled with biscuits and her freezer stocked with ice cream. THE FIRE STATION IN THE VILLAGE WAS BUILT IN THE EARLY TWENTIES. ORIGINALLY THIS WAS THE SITE OF THE WELLINGTON TOWN HALL.
Start, To Be Great The other week I was covering for a trainer that was on vacation; It is always nice to do this so I can get to know some of the faces better that I see in the gym frequently. I have made “small talk” with all of them at one point or another, so covering them is a great way to hear their story. One gal in particular gave me the inspiration for this article. She is always very friendly and peppy, and had achieved noticeable weight loss in the 2 months she had been coming so I was looking forward to working with her. She described to me that she had worked out at another gym but didn’t feel accountable and needed a change to kick-start her goals. My trainer has her journaling her food every day, and she is now motivated to do regular workouts outside of her sessions. She definitely has a glow about her, a new found confidence and to sum it up in a word: MOMENTUM. As we chatted more I noticed that she had a small triangle tattoo on her wrist. I asked her about it and she replied that it is the delta symbol and her mother told her growing up that it is the symbol for change, and would tell her to think about it particularly when she was being grumpy ;) She got the tattoo to remind her that change, if you want it, is always possible. She said “I was grumpy a lot more but much less after losing 25 pounds.” I chuckled at that statement as she boxed, lunged and planked through her workout. During my run the next day, I thought back to our conversation. While such a simple idea, the power of change is also a profound thought. The thought of making change to a bad, yet very ingrained, habit can be scary…like a big hairy beast standing in your path making it look impossible to pass. But that beast has a name: it is your first name with the last name DOUBT. I often refer to Newton’s first law of motion when discussing goals (aka change): An object either remains at rest or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force. A habit will not change on its own, and once the change begins it will not stop on its own. It is completely within your power. From a fitness standpoint look at a long term goal, say losing 50 pounds or running a half marathon, as a slow yet steady rolling ball. The stated goal in and of itself can sound daunting; maybe so much to not start the ball rolling at all due to the overwhelming feeling it can cause. But chop that goal into smaller, realistic pieces and it can be done in a healthy fashion. Look at your journey, fitness related or otherwise, as an obstacle course. Some challenges are going to be more struggling than others, and there will probably be “grumpy” moments here and there along the way, but turn the frustration into more momentum to overcome the hairy beast in your path. If something isn’t working, try another approach. There is no one way for everyone to achieve their dreams. I challenge you to draw or envision that delta symbol on your wrist (I’m not saying to go as far as get a tattoo ☺) and use it when that ball slows down or stops to kick it back into pace. I leave you with one of my favorite quotes by motivational speaker Zig Ziglar: “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

On January 14 Indiana basketball hall of fame member Bobby Plump was interviewed at Plump’s Last Shot, 6416 Cornell Avenue [D5 on map]. He was joined by his longtime friend and Chairman of the Board of the Seemac Corporation and fellow Milan Alum, Tom Kohlmeier. The interview can be seen at bleacherreport.com between now and the NCAA tournament. Coping with the Cold Baby, it’s cold outside! Winter is upon us, and the elements are as imposing as blazing hot sun is in summer. Beside the winter blues, one of the most common ailments that might attack these days is Cheilitis. Sounds horrid but alas, I’m talking about skin. From babies who suck their thumbs and youngsters who play outdoors to adults dealing with winter, chapped lips, chapped hands, and sometimes cracked fingers are just part of enduring an Indiana winter. So what’s the answer? Although there are a myriad of creams, lotions, and potions on the market today, I’ve been investigating time-honored remedies. In olden days, goose grease was a common ointment. Others would coat affected skin with glycerin and then wear cotton gloves. I saw a recipe for honey and lard, perfect ingredients for chapped skin. Deer tallow or buffalo fat were other greases applied to hands. One old-timer liked to slather pure butter on the skin, while another mother suggested a poultice of ground oatmeal and butter for her baby’s chapped thumb -- completely natural. Among the herbal remedies I found were applying the paper skin of an onion to sore lips and wrapping large dock leaves around chapped legs. A variety of concoctions were made with chicken fat and parsley, mutton (lamb) tallow and rosewater, buffalo tallow or possum fat, beeswax mixed with resin and tallow or turpentine, and sweet oil to help skin feel soft and encourage healing. Other early recipes included equal parts yellowroot, goldenseal, and elderbark simmered in lard. Folk remedies suggested that washing hands in the first snow of the season would prevent chapping. So how can we best deal with winter’s challenges to skin? Lip balms, lipstick and lip gloss keep lips hydrated. For hands, apply moisturizers before hands are completely dry. Thick creams and beeswax ointments are more effective than lotions. For extra help on hands and feet, clean, exfoliate, moisturize with Vaseline or intense creams, cover with socks or cotton gloves for a healing overnight treatment. There are perfectly satisfactory natural options as well. Rub lips with slices of cucumber or try aloe vera gel. Applying honey, a natural healer, to lips and following with Vaseline is a good 10-minute regimen. Then remove the excess with a soft, damp cloth. One more treatment possibility is to use 100% pure sweet almond oil and enough sugar to make a paste. Dip a soft brush (toothbrush) and soft scrub your lips. Then apply a lip balm. For hands and feet try olive oil. You may want to rub apple cider vinegar on them first. Coconut oil is being touted today as healing oil. It goes on greasy but doesn’t stay that way, plus it is all natural. Bag balm is also another ointment proclaimed as a cure-all. A mix of grape seed and olive oil, shea butter, and even mayonnaise are still other natural treatments. A good exfoliating scrub for dry hands is petroleum jelly mixed with sugar; rub briskly on hands and then rinse to soften skin. As we go through these winter paces, we need only to remind ourselves that this cold too will pass and spring will come again. Even now we’re gaining minutes of daylight each day so take care and look forward with anticipation. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
