John Coltrane Tribute at Jazz Kitchen It was as if John Coltrane was on stage at the Jazz Kitchen during the recent special concert at 54th and College. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking LP A Love Supreme by John Coltrane, the Rob Dixon Quintet (pictured above: Steve Allee, Jim Anderson, Rob Dixon, Steve Houghton, and Wayne Wallace) played the entire four-
movement composition, “Acknowledgement”, “Resolution”, “Pursuance”, and “Psalm”, to a sold-out crowd. Rob combined the final section, Psalm, with another Coltrane composition Alabama, which Coltrane wrote as a musical response to a brutal 1963 church bombing that killed four girls.

mario@broadripplegazette.com Entrepreneuress Hillary Steckler’s talent for interior design and antiques inspired her to open Verdigris, located at 5208 N. College Avenue. “This is my first business. I’ve lived in Meridian-Kessler for over 10 years and have always loved the eclectic homes in the area. I love antiques and spent a few years decorating my previous home with pieces from 5208 N. College Ave [PP23 on map] antique stores, consignment shops, and thrift stores, fixing them up as (317) 737-1526 necessary. When my friends and www.verdigrisindy.com family saw the finished product, they were very complimentary and a few asked me to help with their homes. I soon started looking for a way to make my hobby a career. After a series of what I consider ‘signs’ that it was the right time I decided to take the leap,” she explained. Ms. Steckler described her store: “I try to have a nice mix of styles from various time periods, as space allows. Some of the pieces that I currently have are from the 1920s and 1930s and are more ornate, but I also have simpler mid-century

The banner artist for this issue is Ashley Chew. “I studied Costume and Fashion Merchandising at Kent State University and am finishing up my degree in Fine Arts at Ivy Tech Community College this year and plan to enroll in another institute for Business. My banner artwork showcases the forever young, nostalgic and eccentric appeal that Broad Ripple Village possesses. I am originally from Chicago, IL, but Indianapolis has been my home for most of my 23 years. I currently reside in Broad Ripple where I paint out of my apartment stay-athome studio. In 2013 I was named RAW: Indianapolis Visual Artist of the Year. Aside from the Fine Arts and showing in local art shows, I have an interest in fashion. In 2014 alone, I worked Miami Swim Week and New York Fashion Week. I am also a former intern of our local Lucky B Boutique. My work has been commissioned from London to New York, from Los Angeles to Chicago. My first solo show will be at Madame Walker Theatre this March and will run the entire month. Their hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, Sunday by appointment and closed Monday. Their phone number is 737-1526. Verdigris has a unique meaning. “The word translates to ‘green of Greece.’ It’s basically the greenish-blue patina that develops from oxidation when copper or bronze is left out in the elements, the Statute of Liberty being the most famous example. In ancient Greece, they hung large copper pots and used acid to help create the sediment, then scraped it off and used it in paint. But it eventually quit being used because the color would continue to change over time. That’s why I like the term, because it alludes to the way things are continually changing,” she said. As Ms. Steckler contemplated a career change, a twilight stroll brought her vision to life. “I had just started to think about how I wanted to start a business. After walking back from dinner at the Aristocrat one evening, this place kind of found me.” She utilized her design skills in making changes to the shop’s drop ceiling. “I used textured wallpaper to cover the tiles and then spray painted them, using four different colors of metallic paint.” The result is reminiscent of a vintage ceiling design one might see in an old building. Ms. Steckler is open to featuring accessories from local artisans. “As Verdigris gets more established, I plan to try out local product lines. I would also like to have receptions to allow artists the chance to present their products here,” Ms. Steckler noted. A native of Plainfield, she majored in Mass Communications at the University of Evansville and got a master’s degree from IUPUI in Application Communications. Her experiences as a resident of the neighborhood have given her insight into the area’s demographics. “During grad school, when I worked at Moe & Johnnie’s, I got to know a lot of people in the neighborhood. It’s a very diverse neighborhood with students, younger people and young families who have a more modern aesthetic and might just want a few unique accessories. But then there are also those who want traditional antiques to go with the period of their homes,” she noted. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Group of antique dealers open SoBro Vintage Market south of BR
A group of antique dealers are opening a new antique mall, SoBro Vintage Market in the former location of Reclamation Indy at The Monon Shops 1051 E. 54th Street. The shop will offer a range of antiques and curiosities. The dealers, many from Reclamation, were surprised to learn that the aforementioned mall had vacated the building in early December. With substantial inventory and no venue, they decided to come together and open their own mall. “There are not many vintage stores in this area and I believe folks are happy there will be one in this location again,” said dealer Marshall Davis. Red Cross needs donors of all blood types
The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to help ensure a sufficient and diverse blood supply by giving blood this February. Since the beginning of the year, widespread flu and inclement winter weather in some parts of the country have prevented many regular donors from making or keeping their blood donation appointments. Healthy and diverse blood donors are needed to help maintain a sufficient blood supply. Diversity among blood donors is important because red blood cells carry markers that determine one’s blood type, and certain blood types are unique to specific racial and ethnic groups. Blood must be matched very closely for those patients with rare blood types or for those who need repeated transfusions. Patients are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone with a similar ethnicity. All blood types are needed, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. January BRVA public zoning meeting By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com The January public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee was held at the Indianapolis Art Center on the 27th. It was standing room only as there were about 100 in attendance. The meeting was called to order by committee chair Jim Holland.
There were four items on the agenda:
As we mentioned in a recent Gazette, Fine Estate Rugs and Gallery Two left the corner of Kessler and College. The plan is to relocate in the old Broadway Branch Library building which is across the street from the current College Branch Library. Here is the zoning variance request information from the Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD) staff, recommending approval: 2014-UV1-037 for property at 4186 North Broadway Street. Request: Variance of use of the Special Districts Zoning Ordinance and variance of development standards of the Sign Regulations to provide for an art gallery, rug cleaning and repair, appraisal, painting conservation, and fine art framing with related retail sales and services, and to provide for internally illuminated wall signs equaling 5.24% of the north front façade and 3.01% of the east front façade (maximum three percent of the front façade permitted). DMD Staff recommends approval of this petition, subject to the site plan file-dated November 26, 2014, and sign elevations file-dated December 31, 2014. The proposal would provide for a combined art gallery/rug cleaning and repair business with related sales and services. Other commercial office and retail uses would be excluded from this variance, as the request is limited in scope. The proposed use would have minimal impact to the area in regards to additional traffic, noise, hours of operation, and number of clientele compared to the previous use. The petitioner indicates the retail portion of the operation would be low impact, with an average of no more than 15 customers on any given day. With the minimal number of customers, staff would compare this operation favorably to a commercial office, permitted within the C-1 zoning district, which also permits a day care center, similar to the previous use. This site is located one block west from the 42nd Street and College Avenue intersection. Several parcels on 42nd Street are zoned C-3, and a community garden operates on 42nd street as well. The main parking lot entrance for the library is on Broadway Street, across from this site. There would be no external changes to the site, other than signage, as shown on the proposed site plan, file-dated November 26, 2014. The existing entrance is located on the east façade, away from any adjoining dwellings.

The Meridian Kessler Neighborhood Association (MKNA) Land Use Committee voted at their January meeting not to support this zoning request. The following is the explanation by the committee taken from MKNA.org:
Holland announced that since items A & C have already been heard before the committee, he proposed that there is no need to rehear them. Since those previous presentations to the BRVA, the petitioners have made the same presentations to the Department of Metropolitan Development DMD and now the BRVA committee can take a vote. There was a motion to approve both and both passed. Item B, 6265 Broadway Street presented. This proposal has also been presented before, so it was requested that the changes since last time be presented. Petitioner Greg Stoll said that there have been substantial changes. These include a key-accessed elevator, moving the trash container away from the neighbor and into the building, and the development of Laverock. According to the petitioner, Citizens Energy has now agreed to change its agreement from sharing half of the easement to now allow the project to develop all the way to the canal. This would allow for a 20-foot-wide esplanade along the canal in front of the new apartments. Another change was to remove the garages along Laverock, pull the building as far toward Laverock as possible which allows for garages opening toward the site’s courtyard. Holland suggested that a vote be delayed until the February meeting to allow the committee time to review the changes and hear how the city reacts to those changes. The petitioner replied, “We’ve presented this since March. We’ve made numerous changes and the problem we’re running into is you’re saying you won’t take a position until you hear from DMD, and DMD is saying they will not take a position until they hear from you. At this point we are really not in a position to make any more changes until someone takes a vote. We are here before you tonight asking that you take a vote.” After more discussions a motion was made to not support this petition. The committee then voted for this motion to not support the project. The last item was D, 6349 College Avenue, an information-only presentation on the current plans for the banks of the canal in association with the Coil Apartment project on the site of the old Shell station and the Laverock Apartments. The canal improvement budget is 2.5 million, including 2 million from the City, $250,000 each from Citizens Energy and Browning Investments. It will focus on the north bank from College to Guilford and include multi-level walkways, seating, lighting and water features. Jamie Browning stated that the major tenant of the new building could not yet be disclosed, but the announcement is coming soon. The next BRVA zoning meeting is scheduled for February 27 at 6pm at the Indianapolis Art Center.
The variance hearing is now scheduled for Tuesday March 3, 2015 at 1:00 pm. at the City County building downtown.
As most of you are aware, this property began its life in the 1950’s as a community asset housing the Broadway Library Branch. When the Library moved to its current building on College Avenue, MKNA was very active in keeping the former library building from being torn down and turned into a parking lot. We were adamant that there was a new chapter in the life of this building that would allow it to remain a community asset and the legacy of neighborhood-oriented service would continue. It was a huge win for our neighborhood when Kaleidoscope Youth Center first leased the property from the library board and began serving the neighborhood’s youth population. Children who previously had nowhere to go after school were now able to be a part of a program that kept them in a safe, educational environment. Several years later, as KYC continued their after-school and summer programs, they had an opportunity to purchase the building and vacant lot to the south from the library board. MKNA again stepped up to help facilitate KYC purchasing the property from the library board— yet another win for the neighborhood! For several more years, Kaleidoscope’s after-school and summer programs continued to be operated out of this facility. We regret that Kaleidoscope ultimately ended its programs as a result of changes in support from United Way and was left with an empty building. After their decision to close, MKNA representatives had several conversations with KYC board members and expressed our desire for this property to remain some sort of neighborhood-serving function. Last October, MKNA met with members of the KYC board and they indicated they had an offer to buy the property for a commercial use. We expressed our concerns and again stressed our desires to keep this a neighborhood-serving facility. From our perspective, it did not appear the building was ever ‘listed for sale’ or marketed well enough to seek interested buyers who could fit a service-oriented use and allow the legacy and mission of KYC to be carried on in a different capacity. Our Land Use Committee and Board of Directors both had very lengthy discussions about how to handle this case. Ultimately, we feel this building and adjacent play area together is a community asset and it would be a loss for our neighborhood to allow the property to become a commercial use. While there is ample commercial space in the neighborhood, there is very little space reserved for these special uses. As stewards of the community, we must look at the bigger picture and do what we feel is the best long-term decision. MKNA met this week with Curt Churchman, owner of Fine Estate Rugs, and members of the KYC board to explain our position. We greatly appreciate their willingness to meet and discuss, despite the fact that we know a compromise is not possible. If the zoning board votes in our favor, we have vowed to assist in any way possible to help Mr. Churchman find an appropriate location in the neighborhood for his business. We very much support his business and regret that this decision may negatively impact him. We also have offered our help to KYC to help find the right user for this property. We remain positive that if the property is more widely marketed, there will be interest from a purchaser that can utilize the property within its current ‘special use’ zoning classification. Lastly, MKNA wishes to again stress this is in no way an attack against Mr. Churchman and his business. We wish to see his business stay in our neighborhood and we will support him any way we can.

Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Nearly 300 Indianapolis Public Schools students took part in a state-qualifying archery tournament recently at BRMHS. IPS and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources have teamed up to bring the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) to the state’s largest school district for the third year in a row. Indiana NASP is designed to teach International-style target archery in physical education classes in grades 4-12. Core content covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, core-strengthening physical fitness and self-improvement.

& Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.
Here is the one-hundred fifty-second installment:
Sections 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the ordinance for the traction company AN ORDINANCE granting to INDIANAPOLIS NORTHERN TRACTION COMPANY, its successors and assigns, authority to construct, maintain an operate an interurban street railroad over, upon and along certain streets of the Town of Broad Ripple, in the County of Marion, and State of Indiana... SECTION 3. Whenever said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall construct any part of its railway upon any street that has not been built or improved to established grade by said town, then any such track or tracks shall be built as near as practicable to the surface of the street, but when any street has been built to an established grade by the town, then in every such case the said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall conform said tracks, switches, side-tracks and turn outs to such established grade, and said town shall, upon reasonable notice at all times by said Grantee, its successors or assigns, require the Town Engineer to furnish such grade upon all streets, and, also, the center line of all streets. SECTION 4. A “T� rail may be used in the construction of any of the tracks laid by said Grantee, its successors or assigns, and should any street or part of street be paved with brick, asphaltum, stone, concrete or other similar durable material, the track may be laid with rails at least five and three-fourths (5-3/4) inches in height, upon ties laid upon gravel or broken stone foundation, so that the top of the rail when laid shall be flush with the pavement on the outside; and said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall put in its track when its street is being paved so as not to unnecessarily delay the street contractor in his work, and all ties used in the construction of any tracks, side-tracks, turn outs or switches shall be laid and at all times kept and maintained at such depth as not to be exposed above the surface of the street, or interfere in any way with the public travel, beyond the extent reasonably necessary for the purpose of constructing and operating said road. SECTION 5. Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, may take up or alter any track laid by it, but it shall put the vacated street in as good condition for travel for the general public as it was immediately before such track was taken up; and in case of laying, relaying or repairing its track, said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall put the street in as good condition as it was before said laying, relaying or repairing was done, and when said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall occupy any street or part of any street that has been improved by said town by graveling the same, said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall repair all that portion of such street lying between the ends of the ties of its track, whenever the same becomes out of repair by reason of the maintenance and operation of said railway, and shall keep and at all times maintain the track in a condition so that the rails and ties of said track shall not interfere with the public travel on said streets more than is reasonably necessary to operate said railroad, and not to interfere with crossing of or driving upon said tracks by
vehicles, and when said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall occupy any street or part of any street that has been improved by said town by paving with stone, brick, asphaltum, concrete or other similar durable material, as said town may designate, said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall repair all that portion of such street lying between the rails of its tracks, with like durable material, whenever the same becomes out of repair by reason of the maintenance and operation of said railway, and on failure of said Grantee, its successors or assigns, to repair such part of such street after reasonable notice to it by said town so to do, then said town may make or cause to be made such repairs at the expense of Grantee, its successors or assigns. SECTION 6. Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, are hereby granted the right to construct, maintain and operate said railway on such route and over and across all bridges and railway tracks on said route, and the right of way along its tracks as fully as said Board of Trustees of said town can grant the same for uses and purposes expressed in this ordinance. The cars of said railroad shall be entitled to the track against all vehicles and persons, and when ever a car meets or overtakes a vehicle, person or persons, such vehicle, person or persons shall give way to the car, after sounding alarm by ringing gong or blowing whistle, except that funeral processions, and the fire department of said town while on duty in going to or coming from fires, shall have precedence over the cars of Grantee.

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
Wine Country Capers - Part Two (Picking up from last issue...) I joined 100 wine experts from across the country in early January to judge the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. (If you missed the last issue you can see the winners at www.winejudging.com) The 3 day event in Cloverdale, California included a “judges dinner” at Coppola Winery. ( Yes, it’s owned by filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola) It was a night to remember. We arrived and were handed a glass of the softly sweet fizzy Sophia sparkling wine. Outdoors, the winery looks like a movie set, sprawling and well groomed. Locals visit during the sunny Sonoma afternoons to enjoy its one-of-akind outdoor swimming area complete with cabanas and chairs. Indoors, the winery is filled with movie memorabilia from Coppola’s films (Martin Sheen’s jacket from Apocalypse Now) along with Italian family treasures. We were led on a creative and delicious “tasting” of some of the wineries latest vintages and newest labels (Two Arrowheads). Winemakers were set up at stations throughout the winery, where we sampled an appetizer to complement the wine.(Arancini and Diamond Claret=divine!) Our culinary adventure took us up the stairs and down, winding thru the large but well appointed winery and made it feel more like we were visiting family, not a business. Dinner was served in the HUGE barrel room at long, long tables. Food was served “family style”– with a bevy of exotic salads, meats, pastas, breads and desserts all brought to the table for sharing. Not an easy task considering there were 200 people to serve. The service was excellent and the food extraordinary. (Am still craving the farro salad with squid and roasted broccolini with lemon.) Francis and his wife Eleanor were at the dinner and made a point to welcome each of us. Truly gracious hosts. Coppola wines come in all price points and styles. Here are some sampled that evening, including a few new labels that are not yet on the market. 2014 Diamond Sauvignon Blanc–crisp, dry, lovely notes of white grapefruit 2012 Diamond Claret–dry red with earthy aromas and chewy black fruit tannins 2012 Francis Ford Coppola Reserve Chardonnay–oaky, buttery, creamy dry white 2012 Francis Ford Coppola Reserve Pinot Noir–full bodied dry red with notes of truffle and current. 2013 Sofia RED–blend of grenache and syrah; easy going with inviting notes of soft spice and red fruit. 2013 Sofia WHITE–blend of riesling and chardonnay; honeysuckle nose and off dry flavors of apples and pears. 2013 Two Arrowheads White–( NEW LABEL–not yet on market) blend of roussanne and viognier; exotic nose, creamy mouth feel. 2013 Two Arrowheads Cabernet Sauvignon–NEW LABEL–not yet on market) big, bold, dry red; black cherry, mocha, and cedar.

A Journey for Balance When Laura asked me to share my weight loss journey I said of course. I don’t feel that my story is unique or one of the harder ones, but I will share it with anyone who asks me because if it can help motivate someone else it is worth the time. I like to think of it more as a lifestyle change because there are so many factors that took me to an unhealthy place that if I didn’t take them into account I would not have been successful in getting to a healthier present! I was one of the bigger kids in my class all through school which was tough because kids can be so mean! I remember some of the things said to me as if it were yesterday and the people who said them never took a second to think about the effect they had me. My parent’s tried to keep me active as a child, but not to the point of being aggressive about it or ever making it out that I needed to because of my weight, thank goodness. It truly is amazing how the brain can twist things around. I thought if I went roller blading that day I could eat a full size bag of Doritos that night. Or if I had a rough, long day I deserved that giant piece of cake. Like I said I am not alone, most of us have told ourselves these things. I just didn’t want to accept how often I made these decisions and where they had gotten me. I was a “chubby” kid and I accepted that. It was easy. Then I became a chubby teenager and then chubby adult. After my older sister had her first child, she did Weight Watchers and loved it. She shared her experience with me but I wasn’t into it. It was probably a year later that I went back to her and asked her to tell me about it again, I was finally ready to make a change but I wanted it to be a full lifestyle change, not just a diet. I can’t stress this enough; a diet seemed like punishment to me and I had punished myself enough with my thoughts, lack of action, and acceptance of being chubby and bad food. So I signed up for Weight Watchers…this worked for me. I used my sister for support as I didn’t love the group leader and usually went to get weighed in then left. I like that Weight Watchers focuses on real foods so that I could adjust and design a plan within the program that worked for me. Yes, they have some they sell, portioned and prepackaged items, but that wasn’t for me. I love food, I have a passion/addiction to it, but now instead of eating whatever I can get my hands on, just having my hands on food is satisfying. The kitchen is my playground and creating healthy, tasty meals for myself and my husband is how I show love to us both. I could go on and on about food, as many of my clients, friends, and family members will tell you, but I don’t want to miss the opportunity to touch on other important aspect of my journey. Mentally, I needed to address those voices in my head. Voices of others from my past that have stuck with me and ones I had created. Even after losing fifty pounds, becoming a personal trainer and having people call me skinny I still have a warped picture in my mind of myself. I have gotten better over the years, but for example, after I finally got around to throwing away all my “fat” pants, which took about two years, I still struggle some days to throw out that old picture in my head. Exercise of course is needed to be successful, but I do not love it. Even though I am a trainer I will never lie to anyone about this. I do love what it has done for my body, heart, and mind; and to balance out my love for chocolate cake! I like to be active every day, so if I get in an hour of exercise I am good. I may not love it, but I try to be creative to keep it fresh and challenging, I am surprised sometimes at the gratification I feel I at the end of a workout. My success has to do with the mental, physical and emotional struggles that I have faced and the way I decided work through them. In the end it is about daily choices and balance, not deprivation. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Intrigue Awaits You don’t need to endure the winter blahs, and you don’t have to go to Florida to get a change of pace. Plan a themed exploration of Indianapolis. It’s a great time of year to get out and about and see local sites, revisit favorite locations, and do something in the city. So here are some suggestions: Museum Weekend in Indy - We have great museums for all ages. The Children’s Museum has exhibits for every age, not just children. The first Thursday of the month is free night. Many of the exhibits at the Indianapolis Museum of Art are free too. Add other museums to the day: the Eiteljorg, the Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis Art Center, the NCAA Hall of Champions, and the Indiana Historical Society. This could even keep you busy for a month. Don’t forget the Indiana Medical Museum, the Lilly Civil War Museum at the Circle, the Hook’s American Drug Store Museum, and the Speedway Museum. There is also the Rolls Royce Heritage Trust, and if you get an invitation, the Lilly Library at its downtown location. Historic Homes Weekend in Indy - Now this is an interesting tour for out-oftowners and locals. Start at Monument Circle and move out from that location stop at the Scottish Rite Cathedral (open for lunch), the Morris-Butler Home, James Whitcomb Riley Home in Lockerbie, the William Harrison Home, and make reservations at the 1888 Propylaeum for lunch. You can also visit the Lilly mansion at Oldfields. How about a library tour? The Indianapolis Marion County Public library is a great place to visit. It has views of the city in addition to books. Helpful librarians are available for any question. Visit a few more. Check out our Glendale Library and the Nora Library. Have you been in the one at 42nd and College? It is quite nice. Then connect with an historic Carnegie Library. You can visit the Spades Park Branch (1909) or the East Washington Branch (1909). These two libraries are examples of the great library movement in the United States. The best part is that your library card works at all of these branches. Don’t forget the Indiana State Library too. Church Tour - We have lovely structures that offer wonderful architectural exploration. Downtown, visit Christ Church Episcopal, St. John’s Catholic, Sacred Heart, and SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Roberts Park, North United Methodist and Broadway United Methodist are worth a stop to see their sanctuaries. Also on the list should be Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (once on the underground railroad). Check out the beauty at Trinity Episcopal and St. Paul’s Episcopal. As you go farther north, stop by Second Presbyterian Church. Farther north are new churches I have not even seen yet: Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints on 116th, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Indianapolis on 106th, and St. George Orthodox Christian Church on 116th. Our structures of faith are a celebration of our community’s faith. Garden Tour of Indianapolis. Even in the winter you can visit gardens! Many of the public gardens have impressive “bones” that show you where the gardens flourish in the spring and summer. Here are my favorites: Indianapolis White River Gardens, Oldfield gardens at the IMA, Trinity Episcopal Church, Garfield Sunken Gardens, Holcomb Gardens at Butler, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church cloistered garden, Coxhall Gardens. If you want to stop in for a breath of green, take time to visit the Garfield Park Conservatory (special seasonal exhibits) or the Greenhouse at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Historical Locations can be found in our city. Again starting at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (the Circle), check out the Indiana World War Memorial, the USS Indiana, the State Capitol, and Crown Hill Cemetery (on the National Historic Register). There is the Medal of Honor Memorial on the Canal and the 9/11 Memorial where you can see 111, 000-pound beams from the Twin Towers. Walk the historic Canal that was to connect us to the Erie Canal in the late 1800s. This only begins themes you can plan. How about a brewery tour, a wine tour, a theater tour? You could pick a district to explore like Fountain Square, Mass Avenue, Broad Ripple, Carmel, Nora, Zionsville, Tour public parks and our two state parks, Eagle Creek and Fort Harrison. Tour the sport facilities including Lucas Oil, Banker’s Life, and Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler. I can continue suggestions, but I think it is time to stop. I hope you have the idea. Yikes!
