Rev Peyton’s Album Release - SRO photo by Mario Morone

Bart Voigt with some of his graphic design work.

Voigt Creations - 3D on 52nd By Mario Morone

Indy CD and Vinyl was rocking hard on February 17 as The Big Damn Band entertained the full house. Rev Peyton (above) and Breezy (below) put on a great show at the release party for So Delicious! Support our local band and our local record stores and pick up a copy!

mario@broadripplegazette.com The inspiration for Bart Voigt’s career in technology and computer graphics began early in his life. He is the owner of Voigt Creations, located at 740 E. 52nd Street, Suite 8. “It’s what I grew up around. My father was a civil engineer and I gravitated toward that kind of education. I started playing with 3D designs in grade school. My father brought a mobile computer home one day. I started working with that with his permission. When we got our own computer later, I started working with AutoCAD and the 3D modeling capabilities it offered,” he recalled. Those initial experiences influenced his major in college. “I continued 740 E. 52nd St, Suite 8 working with 3D animation in college [PP24 on map] after transferring from engineering. Technical Graphics was the name of (317) 782-5499 the program at Purdue University. 3dprint.voigtcreations.com It was renamed Computer Graphic Technology. I’ve created landscape designs, prototypes and visuals for one of the permanent exhibits at the Indiana State Museum’s Walk through Time display the year that it opened. There are different time blocks of history where my animation work appears. Next to that, there is a large animation of a time lapse creation of what the Indiana landscape might have looked like during that period,” Voigt explained. His career continued to evolve in using 3D content. “I worked in programming and web page development for a while at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. While there, I would periodically do 3D modeling for the applications I was working on at the time. I moved down to Indianapolis after that and worked in multi-media. I gradually created more 3D animations every year and eventually worked directly under an architecture firm creating renderings and animations full-time. I did the animation for Reggie Miller’s house and also did the interior and exterior of Huntington College when they were working on the design for it. Some of the past projects I worked on were the renderings for the Indianapolis International Airport and IUPUI Cancer Center. Currently, I am working with numerous companies across the country, doing most of my work through the National Association of Church Design Builders,” he said. The diversity of his projects motivates him. “I like being challenged in working on new designs and intricate detail-oriented constructions. One of the coolest things I put together a couple of years ago was stepping into holographic technology. It’s still a little on the pricey side for high-end holograms. The high-end ones are what I prefer to work with. You can use anything for the content that can be represented in 3D. It’s much more robust than the lenticular keychains and collectors cups that use layering planes sliding across each other. The companies that I’ve talked to love the look of the holograms. Banner Artist of the issue The banner artist for this issue is Julie Young. “I have been actively creating for as long as I can remember. I started drawing at a very young age, and started painting when I was five. Art has always been a big part of my life, and I couldn’t imagine my life any differently. Art used to be something I did for myself: entertainment on rainy days, doodling on school papers to stay awake, painting out my feelings, escaping from my day, just getting ideas out, or creating fun characters and fantasy worlds that make the real world more fun. After years of using art as a form of self expression and a form of entertainment, I have chosen to let my artwork act as a tool to get messages out to others; messages spreading happiness, fun, love and light all with the intention of bringing positivity into the world. My artwork is full of bright colors, whimsical characters, surreal worlds, and lots of small detail to look for, providing a fun entertaining experience for the viewer. ” www.artbyjulieyoung.com Jyoung619@yahoo.com To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Broad Ripple Gazette we are featuring a year of local artists by allowing them to interpret our banner, while incorporating the words “The Broad Ripple Gazette”. Contact us at info@broadripplegazette.com to inquire if any open issues remain. Still looking for cartoonist, tattoo artist, pen and ink, etc.

of the price is the cost of the content developed to go into the project. Once you have enough content to develop a hologram, you have enough detail for an all-around the facility animation. The holographic printing of it is cheaper than getting a full-color model of it built or 3D model printed,” Voigt noted. “If all of the content is developed for putting it into a hologram, it is about six times less than the equivalent color 3D model. The 3D model would cost more to get printed depending on the detail when different artists work on it. They are easier to store and ship than a 3D model. I also like to see the reaction of people when they finally see the life-like representation of their design or idea. When you see something in your mind, it often needs to change a little when it becomes a reality. That’s one of the reasons I focus on realistic images more than stylized ones. I want people to see the reality in their designs. 3D can be used in a lot of different areas, like prototype design, general conceptual ideas and data representation in addition to architecture, games and movies. It can also be developed into different levels of detail, depending on what you want the message to be. The entire technology set has become very portable where digital images for a single high resolution rendering can be downloaded anywhere in the world and with remote meeting and screen-sharing technology, physical location becomes a non-issue,” he mentioned. Examples of his work can be seen at 3dprint.voigtcreations.com. For project inquiries, call 782-5499 or e-mail: bart@voigtcreations.com. Bart Voigt has created artwork for advertising agencies, architects, engineering firms, museums and universities. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Here is a new technique. Let’s put a 1 in the center section of the HARD puzzle which contains 2-4-6-7. Using our previous method, we can narrow the location of the 1 in the middle section of the top row first. The 1 in the right section of the top row and the 1 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates all spaces in the middle section of the top row except for either next to the 6 or the 9. Regardless of those two locations, that will eliminate the three space in the center column of the center section. The 1 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the space below the 2-6. The only space left is directly above the 4-7 in the center section. You have now learned another technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

This sounds really cool, even in my bumbling attempt to describe the event. Acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and indie-folk troubadour Sufjan Stevens is releasing his newest album in April. You have the chance to hear it first, at a listening event at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Indy CD & Vinyl will stream the album, Carrie & Lowell, for an exclusive listening party – bring your favorite headphones or borrow a pair from the IMA. You can hear the whole record before the rest of the world. There are only nine advance listening parties scheduled, and this is the only one in the United States. The event is all-ages - beer and snacks will be available for purchase. (Alcohol for 21+ with valid ID). A ticket to the event allows entry into the IMA Pop-Up Park for a special advance listen in a curated environment before the worldwide release. It also includes a limited edition clear vinyl copy of the album, a download code for a Sufjan courtesy of asthmatickitty.com Stevens song, and a gift bag Sufjan Stevens from Indy CD & Vinyl. To celebrate the release of the album, Stevens will start his North America tour in April. The headline dates includes a stop in Indianapolis at the Old National Center at The Murat. Presale tickets for the U.S. dates and further information are available at carrieandlowell.com/tour. Early reviews are calling this Sufjan Steven’s best record – and I think the opportunity to hear it is this unusual setting shouldn’t be missed! Tickets will go on sale February 20, and the listening parties will probably sell out, I suggested purchasing a ticket ahead of time. Visit Indy CD & Vinyl (806 Broad Ripple Avenue) for tickets and more details.

Poetic Thoughts

BRMHS band playing with Zach Lapidus in the Gene Poston Auditorium.

Zach Lapidus plays with band at BRMHS By Jessica Parker

Broad Ripple Magnet High School (BRMHS) hosted Zach Lapidus, a nationally acclaimed pianist and finalist of the American Pianist Association Jazz Fellowship Contest, Monday through Wednesday (Jan. 26 - 28). This jazz fellow mastermind spent time interacting with Ripple Rockets of all grade levels and rehearsing with the jazz band, which culminated in a concert on Wednesday, January 28th where he put the Gene Poston Auditorium in an uproar of commending applause. The Oregon native and IU graduate returned to his second home from his busy life in the Big Apple to teach students what jazz is and how to improvise. He tapped into memories of performing at the Jazz Kitchen and noted how Indy’s food is “more inexpensive than New York’s.” Lapidus discovered his ear for instrumental jazz music at age eight where he learned to improvise and flow with the moment from early jazz ancestors like Miles Davis and BB King. He granted the knowledge that blues is the founder of musical language and swing conceived the beloved jazz. He began his euphonic journey at IU’s music school where he was further inspired and attained his devotion for working hard. While attending the university, he encountered musicians more talented and with innate abilities, but made it his mission that no one would work as hard as he would. “It doesn’t matter where you start, distance is measured in how hard you work.” He signifies the power of hard work, and this guy knows a thing or two about working hard. After acquiring the necessities gained from college and second-hand knowledge from a close friend and saxist, Frank Glover, Lapidus spread his wings and migrated north to New York where he explored more challenging music. There he takes on music as a full time job and teaches piano at Bloomingdale School of Music. “I love music about 70% of the time,” he said. Lapidus has exercised it enough that he accepts the good and bad that comes with his demanding career. Not to mention he lives in New York where you can grow accustomed to pretty much anything in a city where NCIS is filmed. At the concert Wednesday evening, Lapidus and Bryan Thompson, BRMHS senior and aspiring saxist, killed the show in their jazz selection “Killer Joe.” “Killer Joe” was composed of bass, sax, and piano and the crowd sat mesmerized as Lapidus’s fingers ornated the piano keys. His foot moved just as harmoniously with the tempo, as Bryan fed off the energy and turned it into his own. The crowd soaked up the energy like a sponge. The concert concluded in a piano ad-lib solo by none other than the guest of honor, and the audience’s sponge released its energy via thunderous hand claps. His advice for aspiring musicians: “Tap into the feeling of the moment when you’re performing and improvise. Put your mind into a blank space, and listen to near ideas.” And it is OK to get nervous, Zach Lapidus still does. In fact, “small amount of nerves makes everything better.”

Below are 2 poems I wrote on October 16, 2014.

 Do Not Meditate On Me You will never get it If you meditate on me The secrets lie within. It is certainly no sin to find the Cosmos as a mustard seed in the Soul.

Cold hands, warm hearts took on a whole new meaning Saturday the 14th at the annual Perk Up Valentine’s German Dinner. Last year guests had to get through a half of a foot of snow to enjoy the night of food and fellowship. This year, the gusty winds and sub-zero temperatures made arriving at the cozy cafe on Cornell even more of a Valentine’s treat. It was the 6th year that owners/bakers/culinary magicians Alice Matsuo and Jeanette Footman hosted two dozen guests serving up a multi-course meal influenced by their German heritages. (Five extraordinary courses started with smoked salmon, then a clear broth with cabbage wrapped sausage, followed by a refreshing carrot/cabbage salad dressed with ginger dressing, then an apricot/ cranberry stuffed pork loin roast with mustard sauce & potato croquettes, and ending with home made apple strudel with hot vanilla sauce and ice cream. Oh yes, Perk Up hand-roasted coffees, espressos and teas rounded out the meal.) The NCHS Jazz trio “Groove IN” warmed up guests as they entered and sipped on a fruit punch aperitif. Once seated, guests selected a glass or bottle of wine to go with their meal. Dulce and John from Crush and Brew (www.Crushandbrew.com) provided an affordable and assorted selection. The favorites of the night included: Sombres Chardonnay Reserva–tropical fruit, creamy, Simple Life Pinot Noir–dark red fruit and notes of sandalwood and clove Sombres Del Sol Cabernet Reserva–smooth baby smooth--dark black fruit and hints of mocha. Domaine Bousquet Malbec–intense blackberry, mulberry and spice. Rich finish La Fiera Moscato–crisp stone fruit off dry and delightful While Alice and Jeanette prepared the food, their wonderful friends Veronika and Jenny lent a hand in the kitchen and the dining room. The night ended with Alice’s husband Inacio gifting each couple with his hand-made, precision cut Valentines. These are TRULY pieces of art. And a wonderful reflection of the artistry and passion that Alice and Jeanette offered on the plates. It was my 5th time to be able to talk wine and serve the cuisine to the guests, most have attended previous dinners, so the evening is really more like a family reunion. If you want to come next year, I suggest you make a reservation NOW. Jill A. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Sweet Sign of Spring These days I’m keeping an eye on the big sugar maple tree in my yard. I’m eager for it to begin oozing sap. Freezing nights and thawing days warmed by sun cause the tree to weep liquid that makes its trunk glisten and icicles form. I welcome this indication that spring is on its way. Maple trees that only a few months ago were blazing with fall color will soon be releasing the hidden treasure that can be turned into golden syrup or creamy candy. Maple syrup is not just a Vermont or Canadian product. Some 100 producers belong to the Indiana Maple Syrup Association. You can find their products at farmers’ markets and at the Indiana State Fair. In case you have the yen to enjoy some great fun, I’ll alert you to the 24th annual Maple Syrup Festival in Salem, IN. It’s happening the weekends of February 28, March 1 and March 7, 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the chance to enjoy pancakes or waffles with your choice of strawberries, blueberries or apples, chocolate chips, ice cream or whipped cream and maple syrup. There are lots of activities and an assortment of maple products for sale, including maple cotton candy. The next county north also offers activities for maple syrup fans. Maple Syrup Program at Bray Family, Homestead Park, February 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., myhamiltoncountyparks.com, or if you are more adventuresome and want hands on Making Maple Syrup, February 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monon Community Center & Waterpark at Central Park, carmelclayparks.com. Another popular Maple fest with farm tours is in Rockville, Indiana on February 21-22 & February 28-March 1 at the 4-H Fairgrounds. You don’t have to be a commercial producer to make your own maple syrup. When the sap starts flowing, I know people right around here who tap their trees with a spigot and hang buckets to collect sap. I don’t know how much syrup they end up with but doubt that it’s very much because it takes about 40 gallons of sap to produce a gallon of syrup. Commercial syrup production is quite fascinating. Producers tend to put one tap per trunk in trees that are 10-12 inches in diameter. They can have thousands of taps and pipelines leading to their sugar houses. Because sap is mostly water the first step in syrup making involves reverse osmosis. Then comes the boiling down in large metal evaporators over wood fires. When the liquid reaches 219 degrees, the cooking ends and syrup is ready for a final filtering. It then gets graded for color and flavor—the darker the syrup, the deeper that rich maple flavor. Each time I’m reminded of this laborious process I appreciate the maple syrup I enjoy all the more and don’t begrudge the price I pay for it. In the U.S. only syrup that is made totally from maple sap can be sold as maple syrup, distinguishing it from maple-flavored syrups. Even if we don’t tap our trees or cook sap into syrup, we can be mindful of this first harvest of the awakening growing season, and what better way to celebrate it than with some maple syrup on our pancakes or French toast? Nature’s goodness is never ending and maple syrup gives us the taste of spring all year long. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Zoning follow-up - 42nd & Broadway By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com In the last issue of the Gazette we published the views of the Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD) and of the Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association (MKNA) on the zoning request for the old Broadway public library branch at 42nd and Broadway Street. The DMD staff recommended approval and the MKNA recommended denial. For this issue I interviewed Curt Churchman about his project to move Fine Estate Rugs and Gallery Two from Kessler and College to the old library location. Most recently Kaleidescope Youth Center (KYC) was at the location. Churchman had the highest bid for the property that, according to a release from KYC, was offered for purchase by Kaleidoscope to the United Way, Saint Joan of Arc, Lilly Endowment, Nina Pulliam Trust and the MKNA. The current zoning for the building is SU-37 (special use library). The city crafted the original zoning variance language. “We recrafted the language with Meridian-Kessler to get the variance conforming to what their view was, something highly specific to [the art gallery and rug shop] so that it couldn’t be a [grocery store] or something. We told them we would kill the variance [if in the future we leave this location] so it would then revert back to the SU zoning. I told them that as long as we can get liability insurance, we would like to keep the park [/playground] open.” I asked him about traffic. “We’re 10 visitors a day. You couldn’t get much less [traffic].” The hearing is scheduled for 10am at the City-County Building on March 3rd.

Random Ripplings Evoke Arts and Media held a special program at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church, 6185 Guilford Avenue [J5 on map], on February 13, the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Dresden, Germany during WWII. Kurt Vonnegut, who grew up in Indianapolis, wrote Slaughterhouse-five after being a prisoner of war in Dresden. At this event there were readings from Slaughterhousefive, several artists creating art throughout the evening, and a performance by Kilgore Trout (below).
