mario@broadripplegazette.com Washington Township Moose Lodge 2138 is a fraternal organization that organizes various events for kids in need that impact the local community. “There are about 1,500 Moose Lodges across the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Bermuda. There are eight lodges in Central Indiana, including Beech Grove, Greenfield, Greenwood, Indianapolis, Richmond, Shelbyville, Speedway and our location at 5146 Brouse Avenue. We host events for ‘Outside the Box’ (www.outsidethebox.org) which provides services for special needs individuals from their upper teens to adults. We have weekly and monthly events, including live bands, trivia contests, pizza parties and karaoke. Recent events included a Valentine’s Day party and Christmas Talent show. The men and women of the Moose organize different events throughout the year to raise funds for various Moose Charities. We provide Tommy Moose dolls to police and fire departments that are given to kids suffering from traumatic events and we are also involved in various food drive programs. Last year, the Loyal Order of Moose celebrated their 100th anniversary at the annual convention held in Las Vegas,” explained Eric Renner, who is administrator and board member at the Moose Lodge 2138, Chapter 2399. “The Washington Township Lodge is open seven days a week. We have a great bunch of dedicated members that join together for fun and good laughs, all the while remembering we’re supporting a greater mission of kids in need and our senior members. A prayer ceremony occurs every night at 9 p.m. where everybody stands up, bows their head and repeats prayers. People remember what we’re 5146 Brouse Avenue here for – it’s a bit of a reminder to everyone what our cause is,” he noted. (317) 251-4452 “A big group used to have meetings lodge2138.moosepages.org somewhere else before Thanksgiving in 2012. We brought a group together to see the Notre Dame-USC (University of Southern California) football game at the lodge. About 40 of us joined right away and our membership has really grown since then to about 200 individuals,” Renner added. “We revitalized the place, paving the parking lot, painting the lodge, repairing the AV (audio-visual), HVAC (heating ventilation air conditioning), roof and installing a satellite TV system,” said Stan Bright. He is the current governor of the Washington Township Moose Lodge. His father, Dave, was also a member of the Moose Lodge here. Bright retired from Allison Transmission, where he also worked with Delco Electronics and Allison’s Gas Turbine Division. Renner is the National Sales Manager for Sports Select that installs wireless entertainment systems for sports bars and restaurants. Broad Ripple Moose Tracks, (http://lodge2138.moosepages.org) is their bimonthly newsletter that lists their future events and charity work, including a golf outing that sponsors holes to support Special Olympics. Banner Artist of the issue The banner artist for this issue is Pablos Waltitos. Pablos Waltitos is an emerging artist, creating his own blend of pencil, ink and charcoal into his art projects. Since he can remember, he has always had a natural talent for art. High school was the only time when he took formal art classes. His work since then has always been something he does on his own time. Not until a strong push from friends and family to get more involved, he finally returned to his passion. Art, as many know is an expression of creative imagination, ingenuity and love. This has allowed him to find his true connection again which has inspired him to participate more in the art world and evolve the craft to the next level. Most of his art collections are unique, different and will make people think twice. Isn’t that the point? From tweaking corporate logos, to unique designs, to cartooning, art will always be in the life Pablos Waltitos. For more experience with Pablos Waltitos, check him out at www.pabloswaltitos.com. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Broad Ripple Gazette we are featuring a year of local artists by allowing them to interpret our banner, while incorporating the words “The Broad Ripple Gazette”. Contact us at info@broadripplegazette.com to inquire if any open issues remain. Still looking for cartoonist, tattoo artist, pen and ink, etc.

February zoning meeting held at IAC By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com There were two items on the agenda of the February public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee at the Indianapolis Art Center. The meeting was called to order by Chris McElwee. 1) 6181 Carrollton Avenue. Sam Snell, Realtor regarding information before filing for a variance to use this property for a small business with two employees, minimal to no client traffic, and no yard signage. This item was for information only, to see if the BRVA had any questions about the business and its proposed use of the house. The business is not a retail insurance business but an insurance alliance. The plan is to occupy the home for 2-3 years, then revert the zoning back to residential upon relocating. 2) 6163 College Avenue, Bill Woolf, owner of Bill Hair Design regarding the removal of the garage for space to help the maneuverability for parking. This item was a follow-up to a previous zoning variance from many years ago. That variance had a stipulation in it saying that when the garage is to be removed, the BRVA is to be contacted 90 days in advance. The removal of the garage will allow for an additional parking spot or two and improve maneuverability. The next scheduled meeting of the committee is March 24 at 6pm at the Indianapolis Art Center.

This promises to be a fun show! Oakland, California based, Amy X Neuburg, is known her own brand of irreverent genrecrossing music. She is an innovative user of live looping technology, blended with her four-octave vocal range and humorous lyrics. She was one of the earliest performers to work with live looping technology so it makes perfect sense that she’ll be joined by the students of the Music & Arts Technology classes at IUPUI. The class will be performing a new composition by Amy.

The bagpipers are coming, the bagpipers are coming! Bagpipers are part of the Broad Ripple St. Patrick’s Day tradition. Summer programs for girls
It is hard to think about summer right now – as I’m typing as the snow is falling – but sunny weather will eventually come and with that brings some great musical programming for girls. Now is the time to apply.
Girls Rock! Indianapolis
Applications will be available for on-line submission beginning March 9. This year Girls Rock! is offering two camp sessions (identical curriculums). Session 1: Camp Week July 6-10, Showcase July 11 Session 2: Camp Week July 13-17, Showcase July 18 The camp week location and showcase venue are being finalized and will be announced soon. Tuition is $250 per camper. Full and partial scholarships, based on financial need, are available and can be requested during the application process. Girls Rock! Indianapolis is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to building positive self-esteem in girls and encouraging creative expression through music. Our music education programs provide girls with an opportunity to participate in an environment that fosters leadership, encourages social change, and cultivates a supportive community of female peers and mentors. Girls Rock! is also in the middle of a fundraising effort. After five years of providing summer day camps for young women ages 8-16, they are expanding their programming and services to help reach more of the Indianapolis community, including at-risk and under-served girls who might greatly benefit from the after-school and summer camp programs. In order to properly navigate our expansion, they need a home base. The fundraising effort is specifically focused to pay for rent, build-out, and equipment in a new space inside the GC Murphy Building in the Fountain Square neighborhood. The building is already home to a variety of arts community players, and is the perfect place to build a home for Girls Rock! Indianapolis. To apply for a camp session and for more information about their fundraising campaign visit girlsrockindy.org.
D.I.V.A. Summer Songwriting Camp
Camp: June 22 – 26. Auditions will take place on Monday, March 16 at Shortridge Magnet High School and on Monday, March 23 at The Warehouse in Carmel. D.I.V.A. Summer Songwriting Camp (formerly Girls Create Music), has moved its summer camp to Hilbert Circle Theatre. The camp is celebrating its fifth year of inspiring young women (girls age 10 – 16) to be better musicians and confident artists. D.I.V.A. has a wonderful group of Indiana based-musicians – including Andra Faye, Monkia Herzig, and Mina Keohane on facility – and they have invited Nashville-based songwriters, Amy Speace and Ron Browning, to be the camp’s resident songwriting coaches. If you’ve read this column for any amount of time you know that I am a huge Amy Speace fan! Ron and Amy have songwriting credits that partnerships with Grammy winners, residences at a variety of prestigious music festivals, and albums reviewed by Billboard Magazine (and the Broad Ripple Gazette, I might add). Alongside D.I.V.A.’s roster of professional Indiana-based musicians, Browning and Speace will act as songwriting mentors to the campers. In addition, Browning, who has coached Patti LaBelle, Wynonna Judd, and Carrie Underwood, will teach the camp’s vocal master class, and Speace will write an original composition, which the campers will perform at their final performance on June 26 at Hilbert Circle Theatre. New campers may also submit a video audition. The audition involves a short creative demonstration and an interview. Interested campers do not need to have instrumental or vocal experience to audition. D.I.V.A. is able to offer scholarships to those campers who quality. Interested campers must audition before being considered for a scholarship. To apply to D.I.V.A. or for more information about the camp and its scholarships visit www.BeAGoodDiva.com or call (317) 426.8543. -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. It is hard to get a good picture of this structure, but it is very cool and will probably be gone soon. It is a very old little building with a wall of glass. Not sure if it is a chicken coop or a green house. It will be coming down to make way for the recently approved apartment complex at 66th and Ferguson Street [A4 on map].

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

24-hour fundraising cycling event returns to Indianapolis
Registration is now open to join the 2015 ride. 24 Hours of Booty is back in Indianapolis for a fourth year. Registration is now open at http://24hoursofbooty.org. The annual non-competitive bicycling event for people of all ages and abilities will take place at Butler University from Friday, June 26 at 7:00 p.m. to Saturday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m. Funds raised from the event will benefit IU Simon Cancer Center and Livestrong Foundation. The event is anticipated to raise more than $200,000 for cancer survivorship and navigation programs. The route, a 3.5-mile loop, rolls through the charming neighborhoods surrounding Butler University. Riders can ride “The Booty Loop” as much or as little as they want during the 24-hour period. At the heart of the action is “Bootyville,” the event’s headquarters where riders can camp, socialize and enjoy music as they recharge from riding. Along with three catered meals, riders also receive access to snacks, energy bars, water and sports drinks. To participate in the Indianapolis event, each rider is required to pay a $45 registration fee and raise a minimum of $200 prior to the group ride. Participants can register as an individual or as part of a team. In the event’s 13-year history, more than 13,000 riders have raised more than $13 million in select cities. In addition to Indianapolis, 24 Hours of Booty holds cycling events in Charlotte, N.C. and Columbia, Md. and brings in participants from around the country.
Receive Text Messages from the Indy Library!
As the latest innovation to meet current patron demand, text messaging is now available from The Indianapolis Public Library as a way to receive important notices on personal account activity. Four types of messages are available from the Library. Pre-Overdue Notice text messages are sent the day before a Library item becomes due. Overdue Notice text messages are sent seven days after an item becomes overdue (three days for DVDs) and again two weeks after the first overdue text is sent, if the item is still overdue. If an item is not returned after the second text, its cost will be charged to a patron’s account. A Hold Notice text message is sent when a requested item becomes available for pickup. Finally, a General Notice text message may occasionally be sent when the Library needs to contact an individual concerning a specific situation, such as when someone leaves a Library card behind during a recent visit. To sign up for text messaging, patrons should go online at www.indypl.org and select the Text Message Notices tab in My Account. They can then enter their 10-digit, text-enabled phone number and choose which types of texts they wish to receive. They can sign up for up to three text-enabled phones. Changing text messaging preferences is easy by returning to the original tab. Standard text messaging rates may apply, and text messages do not stop other notification methods, such as email and phone notifications patrons may already receive. Text messaging is another example of how the Indy Library is evolving to meet patrons where they are in their lives today, in this case adapting its outreach to accommodate mobile users.

Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith As I sit and write this on Sunday, March 1st, I realize I missed the boat. We just had nearly eight inches of snow dumped on us and I opted not to go to Orlando this week for the biggest pet trade show in the world, Global Pet Expo. I decided to go instead to Las Vegas in July. I know. Why would I do that? It’s not about the weather, it’s not about the venue, it’s about the show itself. Sign me up for Orlando next March. I won’t make the same mistake twice. In the meantime my email box is bursting with invitations to visit vendors at their booths this week. If you don’t know, I own pet supply stores in Broad Ripple and on Mass Ave. This is the first big show of the year and all the manufacturers have something new to show. Our trade magazines and the President of APPA (American Pet Products Association) tell us that this year we will top $58.5 billion dollars in sales. Apparently all of you love your pets! And as this crazy love affair gets bigger and bigger there seems to be no end to the things entrepreneurs conjure up. Veterinarians contribute greatly to that annual figure as do groomers, daycares, dog walkers and dog trainers. It wasn’t that long ago (maybe 10 years) when I realized that there was such a thing as dog day care. I wasn’t in the pet business yet and I was sure people had gone daft. Did people really pay to have someone watch their dogs during the day and was there really something called doggie play dates? Crazy! Not long after, I fully understood. It was either that or have the dog eat the arm off the couch if it was home by itself. If the dog was destructive it became confined to a crate for most of the work day and would attack its “pet parent” when they got home from work, with pent up energy. The other alternative was to have a professional dog walker come daily and use up some of that energy so that by the time it was the end of the day dog and pet parent could chill out together for a quiet evening. I don’t think people realize how much attention dogs need and without these services many folks find they can’t keep a dog and many pets end up in shelters and new homes. So, kudos to those that provide the much needed services. It has become such a big business that there is a national dog sitter’s association that had a conference here in Indianapolis last fall. I was surprised there was such a thing but I talked to a few of them when they wondered in to my downtown store. One was from Hawaii
The Experience and Integrity You Deserve. 6569 Carrollton Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46220 317-466-9702 www.ljiwm.com lji@ljiwm.com
and another from out of the country. They said they learned a lot and thought it was beneficial. Now these day cares and dog sitters/walkers will comfort you during your work day by providing you with selfies of them and the dogs so you can rest assured that Fido is getting the attention promised. But here is something really cool right here in Broad Ripple. I just love this! K9KittyKab. It’s transportation for pets. One day I came in to my store and there was this clever brochure on my counter. I thought it was brilliant. We all know taxis are needed in Broad Ripple but who thought of the idea for pets? Apparently someone did. K9KittyKab is a transportation service and in-home care that will take your pets to their destinations. They will wait with your pet or return later to bring him/her home. For more information on this unique service call 844-k9-Kitty. So if I thought doggie day care was goofy how about this….Cat Cafes. I just can’t quite get this but cats do need their recognition. It can’t be all about dogs. So here’s the scoop. I first read about this in an industry magazine last month featuring a cat café in New York City. It was strange reading. But then this week I read about the concept again and I quote it here…….. Casey Steuart, a San Antonio, Texas, businesswoman, hopes to raise $10,000 through her Indiegogo campaign—enough to open the first cat café in Texas—the San Antonio Cat Café. The idea is to have a place where cat lovers can enjoy a latte in a comfy chair while being serenaded by the purring of the café’s resident cats—brought in from local rescues, according to an online report about the project on mySA. For a small fee, patrons will be able to pet or let one of the café felines curl up in their lap, plus patrons can take selfies with their new furry friends and even take one home through adoption. The café also would double as a one-stop pet shop for all things cat, including offering pet-sitting, premium cat products and a delivery service for cat litter and other items. But with nine days left and only $335 pledged, Steuart is going to need some help if her dream is going to become a reality at least through this initial crowdfunding round. So this is real and it is becoming reality. When you go to Cat Café on the internet you will find one in Melbourne Australia. From their site I quote “Cat Cafe’s are becoming known worldwide, the first opening in Taiwan in 1998, and since spreading to Japan, Vienna, Russia, Germany, China, Thailand, the UK, France, and more! The success of Cat Cafes is due to several reasons, the main one being that cats are awesome. In city centres it can be difficult to rent a flat that allows animals, and owning an animal for its entire life is a big responsibility and costly, therefore Cat Cafes are a great solution to these problems. It has also been proven that interacting with cats can lower high blood pressure, stress, and anxiety.” The only other trendy thing that is a little odd is the new International Association of Pet Fashion Professionals, with offices in Chicago and New York. Really? Pet fashion professionals? I had heard they were doing runway shows in New York. Pets make you smile! Susan Smith is a life-long area resident and is the owner of City Dogs Grocery located at 6055 College and at 884 Massachusetts Avenue. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 1 in the right section of the middle row of the medium puzzle that contains the 6-8-9. The 1 in the center section eliminates the spaces to the left and right of the 8. The 1 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 6. the 1 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 8. The only space left is two spaces to the right of the 9. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

& Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.
Here is the one-hundred fifty-third installment:

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
EGG-cellent Wine Making Earlier this year I had the pleasure of judging the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition in Cloverdale, California. While there I spent time talking with other industry folks to see what is new in the wine world and learned that one of the latest trends is one of the oldest: fermenting in cement tanks. Cement vats shaped like swimming pools or 1930’s ice box style refrigerators have long been used by vintners in Spain, France and South America to ferment grapes into wine. Now US winemakers are jumping on the bandwagon but with their own twist. Cement tanks that are shaped like an egg. “The juice kind of hits the walls and bounces off in different directions so it keeps the cap softer and not as firm so it’s easier to mix and do pump-over which makes the flavors more delicate,” says Hillary Fraser, an independent cellar specialist. She’s helped with vintages across the world including those fermented in egg shaped cement tanks. “The natural yeast in concrete will make wine as similar to the year before as possible,” says Hillary. That helps keep the vintages the same and also creates a note of minerality in the wine, a flavor that US consumers love. While cement adds wanted flavors, it can also cause problems if the tanks aren’t kept sparkling clean. “If the tank gets any type of bacteria like brett or something, concrete is porous so you can’t clean it out efficiently as you can stainless steel”, warns Hillary. The tanks are mostly made in Europe then shipped to the US which can be expensive. But once in place, Hillary says the vat can last forever, just like a favorite cooking utensil. “You don’t really clean clean them, because you want whatever is in the concrete to put those same flavors in your next vintage. So to keep those notes you treat the tank like a cast iron pan. You never truly clean a cast iron pan because whatever you cook last will give it flavor for what goes in next”. Here are a few wineries that use the egg shaped concrete tanks that have wines available in Indiana: Michel Chapoutier, France, Archery Summit, Oregon, Quintessa, California, Viader Vineyards & Winery, California.

Cheaters Hall of Shame Rosie Ruiz: This one came to mind first because I remember my father mentioning it as a joke several times when I was a child. In 1980 Ruiz crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon in first place. Turns out however, during the race Rosie hopped off of the course, got on the subway and ran the last mile of the race to finish first. It actually took several days for the truth to come out. What a gutsy stunt! Tonya Harding: Talk about “break a leg!” Tonya had her then boyfriend club Nancy Kerrigan in the knee in an attempt to take her out of Olympic contention. After being busted (pardon the pun) she was banned from competition. Danny Almonte: This one has been dubbed the “Age-gate Conspiracy.” In 2001 Almonte was known as a child prodigy pitcher at an apparent 12 years of age. However, turns out his coach (and obviously with his parents on board) falsified his birth certificate. He was actually 14 and playing with puberty on his side. What a great lesson for kids! 2000 Spanish Paralympics Team: After winning the gold medal that year, it was revealed that only 2 of the twelve members actually had an intellectual disability. Wow. This is about as narcissistic as it gets! Tim Donaghy: The former NBA referee intentionally blew or made incorrect calls from 2005-07 in order to win bets on the point spread of games. Greed doesn’t only affect players and coaches apparently. Diego Maradona: This Argentinian soccer player “scored” possibly the most controversial goal ever at the 1986 World Cup. It looked as though Maradona went up for a header but he actually slapped the ball into the net with his left hand. He was quoted saying it was the “Hand of God” (um, more like the hand of Diego) to put the ball into the goal. The point was still considered “good” and they sadly went on to win the World Cup. Mike Tyson: What a class act…After losing to Evander Holyfield several times before, during one certain fight Tyson realized he once again was outmatched. So naturally, he decided to bite off a chunk of his ear and spit it out. The fight was called off. Therefore considering it a “not win/lose” situation. Pretty cowardly (narcissistic). Marion Jones, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Lance Armstrong, Mark McGuire, ETC!: Hundreds if not thousands of athletes have been found guilty of using performance enhancing drugs/doping to get an edge over their competition. So much that, it is hard to know anymore what is in fact “real” when someone excels at a sport. Sadly the bad scientists seem to always be a bit ahead of the good scientists and I have a feeling that $$ may just play a factor in this. What is astonishing is the ability to lie about doing it for years and years to the public’s faces. 1919 White Sox Scandal: The White Sox, as obvious front runner, threw the World Series and lost to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for money from gamblers. Eight players were banned for life from baseball. Wow that must have been worth it. I’m sure it’s awesome for their families to be infamously known for their grandfathers to have been involved in this one. Probably enough examples of countless. Moral of the story is: Don’t cheat; you are and look like a jerk… earn it the “old fashioned” way HONESTLY! Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Fame > Shame? All of recent activity surrounding the year’s Super Bowl and Deflate-gate scandal has gotten me thinking. As long as there has been the act of sport (pretty much since the dawn of time), unfortunately has also been vast amounts of unsportmanship and cheating. I feel that cheating in sports is one of the most narcissistic behaviors possible. You see, if I looked over my more scholarly classmate’s shoulder during a test for a couple of answers (which I do not condone of course), I am trying to get away with something dishonest which could also have repercussions. I may “succeed” in my cheating but the only person I may be harming ultimately is myself. Sure I am disrespecting the person I am cheating from, but likely it won’t affect his or her grade. BUT, when you cheat in a sport to better yourself and become the proclaimed WINNER, the person/people that did not cheat and possibly could have earned that win honestly and fairly have now become the “losers”. And this is why it is so narcissistic; not only are you cheating to claim your own victory but, more importantly, you are taking away another’s success and that is the definition of egotistical to say the least. Do I think the Colts would have won with perfectly inflated footballs? Not even close, and that is why it is even more absurd. And when you cheat and win…does it really feel that rewarding?? Before I may land myself in hot water with some of you….I would like to have fun with this column and remind you of some famous cheaters in sports history; and mind you these are the ones who GOT CAUGHT! **One more tiny side note: Do you think if Luck and Pagano pulled the exact same thing on the Patriots and went on to win that game that Indy would be sitting with a Vince Lombardi trophy? HMMMM…

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter A Perplexing Color Here comes St. Patrick’s Day. There’s lots to like about it: the chance to celebrate any bit of Irish blood that may have flowed through the family tree, a fun time for a parade or other revelry, and of course getting decked out in green. I have to dig really deep in my closet for something green to wear because my wardrobe is pretty much green-free. Truth be known, I have been green-challenged for years. As an artist who paints, I should have befriended it in my childhood watercolor box. As fate would have it when I began to paint professionally, I ignored the color. I had only one tube of green paint and one bottle of green ink in my supplies. My green pencils were always the longest and sharpest. The same had been true of my crayons. I do not like green nor do I understand green. To me it looks different when rendered in paintings than in the real landscape. It’s illusive; I can’t seem to capture it and long ago gave up trying. I’m resigned to steering clear of green in my house decor, my wardrobe, and everyday choices. There’s precious little green in my artwork or other things I make. Strangely enough, observing green in my yard is a whole other matter. It’s light and sometimes somewhat yellowish in spring. As poet Robert Frost said so well, “Nature’s first green is gold.” As summer progresses the trees and shrubs change to a deep bright, leathery green. This green is strong and lush, becoming a hue that seems to say, “I will be here forever.” Sun makes nature’s green change shades as its position in the sky shifts. Green can look quite vibrant in the morning and quite dull in the evening. The greens of autumn are drab, olive, and dry looking, even when rain washes the fall landscape. Very few colors affect me the way green does. It is complex and confounding—a color to observe rather than engage. I sometimes wonder if animals and birds see changes in greens the way humans do. I guess they don’t have to understand green because they live amidst the chameleon-like color. For them, it just is. So on the green’s heyday, St. Patrick’s Day, take note of all that passes for green in the name of celebrating Irish spirit. As we color everything from beer to fountains and rivers, it will be merriment rather than the color’s ephemeral nature that’s important. I’ll do my best to rustle up at least of spot of green to wear and join the revelry that comes but once a year.
