Midtown Christ Community Church By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com Midtown Christ Community Church lead pastor Corey Smith discussed his calling. “I became a Christian my freshman year of college and that set me on a trajectory of spiritual growth. I had a passion for people to know Christ personally and really to experience what I experienced not being a Christian and knowing that Christ is more fulfilling and satisfying than things in the world that I thought were. I took Bible studies in my dorm and fraternity in college. I enjoyed that and saw that it had an impact on people. After graduation, I went on staff with a ministry called Campus Outreach and started one at Midtown Christ Community Church Arkansas State University. 5610 Broadway Street [MM21 on map] That experience gave me more vision for ministry and www.cccmidtown.org tested my gifts, talking to and reaching more people in going from Non-Christian to Christian and reaching them spiritually. It was affirming, that became a path in that I had gifts, calling to the pastoral ministry. I never wanted to be a pastor or evangelize when I became a Christian at 19. Growing in my faith personally and getting to know of Jesus Christ and the mission, I just wanted people to know the liberating and satisfying message of Christianity,” he explained. As he responded to that call, it led him down a path. “My experience at Arkansas State led me to Indiana where I started (in 2003) a Campus Outreach at Indiana

The Indianapolis native is a proud alumna of Shortridge High School. She attended The Glasgow School of Art and in 1972 received her B.A. from Indiana University in Printmaking and Painting. For over ten years I have endeavored to create new concepts each and every year reflecting the aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts movement. State University. It was another reaffirmation. At ISU, my burden began to grow and I saw a need for a gospel-centered church and gospel-centered preaching whose mission is evangelization discipleship. After ISU, I went to Convent Seminary in St. Louis. When I was on staff at Campus Outreach at ISU, I was employed by a church in Carmel called Christ Community Church (4770 E. Main Street) and there was my authority that connected me to Indianapolis. I built a relationship with Tim Kirk, their pastor, when I went to ministry. We began to dream and think for the future as we saw a need and planted a church here (at 5610 Broadway) in August of 2010. (Their Sunday services are at 10:30 a.m.) The Campus Outreach ministry at IUPUI was growing and flourishing and many students went traveling from downtown to Carmel. We met for about a year in Carmel as a separate service preparing to launch down here as an incubating period,” Smith mentioned. “Our mission statement is ‘Building a gospel-centered movement through missional discipleship resulting in personal conversion, authentic community and cultural renewal which reminds me of living in community and doing life together, sharing our lives, victories and challenges, walking together as a family.’ We talk about that quite a bit. Our church is a family like a body of Christ. We share each other’s pains and victories in seeing people live that out which is one of the implications of the gospel. It compels you to walk with people to share in their joys and struggles. To see people flourishing in that way is rewarding. To that community point, Acts 2:42-47, photo by Mario Morone being constructed by the word of God and Lead pastor Corey Smith of Midtown living life together is pretty rewarding,” Christ Community Church. he noted. Smith reflected on the rewarding aspects of his vocation: “One is seeing conversion to Christianity and just seeing people who are searching for an answer. They see voids in their lives and turn to many things, but are left wanting. Here, Christ can see their needs and their lives change and they experience a deeper peace and more fulfillment in finding a deeper purpose in life that is especially gratifying. The second thing is not just seeing Christians walk with God, but continuing to make steps in deepening their faith. It’s gratifying to see people continuing to walk with God. It’s not a one-time event, but throughout years of experiences and challenges, they see what John 10:10 said, ‘The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy’, but Jesus said, ‘I have come that they may have life.’ ” He witnessed a miracle firsthand. “The first year (in 2010) that we planted the church, we had a young couple who had twin girls and a few months later, one of them developed brain cancer. As a young church, we didn’t know how to do suffering or what to say or do, but we did our best. We met together to pray and had a 24-hour prayer chain. Some of the single women in our church were at their house constantly and helped the mom take care of her kids. They kind of stayed with them and lived with them. The child survived the cancer. The church was critical. God really provided for our church in that time,” he recalled. “A majority of our church members are in their 20s. We have a lot of college students, but we also have parishioners in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Most of our church is made up of people who did not grow up in a Christian home and who converted later in life as teenagers and young adults. That makes for an interesting culture. We aren’t dealing, for the most part, with church people. I grew up going to church, but not really in church. I didn’t go to vacation Bible school. It wasn’t a huge part of my life. It was something that I did on Sunday for a few hours, but it didn’t have a lot of impact. There is a zeal from our people who want to know the Lord and study his word and seek our leadership and fellowship. There is a unique energy that comes with a young faith in knowing the Lord and making an impact in our city and in our world,” Smith emphasized. Midtown Christ Community Church teachings and influence extend beyond our local community. “We have young missionaries that we support in South Africa and China that is part of the gospel, building a mission-centered movement. We’re not just focused on our church duty, but want to make an impact in the city and world and support missionaries for those in their 20s. We partner with Dream Alive. It’s an organization that helps inner-city kids with urban needs. We partner with them because we want to be part of the social renewal within our city. We have a large portion of our church who are invested. We want to contribute people resources. Our ministry philosophy is built on relationships. The point we’re trying to make is to have an impact on a life-on-life relationship connection to people. The people come to Christ in our church. We rely on relationships and build friendships with people, like in 2 Thessalonians 7-8 where Paul said, ‘We’re being desirous in sharing the gospel with you. Love God and love people,’ ” Smith concluded. Future events on their church calendar include Good Friday and Easter services. More information is available at their website, www.cccmidtown.org. If you’re seeking new hope and new faith this Lenten season, lead pastor Corey Smith can help you walk that path he has taken at Midtown Christ Community Church on any given Sunday.

NUVO Newsweekly is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a big bash at the Old National Centre – and I’m pretty sure the dance floor will be bigger than the original NUVO offices in Broad Ripple. The first issue was published on March 25, 1990 and Indiana’s largest independent alternative news organization (I’m sure the Broad Ripple Gazette is a close second) will be celebrating in style. They will host Indy’s hottest local DJs: Action Jackson, Kyle Long, Indiana Jones, Gabby Love, TopSpeed, Cool Hand Lex and MetroGnome from 8 p.m.-Midnight in Deluxe/Deco. In addition to the music you can sample NUVO’s 25th Anniversary Cocktail Contest winner, complimentary food from local eateries (including Broad Ripple favorites Just Pop-In and Yat’s), and a special edition 25th Anniversary Sun King Beer.

Seth Walker with Kevin Anker Wednesday, April 1 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave 21+, $15, 6 – 9 PM
No foolin’, this will be a great show. I caught Seth Walker’s show the last time he was in town and it was grand. Seth’s sound is based in roots music with liberal dashes of blues and jazz folded in. His music is infectious and I found myself bopping my head along to the music. He’ll be joined by Indianapolis’ own Kevin Anker. Plan on having dinner at the Jazz Kitchen while you’re there – you won’t be sorry!

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Indianapolis kindergarten teacher Dawn Hammon named applications being accepted in Marion County 2015 National Project Learning Tree Outstanding Educator Preschool Marion County families may now submit applications for preschool education grants for the Dawn Hammon, kindergarten teacher at Center for Inquiry School #84 in Indianapolis, was selected from nominees across the U.S. as one of five Outstanding Educators by Project Learning Tree® (PLT), the national environmental education program of the American Forest Foundation. This is the third time an educator from Indiana has won the National PLT Outstanding Educator Award since its inception in 1994. Hammon has taught at several public schools in Indianapolis, most recently at Cold Spring Environmental Magnet School, before she joined Center for Inquiry last year. She uses PLT activities to spark interest in the environment in young urban students through outdoor and classroom projects. Her students have started school gardens and composting projects, and even planted native vegetation to contain surface runoff from a parking lot. She works with community groups to organize outdoor science days for the entire school, and develops programs to involve parents in learning about environmental topics with their children. Within weeks of starting her new position, she created a Junior Naturalist Club for students in grades K through 2. In addition to her classroom duties, Hammon is the lead science trainer to kindergarten teachers in the Indianapolis Public School System. “Dawn spends evenings, weekends, and summers helping other teachers become comfortable with science and how to bring the environment into their classrooms,” said Amy Hach, a teacher at Cold Spring. Hammon graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Ball State University with further training at Indiana University, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, and Indiana Wesleyan University. She will be honored at PLT’s 29th International Coordinators’ Conference, scheduled for June 8-11 in Saratoga Springs, New York. She is also invited to attend the World Forestry Center’s International Educators’ Institute to be held July 12-18 in Portland, Oregon. Town of Rocky Ripple meeting - levee issues By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com It was standing room only at the March 10 Town Council meeting for the Town of Rocky Ripple at 930 W 54th Street. Mike Massonne, levee project manager for the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, explained the status of the levee wall project. Massonne said that the Army Corps of Engineers selected the Westfield alignment of the levee wall, but the City of Indianapolis stopped this project in favor of the west bank alignment. The Department of Public Works is conducting a feasibility study the west bank alignment. This includes surveying and taking boring samples along the west bank of the canal in the yards of residents of the Town of Rocky Ripple. It is expected to be completed in August. The boring depths are between 30 to 60 feet. If the feasibility study shows that the west canal bank will support a levee wall, then Corps headquarters would first need to authorize the Corps to start
the locally-preferred project (the west bank alignment) over the Corps-preferred project (the Westfield alignment). Then the Corps would negotiate a contract with the City of Indianapolis for the project. The City of Indianapolis would pay the project costs over and above the Westfield alignment costs. If that plan progresses, it has been stated that as many as 26 homes in the Town of Rocky Ripple along the west bank of the canal could be removed for the construction of the levee designed to protect the City of Indianapolis. A question was then asked, “Locally-preferred. Are we saying the City (of Indianapolis) prefers the wall to be on the Rocky Ripple side? Because Rocky Ripple doesn’t prefer it to be on our side.” This question was not answered. It was stated later in the meeting that the City of Indianapolis and Citizens Water prefer the west bank alignment because it protects the canal. Another answered question was, “Since we are an incorporated town, and we are not going to give up voluntarily, how can the City of Indianapolis take (someone’s property) that is not in the City of Indianapolis? We (Rocky Ripple) are not Indianapolis.” Another question was, “The Army Corps says they recommend putting the levee on the east side of the canal, and the City (of Indianapolis) said, ‘no, we want to put it on the west side’, which is the side that affects Rocky Ripple. Why does the City think the solution is better to bulldoze 44 houses in Rocky Ripple than to put the wall on the other side?” Massonne answered, “It was 20 or fewer (homes to be removed) along the canal. That is why we want to complete the analysis to determine what kind of (levee) structure could be built there and what (Rocky Ripple) properties would be affected.” Massonne added that the city is concerned about the gates across the canal, and therefore city water supply, and that is why they want the west bank alignment. Butler University’s Ben Hunter, Chief of Staff and Executive Director of Public Safety Office of the President, spoke to the residents. Hunter stated that the Butler board of trustees voted against the Westfield alignment. The west bank alignment was not an option in 2010 when the board of trustees made that declaration. The board of trustees (26 unanimous votes) stated that “we wanted an option to save Rocky Ripple. Right now that still stands.” The only levee alignment to “save Rocky Ripple” is to put the wall along the White River and not along either side of the canal. This alignment has been rejected by the Corps and by the City of Indianapolis due to the cost. This is a very complicated issue. So much so that very little was resolved at this March 10 meeting. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the right section of the top row of the easy puzzle that contains the 1-6-9. The 7 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 6. The 7 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The 7 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces above the 6. The only space left is to the right of the 1. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
Sip your way into Spring Spring forward and fill your glass with some easy to find, affordable wines that I have sampled over the past few months as my travels took me between the frigid midwest and the warm west coast. All under $15 and many “screw cap” for ease in opening and closing. Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand–dry and fresh white; not as zippy and tangy as most NZ SB’s but offers soft hints of pink grapefruit and peach for less than $6. Clos du Bois UNOAKED Chardonnay, California–harder to find but worth the look; pure fruit with no oak; a delicious dry white with notes of apples and pears. Estancia UNOAKED Chardonnay, California–Another delicious drink of white wine; for those who don’t like oaky, fruit bombs, this is another wine to seek, find and savor. Charles and Charles Rose, Columbia Valley, WA–DRY pink wine; lovely nose of cherries and strawberries with clean, crisp mineral finish. Lovely with Easter ham or lamb. Cherry Tart Pinot Noir, Sonoma County, California–Dry, smooth, fresh red wine with expressive notes of red fruit. Perfect red wine to drink on the patio as evening light lingers. Apothic Crush, California–Limited release blend of Petite Syrah and Pinot Noir; not for the faint of heart as this is full on flavor. Dry, bold, smooth with inviting aromas of toffee and mocha, followed by lush black fruit flavors. WOW and under $15. Fire up the grill! Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Jill and doggyboy Harp live in Warfleigh, where she also consults and teaches in an effort to keep the doggyboy’s treat jar filled with biscuits and her freezer stocked with ice cream. D-Day Veteran’s Lost Dog Tag found 70 years after WW II Battle of Normandy by Eunice Trotter
Random Ripplings
There has been a lot of underground activity of the construction site just north of Ambrosia Restaurant at Kessler and College. A bank and office building is being built there.
The children of James W. Wallace had heard stories of their father fighting at the Battle of Normandy during WW II. Now they have a keepsake of his service. Their father’s dog tag was recently found near Utah Beach in Normandy, France and was be returned to the Wallace family during a presentation to his widow, Catherine S. Wallace, a resident of American Village. The presentation was held at American Village, 2026 East 54th Street. Mr. Wallace died in 1997. After serving his country he returned to Indianapolis to serve his community. He retired from the Indianapolis Fire Department as a fireman. The dog tag was found by Frenchman Francois Blaizot of Brucheville, France who discovered the tag while treasure hunting near Utah Beach last summer. Utah Beach was one of five beach sites where the Battle of Normandy fighting took place from June 6, 1944 to July 24, 1944. Thousands of U.S. soldiers were killed or injured during the battle. Mr. Wallace was one of the 160,000 Allied troops who landed along the 50-mile stretch to fight Nazi Germany. The battle resulted in the liberation of Paris and allowed Allied forces to slog across Europe to defeat Adolph Hitler’s troops. Blaizot spent the following months trying to return the dog tag to officials in America. Friends connected him to Chuck Hodge, a Dallas, Texas man who writes about WWII veterans. Hodge was in Normandy when he learned about the tag. After returning to the U.S., Hodge, whose wife is a native of Indiana, contacted local veteran officials after learning Wallace was from Indiana. He was referred to the Grant County Veterans Affairs Office where officials were especially interested in returning the tag to the family. Grant County Veterans Affairs Officer Bob Kelley assigned the task of locating the family to Marine veteran Cory Goodwin, a volunteer with the Veterans Affairs Office. Goodwin located the Wallace family. “It’s been a crazy story,” said Goodwin. It’s so awesome and we’re so glad we can give this back to the family.”

I saw a very interesting study the other day. As intriguing as it was, it didn’t and shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, really. Most of us these days participate in some form of social media, be it Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. In doing so we keep up with the lives of hundreds. We see their vacation and family photos, hear about job promotions, “remember” their birthdays, and strangely enough see what they are eating . I am sure this all seems pretty obvious to you. And, if you regularly visit social media you probably also notice the patterns of posts coming from certain people. I have definitely noticed that some individuals consistently post uplifting and positive quotes, photos, etc. And others, unfortunately, rarely have anything but negative and angry comments about just about everything under the sun. If you find that many of your friends behave a large like the latter, not only can it dampen your day, it could actually be hurting your health. “What?!” you say… I will explain. The findings of a study coming from the University of Pennsylvania determined this correlation. The results showed that the nature of Twitter posts in certain regions can be a strong predictor of the community’s psychological well-being and can predict rates of heart disease. The research team explains that psychological factors, such as anxiety, stress, and depression are known risk factors for heart disease, but in addition, the expression of negative emotion portrayed either through speaking or writing can also trigger social behaviors that can lead to heart disease such as poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and substance abuse. The study was conducted by analyzing the language used in tweets from 1,300 counties in the US between 2009 and 2010 and used that data to create a map with counties ranging from positive overall tweets (colored in green) and continued along the spectrum to negative overall tweets (red). Then juxtaposed next to this map is another with the same counties indicating heart disease deaths. Low rates in green (with eight shades in between) and high rates in red. The similarity is astounding! Please look it up and see for yourself at medicalnewstoday.com. This leads one to believe that the grumpy and cranky people die younger than their Pollyanna counterpart. Seems to make sense. However according to the study’s co-author Hansen Andrew Schwartz, “The relationship between language and mortality is particularly surprising since the people tweeting angry words and topics are in general not the ones dying of heart disease. But that means that if many of your neighbors are angry, you are more likely to die of heart disease.” INTERESTING. So this obviously infers that those exposed to the negative comments have a higher risk of health risks than those spewing them. A final point that the study mentioned is that Twitter can be useful for identifying the drivers behind negative comments by region which could help inform public health interventions. What I primarily took away from this study is that it is important to pay attention to the energy that you put out to the world. Being negative definitely doesn’t affect just yourself but all of those around you. When I am having a bad day, for whatever reason, I am happy to get back to work. No one wants to listen to a cranky trainer. So, I snap out of it at least for that period of time, and it almost always makes me feel better or forget my silly problems altogether. And knowing that MY mood can improve or hinder someone’s actual health will certainly reinforce to have a positive attitude around others. Last point to think about: When some have a bad day especially due to someone’s negativity, they can’t wait to get home and have a drink or maybe a gallon of ice cream to “escape”. Conversely, when some have a great day especially due to someone’s positivity, they may enjoy a workout class, a walk, or a fabulous healthy meal. The former, if habitual, can cause harm and the latter obviously can improve health. So, perk up and leave the grumpy alone! Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. In the last 10 years of serving the Broad Ripple area, lots of people have come into Backyard Birds. Most come to the store to buy bird food, bird houses, and bird baths. Many have a story to share. Those yarns are probably the best part of working in the store. Stories range from “wild kingdom” tragedies about wildlife in people’s backyards to accounts of great moments like owls hatching their young, pairs of pileated woodpeckers, or lost and found birds. The conversations are peppered with reports about pesky squirrels and chipmunks. People especially enjoy telling jokes that cause a smile or chuckle. Some of these are so good that I just have to pass them along. So here goes:

Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple Presents Awards
Q: Why did the little bird get in trouble at school? A: Because he was caught tweeting on a test.
On March 4, The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple presented Carmel resident Dick Bennett with the Sertoman of the Year award for his outstanding service and contributions to the club. In addition the club also honored James McClelland, CEO of Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana, with the Service to Mankind award and presented him with a $2,000 check for Goodwill Industries. “Dick joined our club in 2000 with Dick Lanham as his sponsor. He leads a Program Committee, and has for many years, that gives us excellent speakers each week—at no cost. He himself spends countless hours to obtain speakers that will be of interest to us, and Dick is not afraid to go after the special, unique, well-known people from all walks of life. Not only not afraid, but we believe he readily cherishes the opportunity and duty to do so! The programs that we have are one of our top draws and they continue this way year after year.” “Dick deals blackjack at many of our casino parties and has been doing so over the past nearly 15 years. He plays a pretty consistent game of golf at the monthly club outings.” Dick graduated from IU in 1954 where he had played tennis on the varsity team. He married Joan the very next month, and now has been married over 60 years. Joan and Dick have three children, 10 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He has mentored 3th- / 4th-graders for many years as well as high school seniors. He was honored as a Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Frank O’Bannon in 2000. The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple is proud to have Dick Bennett as Sertoman of the Year! James (Jim) McClelland has devoted nearly all of his professional life to leadership roles with Goodwill Industries--improving the lives of thousands of folks across 29 counties in central Indiana. His organization brings hope to people by providing them opportunities, not simply handouts. Those opportunities and encouragement foster self-respect and personal responsibility. Establishment of recent creative programs has included Metropolitan High School, Excel Centers to provide adults the chance to earn a high school diploma, and Nurse-Family Partnership, which provides support to first-time mothers in low income households. “Goodwill Industries has grown tremendously. The catalyst was the leadership of a person with a clear vision and who inspires innovation and humanitarianism-who is able to create a culture that supports and encourages people. Jim McClelland is that person, and is our Service to Mankind winner!”

Q: What do you get when you cross a rooster with a vegetable? A: Chick peas Q: Why does a chicken coop have only two doors? A: If it had 4 it would be a sedan! From nerdbirder.com there is a discussion about “Why the Chicken Crossed the Road” by world philosophers, writers, and famous people Just a few: Plato: For the greater good; Robert Frost: To cross the road less traveled; Aristotle: To fulfill its nature on the other side; Sir Edmund Hillary: Because it was there; Mark Twain: The news of its crossing has been greatly exaggerated.
