mario@broadripplegazette.com Midtown Christ Community Church lead pastor Corey Smith discussed his calling. “I became a Christian my freshman year of college and that set me on a trajectory of spiritual growth. I had a passion for people to know Christ personally and really to experience what I experienced not being a Christian and knowing that Christ is more fulfilling and satisfying than things in the world that I thought were. I took Bible studies in my dorm and fraternity in college. I enjoyed that and saw that it had an impact on people. After graduation, I went on staff with a ministry called Campus Outreach and started one at Midtown Christ Community Church Arkansas State University. 5610 Broadway Street [MM21 on map] That experience gave me more vision for ministry and www.cccmidtown.org tested my gifts, talking to and reaching more people in going from Non-Christian to Christian and reaching them spiritually. It was affirming, that became a path in that I had gifts, calling to the pastoral ministry. I never wanted to be a pastor or evangelize when I became a Christian at 19. Growing in my faith personally and getting to know of Jesus Christ and the mission, I just wanted people to know the liberating and satisfying message of Christianity,” he explained. As he responded to that call, it led him down a path. “My experience at Arkansas State led me to Indiana where I started (in 2003) a Campus Outreach at Indiana

Banner Artist of the issue Kitty Drybrough Shepherd is the banner artist in this issue. Kitty is a freelance graphic designer who works from her studio on Lake Maxinhall. The Indianapolis native is a proud alumna of Shortridge High School. She attended The Glasgow School of Art and in 1972 received her B.A. from Indiana University in Printmaking and Painting. From working for the original Indianapolis Home and Garden Magazine (now Indianapolis Monthly), the Gibson Group, The Fashion Mall, and the IU Medical Center, Kitty found plenty of clients to start up her own business. One thing led to another, and Kitty’s logo won the competition for the inaugural Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour project in 2005, and it just took off. “The home tour materials have been my passion! For over ten years I have endeavored to create new concepts each and every year reflecting the aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts movement. State University. It was another reaffirmation. At ISU, my burden began to grow and I saw a need for a gospel-centered church and gospel-centered preaching whose mission is evangelization discipleship. After ISU, I went to Convent Seminary in St. Louis. When I was on staff at Campus Outreach at ISU, I was employed by a church in Carmel called Christ Community Church (4770 E. Main Street) and there was my authority that connected me to Indianapolis. I built a relationship with Tim Kirk, their pastor, when I went to ministry. We began to dream and think for the future as we saw a need and planted a church here (at 5610 Broadway) in August of 2010. (Their Sunday services are at 10:30 a.m.) The Campus Outreach ministry at IUPUI was growing and flourishing and many students went traveling from downtown to Carmel. We met for about a year in Carmel as a separate service preparing to launch down here as an incubating period,” Smith mentioned. “Our mission statement is ‘Building a gospel-centered movement through missional discipleship resulting in personal conversion, authentic community and cultural renewal which reminds me of living in community and doing life together, sharing our lives, victories and challenges, walking together as a family.’ We talk about that quite a bit. Our church is a family like a body of Christ. We share each other’s pains and victories in seeing people live that out which is one of the implications of the gospel. It compels you to walk with people to share in their joys and struggles. To see people flourishing in that way is rewarding. Smith reflected on the rewarding aspects of his vocation: “One is seeing conversion to Christianity and just seeing people who are searching for an answer. They see voids in their lives and turn to many things, but are left wanting. Here, Christ can see their needs and their lives change and they experience a deeper peace and more fulfillment in finding a deeper purpose in life that is especially gratifying. The second thing is not just seeing Christians walk with God, but continuing to make steps in deepening their faith. It’s gratifying to see people continuing to walk with God. It’s not a one-time event, but throughout years of experiences and challenges, they see what John 10:10 said, ‘The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy’, but Jesus said, ‘I have come that they may have life.’ ” He witnessed a miracle firsthand. “The first year (in 2010) that we planted the church, we had a young couple who had twin girls and a few months later, one of them developed brain cancer. As a young church, we didn’t know how to do suffering or what to say or do, but we did our best. We met together to pray and had a 24-hour prayer chain. Some of the single women in our church were at their house constantly and helped the mom take care of her kids. They kind of stayed with them and lived with them. The child survived the cancer. The church was critical. God really provided for our church in that time,” he recalled. “A majority of our church members are in their 20s. We have a lot of college students, but we also have parishioners in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Most of our church is made up of people who did not grow up in a Christian home and who converted later in life as teenagers and young adults. That makes for an interesting culture. We aren’t dealing, for the most part, with church people. I grew up going to church, but not really in church. I didn’t go to vacation Bible school. It wasn’t a huge part of my life. It was something that I did on Sunday for a few hours, but it didn’t have a lot of impact. There is a zeal from our people who want to know the Lord and study his word and seek our leadership and fellowship. There is a unique energy that comes with a young faith in knowing the Lord and making an impact in our city and in our world,” Smith emphasized. Midtown Christ Community Church teachings and influence extend beyond our local community. “We have young missionaries that we support in South Africa and China that is part of the gospel, building a mission-centered movement. We’re not just focused on our church duty, but want to make an impact in the city and world and support missionaries for those in their 20s. We partner with Dream Alive. It’s an organization that helps inner-city kids with urban needs. We partner with them because we want to be part of the social renewal within our city. We have a large portion of our church who are invested. We want to contribute people resources. Our ministry philosophy is built on relationships. The point we’re trying to make is to have an impact on a life-on-life relationship connection to people. The people come to Christ in our church. We rely on relationships and build friendships with people, like in 2 Thessalonians 7-8 where Paul said, ‘We’re being desirous in sharing the gospel with you. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the right section of the top row of the easy puzzle that contains the 1-6-9. The 7 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 6. & Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

Sections 15 - 20 of the ordinance for the traction company

AN ORDINANCE granting to INDIANAPOLIS NORTHERN TRACTION COMPANY, its successors and assigns, authority to construct, maintain an operate an interurban street railroad over, upon and along certain streets of the Town of Broad Ripple, in the County of Marion, and State of Indiana... Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, whenever it becomes necessary, shall be required to take up and relay any portion of its said track for the purpose of putting in, taking up or repairing any street, sewer, water or gas pipes or service connections, and the same shall not be required to be done at the expense of Grantee, its successors or assigns, but shall be done by it upon reasonable notice and demand therefor, and the reasonable and actual cost of the same shall be paid to it in such a way as said town may provide. SECTION 15. Nothing contained in this ordinance shall be construed so as to take away from the Board of Trustees of said town the exclusive power now exercised over the streets, highways, avenues and bridges with its corporate limits. SECTION 16. The care of said Grantee doing a local business in said town shall be run in accordance with the following rules and regulations: (1) Such cars may be run at a rate of twelve (12) miles per hour in the business portion, and twenty (20) miles in the residence portion of said town. (2) No such cars shall be stopped on any cross-walk or in front of any intersecting street, except to avoid collision or damage or injury to persons or to property, or to take on or let off passengers, and in taking on or letting off passengers at such points, cars shall be stopped at the cross-walk on the far side of the street, so as not to impede travel on any such cross-walk or street more than necessary, but said cars may stop at any point between two intersecting streets. (3) Conductors and employes of Grantee in charge of cars shall use care and diligence to prevent injury to persons or property. (4) Proper care shall be used by those in charge of cars and motors to prevent injury to teams, carriages, buggies, wagons and other vehicles. (5) In case of fire, the cars shall be stopped when so ordered by the Town Marshal, or any Policeman, or the Chief of the Fire Department. (6) Said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall provide headlights and keep them lighted after dark on all cars operated by electricity, and shall give signal by sounding a gong or whistle whenever overtaking any person or vehicle crossing, walking or driving on said railway companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tracks.

If at any time said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall build its track upon any street or part of street upon any other that the established grade of such street or part of street, then whenever said town shall cause said street or part of street to be improved to the established grade, the Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall be required, at its own expense, to change its said track so as to conform to the established grade of said street or part of street. SECTION 18. As a condition to the vesting of the rights and privileges granted by this ordinance, said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall, within sixty (60) days after the passage of this ordinance, file with the Town Clerk of Broad Ripple a written acceptance of the provisions of this ordinance. SECTION 19. As a consideration for the granting of this ordinance, said Grantee, its successors or assigns, shall construct and complete said line of railroad through said town on or before the first day of July, 1904, and should said line of street railroad not be completed on or before July 1, 1904, as aforesaid, then all rights and privileges and franchises hereby granted shall lapse, and said Board of Trustees of said town shall have the right thereafter to declare the ordinance null and void and all rights thereunder terminated. SECTION 20. Whereas, an emergency exists, this ordinance shall be in force from, and after its passage. ORDAINED AND ESTABLISHED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE TOWN OF BROAD RIPPLE, MARION COUNTY, INDIANA, THIS 3rd DAY OF APRIL 1903.

There has been a lot of underground activity of the construction site just north of Ambrosia Restaurant at Kessler and College. A bank and office building is being built there.

The children of James W. Wallace had heard stories of their father fighting at the Battle of Normandy during WW II. Now they have a keepsake of his service. Their father’s dog tag was recently found near Utah Beach in Normandy, France and was be returned to the Wallace family during a presentation to his widow, Catherine S. Wallace, a resident of American Village. The presentation was held at American Village, 2026 East 54th Street. Mr. Wallace died in 1997. After serving his country he returned to Indianapolis to serve his community. He retired from the Indianapolis Fire Department as a fireman. The dog tag was found by Frenchman Francois Blaizot of Brucheville, France who discovered the tag while treasure hunting near Utah Beach last summer. Utah Beach was one of five beach sites where the Battle of Normandy fighting took place from June 6, 1944 to July 24, 1944. Thousands of U.S. soldiers were killed or injured during the battle. Mr. Wallace was one of the 160,000 Allied troops who landed along the 50-mile stretch to fight Nazi Germany. The battle resulted in the liberation of Paris and allowed Allied forces to slog across Europe to defeat Adolph Hitler’s troops. Blaizot spent the following months trying to return the dog tag to officials in America. Friends connected him to Chuck Hodge, a Dallas, Texas man who writes about WWII veterans. Hodge was in Normandy when he learned about the tag. After returning to the U.S., Hodge, whose wife is a native of Indiana, contacted local veteran officials after learning Wallace was from Indiana. He was referred to the Grant County Veterans Affairs Office where officials were especially interested in returning the tag to the family. Grant County Veterans Affairs Officer Bob Kelley assigned the task of locating the family to Marine veteran Cory Goodwin, a volunteer with the Veterans Affairs Office. Goodwin located the Wallace family. “It’s been a crazy story,” said Goodwin. It’s so awesome and we’re so glad we can give this back to the family.”

I saw a very interesting study the other day. As intriguing as it was, it didn’t and shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, really. Most of us these days participate in some form of social media, be it Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. In doing so we keep up with the lives of hundreds. We see their vacation and family photos, hear about job promotions, “remember” their birthdays, and strangely enough see what they are eating . I am sure this all seems pretty obvious to you. And, if you regularly visit social media you probably also notice the patterns of posts coming from certain people. I have definitely noticed that some individuals consistently post uplifting and positive quotes, photos, etc. And others, unfortunately, rarely have anything but negative and angry comments about just about everything under the sun. If you find that many of your friends behave a large like the latter, not only can it dampen your day, it could actually be hurting your health. “What?!” you say… I will explain. The findings of a study coming from the University of Pennsylvania determined this correlation. The results showed that the nature of Twitter posts in certain regions can be a strong predictor of the community’s psychological well-being and can predict rates of heart disease. The research team explains that psychological factors, such as anxiety, stress, and depression are known risk factors for heart disease, but in addition, the expression of negative emotion portrayed either through speaking or writing can also trigger social behaviors that can lead to heart disease such as poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and substance abuse. The study was conducted by analyzing the language used in tweets from 1,300 counties in the US between 2009 and 2010 and used that data to create a map with counties ranging from positive overall tweets (colored in green) and continued along the spectrum to negative overall tweets (red). Then juxtaposed next to this map is another with the same counties indicating heart disease deaths. Low rates in green (with eight shades in between) and high rates in red. The similarity is astounding! Please look it up and see for yourself at medicalnewstoday.com. This leads one to believe that the grumpy and cranky people die younger than their Pollyanna counterpart. Seems to make sense. However according to the study’s co-author Hansen Andrew Schwartz, “The relationship between language and mortality is particularly surprising since the people tweeting angry words and topics are in general not the ones dying of heart disease. But that means that if many of your neighbors are angry, you are more likely to die of heart disease.” INTERESTING. So this obviously infers that those exposed to the negative comments have a higher risk of health risks than those spewing them. A final point that the study mentioned is that Twitter can be useful for identifying the drivers behind negative comments by region which could help inform public health interventions. What I primarily took away from this study is that it is important to pay attention to the energy that you put out to the world. Being negative definitely doesn’t affect just yourself but all of those around you. When I am having a bad day, for whatever reason, I am happy to get back to work. No one wants to listen to a cranky trainer. So, I snap out of it at least for that period of time, and it almost always makes me feel better or forget my silly problems altogether. And knowing that MY mood can improve or hinder someone’s actual health will certainly reinforce to have a positive attitude around others. Last point to think about: When some have a bad day especially due to someone’s negativity, they can’t wait to get home and have a drink or maybe a gallon of ice cream to “escape”. Conversely, when some have a great day especially due to someone’s positivity, they may enjoy a workout class, a walk, or a fabulous healthy meal. In the last 10 years of serving the Broad Ripple area, lots of people have come into Backyard Birds. Most come to the store to buy bird food, bird houses, and bird baths. Many have a story to share. Those yarns are probably the best part of working in the store. Stories range from “wild kingdom” tragedies about wildlife in people’s backyards to accounts of great moments like owls hatching their young, pairs of pileated woodpeckers, or lost and found birds. The conversations are peppered with reports about pesky squirrels and chipmunks. People especially enjoy telling jokes that cause a smile or chuckle. Some of these are so good that I just have to pass them along. So here goes:

On March 4, The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple presented Carmel resident Dick Bennett with the Sertoman of the Year award for his outstanding service and contributions to the club. In addition the club also honored James McClelland, CEO of Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana, with the Service to Mankind award and presented him with a $2,000 check for Goodwill Industries. “Dick joined our club in 2000 with Dick Lanham as his sponsor. He leads a Program Committee, and has for many years, that gives us excellent speakers each week—at no cost. He himself spends countless hours to obtain speakers that will be of interest to us, and Dick is not afraid to go after the special, unique, well-known people from all walks of life. Not only not afraid, but we believe he readily cherishes the opportunity and duty to do so! The programs that we have are one of our top draws and they continue this way year after year.” “Dick deals blackjack at many of our casino parties and has been doing so over the past nearly 15 years. He plays a pretty consistent game of golf at the monthly club outings.” Dick graduated from IU in 1954 where he had played tennis on the varsity team.
