mario@broadripplegazette.com School of Metaphysics Director Kerry Keller described a career transition in his life that led him to a new area of personal growth and development. “I found the school when I lived in St. Louis 12 years ago. I owned two businesses at the time, was a weekend warrior athlete and came to my first few classes. I was flabbergasted and realized that this is the education that everybody needs. Within a year, I was teaching it and four years later, I directed the school in St. Louis. After retirement, I moved to the College of Metaphysics, located in the Ozarks (Windyville, Missouri), which is a 1700 acre ranch. I moved to Chicago three years later where I opened up a school there and then moved here (to Indianapolis) three years ago. This location has been here (at 6138 N. Hillside) since 1995. There are 16 schools around the Midwest,” he explained. Keller described the meaning of metaphysics: “The simplest form (definition) of meta means ‘beyond’ and physics means ‘the study of the laws of the physical planet that we live on.’ It’s the study of the consciousness. The main thing we teach is about your consciousness – teaching people how they think, why they think and how they respond to things. Your consciousness is where you make choices. Your imagination, emotions, ego and identity affect your choices. We teach people how to respond to effectively make choices. The classes are taught in the evening. Students attend one night a week. There are four cycles and one cycle is 28 lessons. It’s an experimental course teaching people how they can practice their mental skills - concentration, undivided attention and reasoning. We show people how to exercise mental muscles that, along with their perspective and their perception, give a much better understanding of why things occur. I used to own a small interior design business and a manufacturing School of Metaphysics company. I used to design 6138 N. Hillside Ave. [II31 on map] homes, but now I design minds,” he noted. Your attention is the most important skill that you have. If you’re happy, full of joy, are constantly upbeat and curious, what you put your attention to grows positively. The challenge for humans is that we’re very habitual. We develop these patterns all our life. We (at the school) teach people to release these patterns so they can create the type of circumstances they want in their life. If you don’t have enough time and money, the mind will still help you produce these things. We help people change so they can learn how to get out of habitual patterns and discover the kinds of growth in their life that they want. We

Banner Artist of the issue Matt Kräck is the banner artist in this issue. Matt earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art with an emphasis in graphic design, and a minor in advertising from the University of Southern Indiana. He will soon earn his master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from West Virginia University. Matt has enjoyed showing art around Indianapolis for nearly a decade and recently has begun dabbling in curating shows. While lately photography has been an area of focus, Matt also excels in drawing (especially colored pencil), acrylic painting, mixed media that often incorporates LED lighting, and of course, graphic design. Dream Cars at the IMA Enjoy the “Dream Cars” new exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It is a must during Indy 500 month. The IMA has also issued their schedule for Summer Nights, outdoor movies. They start with National Lampoon’s vacation on June 5. Films start at dusk but come early. by

Get in the swim at the Broad Ripple Pool They are getting ready for summer at BR Park. Summer class registration is open. The Broad Ripple Pool will be open for Memorial Day weekend (May 2325) then closed the 26-29, and will officially open for the season on May 30th. (The pool closes August 2nd.) Pool hours are Monday-Saturday 11 a.m,- 6 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m.- 6 p.m. Finally, spots for summer day camp are still available, but are filling fast. Camp runs from June 1-July 31 for ages 6-13 years. Contact BR Park for detail or visit indyparks.gov. Invasion of the garlic mustard threatens BR parks Help eradicate the garlic mustard, an invasive weed which crowds out the native wild flowers. The plant is edible and I saw a family out collecting it last week at Marrot Park.) Creative Renewal at the Art Center Have you seen the Creative Renewal and student art exhibits at the Art Center? Also, the Art Fair Preview party will be on May 15, with the Art Fair itself on May 16-17. Holliday Park Wildflower Walk May 9, Habitat Hall Re-Opens It’s very busy at Holliday Park. A wildflower walk is scheduled for May 9 at 10 a.m. with Norma Wallman, author of Wildflowers of Holliday Park. Enjoy jack in the pulpits, wild geraniums, and May applies. Also, stop by the new exhibit hall in the nature center which just re-opened after a major model. Finally, the Indiana Native Plant Society will be having their annual native plant sale until 12:30 p.m. on May 9 at Park Tudor School. Flatwater’s summer music series is back and I hear they have a new stage. Mars or the Moon has earned their status as a beloved Broad Ripple’s band. The group was formed by Joe Hart, Lani Williams. They soon added percussionist Lenen Nicola to fill out the sound. Joe and Lani share the songwriter duties, often collaborating on each other’s songs. They met when Lani came to Joe for guitar lessons: “She came for her first lesson Mara or the Moon playing at a Bob-Fest. and played me a couple of her songs. I could tell that she was already an artist, and I told her straight off, ‘I know that you think that you came here for guitar lessons, but really you came here to make an album. I’ll help you do it.’” As they say, the rest is history. The trio is often joined on stage and in the studio by keyboardist Kevin Silva, bassist Roger Osburn and drummer Glen Hopkins. Their sound is a danceable mix of roots rock, folk, psychedelic, with a heaping dash of singer-songwriter vibe mixed in.

I’ve been enjoying the #ThrowBackThursday (or #tbt) photos that the Art Center has been posting on their Facebook page. The Art Fair first started in 1971 at what was then-called (and as my mother still calls it), the Art League. The juried art fair has grown over the years to include four stages of music, gourmet food court, local beer and wines, a children’s activity area, and a student show. I didn’t have the lineup for the four stages at press time, but I can tell you the music is always excellent. I hope to see you there!

Let’s party like it’s the mid-1990s! Not that I can party like I did in the mid-90s. Anyway, this is a great chance to see two great bands that represent that era of the Indianapolis music scene admirably. Indianapolis icons and worldwide cult favorites, The Vulgar Boatmen don’t play very often these days and this show will be especially sweet because they will be joined by long-time band member, viola-ist Kathy Kolata, who hasn’t performed with them for a decade. The Vulgar Boatmen play original pop music with smart-kid lyrics. The Lovemeknots will open the show, playing their own delightful blend of power pop and original tunes. This show is not to be missed by long-time fans or people that want to hear a slice of Indianapolis musical history.

This one was sent in by Lynn Levy. Lynn took a picture of the Rest In Peace sign on the railing at about 72nd and Westfield Boulevard. Many readers will know this spot where the mystery artist painted colorful icons on the end of a storm-ravaged tree that was sticking out at passing drivers. These mini art statements have appeared dozens of times over the past couple of years. A couple of weeks ago the tree disappeared.
Below are 2 recent and related poems. The first is a playful piece about Jimi Hendrix’s estate and his penchant for amassing parking tickets with his Corvette. The second is a variation on advice given to me by Dr. Marcia Summers at Ball State U. It is some of the greatest advice I have ever received.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

First 12 BlueIndy electric car share stations - includes BR
The City of Indianapolis, Bolloré Group and Indianapolis Power & Light Company announced construction will begin soon on the first 12 of up to 200 BlueIndy electric car share stations in Indianapolis. As part of the launch effort, BlueIndy plans to hire up to 50 local employees by the end of 2015. The BlueIndy system will be the largest electric car share service in the U.S. when complete. Stations throughout the city will offer the membership-based car share service as well as electric vehicle charging infrastructure that the public can use to charge personal EVs. A full grand opening for the BlueIndy service is anticipated to take place in summer of 2015. The following are the first 12 station sites: 107 W Washington St., 49 N Capitol Ave., 103 E Ohio St., 11 N Delaware St., 1107 E Morris St., 27 S Audubon Rd., 3996 Shelby St., 731 Broad Ripple Ave., 121 N Delaware St., 228 W Maryland St., 476 N New Jersey St., 333 University Blvd. The BlueIndy system will be financed by more than $40 million from BlueIndy, a $6 million commitment from the City of Indianapolis and up to $3.7 million investment from IPL. Public dollars will support public infrastructure improvements, including road markings, small signage, and curb and street maintenance. The City will receive a portion of BlueIndy’s profits and the State of Indiana and Marion County will receive an additional excise tax from BlueIndy. IPL funds will support work related to public utility infrastructure for the EV charging services.

I am down in Hilton Head on my annual spring sojourn. As I write this a terrible storm has blown in over the island tonight and the lightning and thunder is ferocious. I feel like I should be sitting down to the keyboard to write a horror story. Hail is pounding and I am ready for the lights to go out. So without further ado I need to get this turned in by deadline (always the procrastinator but hey I’m on Island Time)….. Last month I opened my email box and found this intriguing information from a guy named Mark Schuette promoting his invention, a dog powered scooter, making dog mushing available to everyone. He included lots of photos. It ships from Buffalo NY. I am always hearing about dogs that are serious pullers when walked and dogs that need lots of exercise. His invention is really genius. I think this would be so much fun! We use to run our Dalmatian alongside our Schwinn tandem bike. She ran like the wind and loved it. She would have been the perfect candidate for this form of exercise. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the middle section of the top row of the easy puzzle that contains the 2-3-4-5-6. The 7 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces to both sides of the 3. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 4-6. The only space left is next to the 5. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The grass and the glass Last week I made my first “mow” of the year. Always an adventure in my wild, rambling Broad Ripple yard. Mr. Mole awakened from his hibernation early and has been tunneling through the soil for the past month searching for grubs. The stringy tufts of wild onion-smelling grass poked through the ground, about the same time the creeping charlie and dandelions sprouted. The soft Spring soil drenched by a few good rains went from paper bag brown to wine bottle green overnight. So, I set the wheels on the mower high, filled up the gas can, then the lawn mower, and said a quick prayer that it would start. Several pulls later, it did and I was off and mowing. Which set my mind on wines to quench the thirst of such a task. A lawn mower wine should be easy to find, easy to drink and affordable. It’s a bottle that you can drink on its own or share with a neighbor who has also spent the past hour doing the same. Most importantly, it needs to be tasty enough to make you want to finish the grass so you can get to the glass. Espiral Rose, Portugal–crisp, tart, pink wine that can be served chilled or at room temperature. I love the fresh flavors of cranberry and clean finish. And since the weather continues to be fickle, the days its only 40 and I mow, I might want it at room temp. The days it hits 70, chill it and swill it. Several readers wrote in about last issue’s Where in the Village? answer. We misidentified the group of birds as a cast of hawks. It is actually a venue of turkey vultures. One caller stated that she has watched them for years gather on various buildings including Broad Ripple Methodist Church.

BRVA Spring Public Meeting held at IAC By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com About 100 people attended the Spring public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) that was held in the Ruth Lilly Library of the Indianapolis Art Center (IAC). Food and drink was provided by Broad Ripple Brewpub and 1001 Food & Drink. BRVA president Elizabeth Marshall opened the meeting around 7pm. She described each of the BRVA committees and the impacts each has had on the Village. These include beautification, special events, public safety, land use, parking, and others. Elizabeth introduced the new IMPD head of North District, Commander Chris Bailey. The commander detailed his plans for North District, which he explained, by population is the 3rd largest city in Indiana, and on weekends it is the 2nd largest. He mentioned extra patrols, stepped-up bike patrols, and the possibility of making Broad Ripple its own zone in North District. There will be a more strict enforcement of loitering, cruising, parking, etc. laws in the area. Although there will be a transition period to account for the new parking restrictions that are being implemented. The BRVA Esprit de Corps award was given to Marigold owner Linda Shikany for her IMPD North District Commander Bailey. many years of giving to the community through volunteering for Gallery Tours, Cultural District planning, beautification all over the Village including the Bill Brink Memorial Garden, and so much more. Door prizes, donated by Bambu Salon, Dr. Eve Earley, Bike Line, and Petite Chou, were given out over the course of the meeting. The Fall public meeting will include the election of BRVA board officers. It is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20 at the IAC at 7pm.

In our “first world” society sometimes we find ourselves getting caught up in frivolous problems such as a low cell phone charge, a lukewarm latte, or pesky drivers. I, from time to time, am guilty as charged. However, it is refreshing and eye opening to witness situations that can put the preciousness of life into perspective. I was fortunate enough to return to Boston to run the marathon on April 20th and participating in this event always make me so grateful and this year was certainly no exception. The weather forecast was nothing short of bleak. The forecast called for significant rain accumulation and winds gusting from 20-30 mph from the east. You see, the vast majority of marathons, as most races, are a general loop. So, if you have wind, you will likely have it head on and also at your back for roughly half of the time. BUT, Boston is a point to point marathon…starting 26.2 miles from a small town in the west and heading east to end in Boston. Yes, you got that right, a strong head wind the ENTIRE time. Having been crazy lucky enough to have never run this distance in rain once, I was super nervous and pouty. “Woe is me.” I kept thinking to myself and aloud to the likely annoyance of my husband. I was certain that it was going to be a treacherous experience and that the weather was going to keep people from coming out to spectate and felt awful for my family that drove 15 hours to do just that. Well, I am happy to say that I was dead wrong. NOTHING keeps the people of Boston from coming out on Patriot’s Day, their very own holiday, to support the runners, the Red Sox, and their beloved city. As I ran along in the rain, I began to realize that the bad weather, a potential disappointing finish time, my recent painful experience with a kidney stone, and other challenges in my life was so small and petty to the grand scheme of things. I have one inspiring story that embodies to power of the human spirit to overcome what may seem the impossible. The marathon has several physically challenged participants from amputees, blind, and various disabilities many of which require the help of guides. Around mile four in the cold, rain and wind, I came upon such an individual who was slowly walking with the help of a guide. His gait showed a very serious neuromuscular disorder yet he was plodding along with a mission. I thought to myself “Wow, how cool. He must be doing a couple of miles. That’s amazing.” Yeah, I felt quite a bit less sorry for myself and a bit ashamed about my earlier whining as I slapped the hands of little kids who must have been freezing, yet were excited to be out there to help us get to that finish line. And sure enough it happened… I crossed the finish line in one piece and had yet another amazing experience despite my earlier and selfish feelings of impending doom. I luckily witnessed a marriage proposal which brought a tear to my eye. My loving family welcomed me and we shared an awesome celebratory meal together. I felt like a pretty lucky girl. Wait I got off track…back to the inspiring story. As I sat in the airport waiting to return to Indy I was killing time on Facebook. I came upon an article titled “Inspiring Venezuelan Man Last to Finish Boston Marathon in 20 Hours.” So, of course, I had to see what this was about. To my AMAZEMENT, sure enough it was the gentleman I had seen around 11:00am the day of the marathon. His name is Maickel Melamed, a 38-year-old with a severe form of muscular dystrophy. He walked the entire course with the help of several volunteers and ended around 5:00am Tuesday morning amidst torrential downpours and thunderstorms; particularly in the last few miles. I was blown away by his attitude, perseverance and wisdom as I watched a video of his interview. “After 20 hours of rain wind and cold, Boston’s still strong. It was real tough but I was marveled by this amazing team. One problem, one solution. One problem, one solution. One problem, one solution. And that speaks to the human power. When we connect to each other in teamwork, we can do anything. It’s a message for everyone; it’s a message for the world that when altogether we can create amazing stuff, and in teamwork we can connect our strengths to create amazing stuff.” So simply put, yet brilliant and spot on. Gosh, and how well to put me in my place. While I laid my head in a comfortable bed, this man beat all odds to finish what he started; along with dozens of gracious volunteers literally singing with him across the famous line on Boylston Street. Maickel hasn’t let his disability or what society has probably told him what he “can’t” do hundreds or thousands of times over his life hold him back. In fact, he turned his situation into “ability” and is a true inspiration to the will of the human spirit. He may have come in dead last, but to me, he is the true winner. So, despite our problems albeit large or small, attitude, perspective, teamwork and determination can never hurt. Thank you Maickel for the reminder Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue I never tire of early spring walks in my yard. This is not only the time I take inventory on what made it through the winter but also look for interesting objects left by winter. I’m also watching for new growth pushing through the ground to herald spring’s arrival. My backyard is a mix of a few sunny spots and heavy tree canopy. The gardens include a tiny prairie area and wooded edges. I can find the dregs of winter—an interesting twig, a knot hole wrestled to the ground by an overbearing squirrel, and lichen and mosses that didn’t seem to mind the snow cover. It‘s the exercise of spring to gather objects that will become décor in my fairy gardens in May. The early meanderings morph into to weekly walks or continue until the soggy ground doesn’t swallow my boots. These jaunts let me observe the unfolding. My observations are rewarded with seeing the grass greening, the wildflowers emerging, and occasionally a colorful lost feather. The north side of my backyard has been allowed to do its own thing so wildflowers abound. First there are snow drops and spring beauty. Close thereafter are the wood or sweet violets. The violet is my all-time favorite spring wildflower. This woodland treat is one of spring’s first flowers — colors of violet, white or yellow. The long stems can be gathered into a perfect bouquet for a friend or woven into a wreath. The blossoms can be gathered by young or old, and the flowers can be eaten if the habitat is not chemically treated. Candied violets make lovely decoration on frosted baked goods. Fresh violets can garnish salads too. I have also made violet vinegar; it’s a beautiful purple color, a good base for vinaigrettes. One of the best of all culinary creations is decorating wedges of cheese with violets, topped with a white wine jellied glaze. Years ago, violets were used for perfumes, but many natural scents have been replaced. Violet syrups had their place in pharmacies of old as a laxative and coloring agent. Conserves of blossoms were prescribed as an expectorant. Early chemists could also use a violet infusion as a substitute for litmus to test acids and alkalis. A poultice of leaves were applied to hasten the healing of bruises. Powdered violet roots (rhizomes) have been used to induce vomiting; the violet is still being studied as to its medicinal value. This remarkable woodland plant has a long history as one of man’s helpful friends. As the spring season moves into warmer days, the blooming violets disappear, but their foliage can gain footing in the garden and become a gardener’s pest. Then I start tracking other wildflowers: Celanese poppy, Dutchman Breeches, Trillium, May Apples, Jack in the Pulpits, Blue Belles. If you drive along Kessler you may see yards filled with lovely spring blue flowers. Sicilia is a small bulb that spread through the yard and becomes a carpet of blue (just right for attracting fairies!).
