Deckademics DJ School at 61st & College By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Deckademics DJ School co-owners Doug Morris and Nick Saligoe recently described their business off the record. “I’ve deejayed professionally under the name “MetroGnome” (www. deejaymetrognome.com) for about 10 years since I got out of college. I was working with a number of people out of the Martin Luther King Jr. Multi-Service Center at 42nd and Illinois Street, working with some kids in the community in some after school classes. We wrote a grant to the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center and got accepted. We held classes there for about two and a half to three years. We gradually grew out of that space. I knew that I wanted to have a physical location of my own. I took about two and a half to three years to get a business together and at the end of 2013, Doug and I officially opened. We just celebrated our first year,” Saligoe explained. Morris also owns Old Soul Entertainment (www.oldsoulent.com) that does event planning, marketing and promotions. He hosts events at the Jazz Kitchen at 54th Street and College Avenue. “I deejay his events and have been for nearly a decade. I have an education degree from Indiana University. We cover different areas of the business Deckademics DJ School and we have different areas of that way,” he 6108 N. College Ave. [K2 on map] co-ownership added. (317) 662-8661 “I run a sign promotion company that started in 2005. www.deckademics.com Nick was one of the first group of DJs to host this specific brand of parties we were doing. We started doing business together in late 2006. We do event marketing for local companies and marketing promotions. We’re closely associated with the Indy Jazz Fest and Jazz Kitchen and are involved in developing local Indy talent. It was established in 2005,” Morris mentioned. Music has played a key role in his family life. “My mom was in a touring choir that traveled across the United States. My grandmother also sang in a choir. My brother was a DJ and that is what kind of got me into the DJ culture as a kid. There was also a rich music culture that has been a part of the rich arts culture in the Broad Ripple community. I was a product of that growing up. My first job was at the Kaleidoscope Library (a former Indianapolis Marion County Public Library Branch). I actually moved some of the bookshelves into the new library (at 4180 N. College Avenue). I went to Ball State University and IUPUI and majored in Communications,” he said. His musical interests evolved from playing the trumpet at an early age. Morris and Saligoe were born and raised in Indianapolis. Morris went to Arsenal Technical High School and Saligoe went to Pike High School. They started the New Year with civic-minded projects. “In 2015, we’re really

Banner Artist of the issue Christian Richardson is the banner artist in this issue. Christian was born in Bloomington, and at around ten years old moved with his family to Indianapolis. “Ever since I can remember, these two cities have exposed me to the rich artistic and cultural diversity they have to offer. Over the years, I have studied many different subjects and gathered a wide variety of skills that I continue to develop and explore with my art. “I am currently receiving a degree in Fine Arts with a focus on graphic design from Indiana University, after having changed my major numerous times before deciding that art was what I ultimately wanted to devote my efforts to. I have studied everything from music and film to theater and textiles, and found that all of these have personally inspired me and informed the way I perceive and approach art. Recently, I’ve been attracted to creating process-driven work that combines mixed media such as photography, painting, and both digital and ink illustrations. By exploring interactions between color, texture, and the creation of abstract imagery, my most recent “drawings” are intended to evoke personal and emotional responses. As for the future, I hope to explore as many different artistic avenues as possible in order to collaborate with fellow artists, adopt new skills, and continually evolve through my work as an artist. I can be reached through my e-mail or my Instagram page, where I will be sharing more recent works of mine in the months to come.” Email: crichhh@gmail.com Instagram: xian_richardson To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Broad Ripple Gazette we are featuring a year of local artists by allowing them to interpret our banner, while incorporating the words “The Broad Ripple Gazette”. Contact us at info@broadripplegazette.com to inquire if any open issues remain. Still looking for cartoonist, tattoo artist, pen and ink, etc.

trying to get into the community and do outreach work, like partnerships with the Indianapolis Public Schools. We’ve going to do an after school program at Manual High School. We’ve had Boys’ Clubs, Girls’ Clubs and the University High School from Carmel visit here. We really want to get into more of that this year. Techpoint, a technology non-profit software design company, has also visited the studio. They bring college students studying software design into town and take them into internships. We had a chance to work with them,” Morris noted. Deckademics provides the tools and knowledge for aspiring deejays. “We are not genre specific. We do teach the skill set and allow the students to apply it to whatever music they are looking to do. There are little nuances that change between the genres of music, but we want them to sound as fundamentally basic as possible,” he emphasized. A vacant Broad Ripple office location was music to their ears. “We just looked in this general vicinity when we were driving around looking for spaces when we saw this place. We called the guy and the space was available,” Saligoe said. Their studio at 6108 N. College Avenue, Suite 200, opened in December of 2013. Deckademics received a Best of Indy Award from Indianapolis Monthly magazine in December of 2014. Approximately 40 students were taking weekly classes in late January, but nearly 400 individuals have learned from their DJ teaching and methodology. “Classes are once a week for 90 minutes. They are broken up into sessions. The first class is a novice course. It provides the framework to becoming a great DJ, learning the fundamentals, such as the basics of scratching and mixing, counting beats per minute (BPMs) and recognizing song structure. We set up the novice course to be six weeks. Once you get past that six weeks, classes are two 12week sessions. The advanced classes are six weeks in length,” Morris noted. “We offer a couple of other courses. We have a four-hour weekend warrior crash course for people who want to get a feel for deejaying, on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. once or twice a month. We also offer a DJ class for couples on either Fridays or Saturdays designed to be a fun experience. People have done the dinner and movie thing forever, but this is a different experience,” Saligoe emphasized. The course offers hands-on involvement into DJing where couples can record their first mix. For more information, contact 662-8661 or preview their website: www.deckademics.com. Whether you have ambitions to be a deejay or play music for your friends and family, Doug Morris and Nick Saligoe just might be playing your tune at Deckademics.

Frank Dean & The Last Country Band and The Punkin Holler Boys Sunday, May 17 The Jazz Kitchen 4377 N. College Ave. - 21+, 6 – 9 PM, $10

This will be a fun way to spend your Sunday night. The Jazz Kitchen is switching it up a bit and opening the stage to a fun night of bluegrass/country/honky-tonk music. The Punkin Holler Boys will open the show and have been around since 1998, and they always make me glad that I came to see them. Singer-songwriter Frank Dean has been performing for over 40 years and you might know him from his Sindacato days or from the bands, Blue De Ville, Hillbilly Central, and American Flyers. His songs have been performed and recorded by over 60 artists. He describes himself as a “veteran of every honky tonk, dive, and skull orchard you can think of.” The Last Country Band is Scott Parkhurst (guitar, harmonica, vocals), Herb Clarkson (pedal steel), LuAnn Lancton (vocals, percussion), Floyd Tucker (bass), and Steve Kennedy (drums). And I suggest that you plan on having dinner at The Jazz Kitchen. The food is always excellent!

Hello lovelies! I can’t believe that May is almost over and we’re into the rhythm of summer. I don’t want it to fly by too quickly! For me summertime is kicked off by Record Store Day in April and anchored on the other end by the Indiana State Fair. The ISF free concert series was just announced and it includes everything from the Indigo Girls to the Village People, with some Big & Rich and K.C. and the Sunshine Band sprinkled in for good measure. I’ll be highlighting the shows as the State Fair gets closer (August 7 – 23).

Otto’s Funhouse Memorial Celebration Monday, May 18 Melody Inn 3826 N Illinois St. - 21+, 7 pm doors, 8 pm show

Many of you know Otto the Comedian from his long-time comedy show and his monthly open-mic comedy night. I first met him in the 1982, as Ricky Pfeffer, a member of the Slammies, an iconic punk band. I was drawn to his energy and positivity. He taught me many things and gave me the confidence to be myself and to celebrate seemingly little things and how fun it was to be dressed for the occasion. His kindness and generosity set the bar for future relationships. A celebration of all things Otto is planned at the Melody Inn. His songs will be covered by his friends and great musicians – including his brother “Rapper”, Cara Jean Marcy, and Holly and Rick Garrett – photos and flyers will be shared and stories will be told. Even if you didn’t know Otto well, or even at all, please come and soak in all of the amazingly positive and quirky glory what was Otto. So bring a bell, bring some food, and most of all bring yourself. And for goodness sakes, in Otto’s honor, be nice to each other.

Tad Robinson Day Into Night CD Release Concert Friday, May 22 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N College Avenue 21+, two shows: 7:30 PM, 10:00 PM, $15

Tad Robinson’s latest record, Day Into Night, popped right onto the Living Blues International Radio Chart when it was released last month. And we’re lucky enough that he calls Indiana home! He tours internationally and is a seven-time Blues Music Award nominee. I’m the first to admit that blues and soul music scares me a little bit, sometimes I feel like I’m not smart enough to understand it, that somehow it’s too complex. But mostly it scares me because it gets to the heart of emotions, and more than any other music for me, it quickly becomes personal. I always love hearing Tad because he does a wonderful job of stripping the songs down to their essence and letting his beautiful voice tell the story. photo by Amy Robinson The Jazz Kitchen is the perfect spot to soak in Tad and his always excellent band.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Sandy Fenstermaker with her award and her family members at the ceremony.

Jan Brown Award goes to Sandy Fenstermaker Sandy Fenstermaker, long time Broad Ripple High School coach, received the prestigious Jan Brown Award at the annual Marion County Coaches of Girl’s Sports banquet on Wednesday, May 6. The award recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly, in their lifetime, to the promotion and betterment of girl’s and women’s sports in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The award is presented annually at the MCCGSA banquet where they recognize the outstanding senior female athletes in the City and County high schools. Her husband, Jerry, and their family of five children kept the award a surprise and joyfully joined her at the awards dinner. Known as “Mrs. F” by the student athletes on her teams, Sandy has coached the BRMHS Women’s golf team from 1977 - present, coached the BRMHS Men’s and Women’s swim teams from 2002 - present, assistant coached the BRHS girl’s track team for many years in the 1980’s and 1990’s, and coached the Brebeuf Men’s and Women’s swim team from 1975 - 1993. She has coached a State Championship Diver, numerous state swimming and track finalists, and most currently a city swimming champion and city swimming record holder who just happens to be her granddaughter. A 1954 Broad Ripple High School graduate and BR resident for over 50 years, she has also taught many children and adults in the area to swim and play golf. She excels in teaching special needs children, adults, and those who have a fear of the water. She also provides free coaching to many dedicated early morning lap swimmers at the Riviera Club. Despite the onset of knee problems as a child, to say that Sandy was an irrepressible athlete is like saying Carmel H.S. is kind of good at swimming! From an outdoors, “get out and do it” kind of family, there wasn’t a time she wasn’t on the go. This love of sports and of generally being active is translated daily into a coaching career which has spanned decades. Far more important than the years however is the sheer number of lives she has touched in a positive way and the love of sports she has imbued on thousands of children growing up here in Indianapolis. The life lessons that all sports have to offer have a serious advocate in Sandy! The following are a few highlights of her contributions over the years: A 1958 graduate of Miami University (OH) she is married to Jerry Fenstermaker and the parent of 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild… with a couple of more expected soon! A lifelong aquatics instructor at the Riviera Club as well as the Jordan YMCA, Sandy has not only taught thousands of kids of to swim, but she has specialized in working with special-needs children as well as those who have a fear of the water. Finally, in addition to continuing to coach, Sandy is one of the founding board members as well as the President of a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to support an active lifestyle through access to sports and related opportunities. Their latest project includes bringing a water safety program to first and second grade classes in the IPS school system.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 2 in the right section of the middle row of the easy puzzle that contains the 1-4-8-9. The 2 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 1-9. The 2 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the three spaces along the right edge. The only space left is between the 4-8. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Reagan Frank, Chelsea Lo, and Channing Christian with their Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple National Heritage Essay Contest awards.

Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple essay winners The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple has sponsored the National Heritage Essay Contest for more than 30 years. The contest is open to sixth grade students in public, private and parochial schools in the Greater Indianapolis area. The topic students were asked to address in their essays was “What Freedom Means to Me.” Sertoma believes that participation in the National Heritage Essay Contest encourages students to better understand the founding principles of our country and to consider how those principles affect their lives today. This year, 16 schools totaling 57 classrooms submitted over 1,100 essays from Marion and Hamilton County. Classroom winners were chosen from among each of the top three classroom essays submitted by their teachers. A total of 25 finalist essays were identified for consideration as one of three grand prize winners. The grand prize winners of the 2014-2015 National Heritage Essay Contest are: Third place–($200.00) Channing Christian from Park Tudor Preparatory School; teacher–Jennifer Palmer. Channing resides in Zionsville with her parents, Justin & Darrianne Christian. Second place–($250.00) Chelsea Lo from The Orchard School; teacher–Ms. Karen Dean. Chelsea resides in Carmel with her parents Dr. Carlo & Joyce Lo. First place–($375.00) Reagan Frank from Riverside Intermediate School; teacher–Mr. Anthony Ioannacci. Reagan lives in Fishers with her parents Tony & Heather Frank. There was also one student whose essay was deemed honorable mention. He is Daniel Melbert who attends St. Richards Episcopal School; teacher–Ms. Andrea Neal. The three grand finalists, their teachers, and their family members were invited to the annual Sertoma recognition luncheon to be held at the Northside K of C on May 6 at 11:30. Each grand prize-winner read her essay to the members of the Sertoma Club and guests. The three winners receive a plaque and certificate, a copy of the Bill of Rights, and their monetary award.

The 1970s band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, wrote the song lyrics …‘Down on the corner, out in the street. People come from all around, just to watch the magic’. Perfect words to describe the Broad Ripple Art Fair. I am proud to say I have been part of this showcase of art for twenty years. The fair, with its root set deep in Indiana’s art culture, is celebrating its 45th year and it has been bringing excellent art and crafts to local, regional and national visitors since 1970. 1970, the year of important movement in Vietnam, the year ‘The Me’ generation began, the year the Beatles broke up, the year IBM introduced the floppy disc and of course, the year Monday Night Football debuted. A lot has happened in the world since that year. And here in Indiana, the Broad Ripple Art Fair has weathered through….literally. Through a tornado, blistering heat, and unseasonably cold weather, it has been here, every spring, letting people know the dull days of winter are over and it is time to come together to see great art. This art fair has evolved into one of the premier arenas where artists like myself can transition from local to regional to national players. It provides unique opportunities for us to come together and introduce our best stuff to dealers, collectors, interior designers, etc. There are other options to be sure, but the face-to-face interaction is tough to top. When it comes to visual art, hardly anything beats firsthand viewings and chat-ups with the artists and craftsmen themselves. This fair, attracting over 15,000 visitors, offers exhibitors easy access to potential clients over a Douglas David at his Art Fair tent. two-day period. Fairs as large as this one are indispensable for artist who aspires to play the game. When I began my relationship with the Broad Ripple Art Fair two decades ago, my family was very much involved. My mother and my grandmother agreed to come and help me sell my stuff. Over the years, visitors recognized the two girls in my booth and felt very comfortable asking them questions about my art and about my journey to becoming a painter. And they loved hearing my grandmother’s colorful stories about her flying days during World War II. Having success at this fair is considerably more complicated than decorating my booth with art and waiting for something to happen. It demands endurance, attitude and advance planning. I can’t just set up and sit here with my art and leave the rest to the promoters. Fairgoers tend to gravitate toward those of us who are thrilled to be here, and who demonstrate passion about what we’re doing. No art sells itself; someone has to step up and sell it, and be entertaining in the process. Visitors can sense if we would rather be somewhere else. My patrons appreciate warm welcomes and affable banter. It’s simple and no more complicated. It took three years of exhibiting here to get a footing and attract significant numbers of buyers. People are reluctant to spend big bucks with artists they don’t know or have never heard of, so each successful appearance makes the probability of sales that much greater. Another primary reason to be present here is to observe and interact with other artists and network with fellow professionals. Knowing what my colleagues are up to not only contributes to my knowledge base, but it cultivates lasting relationships that can lead to joint shows, sales, cross-promoting and much more. Art fair participation has become an integral part of my marketing plan and budget. Over the past twenty years, I have exhibited in major cities along both coasts of Florida, Michigan, Kansas City and most metropolitan areas along the northeast coastline. And I have realistic expectations. I don’t bank on huge profits every year at every show, but rather on strengthening relationships and meeting lots of interesting people, including potential buyers who may take weeks or even months to decide whether or not to buy my paintings. Well that’s my view from “down on the corner, out on the street” at the Broad Ripple Art Fair. I have looked forward to exhibiting here for twenty years. I’ll be here for the next twenty. Come by my corner and visit. – Douglas David www.douglasdavid.com

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)

ART MEETS WINE I caught the last few hours of the BR Spring Gallery Tour last Friday night. As I looked at the art, I also took a look at the wine being served. Large gatherings call for great values which made me think about some of the selections now widely available at local grocery stores. Gone are the days when the only place you could find a solid wine was a specialty store. Don’t get me wrong, I have been actively involved in the wine industry for almost 25 years as a journalist/ reviewer/TV & Radio host/wine judge and even an owner/buyer. But my goal has always been the same: to make affordable, delicious wine available to as many people as possible. Which is why I am thrilled to see better choices at groceries, big box, pharmacies and liquor stores. So–I thought about the art I reviewed on Friday night and what wines I thought would be fun to “pair” with them, that equally expressed the artistry both in the art and in the bottle. And were satisfying yet affordable as all wine and art should be. Editions Limited–They were serving Yellow Tail. Which worked with the modern abstract multi media art on display. Yellow Tail was one of the first “critter” labels from Australia to dominate the grocery wine world. Producers from down under found themselves with an abundance of wine grapes, so they created a wine that appealed to the casual American wine drinkers love of fruity oaky wines. A low, low price and easyto-identify label helped jettison the brand. You can find Yellow Tail virtually any where that wine is sold. Inspire–the art here was bright and playful which made me think a prosecco or frizzante would be fun. These lighter styles of sparkling wine are like giggles in a glass. Riondo and La Marco both make tasty easy to find offerings. Marigold Clothing–Linda Shikany’s store is like a gallery every day with her eye-appealing displays and chic, yet comfortable, clothing lines. Friday, she was showing the magnificent jewelry art of Camille Richard. Metals and stones of all colors created a natural yet elegant assortment of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Wearable art that was like a costume, so, thought of the fabulous wines from Francis Ford Coppola. The Rosso and Bianco are two of the best buys at any grocery store. Spend a few dollars more and indulge in the Sofia Rose–named for Coppola’s director daughter. Classy, dramatic, timely choices in the glass or for your body. Hotel Broad Ripple & Edington Katz Project–the hotel has its own bar and wine list but the seats were full so I didn’t have a chance to peruse the list. The art on Friday was that of Nick Hill who has an incredible talent for capturing the raw pure essence of nature and color and light. His various landscapes were dramatic and thought provoking. And reminded me of being in the Wine region of Mendoza, Argentina. So I wanted to sip wines from that area while enjoying Nick’s art. Reliable producers include Alamos, Norton, and Santa Julia. BRVA Land Use and Development April meeting By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com About 60 attended the April meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee, held at the Indianapolis Art Center’s Ruth Lilly Library. There were three items on the agenda: A. 6265 Broadway Street, David Kingen, regarding changes to this property. Hearing continued to May 14, 2015. This matter has been before the committee several times. The proposed project is now three condo units (down from five) to be built on the canal behind CVS. Some changes were made to the site plan the day before this meeting to accommodate requests. Remonstrators presented concerns and brought a scale model of the project to show the relative size on the lot. The committee voted to not support this project. B. Rogers Pool preliminary presentation by Gary Weaver, for J.C. Hart Company and the Blickman family. This presentation was for information only, as the project is in the early planning stages. The proposal is to build two five-story residences with parking. One on each of the sites (on both sides of 64th Street) that are currently Rogers Pools at 6364 Westfield Boulevard [E5 on map]. The current design shows 116 units with 147 parking spots. The committee had several thoughts about the project, but, in general, this project was met favorably by the committee. C. 910-924 Broad Ripple Avenue, Jay Wetzel regarding a variance to provide for an outdoor seating area exceeding one percent of the tenant space floor area (not permitted). Petition #2015-DV3-014 Hearing Tuesday, May 19, 2015. This proposal is at convert the rear sidewalk/patio area of Union Jack Pub, 924 Broad Ripple Avenue [H5 on map], into an outdoor dining area. The current breezeway on the north side of the pub would be removed to make room for about nine outdoor tables. The committee voted to support this project. The next public meeting of the committee is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26 at 6pm in the Ruth Lilly Library at the Indianapolis Art Center, 820 67th Street [A4 on map].

Remembering Fundamentals of Memorial Day can easily be overlooked in Indianapolis. Many activities surrounding the Indianapolis 500, the “Greatest Race Ever Run,” and the beginning of the summer season can overshadow the reasons we have Memorial Day and allow us to bypass its traditions. So let’s pause and reflect. Memorial Day is an American federal holiday that is now observed on the last Monday of May, although originally May 30th was the designated day. This holiday is to honor all the men and women who have died while serving in the United States military. Originally known as Decoration Day, people would pick fresh flowers from their gardens, go to a cemetery, and decorate the gravesites of soldiers. It is thought that the day was set aside to honor fallen warriors soon after the Civil War. More than 600,000 soldiers were killed during that war. Double the population size of the Ft. Wayne or Cincinnati to conceptualize the enormity of loss. Because of this horrendous loss, more deaths than any other conflict in US history, national cemeteries were established and local cities and towns began honoring those who fought for freedom. Although most stories about where Memorial Day began are legend, the federal government declared Waterloo, NY as the birthplace of Memorial Day. They began their celebration in May of 1866. Soon General John Logan, leader of the Northern veterans, called for a nationwide day for strewing flowers or decorating graves. So the customer of Decoration Day began May 30, 1868. In 1967, a federal law officially named May 30 as Memorial Day. In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May. The law did not take effect until 1971. So, now parades, speeches, concerts, and spectacles are celebrated on the last Monday in May. One bit of trivia, in 2016, Memorial Day will be on May 30th for those who remember the good old days. As we prepare to observe the three-day weekend that’s upcoming, let the true purpose of this day be foremost in out minds – reverently lauding those who have given their lives in service to our country.
