There were poster giveaways and lots of specials that night. Dave’s last show ran about 30 minutes long as he thanked everyone on the crew.

Banner Artist of the issue Steve Paddack is the banner artist in this issue. Steve is a painter who lives in NoBro and paints in SoBro. A graduate of the Herron School of Art and the University of Illinois, he is the owner and founder of Paint Box Studios, Inc., a company which specializes in decorative and fine painting, and whose projects include the large scenic murals for the Treasures of the Earth permanent exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Steve was part of the first wave of Massachusetts Avenue artists, a movement that helped breathe life into the nascent downtown cultural awakening. Steve has shown extensively in Indianapolis and most recently participated in a two-person show in Cincinnati at ThunderSky Gallery. mario@broadripplegazette.com Randy Fisher is a partner at DeveloperTown, located at 5255 Winthrop Avenue. He recently went off-line to describe the technology firm south of Broad Ripple. “The simplest way to describe DeveloperTown is that we bring new software products to life. We work on projects ranging from fantasy football prediction engines to precision agriculture. We are currently working with Beck Hybrid Seeds on their FarmServer project, which is built to help farmers leverage precision agriculture strategies to make decisions on their farms,” he explained. In a short-time, the software developer and design firm has made vast progress. “On January 1, 2010, we DeveloperTown were plotting the concept of company while we were 5255 Winthrop Ave. [PP24 on map] the renting space on the east side (855) 338.8696 of Indianapolis. Once we found this space, we bought it www.developertown.com and completely rehabilitated it. It was truly a warehouse and we had to make it workable office space. Year one to three was spent doing that. From a business growth standpoint, we have gone from 12 employees in year one to over 40. We started out doing software development, then design and then we added marketing services. Our theory is to get the product to market as fast as you reasonably can, learn and get the knowledge (from consumers) and then continue design making. The business has evolved over time. One of the biggest evolutions when we first set out, we were really only working with small entrepreneurial tech start-ups. We used the

Almost 100 were in attendance on May 21 for the groundbreaking ceremony on the site of the old Broad Ripple Shell station at 63rd and College Avenue [F3 on map]. Construction will begin soon on the Fresh Thyme Farmers Market grocery store (33,500 sq. ft.) and The Coil apartments (151 units). The project will also connect to a new canal esplanade that will run from College Avenue to Guilford Avenue and a parking garage on the north side of the Central Canal. Included in the ceremony were Mayor Ballard, Browning Investments Michael Browning, Elizabeth Marshall of the BRVA, and Fresh Thymeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chris Sherrell. According to Angela Wethington, Vice President of Asset Management at Browning, phase one (the store and garage) is tentatively scheduled to open in the spring of 2016. Phase two (the apartments) is scheduled for a 2017 opening.

learnings from working with these small companies to helping bigger companies launch new products. That new piece is key because you can treat it like a startup. The DeveloperTown team likes the variety of their work. They may work on healthcare, entertainment or education projects over a four to six week time frame. The variety is what keeps them interested and fresh,” Fisher mentioned. “Software developers and designers work in various houses customized by a local homebuilder. The concept of the houses is that when there is a project going on, we can push them together to bring developers, designers and engagement managers into a cul-de-sac model. The houses are on wheels and can be moved around DeveloperTown. We have a full-time person who basically works on the houses in here and makes modifications to them. She started out doing odds and ends when we were smaller, but with recent growth it has become a full-time job,” he said. DeveloperTown’s client base has expanded into new geographic boundaries. “We’re national at this point where we have clients on the east and west coast. The majority of our clients are in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. We were part of a project where entrepreneur Todd Wagner (from Cuban Wagner Company) had people involved in from all over the country. There is also the Speakeasy which is a co-working space people can share ideas and network. Typically a library atmosphere during the day, it hosts special events after hours when individuals log-off and want to engage in professional development. They often lend their skills to the local community in various ways. “We’re working with the Riviera Club and Joe Vuskovich at YATS on their websites right now,” Fisher mentioned. “The most rewarding part of my work is being able to improve people’s lives through well designed technology. Another thing I really enjoyed seeing is the economic development that has occurred since we moved into the area. We were the first ones here in scale. Now the entire stretch of Winthrop from 54th to 52nd is full of booming new businesses. Our plans are to continue growing and add 20 to 30 percent more staff,” he reflected. DeveloperTown partner Randy Fisher is more than just an entrepreneur. He and his staff are the catalyst in reviving a vacant urban area and pioneering a new path of economic progress south of Broad Ripple.

BR Steak House Still Vacant Bill Ficca and business partners (owner of the North Side Social and numerous other restaurants in BR) was going to re-open the shuttered building (on Westfield at Winthrop next to La Chinita Poblana across from Monon Coffee) as a pan Asian restaurant (with a bar upstairs). The opening was scheduled for October 2014. Well according to Ficca “as of now, things are still on hold”. Hair Salon Closes after 37 Years in the Ripple Jonathan Skinner (owner of Skinners Hair Salon at 6233 Carrollton next to Hubbard and Cravens) is closing after 37 years in Broad Ripple (at various locations). He had been at this location for 10 years. The shop will become a yoga studio. He is moving to Sola Salon in Castleton while his son Mac and fellow stylist Samantha (who also styles hair at the shop) are moving to Salon Lofts at Keystone at the Crossing. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 1 in the right section of the middle row of the easy puzzle that contains the 2-4-8. The 1 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 8. Early recordings of Wes Montgomery - Release party at The Jazz Kitchen The Jazz Kitchen, 5377 College Ave [OO23], hosted a CD/LP release party for the newly discovered live and studio recordings from the legendary jazz guitarist from Indianapolis, Wes Montgomery. Many local restaurants were at the fair, including Broad Ripple Brewpub Leisurely Brewed Beer, BRICS, La Chinita Poblana, Hubbard & Cravens, Hot Box Pizza, and Shalimar (pictured above).

There was some rain this year, but it didn’t wash out the festivities. Thousands came to Broad Ripple to enjoy the over 200 artists and the food and music. Many took advantage of the free shuttle service from Glendale or the bike parking provided by Pedal & Park.

In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. In consideration of the grants made by this ordinance, said Indianapolis Northern Traction Company, its successors and assigns, shall, in case it acquire the lines herein before referred to of the Broad Ripple Traction Company, or in the event that the Broad Ripple Traction Company cease to furnish its present passenger service and commutation tickets to residents of Broad Ripple to some central point in the City of Indianapolis as follows, to wit: -Each day of the year at least one car shall leave some central point on Shelby Street [now Broad Ripple Avenue] in said town for Indianapolis between 6:00 and 6:15 o’clock in the morning, and be followed by at least two cars, leaving such point between 6:15 and 9:00 o’clock in the morning, and at least one car shall leave some central point in the City of Indianapolis for the Town of Broad Ripple at 4:00 o’clock in the after noon of each day, and be followed by at least two cars between that hour and 7:00 o’clock in the evening. The two cars following such morning and afternoon cars shall be scheduled by the grantee, its successors and assigns, as it may determine to before the joint convenience of the patrons of the line and of the grantee, its successors and assigns, in the operation of said line. During the months of May, June, July, August and September, an hourly service each way between such points on Shelby Street in said town of Broad Ripple and the City of Indianapolis from 6:00 in the morning to 8:00 o’clock at nights, shall be maintained, such service to be inclusive of the three or more cars each way, above provided for. The grantee, its successors and assigns, will sell to residents of the Town of Broad Ripple and persons residing along Grantees lines between the south corporate limits of the Town of Broad Ripple and the north corporate line of the City of Indianapolis, commutation tickets, at the prices and upon the conditions following to witSuch tickets shall be sold only first, second, third, fourth and fifth days of each month, and shall be sold in books or packets of twenty tickets, at the price of one and one half dollars ($1.50) for such twenty tickets, and shall be sold only at some one point in in said town of Broad Ripple, unless said Grantee, its successors and assigns, otherwise determine. Ten of such tickets shall be good for ten continuous rides from any point on the lines of Grantee, south of the north corporate line of Broad Ripple to which Grantee’s city service cars shall run to some central point in the City of Indianapolis, and ten of such tickets shall be good for ten continuous rides from some central point in the City of Indianapolis to any point on the lines of the Grantee, its successors and assigns south of the north corporate line of Broad Ripple to which Grantee’s city service cars shall run. Such tickets shall be non-transferrable, but there of; shall be good until used and shall be good only on the city service cars of the grantee, its successors and assigns, operating between said town and said City of Indianapolis, but shall not be good upon the interurban cars of the grantee, its successors and assigns, passing through said town. Said tickets shall not entitle the purchaser to transfer within the City of Indianapolis. The commutation rate hereby fixed shall be in lieu of all license, franchise, or special taxes of said town. SECTION 3. If said Indianapolis Northern Traction company, its successors and assigns, shall acquire the lines of the Broad Ripple Traction Company, as herein before provided, it may maintain and operate the same upon the same part of the street upon which the Broad Ripple Traction Company now maintains and operates the same, and may extend any unconnected double track or tracks on the same line on which the unconnected part or parts are now constructed, so as to make a continuous double track, or said grantee, its successors and assigns, may reconstruct and maintain the same as the part of the streets provided for by the original ordinance to which this is supplemental. SECTION 4. The grantee, its successors and assigns, shall, on signal, stop its local interurban cars passing through said town to take on or let off passengers, at or near the intersection of the grantee’s main line with North Street and at or near the intersection of Light Avenue and Shelby Street, and at or near a point on Light Avenue one thousand feet south of the intersection of Light Avenue and Shelby Street. This provision shall not apply to the “Limited” or through cars of the grantee, its successors and assigns.

Risque Business If you are already a fan of the hand-made, wholesome breads created by Alice and Jeanette at “Perk Up/Brotgarten”, then I probably don’t have to remind you that they are VEGAN too. And many of their food items are vegetarian. (Don’t forget those scrumptious hand-made pastries, pies and cakes. Koffee Klatsch Sundays here we come!) Alice is also a star coffee roaster. I liken Perk Up’s coffee bean mastering to that of a winemaker. Why? Because she roasts each to extract the flavor and aroma of the bean itself. You won’t smell “burned coffee grinds” like you do in most coffee houses. Instead, you will smell and taste the fruity, brightness or rich, smooth nutty elegance of the specific coffee bean you choose for your cup of freshly ground and brewed coffee. Pairing vegan foods and enjoying coffee like wine, made me think about...what else, WINE that works with vegetarian dishes but also exudes an amount of flair. Indiana and Indianapolis have been in the national spotlight at least a handful of times in the past few years. Whether it be the Super Bowl, the NCAA finals or something less flattering such as the RFRA shenanigans. I for one pay a lot of attention to our national “image” as I am super proud to be a Hoosier and love living in Indianapolis. However, we recently had another blow to our ego shown by a recent study of the most (and least) fit list of major cities and in the US. Indianapolis came…drumroll please….LAST! When I read this, I was not only disappointed, I was a bit surprised. In recent years I have witnessed, as I am sure you have as well, the creation of several fitness trails all over town, hundreds of bike lanes on streets, public bike rental sites, many a fitness fair, and dozens of fitness-based studios speckled all over the city. “How can this be?” I thought. The article stated “Leading experts in the field of sports medicine and exercise say personal and environmental factors contribute to the ratings.” The American College of Sports Medicine (which ironically is internationally based in Indianapolis of all places) created this ranking system called the American Fitness Index and it is based not only on how healthy a metro area is right now, but also on the priority of their leaders to promote pathways to active lifestyles and positive health outcomes. Several factors go into the criteria some of which include access to public parks, walk-ability, outdoor exercise options, obesity and diabetes rates. Top 5 fit cities: 1. Washington, DC 2. Minneapolis 3. San Diego 4. San Francisco 5. Sacramento Bottom 5 fit cities 1. Indianapolis 2. Memphis 3. Oklahoma City 4. San Antonio 5. Louisville Obviously Indianapolis has a harder way to go with lack of natural fitness draw such as mountains and oceans. And I personally don’t know any adult that doesn’t own a car and I know of one person that rides his bike to work every day. But call me crazy, who hasn’t witnessed the mob scene on the Monon trail on any nice day of the week, or the weekly farmers market in Broad Ripple and Carmel (yes, Carmel was included in our ranking as well) not to mention many others? We host the nation’s largest half marathon every year, hundreds of 5Ks, bike races, outdoor yoga events, etc. We have Eagle Creek, one of the nation’s largest parks with several events a month, gorgeous Ft. Benjamin Harrison park and so on…..So, what gives? Are these other 49 cities really outshining us? If so, I am impressed, because I feel that Indy does pay attention to fitness and activity. I will say that in regards to diet, Indy does have a ways to go toward access to healthy food as opposed to junk/fast food joints which are appear to be everywhere. Lastly, I do not feel that Indy leaders are doing a bad job with fitness initiatives, but I do think that people need to USE them more. So, I challenge you Indy, get out on the cultural trail for a walk, rent a public bike, go canoeing at Eagle Creek, hit the farmer’s market for fresh, local produce, etc. and take advantage of what our city has to offer. Every year I write a dog deportment column. Yes, it needs to be done every year because I see dogs acting badly in public, which is a HUGE reflection on their owners! Your dog has learned acceptable behavior from you – no shifting the blame for improprieties onto dogs.

www.virtualbroadripple.com So, here are those rules for including dogs in your dinner plans: 1. Call ahead to see if dogs are welcomed on outdoor patios. You don’t want to leave a dog tied to a post or in a hot car if they are not allowed. Or, check out the Broad Ripple Gazette restaurant section. If there is a paw beside the restaurant listing, you can take your dog. Remember only service dogs (not therapy or comfort dogs) are allowed inside restaurants and most businesses. 2. When dining, a dog should be in a “down stay” next to you or under the table. It is not appropriate for a dog to sit in a chair or ease onto the table. 3. Dogs should not bark! Barking is as irritating as children screaming or crying. 4. You should not feed dogs from the table. Even if this is your habit at home, dogs in public should be on their best behavior. 5. Do not let your dog sniff other dogs around the waiting or eating area. If it locks eyes with other dogs, you may set off in an aggressive situation that causes disruption. 6. If you would like to pet a dog. ALWAYS ask permission from its owner first. If the handler says no, do not be offended. 7. If your dog becomes unruly, take it away from the table for a time out. People should not have to put up with an out-of-control dog. It is the owner’s responsibility to have his/her dog under control at all times. 8. Keep your dog on a leash when out in public. You should not leave the dog tethered to a post, returning later. 9. Always pick up the waste your dog has made. You are responsible for any damage your dog causes. 10. If your dog fails at dining out, find a good training center and learn the art of controlling your dog with acceptable public behavior.
