Nicey Treat sells locally handcrafted frozen pops at 916 E. Westfield Boulevard, Suite 120 near the Monon Trail. “Our frozen pops are made from all-natural, organic ingredients in both diary and lactose-free, gluten-free varieties that are naturally sweetened with no preservatives. We have rotating flavors that vary with the different seasons and we pasteurize our own milk. We buy our fruit locally and use our juicer to create our own flavors. Owner Jeff (Patrick) creates all the recipes for our frozen pops. Our most popular flavor is Pink Lemonade,” said Emma. She is a college student working there during the summer. Some of their recent available flavors were Avocado, Banana Cream, Key Lime, Kiwi, Mango Ginger, Pina Colada, Pineapple Basil, Pink Guava and Strawberry Rhubarb. “We try to locally source the ingredients as much as we can. You won’t see any artificial ingredients or artificial colors. We have some fruit-based pops that are kind of comparable to frozen pops and some cream-based ones. I was trained in the kitchen last summer and now work in the front area of the store serving the pops. We’ve been located here about a year,” Lauren mentioned, who is also a summer employee. “Jeff is always experimenting with different flavors and different pops that he makes in the back of the store. He can be seen driving Nicey Treat’s vintage truck or steering their mobile freezer cart to numerous places around Indianapolis, including the Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market and White River State Park. We also cater wedding and corporate events. Another thing that we do is that we are a 1% for the Planet business where we donate one percent of our annual profits to a local organization who strives to keep a clean environment. Last year, the recipient was Keep Indianapolis Beautiful,” Emma added. In addition to their frozen pops, Nicey Treat sells freezer tote bags made from recycled billboards to keep their products cold. Banner Artist of the issue Taylor Smith is the banner artist in this issue. Taylor’s molecular & chemical still life work documents her interest in science, nature, organic chemistry and examining life on a more detailed level. Her work is a calculated, modern interpretation of traditional still life, elements of graphic design and abstract expressionism. Taylor studied at Indiana University and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Berlin. Her art has been exhibited worldwide and her work is held in wide-ranging public and private collections. Taylor lives with her family in the Broad Ripple area and maintains a painting studio downtown at the Stutz Building. She is also a recent recipient of the “Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship” from the Indianapolis Arts Council and the Lilly Endowment. Doris Young received the Hubbard Life-Changing Teacher Award at the May 27 United Way presentation. Ann Mennonno from Center for Inquiry School 27, Donna Pope-Green from Northwest Community High School and Roslyn Stradford from Shortridge High School also were recipients this year. Each teacher received a life-changing $25,000 award. Doris student-taught at BRHS. She has taught there since 1971 and is retiring this year. She has been involved in Brain Game, Humanities Advisory Council, musicals, Ripples, and more. Doris was named BRHS Teacher of the Year three times. She even once chaperoned a school dance with David Letterman! Congratulations Doris!

I spent way too much time looking through old articles and CATHcoffeehouse calendars to try to remember when I saw Dave Ostrowski perform in Indianapolis. I think he played at the coffeehouse at some point and I remember enjoying his Americana singer-songwriter set. I’m looking forward to seeing him again, this time at Logan Street Sanctuary, a venue that I’ve been meaning to visit. The venue is in an old church and has the intimate coffeehouse vibe. Dave is from Buffalo, NY and we are lucky to have an Indiana stop on his summer tour. His last two recordings have spent a good chunk of time on the Folk and Roots Music charts. Listening to his music I’m reminded of his keen eye for observation and his introspective songs. It will be great to see Dave and his beat up – in a good way – guitar again.

It try not to write about events that are more than half an hour’s drive from Broad Ripple – this one is worth breaking the rule for. Béla Fleck (15-time Grammy winner) and Abigail Washburn (one of my musical crushes) will be performing a free concert to kick-off the Muncie Three-Trails Music Series. I checked the mileage and the show is 56.99 miles from my driveway, just a little over an hour away. Béla is considered to be the best banjo player in the world and has been nominated in more Grammy categories (over 40!) than any other artist. – Classical, World, Pop, Country, Folk, Blues, and Jazz, Fleck has revolutionized the photo by Nora Spitznogle genre of banjo music by Abigail Washburn and her banjo. carrying it far beyond traditional Bluegrass. Abigail is also an incredible banjo player and just happens to be married to Béla. I’ve been lucky enough to see Abigail play twice, and have been totally charmed both times. As a duo, they have played New York’s Carnegie Hall and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and they’re coming to Muncie for a free, outdoor concert. Other 2015 Muncie Three Trails Music Series artists are bluegrassers The Steeldrivers, country music legend Junior Brown, and Blues Hall of Fame inductee Joe Louis Walker. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Announcing the Return of the Broad Ripple Duck Race
The Broad Ripple Village Association proudly announces the second annual Broad Ripple Canal Duck Race will take place on Sunday, June 28 at 4:30. This year’s race will take place during the Kids Takeover Broad Ripple Block Party, located at the Rainbow Bridge over the Canal at Guilford Avenue from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Over 1,000 rubber ducks will enter the water where the Monon trail crosses the Canal. The finish line is the Rainbow Bridge and there will be plenty of prime viewing spots along the race route. Ducks may be purchased online for only $5.00 at broadrippleduckrace.com or at the event prior to the race. After the race contestants may pick up their rubber duck as a souvenir. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place. The first prize is a duck gift basket which consists of gift cards from Broad Ripple merchants valued at over $200. All proceeds from the Broad Ripple Canal Duck Race support the programs and projects of the Broad Ripple Village Association, a 501c3 non-profit organization focused on enriching the community, attracting investment, amplifying public spaces, and improving the quality of life in Broad Ripple. Now entering its second year hosting a Farmers Market, the JCC is bringing fresh, locally sourced foods, consumables and complementary items for sale to its convenient north side location at 6701 Hoover Road. Going Local: Vintage Indiana wines & S’Mores Milk Shakes The 15th Vintage Indiana Wine and Food Festival took place June 6th downtown at Military Park. It was a spectacular day weather-wise to spend 6 hours in the park sampling wine from 30 of the state’s 80 wineries, listening to music (Living Proof and Jennie DeVoe groupies were in heaven) and eating food from a variety of food trucks. Not to mention the dozens of vendors and crafts folks with “wine related” wares. For the 15th year, I hosted the Wine-Food Demo stage where guests could sit, watch and then sample, as Michelle Plummer from the Dairy Council and Karen Lackey from the Turkey Association joined me, creating dishes featuring those respected food groups. I started the afternoon with a “Wine Tasting 101” event that introduced the crowd to the aroma wheel, a handy tool created 40 years ago by Dr. Ann Noble of UC Davis. The wheel helps one describe the aromas and flavors of wines in a very simple, effective way. We tasted 5 Indiana wines and with each, consulted the aroma wheel to describe what we were seeing, smelling, swirling and sipping. Butler Apple Wine–Semi dry and true to the fruit; clean, fresh with just a touch of lip smacking sweetness on the finish. Winzerwald Cherry Wine–rich, sweet, lush in color, aroma and flavor. The crowd favorite. Black Hawk Winery Traminette–“Indiana’s grape” can be done in numerous styles, from sweet to dry. This one is in-between. Soft notes of citrus and honey. Huber Winery Vignoles–Another white wine that is done from sweet to dry. This one is semi dry which leads to smooth clean tropical fruit aromas and flavors. Easley Chambourcin–Big red wine with aromas of oak, smoke and black pepper. Dry finish with notes of black cherry. Michelle prepared several crowd pleasing dishes with the turkey sausage/crimini mushroom casserole topped with muenster cheese being the most popular. It was even tastier paired with the Winzerwald Cherry wine. Karen’s turkey recipes were all a hit especially the turkey pasta salad that was dazzling with the Huber Vignoles. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

150 volunteers spruce up BR Park Over 150 volunteers worked to spruce up Broad Ripple Park on June 3. Organized by DTZ Realty, they planted new flowers by the pool, painted an old Amusement Park ride, painted the picnic tables, mulched around the trees, and helped improve the volleyball courts. Recycling in the Ripple Did you know? Broad Ripple Park has recycling bins for cardboard, paper, and cans. The bins are located in the back of the park by the tennis courts (Evanston Street entrance). It’s a Material World A new exhibit opens at the Art Center on June 12, Material World. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. they will have a reception including food and drinks where you can meet the artist. Material World is interesting. From a video artist using found YouTube clips to sculptures made from repurposed dryer lint, this exhibit presents a fresh look into how artists push the boundaries of materials in today’s world. Also at the Art Center this summer: Aristotle Georgiades and Gail Simpson are exhibiting. They produce work using found or salvaged materials. Georgiades and Simpson address the subjective quality of memory and our attachment to objects and materials from the past. Cathy Kravitz explores a variety of mediums in her recent work including painting, collage, printmaking and ceramics. Teresa Lind activates ArtsPark’s East Sculpture Pads with her mixed media outdoor works that touch upon the ideas of labor and gender. There were about 25 in attendance for the May public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee meeting at the Indianapolis Art Center, 820 E. 67th Street [A4 on map]. There were four items on the agenda: A. 724 Broad Ripple Avenue, Huntington Bank, Brad Schneider, Consulting Design Construction regarding a renovation of building interior and exterior. This item was for information only, as no variances are required. Huntington plans to update the look of the bank at 724 Broad Ripple Avenue. The covered sidewalk front will be enclosed. The ATM will be moved inside to the 24-hour lobby space and a drive-thru ATM will be added. Work is expected to be completed this summer. B. Canal Esplanade project update presented by Greg Jacoby, Barth Hendrickson, Drew Braley all with Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf and David Borden with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. This item was for information only. A presentation was made showing all aspects of the esplanade that will run from College to Guilford on the north side of the canal. Funding is $2M from DPW and $250K each from Citizens Energy and Browning Investments. C. 6349 N College Ave, 702, 705, 709, and 713 E 63rd Place and 710 E Laverock Rd. Variance of development standards of the Commercial Zoning Ordinance to provide for mixed-use development, including a maximum 35,000-square foot grocery store and 152 dwelling units, with 340 parking spaces (minimum 461 parking spaces required). 2015-DV3-022. Hearing Tuesday, June 16 at 1:00 p.m. This variance is needed now that the final apartment unit and parking spot counts are available. The committee voted to support. A Bad Egg Can Ruin a Dozen Confession: Sometimes I have a hard time coming up with a topic for my column. I think I have been writing for The Gazette for over seven years, so it’s easy to see why this is possible. This is when I turn to the trusty Internet for research studies on fitness/wellness related topics. I came across an article entitled How the Fitness Industry Turns People off Exercise, so naturally my curiosity was sparked, and hence our topic comes to life! The study out of Australia found that one in three people avoid exercise because they are embarrassed to be seen working out, and another third are scared of being hurt while at the gym. It cited an example from a female client of a clinical psychologist, Louise Adams: A personal trainer screamed at her “you look horrible!” It is no surprise that she ditched the gym and took weeks to recover from this abuse. The psychologist went on to explain that this is just one of MANY examples of the fact that people generally don’t avoid exercise because they don’t like it; rather it is because they don’t like their bodies and fear they will be judged. In fact, out of 1400 people surveyed, 46% said they have anxiety when they think of going to the gym. Adams explained this: “Part of why people are anxious to exercise is because we are supposed to be sexy and physically perfect when we do it. We see images of women in tiny shorts and crop tops and this makes people feel inadequate. Research shows that the more we are exposed to images of physical perfection, the more depressed and angry we get. This doesn’t motivate; it makes us feel worse and we want to hide.” Andrew Meade, former trainer for the Biggest Loser thinks the exercise industry is often a terrible example for health and wellness. “It perpetuates the stereotype of ego-maniac meatheads who are totally obsessed with their bodies. There needs to be more places for people to workout in a comfortable environment where they won’t feel judged all the time,” he said. The other third of people are afraid of exercise fearing they will get hurt, which is no surprise with our “No pain, no gain” and “Go hard or go home” mentality. And when they see people on the Biggest Loser passing out and vomiting from flipping tires during their first workout, how can they be blamed? Meade said “People should be pushed to a level that is adequate for them, rather than smashing a person so hard that they leave by crawling down the stairs. They’re not going to enjoy it or want to come back if they cannot walk. But there is a belief in the industry that we need to punish people during a workout and it needs to be addressed.” Okay, I’m going to stop quoting other people and speak for myself . Let me first off begin my thoughts by stating I am not “self-promoting” or marketing myself or my facility. I am sharing my personal experience from being in this industry for 13 years and witnessing the fear I see in new clients both in the realm of their body image and getting hurt. I have heard so many people say that they won’t look in the mirror or that they shouldn’t be “allowed” to wear yoga pants because they are too overweight. Larger clients have told me of the disgusted faces they see from certain individuals while on the Monon trying to be active. I have seen the anxiety in the eyes of new clients walking into their first session anticipating that I am going to slaughter them to become more “healthy”. I have heard time after time afterward “That wasn’t so bad…I was really scared.” As a fitness professional and gym owner, I personally couldn’t even IMAGINE saying anything negative about a client’s appearance in an attempt to “better them”. I also couldn’t imagine that pushing a new exerciser to the brink of exhaustion would, A. Be a good thing for them or B. Be a good strategy to retain them as a client. When someone talks negatively about their appearance I immediately squash it with a positive statement about them. And yes, when we have new people we do want them to be slightly sore so that they feel that they are becoming stronger, but never to the level that they cannot function the next day. I have heard people say to me many times, thinking that they should feel like they were hit by a wrecking ball, “I don’t think I was as sore as I should have been.” Sore, but fully functioning is the goal. Yes, I could make you not be able to pick up your coffee cup or drive home but that is not good for your body. This is my personal take on this subject as well as every trainer I have or ever have hired… TURN AROUND AND RUN IF: • If a trainer EVER body shames you or is verbally abusive about your physical appearance. This enrages me! This world is so judgmental as it is, so why would anyone resort to paying for more judging. • If a trainer tells you that you will lose an enormous amount of weight in a short time (especially with the use of multiple supplements to their financial benefit). Losing weight isn’t easy or fast, and the good old fashioned way with diet and exercise is the best way to ensure healthy and realistic results. • If a trainer pulverizes you to make you feel like you need them to be successful. A lot of trainers take this approach for their own “job security” because they make people feel SO out of shape that they sign on the dotted line. Not being able to walk is NOT the picture of health. Building up slowly yet progressively is the key to strength and being injury free. • If a trainer is not certified. This is a very scary point to me….You see in good ol’ Indiana it is not a LAW that one must be certified to be a personal trainer. Yep, Joe Schmo could open up shop tomorrow, beat his clients up, verbally abuse them, instruct them with improper form, etc. and it would be totally legal. Nail techs, massage therapists, beauticians, and dozens of others require licensure. But someone would is physically exerting you does not?! How does this make sense?! Sadly, these examples are not uncommon, but I do not have any of this in my work atmosphere. I sincerely hope other trainers and owners that engage in the above mentioned, would begin to take the high road to start to change the negative perception that some hold toward the fitness industry. It truly should be almost solely based on health and happiness. Exit my soap box. Till next time!

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Happy Days Are Here Again Okay, so we can’t do all the water sports on the canal in Broad Ripple, but we have the Monon Trail and White River to enjoy. Summer in Broad Ripple is the best. This is the time of year when the sun stays bright until late, the days are warm, and we all want to be outside playing or dining. Broad Ripple is the perfect place! It’s easy to get out on the Monon Trail to walk, jog, bike, or roll, but last year was my first year to get out on White River. While I had observed people having good times on the river, my mindset toward it was limited to the WNAP Raft Race. That’s right. As I was growing up, we were taught White River was a polluted body of water, and we should not venture into it or eat fish caught from it. But now, years later, the White River is cleaner than it has been in a 100 years. People are now using this natural water source to explore and enjoy nature by kayak or canoe. I was totally excited by my canoe day last summer. The experience made me want to learn more about this river I had long taken for granted.

White River itself is the primary river corridor winding through the city from the northeast corner of Marion County to the southwest. The White River Canoe Trail is 16 miles in length. Launch access is available at 96th Street, 86th Street, Broad Ripple Park, Cornell Avenue, Holliday Park at Meridian Street, Friedmann Park at Kessler Boulevard, and 30th Street. Wapahani is its Native American name, and it is home to dozens of species of fish, small animals, birds, bees, butterflies, as well as some red fox, coyote, and deer. You might see blue heron, wood ducks, osprey, golden eagles, hawks, and even bald eagles. Check out Rusted Moon Outfitters or White River Canoe Company for craft rental and trip maps for an adventure you won’t forget. Seeing Broad Ripple, portaging the dam, and floating towards the museum will give you a new perspective of our land-locked village. Enjoy the summer!
