Touch a Truck 2015

The 20th annual Touch a Truck was held at Broad Ripple Park on June 19. It was dry for a bit before the rain started. The little ones didn’t seem to mind the rain as long as they got to sound the loud truck horns. Park manager Kathy Fitzgerald said this was the first time in her 19 years that the event saw rain.

Banner Artist of the issue Scott Shoemaker is the banner artist in this issue. Scott has been painting and drawing for over 30 years. He usually paints in acrylics, but also enjoys stippling in pen and ink. He is a wildlife enthusiast and works as the signage specialist for the Indianapolis Zoo. A few years ago a red back squirrel took up residence in Scott and his wife Cindy’s mini barn. The squirrel had already been displaced since the old tree he was living in had to be cut down. On the day of discovery Scott found that every container in his mini barn had been filled with walnuts. Flower pots, fertilizer spreader, lawn mower bag, buckets, walnuts were everywhere! Knowing that winter was coming soon, Scott built a two-story squirrel house complete with front porch behind the barn and moved the walnuts. The squirrel liked his house, but still chews his way back into the barn. indyshoe@aol.com

Bierman ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) Autism Center opened their third Central Indiana location at 1025 E. 54th Street in the South Broad Ripple area on May 4th. They also have Indiana locations in Westfield, Fort Wayne and Avon, in addition to offering services in Boston, Massachusetts. “Our newest location provides families living in mid-town Indy with access to quality ABA, Speech & (OT) occupational therapies,” said Bierman ABA Autism Center’s outreach director, Karla Webster. “In addition to these therapies, we provide the communities we work in with resources for their families, events and seminars about ABA and Autism and several annual family-oriented events!” According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in 2014 research, 1 in 68 children in the United States have been identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The US Surgeon General and the American Academy of Pediatrics have endorsed ABA therapy as the best research-based treatment for children with autism. ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is a neurological disorder which affects an individual’s ability to communicate effectively and interact with others. The Bierman ABA model of care provides intensive, 1:1 therapy to kids with autism through creative, personalized therapy programs. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA/ BCaBA) oversees the programs, in addition to providing ongoing training to the care teams working with the kids. ABA programs are designed to teach language skills, independent living skills, and appropriate play skills by blurring the lines between work and play. Bierman also works closely with families to provide parent training and support, working with children in all settings, such as home, school and in the community, teaching functional skills that will directly benefit the learner. The real power of a carefully designed ABA therapy program is that there aren’t ‘cookie cutter’ solutions - the personalized and intensive approach to therapy is as individualized as the diverse needs of the children and families served. What exactly ‘is’ ABA? Laura Grant, MA, BCBA describes it: “ABA is the application of the science of human behavior. Some components of that are evidence-based. The reason we are able to demonstrate this is because we are constantly collecting data to ensure our therapy is the most effective for our kids.” “Board Certified Behavior Analysts determine program goals for each child based on their individual skills and what we would like them to learn. As they’ve grown, they’ve kept a laser sharp focus on making sure they continue to provide high-quality, effective therapy to those they serve. “In Avon, we have a family that travels from Terre Haute and in Westfield, we have another family that travels from Lafayette,” Ms. Novinger said. “As we’ve evolved and grown, we’ve seen progress made, goals met and children graduate out of our services. We’ve come to realize that these successes are direct results of standing by what we believe in and our deep commitments to families and our staff. The important thing is that, as we’ve grown, we’ve done everything we can to ensure the best possible services are delivered,” Ms. Bierman explained. “Currently there is a mandate in the state of Indiana that requires insurance providers to cover ABA therapy. We also have speech and occupational therapists we work with who can provide those services as well. Our locations specialize in early intervention programs, but we will work with children up until age 13,” Ms. Novinger added. “Indiana was the first state in the nation that passed an insurance mandate to provide coverage for individuals with autism. Since 2001, 36 states have passed similar laws. This mandate means that families have access to specialized services, such as ours,” Ms. Webster mentioned. Getting started is easy for families of children with autism to do. Families can call Bierman ABA and talk with an intake coordinator about the individualized needs of their child. The coordinator will work to make sure insurance coverage is in place and then an Initial Assessment will be scheduled with the family to learn more about them and their child. “Kids come in at different hours and times based on their individual needs. Since our therapies are provided one-on-one, some kids may be here for half the day and be in school for the other half of the day. It really depends on the individual child’s program since they are working on different things. That’s one thing that makes our locations unique from school models. Additionally, we have an open door policy, meaning parents can drop in and observe therapy or have lunch with their child. It’s important to us and the success of our programs that families are involved!” Ms. Novinger remarked. Bierman ABA’s success stories are what truly drives and motivates those working with the organization. Bierman ABA has transitioned several children out of services and into schools, often times making it possible for their diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder to be reevaluated. “One of the first kids I worked with had about five words when he started and was constantly having tantrums because he couldn’t communicate with others, but by the time he left our program, he was speaking in full sentences and asking for a break when he became upset. Summer Stock Stage showcases more than 25 of the most talented students from central Indiana learning from some of the most talented theater folks Indianapolis has to offer. The students have been rehearsing with director Charles Goad, music director Jeanne Bowling, and choreographer Mariel Greenlee, to mount these fully-staged and orchestrated productions. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious musical centering on a fictional spelling bee where quirky adolescents compete for a slot in the National Spelling Bee. The musical has won two Tony awards. This is a rated PG production; some material may not be suitable for young children. Mary Poppins is based on the classic Disney film. Adventure abounds in the Banks household when a mysterious nanny magically appears. Mary Poppins whisks the Banks children into a world of dancing chimney sweeps, shopkeepers, and a variety of colorful characters. This story features stunning sets and costumes, incredible dance numbers and beloved songs like “A Spoonful of Sugar” and the best word you ever heard, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” This is a family-friendly show. Summer Stock Stages co-founders, Emily Ristine Holloway, will direct the musical and co-founder, Jeanne Bowling, is the music director, Cheri Jaffee is the choreographer.

They’ll be playing on the outdoor stage at Indy Hostel (show will move indoors if it’s raining). The bands Coyote Armada and The Hollow Ends round out the lineup. All I can do is giggle when I think about this – what fun plans Girls Rock! and BRVA have in store for the kiddos. There will be a bounce house, games, prizes, face painting, arts and crafts, balloons, and music. You can bet they’ll be fabulous music. And I want to see what the musical petting zoo is all about. All proceeds benefit Girls Rock! Indianapolis, a non-profit organization dedicated to building positive self-esteem in girls and encouraging creative expression through music. Their music education programs provide girls with an opportunity to participate in an environment that fosters leadership, encourages social change, and cultivates a supportive community of female peers and mentors. Broad Ripple Duck Race Sunday, June 28 Rainbow Bridge - 6340 Guilford Ave - all-ages, 3:00 - 5:00 PM The annual duck race will take place at the Rainbow Bridge over the Canal at Guilford Avenue. The duck race starts promptly at 4:30 PM. Purchase a numbered (rubber) duck for $5 and it will be tossed into the Canal, where the Monon Trail crosses the water, with the rest of the ducks to race to the Rainbow Bridge. This will be a fun evening of rockin’ music performed by native Hoosiers. Davey Allen and Johnzo West are both Indianans living in Los Angeles. They will be joined by Lafayette’s James Moon. You might recognize Davey Allen from when he lived and played Broad Ripple (2007 – 2008). He is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. His music is heavily influenced by the gospel, country, and blues music he heard while growing up in Indiana. Johnzo West will be joined by his band, The Wayward Souls and James Moon and the 3rd Floor Invention will round out the bill. If you haven’t been to Fountain Square’s Hi-Fi yet, it is a great venue that brings amazing music to town. The Hi-Fi is pretty small so no matter where you’re standing, you’re close to the band. The Hi-Fi is in the Murphy Building – look for the “You Are Beautiful” sign on the top of the building.

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. Annual Meridian-Kessler festival returns for its 7th year

Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), a parish in the north side of Indianapolis, will host its seventh annual IHM Neighborhood Fall Kick-Off Fest on August 29 from 4-11 p.m. in the IHM parking lot, located at 5692 Central Ave. Open to the public, around 2,000-3,000 attendees are expected. The festival will feature local food and drink vendors such as Fat Dan’s, Mama Carolla’s, Sam’s Gyros, Brugge, Pat Flynn’s, Flying Cupcake, a Beer Garden hosted by Monarch Beverage Company, wine and more. Live music by Chad Mills, the Duggan Brothers and headliner Greta Speaks. For $15, attendees can purchase a kid’s wristband for the Kid Zone with inflatables, a dunk tank, a cake walk, kids’ games and more. Admission is $1 per person for attendees 21 and older, and all proceeds go directly to the parish. Attendees less than 21 years of age get in free. In celebration of the Fall Kick-Off Fest, IHM will host the 6th Annual 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by The National Bank of Indianapolis, at 9 a.m. on the day of the festival. Participants can pre-register online before Friday, August 28, for $15 per person or $50 for families (4-6 members) on IHM’s website. The Return of the Broad Ripple Duck Race

The Broad Ripple Village Association proudly announces the second annual Broad Ripple Canal Duck Race will take place on Sun., June 28 at 4:30. The race is take part of Kids Takeover Broad Ripple, at the Rainbow Bridge over the Canal at Guilford from 3 to 5 pm. Kids Takeover will close the bridge during that time for a block party with various children’s activities. Over 1,000 rubber ducks will enter where the Monon trail crosses the Canal. The finish is the Rainbow Bridge, with prime viewing spots along the race route. Ducks may be purchased online for only $5.00 at broadrippleduckrace.com or at the event prior to the race. After the race contestants may pick up their rubber duck as a souvenir. The grand prize is a duck gift basket which consists of gift cards from Broad Ripple merchants valued at over $200. Beat the Heat What a treat when I opened a new sample bottle the other night. A bottle of Baron Herzog “Jeunesse”. The label says the term is French for “youthful, flavorful, fun”. Spot on description for the wine too. AND part of that fun, is that this juice is made from California Cabernet Sauvignon, which is not usually described with those terms. Most California Cab comes with descriptors like bold, powerful, serious. So what gives? The fermentation. The winemakers at BH cold soaked the grapes then fermented them in stainless steel. The processes together bring out the pure bright, ripe, fresh cherry aromas and flavors of the grape. It also makes the first palate impression lean to “sweet”-not in a cloying way, but more of a perky way. You can drink this at room temp but I prefer it chilled. And it’s even more enjoyable used as a base for a Sangria style sipper. Freeze some cherries, strawberries, pineapple chunks and a few slices of orange and dump the fruit and the wine in a big pitcher. Stir it up, serve it up and let the Summer Sipping Season begin! I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Monon open 24/7 starting July 21 The hours of usage for Indy Parks Greenway Trails in Marion County including the Monon Trail will soon be 24-hour access per a rule change by the authority of the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. The rule will be effective July 21. “Extending trail hours will improve connectivity for those who commute via bicycle to and from work – especially for those who do not work 9-5 hours,” said John Williams, Indianapolis Parks and Recreation Director. “Greenway trails play a critical role in our city’s transit network, and increasing access to the trail system adds yet another transportation option for residents.” (The Monon hours were just changed to 5 a.m. to midnight back in November 2014. Previously, the hours were dawn to dusk.) At a public comment hearing on June 15 held at Holliday Park, Williams said opening the greenways 24/7 would improve the area’s competitiveness. “What type of city do we want to be?” he asked, noting that since we don’t have beaches or mountains we have offer networking on trails like Portland does. Williams dismissed concerns expressed about safety, noting there is currently little crime on the Monon according to IMPD data. Additional lighting on the trails is not planned and would be cumbersome and costly, he continued. (There is also no increase in IMPD patrols planned after the trail hours change.) The director noted that front and rear bicycle lighting is required to ride a bicycle at night. Andre Denman, Principal Parks and Greenways Planner at Indy Parks, said Indianapolis was extending its bike trails regionally. All the trails will connect with each other. Columnist Amos Brown (page A4, June 12, The Recorder) called allowing 24/7 use of the greenways “to be among the most inane, boneheaded, absurd public policy decisions I’ve ever seen in Indianapolis”. He feared that there will be a horrendous crime on a trail which will fuel public demand for more lighting and patrols even though the city does not have the cash.

Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put a 1 in the right section of the bottom row of the EASY puzzle that contains the 4-5-6-8-9. The 1 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces above the 4. The 1 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 8. The only space left is below the 5. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. • Trails are cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. On a blistery hot day, the trails provide shade and feel at least 15 degrees cooler than running in full sun. In the frigid winter, trails provide a shelter from wind and insulation. • Less direct damaging sunlight. I already get too much sun; I have freckles and look more like Punky Brewster than I like to admit.  • No traffic or car fumes. No stopping at traffic lights, no drivers giving you dirty looks since they have to move around you, no car exhaust. Refreshing! • Faster recovery and less impact. Trails provide more cushion than concrete so there is less or no wear and tear to the body. • Getting into nature. Sometimes when I’m on a trail and the sun is providing gorgeous shadows from peeking through the leaves, and a deer trots by, I feel like the only person in the world and grateful. We need more time in the space that nature intended us to be in. • Boredom is unheard of. How could one be bored by running through the trees, jumping over fallen trees and bounding through puddles like they did as a kid? • Less care about speed. I can be a little type A about my pace and distance, so when I run trails I feel a sense of “freedom” from gadgets and am just present in the moment. • It’s a harder workout. This may be a con more than a pro depending on who you ask! You definitely go slower, but most trails have hills and obstacles so despite the slower pace and possibly less miles, you are sure to get a great calorie burn regardless. • More core and balance training. With the turns, lateral steps and hops, you are not only working your legs and heart but also your core muscles and stability. More bang for your buck! • Trail runners are generally a very laid back group. I have done a handful of “organized” trail runs and they are always pretty loosey-goosey and not serious. It’s a nice break from the road grind. So if you are convinced that you want to give this form of exercise a try and wonder “Where do I go in Indy?” Personally my favorite local trail runs are at Eagle Creek Park. They have miles of trails, and also hold many events if you are intimidated about getting around. The trails are well marked and groomed. Other great spots are Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park, Holliday Park, Marott Park, and Town Run Trail (watch out for mountain bikes!). If you want to venture out of Indy, Brown County State Park has a boatload of trails ranging from easy to hard. Last point to make is to PAY ATTENTION if attempting to run trails. I have made a few nasty falls in the past. And be aware of poison ivy, bugs, etc. Not to deter you but I couldn’t have ended this article without proper warning. EASY

Ditch the Road Jack! If you are a regular reader of this column, you probably know that my favorite form of exercise is running. And if you are a client or friend of mine, you probably know that I tend to overdo it, and to a fault at times. Running is a great form of cardiovascular exercise and can be an awesome way to help control weight. But, it is also notorious for causing injury without enough rest or cross training. At the moment I am running about half as much and cross training with swimming, spinning and weight training and I feel a lot more balanced than just pounding away everyday on the road. Speaking of the road, another form of exercise that I have grown to adore in the past few years is trail running. Getting on the trail is a totally different experience than the road, and if you are a runner and walker I urge you to give it a try! Here’s why:

Documents thread through of our lives: birth certificates, marriage licenses, tax forms, contracts, and so forth. Documents are central to our village, city, state and national governance. Words that seal the commitments of “men” are powerful and can ring for a long time. Take our founding document, The Declaration of Independence. This one document set the tone and rules for our united states. As we celebrate July 4, let’s have a history lesson celebrating our beginnings. Did you know?: Independence was declared from Britain on July 2, 1776 by the Continental Congress (13 colonies) in Philadelphia during the American Revolutionary War. The Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776. The number of people living in the U.S. as they became a new nation was 2.5 million. Now we have well over 300 million. The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. Thirteen were under the age of 35 and 7 were older than 60. The youngest signers, Thomas Lynch and Edward Rutledge, were 26 years old, and Benjamin Franklin was 70. There was a committee of five formed to write the Declaration: Jefferson, Franklin, Adams, Livingston, and Sherman. Robert Livingston never signed the Declaration thinking it was too soon to assert independence from England. Thomas Jefferson’s first draft was changed 86 times and shortened. Many of the lines of this document were based on Virginia’s Declaration of Rights by George Mason and Philosopher John Lock’s and his “contract theory of government.” Of the 56 signers, all but 8 were born in the colonies. They had various occupations: 24 lawyers, 11 merchants, 9 farmers and plantation owners. Seven were educated at Harvard. John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress, was the first to sign the document. The other signatures were added on various dates, the last being Matthew Thornton, from New Hampshire, who signed on November 4, 1776. Congress initially kept the names of the men who signed the document secret until January 1777 to protect them from charges of treason, punishable by death. The Declaration has only left the capital twice. The first time was when the British attacked Washington during the War of 1812, and the second time was during World War II from late 1941 until the fall of 1944 when it was stored at Fort Knox. When you have time, read our founding document. It is our history, it is our beginning, it proclaimed our nation to the world. It is the documentation of why we celebrate the 4th of July.
