The second duck race in the canal was held on June 28. Over 1300 rubber ducks were dropped off of the Monon Trail bridge. Well over 1000 spectators lined the bridges and the banks of the canal to watch the ducks travel toward the finish line, just west of the rainbow bridge. An Indianapolis Fire Department team caught the ducks past the finish line for later distribution to the race entrants. There were three prize packages of gift certificates donated by local businesses. The winners were Joe Wiesinger, Brittney Harlan, and Traci Willis.
Thanks go out to the crew at IFD station 32 for resetting the boulder and plaque in the station’s garden to an upright position. The plaque commemorates the listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Banner Artist of the issue Austin Gabriel Pittman is the banner artist in this issue. Pittman is a painter and draftsman living in Broad Ripple. He specializes in portraiture of all kinds and works in a variety of mediums. He earned his Master’s Degree in painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia where he focused on oil painting and drawing. He now produces private works and commission works that reflect his unique artistic sensibilities. Pittman takes part in a variety of international shows and exhibits in Philadelphia at the Newman Gallery. He is currently searching for a gallery home in Indianapolis where he can explore his own imagination in addition to commissioned artwork. The Empowerment Exchange is part of New Paradigm Christian Church’s ministry, located at 6202 N. Carrollton Avenue. Their efforts benefit overseas citizens who may never have heard of the Broad Ripple place of worship. “Very recently we started a small, not-for-profit boutique where we sell items that have been hand-made by seamstresses and artisans from four countries: Columbia, Cambodia, Kenya and Zimbabwe. A network of missionaries supplies us with the merchandise and volunteers run the store. That means that 100% of the proceeds from the sales go back to the people making the items. These folks are being empowered to make a living for themselves and as a result, one village has been supplied with clean drinking water, another group of otherwise abandoned women are able to feed themselves and other women have been rescued from forced prostitution and/or the tragic choice of selling themselves or their children into slavery. I became involved in the Columbian mission through my wife. She was part of that mission when she was with me in Barranquilla in 2007. We will be at the Broad Ripple Village Association in front of their main office during the sidewalk sale on Sunday, August 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On July 23, we will be at the Brookhaven Senior Community in Greenwood.” These are just a few places where unique ethnic clothing and accessories will be available. with the Jubilee Village Project. She goes to Kenya where she works as a missionary with women. I got involved with her, and my church (New Paradigm) has a mission with Columbia that branched off from it. My pastor, Jerry Sizemore, has contacts with people in Columbia and also knows people with Global Impact, who are in Cambodia. I handled all four of these missions and all of the monies go back to these countries that strictly empower women who have no means of support on their own. Any donations that I receive help keep us going. We’re a grass roots organization, not a 501(c)(3). I’m passionate about my work. We’re just starting out and we’re looking for any donations and for any help. If any other churches, schools or organizations would like to get involved, they can call 252-LIFE,” she added. Her move to Indianapolis a few years ago has been life-changing. “When I retired, I moved here from Iowa after working 24 years as a correctional officer and field training sergeant with the Iowa Sheriff’s Department. I have a twin sister, who is a receptionist that lives here in Indianapolis and a younger sister who is nurse here as well. My sister and I found New Paradigm Christian Church six years ago. It’s a wonderful church community. What I love about it is that it’s a missionary church and they really minister to those in need for substance abuse and martial problems. We cater to those people. They always feel like a family to us and they come back to visit. We have a pastor, Danny Wright, who ministers at night on weekends to the downtown community where he walks and talks to the guys on the streets. We don’t just want to enable people, but to get the word out to them and tell them that we’re here. We’re thinking of different ways to reach the bridge kids here in Broad Ripple. We have a Tuesday night prayer group here at the church,” she mentioned. New Paradigm’s church calendar is at: Pastor Sizemore’s calling began early in his life: “My original decision to become a pastor was from my dad. He was a minister and I had been raised around ministry and was inspired by the work that he did. I had a local non-profit organization that was working with Hispanic immigrants where New Paradigm Christian Church supported our organization. I eventually became one of their staff members and one thing led to another in 2006 when I became their pastor.” The fulfilling aspects of his work at New Paradigm are realized on multiple levels. “Right now, one of the most rewarding things is that we have a scholarship program for students in Columbia. Seeing those kids go to school and then going on to live their lives, we have seen tremendous progress. Because of their economic situation, they would be lost resources to the world. Locally, the most rewarding thing is when somebody feels that when life is not worth living, they need the love and acceptance of the people of God and they know when they encounter it through his love. That is very satisfying to me,” he noted. The likelihood is that this fall, the Empowerment Exchange will return to New Paradigm, where bazaars were originally held on Saturday afternoons during the spring. You may have heard that the folks at Sabbatical have lost their lease and that this will be their last weekend – there is a music showcase on Friday night and comedy on Sunday night as well. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate David Quiesser and Kevin Phillips for encouraging new bands and bringing musicians to town that might have to skip Indianapolis for the lack of an appropriately sized venue and a great place for all of us fans to enjoy (not to mention the tasty beverages and delicious food). They say it best, “This will be the last musical show that we will ever be hosting. From The Hideaway On Hillside to Locals Only to Sabbatical, it has been an unbelievable journey and MANY friends were made during said journey. Many romantic relationships met at our locales and many fantastic bands and artists got their starts as well. We have had the privilege of growing (up) with many of you. Although we have lost our asses attempting these ventures, we wouldn’t trade it for the world. You will be missed so please come in and say hi, bye, give thanks, receive thanks and share a tear and a beer. We love the artists of this community.” They will open at 1:00 and the music is scheduled to start at 8:00. Be sure to swing in and let them know how much you appreciate them and enjoy that awesome deck view one more time.

The Pawn Shop Pub is hosting a corn hole fundraiser for the Indy Thunder Beep Baseball team. Proceeds from this fundraiser will help defray team expenses to attend the 2015 Beep Baseball World Series being held in Rochester, NY, July 26 thru August 3, 2015. WHEN: July 11th, from 4 to 9 PM WHERE: 2222 East 54th Street Indy Thunder is a baseball team for the blind and visually impaired. Beep Baseball is an adapted version of softball. The only sighted players are the pitcher, catcher, spotters and officials. Everyone else is blindfolded. The game is played with a beeping baseball and bases. With the help of sighted volunteers, blind athletes dive onto the ground to stop a beeping baseball or run full speed toward the sound of a buzzing base to score a run!! Building Tomorrow Announces 3rd Annual Indy Burger Battle
Building Tomorrow will host the Indy Burger Battle featuring eight Indianapolis restaurants competing for the prize of “Indy Burger Battle Champion” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday August 1, 2015 at the Rathskeller Biergarten, 401 E. Walk with American Village on July 30
American Village invites the community to Walk Into Wellness on July 30th by joining residents committed to improving their health. The event is being held to encourage older adults to walk, one of the simplest ways to improve health. The event starts at 10 a.m. July 30th at the community, located at 2026 E. 54th Street. There are no costs. Just show up and join the walk. According to the American Heart Association, a regular walking program can improve cholesterol, lower blood pressure, increase energy level, boost bone strength and prevent weight gain. It is recommended that adults get 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity (like walking) each week. Short 10-minute activity sessions can be added up over the week to reach this goal. American Village’s Walk Into Wellness is a great way to kick-start your walking regimen. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

July Land Use meeting at Indianapolis Art Center By Alan Hague

There were about 26 in attendance. Committee chair Jim Holland was out sick. Chris McElwee ran the meeting. A. 6406 Cornell Avenue, Mark Demerly regarding a variance of development standards to provide for a two-story 5,000 square foot retail and office building with 8 parking spaces with deficient maneuvering area and with 1 deficiently sized handicapped space (minimum 18 parking spaces required and 13 x 20-foot handicapped space required). Petition #2015-DV1-026 Hearing Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. This parking variance is for Just Pop In. The plans are to raze and rebuild at 6406 Cornell Avenue. Just Pop In would then move from the 6302 Guilford Avenue [G4 on map] location. This new building would have space for the shop and for production. There will also be an area for events. The committee voted to support this variance. B. 6503 Carrollton, Mark Demerly regarding a variance of development standards to provide for a 400-square foot building addition with a 9.71 foot front setback (10 foot setback required) on a site with zero-0n-site parking spaces and 9 parking spaces within the right-of-way of East 65th street (9 off-street parking spaces required, parking and maneuvering not permitted in the right-of-way). Petition #2015-DV1-031 Hearing Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. This petition is for a proposed addition to JW Salon at 65th and Carrollton Avenue [C3 on map]. This would allow for the styling chairs to be moved from upstairs to the first floor. The upstairs would then be used for groups, such as wedding parties. The total number of chairs would be six. The committee requested additional information and decided to vote on this petition electronically before the Aug 4th hearing date. C. 6440 Westfield Boulevard, Kyle Hughes and Jamison Downs with Veritas Realty and Misha Rabinowitch, Legal Council, regarding a rezone of the balance of the property from C-S (commercial special) to C-1 office use for Veritas Realty, currently located at 930 E. 66th Street. Petition applied for. This item is for the old American Legion Kennington Post at 65th and Westfield Boulevard. The previous proposal for a 70,000 square foot office building was withdrawn due to complications with the on-site cell tower equipment. This new project is to leave the building almost as it is today, except for completely new interior and some modifications to the roof and windows. Veritas Realty would move here from the current location at 930 E. 66th Street [B5 on map]. The committee decided to vote electronically on this item when the official rezoning documents are available. The next public meeting of the committee is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28 at 6pm at the Indianapolis Art Center.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put an 8 in the middle section of the top row of the EASY puzzle that contains the 2-3-5. The 8 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 2. The 8 in the center section eliminates the spaces below the 2. The 8 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the space between the 3-4. The only space left is below the 3. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

This ad for The Depot appeared in 1985. The Depot was a women’s clothing shop where Public Greens restaurant is today [D5 on map]. Although it was called The Depot, this was not the actual train depot. The original Monon depot is now BRICS, across the street.

Last August our wonderful dog of twelve years died. She was our inspiration for many things including our pet supply store. We called her our CEO (Canine Executive Officer). She was a pet therapy dog for ten years at Community East hospital on Thursday nights. Perhaps, we thought, it might be time to hire a new CEO. We heard that the Indy Mega Adoption would be happening on June 20th and 21st. This event, hosted by FACE LowCost Animal Clinic is for the non-profit shelters and rescue groups of Central Indiana. Groups that attend this event are either municipal shelters that have to kill animals for space (they are required by law to take every animal surrendered to them) or rescue groups and shelters that do not kill for space but pull animals from the municipal shelters to open room. We were ready to walk the site at the Indiana State Fairgrounds to search through the over 1,000 pets that were brought in from 27 groups. We posted it on Facebook so our friends would support this wonderful cause. That’s when things changed. Our sales rep from Precise Pet Foods saw the post and jumped in. He contacted me and asked if together we could set up out there and give full size dog and cat food bags to the adopted pets. What a wonderful idea, I thought. Those pets are probably eating whatever is donated on a shoestring budget. Getting them started on a good diet is the first step to a better, new life. And so it began…all the logistics of obtaining one ton of food and 50 cases of samples and getting it delivered, first to my store and then to the booth the afternoon before the event. This put us in the thick of it all and behind the scenes to see firsthand just how well-oiled this event is. There were over 350 volunteers, not counting those within each rescue group. It was amazing! At 11:00 AM Saturday morning the doors opened. People had started to arrive as early as 8:30 to get in line. Folks were lined up to get in, wrapped around the corner of the building! Over 10,000 people came on Saturday. Volunteers were in the lobby as groups were counted by a ticker and filed in. The volunteers cheered and applauded as each group of so many was allowed in. It was such a feel-good time. Outside was a woman on a megaphone explaining how it worked saying that the cats were on one side and the dogs on the other. It was crazy wild! There were so many people. It was very hot and very loud. The dogs were barking like crazy! It’s as if they were all calling out “look at me” or “hey, I’m over here”. They knew it was their day. There was not one dog fight or mishap. No snarling or growling. They were all on their best behavior. Some were dressed up with bow ties and bandanas. And then there were the cats. Quiet, calm, dignified. Cats are cats and so above the antics of dogs. Their room was peaceful. Cats are harder to adopt out. They had set up enclosed areas where the cat of choice could meet and interact with potential adoptees. In the afternoon it was cat nap time and many slept through the noisy confusion of the room next door. In both rooms I spotted “bonded pairs”. It was a good feeling knowing that these siblings would not be separated. One was a beagle pair and the other the white cat brothers. I was drawn to the beautiful white cats and kept checking them. Towards the end of Sunday when I walked over to see if they had gone home yet the adoption was in process. I talked to the man and woman. Their two cats had recently died just two weeks apart and they were very sad. These kitties were just the ticket for them. I was happy as I saw them lifted into their carriers to be taken to a new life together. Another vendor told me the dogs are happy, you can see it in their face. The photo above is a perfect example. This is Caitlin and Robert Negron and their new best friend, Quincy. I always say, pets make you smile. We were so busy at our booth we missed out on adopting this time. Another day……there’s so many waiting for us in the shelters. Even though we are living in the city, our wildlife is sometimes a page out of the television show Wild Kingdom. As avid bird feeders, we get our share of songbirds, sparrows, grackles, and starlings. What triggers my amazement are the larger birds flying in our neighborhood. The pileated woodpeckers, hawks, occasional turkey vultures, and owls give me pause to think about the living creatures we have occasion to see. I’ve seen the Great Horned Owl being chased by crows, which scold and pursue this interloper. The other owl that frequents our yard is the Barred Owl. This bird never ceases to make me stop and observe him/ her for as long as their visit. We hear them often in early summer. We have witnessed their flights through our trees in late fall and snowy, late spring. Male and female Barred Owls are very easily distinguished. I think our Barred Owl nest is about a block away in a hollow tree on a busy street. He is not hard to spot since he can be as big as 25 inches long. Ours is a big one, not to be confused with other owls. His wing span can be as wide as 49 inches. So as you can see, when he flies, watching him is truly a thrill. Despite his size, he may only weigh around two pounds. He got his name because of the bars on his feathers. With brown eyes and gray and brown markings, he has no ear tufts (like the Great Horned). He is usually stubby looking and has horizontal bars on his chest and vertical streaks on his belly. Some interesting facts about the Barred Owl: • They have adapted well to suburban neighborhoods that have good tree canopies. • They can take over nests excavated by pileated woodpecker or old nest of hawks, crows, or squirrel. Look up to see if you have a tree that has been topped and is hollow. • Barred Owls predators are the Great Horned Owl and automobile accidents. • Their life cycle is eggs laid in early spring; 2-4 per clutch, hatch in about 4 weeks, and fledge 4-5 weeks later. • They can live 10 years but in captivity more than 20 years. They can be a friend of your yard if you have a small rodent problem. Hunting at night, they will swoop down on mice, shrews, moles, voles, rabbits, squirrels, opossums, and occasional birds. They will also hunt at dawn or dusk. These are the times where we have seen them in our yard. Watching them fly with such a wide wing span is breathtaking. Then they sit for long periods on a branch in our elm or oak tree. I sometimes wonder if they have just had a meal and tease us by wanting us to see they have a full stomach. That leads me to their call. When you hear this owl, it sounds like he is hooting. I have learned that these owls don’t migrate. In one study, a group of 158 birds were banded. It was found that they had moved no farther than six miles away. One final fact: A group of owls is called a parliament. There are more than 200 different owl species.
