Hayes & Taylor Quality Clothing Company By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Sports attire entrepreneurs Alex Janeczek and Brian Kelly recently took time out to describe their companies located at 920 Broad Ripple Avenue. “Hayes & Taylor Quality Clothing Company (www.hayesandtaylor.com) opened in 2011 and is co-owned by Brian Kelly and Joe Schneiders. They wanted to make sports-themed vintage t-shirts that are comfortable and well-fitted. I started by printing t-shirts in 2007, making them for Indy Pride in addition to local restaurants and small companies (www. purdrunk.com). We both got on the same entrepreneurial path a few years ago. Kelly and Schneiders liked the marketing and promotions aspect. I do the printing and design for my company. I also have a few other clothing lines that I print for. We’ve both grown from working out of our garages. Kelly and Schneiders ran out of space and we decided to expand beyond our on-line sales. They have licensing agreements with Butler University, Ball State University, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis Indians,” Janeczek explained. “We started four years ago. We wanted to make some vintage sports t-shirts and some beer glasses. All Hayes and Taylor designs are designed by me. In the future, we may possibly move into posters and signs, but want to make sure they fit in with our style and brand. I went to Lawrence North High School and graduated from Indiana State University with a degree in English,” Kelly mentioned. As Janeczek, Kelly and Schneiders joined the same team, “We found out about each other by working at various events. Brian asked me about making t-shirts for them,” Janeczek recalled. In creating custom t-shirts, “we hire different artists Hayes & Taylor to design because there is a lot Quality Clothing Company of local talent as we give them our criteria to put it on a shirt,” 920 Broad Ripple Ave. [H5 on map] he added. Their companies took the www.hayesandtaylor.com checkered flag on a springtime order as their business grew. “We put 1,000 t-shirts in the Indy 500 gift shop for May. There are a lot of USA-themed items that we’ve been selling for the fourth of July. (There is currently a 25 percent discount on USA-themed clothing while supplies last.) Our biggest seller is a Deer Creek t-shirt. We also offer discounts to Butler University students here. If you have a great or an o.k. design on a t-shirt that is not a good color match, people won’t buy it. It’s all about the color and comfort,” Janeczek noted. A visit to their store is like a walk through a sports exhibit. There is a fully operating basketball scoreboard and a Norman Dale basketball camp t-shirt that references the movie “Hoosiers.” Vintage pennants from the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Indianapolis 500, Indiana Racers, Indiana University, Purdue University and Notre Dame hang from opposing walls, as if waiting to compete. Commemorative t-shirts from the Hoosier Dome, Indiana State Fair, the Indianapolis 500’s 1992 running and Market Square Arena are included in the lineup. A Butler University t-shirt features a pair of sneakers while another sports an image of Hinkle Fieldhouse. A Clark and Addison Street t-shirt pays tribute to Chicago’s Wrigley Field. Deer Creek koozies (cup holders) are a big seller. There is something here for every sports fan. A Maryland native, Janeczek answered a call to the Hoosier state in 1999 via Purdue University, where he majored in construction management. He attended the West Lafayette

school when Drew Brees led the Boilermakers to the 2000 Rose Bowl. He recently made a fast break from his previous job to build his shirt company on a strong foundation. “I quit my job to do this full time this year, creating a guy-centric sports themed t-shirt store at an actual brick and mortar location. We also sell t-shirts, v-necks, tank tops and Henley shirts for women and children. We recently had a customer moving to Portland who purchased some Indiana sports memorabilia to take with him,” he said. A t-shirt size chart ranging from XS (extra small) to XXXL (3x extra-large) is at: www.hayesandtaylor.com/size-chart. A historic location provided the trio a home field advantage. “We were looking for a space with size for my production area and needed an area with foot traffic. We were limited to downtown, Broad Ripple or north of 86th Street. We love Broad Ripple and the foot traffic of people who walk by here on a daily basis. On July 24, we’ll be getting ready to sell some football and basketball items, like IU, Indiana State and Ball State. We are working on a game plan for Purdue,” Janeczek emphasized. Licensing an image or logo to reproduce on t-shirts, posters and pennants can be as diverse as the team themselves. Some teams or universities may charge different rates and have restricted use of producing the item. Some teams may prefer going through an exclusive distributor, but these entrepreneurs are drafting more teams to join them. Their current hours are Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday is their off day. You can e-mail: info@hayesandtaylor.com or stop by to learn more. Brian Kelly, Joe Schneiders and Alex Janeczek offer authentic sports-theme clothes paying tribute to legendary names. You can own and wear a piece of sports history from Hayes & Taylor Quality Clothing on (920) Broad Ripple Avenue’s main straightaway.

Town Below are two poems I wrote on May 9, 2015. They feature the differing tempos of 2 great American sports.

2 on tempo the shot clock does not offend me the fast break does not frighten me – some rituals are built for speed

with Nora Spitznogle It’s Indiana State Fair time, it’s Indiana State Fair time! I can’t believe how excited I get each year – I’m always afraid that my enthusiasm will wane, but not this year at least. The “Year of the Farmer” promises great music and exhibits. I will preview a slice of the goodness in this issue and the next of the Gazette. In the meantime, there are oodles of fun to be had.

All good things must come to an end, or so I hear. Rodeo Ruby Love has being doing great musical things for the past 10 years. And band years are like dog years, each year should be multiplied by seven, at least. They have toured (with the requisite van breakdowns) several times, recorded six albums, contributed to compilation recordings, and played hundreds of shows in the last decade. They are celebrating the end of their era with a farewell show at The Hi-Fi in Fountain Square. The description on their website says it best “Rodeo Ruby Love has tried to become synonymous with Indiana: honest, hardworking, non-assuming and a little bit behind the times. Their songs seek to tell real stories, vulnerably exploring truth in the emotions we experience when life and love collide—the heartaches of friendship, the exhilaration of relationship, and the innocent angst of trying to get to second base.” Mike Adams at His Honest Weight (isn’t that a fun band name?) will open the show.

In-Store Performance with Summer and Michael Kelsey Sunday, August 2 Indy CD & Vinyl 806 Broad Ripple Ave. - all-ages, free, 5 PM

Yowza, Summer is talented! I’ve been listening to her debut album, Save the World, and it is wonderful good old-fashioned rock and roll. The fact that she is only 14 years old adds to the fun. She caught the ear of the guitar virtuoso and multi-talented Michael Kelsey, who produced the record and will perform with her at Indy CD & Vinyl. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this show.

I am an Indiana State Fair geek – I’ve attended every single day of the Fair for years. Here are a few insider tips. Parking: They started charging $5.00 for parking on the Fairgrounds a few years ago. If I’m driving, I find it easiest to park at the Indiana School for the Deaf at 52nd Street and the Monon Trail. The charge is the same, and it is an easy walk across the street. There is also handicapped parking there and you don’t have to

go down and up the steps under the track. I find it easier to exit also, be prepared, everyone has to exit onto 46th Street, but there you get to see all of the trailers and fun stuff of the folks that are working at the Fair. Walking: The Monon Trail leads right to the Fairgrounds. You can hop off at 42nd or 38th Street, or there is a gate right on the Trail that leads into the Midway. Pedal & Park: The secured bicycle parking is right on the trail, north of 38th Street. And you receive a coupon for $1 off of your admission. Be mindful that you need to retrieve your bike by 8:00 PM. Train: I had never taken the Indiana Transportation Museum FairTrain because it seemed a little crazy for me to drive to Fishers to travel back to my neighborhood. Last year my clever brother pointed out that I could make the round trip from the Fairgrounds to Fishers and back. Why didn’t think of that? I’ll be taking my inaugural FairTrain ride this year. The trains arrive and depart the Fairgrounds several times each day across from Gate 6, you can now purchase tickets at the Coliseum Box Office. Prices vary by day and age of the rider, check www.itm.org for more info. Tractor Shuttle: I have an unnatural affection for the Tractor Shuttle. It is a great way to see the Fairgrounds and meet people. I couldn’t confirm this year’s price; it was a dollar per ride last year. You can take a full turn around the Fairgrounds while sitting in the shade (or out the rain). Seniors can purchase a daily unlimited ride wrist band for $3 – and it is free for seniors on both Tuesdays of the Fair. Admission: There are tons of deals to be had. There will be a coupon in the Monday, August 10th Indianapolis Star for free admission on Wednesday, August 12. There are also discounts for bringing Pepsi cans, AAA member’s day, college students, military personnel and families, and much more. Check out indianastatefair.com for more information. Food: On both Tuesdays of the Fair there are $2 Taste of the Fair specials. All concessionaires will offer a $2 special. It’s a great way to sample it all! Balloon Launch and Light Up the Night: Friday, August 7th (Opening Day). The balloons will launch at sunrise (about 6:15 AM) and that evening (9:00 PM) there will be an Illuminated Tractor Parade and Hot Air Balloon Glow, presented by Reynolds Farm Equipment. I’ll have the rundown of concerts and other State Fair events in the next issue. -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Installation Nation Event a Hit The Primary Colours art event, Installation Nation, was held at the Art Center recently. The nonprofit arts organization, Primary Colours, will have an “Art vs. Art” event at the Vogue on September 25 according to Brian Short, President (See picture at right with his son Liam). The “top 32” art works will be on display at the September Broad Ripple Friday night gallery walk. There were many great exhibits including “Behind Closed Doors” art piece by local artist Lance Pruitt which let viewers peek inside the doors. All the work was very interactive and the Asian inspired tacos at the Food Truck were a nice touch too. photo by Bill Malcolm Pool closes August 2 Summer may just be getting started, but not for the BR Pool. Ruins exhibit work underway, bike racks coming Also at Holliday Park, the renovation of the Ruins (exhibit) is well underway. The Friends of Holliday Park raised over $3.2 million for this and the exhibit hall renovation according to Sarah Kunz of Friends. Also coming to the ruins: bike racks. Kunz noted that another good idea would be a bike trail to/from Holliday Park. The Park lacks both. Monon open 24 hours Don’t forget the Monon Trail is now legally open 24 hours a day. Sizzling Summer Sangria: bright, light and white

Where in the "Village"?

Have you seen this bike rack? Where is it? Answer on page 14

As summer sizzles, it’s a great time to explore new white wines. Or reinvent your favorites. Most people are familiar with sangria made with red wine, but have you ever had it with white wine as the base? An affordable, easy to find wine that makes a great white sangria starter is Apothic White. The juice is a crazy blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Riesling which offers up an off dry, juicy, tropical fruit kind of flavor. Pour a bottle in a pitcher, stir in some frozen raspberries, strawberries and maybe even some chunks of watermelon, (remove the seeds first). As the fruit thaws it releases some juice which adds a natural acidic lift to the lush, slightly sweet wine. Serve chilled or over ice and add some slices of lime. Another hot weather white is Torrontes. The grape grows in Argentina and kind of reminds me of a cross between gewurztraminer and sauvignon blanc. You get the white pepper spice and stone fruit (apricot, white peach) of gewurztraminer and just enough ZING but not too much TANG of a Sauvignon Blanc. Torrontes is DRY as well. Alamos makes a reliable and affordable offering. If you can’t give up your Chardonnay on a hot summer day then at least give up the oak. Toad Hollow offers a tasty un-oaked version of the USA’s best selling wine grape. Lovely aromas and flavors of green apple and pear. Clean and fresh and uncluttered on the palate. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Jill and doggyboy Harp live in Warfleigh, where she also consults and teaches in an effort to keep the doggyboy’s treat jar filled with biscuits and her freezer stocked with ice cream. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We will try to put an 1 in the right section of the top row of the EASY puzzle that contains the 6-7-8-9. The 1 in the left section of the top row eliminates the space to the right of the 8. The 1 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 7. The 1 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the space below the 7. The only space remaining the lower right square of the section. You have now learned a technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

HARD

Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple by Laura Minor I like having one of my awesome trainers cover my article from time to time because we have such a varied team in regards to interests and style. In this article trainer Ryan Hadley explores the history and philosophy behind Kettlebell training. Enjoy!

Kettlebells? Long ago, in a land far away (Tsarist Russia), the first kettlebell emerged from the primordial fire and molten metal. Russians used the kettlebell or “girya” as a counterweight for measuring grains. The villagers would compete with each other and perform stunt lifts with the bells. Russian festivals and circuses would always feature girya lifting. Predecessors of the kettlebell date back at least to ancient Greece where Bibon lifted a 143kg stone with a handle overhead with one arm. In America around the early 1900s, the strongmen and women would lift kettlebells in various ways. In 1948, kettlebell lifting became the Soviet Union’s national sport. Competitors go for as many reps as possible with a given weight in a 10 minute set. The other style that developed (besides sport) is “Hard Style”. Hard Style is used mainly to develop strength, power and endurance for other sports such as wrestling, boxing, gymnastics, etc. Hard Style evolved in the 1980s Special Ops of the Soviet Union. In 1998, Pavel Tsatsouline, a former SPETZNA instructor, left for America armed with an elite kettlebell training system. I remember the moment, four years ago, when I pulled his book The Russian Kettlebell Challenge off the library shelf. I bought a Kbell a few days later and have been following his instructions to this day. Kettlebells are now used by elite military units (many taught by Pavel), professional sports teams, and gym patrons of every age, shape and fitness level. They are used to burn fat, increase strength, power, endurance and help the body to move well. Martial artists and other athletes prefer the kettlebell over dumbbells because of the yin/yang tension and relaxation of the ballistic lifts coupled with the prolonged tension of the grind lifts. Bruce Lee said, “There are no wrists in boxing.” Same is true for the kbell, which strengthens the wrists by not allowing the extension that bars and dumbbells demand. Beyond the basics are juggling techniques where the girevic (kettlebell lifter) releases the bell at the top of the swing, spinning the handle in any direction, or tossing it behind the back and catching it in front of the body. Juggling competitions are held mostly in Eastern Europe. They are very entertaining and amazing to watch. Juggling develops precise control, quick powerful grip and total body coordination. The girya can also be thrown in every conceivable way. They will not break if thrown on sand or dirt. The earth will be torn up, though. My old backyard had quite the scar from thousands of impacts! Some techniques like the “windmill” resemble Yoga postures and can improve one’s Yoga practice. Some lifts (probably all) develop Zen-like concentration. The “Turkish Get Up”, for example, takes the body from lying on the floor to standing with the bell overhead and back down. It takes around 1 minute to complete 1 rep. The body requires more stability than strength to use strength and power safely. The Turkish GetUp, walking with a bell or two locked out overhead is a tremendous way to work the stabilizer muscles. Almost any fitness goal can be reached using kettlebells. That is why so many elite trainers use them with million dollar athletes and for the men and women who save our world every day. I encourage everyone interested to try them out by following the instructions of a competent trainer. Know what style you want to practice. Unless you want to

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Pollination: The Work of Many

Random Ripplings

Ceramic Dreams, 2815 E. 62nd Street, held an art fair on July 18 to celebrate 10 years in the community. Many art booths were set up in the parking lot and inside the church building.

Plants surrounding our private and public spaces have to be pollinated to reproduce and thrive. Wind and water are major forces behind pollination. In my backyard, I can participate in the process. You can too. Yes, together we can be biotic pollen vectors. If this sounds like advanced science, it’s really just basic botany. Yes, we are part of the scheme of life. Birds and bees are critical to our landscapes and farmlands. Urban bee keepers are encouraging the bee population in our area. Whether the desire to have honey or just to aid vegetable and flower gardens, more gardeners are adding bee keeping to their backyard activities. You may have heard about the bee population collapse. It is a real concern. Nearly “80% of our world’s food crops require pollination to set seed. An estimated one out of every three bites of food comes to us through the work of animal pollinators,” experts report. Did you know butterflies and moths pollinate but are not as efficient as bees? Beetles are also major pollen miners and spreaders to 88% of those plants that depend on biotic pollen vectors (organisms that carry or move pollen grains from a plant’s anthers to the receptive parts). Birds and animals also participate in this lifegiving process. The hummingbird that visits your feeder also stops at flowers on the way. With each drink, the tiny hummingbird bodies brush against the pollen and take it to another flower. Interestingly, bats also help with pollination. They are the night riders of pollination, beginning their work at dusk and continuing on through the dark. You can also consider dogs, cats, opossums, and raccoons pollinators along with humans. If we all just brush up against flowering plants, we can move the pollen throughout our yard. You don’t have to be an anthecologist (study of pollination) to watch the miracle of pollination. Sit quietly near a garden (Indianapolis Art Center park, the Bill Brink Memorial Garden in Broad Ripple, or your yard) and observe creatures crawling into a flower. Did you see a bee, an ant, a beetle, a butterfly or a hummingbird? What you are witnessing is a life cycle. This sometimes is more awe inspiring than rush of other things happening around us. Yes, you will be watching pollination —a critical process of life. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
