Three Broad Ripple area restaurants were among the nine in competition at the annual Indy Burger Battle, held at the Rathskeller Biergarten downtown. Binkley’s Kitchen & Bar, The Sinking Ship, and The Garden Table presented their special burger creations to hundreds of hungry attendees. The other competitors were Between The Bun, Colts Grille, Teddy’s Burger Joint, Stacked Pickle, Punch Burger, and Weber Grill. The annual event supports Building Tomorrow, which has a goal to construct enough primary schools in East Africa so that every child with a desire to learn may do so in a quality learning environment. buildingtomorrow.org

mario@broadripplegazette.com Gillian Bundles and Michaela McCulley are the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of Broad Ripple Magnet High School’s Class of 2015. Growing up on the city’s east side, Gillian’s family moved a few times. When they lived in Anderson, she was out of school for a while before enrolling in Southview Elementary. She attended 5th grade at IPS 92 and sixth grade at IPS 83 where she first began playing music. “Back in fifth grade, I played the alto saxophone and wanted to pursue it further at BRMHS. When I started there in seventh grade, I began playing in the marching band and pep bands. I later became a member of Humanities Advisory Council that enables younger students to meet upperclassmen after school where they have mentoring sessions that provide academic help. At Christmas time, we took in a family and bought them presents,” she explained. In addition to her interest in the Humanities and English Literature, Ms. Bundles’ curiosity in science inspired her career path. She is a 21st Century Scholar and will study mechanical engineering at IUPUI this fall. “One day in my physics class, we had to make an audio oscillator, which is a small device that makes noise. I took biology in eighth grade, chemistry in ninth grade and physics in 10th grade. I took on-line geometry during my sophomore year the first time it was offered. Some assignments would take 30 to 40 minute to complete, but I prefer being in a classroom,” Ms. Bundles noted. As she took AP physics in her junior and senior year, it helped build on her focus in mechanical engineering. IUPUI provided her summer housing while she conducts vehicle safety research in their School of Engineering and Technology with faculty member Andres Tovar. Her work is part of the Diversity Scholars Research Program. “I get to be on campus. The library is connected, so you can go from one building to another.” When school commences in August, she will move to freshman housing, but has quickly found her home in her chosen academic field. Outreach Inc., located on Indianapolis eastside, is “a faith-based nonprofit organization in Indianapolis, Indiana, that reaches out to homeless young men and women (14-24) with the compassion of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to equip and empower these at-risk young people to achieve stability and life transformation.” Their website, outreachindiana.org, contains more information. “I’ve been in outreach since I was in 10th grade. My mom and I lived with my

I started drawing and painting at a young age, always finding it an easy thing to delve into. The last few years, I have begun experimenting three-dimensionally with wood and metals. For me, the art process has always been very therapeutic in letting me relax and express myself freely. This led me to begin to study Art Therapy, as well, with the intent of pursuing it in a Master’s Program.” “Outside of Herron, I am also deeply passionate about performance art and have been a student of Indianapolis’ Circus School, Cirque Indy, for about a year and a half. grandmother, but her house got taken away. We moved to a home on Boulevard Place next to the cemetery, but we had to move later on. My mom went to Wisconsin and left me with my aunt (her sister),” she recalled. The support network of Gillian’s family and friends helped her overcome homelessness and pursue her academic interests in physics, math and science. Mike Akers, outgoing Principal of Broad Ripple Magnet High School, said “Gillian is an amazing young woman. On her own pretty much since 15 years of age, she overcame what seemed to be insurmountable odds. However, that is just who she is. I have known Gillian for three years. During that time, I have never seen her in any other disposition than happy. She will be wildly successful.” Akers will become principal of Key Learning Academy this fall. Ms. McCulley described her background and career interests. “When I went to school, I was very interested in art and one of my teachers recommended that I go into art to further my career. I love and drawing and painting people and portraits. Those are my absolute favorites. I am definitely very interested in interior design and want to major in it at Ball State University and minor in business. I was born in Anderson, but we moved to Indianapolis when I was three months old. I actually went to two different schools in Warren Township, which were Creston Middle School and then I transferred to John Marshall Middle School. I went to Broad Ripple Magnet High School for eighth grade. When I went there, they started in seven grade, but now they start in sixth grade,” she explained. Her academic endeavors at BRMHS were diverse. “I enjoyed math a lot and I was part of a mock United Nations team that traveled to Tufts University in Boston. We represented a country and debated against students who represented other countries. My junior year, we represented the United States and in my sophomore year, we represented Belarus. The AP courses that I took were Calculus, English Composition, U.S. History, Chemistry and Art. I was also part of the cheerleading team for both football and basketball during my freshman, junior and senior years. Some of my memorable experiences were meeting the teachers and being named prom princess my junior year and prom queen my senior year,” Ms. McCulley noted. Principal Akers said, “Michaela is also very driven. She will be attending Ball State University to study interior design, not surprising given her incredible visual arts skills. I have never seen Michaela without a smile on her face. Like Gillian, she will be extremely successful.” As Gillian Bundles and Michaela McCulley prepare for college in a few weeks, their scholarly achievements exemplify Broad Ripple Magnet High School’s theme of broader richer human service.

I can’t believe it is only the fifth Indy Folk Fest, it has quickly become a beloved part of the summer festival circuit. This year’s festival is featuring all local bands and artists and several community organizations. This year the festival will benefit KidsPeace, a nonprofit agency that provides professional support to children and families in the foster care system. The bands are: Bigfoot Yancey, The Midwest Rhythm Exchange, Sphie, Knollwood Boys, Noble Roots Music, Prowlers & The Prey, Kevin Krauter, and Lisa Walks. There will be a vendor village with gobs of great art and other goodies. Karma Kitchen Food Truck will be on site and Upland Brewing Company beer will be offered. Public invited to White River Yacht Club Festival Aug. 22
The White River Yacht Club, a private club on the White River north of Broad Ripple for more than 75 years, will welcome the public for an open house and festival with live music, arts and crafts vendors, kids’ activities, Huey Helicopter rides, live and silent auctions, door prizes, food booths and cash bars. The Carl Storie Band will perform from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The club traces its roots to 1938, when a small group of boaters created the North White River Club. The club held its first meetings in members’ homes and docked boats at the Old Green City Boathouse near Broad Ripple Park or at docks of members living along the river. In 1947, the club changed its name to the White River Yacht Club and took up residence at the present 12-acre site, known as Smith Island. Members restored the summer home located on the grounds, doing the work themselves and financing the first mortgages. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Broad Ripple Park Fall Classes : Barre to Zumba Belly dancing, ballet barre, Zumba, aeorobics, yoga and more are among the fall classes offered at Broad Ripple Park this fall. No WARM Fest this year Broad Ripple Park reports there won’t be a WARM Fest this Labor Day weekend. The music festival ran the last two years. Endless Summer We’ve all heard the adage, “a good wine improves with time”. This summer I read what I would call, two “timeless” wine books. Both were published nearly a decade ago, yet the content is still as entertaining, informative and satisfying as ever. The House of Mondavi by Julie Flynn Siler takes an up close and personal and VERY well researched, interviewed, and fact checked look at the life and legacy of Robert Mondavi, his brother Peter, their parents, siblings, and great grand children who carry on the family wine name, despite decades of turmoil, hurt and discovery. It is truly a remarkable story of the ups and downs of life and puts ANY reality TV show to shame. If you are a wine country visitor, you will marvel as the author retraces the beginnings of wine tourism in the area. For me, it was even more intriguing as I KNOW many of the people in the story, and had the great pleasure of meeting and dining with Robert and Margrit Mondavi while judging California wine competitions, and interviewing Peter Mondavi Jr. several times for my PBS TV show. I listened to the CD in my car so if your August includes a mobile journey, this story makes a compelling travel companion. Notes on a Life by Eleanor Coppola–Yes, she is Francis Ford’s wife and Sofia’s mother but the elegant, Eleanor is a talented writer and artist as well. This book takes a look back at 30 years of life. Once again the tragedies (death of her son) the triumphs (Sofia’s directing career) and an assortment of sincere, ‘every day “ happenings that take Eleanor and her family all over the world. It was a fascinating, joyful yet deeply touching memoir. You won’t look at life the same after reading, and I mean that in a very good way. August Wine & Food: Happy 10th Birthday New Day! New Day Meadery started in Elwood in 2005. In 2010 they moved to Fountain Square, changed the name to New Day Craft and added hard cider to their “mead wine” (made from honey) line-up. Husband and wife Brett Canaday and Tia Agnew continue to add a 21st century spin to the world’s oldest form of wine. The annual Broad Ripple Sidewalk Sale was held on August 2. Participating stores included Artifacts and Empowerment Exchange (above), Marigold (below), Alley Girls, Bungalow, Clara K And Cartabella, Fur Bee, and Runners Forum.
The Broad Ripple Haverford Little League 9-10 year old All-star softball team spent July 16-July 18th in South Bend competing in the State Championship Little League Tournament. While the season didn’t finish the way they wanted, overall they had a very successful all-star run. They finished their tournament season at a 6-2 mark. They swept their district and sectional tournaments going 6-0 in those games. The team was managed by Geoff Thompson and coached by Tamara Leech, Mike Caskey and Brian Loane. Coach Thompson said, “The best part about this team is that throughout the eight games we played every girl made a contribution. Everybody on the team made a play on defense, got a hit or ran the bases exceptionally well. Everybody made a difference some time and all the girls carried themselves as champions regardless of the score of the game. The coaches, their families and Broad Ripple Haverford Little League are very proud of how these girls played this season.” This marks the second time in three years that Broad Ripple Haverford Little League has made it to the Little League State Tournament in the 9-10 age bracket.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. We are going to learn a NEW METHOD this issue. We will try to put a 4 in the center section of the easy puzzle that contains 2-5-6-8-9. The 4 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 9. That same 4, along with the 4 in the right section of the top row limits the 4 in the right section of the middle row to go in either the upper left or upper right square of the right section of the middle row. Both are in the top row of that section, so we can use that to eliminate the space between the 5-6 in the center section. The only place left is between the 8-2. You have now learned a NEW technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

What happened to Broad Ripple Village? When did it turn into Detroit?
no one survived to repair it. The Hotel Broad Ripple is a shining star - my one glimmer of hope. Oh, I’ve heard about the plans and the upcoming improvements and there are certainly some spots of light here and there. But ugly and run-down have been living here for so long, it’s getting harder to believe. Permanent residents, instead of renters. Condos, instead of apartments. Maybe if there were more people here with a vested interest, the neighborhood would stand a chance. Or maybe just more people will be permanently disappointed. - Elizabeth Flynn
It use to be a real village with shops and charm. Decades ago it could be called quaint and even clean. Now it looks like the aftermath of war. Quaint and charm, not to mention clean have moved to Main Street in Carmel and Mass Ave. downtown. I’m a new resident of Broad Ripple and my disappointment with it grows faster than the weeds through the cracks on Westfield Boulevard. And don’t even get me started on Westfield Boulevard from Broad Ripple Avenue north. It looks like Beirut. The street itself is so damaged it’s barely navigable. The storefronts along there look abandoned. And that crumbling retaining wall looks like it was in an earthquake...20 years ago...and
Response - Along Westfield/Winthrop, starting at BR Ave, the old Broad Ripple Steak house is in process of being redone under new business ownership. Recently the veterinary property was completely rebuilt as an office complex. Roger Pools (both buildings) is in the zoning process stage for razing and building new apartment buildings. The old American Legion Kennington Post is in the zoning process for a new buisness and a new look. At Howald there is construction for a new retail center and expansion of CrossFit. As for the condition of the Westfield roadbed and the crumbling bridge over the canal...that is up to DPW. -Editor

Free Yourself from the Nail Much to my sadness a couple of days ago I learned that one of my sister’s childhood best friends passed away. Sad…yes. Surprised…no because I knew that she had been in hospice for the past year with terminal cancer. She was young, way too young. However, when I read through her obituary a sense of peace came to me and brought a pleasant smile to my face. Her life was full of exciting travel, adventure and envious career paths. This is when I realized while her life was short in years; her years were so full of life. And this got me thinking. If I were to read my own obituary as if I died tomorrow what would I think? Would I feel the same (or close to the same) way? Would I have lived a life that would make people feel at peace? How do you feel if you ask yourself these questions? Long ago my one of my friends was in a life transition so she hired a life coach to help her find direction. She told me that this coach used an analogy that I won’t soon forget. It’s called the “howling dog”. In this story a man named Tom moves into a new house and the neighbor’s dog incessantly howls day in and day out, yet seemingly ignored by the owner. After days of this behavior, Tom finally approaches the owner and asks “Why does he keep howling?” He replied “Oh that’s cause he’s sitting on a nail.” Tom asks “So why doesn’t he just get away from the nail?” And the owner replied “Well Tom, that’s because he doesn’t find it painful enough yet.” I’m sure you get the point. And either you yourself or someone you know is that dog sitting on the nail whether it be a job nail, relationship nail, financial nail, fitness nail, etc. Let’s face it we all have our own “nail” or two; something we are unhappy with in our life yet we continue to “live with it” despite our unhappiness. These nails control us by telling us that we are powerless in getting off of them. By reading this, you likely have conjured up what yours just might be. I want to share one more story with you. I had a client that was miserable at her job, and it really showed. She would show up looking tired, frustrated and felt out of control. After struggling with her career for quite some time she had had enough and went back to school at 38 years old to follow her passion. I spoke with her the other day and she said that she couldn’t be happier with her decision and couldn’t believe that she let herself be unhappy for that long. I was thrilled that she had found happiness and she was glowing. I want to challenge you and myself to acknowledge your nails and think about trying to get off of them, or taking steps to make them less painful. For example, if you eat fast food every day, instead of going to the extreme of eating strictly carrot sticks and kale, attempt to cut back to 2 or 3 days a week of fast food, and go from there. And so on, and so on. Maybe you could even go as far as to actually write a mock obituary about yourself and learn if this is how you want to be remembered. In summary, although I am sure my sister’s friend had her own struggles in her short life but it didn’t seem like regret was one of them. Possibly the biggest “regrets” may have been not having enough time to keep doing what she loved. But at the moment, that is one thing you do have; TIME so use it to fill your years with life and stop sitting around howling. Have a great couple of weeks readers!! Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Exploring the Fairgrounds My early childhood home was just south of the Indiana State Fairgrounds so the State Fair has always been part of my life. Now, every day I pass it going to work and look forward to attending the Fair each year. I wager that most of us think first of all that happens when the Fair is on, but the Fairgrounds can also offer a leisurely architectural tour off-season. The Indiana State Fair is full of history and long-standing traditions. The Fair’s original purpose was to allow Indiana’s farmers to get together to share ideas, view the most current farming techniques, and display their products. So in 1852, Indiana’s first State Fair took place in what is now known as Military Park in downtown Indianapolis. Early state fairs were hosted in Lafayette (1853), Madison (1854), New Albany (1859), Ft. Wayne (1865), and Terre Haute (1867). In 1892 the Fair moved to its current location at East 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway. So let’s take a drive. When entering the grounds from Fall Creek you will pass: • Horse Barns (1892) Barns were built to house trotters and pacer horses from some of the best farms in Indiana. They border the east side of the one-mile dirt track. Horse barns underwent an extensive renovation in the 1990s; each has an historic placard on its door in honor of a famous owner, trainer, or horse. • The Fairgrounds Track (1892) There was enough room on the present site to build a regulation mile-long oval track in 1892. The track, with several reengineering efforts, remains today essentially where it was originally situated. A half-mile track was added inside the bigger oval in 1902. The dirt track is home to the sprint cars, the Hoosier Hundred, Indiana Bands, demolition derby cars, and

entertainment during the Fair. • Communications Building (1947) Glass block was a new building material for this structure, with architect Dan Zimmerman employing it to make this structure look as modern as possible. The hand-carved Indiana limestone medallions (roundels) show different Fair events. • Service Building (1952) I remember the Red Cross being located in this building on the left as you enter. • Swine Barn (1923) The Fair Board envisioned this brick, steel, and tile building with concrete floors as a Hog Palace; its Arts and Craft style was quite grand when built. • Coliseum (1939) This Art Deco focal point on the grounds recently went through a major renovation. • Cattle Barn (1924) (Now the West Pavilion) was designed with the same technology used in making metal bridges of the time. • Home & Family Arts Building (1919) The tall, classical arches of this building recall the classically-styled libraries, courthouses, and town halls of bygone days. • Poultry Building (1927) A pavilion with an English Tudor look. • Exposition Hall (1919) The interior is distinguished by a wide-span metal truss roof. • Better Babies Building (1928) The bungalow originally housed information and exhibits about infant health. Later, the State Board of Health occupied the building with exhibits. In 1966, it was remodeled into an old-fashioned Hook’s drug store. • The Lincoln Theater (1932) An Art Deco-style building designed with some influences of German modernistic architecture. • Agriculture & Horticulture Building (1921) The classical style of this building has a different twist, its tiled roof and stucco walls imitated Italian buildings, or, generically, architecture of the Mediterranean area. • 4-H Dormitories & Exhibit Hall (1939) The design is a simple Art Deco or Art Moderne theme. During World War II, when many Fairgrounds buildings were used by the Army as a supply and marshaling center, these buildings served as barracks. There are more buildings to admire on the grounds including the DNR Building (1950), Sheep Barn (1925 and alterations - 1955), Normandy Barn and Covered Bridge (2008).
